Michael Rooker steals the show as Yondu... in fact, Nebula steals the show as well (Not the golden ones, the blue ones.) Their involvement with the Guardians was intriguing and ultimately ends up being something bittersweet (for us, it's **** great however) but unfortunately the writing for these characters is so great, that the Guardians themselves are overshadowed in their own movie. The pacing of this movie is off to the point that it's hard to determine where the first act starts and the second act begins... when I say the pacing, I mean the fact that it seems like it's going through the motions. Luckily, the motions in this case are still fresh because it's the second installment. This movie is funny, has action (because if it didn't it would be pretty dead plot-wise actually), and maintains the likeability of the Guardians... I was close to giving this a 7 though... But Drax and Mantis were so great together that I figured it would be stupid to give a movie where such minor characters have such great chemistry together a 7... so 8/10. Expand

It's even funnier for starters, more colorful and eclectic, but more importantly it has a more character-driven plot -- everyone is given something to do and each individual sub-plot is special in its own way.

Yondu comes out of nowhere to steal the show from everyone else. Michael Rooker does a lot with a single posture and look (see -- him standing in the brothel window) that helps to solidify his place within this Galaxy as more than just another aspect of the plot. And of course his Mary Poppins line absolutely killed.

It's pretty amazing how big this cast gets here, and how the film somehow finds a way of balancing every storyline. I think a lack of a big special effects driven middle helped out a bunch there, and made the ending battle that much more special -- for once it mattered and didn't just feel like another inevitable step on the boilerplate template.

Some of the criticism I've heard surrounding this movie, especially from what I would have considered "hardcore" fans of the original, has to do with how this one just felt like an "episode" and that it didn't matter in the grand scheme of things. I took that mean -- oh no there were character archs and personal growth and the MCU and its Infinity War wasn't furthered in any substantial way. Does anyone really care that much? These characters have solidified themselves so much more in the canon of this universe. And these people also love "Star Wars", and you know, every one of those is an episode and the second part of that is mostly character so...man I really hope that isn't the consensus on this one.

Very good sequel to the excellent first movie with great performances, awesome action sequences, cool effects and a killer soundtrack. Not quite as good as the first one, the plot is less compelling and sometimes thinly written, but still very good.

That is what this movie does for me. I enjoy the characters and the special effects but beyond that it is refreshing to see a new story that is not a rehash of the same stories that have been around for decades. I liked the plot without giving anything away and I think it was done very well. The big sell for this movie for me in the end though is something most miss. The music. The soundtrack is amazing. I love every song as they take me back to a different period of time. That is where it all comes together for me. Want a good movie to enjoy with some great tunes and just a good feeling about life? This is the movie you should be watching then. I can't wait for the next one. Expand

Fun all the way through. Just the opposite of the dc-movies, and that says a lot. Blockbuster entertainment at it's best, and in Dolby Atmos it was perfect at the cinema, and about all in the audience was laughing like crazy.

At least the characters are still fun to watch, and CG and action sequences are nice. it's not bad, but it's certainly not as good as the original.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. A bit goofy and uneven at times but very funny. The Rocket and Yondu scenes are probably the best. Drax and Mantis were were great too. Just needs some better writing and more of the characters the first one teased us with. I especially want Cosmo and Howard the Duck helping the Guardians.
Some of the new songs are pretty much "easy listening" rock. So the soundtrack is a little disappointing. Fox on a Run is probably the best. While I do get why there's not too much focus on new characters. To build more on relationships of the first films characters.
However it felt like Alice: Through the LooKing Glass which pretty much was made to work out the issues between father and sons and sisters who didn't get along. Except, yes this movie is much better than that one.

I personally believe the sequel to be superior to the original in almost every way, because it focuses more on what makes the Marvel Cinematic Universe so great. 3 dimensional characters, fascinating relationship, incredible set pieces, and tons of heart. Without giving anything, just go see this movie. If you love the first one, you will love this one. It doesn't rely a lot of the baggage created by the other films and instead focusing on telling a great story about the Guardians themselves filled with action and comedy, all wrapping up in a surprisingly emotional climax.
Marvel has done it again. Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 is a huge success and one of the best movies of the year.

