This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. GotG Vol. 2 isn’t quite as good as its predecessor, but even though it does fall into the “sequel is worse” category, it still remains a solid and entertaining MCU blockbuster and comes close enough to the original to be enjoyable. The script doesn’t have the finesse of the first movie causing the humor to drag and be a little over the top at points, but the actors do a fine job of getting around this causing a few of these moments to be genuinely funny. It’s nice that this movie takes us deeper into the character of Peter Quill by exploring his family, a route that was set up well at the end of Guardians 1. What’s even better about this is watching how Peter learning about and discovering his true family impacts his relationship with his “new” family: his fellow Guardians. This impact adds some emotional depth to the film, and makes Peter Quill a surprisingly complex character and takes him through a really nice arc that forces him to truly consider his relationships with those he cares about the most. Pratt supplements this with another great performance as the character, and his fellow Guardians castmates hit the spot as well. The movie makes sure to make good use of Kurt Russell as Ego by giving him plenty of screen time, a backstory, and a few emotional moments of his own. It also kicked ass to see the true power and capabilities of Yondu’s flying arrow, something we got a taste of in the first movie but was amplified substantially in this movie. It’s also still a relief and breath of fresh air that this film has no connection to the Avengers and the rest of the cinematic universe other than us knowing that it’s a part of it. As mentioned before, what really prevents this movie from reaching the heights of GotG 1 for me is the humor, since even with the acting the script hampers this movie’s ability to be as funny as GotG 1. GotG 2 is nonetheless still a fun and entertaining movie and is sure to leave viewers satisfied as the credits roll. Expand

The plot, if you could call it that, starts about 90 minutes into the movie and is barely passable, much of the humor misses the mark and the characterisation is woeful. On the plus side it is colourful and some of the sound effects are good, its big budget nonsense that you don't even need half a brain cell to watch. How do people rate this garbage so highly? There's nothing to it, special effects and nothing of any substance. I grew tired of the superhero genre after Civil War and have just returned to see what I was missing, it turns out I didn't miss anything just more of the same dumb, formulaic, Marvel-by-numbers. Its biggest weakness is a trudging expository middle section that really dampens its rewatchability, but everything else is great. Great visuals, lots of humor, wit, and fun, outright nutty and nihilistic in just the right doses, and sentimental and serious in just the right doses. This movie accomplished a really big and unexpected thing which is that it made me actually really enjoy the characters Nebula and Yondu, who seemed like just generic villains in the first film. Rocket is a highlight of this film, like the first one. The movie has a big heart and really feels like its about something, and that saves it from being "just another marvel movie". This and the first Guardians are my two favorite films of the MCU. So glad to see James Gunn will still be writing and directing the third one. It wouldn't be the same without him. Expand

The good news is that 'Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 2' does not disgrace the first 'Guardians of the Galaxy' and is actually just as good. Like as was said with 'Guardians of the Galaxy', is it as amazing as the IMDb rating (which is something that really shouldn't be taken to heart and is often blown out of proportion here on IMDb) and ecstatic reviews suggest? To me, not quite. Is 'Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 2' well made and entertaining? Absolutely.

A couple of the gags fall a little flat and the film does drag in the middle act. That's pretty much it for the complaints however.

'Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 2', reiterating what was said in my review for the first film due to having the same strengths, boasts spectacular special effects, gorgeously psychedelic colours, slick-yet-with-enough-visual-depth cinematography (nothing cartoonish or plastic here) and very colourful and atmospheric sets that more than effectively makes one think they are immersed in this galaxy. Costumes and make-up are also of very good quality. The soundtrack and score is rousing and touchingly nostalgic, really making the toes tap. The action is beautifully edited, choreographed with lots of entertainment value and thrills and is at best exhilarating, there's plenty of it without feeling too much.

James Gunn directs with style and a sure hand, always seeming as if he knew what tone he was going for and who he was aiming at. Both 'Guardians of the Galaxy' films are far and above anything else he's done and his best overall direction are in them as well. Personally really enjoyed the way that 'Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 2' was written too, most of the jokes are enormously entertaining and the film also has heart.

