Halloween is a great continuation / reboot of the saga.
While at times it focuses on substories that ultimately lead to nothing important, the film is made with great care and respect for the character of Michael Myers and his universe.

David Gordon Green delivers the best film in this series since John Carpenter's original. With Homages and humor thrown in the mix, Green creates a successful, scary, and entertaining movie that can function on it's own, despite some flaws in the fluidity of it's story telling. Halloween (2018) is directed by David Gordon Green and is co written by Gordon Green and Danny Mcbride. These two have worked together multiple times but mainly through comedic efforts, primarily in Pineapple Express. The speculation surrounding these two made sense, but for the most part, they did a good job with this film. Starting with the direction. The three most important things to get right in a film like this is Michael Meyers, the atmosphere, and Laurie Strode. All three of these things were sent into the right direction. Michael is menacing again in this film. He's brutal, lethal, and kills with no reason, just for pure evil's sake. There isn't any confusing mythology surrounding Meyers either. The film retcons all the other sequels and goes back to the basics of just pure evil. Not to mention, the mask in this film is terrifying. The aesthetic: Green captures those October vibes better than any other sequel has before and the score added in by Carpenter and company elevates this film to a higher plateau. Lorie Strode: Jaime Lee Curtis is back in another Halloween movie, but this time she's not running, she's waiting for the evil to return. Curtis delivers an unhinged and emotional performance, the likes of which we just haven't seen in this franchise. It was big for the filmmakers to treat the Strode character right and they did just that. Moving on to other noteworthy topics of conversation, the kills in this movie are so satisfying, however weird that sounds. Green directs a scene that clearly looks like it was inspired by Carpenter where Michael walk around the streets of Haddonfield, entering random homes and murdering random people. The scene looked to be shot in one take, but focuses on the sheer brutality of Michael's evil. A huge bright spot in this film was the character of Allyison, the granddaughter to Laurie Strode. If this character fell flat, then the film loses such a huge factor. However, they casted the perfect person for the job in Andi Matichek, she knocks it out of the park. For the most part the side characters are serviceable in Halloween (2018), my favorite of which include the two investigative journalists that start our story off. They add a level a pure interest into Michael in this film and do not just seem like cast aways, they serve a purpose to this film. With all the things that make this film great, there's a number of things that hold it back from the original, and that' the screenplay. The writing in this film up until the last act is pretty good, for the exception of some pretty terrible characters (CAMERON, RAY, DR. SARTAIN.) The main issue with this film is Dr. Sartain and the direction the filmmakers decided to go with him. It's hard to grasp how David Gordon Green and Danny mcbride sat down, watched the final cut of the film, and thought the decision they made with this character fit in the film. I will not spoil anything but the writing in this moment was extremely underdeveloped and the idea really wasn't sought out at all from that point forward. There are some questionable performances in this film. Judy Greer seemed uninspired until the last act. Toby Huss, who plays Ray, the husband of Judy Greer is not good in this. His character offers noting but stupid lines of dialogue that are supposed to be humorous but fall flat. This may be nitpicking, but the child actor that plays the boy who discovers the bus crash is the worst part of this movie, he's terrible.

But, with all that being said, this film delivers despite its flaws. Halloween (2018) is a return to form for this franchise and a film that I definitely recommend everyone go see. It's a fun time. (3.5/5) (72/100)

TheHalloween is directed by David Gordon Green and is the direct sequel to the original Halloween film of the same name by John Carpenter. This movie ignores all the sequels and tries to right the wrongs that they have done to the franchise. The plot centers around Laurie Strode (Jamie Lee Curtis), who has become a bit of a hermit-survivalist after being traumatized by the events of Halloween set 40 years prior to this film. She fortified her home and trains herself seemingly every day to prepare for Michael Myers’ inevitable return. However, this has made her estranged from her family as Laurie Strode’s daughter, Karen (Judie Greer) wants little to do with her mother considering how she raised her as a child and how her behavior seems to be overly compulsive and obsessive about Michael Myers. However, Laurie Strode soon learns that she needs to reunite with her daughter and granddaughter because she fears for their safety due to Michael Myer’s escape from the mental institution via a bus crash. Overall, the writing for this movie is decent. The plot is overall well thought out and it is awesome to see Laurie Strode and Michael Myers go face to face on the big screen again. The dialogue, for the most part, is serviceable and has some great character exchanges, but I feel that the humor was a bit overdone in some points. For example, in the film, there are some scenes that are clearly meant to be taken seriously, yet jokes are thrown in kind of randomly. Some of them made me laugh, but others left me a bit puzzled as to why they would put comic relief in certain moments. As for the character writing, the standout characters are of course, Laurie Strode and Michael Myers. The rest of the characters are serviceable, but they’re nothing special. The best parts of the movie, for me, were when Laurie Strode and/or Michael Myers were on screen. Overall, though, the writing is serviceable. Not bad, but nothing special. What the movie really gets right is the entertainment value. When Michael goes on his killing spree, I was enthralled. The kills are done well and very brutally. In fact, I would say that Michael Myers is more intimidating here than he was in the original film. This film makes it extremely clear how much of a strong, brutal and unfeeling man Michael Myers really is. There are a lot more blunt and messy kills in this movie than there are in the original. The kills in the original Halloween were at times a bit silly looking, but in this film, the kills have a serious sense of weight and brutality to them that the original just didn’t have. The musical score is also done well. It kind of sounds like a modernized version of John Carpenter’s score from 1978. After all, he composed this score as well. It adheres to the classic score while adding a slight modernish edge to it and I thought it worked very well. As for the cinematography, it was well done too. The movie does look good and is lit very well and there are plenty of long takes and long shots. There are plenty of people who say this movie doesn’t have an atmosphere, but to be honest, I disagree. I think this movie has plenty of atmosphere and is very creepy at times. Although the film has a rocky first act, it hits its stride in the final two acts and is a non-stop, tense thrill ride from there on out. The final confrontation between Michael Myers and Laurie Strode is awesome, with a kind of a role reversal, as the hunter becomes the hunted. Although I do have complaints with this movie, overall, I really enjoyed Halloween. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. After all of the terrible sequals in this franchise, we've finally got a sequal by people who clearly understand John Carpenter's classic. This movie isnt perfect though, it has alot of writing issues, the whole break up between a girl and a boy sub plot at this Halloween party doesnt really add anything to the story. Most of the highschool charactors you dont really care about them, and all of them die except for Laurie's grand daughter. There's a twist later in the movie where Michael's new psychiatrist turns into a murderer all of the sudden and kills a cop with knife that was in his pen. Michael later kills him by stomping on his head. That twist did'nt add anything either, it was a twist that was unecessary, and then then they just throw it away by having Michael stomp on his head, what was the point? Here are the positives, the soundtrack is obviously really good since its composed by John Carpenter himself, Jamie Lee Curtis is really good in the movie. There are three scenes that I love, there is a scene where Michael is going from house to house killing people and the camera work is amazing, there is another cool scene where Michael is walking towards this highschool kid while the lights turn on and off, there is also a scene where Michael pushes Laurie off a balcony and he looks off the balcony where she lands and she's gone, its a nice callback to the ending of the original. Overall I definetly rcommend seeing this movie, even with its flaws. Expand