The story is slightly convoluted with them trying to introduce 5 or 6 new characters while trying to keep the focus on Peter Quill and his father's arc which effectively pushes great characters like Drax, Yondu, Rocket, Groot and Gamora to the sidelines. The end of the movie is where the money is where even casual MCU fans will have a hard time not staying invested in the film. Comedy is good but it also feels forced at times as its used to cover an underwhelming and painfully convenient plot. Still, good movie overall but it just could have been better. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. During this third act, what Ego does shouldn't come as a surprise to the audience. This is fine since Ego's social awkward and tragic delegate, Mantis, helps Drax and the rest of the Guardians, forced out my Gamora, to spell out trouble early on in this Act. The real of Ego's plan is very premeditated than definitive here. When Peter finds the tragic truth from Ego and what he is up to, he is at an end pass with his blood father and his Guardians family. With funny father and son moments throughout the film, when it comes to the third act, there isn't much breathing room here. During the Ego's plan reveal, it comes as a more dramatic turn and feels like a box checked for a huge third act battle. Emotions fly high when Nebula reveals, to Gamora, the pain she was put through and when Yondu finally reveals his regrets to Peter and the rest of the team. After learning what Ego's up to, Peter finally snaps out of this "Father and Son" trance. He finally realizes what’s more important in his life. Yes, those father and son moments pull at your heart string, but they are so artificial, your diet soda would be laughing at you. During the father and son catch scene, Ego makes Peter create an artifice ball of light to through. That ball of light symbolizes a fake moment to them that isn't real at all. Once Peter realizes this, it is too late for him and the rest of the Guardians to stop Ego and his master plan.

Welcome to the Guardians of the "Freaking" Galaxy In conclusion of this film, outside of some small minor flaws and many subplots that slows down the 2nd Act of the film, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 is one of the most exciting, audacious, joyful and heartfelt film in the MCU today. Since the first film, we grow attached to these characters while on an emotional thrill ride from the first scene to the last. The importance of family and the connection it has towards each member and connections to humanity is present throughout the film. From a cybernetic raccoon, alien assassins, a one phrase talking sentient creature, a destroyer or star lords, in our souls lies an empirical yearning to see what happens to them throughout this film. During the film, Peter Quill, Gamora and Nebula, deal with their father issues, both bent on their own agendas, to see what is more important and is right in front of them, family. Outside of the stories and plots themselves, there are many Marvel Easter Eggs, found in all MCU movies, crammed into this film. Ranging from important characters featured throughout the whole Marvel comic and film universe with possibilities in the MCU down the line to familiar locations with aliens only hard-core Marvel comic audiences will fully appreciate and understand. This sequel features a lot on emotions and colorful imagery to recapture the sincere heart and crackling energy of the first film. This film will tie us movie goers and MCU fan's until the next major MCU event, namely, the Guardians' appearance in the Avengers: Infinity War, rather than standalone next installment of the Guardians story. Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 2 will satisfy every MCU fan or fan of action, adventure and superhero film and will meet that audiences exceptions. ***Attention, Don't leave until the end credits concluded for more Guardians and Marvel Cinematic Universe fun.

The leads stay true and do a great job, the writing and chemistry is solid, CG is great too. However, the plot is too dragged out with some weird tonal shifts, the music and comedy isn't as well integrated as the first film, and although it attempts to take risks, the film, like so many MCU movies, fails to have many stakes (I won't give the big risk away though). Overall, the film is okay, but wanes in comparison to the first as it hits the notes it needs to, but doesn't do much more than that. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. If you look at Gaurdians 1, which is a solid 9 if not 10 movie. Gaurdians 2 is almost that, but like... It's like if you asked for pancakes and got waffles. You still love waffles but you're upset you didn't get pancakes. The humour was perfectly in sync with the series so far and I am more than happy with that. There are a lot of times where I see Drax becoming my spirit animal. The villain, well, I saw it coming from a mile away. It explains a lot about how Star Lord survives the 1st movie I guess and where his nickname came from. I do like the concept of the villain however, taking down a god is a huuuuge deal. However now Star Lord has no plot armour for the third film. Maybe. Great effects, rocket racoon is an **** groot is cute. 8/10 would watch again on netflix. Expand

