After seeing this film, I realized how all the prior sequels missed the mark on everything. Those sequels missed dedication, passion and promise - three things that this film all included. Those sequels missed dedication, passion and promise - three things that this film all included. Halloween (2018) isn't just a well made horror movie, it's a well made movie in every aspect. The cinematography is gorgeous, the lighting is eerie, the acting is phenomenal, the music is chilling...and it is scary!!!

In this film we follow Laurie (Jamie Lee Curtis) who has been suffering from PTSD for 40 years following her escape from Michael Myers back in 1978. This film does an impeccable job of portraying PTSD, and how Laurie's life has been derailed by it. The film follows Michael escaping after a bus crash, and in this film - Laurie is the one hunting him down. It is a unique twist that is well done.

This film is filled to the brim with incredible references to all prior films and is done so cleverly, they work! These allusions don't feel forced or like a gimmick. They are natural and work so well with the film. This film will keep you on the edge of your seat because for the first time in 40 years, we feel how scary and dangerous Michael is. From when we first see him in action., we know he isn't not here to mess around.

Aside from some necessary expositional dialogue, this film makes all its marks. It is a film done so well with such passion and dedication. David Gordon Green, Danny McBride and Jeff Fradley made an impossible to miss movie. Finally, a Halloween sequel that feels like a MOVIE. A true story you are invested in and can follow.

This is a MUST SEE film for all Halloween fans - and all horror fanatics, and anyone who just loves good movies! I viewed this film in a special screening, and the audience there screamed, laughed and cheered their way through it the entire thing. This will go down as one of the best horror films made, and even one of the best slashers too. This film is so well done, it doesn't only outdo all the sequels, it nearly outdoes the original. Halloween was a continuation of the saga and my first incursion of the Michael Myers movie, that was thrilling and also entertaining with a badass Jamie Lee Curtis and with a slightly escence of the previous movies.

It was a good movie but not as good as some critics claim. And definitely not a masterpiece. There was some plot holes and a lot of loose threads in the story and characters that seems important but then just disappeared. Anybody who hoped it would have reinvented the genre will most likely be disappointed because it really is the same predictable thing we have seen over and over again since the 70's. You soon realize how the whole movie will go.
While the movie has a lot of trivia from the first movie it sometimes doesn't even feel like the people who made it had seen the original. Because for a movie that was all about getting Halloween back to its roots and be like the original it really got a lot of things wrong, something I think has to do with the fact that this movie was based on their head canon of what was happening in the original.
First of all, Michael Myers seems to have forgotten how to be Michael Myers. He no longer stalks his victims before striking, he just goes from house to house killing people like it's a chore, going through the motion. It almost becomes silly and never scary or that interesting to see him just walk around killing people. Luckily they skip most of those killings.
Michael Myers suddenly has super strength. Sure, he was always stronger than a normal person but not like this. I'm talking Jason strong. I saw a question on Quora on how he became super strong and now I get why someone asked that question.
And Laurie Strode apparently has also become super strong because she's stronger than Michael during their battle. And she's not that clever when searching for him, opening doors with her gun so he could have grabbed it.
Michael Myers and Laurie Strode are no longer related and there's no point to it. There is nothing in the movie that makes it impossible for them to be siblings. In fact you wouldn't even have known it if a character hadn't said that someone just made that up to find a reason (that someone was John Carpenter and Debra hill btw). A lot of people are upset by this and that they skipped Halloween 2 (again, for no reason).
You might remember that the people who made this movie said they took away the sibling thing because they felt it made it less scary if Michael Myers had a goal of hunting down Laurie Strode and her family, and some speculated that maybe Laurie would be hunting him instead.
The thing is, in this movie he's STILL hunting for Laurie Strode and her family, and it is still his goal to kill her. In fact the movie goes so far as to say it's his final goal. That they are two opposites that is connected and drawn to each other that can't die until the other one is dead (yes, they even hinted that Laurie Strode too had some kind of power to survive death). This despite them saying they wanted to take away the supernatural feeling of the series and Make Michael Myers just a killer that could be killed.… Expand