It is well directed, it is well written, it has great acting and the pacing is slow like the original. The “life trauma and its impacts” theme is incredibly well crafted. The development of Laurie Strode’s character and her relationship with her daughter and granddaughter is fantastic.

As a movie, it is above most of the slashers out there. As a Halloween flick, well, this is the part that the movie has its victories and also fails in several ways. This installment delivers strong fan service to die hard fans. From its opening credits that pretty much use the same formula of the original to the scenes that pay homage to the whole franchise, the movie knows how to gain the hearts of the real fans. John Carpenter’s soundtrack and scores are the best in this. This is probably his best work yet.

But the biggest lesson Carpenter has taught us, which is “don’t show too much and keep in the shadows”, well this was truly abandoned in H2018. I felt like I was watching Michael kill people, one after the other, without any supporting tension. Any suspense. The addition of comedy also destroyed a lot of the good opportunities that the movie had to scare the **** out of us. With the exception of the 3rd act that is amazingly well written and has a scene that really made me fear Michael, the rest of the movie does not scare much. Overall you will realize that you are watching a good fun movie, that is not very scary and works better for die hard fans or for people who are easy to scare.

Even if David Gordon Green's replica isn't as eerie as original, the new HALLOWEEN gives us context why these two legendary horror icons deserve another Jack-o-Lantern to be lit, filled with gore, effective cliches and role reversal.

The newest Halloween is one of the best in the series, and with no surprise. This is a true slasher, with even some extra things on top. The kills in this are gruesome, accompanied by some very brutal imagery. One in particular including a police officers head being turned into a literal jack-o-lantern. Yeah...Rob Zombies got some non-cringy competition (lmao). The kills in this were very creative and are satisfying. Most are quite realistic and shown on screen, and most of the ones that aren't have a beautifully gory aftermath. Along with that, this feels like a horror slasher. The way its lit and shot show that they cared about explaining a visual story and communicating to the audience, rather than having a TV-sitcom-type lit movie with static normal shots. Alot of the shots have movement and certain angles or depth to them to fit the mood of the scene, along with the lighting. I also foud myself enjoying the struggle Laurie has in keeping a grounded relationship with her family. We can see both sides and it allows for empathy and understanding of the characters. However, there is one flaw among all the characters. Most of them are very stupid. Alot of the decisions made had me screaming in my head at the characters and some of the decisions even straight up took me out of the movie, wondering if anyone logical would really actually make these decisions based on 4-year-old logic and intuition. This little kid literally sees Michael, runs to the babysitter, and is somehow convinced that he's not there???? And he's not freaking out??? What the **** Or someone seeing Michael and jumping on a fence, panicking, just screaming for help, and not running around the house or something. Dumbass... There are also some unnecessary characters, such as a sheriff who could've served for a badass fight between him and Michael, but its as if, like, they forgot about him? Until the end and then they just shot some extra things and added a line of dialogue for him in the script? I don't know, but he was useless. And Michaels ethics weren't consistent at times. He kills a kid and then lets others go. Ok... Along with that, there were some stock sound effects and eh music (including a guitar cover of the Halloween theme) which ruined the simple but very disturbing footsteps and breathing of Michael. Other than that, this is probably one of the best horror movies I've seen in a while, along with Hereditary. Its effective at being disturbing, its shot very well, has awesome kills, and just understands what its supposed to be doing. Besides its stupid characters, at times unnecessary music and some other things, I'd say a solid 7/10. Go see this if you haven't! Expand

Halloween (2018) is a fresh take on the long running Halloween franchise. It is a lot more laid back than the rob zombie remakes and the later Halloween movies. That might make it sound boring, but it keeps it interesting for long term and new fans. With it being a lot less crazy, the story can pace itself a lot better and the writing can be more than "just another slasher movie." However, at first it takes some time to get going but it is well worth the wait. The story is paced masterfully well and unlike most slasher movies, gives proper context of why Michael is killing. And unlike the other Halloween movies, other than the first movie, this is the most realistic that Michael Myers has ever been. (Besides some hiccups, Michael kicking a police car in half comes to mind.) Realism is a crucial part of a horror movie, because the more realistic the situation is and how it unfolds the more the audience can relate to it. For example, Michael just walking through the streets and going into random house's gives the audience the feeling of to lock their doors when they get home. The more absurd it gets, the more the audience feels disconnected. Like I said before, Halloween does a very good job of this excluding a few parts that are absurd.