However, since then, Marvel films have gotten progressively more and more generic with the marks from the assembly line obstructing every image of the film. Last year's Captain America: Civil War was the first sign of trouble at Marvel studio with a made-by-committee checklist type of film that just fell flat. Doctor Strange, however, took it a step further and was a film made by both committee and focus group. The results were absolutely alarming. As such, there was no way I was rushing out to see Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2. Part of it was fear that the Guardians would be ruined as well, but a lot of it was low expectations as demanded by being so underwhelmed by Marvel and the superhero genre as a whole in 2016. It seemed as though superhero movies were no longer something I could enjoy like everybody else with jokes I did not find funny and plots that were hardly worth my time. Fortunately, Guardians Vol. 2 somewhat changed that.

I say somewhat because this film is still littered with issues. The original was defined by its raw and unexpected parent-driven emotion, its sense of family, constant jokes, interesting worlds and planets, music from the 80s, and more. This film has all of that, but slightly worse. It lacks the originality and inspiration found in the original on these fronts, even while possessing the most inspiration and daring found in the Marvel Cinematic Universe right now. This film tosses in neon (akin to Drive or other neon-lit favorites) and barren landscapes (akin to Mad Max: Fury Road) to the mix after the moviegoer surveys received by Marvel advised them to include both due to how "in" both were at the moment. Blended with the rehashing and fan service from the original, the film certainly feels like a film that was made to be pleasing, but not challenging or unique. It is a conveyor belt film like Marvel's other recent output, but it is by way of director James Gunn. With a light hearted energy where the film knows how stupid it all is, the film somehow sticks the landing and is like a slightly shinier and more precisely put together piece from that very same conveyor belt.

Yet, though it sticks the landing, the film's writing does still often leave a lot to be desired. One of the most egregious missteps comes in the very beginning. Dropping us into a situation where the Guardians face off with some monster to protect batteries at the behest of a race of people known as the Sovereign people, the film then introduces us to the high priestess of those people, Ayesha (Elizabeth Debicki). With her first words being forced exposition about who the Sovereign people are even though the Guardians should already know that, the film not just tips its hand that these people will keep popping up, but it is a line of dialogue that adds nothing to the story and never comes into play in any meaningful way. They hired the Guardians to defend this battery and then encounter them throughout the film. Leave it at that. There is no defined need to explain who they are because it is nothing but unneeded exposition and in-your-face foreshadowing.

The film's in-your-face foreshadow is only foreshadowed by this awful moment of exposition, however. Once introduced to Peter's (Chris Pratt) father, Ego (Kurt Russell), we are bombarded by Gamora (Zoe Saldana) immediately warning Peter that he may not be all good. After wanting him to find his father, she immediately jumps past the honeymoon period and alerts the audience that there is more to Ego than may immediately meet the eye. Through not-so-subtle repeated mentions of secrets held by Ego and some mystery regarding whether or not he is everything he claims to be, the film continuously hints at a big twist and reveal that is forthcoming. By the time it arrives, Gunn plays it as if it were a twist even if it had been spelled out and fully outlined by the time it is finally revealed. Instead of a shock, it becomes a situation where the audience just waits for Peter and the Guardians to finally wake up and realize that Ego is not good. Though the reveal is quite nice with the mountain of bodies, the film's shock and surprise reveal about who the true antagonist is about as secretive and subtle as James Gunn coming out and saying that Ego is bad at the very beginning of the movie. Naming him Ego is also a major clue here, particularly with his cliche demands of the world.

This cliched demand to destroy the world and make it in his own image is one of the film's many cliches that really do hold it back, as is often the case with superhero films, particularly Marvel ones. Though handed a compelling villain, the film largely does not take advantage of him and instead just turns him into another "destroy the world" villain, which is a shame. As is often the case, the film also has a "love conquers all" message that kills him.