This is without a doubt the only Halloween sequel that actually makes sense for the most part. I've seen it a couple times now and I really appreciate what they did with it. I've seen it a couple times now and I really appreciate what they did with it. That being said it's not the most entertaining. 4, 2 and h20 had more of a showstopper feeling. That being said it fits in well with its predecessor and finally moves the franchise forward. I still feel like the doctor's reasoning is a little forced as well as the whole face off. But it still works and he still has his eyes unlike any installment following the second movie. There's definitely still a bunch if fun here and some great scenes. The fun as l showdown is fun and the Babysitter attack is both hilarious and intensely scary. All in all it's a fun ride that really concludes the story satisfyingly even though there's two more films on the way.

I found Halloween to be a huge disappointment. From the first set of scenes, it was pretty clear that this wasn't quite the sequel that I was hoping for. In a lot of ways it pays homage to the original, which is fine except for the fact that in doing so it comes off as a cheesy 80s slasher. Some people dig that, and I think that's why a lot of people who have seen this film have enjoyed it. I, however, was hoping for a more modern and somewhat serious take on the story. Instead, Halloween is a film with little-to-no character development, a hollow plot, a severe lack of on-screen kills, a mediocre script, and the production value feels like that of a Lifetime TV movie. It was a disappointment on almost all fronts for me, and doesn't give me any hope for any future Halloween films.… Expand

I have a lot of respect for Jamie Lee, so it's hard to give this review and honestly this movie was just awful. Not a very good movie all round, and twice as bad because they just had to make it all about female empowerment and all that crap. Only the music and Myers' look were any good, and that was because they already nailed that stuff in the original.

I'm a big fan of the franchise. Haven't looked forward to seeing a film in the theater like this in over a decade. That said, this "Halloween" kinda blew goats. That said, this "Halloween" kinda blew goats. The biggest problem is that the script didn't seem to have much drive from scene to scene at times. There were no great dialogue moments. Laurie's character felt flat and kind've under defined. Add to that the misguided undercurrent of not feminism as much as misandry was a turn off as well. They do make it a point to show that even when you are best friends and have an emotional connection with a girl, if you are a fat or less than hot male and you try to kiss her, it's an offense worthy of a gruesome death. Love the sensitivity of the #metoo crowd. Good to know. "H2O" was a far better written and more entertaining film. As I left the theater (which was dead silent for the entire film) I couldn't help but compare my overall lack of enthusiasm for what I just sat through and the elation and total satisfaction I felt after viewing "H2O." This film was kind've a loser.… Expand

I don't fully understand why this movie received so many positive ratings, as it was generally a cringefest of watching an 70-80 year old masked man still having the strength of someone in their prime chasing an old lady, with familialI don't fully understand why this movie received so many positive ratings, as it was generally a cringefest of watching an 70-80 year old masked man still having the strength of someone in their prime chasing an old lady, with familial issues, that also still appears to have the abilities of someone in their prime. Furthermore, the pacing, acting and script were all contrived and unconvincing. If it wasnt for the blood and Jamie Lee Curtis' constant shouting and blathering about the "boogeyman", this would have been more accurately described as a family drama.

The only reason why I gave this 3 stars is because of the title track composed in 1978.… Expand

Halloween hat eine signifikante Stärke. Die Musik. Dazu kommen manche Kameraperspektiven zur Geltung und verursachen eine gute Atmosphäre. Leider kommt der Film allerdings nicht gegen viele andere Horrorfilme an. Der Film hat gute Szenen, nur leider wird er mir bestimmt nicht im Gedächtnis bleiben. Das ist schade. Trotzdem kann ich den Film aufjedenfall weiterempfehlen.

Jamie Lee Curtis gives an excellent performance reprising her role as Laurie Strode, and she very much carries the film on her shoulders. Michael Myers was done incredibly well, and his portrayal stays true to John Carpenter's classic horror ideal. I liked that the narrative had a lot to say about the victims of trauma and horrific events, and did a pretty realistic job in portraying the good, the bad, and the ugly of Laurie Strode's reality. My main problems with the movie were the pacing, which was pretty slow for a slasher film, and some of the side character's arcs and performances. The ending of the movie is also a little muddy, as if the creators couldn't decide whether to end Halloween here, or leave the series open for another sequel. All in all, however, this is a fun spooky movie!… Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. What disappoints in this movie is when the trailers depicted this ultimate Laurie vs Michael movie, and that got me very excited, because it was going to be something different.