However, the movie is lacking in a certain aspect that is crucial for a slasher movie. The violence is very mellow and hardly worth mentioning, this movie could've been easily PG-13. Not to sound like some crazy person myself, audiences go to the movies to watch slasher movies, to watch the fights and violence, but Halloween lacks that. Most of the killing is done out of shot, which is very anticlimactic for a villain who is notorious for his violent nature. There are some highlights though the fight between Laurie and Michael is the best fight in the movie and is very well paid off. However, the personality and motivation for Laurie Strode is kind of laughable. Like there was no reason for her to set up these traps, cameras etc. in her house other than paranoia that Michael MIGHT escape, and she wants to be prepared. Literally the only reason she acts this way is because it is a movie and no other reason. Every person in the world would move on if the person that attacked them was put in prison. The other characters serve the story very well. The actor who played the daughter did a very well job of bringing it across of what it would be like to have a psychopath as a mother. And the actor that played the granddaughter did a fantastic job of showing she loves her grandmother, regardless of what people say about her. Not every character is a win though, the husband dies very quick and anticlimactically. He is also used for comic relief but most of the jokes fall flat and won't even get a chuckle for people who are over 18. However, the journalists do a very well-done job, of actually you not Michael not wanting to kill them. That was a weird sentence. Overall, Halloween does a very good job of revamping a franchise that hasn't had a good movie since Halloween 2. The story is very interesting and worth investing in. Some people may be disappointed with the lack of violence, which is somehow lacking for a rated R movie. Most of the characters serve the story to great lengths, while a few are very lame and unfunny. Overall, it is a very enjoyable experience and is worth a watch if you're a fan of slashers.

This time we go all the way back to the beginning, something that is becoming an increasing phenomenon in the moviegoing marketplace. People don't want remakes (the original is too special), but they also don't want sequels (cheap money grabs). But how about both in one? While parts of it are quite good, other parts are downright lazy and woebegone.

Although it purports to be a direct sequel to the first film (inexplicably disregarding the 2nd film to get rid of the brother/sister storyline), it homages, and in some cases takes scenes and plot point from nearly every other Halloween film. It's like a mashup, but set to the tune of reboot. Laurie's PTSD storyline is taken from H2O, but cranked up to 11. The first time Michael picks up a knife again in the kitchen with the old lady is taken from 2. The doctor character does his best Loomis. The bathroom kill scene with the podcasters is from both 4 and the Zombie remake. The final shot is from 4.

We are asked to take Laurie as as serious character study -- she has PTSD and is estranged from the family she ostensibly loves -- but instead of her learning anything about herself she is ultimately proven right and let off the hook for her years of misplaced paranoia, since in this film Michael was somehow captured right after the first film ended and has been locked up ever since.

Why disregard the 2nd film, which could have given her plausible reason to still fear Michael? They never found his burnt body and he could still be out there. H2O knew to do this, but here we get a half-assed Michael locked up storyline for the third time, and yet again he escapes while changing facilities.

This film also includes strands of desperate thematic relevance. Michael supposedly represents the patriarchy. While a slasher movie might be a good fit for that kind of exploration, was Halloween really the right platform? If the plan was really to return Michael to his mysterious randomly killing ways, how can he represent the patriarchy? (In another strange twist he doesn't kill a baby when given the chance. I don't want him to kill a baby but why even address that?). It's all just very weird and out of place in the overall context of this film.

There are good moments however. Michael's mask is back to its grand evil beauty. It's haunted, aged, worn and sad. Like how this whole movie should have been. Jamie is fantastic, and the climax actually raises some goosebumps, if ultimately underwhelming. The score is appropriately electronic, with a good balance of referencing the original and sprucing it up.

Green has a few nifty long tracking shots in this, but they feel like homage pastiche. Both ostentatious and not enough. Atmosphere is mostly lacking, the whole film is edited so fast and no shot lingers for too long. It doesn't have a creeping singular vision, instead its stuck in the past with a few face slaps of modern relevance to make it feel fresh and new.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Michael Myers is back and this times he's senile?
It was a good movie but not as good as some critics claim. And definitely not a masterpiece. There was some plot holes and a lot of loose threads in the story and characters that seems important but then just disappeared. Anybody who hoped it would have reinvented the genre will most likely be disappointed because it really is the same predictable thing we have seen over and over again since the 70's. You soon realize how the whole movie will go.
While the movie has a lot of trivia from the first movie it sometimes doesn't even feel like the people who made it had seen the original. Because for a movie that was all about getting Halloween back to its roots and be like the original it really got a lot of things wrong, something I think has to do with the fact that this movie was based on their head canon of what was happening in the original.
First of all, Michael Myers seems to have forgotten how to be Michael Myers. He no longer stalks his victims before striking, he just goes from house to house killing people like it's a chore, going through the motion. It almost becomes silly and never scary or that interesting to see him just walk around killing people. Luckily they skip most of those killings.
Michael Myers suddenly has super strength. Sure, he was always stronger than a normal person but not like this. I'm talking Jason strong. I saw a question on Quora on how he became super strong and now I get why someone asked that question.
And Laurie Strode apparently has also become super strong because she's stronger than Michael during their battle. And she's not that clever when searching for him, opening doors with her gun so he could have grabbed it.
Michael Myers and Laurie Strode are no longer related and there's no point to it. There is nothing in the movie that makes it impossible for them to be siblings. In fact you wouldn't even have known it if a character hadn't said that someone just made that up to find a reason (that someone was John Carpenter and Debra hill btw). A lot of people are upset by this and that they skipped Halloween 2 (again, for no reason).
You might remember that the people who made this movie said they took away the sibling thing because they felt it made it less scary if Michael Myers had a goal of hunting down Laurie Strode and her family, and some speculated that maybe Laurie would be hunting him instead.
The thing is, in this movie he's STILL hunting for Laurie Strode and her family, and it is still his goal to kill her. In fact the movie goes so far as to say it's his final goal. That they are two opposites that is connected and drawn to each other that can't die until the other one is dead (yes, they even hinted that Laurie Strode too had some kind of power to survive death). This despite them saying they wanted to take away the supernatural feeling of the series and Make Michael Myers just a killer that could be killed.