The story is mostly energetic and compelling, let down only by some of the middle act. At least however it doesn't have as many random misplaced moments and over sentimentality, even if it's not exactly original (not that that is a desperately bad thing).

Characters are on the most part incredibly colourful and engaging, with a great chemistry throughout. Peter is a likable lead character, but it's adorable and hilarious Baby Groot, scene-stealing Rocket and touchingly conflicted Yondu steal the show.

Once again, like in the first film, Chris Pratt is highly charismatic, Zoe Saldana is suitably fiery, Karen Gillan is imposingly formidable, Dave Bautista induces lots of laughs and charm while showing a very intensely played vengeful side and a surprisingly well-cast Vin Diesel does a great job as Baby Groot. Bradley Cooper stands out, being a sheer delight as Rocket. Kurt Russell is an enigmatic presence and Michael Rooker is quite touching as Yondu.

In conclusion, a lot of fun and very well made, every bit as good as the first, a few flat jokes and draggy middle aside. 8/10 Bethany Cox

First off let me explain that I am not one to obsess about Marvel films (as I feel the DCEU should get a fair shot), but Guardians of the Galaxy has always been an exception. The first film expertly combined the right elements of humor and heart that added up to an all right joy ride. In many respects this film is not very different. You can expect to see the same goofy, outlandish, yet hilarious humor from the first movie in this one. The humor is especially attributed to Baby Groot, which adds plenty of interesting dynamics to the group. The humor may not feel as fresh however, as it is very similar to the first film in this regard. The thing that puts this film above the last one is its ability to include even more heart and emotional depth. Volume 2 expands on the developments of previous characters and works to give depth and multiple dimensions to some anti-heroes not explored in the first film (ex. Gamora and Gandor). Overall, if you were a fan of the first film you should enjoy this film. Even as a person who has not read the comics nor is obsessed with any superhero movie, I found a lot to enjoy with this movie. Worth the watch (or two)! Expand

I personally believe the sequel to be superior to the original in almost every way, because it focuses more on what makes the Marvel Cinematic Universe so great. 3 dimensional characters, fascinating relationship, incredible set pieces, and tons of heart. Without giving anything, just go see this movie. If you love the first one, you will love this one. It doesn't rely a lot of the baggage created by the other films and instead focusing on telling a great story about the Guardians themselves filled with action and comedy, all wrapping up in a surprisingly emotional climax.

The humourThe main complaints about Guardians of the Galaxy Volume #2 is that there is unessacary humour, another dissapointing villain, average plot and a lack of character development, and most of these complaints are fully justified. The humour feels out of place, especially in serious moments, it felt as if Marvel were just trying too hard on this one, and while Kurt Russell does put in a very good performance as "Ego" he wasn't fleshed out enough, like most marvel villains. However this movie still includes everything a good superhero needs, great protagonists, an excellent score and brilliant cgi. This is not a bad movie by any stretch, it's just dissapointing. Expand

The first one was good and the second one offers more of the same. There are a few silly changes though. The strangest one was going from Drax not understanding metaphors to him just delivering sex jokes all the time. It works, but it just feels a little off for his character. We do see bonding between almost every character pair though I wish they had developed on some of them more. Hopefully, part 3 will give us those.

The best part of the film are the character moments. Each character is essentially paired off with another and given screen time together so that they can develop and we learn amore about their relationship and the type of person they were. Somehow, the film manages to do it for the large cast of characters that are present. My problem with the film is the need to have two villains. One of them did not really feel like they needed to be in this one. They provided some interference in the climax to prevent it from making it too easy for the heroes, but it still felt like it could have been done by the main villain or someone else. There was no need to bring in two sets of villains. Luckily, the branched plots do gradually get themselves back together for a satisfying ending.