The problem is, it turns into this generic heavily cliched horror movie so quickly. All the characters, except for Laurie and her daughter are just there to be killed by Michael, and that's it. All those clumsy scenes where someone is running away and slips, or gets the piece of clothes stuck on a fence really annoy me because i thought this movie would be better than that.

Whenever Laurie was on screen though, it was almost perfect, her performance was great, and her story with her daughter was a definite high point in the movie, i just wish we could have gotten way more of that.

The plot twist where the doctor is also a psycho would have been amazing, but it goes nowhere. Although that shot where he wears the mask, to emphasize how psychotic he was, was a great shot. That twist could have been better handled.

Another moment i thought was great, was when they trapped Michael set the house on fire, where they show his eyes and he's just looking at them. That shot gave me goosebumps. But in the end they wasted a good opportunity for a great and different horror movie… Expand

Halloween Green's take on Carpenter's scariest night, is plausible but is certainly not palpable to the tone and nor is equally scary as it should have been. And the primary reason to that is theisn't that sinister as the original one..

Green's take on Carpenter's scariest night, is plausible but is certainly not palpable to the tone and nor is equally scary as it should have been. And the primary reason to that is the uncertainty that was kept alive in the original installment, that is clearly the missing puzzle in here. Although, Green does get few gigs right. And by right, I mean, bang on bucks. There are few jaw dropping revelations that can leave you shook and make you think twice before moving ahead. But that's as much as thinking you are about to get in here. It takes steps that are more harrowing then the previous one even ever dared to do so. And yet it still isn't that sinister as the original one. Probably, because of the innocence and the rawness that is left untouched in this one.

The narration is gripping and adaptive but isn't layered or thought provoking as it was anticipated. And as far as answers are concerned you are still left under the shades, all the ones that were essential, were given in the '78 version of Carpenter's. The editing and the conversations, at times makes it a bit spooky and sketchy and not on terms of the genre but on terms of the practicality that it attempts to achieve. The silent pitches that used to create the glass cutting tense environment on the screen, is a big void waiting to be filled. The horrors and screams seems manipulative and most of the time is spent upon creating obvious close calls that aren't going as expected. Green is a good filmmaker and there are clear signs of that.

But it takes a much more evil mind to create the perfect horror, and that is something that can neither be learnt or taught, it comes natural and unfortunately Green doesn't have it in him. Curtis is back on the suit except this time it is armored with guns blazing on both the shoulder. She is hurt and evolved with starry eyes that can kill anyone. She oozes power to a point where it creates catastrophe on others lives too, and mind you, this character that may look bad and rough on the outer surface and is actually soft on the inner side, doesn't actually go as one might think. Greer is convincing but the rest of the supporting cast doesn't get anything beyond your stereotypical pawns of a horror genre.

The sound effects are sharp and also at times a but loud, but since Green uses it as a tool in a narration especially when he has to transition from one scene to another, it works for the most part of it. The upgraded background score on the original version by Carpenter himself, is astonishing and breathtaking that creates a dreadful impact among the viewers. Halloween is a decent feature as both an individual and a sequel, but its existence is somewhat questionable and to listen to Green for around two hours for him to convince you for its reasons that are justified, seems a bit of a stretch.… Expand

It feels much longer than it actually is with the only viewers who could possibly be entertained being the young who have not seen this schlock all before and maybe the mentally retarded.
The makers and marketers are so vapid and lazy they couldn't (or stupidly chose not to) even come up with a variant on the original title which is nonsensical since it's not a remake and will only lead to pointless confusion in the future with the duplicate titles.… Expand

Halloween the original is my favorite all time scary movie. Maybe it's because I'm getting older but I was never scared during this film. The story is a little cheesy too. It's worth seeing just to hear the music but it did not meet my high hopes.