Temos também mr blue sky,my sweet lord, brandy you´re a fine girls entre outras ótimas faixas. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. GoG Vol.2 is a CHILD PARTY movie. The main characters are formed for: Drax, as the clown of the party - he makes jokes with everything (he left to be the Destroyer to become "the joker"); the bday boy - the teenager mind Starlord, a spoiled adult guy; the cute baby that everyone looks and thinks (like Mantis) "he is so cute" - and just it; the father of the party - Yondu (the only one you respect in this mess); the impulsive and stressed friend - Rocket; the love interest - Gamora and etc.
It's a pitty that the most interesting and emotional parts belongs to Yondu, Rocket and Nebula (secondary characters). The best action scenes comes from Yondu and Rocket. Baby Groot was just a marketing ploy. Drax as Mantis are almost unuseful (I suppose he lost his intelligence after touching the Space Gem in Vol. 1. I love to see Gamora in the screen, 'kuz she looks like badass... she has presence, but they didn't give her the oportunity to show it in the movie...
And about the Sovereigns... oh, my gosh... When I watched the trailers, I expected Ayesha would be a strong, serious and imponent char., but Marvel put her and the others Sovereigns in embarrassing and comic situations which you can't take them seriously and feel some urgency from them. And also the actors adopted a grotesque playing to do their roles. Stallone has few and OK moments, and I hated his costume (like Bryan Singer style).

The genuine heart and humor that made the first one so refreshing has been replaced with weirdly casual violence, rampant cruelty, flippant misogyny, and off-putting "jokes." This is a movie for teenage boys who can't tell the difference between glib and glitz, between innocence and immaturity. The overbearing "family friendly" corporate sheen imposed on top of the cultural rot (Aw, adorable baby tree that you can purchase for $9.99!!!) just makes he whole enterprise feel even more cynical and depressing. Watching this movie, I felt like I was at one of those high-pressure sales pitches where suckers get promised free vacations but end up being sold worthless time-shares in the swamps of Florida. I might be willing to forgive this films' soulless nature if it was at least entertaining and funny, but it's not. The jokes land with a cringe-inducing thud as the cast alternates between desperation and obvious boredom. The story is... honestly, not sure because I barely remember it. Let's just say it's quite an achievement for a plot to be both monotonous and nonsensical. Aesthetically, this is by far the best looking Disney-Marvel film to date, which isn't saying much. The special effects are cartoony but still impressive, and the cinematography transcends the normal network-TV blandness that has became a hallmark of the MCU. Still, I would have traded the improved production values for a memorable story or at least one or two solid jokes. Save your time and spend the 2.5 hours listening to a classic rock radio station while staring at a lava lamp. Expand

It has the usual great things, like good jokes, great action and some decent drama. However, this one has a few flaws. First off, some of the jokes don't land very well. They run with a few too long, ruining an otherwise hilarious streak the film creates for itself. Secondly, the Plot is all over the Place for a while, which is a shame because the main plot is the most interesting thing by far. Lastly, I will say that I don't know where they will go from here. I won't spoil, but they may have blew their load with this one plot wise.

Other than those few flaws though, Guardians is another good entry into the MCU. Not my favorite by any means, but one I am definitely happy I saw.

First off let me explain that I am not one to obsess about Marvel films (as I feel the DCEU should get a fair shot), but Guardians of the Galaxy has always been an exception. The first film expertly combined the right elements of humor and heart that added up to an all right joy ride. In many respects this film is not very different. You can expect to see the same goofy, outlandish, yet hilarious humor from the first movie in this one. The humor is especially attributed to Baby Groot, which adds plenty of interesting dynamics to the group. The humor may not feel as fresh however, as it is very similar to the first film in this regard. The thing that puts this film above the last one is its ability to include even more heart and emotional depth. Volume 2 expands on the developments of previous characters and works to give depth and multiple dimensions to some anti-heroes not explored in the first film (ex. Gamora and Gandor). Overall, if you were a fan of the first film you should enjoy this film. Even as a person who has not read the comics nor is obsessed with any superhero movie, I found a lot to enjoy with this movie. Worth the watch (or two)! Expand

However, this sequel has made me a fan of the franchise, and I'm looking forward to the next installment. The jokes in this movie were really funny... and I laughed many times out loud, as did nearly all the others in the theater. The storyline was very good as these Marvel movies go... but the dialogue and deeper character development is what made it great. The cameo appearances by Stallone were gems, Kurt Russell was well cast and I now have a newfound respect for actor Michael Rooker. The role of Mantis was also well done and acted.