While I would recommend viewers should ignore the hype and temper their expectations, there is still a lot of tense, gory fun to be had throughout this installment.

Let me start by saying that I was glad to hear that the creators wanted to go back to the roots of the franchise and ignore all of the sequels that watered down the affects of the original that resonated so deeply with audiences at the time of its release. That being said, I came away from this film feeling as if the creators didn't have a crystal clear vision of where they were going with this movie.

At times it feels like they captured the essence of the original rather well... and then at other times they directly contradicted John Carpenter's vision and "cinema of the mind" approach to the horrible tale of Michael Meyers. One has to also question what the hell they were thinking when they shoehorned in possibly one of the stupidest and least necessary twists I have ever seen in a movie in the third act that is so dumbfounding that it has to be seen to be believed. The film also feels as if it veers into becoming one of the many Halloween rip-offs with the addition of pointlessly under-developed characters used solely for hokey exposition or padding an over the top body count for a Halloween film.

Overall, I think audiences will enjoy this installment for its tense atmosphere, cheap thrills and balls-to-the-wall portrayals of Michael Meyers and Laurie Strode.

Pros:
The mother/daughter/granddaughter dynamic adds some emotional weight to the story.
Jamie Lee Curtis is stellar and her performance is multidimensional and nuanced.
Michael is more frighteningly intimidating and imposing than he has ever been.

Cons:
Terrible, terrible twist that nearly "broke" the whole movie,
Pointless and underdeveloped side characters added in to pad the body-count.
Under exploring relationship dynamics that showed promise, but fizzle out.
Elaborate scares that try to subvert the viewer's expectations, but only do so because of continuity errors and gaping plot holes.

I really enjoyed watching Halloween 2018 with my friend, and as a fan of the genre, and in particular the 1978 original, this brought some of the best fan service i've seen in this current wave (more like onslaught!) of franchise remakes so kudos to the team for making this happen and not compromising on their vision. That said however, fundamentally as a horror movie it fails to conjure the scares despite showing far more blood and gruesome brutal death than the original ever did (in fact there is very little on screen blood in the 1978 original). The resultant film then in my eyes is a failure and got a bit too carried away with its overly complex story. Halloween 2018 would've greatly benefited from a simpler story and decent tension building editing which is not what was delivered.

The story feels convoluted with too much setup for the protagonists and I really wish the doctor had been cut entirely. The many early scenes of exposition with the investigative team also cut away rather than create tension. Overall Halloween should/could have focused on being a better horror movie first with decent fan service second! Despite these failings I was very entertained and is hard not be charmed by such respectful levels of fan service to the original.

The much anticipated sequel to John Carpenter's Halloween, set 40 years later. If like me you never bothered with any of the sequels then good because Halloween 2018 made the wise decision to ignore all of them.

Laurie Strode (Jamie Lee Curtis) lives a life away from the rest of the world, she has an estranged relationship with her daughter and granddaughter. Still haunted by the events that took place Halloween night 40 years ago. Michael Myers is in a high security mental asylum but is due to be transferred on Halloween night, the 40 year anniversary of his original killing spree. Things play out about as well as you expect and this slasher horror movie starts delivering exactly what it promises. A well made horror that isn't afraid to take some dark turns and keeps the atmosphere for the most part. This is largely due to the soundtrack, one of the best examples of using a score effectively in a horror movie. Instantly recognisable and enough to send chills down your spine. This sequel is definitely made for the fans, it's been building up to the Laurie v Michael Myers final confrontation I was just a little disappointed the story kept drifting back to the high school teenagers and their mundane problems. When we meet Laurie Strode in this movie she's unrecognisable to her character in the original Halloween. She's not going to be terrorized, she's the badass 'ain't talking no **** grandma who's spent her life preparing for meeting Michael Myers again determined to finish him off and that is all I cared about. No it's not perfect and it doesn't quite live up to the original Halloween but it's entertaining and definitely one to check out. Your perfect choice for the time of year. Recommended.

"The Shape" was as menacing as ever. That being said, this is a flawed film. The flaws are two-fold, but inter-related. First, with the exception of Laurie, and, perhaps, a character with limited screen time--the supporting characters are neither compelling or memorable. Part of the problem is that it almost appears that this movie had a television series narrative as opposed to a feature film. There are too many characters and subplots to sustain any interest in either of the aforementioned. Eventually, you just want some of them to get killed off--to return the focus to Laurie and Michael. My second issue is that, as are many films in 2018, the male characters are, by and large, ineffectual boneheads--leaving Laurie as the only competent person in the film. I have no problem with JLC playing the hero--but rooting for male "good guys" to get killed so as to get them off the screen (because they are so annoying) is not optimal screenwriting. I think some of the review "
inflation" is due to the fact that to some extent, the film is "woke"--especially in a #metoo respect. In my estimation, the movie would have been a solid "8" if the male characters were written with a modicum of realism and empathy.

isn't that sinister as the original one..

Halloween

Green's take on Carpenter's scariest night, is plausible but is certainly not palpable to the tone and nor is equally scary as it should have been. And the primary reason to that is the uncertainty that was kept alive in the original installment, that is clearly the missing puzzle in here. Although, Green does get few gigs right. And by right, I mean, bang on bucks. There are few jaw dropping revelations that can leave you shook and make you think twice before moving ahead. But that's as much as thinking you are about to get in here. It takes steps that are more harrowing then the previous one even ever dared to do so. And yet it still isn't that sinister as the original one. Probably, because of the innocence and the rawness that is left untouched in this one.