I've never cared much for these Hallowe'en films but this got decent reviews so i thought i'd try again. The problem is that Michael Myers is so boring as a serial killer that he ads nothing to the film.Jason Voorhees,even with the mask is far more expressive and fun than Myers.
There was also no gratuitous nudity in this which is disappointing.… Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Halloween (2018) brings back Laurie Strode,introduces lots of new characters, ignores the events of every Halloween movie except for the original, and takes place 40 years later after Halloween (1978).

I like how this film has Laurie and doesn't have the Thorn cult, the man in black, Dangertainment, or any Rob Zombie elements. However, I would believe Laurie would have PTSD after encountering Michael Myers twice more (Halloween, Halloween II, Halloween H20) than having PTSD after encountering him once (Halloween, Halloween 2018). I also don't like how this one ignores Halloween II, yet borrows elements from Halloween II and Halloween H20. (because Michael and Laurie aren't siblings in this movie unlike the other films).
Another problem is that some of the new characters are "important" even though they are just killed off or aren't in the rest of the film. But some of them are enjoyable.
In the end I really like Halloween 2018 for being an improvement, but it doesn't have a completely original story. It's good, but I would rather watch Halloween II (1981) and Halloween H20 (no Halloween: Resurrection) with the original Halloween.… Expand

Saw it twice in two nights, and I liked it MUCH better the second time for some reason. The call-outs (and reversals) from the first movie are great, and the Easter Eggs (Season of Witch Silver Shamrock masks) are fun. The teenagers are extremely well-cast, especially the girl playing Strode's granddaughter. The dialogue among the teens is especially well-written, actually. The worst part of the film is the new doctor. He can't hold a candle to Donald Pleasance's Loomis. And those podcasters...ugh! Still, I had a great with this. Highly recommended.… Expand

Laurie Strode (Jamie Lee Curtis) lives a life away from the rest of the world, she has an estranged relationship with her daughter and granddaughter. Still haunted by the events that took place Halloween night 40 years ago. Michael Myers is in a high security mental asylum but is due to be transferred on Halloween night, the 40 year anniversary of his original killing spree. Things play out about as well as you expect and this slasher horror movie starts delivering exactly what it promises. A well made horror that isn't afraid to take some dark turns and keeps the atmosphere for the most part. This is largely due to the soundtrack, one of the best examples of using a score effectively in a horror movie. Instantly recognisable and enough to send chills down your spine. This sequel is definitely made for the fans, it's been building up to the Laurie v Michael Myers final confrontation I was just a little disappointed the story kept drifting back to the high school teenagers and their mundane problems. When we meet Laurie Strode in this movie she's unrecognisable to her character in the original Halloween. She's not going to be terrorized, she's the badass 'ain't talking no **** grandma who's spent her life preparing for meeting Michael Myers again determined to finish him off and that is all I cared about. No it's not perfect and it doesn't quite live up to the original Halloween but it's entertaining and definitely one to check out. Your perfect choice for the time of year. Recommended.… Expand

Who the hell like this movie? This is supposed to be scary? I grew up playing Resident Evil 1,2,3 and 4. If you thought this was scary than you will crap your pants playing those games. What the ****??? The kills aren't suspenseful or scary, they just happen, I've seen a thousand of these in Scream and Friday the 13th and all other franchises already, am I supposed to be impressed? There are a bunch of people with guns in this movie and they can't figure out how to take out a single guy with a knife, what a **** cliché. Brief, this movie is an unoriginal boring piece of sh**, screw anyone who likes this movie.… Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I get the feeling some may not have actually watched Halloween 1978 via all the reviews on various sites. They seem to say this new Halloween is the "sequel" to the 1978 original and that Michael has been incarcerated ever since. Problem: Michael got away in the original Halloween. It would work if they called this movie Halloween 3, but the body count referred to would have to be higher than "5 people". It would be feasible considering Michael "burned to death" in Halloween 2 they could have captured him then since both movies occurred on the same night. Some critics have said there was closure by the end. I say, It was left wide open and there was absolutely no closure. There were way too many valleys/painfully slow moments. It could have been so much better than it was. Die hard Michael Myers fan here, but I couldn't disregard enough of this movie to keep it interesting for me. Way too much just didn't make sense or attempt to stay in line with how the story really went. You just have to imagine that there were no Halloween movies after the original 1978. Also, Michael would not have gotten away in the original's ending. I had such high hopes for this film, but personally, I walked away disappointed.… Expand