I would never expect a movie of this genre to actually give me "the feels", but this one sure as heck DID. I was exceptionally entertained by this one, and won't be surprised if it ends up my favorite for 2017.

Lots of small detail and large variety of creatures, technology, and worlds. It's kind of got it all; space battles, cyborgs, pirates, fantasy jungle, magic, etc. Onto the plot. On some level it is commendable that they bring all these different genres together, at the same time, I realize that it can help make a movie more linear when it sticks to a premise, even if it limits the scope of possibility. For a while, it's unclear what the premise is here. There's a motley crew traveling through space, and when one of them impulsively steals some piece of technology, they find themselves facing a military onslaught. This predicament seems to propel much of the plot for the movie's first half. It rather abruptly shifts focus to the white male lead battling his father, fittingly, for the sake of the galaxy/universe or whatever. It seems like this would be a broad enough plotline to be compelling, but it feels a bit artibitrary. First of all, the whole thing is solely based around two particular characters. The battle is not literally constrained to two individuals, but metaphorically and in terms of dialog, it's clear that the whole thing revolves around two people. Secondly, there is no clear right vs. wrong in the leadup to the final battle. This isn't a shortcoming in and of itsef, but it does make the implied moral of the story unconvincing. To be more specific (spoiler): The dilemma ("final boss", if you will) is that the god-dad wants to harnass his son's power to spread grey goo on every planet. However, in the millions of years since spawning in space as a floating brain (I'm not kidding), the dad's done some pretty nasty **** like killing a bunch of kids after failed breeding experiments, and worst of all, giving our progragonist's mom cancer. All this is too much for our "hero", so he says **** it and gets everyone to team up to kill his dad. It can't just me be who thinks a singularity would be kind of cool. I found myself basically rooting against them at the end. Onto the dialog, which is definitely one of more notable parts of this series. It's relentless comedy, rapid banter, and rather static characters with little "in jokes" that develop over time. It's clear that the screenwriters intended this to be enjoyed by a 'broad' audience. Winning the 'least intellectual' award is Groot the baby. His catchphrase is a forced meme, but worst of all it doesn't even make any sense. C3PO translates R2D2's beeps because they're robots. Cartman understands Kenny because ... he has a strong accent? But what kind of logic is it where the racoon can translate the singular phrase "i am groot" to a full language based on intonation? It's nonsensical, and really just comedic. More generally, though, the dialog here tries to be edgy in a way that is somewhat unconventional, similar to Deadpool or Rick and Morty perhaps. It's also frustratingly omnipresent. They're flying away from dozens of hostile ships, through a asteroid field, and the racoon is calling the white lead a douchebag. When there are this many jokes, the whole plot seems to be contrived, seeming to coalesce only as much as is minimally necessary to hit all the points in the hero's journey. The visual pace is very fast. With all the crazy sci-fi CGI there'd be great potential to create a brooding atmosphere or some actual suspense, but rather we're subjected to the typical explosions, rapid pans, and microsecond cuts we'd expect from an action movie. All this being said, it's hard to feel like making a critical review of this has much an effect on anything other than commiserating with others who feel the same way. The potential audience for this is so huge, and they're made sure to cover all their bases, that this will surely be a box office success and lots of viewers in airplanes, streaming, etc. Expand

Ok, maybe it's a bit much nibbling at few jokes, but this little bunch of them kinda ruins atmosphere. The film generally is cliche and predictable. Especially when it comes to fights. At the same time heroes, though fulfilled with problems (and that's depreciate their problems), are charmy. So, it's ok. But audience expected something more.