The narration is gripping and adaptive but isn't layered or thought provoking as it was anticipated. And as far as answers are concerned you are still left under the shades, all the ones that were essential, were given in the '78 version of Carpenter's. The editing and the conversations, at times makes it a bit spooky and sketchy and not on terms of the genre but on terms of the practicality that it attempts to achieve. The silent pitches that used to create the glass cutting tense environment on the screen, is a big void waiting to be filled. The horrors and screams seems manipulative and most of the time is spent upon creating obvious close calls that aren't going as expected. Green is a good filmmaker and there are clear signs of that.

But it takes a much more evil mind to create the perfect horror, and that is something that can neither be learnt or taught, it comes natural and unfortunately Green doesn't have it in him. Curtis is back on the suit except this time it is armored with guns blazing on both the shoulder. She is hurt and evolved with starry eyes that can kill anyone. She oozes power to a point where it creates catastrophe on others lives too, and mind you, this character that may look bad and rough on the outer surface and is actually soft on the inner side, doesn't actually go as one might think. Greer is convincing but the rest of the supporting cast doesn't get anything beyond your stereotypical pawns of a horror genre.

The sound effects are sharp and also at times a but loud, but since Green uses it as a tool in a narration especially when he has to transition from one scene to another, it works for the most part of it. The upgraded background score on the original version by Carpenter himself, is astonishing and breathtaking that creates a dreadful impact among the viewers. Halloween is a decent feature as both an individual and a sequel, but its existence is somewhat questionable and to listen to Green for around two hours for him to convince you for its reasons that are justified, seems a bit of a stretch.

Hands down better than most if not all sequels and an overall decent but disappointing movie.
Unlike most of the sequels, it is very faithful to the tone and dark atmosphere of the original; this Michael Myers is once again an unstoppable force of evil rather than a regular human psychopath or part of some cult. Jamie Lee Curtis is once again the shining star whose performance single-handedly brings the movie together.
A bit too much fan service, not enough new Ideas, an overabundance of loud jumpscares, a poor second half, and misplaced humor prevent the movie from being capital G "Great".

That said, this "Halloween" kinda blew goats. The biggest problem is that the script didn't seem to have much drive from scene to scene at times. There were no great dialogue moments. Laurie's character felt flat and kind've under defined. Add to that the misguided undercurrent of not feminism as much as misandry was a turn off as well. They do make it a point to show that even when you are best friends and have an emotional connection with a girl, if you are a fat or less than hot male and you try to kiss her, it's an offense worthy of a gruesome death. Love the sensitivity of the #metoo crowd. Good to know. "H2O" was a far better written and more entertaining film. As I left the theater (which was dead silent for the entire film) I couldn't help but compare my overall lack of enthusiasm for what I just sat through and the elation and total satisfaction I felt after viewing "H2O." This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. What disappoints in this movie is when the trailers depicted this ultimate Laurie vs Michael movie, and that got me very excited, because it was going to be something different.

The problem is, it turns into this generic heavily cliched horror movie so quickly. All the characters, except for Laurie and her daughter are just there to be killed by Michael, and that's it. All those clumsy scenes where someone is running away and slips, or gets the piece of clothes stuck on a fence really annoy me because i thought this movie would be better than that.

Whenever Laurie was on screen though, it was almost perfect, her performance was great, and her story with her daughter was a definite high point in the movie, i just wish we could have gotten way more of that.

The plot twist where the doctor is also a psycho would have been amazing, but it goes nowhere. Although that shot where he wears the mask, to emphasize how psychotic he was, was a great shot. That twist could have been better handled.

Another moment i thought was great, was when they trapped Michael set the house on fire, where they show his eyes and he's just looking at them. That shot gave me goosebumps. But in the end they wasted a good opportunity for a great and different horror movie

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Halloween 2018 really disappointed me. I was looking forward to it and it was my most anticipated horror film of the year. In the end it became boring and uninteresting. The story had no substance. It didn't feel like it had anywhere to go, but to have random empty characters killed off. The characters don't really do anything, but run around, hide and try to be smart. Laurie Strode (Jamie Lee Curtis) was the only character worth investing into, because she had a lot to bring to the story, but we don't even get enough of her. You can tell Jamie Lee Curtis was enjoying her time making this film too and it shows in her performance and the film was hurting not having her in it a whole lot. Laurie's family was worthless. They don't do anything worth caring about. The dad dies and I didn't even care, because he didn't serve any purpose. The side story with the granddaughter was poorly brought to the audience and boring. The mother is annoying and didn't really convince me that her life growing up with her mother was really as bad as she make it out to be. The atmosphere was confusing. I definitely could see that John Carpenteresque tone and look to it. It really felt like they really wanted to bring back the old feel of what made the original into a style of horror. The score was awesome. It was nice hearing the old synth sounds and theme song from John and Cody Carpenter. There was a really cool single shot scene in the movie though and it really brought a unique feel and tone to the film and it really brought Halloween back to life. It really felt like the film was elevating, but shortly it was undercutted with stupid comedic lines or a jumpscare noise. Oh my god, everytime Michael Myers shows up to kill someone theres a stupid jumpscare noise, and it really ruins the atmosphere that the film is trying to convey through out Michael's character and the film itself. Please, stop the jumpscares noises, it doesn't work at all. I honestly wouldn't see this again until it comes out on Blu Ray or something. It's boring and I would watch the original sequel over this one. But go watch it and tell me what you think about it. This is only my opinion. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Halloween! In 2018?! I was excited. Was being the operative word. I saw the movie at my earliest convenience and what I saw left a lot to be desired. The opening credits got me right in the zone - the rotted pumpkin clearly representing the poor Rob Zombie attempts and some of the other stinkers in the Halloween series. But that was all to be forgotten, the pumpkin was reborn and re-lit and the audience sat there with me, ready to digest whatever was in store for us. What was in store, was a poorly put together mish-mash of poor acting and poor script. Now granted, Jibrail Nantambu is a young actor but his role of Julian was so poor I thought I was watching an out-take. His delivery of lines was comically out of sync with what the script-writer had intended that it sounded like something that wouldn't have made the cut in a B-movie, yet, here it was. The premise of Michael being in a mental institution for the past 40 years seemed like a strange premise, but it was just about pulled off, although the way we got to the mental institution was lame - the journalists clearly were there for cannon-fodder. And this was the problem throughout - the cast just seemed to be there to kill. There wasn't anyone I really cared about. If you cast your mind back to earlier Halloween movies, you'll remember Bernard Garrett (Halloween II). Although his screen time was relatively short, I liked Bernard. Halloween has the stereotypical love-triangle thing going on which really felt like we haven't progressed in horror movies - or rather, we have (Saw didn't feel the need to add teenage love triangles into the mix). There are glimpses of hope - Michael Myres is as violent as ever and he's on a mission to kill. The music, threat and potential is there, but just as we head towards a good scene, the pacing moves from being too fast, to super slow...really, slow. There are a couple of twists and turns but one of them I wont spoil was in my opinion, an offense to fans of Loomis. One other thing that sticks in my mind (like the smell of a rotten egg) was that when Michael killed a cop, the police response was weaker than the response you'd get for posting a controversial tweet. The ending, which I wont spoil, was rather dull and a ultimately somewhat of a let-down considering the amount of advertising i'd seen for this movie. I wanted to love this movie - I even went as far as watching several of the other Halloween movies before this one, but I suspect the rating will drop as more people view this. Unfortunately, the pumpkin is still rotten and i'm not sure if this is a series than can be revived. Expand