Tropes and clichés aside, this Halloween movie is more than just a generic sequel or a failed remake to a very boring franchise. I think this could be the exact movie where the Halloween franchise can finally be redeemed after being treated with boring sequels and a terrible remake that no one wanted in the first place for so many years. Yeah, it suffers from common horror tropes and clichés, but at least you can tolerate it more than the other installments in this franchise. This movie also makes our two main characters, Michael Myers and Laurie Strode, feel relevant again even if they are still suffered from common horror tropes and clichés.… Expand

Let me just save you the time and effort of reading further. I really feel badly that I’m devoting these 3 minutes to even recognize it as a thing that exists. It’s the worst piece of film I’ve seen in years; I couldn’t even laugh. It’s edited in the classic style of a bipolar chimpanzee with scissors and glue, and severe ADHD. What are your thoughts , Angel? “(loud laughter, followed up with a jarring snort, proclaiming to the house with an all inclusive sweep of her arm:)These motherf%%*#^s think this is a great movie!? F$&@ing idiots!” Yes Angel, we are in Clintonville, hipsters like things that suck, for the irony or something. The terrifying thing about the original Michael Myers: his absence from the screen. The Shape is a phantom, he just exudes his menace, not his visage, silently hides in the shadows, stalking, offering a split second glimpse, or was that just my eyes playing tricks? Smelling out and savoring the palpable unease he creates in his prey, until that day comes, then....BAM!!!! There he is !!! I'm a HUGE fan of the entire series. I even enjoy most of the objectively bad films to varying degrees. This film was fine. Looked great. JLC was excellent. "The Shape" was as menacing as ever. "The Shape" was as menacing as ever. That being said, this is a flawed film. The flaws are two-fold, but inter-related. First, with the exception of Laurie, and, perhaps, a character with limited screen time--the supporting characters are neither compelling or memorable. Part of the problem is that it almost appears that this movie had a television series narrative as opposed to a feature film. There are too many characters and subplots to sustain any interest in either of the aforementioned. Eventually, you just want some of them to get killed off--to return the focus to Laurie and Michael. My second issue is that, as are many films in 2018, the male characters are, by and large, ineffectual boneheads--leaving Laurie as the only competent person in the film. I have no problem with JLC playing the hero--but rooting for male "good guys" to get killed so as to get them off the screen (because they are so annoying) is not optimal screenwriting. I think some of the review "
inflation" is due to the fact that to some extent, the film is "woke"--especially in a #metoo respect. In my estimation, the movie would have been a solid "8" if the male characters were written with a modicum of realism and empathy.… Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Whoever gave this good reviews must've caught the original 1978 movie instead. Think about it; they're both named exactly the same thing. That's the only explanation I got as the 2018 'reboot' or whatever label they slapped on it is a turkey. 0 scores always feel a tad reactionary but I usually sit and think of one positive then another and even crap movies can tick a few boxes. The 1 is for the music. There is nothing else positive. They completely stripped away the air of invincibility Michael Myers carried whilst finding absolutely zero motivation for his insatiable killing sprees - something even the inferior sequels managed to come up with. The cast isn't stellar but both female leads are capable of so much more than what was on display here. The one interesting character, Hawkins, is brushed aside much too easily to even merit more than this mention and honestly, the audience is supposed to feel connected to the characters in these movies especially - not wish them dead. Halloween 2 (1981) is one of the best slasher movies ever made and perfectly complimented the original. Resurrection aside the others were serviceable and did not deserve to be retconned for a mediocre hypejob like this.… Expand