Surprise! Now the story and journey of its characters has significant meaning. Glorious visuals and a decent (if stereotypical) villain round out a much more satisfying experience than the empty vapidness of the first Guardians movie. The plot is still predictable in some ways, but there is a major redemption arc for one character that completely lifts the finale of the story to epic territory. Overall, Guardians 2 is a fine example of Marvel balancing seriousness with levity.

Worth watching in tandem with the first movie, as Guardians 2 answers many of the questions left hanging in Guardians 1, and both are better films because of it.

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 is a decent sequel to the first movie but doesn't stand out that much.

It's a movie still full of jokes and running gags, but this time there are too many of them. And whenever there are too many jokes in a movie, it most often means the movie's plot is pretty bad. Actually Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 has a better main plot than the first movie's. And the soundtrack still impresses, just like the first film.

Vol. 2 introduces the Celestials to the MCU. Kurt Russell stars as Ego the Living Planet, and is Star Lord's biological father, which means Star Lord is a Celestial, too. The plot is about Ego who plans to conquer the Universe by seeding thousands of planets with his offsprings hoping to produce another Celestial. Out of all of them only Star Lord can help him. Ravager Yondu Udonta makes a point of distinguishing a biological father from a true loving "daddy". The main plot is actually nice, but it derails when other sub-plots are in the spotlight, like the golden race of the Sovereign, the Ravager mutineers led by Taserface, and the other Ravager clans led by Sylvester Stallone's version of Stakar Ogord.

All in all Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 is another great, fun movie in the MCU. I just wish it was better.

As always, Star Lord has been the easiest to identify with of any big screen superhero for me, as someone who also carries his mom's favorite music around with him everywhere he goes. It manages to be even funnier then the first film in many parts, with a particular flair for quick mood switches and delivery. The visual effects are impressive, but that doesn't mean much coming from the kind of budget Marvel films have. However, I don't think it quite captures the magic of the first film. Expand

More to follow...

Addendum: I changed my mind. The script is denser than the first and this film is it's own and not a rehash of old ideas. Very satisfying the second time around in high def and with subtitles. If I could give this film an 8.8 on metacritic, I would. Worth purchasing on BluRay or streaming. Worth not waiting for Netflix or HBO.

A noticeable downgrade from the first film, humour often feels forced and the film in general feels quite lackluster in comparison to GOTG 1. Not a bad film by any means just disappointing.

It has the usual great things, like good jokes, great action and some decent drama. However, this one has a few flaws. First off, some of the jokes don't land very well. They run with a few too long, ruining an otherwise hilarious streak the film creates for itself. Secondly, the Plot is all over the Place for a while, which is a shame because the main plot is the most interesting thing by far. Lastly, I will say that I don't know where they will go from here. I won't spoil, but they may have blew their load with this one plot wise.

Other than those few flaws though, Guardians is another good entry into the MCU. Not my favorite by any means, but one I am definitely happy I saw.

This is a widely creative story. Like the its predecessor, this is both funny and surprisingly heartfelt, considering the chaotic world of the Guardians. There is some wonderful character work in this. (The cast is great across the board.) I appreciate how much this feels like a natural extension of the first. So rarely do films and their character arcs have such clear progression.

There are a couple issues I had. It felt like Drax (Dave Bautista) was dumbed down. Also, I like new character Mantis (Pom Klementieff), but there is the issue of the changes to her character in comparison to the original comics. Writer and director James Gunn has a fondness for making big changes to comic characters. Usually that works. Here, however, here we have a martial artist female hero transformed into a meeker, more reactive-than-proactive character; problematic.

The whole thing looks great. The first film was distinctive, but this one raises the bar. The sci-fi designs are colorful and creative. The CGI in this is amazing. Really, I think this one of the greatest visual attempts in film. James Gunn's direction and incorporation of classic songs works so well.

Overall, I can't stress how good this is. I highly recommend.