I don't know if it's just me, but I think that the traditional, "Marvel Movie Formula" containing a mix of humor, action, drama, and predictable story lines is getting way out of hand. Let me show you what I mean. In this movie, it had WAAAAAY too much humor. To the point where I felt like it belonged to an SNL skit. A parody. I don't know about you, but I like my superhero movies to be a little bit on the serious side, maybe even borderline dark. I like my superhero movies to be ironically believable, if translated into the real world. But that's just me. That's one of my bases for judging this movie. The soundtrack is great, but I really do think that the first had the better one. That's the trouble with sequels, it's difficult to surpass the hype of the first (if it was a good movie). The acting is great, although I still do think that Dave Bautista's character is a little too overacted, and a little stiff, to be honest. I don't know if that's how Drax really is or maybe it's just the acting; but even if it's the former, it's still a little too off for me. Cinematography wise, it's good. It's a Marvel film so expect a ton of amazing visuals and CGI. Overall, I gave this movie a 7/10 because the movie is good! And anyone who watches this movie will probably tell you it's great! But it's just that the jokes were a little too often this time. I don't like that. And that's the major reason why I'm giving this a 7. Other than that, it's a solid Marvel film that's maybe on the list of the ones that are not too memorable. Expand

In 2014, the Marvel Studios original came out of obscurity to set box office records, introducing fans to a cast of heroes who aren't exactly your typical superheroes. Combining amazing special effects and comedy, the film quickly gained a cult following and critical acclaim, but can they defeat the biggest enemy of all, the curse of the sequel? The Guardians are back doing what they do best, with a new enemy on their tail, when they crash land on an uninhabited planet. Their rescuer comes in a form of a man who seems too good to be true, is he really there to help them or does he have something else in mind? The story in volume two is not as good as the first one, that was to be expected, but luckily it isn't far off. The characters are the same and this time they know each other a whole lot better, meaning the chemistry is better, the humor comes more quickly, and the magic is still there. Once again Chris Pratt is outstanding, it's still hard to believe he went from the annoying jock on Everwood to this charismatic megastar. The rest of the cast is also on it's game and we learn much more about the characters then we did in the first film. While not being as strong story wise, this film certainly hits closer to home, and everything is amped up from the special effects to the humor and even the soundtrack. I love these films and I hope there are a lot more of them, however I'd be remiss in not sharing my thought that something this good, especially with how the story evolves in the second film, is better suited for a weekly TV series than at most a handful of feature films. The Bottom Line, if you liked the first one, you'll love the second one. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The one true complaint that can be said about this film is that it isn't quite as good as the fantastic first film. I, personally say that it's about equal when all things are considered. It's not quite as funny, but the character development means that you become invested in all of the characters more than at the end of the first film. The soundtrack is amazing as ever. It's slightly cliché in parts, but the villain is actually developed and Kurt Russell's performance solidifies him as one of the far better villains that the Marvel heroes have faced. In my opinion, the third best villain Marvel has had. His plan made sense to me and honestly I really rooted against him. The performances are excellent and it's an enjoyable film. Expand

I give it a slightly better-than-average score because Chris Pratt is a genuinely likable and charismatic lead, but the rest is, not BAD, but nothing you'll remember by the time you're in your car driving home.

Like all the other comic book movies, the visuals are very slick and there are some amusing quips and inventive set-pieces, but that's the entire appeal right there. The characters all have the gravitas of moody 14-year-olds wrestling with their hormones, there's absolutely zero sense of real drama or tension or emotionally engaging conflict (Kurt Russell does his best but his villain winds up being just another generic Cosmic Blob of Evil that wants to eat the universe... like basically every other Marvel movie), and to the extent there are twists or surprises you'll see them coming from a mile away.

But hey, why even bother criticizing a piece of extruded corporate product like this. Disney knows their markets well, so turn off your brain, enjoy the shiny flashing lights, and go tell people it was "good" because it made you laugh a couple times and wasn't egregiously awful and what more could anyone possibly ask of a summer blockbuster?

Loved it. It actually surprised excessively that I may have to go back to the theaters to watch what other things I've missed. To be honest the star of the show for me was Drax and Groot, but seeing Nebula and Gamora and their sibling rivalry (and the truth to that) was also interesting. I don't know why for the life of me I was thinking of Judge Dredd when I saw Stallone in the outfit (when clearly that's the wrong comic). Yondu blew me away...and left me in tears. And Peter...boy...the dude had me rolling on that one scene where he clashed with Ego.