When I first heard that we would be getting a new sequel to the 1978 classic film, once again starring Jamie Lee Curtis and with John Carpenter on board, I began anticipating the release of this film. Now that it's finally out I can happilyWhen I first heard that we would be getting a new sequel to the 1978 classic film, once again starring Jamie Lee Curtis and with John Carpenter on board, I began anticipating the release of this film. Now that it's finally out I can happily say that Halloween (2018) Is a fantastic Halloween movie and is without a doubt in my mind the best sequel the series has had to date. There are many call backs to the original here, but whereas other series can really force them in (the pun there may have hinted at what I'm referring to) Halloween (2018) has them in ways that work as both fantastic fan service and great easter eggs. Jamie Lee Curtis is fantastic in this movie, playing a tougher, physically stronger version of Laurie but also very damaged and mentally scarred by the murders of her friends that has caused her to push aside her family. What surprised me about her performance was that she wasn't just a badass as we saw in the trailers, she is also very emotional and seeing that aspect of her in a PTSD like way, really made me feel for her. The supporting cast is mostly good such as Judy Greer as Laurie's daughter and Andi Matichak as her granddaughter Allison. Michael obviously returns and is not shying away when it comes to brutally murdering people. This film has the best kills in the whole series and unlike the original show tons of blood. You do have some typical teenager cliches, but they feel mostly at home considering the original was built all around them. The films does a great job with its cinematography, I loved the long tracking shots of Michael, they were very suspensful and were backed up by the amazing soundtrack. There is a twist near the end that is bothering a lot of people but I actually liked the twist besides one thing that happens in the scene. Otherwise the movie was absolutely fantastic and deserves all the praise it's getting.… Expand

Green and McBride's biggest claim to fame with this movie is that they didn't insult the Halloween franchise, which is more than can be said for 5, 6, Resurrection and Rob Zombie. They realized that there was great value in abandoning the bullcrap that had been piled onto the original over the years, and they proceeded to make a movie with so much less fat on it. Good on them.

The problem is simply this: they still haven't come any closer to that feeling that sets Halloween apart from any other slasher. They didn't embrace simplicity. They barely gave Michael any of that "he likes to watch" magic. They couldn't resist the temptation to get pretty damn gory. They paced it like a modern movie, which means a lot of moving and shaking from scene to scene. Perfectly enjoyable (hey, it's more Michael,) but shows no deeper understanding of what would have made this a truly momentous horror experience. I don't rate it as any more noteworthy or laudable than H20 was 20 years ago. And for the record, Halloween 4 is still the most accomplished sequel in terms of being tonally faithful to the original.… Expand

The bus crash in the beginning was well done, but then the pace sagged until it picked up again in the last half hour. “Happy Halloween, Michael”.

Forget Jigsaw and Paranormal Activity, because The Shape is back and he’s taking back Halloween. At first I wasn’t sure what to expect when hearing rumors of a remake or reboot of this worn out franchise, which“Happy Halloween, Michael”.

At first I wasn’t sure what to expect when hearing rumors of a remake or reboot of this worn out franchise, which should’ve stopped in 1978. Heck, even when this was announced, I rolled my eyes. However, my interest peaked when Jamie Lee Curtis would be reprising the role as Laurie Strode and Nick Castle as Michael Myers. The new creators made it clear this is a continuation of the original, not a reboot. Plus John Carpenter returning to composer new music for the film. Everything was set and this quickly became my most anticipated movie of fall. And the results are quite interesting.

Halloween (2018) is a lot of fun and a solid return to form. Not great, just good. There are flaws and some wasted potential, especially having an identity crisis. However, it will satisfy any Halloween fan for how well they respected the source material and the characters - erasing the sequels that came before it. With all the different interpretations over the years following Carpenter vision, yet I can say David Gordon Green followed it up closely.

Jamie Lee Curtis is absolutely fantastic in this movie and probably gives the best performance of her career. Judging from the promotional material, I initially thought it’s going for the trope of strong “hard as nails” female lead without any character. Nothing could be further from the truth. We instead get a powerful look on trauma, especially the dinner table scene. This only transforms her into a strong and bad-ass lead with a fantastic character arc. By the end, she’s not the victim anymore.