This sequel continues a few subplots which make us feel big empathy for characters even if it didn't have a main story until the half of the movie. When in the previous film the last chapter wasn't really good, in this scenario the final is by far the best part of the show.
One of the biggest advantages of the new Guardians(besides amazing music) was Ego, really complex and interesting character, playing by charismatic Kurt Rusell and voice acting of Rocket Raccoon by Bradley Cooper. Also visual effects of every battle and planet are done incredibly well.
There are moments when we're getting one gag after another and then the serious scene but all of them in conclusion make film more entertaining. Drax's lines were giving me smile every time, just like his relation with Mantis also Yondu and Ravagers didn't waste their screen time. Although this formula works perfectly for our adventure-comedy-space opera, I think Marvel will have to take some more risky steps forward for the GotG Vol.3.

I am not particularly a huge comic book fangirl, nor even particularly a comic book movie fangirl. And yet I have found myself in the position with many others, where I am seeing nearly three Marvel movies a year. I don't have the energy to open up the discussion on DC today, let's stick with the Feige-verse for now.

I enjoy almost every MCUl movie I see. They know what they are doing, they know they can put out 3 movies, all between B and A-'s, and print money. They have had an absurd record as far as opening weekends go, I am not sure if there has been a Marvel property in recent history that hasn't been objectively a massive success. But the first Guardians of the Galaxy was when it really first kicked in for me. I am a sucker for classic music used in new, fun ways (translation-not Suicide Squad ways) and the cast and plot really just made for my favorite Marvel movie. And since Edgar Wright never got to do Ant Man, the original Guardians remains my favorite. That being said, I was anxious going into the second. The first won me over by surprise, and I knew that my expectations for the second would only leave me at least a little underwhelmed. And I was terrified they would over use baby Groot. They did, but I digress.
That being said, this was a really solid, fun summer blockbuster. I had more complaints about this than in the initial, but this still stands in my top Marvel movies just in story and execution. It feels like a different, more off beat property than The Avengers, which is tiring slowly to me. The Guardians movies just seem to have a more relatable rag tag quality than the very classic superheroes of the rest of the MCU, save for Wolverine. James Gunn also walks the line of "funny" and "real emotions that make you want to cry while listening to Cat Stevens" better than any other current director in comic book franchises.

It would be hard to get too into this without getting into spoilers, so let's just talk Kurt Russell. I was not as much of a fan about the plot of the sequel as the first, but Kurt Russell is just the best, so I will forgive the weird father plot line that got really out of hand quickly. This highlights the main issue I have with the MCU. The scale of the conflicts are always way out of proportion. Not every movie has to have the entire fate of the universe on the line. Sometimes there can just be one truly evil person who wants to ruin one to five people's lives, and that can be interesting too.

But as I said, nothing with 70's Kurt Russell could disappoint me. 7.5/10

The amazing visuals (Like the 1980's took LSD and threw up rainbows) combined with great sound design make it a feast for the senses. Unlike some of the more story centered and poignant Marvel Films ie. Captain America Civil War, Guardians is more about the characters, the ride, and having big fun adventures in space. It does have it's emotional moments, hitting almost as hard as the first film, but in the end James Gunn has lovingly crafted a fun comic book movie. While that may not suit every critics taste, you'd have to be twisted to walk out of the movie without having laughed out loud a dozen times; and that alone is such a treat it's easily worth the ticket price. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The one true complaint that can be said about this film is that it isn't quite as good as the fantastic first film. I, personally say that it's about equal when all things are considered. It's not quite as funny, but the character development means that you become invested in all of the characters more than at the end of the first film. The soundtrack is amazing as ever. It's slightly cliché in parts, but the villain is actually developed and Kurt Russell's performance solidifies him as one of the far better villains that the Marvel heroes have faced. In my opinion, the third best villain Marvel has had. His plan made sense to me and honestly I really rooted against him. The performances are excellent and it's an enjoyable film. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I liked Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 1 much more than Vol. 2. I would describe Vol. 2 as Star Trek 5 meets Spaceballs meets National Lampoons Vacation meets Tron: Legacy meets Dr. Phil. I just didn't like the whole search for Peter's father who turned out to be a God, and then that made Peter a God...sigh. I would have much rather dealt with building the bridgework to eventually toppling Thanos. I will be much more cautious about spending my hard earned money to watch Vol. 3, I will probably wait for it to get to the dollar theater. I hate to say that because I love the characters so much, and I was glad to see them again, but I thought there was too much anxiety, interpersonal turmoil and also Drax was too goofy and chummy. I gave it a 7 out of 10, which is probably being a little nice. Expand

