I actually registered on this site just to warn people to save their time with this one.
The fact it has such critical acclaim is baffling. Honestly I hate bashing an artists work but this time I'll make the exception due to complete lack ofI actually registered on this site just to warn people to save their time with this one.

The "twist" is so predictable that you'll figure it out within the first five minutes. In fact, it's so obvious and poorly hid that I genuinely was expecting it to be a red herring. I kept waiting for a better reveal that sadly never came. The cast are all fine, as is the cinematography and use of sound but my GOD the feeling of wasted time here is astounding.… Expand

I love horror movies and I loved THE FOLLOWING and BABADOOK was pretty good also but I hated this movie. It doesn't deserve the high ratings that it is receiving from critics or users. It is weak on story and i figured it out pretty quicklyI love horror movies and I loved THE FOLLOWING and BABADOOK was pretty good also but I hated this movie. It is weak on story and i figured it out pretty quickly about half way threw the film what was going on, and the ending was very cheesy with the three main characters waving at the end. I understood what was going on but i just felt like i was robbed of the hour and a half that I spent watching this movie. Please don't waste your time.… Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The times have changed and viewers now prefer the cleaner horror movies as compared to slashers and bloody movies from 80's and 90's. What I call them is 'Contemporary Horror' where editing and cinematography takes the responsibility to keep it chilly instead of make up and special effects.

Goodnight Mommy, is such of a movie which depicts power of it's script and cleaner direction. With minimal characters and only one major location, Goodnight Mommy resembles to recent hollywood release Ex-Machina. Technically movie is brilliant, or atleast first half of it. Although it's very much clear even from the first encounter of mother and sons that One of them is not real. Script showed a damaging weakness there when it could not hide the sheer suspense which was the backbone of the movie. And from there it was all in the open that script is based on the premise of Korean Horror ' A Tale of Two Sister' which was unsuccessfully made in hollywood as 'The Uninvited'.

Despite of the weaker story, movie still managed to keep one focus his mind untill the big change comes and boy knots his mother down. From there now it turned from a 'Contemporary Horror' to 'Contemporary Torture' movie and by torture I mean torturing the viewers. There literally is not purpose to watch the movie from there an on. There is no story and no character strength left.

I mean, cmon, anyone with half a brain and any knowledge of films made the past 15 years can see that 'mindblowing twist' coming a mile away. sure. its techincally well made, but if the pay-off isnt there, its a poor film. also scenes dragged on for far too long, countless scenes in the dark where one can't see anything, and loads of confusing extra bits that should have been edited out.… Expand

Hitchcock’s The Birds by keeping reality at bay with too many contrivances and little explanation.
The “twist” is obvious ten minutes into this stale suspense strudel for anyone who looks and listens.
And there’s no wit and no suspense and you could care less what happens to these
characters which makes for a very slow ninety minutes of irritation.
Another meager Twilight Zone episode with style much overrated.… Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Imagine at the start of The 6th Sense you saw someone shoot Bruce Willis, and then the rest of the movie was filmed as though you didn't see him get shot: this is Goodnight Mommy.

As shot, there is no twist in this film. In the opening sequence one of the twins is clearly shown to have drowned, and then you get an hour of nothing happening while the filmmakers seem to have forgotten that they already told you one of the boys is dead.

When something finally does happen, it is fairly tame, and then over quickly. The audience is never really given the chance to wallow in apprehension and uncertainty. Anyone calling this movie "torture porn" should go watch The Loved Ones, Wolf Creek, Inside, High Tension...

The only thing I knew about this movie ahead of time was its high approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes. But even if I had skipped the first 5 minutes, the movie was still just boring.… Expand

I'm sorry this movie is grossly over-rated. I found it to be boring for the first 20-30mins, inexplicable the next 20-30 mins and the last 20-30 mins were graphically horrific and sadistic. There's not much dialogue, music or context here and what could have easily been resolved earlier on in the film is on brought out in the very last moments of the film. I am a fan of this genre, and don't mind gore, but children & gore don't mix well with me. Additionally, movies that give children adult skills -- is too contrived and unbelievable.… Expand

If you like this movie there is something seriously wrong with you. This film exists as a sign of societal and moral decay and nothing more. One of the most repulsive, disgusting, cruel, and vile films I've ever seen, all for a pitifullyIf you like this movie there is something seriously wrong with you. This film exists as a sign of societal and moral decay and nothing more. One of the most repulsive, disgusting, cruel, and vile films I've ever seen, all for a pitifully uncreative "twist" that I predicted about 20 minutes into the movie. Skip it if you don't like surprise extended scenes of realistic and brutal torture. This film has made me resolve to check all negative reviews of horror movies in the future for warnings of gratuitous torture scenes, as this movie is the last place I expected to see that. The filmmakers should be charged for child abuse for having children act in these scenes. Please chip in for the sake of humanity and continue warning viewers of these atrocities in your reviews, folks. This world is going to the dogs. It's a fight for the sickest, saddest, most morally lazy part of your brain and films like this are winning. Life's horrible enough without secondhand trauma from disturbed minds.

This movie made Hateful Eight look like a birthday party. Where are the critics crying about misogyny this time? I guess you get a free pass when it's foreign or "artsy" and it makes you look cool to your hipster coven to like it. Disgusting.… Expand

But if you were expecting a payoff by the end you will be sorely disappointed. The second half is a sharp downturn into POINTLESS torture porn... It's edgy to be edgy with nothing more than desperately trying to "shock" you into remembering this poorly written movie. Try "The eyes of my mother".… Expand