Michael is back and brutal than ever. A nasty force of nature and the film works wonderfully whenever his on screen. More in line with Rob Zombie's version in terms of how he kills. Even when you don’t fully see the kill, it’s the sound work and the aftermath that leaves a horrific sight. And you feel bad for some of the victims, as the film at least gives some of them a character before biting the dust. It’s more terrifying with no context for his killings that the sequels, to put it bluntly, “f**ked up”. You really do get the sense that he is, purely and simply, evil.

David Gordon Green, best known for comedies and also dramas like “Joe” and “Stronger”, not forgetting those two. Him and Danny Mcbride, a comedy duo, making a new Halloween movie is something you never thought would happen. I mean, if you ask me seven years ago when “Your Highness” came out, that these guys future project will be the next Halloween - I would stare at you in awe for how crazy you sound - now here we are. What stood out to me is how Gordon Green went old school and made the wise choice of keeping Michael in the shadows. When unmasked, it's hard to make out his face. I also liked the reverse-parallels to the original film. This being his first horror movie, I thought this was a good attempt.

The new score from John Carpenter is the highlight of the film. The mix of retro and modern flawlessly blended. ”Michael Kills Again” and "The Shape Hunts Allyson" are instant classic. I know there's no chance of it winning, but I hope this soundtrack at least gets nominated for best Original Score at the Oscars.

Sadly, this is where my problems come in. The second act is devoted to Laurie's granddaughter and some weak teenager drama that I couldn't care less for. Along with her friends who are just bait for Michael. We’re wasting time watching these characters while the most compelling element of the film is brushed aside.

The comedic aspects didn’t work for me. I didn’t laugh at any of the humor, as it took away the suspense. When you get a scene with two police officers in a car talking about their lunch or get a line like “I got peanut butter on my penis”, it doesn't fit the tone. As I said early, this suffers from an identity crisis.

Also Dr. Sartain (Michael’s doctor) is literally one of the worst characters in the movie. Without spoiling anything, but the shift in character comes out of nowhere and the reasoning behind it is ridiculous. Nothing good came out of it.

I wish the tension and suspense was heightened up during scenes when it was needed. Because Michael seems to appear in places with no build up. No shots of him waiting or stalking, just the striking. The finale felt a bit rushed and anticlimactic, in my opinion.

Overall rating: Despite the flaws, I still think this is a solid movie and worth checking out.

During these 40 years, the other side of the event, Laurie Strode tried to go on with her life, marrying and having children, but always looking foward in her life for a possible reencounter, so she train and also trained her daughter for a possible situation. After a bus crash, Michael escape and start his slaughter once again, making possible a confrontation with Laurie. Directed and written by David Gordon Green and also written by Jeff Fradley and Danny McBride.
The storytelling did a good job in first introduce the new characters and make very clear who they are and what they think about the old events, how the trauma of Laurie did affected her later on in her life, they made this aspects very clear wich was important, you really feel that the movie of 78 is also living in here. One thing that it was very important that they build for this movie to work, is that for us to care about the characters, wich indeed happened, first i already did cared for Laurie Strode, and the situations that they placed here did me care for some other persons around the movie, of course there are some people that we just wanted to see smashed by Meyers, by there is a concern aspect in our part for the characters, they build it with dialogues and letting we feel the family. One thing that i didn't liked very much, is the fact that the movie have a more laid back moments, there are some jokes out of time that really took out the tense of some moments. There are some moments of party and relationship with teenage drama that is completely displayed in this movie, that was so anticlimatic, in the original also had these, but they didn't wasted time in showing that, just mentioning.
There is some small conversations about how the killer can influence the victim and how the victim influence the killer, they did talked a bit about the psyche of the assassin and the victim. This helps to define the personality of Laurie.
The movie isn't as scary as the original, that is for sure, but still, it does have some tense moments that are very deserving to be mentioned. The persecution in the streets of haddonfield are very well done, you can feel the despair of being hunted by Myers, there are scenes inside of houses that you just don't where he is that was very scary and tense. During the last run of the movie all of happens is a full show, they completely nailed it, the whole final sequence is great, scary, badass and even emotional.
The kills in this movie are also very creative, some of them mixing moments of fear with badass situation for Myers, it is nasty and gore in some parts, you can see how Myers is still very badass, there are scenes that he is hiding in the shadows stalking just as he likes to, there are different weapons that he uses and differents methods.
Jamie Lee Curtis did a show in this movie, for me she could completely keep the essence of her character, and still put another layer on her, i completely bought the trauma that she put on her, there are some emotional moments and some desespere moments, she did a great job, so on the concern with the others together with the hate, i found her, once again, great. Judy Greer plays the daughter of Laurie, she did a nice job, you could tell that she wanted to protect her children and had a different way to see things than her mother, in moments of action she was a badass as well in a certain moment. Andi Matichak played the grand daugther of Laurie, she is a teenager that tries to understand and put her grandma in the social with them once again, she was nice. Haluk Bilginer plays a crazy doctor, he did a nice job, he convinced me in his blindness in not seeing what he had to.
The movie cinematography was very good, the movie used references from the original movie, where we had shots of Michael doing something or just standing in somewhere, and in this one we have very similar shots, but with another one, doing or standing in the same way, implying that the hunter has now changed sides, and that was just beautiful to watch. There are some sequences without cuts that are just gorgeousl filmed, it was great.
The soundtrack of this was made by John Carpenter once again, and it is fantastic. He keeped the gentle sounding of the original, but it did had some epicness imput on that, in other moments it was just the classic, like i felt that i was watching the one from 78 once again, that was great. He also created some new themes, the new tracks are fabulous, inspiring, scary and full of adrenaline, i loved the soundtrack in here.… Expand