Michael Rooker steals the show as Yondu... in fact, Nebula steals the show as well (Not the golden ones, the blue ones.) Their involvement with the Guardians was intriguing and ultimately ends up being something bittersweet (for us, it's **** great however) but unfortunately the writing for these characters is so great, that the Guardians themselves are overshadowed in their own movie. The pacing of this movie is off to the point that it's hard to determine where the first act starts and the second act begins... when I say the pacing, I mean the fact that it seems like it's going through the motions. Luckily, the motions in this case are still fresh because it's the second installment. This movie is funny, has action (because if it didn't it would be pretty dead plot-wise actually), and maintains the likeability of the Guardians... I was close to giving this a 7 though... But Drax and Mantis were so great together that I figured it would be stupid to give a movie where such minor characters have such great chemistry together a 7... so 8/10. Expand

Temos também mr blue sky,my sweet lord, brandy you´re a fine girls entre outras ótimas faixas. Lots of small detail and large variety of creatures, technology, and worlds. It's kind of got it all; space battles, cyborgs, pirates, fantasy jungle, magic, etc. Onto the plot. On some level it is commendable that they bring all these different genres together, at the same time, I realize that it can help make a movie more linear when it sticks to a premise, even if it limits the scope of possibility. For a while, it's unclear what the premise is here. There's a motley crew traveling through space, and when one of them impulsively steals some piece of technology, they find themselves facing a military onslaught. This predicament seems to propel much of the plot for the movie's first half. It rather abruptly shifts focus to the white male lead battling his father, fittingly, for the sake of the galaxy/universe or whatever. It seems like this would be a broad enough plotline to be compelling, but it feels a bit artibitrary. First of all, the whole thing is solely based around two particular characters. The battle is not literally constrained to two individuals, but metaphorically and in terms of dialog, it's clear that the whole thing revolves around two people. Secondly, there is no clear right vs. wrong in the leadup to the final battle. This isn't a shortcoming in and of itsef, but it does make the implied moral of the story unconvincing. To be more specific (spoiler): The dilemma ("final boss", if you will) is that the god-dad wants to harnass his son's power to spread grey goo on every planet. However, in the millions of years since spawning in space as a floating brain (I'm not kidding), the dad's done some pretty nasty **** like killing a bunch of kids after failed breeding experiments, and worst of all, giving our progragonist's mom cancer. All this is too much for our "hero", so he says **** it and gets everyone to team up to kill his dad. It can't just me be who thinks a singularity would be kind of cool. I found myself basically rooting against them at the end. Onto the dialog, which is definitely one of more notable parts of this series. It's relentless comedy, rapid banter, and rather static characters with little "in jokes" that develop over time. It's clear that the screenwriters intended this to be enjoyed by a 'broad' audience. Winning the 'least intellectual' award is Groot the baby. His catchphrase is a forced meme, but worst of all it doesn't even make any sense. C3PO translates R2D2's beeps because they're robots. Cartman understands Kenny because ... he has a strong accent? But what kind of logic is it where the racoon can translate the singular phrase "i am groot" to a full language based on intonation? It's nonsensical, and really just comedic. More generally, though, the dialog here tries to be edgy in a way that is somewhat unconventional, similar to Deadpool or Rick and Morty perhaps. It's also frustratingly omnipresent. They're flying away from dozens of hostile ships, through a asteroid field, and the racoon is calling the white lead a douchebag. When there are this many jokes, the whole plot seems to be contrived, seeming to coalesce only as much as is minimally necessary to hit all the points in the hero's journey. The visual pace is very fast. With all the crazy sci-fi CGI there'd be great potential to create a brooding atmosphere or some actual suspense, but rather we're subjected to the typical explosions, rapid pans, and microsecond cuts we'd expect from an action movie. All this being said, it's hard to feel like making a critical review of this has much an effect on anything other than commiserating with others who feel the same way. The potential audience for this is so huge, and they're made sure to cover all their bases, that this will surely be a box office success and lots of viewers in airplanes, streaming, etc. Expand