I was concerned, going in, that Gunn couldn't possibly bring the same level of heart, the same exuberantly colorful visuals, and the same character moments that made the first film such a lightning-in-a-bottle moment. I'm please report my fears were utterly unfounded. Volume Two is entirely satisfying on all fronts, and in fact, it's better than the original film on most fronts. Where sequels sometimes suffer from bloat, this movie felt like MORE without feeling like an unintelligible storm of narrative. Every character--from Yondu to Rocket, Mantis to Nebula--gets standout moments, genuine emotional touchpoints that bring us closer to them and their struggles. The Guardians as a franchise-within-a-franchise remains a visual treat, dynamic and free-spirited, and as one reviewer put it (allow me to paraphrase), they're more of a team than the Avengers have ever managed to be. I seriously cannot find fault with anything in this film: if you loved, really loved, the first GOTG, you're going to appreciate Volume Two immensely. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. It is vital when giving **** to DC films (cause they have been rubbish) that one also apply the same standard to any Marvel endeavors. When we do apply the same standards, it is rather sad that Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 2 is a rubbish mediocre plotless mess that tarnishes the brilliance of the first one. In a few months time, the wool will be pulled from the fanboys eyes and they will realise they have seen a dud. The biggest problem with this film is that it is overly generic and lacking any real plot. 1) Let me tell you that this film doesn't really have a plot until maybe end of the middle section. The film is so poor that it often signposts what the characters are going to do next, becasue they literally have nothing driving the plot. 2) Action is rubbish in this film. The film literally has the worst generic action scenes with Drax the Destroyer having all his action scenes in the beginning. If you thought the generic battle scenes in Suicide Squad was bad, then Vol 2 tops that by having spaceships and energy tentacles as the main threat - honestly so fricking boring. 3) The jokes are pretty hit and miss. Whereas in the first one they had all these clever well crafted jokes, Vol 2 feels like something Amy Schumer stole. The film is so unfunny that the characters do most of the laughing for you. The film force feeds you a joke every two minutes expecting that what you paid for, except, most of it is dry and you would need to have a brain of a 9 year old to enjoy it.
4) Dialogue is pretty much signposting. Characters will randomly tell you their backstory or what they feel at different points with little context. Whats worse is that it adds literally nothing to their characters (that we didn't know before). For example, *SPOILER* the main villain tells StarLord he put cancer in his mum for no reason whatsoever, all to drive that vengenance element. 5) The music is average in Vol.2 and like Suicide Squad, they just put a random track every 5 minutes like an overdrawn music video. Most of the music was forgettable as well. 6) The themes of the film are poorly set up. I knew there was going to be a father-son relationship and was looking forward to it. However, all of these themes are jammed in at the end and there is little reason why anyone should care because they never set it up properly. 7) The characterizations of the heroes are inconsistent. In one scene where Gamora falls off, StarLord just stands there and watches her fall despite the fact she is his lover and he had those rocket shoes. Gunn deliberately did that so that Nebula can save her (to fufill that sister arc). This is poor writing and just makes all the thing set up redundant. The good things with the film is the cinematography and acting. Colours are vibrant, and the actors are working to their best of their script. However, this doesn't detract the mediocrity of everything else wrong with this film. If you like seeing a long Marvel commerical, then Guardians of the Galaxy vol 2 will be your bread and butter. However, this is by far one of the most boring and poorly written film thus far this year.

The main story is about Star-lord and his father and it is OK. There are several sub-plots and they are decent but one of them was really pointless and mostly annoying except maybe as a reason to introduce another character and only as a hint in the end credits.
The visuals are great. The characters are what they were in the first and the new characters are interesting.

Worth a watch if you liked the first but better on Blu-ray or DVD.

No movie like this should ever under any circumstances be over two hours, but that's the idiotic trend none of the sheep are taking a good look at.