The umpteenth rebootquel of the franchise. This time we go all the way back to the beginning, something that is becoming an increasing phenomenon in the moviegoing marketplace. This time we go all the way back to the beginning, something that is becoming an increasing phenomenon in the moviegoing marketplace. People don't want remakes (the original is too special), but they also don't want sequels (cheap money grabs). But how about both in one? While parts of it are quite good, other parts are downright lazy and woebegone.

Although it purports to be a direct sequel to the first film (inexplicably disregarding the 2nd film to get rid of the brother/sister storyline), it homages, and in some cases takes scenes and plot point from nearly every other Halloween film. It's like a mashup, but set to the tune of reboot. Laurie's PTSD storyline is taken from H2O, but cranked up to 11. The first time Michael picks up a knife again in the kitchen with the old lady is taken from 2. The doctor character does his best Loomis. The bathroom kill scene with the podcasters is from both 4 and the Zombie remake. The final shot is from 4.

We are asked to take Laurie as as serious character study -- she has PTSD and is estranged from the family she ostensibly loves -- but instead of her learning anything about herself she is ultimately proven right and let off the hook for her years of misplaced paranoia, since in this film Michael was somehow captured right after the first film ended and has been locked up ever since.

Why disregard the 2nd film, which could have given her plausible reason to still fear Michael? They never found his burnt body and he could still be out there. H2O knew to do this, but here we get a half-assed Michael locked up storyline for the third time, and yet again he escapes while changing facilities.

This film also includes strands of desperate thematic relevance. Michael supposedly represents the patriarchy. While a slasher movie might be a good fit for that kind of exploration, was Halloween really the right platform? If the plan was really to return Michael to his mysterious randomly killing ways, how can he represent the patriarchy? (In another strange twist he doesn't kill a baby when given the chance. I don't want him to kill a baby but why even address that?). It's all just very weird and out of place in the overall context of this film.

There are good moments however. Michael's mask is back to its grand evil beauty. It's haunted, aged, worn and sad. Like how this whole movie should have been. Jamie is fantastic, and the climax actually raises some goosebumps, if ultimately underwhelming. The score is appropriately electronic, with a good balance of referencing the original and sprucing it up.

Green has a few nifty long tracking shots in this, but they feel like homage pastiche. Both ostentatious and not enough. Atmosphere is mostly lacking, the whole film is edited so fast and no shot lingers for too long. It doesn't have a creeping singular vision, instead its stuck in the past with a few face slaps of modern relevance to make it feel fresh and new.… Expand