A plotless mess of scarce action sequences (that made the first wickedly entertaining), weak jokes, and plotless progression, you don't know where the movie is headed until the climax slaps you in the face like a clichéd scene added late in production. Overall, Vol. 2 is a movie ridden with tropes, flaws, and clichés hiding behind the immunity it receives just for being a Marvel movie. If you want to see an entertaining space movie you should just turn to its precursor. Expand

However, this sequel has made me a fan of the franchise, and I'm looking forward to the next installment. The jokes in this movie were really funny... and I laughed many times out loud, as did nearly all the others in the theater. The storyline was very good as these Marvel movies go... but the dialogue and deeper character development is what made it great. The cameo appearances by Stallone were gems, Kurt Russell was well cast and I now have a newfound respect for actor Michael Rooker. The role of Mantis was also well done and acted.

I would never expect a movie of this genre to actually give me "the feels", but this one sure as heck DID. I was exceptionally entertained by this one, and won't be surprised if it ends up my favorite for 2017.

That is what this movie does for me. I enjoy the characters and the special effects but beyond that it is refreshing to see a new story that is not a rehash of the same stories that have been around for decades. I liked the plot without giving anything away and I think it was done very well. The big sell for this movie for me in the end though is something most miss. The music. The soundtrack is amazing. I love every song as they take me back to a different period of time. That is where it all comes together for me. Want a good movie to enjoy with some great tunes and just a good feeling about life? This is the movie you should be watching then. I can't wait for the next one. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I enjoyed the movie, but not as much as the first one. Guardians of the Galxy Vol.2 had more and Ego was much more in depth than Ronan and better in the case of the villan. The plot was not very organized, its like they wanted 2 different stories and than just put them together, making a messy, and all around not very good plot. Still good :D Expand

The jokes are funny, make no mistake, but the rate at which they come make the film feel more like a sitcom then anything else. It's honestly quite strange.

Still, it's a ton of fun. The set pieces are even crazier and more colorful than in the first movie, and most of the aforementioned character moments manage to pull on the heartstrings, even with all the jokes. It's not exactly the revelation that Vol. 1 was back in 2014, but it's infused with James Gunn's unique voice, which gives it a sense of self and confidence that so many blockbusters are missing these days.

After the amazing reception to their first outing in 2014, Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy return with a surprisingly character driven sequel.

Picking up a few months after the events of the last film, Vol.2 finds the fully formed team enjoying their status as ‘Galaxy savers’ and working from job to job in a very Firefly-esque scenario (love James Gunn but can you imagine how good a Joss Whedon Guardians movie be?). These early sequences with the team altogether is when the script is at its most fun as one-liners and jokes come thick and fast and the action moves at a neck-braking pace.

Its in the second act though that Gunn’s decision to divide the team and delve deeper into their back stories becomes a bit of a double edged sword. On one hand each of these dialogue-heavy duologue scenes is pitched perfectly and successfully builds each character. On the other hand a string of these scenes one after the other means there is a fair amount of runtime where the plot doesn’t progress at all.

This isn’t to say this approach is a negative in any way, however in the pantheon of Marvel movies we are used to having a world-ending villainous scheme pushing through the whole movie and giving the heroes a clear obstacle to overcome, there are often even cutaways to let us know what the villains are up to (Ronan’s subplot in Guardians 1, Zemo in Civil War, etc). In Guardians 2 however the key driving point that insights the main conflict of the film isn’t revealed until at least 90 minutes in (an estimate).

Now going completely plot driven isn’t necessarily a good thing with these films. Thor: The Dark World for example did zero character development and focused on some generic plot about dark elves making it one of the most forgettable entries into the Marvel franchise.