Both the voices of Vin Diesel and Bradley Cooper are unrecognizable as they are pitched, not to mention Groot only says one line. Almost anyone could do these voices yet they are billed as stars, as is the practice with all animated flicks. Stupidly. The marketing morons believe the marquee value draws business, but not a single extra ticket is sold because of any star voices and actually all it does is take the audience out of the story knowing who's behind the cartoons.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I liked Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 1 much more than Vol. 2. I would describe Vol. 2 as Star Trek 5 meets Spaceballs meets National Lampoons Vacation meets Tron: Legacy meets Dr. Phil. I just didn't like the whole search for Peter's father who turned out to be a God, and then that made Peter a God...sigh. I would have much rather dealt with building the bridgework to eventually toppling Thanos. I will be much more cautious about spending my hard earned money to watch Vol. 3, I will probably wait for it to get to the dollar theater. I hate to say that because I love the characters so much, and I was glad to see them again, but I thought there was too much anxiety, interpersonal turmoil and also Drax was too goofy and chummy. I gave it a 7 out of 10, which is probably being a little nice. Expand

Here's my review of the first one. Nothing has changed, so why waste my time being original when the filmmakers didn't.
The latest Marvel mashup brings a ragtag gang of unusual characters together to save the universe. This opens things up for irreverent humor, which isn’t always is seldom that funny. Action is inevitable, but most of it is fast & noisy without standing out. There’s also lots to look at, including dozens of fun creatures and some cool design. (New this time: the middle bogs way down with too much dull drama and little Groot is just precious.) The playful tone and unusual individuals make it entertaining, but the underlying lack of originality keeps it from soaring.
I gave the original 3 stars, but I'm only doing 1.5 for this one (half as many stars for a half-assed movie). NOTE: To make sure you watch all the credits, hey've spread out the teaser jokes throughout them.

The amazing visuals (Like the 1980's took LSD and threw up rainbows) combined with great sound design make it a feast for the senses. Unlike some of the more story centered and poignant Marvel Films ie. Captain America Civil War, Guardians is more about the characters, the ride, and having big fun adventures in space. It does have it's emotional moments, hitting almost as hard as the first film, but in the end James Gunn has lovingly crafted a fun comic book movie. Instead James Gunn decides to build upon the views emotion by diving deeper into each of the characters past and present emotions. The audience gets to find out what makes each character tick. Whether it is Peter Quill and his Father issues or Nebula and Gamora having sister issues or even probably one of the more emotional at least for me was Rocket and Yondu bond that is created with this film. Usually in sequels directors like to go bolder with their action and make even bigger explosions, but with this the action takes a slight backseat compared to great dialogue. Don't get me wrong the action is great all of around from the opening sequence to the end the action was fantastic, but it's the dialogue from each character that makes me feel their pain throughout the whole movie. Not only is the dialogue and action fantastic in the movie but also the mixtape which James Gunn created is fantastic as well. Each song fit so well into each scene, and I find me self going back to replay all the songs because it is so catchy. James Gunn use of color also makes this film beautiful with different variations of color. Some people feel that Marvel films are ugly when they discuss color but this film can have no argument. The use of color on each of the planets and especially the last scene blew me away. Now some spoilers here the creation of Ego the living planet was awesome the detail that was given to that planet had me blown away. Now even more spoilers that I want to talk about quickly, one of them being the Sovereign people. I thought they were a nice touch to move the plot along at times. I liked who they were used and the technology that they had to try and defeat the Guardians. I believe that they will have a much bigger role in Vol 3 no doubt. Ego, Peters fathers was probably one of the best villains in the MCU because he was actually a real human being, which people can relate to rather than a monster but also because he had an emotional story with Peter. Kurt Russles performance was out of this world as always. The only negative I can say which really isn't a negative at all was the humor. At one or two times during the film I found myself saying "eh I wish they didn't put that joke I never there" but I wouldn't care because I still laughed at it so really I do t even consider that a big negative but it was something to say. So would I reccomend this movie? Absolutely, for me personal I know this is a bold statement but this is my favorite Marvel Movie right now. When comparing this to the first one I have a hard time picking a favorite because I feel like the information you learn from the second one elevates the first movie. I won't spoiler any of that here it's better to experience on your own but, I truly had a fun time with this movie it's my favorite and I will say as of now it is better than the first. The way the use family and emotion to capture the character and make views relate to each character is fantastic. And probably one of my favorite things about this movie was that James Gunn had freedom to do whatever he wants, this movie had no connections to movie the whole MCU story closer to Thanos and I was 100% fine with that.I would give this film 10/10 Expand