In this movie he was just a random crazy person, who once free from prison just walk around slashing people. The kills had absolutely no scare aspect to them. They also ruined Laurie Strode in this movie by making her a complete loon after only the events of the first movie. I can see if she went crazy if it followed after H20, but since none of them never happened, then get over it. H20 did her significantly better. She was still paranoid but still a normal person. Also the three generations of strode woman was pretty cheesy.
But back to the major hole in the movie. Michael Myers. No scare aspect to him. It was just him roaming the street killing randomly to make it a gore fest. The writers really need to rewatch the older movies to learn the build up to the kill is one of the most dramatic. They could have done much better. However, due to how well the movie actually did, I worry the next two they plan will follow the same mistakes.

But I can’t blame anyone for being bored since this sequel certainly lacked the flawless pace and cleverness of the original classic. Also, a lot of the acting in the sequel was pretty lame. The bus crash in the beginning was well done, but then the pace sagged until it picked up again in the last half hour. The next version should be about Michael taking revenge on the director and screenwriter of this version. Expand

Expand

I found Halloween to be a huge disappointment. From the first set of scenes, it was pretty clear that this wasn't quite the sequel that I was hoping for. In a lot of ways it pays homage to the original, which is fine except for the fact that in doing so it comes off as a cheesy 80s slasher. Some people dig that, and I think that's why a lot of people who have seen this film have enjoyed it. I, however, was hoping for a more modern and somewhat serious take on the story. Instead, Halloween is a film with little-to-no character development, a hollow plot, a severe lack of on-screen kills, a mediocre script, and the production value feels like that of a Lifetime TV movie. It was a disappointment on almost all fronts for me, and doesn't give me any hope for any future Halloween films. Expand

This film as a direct sequel attempts to veer past the culture and iconic nature that made Halloween special in the first place. Calling this film fan-service is an understatement because you can almost say it’s too similar to a fan-made film. The problem with the structure of the script is that it is far too simple and obvious for viewers to decrypt. This basically tells the audience, “you’re too stupid to understand our movie so we made is basic for you.” I’m not fond of that style of filmmaking as I am the type of creator that believes in my audience peicing together the plot as it goes. With this film, they made the plot simple and left too many holes open and then altered their main attraction to a stiff board trotting around town as if no time has passed. The film has many issues to point out but you can make up your own interpretation of what is good vs bad. In my opinion, this film is not much better than Ressurection and we all know how terrible that film was. So as it stands, I still follow the h20 timeline, Halloween 1978, 81, and H20. I don’t even recognize ressurection apart of that timeline. But to each their own. This film very much underwhelmed for me. Expand

Furthermore, the pacing, acting and script were all contrived and unconvincing. If it wasnt for the blood and Jamie Lee Curtis' constant shouting and blathering about the "boogeyman", this would have been more accurately described as a family drama.

The only reason why I gave this 3 stars is because of the title track composed in 1978.

Though conventionally well made and competently delivering for its audience it's also exactly the predictable retread of gore and bore anyone of sound mind would expect and avoid including old fans of the classic original, the one that started the whole slasher thriller sub-genre and a clever deservingly praised little movie at that. It feels much longer than it actually is with the only viewers who could possibly be entertained being the young who have not seen this schlock all before and maybe the mentally retarded.
The makers and marketers are so vapid and lazy they couldn't (or stupidly chose not to) even come up with a variant on the original title which is nonsensical since it's not a remake and will only lead to pointless confusion in the future with the duplicate titles.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I get the feeling some may not have actually watched Halloween 1978 via all the reviews on various sites. They seem to say this new Halloween is the "sequel" to the 1978 original and that Michael has been incarcerated ever since. Problem: Michael got away in the original Halloween. It would work if they called this movie Halloween 3, but the body count referred to would have to be higher than "5 people". It would be feasible considering Michael "burned to death" in Halloween 2 they could have captured him then since both movies occurred on the same night. Some critics have said there was closure by the end. I say, It was left wide open and there was absolutely no closure. There were way too many valleys/painfully slow moments. It could have been so much better than it was. Die hard Michael Myers fan here, but I couldn't disregard enough of this movie to keep it interesting for me. Way too much just didn't make sense or attempt to stay in line with how the story really went. You just have to imagine that there were no Halloween movies after the original 1978. Also, Michael would not have gotten away in the original's ending. I had such high hopes for this film, but personally, I walked away disappointed. Expand