The key of course, is finding a balance between plot and character, something Guardians 1 absolutely nailed.

In any other franchise this could result in an empty, meh, experience (I’m looking at you Suicide Squad). With Guardians though, the characters are so engaging and genuinely fun to spend time with, that the pacing problems don’t really matter.

Everyone is great in this and everyone gets their own funny moments, action moments and even touching moments. Drax (Dave Bautista) often steals each scene with some fantastic one liners and Rocket (Bradley Cooper) has never been more of a badass.

Obviously Baby Groot is everything….

Gunn also does a great job of expanding on characters that were side players in part 1. Nebula (Karen Gillan) and Yondu (Michael Rooker) both get their own, satisfying arcs whilst also forcing members of the core Guardians team to take a long hard look at themselves.

At the centre of it all is Peter Quill (Chris Pratt) and his newly found father Ego (Kurt Russell). The pair share a few standout scenes together as Peter’s heritage is delved into in a big way.

After a few meandering scenes of character building the final action set piece of act three does feel a little rushed but is nonetheless spectacular to look at. To get any further into the final scenes would be to spoil things but needless to say everything that had proceeded them makes perfect sense in context.

As part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol.2 has the weight of some unreasonable expectations on its shoulders. At this point fans have spent almost a full 7 days absorbing a mountain of content across the various properties and mediums. When every new film comes out we have already known for years when the release date is, who the new characters are, who's coming back, who’s not, how many post credits stings there will be etc etc. All of this means you build a picture in your head of what the film will be and how it will play out. When things go differently to how you expect, as with Guardians 2, it takes a moment to re-adjust.

James Gunn has taken a gamble with Guardians 2, relying on the strength of his characters to see him through. Luckily for us Star Lord, Gamora, Drax, Rocket, Groot, Yondu and Nebula remain some of the most engaging, funny and human characters of the MCU. Now that we know more about them I for one can't wait to see them collide the Avengers in next year’s Avengers: Infinity War.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The first Guardians movie was quite possibly the best Marvel movie, but this is by far the worst. What happened? In one word, this movie was obnoxious. This review contains minor spoilers.

The movie is full of cringy humor that I promise you won't find appealing unless you're a small child. For example, there is a long bit about a character named "taser face". Who actually wrote that and thought it was good? They also make light of casual violence. I'm not usually one to complain about violence, but there's a cringy scene with Groot that goes on for what seems like eternity and ends with a punchline of a severed toe. Wtf?

And if you can trudge your way past the (lack of) humor, you'll find a ridiculous plot that is seriously lacking. The plot is almost entirely driven by, no kidding, a character stealing batteries...for no clear purpose, unrelated to anything else in the plot. It's like this movie was written by a 12 year old, for an audience of 10 year olds, who passed it off as a childish joke for their 8 year old sibling.

You'd have to be really dazzled by the action sequences (in which characters can survive crash landing into a planet unscathed) and visuals to not notice and move past those weak points, which were already too much to bear for me. The pace of the movie tries to painfully force character development and interaction on you. For example, we know rocket is troubled, but when did he become as obnoxious towards his close friends for seemingly no reason?

The redeeming qualities of this movie were the visuals, however. In particular, the planet where the main storyline unfolds was an artistic masterpiece, with visuals rivaling Avatar. It's sad those artists' talents had to be associated with this movie. The main cast was also good with solid performances, in particular by Michael Rooker, which helped damper horrendous writing.

The first movie had a solid plot and clear purpose, with meaningful writing and characters that had touching experiences. You could be crying within the first 10 minutes of it, but this sequel will make you want to stop watching within the first 10 minutes. Everything is just dumbed down, an uncommon miss for Marvel movies in my opinion. Another major disappointment was the soundtrack. The first movie truly was an awesome mix, but this one was weak. The best music comes out at the credits, unfortunately by then you've wasted a couple hours of your life. I'm extremely disappointed, I loved the first one, but no way in hell am I going to watch another sequel.