Ghostbusters with Guns

Not worth the $12 admission! The only thing good about this film is John Carpenter's original score. This is not a horror movie; it's a chick flick with a guest appearance by Michael Myers. The characters are a sitcom level of complexity at best, with the standard women smart - men dumb shtick. The lead women have all these kick ass combat skills, whereas the men couldn’t find their own asses with map. The plot meanders aimlessly, like Michael Myers, from scene to scene. Characters, dull and shallow, appear and disappear without rhyme, reason or entertainment. In the end, Halloween is a disjointed humourless, horrorless sleepwalk through Haddonfield, Illinois.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Halloween. I have seen many of the 11 movies that exist. Eleven. I'll say that I don't get this film. I DO get that Hollywood is set up to make money and this IMHO was a clear attempt to cash on the name and nothing else. I have seen MANY MANY horror movies and feel like especially when you have a historical franchise like this there are SOME rules to keep consistent. I am not stating that this is some Rian Johnsonization of the Halloween name but it still lacks what the originals did seem to address better. This will contain spoilers about plot (box has been checked). I think anyone can look around and or read other reviews and get the general plot. I knew the gist before I even saw this. But I'll get right into the plot holes I had issue with. Any horror movie has dumb actions but I feel like Cabin in the Woods (except that ending tho) set a bar for what the Horror genre should ask itself. 1) Why did we need the reporters or that opening scene. Verbal exposition for a movie is genrally lazy (Cinemasins anyone) 2) So Jamie Lee Curtis (great actress and resume) [JLC] has a house in the woods somewhere with fairly advanced security (cameras, lighting, motion sensors, hidden basement with supplies) and dealing with PTSD (handled better in Halloween II) why would she entertain reports that clearly did not address her (call, text, email AnYTHING) why they would be coming? 3) Enter JLC's Daughter and granddaughter. Clearly the Mom (Judy Greer) is somewhat accomplished and the daughter (Andi Matichak) smart. Can we explore their rift more movie?
4) Micheal Myers is clearly well known and he is just in some medium level institution about to get transferred because ya know small towns don't ever remember all the issues and murders or surviving family (like the movie lazily attempted to show the stress and burden going on with JLC) members may have
5) the Killing starts and the "tension" mounts but after 4 (that's four) people get murdered in the same place there is NO (like NONE) warnings, Amber alerts, tweets, local carrier pigeons in said town that 40 years ago had a killing spree on Halloween that NO ONE seems to remember or act like they care. Happy Halloween everyone!!! Yay!!!

I could go on but I think the general gist of this film is the BS that is Hollywood and it's still clearly working. For the folks that gave this movie 10s I don't know what you watched but perhaps you work for Universal Pics and were volun-told to spread the word or your a family member of David Allan Green IDK. This is the trash that is the trend in these remake type films that gets on my nerves enough to voice my opinion. It only gets a 3 because I felt like JLC performance kept the movie afloat (still suffered from bad pacing but...) Andy Matichak did a good job as well in the least to further the narrative but the ending then felt like they tossed her aside as to forcibly pit Micheal v. JLC. Judy Greer was ok but didn't seem to push our sensibilities into believe that she had a REAL divide and change in parental direction that I think the movie wanted us to feel. And about that. Remember there have been 11 movies. ELEVEN. IDK if we need to get into the Infinity Gauntlet like powers of H2O or even 4(Revenge; Paul Rudd is prolly still shaking his damn head) but this film seemed to make M&M strong but not invicible (didn't he get shot by the house?). Soooooooooooooooo you have a we'll say 55 y/o F that is supposed to contend with an older Micheal (that old man strength can be deceiving believe you and me) that has been holed up in a house making rennovations at the most that is getting tossed around and still surviving? OH and YOU DIDN'T EVEN TRY TO SHOOT HIM absolutely dead despite being obsessed and reeling and preparing for the ONE nemesis that you spent 40 YEARS trying to prepare for the one instance/circumstance that he did escape and try to find you. Would she not want to riddle him with ALL of the guns and ammo she had at her disposal (mostly close range mind you despite being clearly disadvantaged even if not hurt but do you see why I had an issue with this film) I mean like WASTE him as if you're playing GTA5 and you had to rage quit because the instance before some noob cheaply killed you. And then have her daughter shoot him as well while filming the instructional vid to hand down to her granddaughter and expect it to be passed down for generations?

That's HISHE

Having loved and worshipped the original Halloween then rewatching it 40 years later with an avid following of fans at the cinema I realised the many faults the film has. The excellent concept, filming and music are let down by goofy moments and outdated pacing. It's still iconic but flawed. The new Halloween is nothing but flawed. I feel like I'm watching a really dated film that is trying to be ironic but comes across sarcastic and tiresome. The scares are lacking, the characters unconvincing, the development dull and so on. I could not be more disappointed. Halloween: H20 (1998) was better, at least it got the Halloween vibe and was entertaining. The only decent recent remake was It (2017), that was phenomenal and I didn't get my phone out once watching that. The music and filming are the only positives of the new Halloween. Maybe it'll go full circle and I might enjoy it in 40 years. Expand

The sequels from the 80s, 90s, the Rob Zombie remake/sequels got worse with each new installment.
Then they had a "brilliant" idea: a sequel that ignores all sequels which also is the beginning of a trilogy! Hollywood doesn't even try to hide the fact anymore that it is creatively bankrupt.
Halloween 2018 brings back JLC as Laurie Strode but does nothing different from Halloween II - 8, Halloween 2007 & Halloween 2 (2009). If you've seen any of those, you've seen Halloween 2018.
Bury it already. Let Michael rest. Forever.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Whoever gave this good reviews must've caught the original 1978 movie instead. Think about it; they're both named exactly the same thing. That's the only explanation I got as the 2018 'reboot' or whatever label they slapped on it is a turkey. 0 scores always feel a tad reactionary but I usually sit and think of one positive then another and even crap movies can tick a few boxes. The 1 is for the music. There is nothing else positive. They completely stripped away the air of invincibility Michael Myers carried whilst finding absolutely zero motivation for his insatiable killing sprees - something even the inferior sequels managed to come up with. The cast isn't stellar but both female leads are capable of so much more than what was on display here. The one interesting character, Hawkins, is brushed aside much too easily to even merit more than this mention and honestly, the audience is supposed to feel connected to the characters in these movies especially - not wish them dead. Halloween 2 (1981) is one of the best slasher movies ever made and perfectly complimented the original. Resurrection aside the others were serviceable and did not deserve to be retconned for a mediocre hypejob like this. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Not quite a horror movie, not a romance, not an action movie. What the hell was it? In some ways it was a deconstruction of the original. Michael Myers is reduced to a sad old coot and Laurie Strode is the most tragic character of all characters in the original. The movie has her stuck in a nightmare for the past 40 years. She survived in 1978 but lost herself and her life. In an age when SJW creators like Rian Johnson create perfect Mary Sue's, it should come as a relief that Halloween 2018 depicts Laurie with some flaws. Unfortunately, she gets the same mistreatment Rian Johnson gave Luke Skywalker and is a character paralyzed by trauma. In both instances the trauma is just a gimmick that is not even explored. Just something to beef up roles and attempts to make unremarkable movies seem more profound than they really are. The movie has less tension that H20 did but at least the mask is a little better. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. And here I thought movie critics were a bunch of frauds, but nope... 7.1 user score LMAO! 7.1 for another steretypical horror movie that throws logic out of the window and has people act retarded in order to be slaughtered in a fancy way. A kid just came running downstairs telling you that there's a weirdo that broke into his room? Better check it out alone. You see a car with 2 dead people in front of your house, what's the first thing you're gonna do? Stare at them for 30 straight seconds with an open mouth of course. Killer and cop in the same house, the killer walks slowly in front of the cop, then keeps the same slow tempo while walking down the stairs and out of the house, where he takes a turn on the garden. The cop did nothing during that time period other than missing a shot(lol) and just following him down, then suddenly looses sight of him. Lastly, there's a scene where this guy literally walks among children holding a knife and on a neighborhood where every door is unlocked. Seriously though, the murder scenes were so predictable and cliche I was actually surprised at the end that there's no deer jumping in front of someones car in the middle of nowhere.

So what's left? Well, the "plot".. There's this killer guy named Michael that slaughtered a bunch of people some time ago, with only 1 of them surviving. During his time in prison, there are characters wondering why isn't Michael talking, and what is it that drives him to kill people.. What's his connection to the last victim that survived? Why does he want to kill her so badly? Will he talk if they meet? Well nobody the **** knows because nothing happens in the end! The guy gets trapped in a cell and then they set the house on fire. Boom that's it folks.. Also, that scene where he kills a woman but leaves the baby be even though he sits on top of it for a moment made no sense. I suppose it was "inappropriate".. slaughtering people left and right, choking 12 year old kids is fine but the baby? God damn man, too much violence!

I don't care if this is a sequel or a reboot of some previous movie, because that's what I'm seeing in the comments. As a standalone, it's trash. If you watch this and think it's good or even decent, please assassinate yourselves immediately.

There are a bunch of people with guns in this movie and they can't figure out how to take out a single guy with a knife, what a **** cliché. Brief, this movie is an unoriginal boring piece of sh**, screw anyone who likes this movie. Expand

The Movie was terrible. Why were there so many plot holes and terribly written dumb ass characters taking up all the run time? All we wanted to see was a conclusion between Michael and Laurie... All we wanted to see was a conclusion between Michael and Laurie... Not pointless exposition on a background most people not hiding under a rock for the last 40 years would have already known. Such a bad mis-mesh of unbelievable characters doing the opposite of what any sane person would do. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Reporting from Studio 35, it’s Date Night at the Movies, with Trent Steel. With date Angel Doyle. The new Halloween is a f$&$ing sh$$$how. Let me just save you the time and effort of reading further. I really feel badly that I’m devoting these 3 minutes to even recognize it as a thing that exists. It’s the worst piece of film I’ve seen in years; I couldn’t even laugh. It’s edited in the classic style of a bipolar chimpanzee with scissors and glue, and severe ADHD. What are your thoughts , Angel? “(loud laughter, followed up with a jarring snort, proclaiming to the house with an all inclusive sweep of her arm:)These motherf%%*#^s think this is a great movie!? F$&@ing idiots!” Yes Angel, we are in Clintonville, hipsters like things that suck, for the irony or something. The terrifying thing about the original Michael Myers: his absence from the screen. The Shape is a phantom, he just exudes his menace, not his visage, silently hides in the shadows, stalking, offering a split second glimpse, or was that just my eyes playing tricks? Smelling out and savoring the palpable unease he creates in his prey, until that day comes, then....BAM!!!! There he is !!! Stab Stab Stab kill Stab kill, cock head slowly to watch death settle into a victim’s pupils! Angel, hey! Angel! “Zzzzzzzzzz snort zzzz” The Shape it turns out is now a balding grey haired man with stubble. And he basically wears a camera on his back like a third person video game; It’s Grand Theft Auto without robbing the hos after you beat them to death. This is the point where I drifted off to a far off theater in my mind, and watched “Die Hard.” If I were JC I’d take every copy of that film, bury Danny McBride alive with them, set the mountain alight and throw myself on the pyre. Angel, it’s time to go. “Has the movie started yet? Hey, give me some popcorn, B$&ch!” Until next time, goodnight, and “We’ll see you at the next date night !” Expand

The movie basicly consisted of Meyers standing there trying to be intimidating then stabs/kilss in a very stiff manner then its reset, repeat over and over and over, just laughable how preditable it was and some of the characters let themselves be killed. What was the worst, it was boring... Expand
