Messy screenplay. Story holes and very little coherence. A bovine exercise of cgi.

This is the worst movie and the worst Godzilla I have seen in a long time.

Cant remember what is worse than this cringefest. Worst dialogs like it was written for 6 year olds, plot is utterly garbage and nothing in this movie makes any sense. No action of any character is believable or understandable. It's really like a 6 year old wrote the script just to glue together the special effects they wanted! You dont care about the action cause it's emotionless. Godzilla doesnt evolve or endure like he is in animes or other movies. You never feel with him cause he is just there and smashes stuff. There is no emotional connection to his doings or his story ever. Special Effects are meh.
We endured GoT Season 8, Aquaman, Ghostbuster 2016 and others but this movie goes straight to the top place of worst movie.
The beginning is also so unprofessional and I dont know how anyone whit a little bit of knowledge in cinematography could go with that.
Again dialogs in this movie have no substance and you never care what someone says cause it doesnt suit to any situation or support anything to make you believe anything!
Stay away from this movie and save your money.

This movie stands out with the special effects but it totally fails with the script.
Again, like its predecessor, the history of the people is longer than that of the titans,

Godzilla: King of the Monsters is perhaps one of the best movies of the year. The action sequences are very riveting and the battle scenes between the various gigantic monsters make it well worth the price of admission.

While not being a great movie, it is still widely entertaining. Supported by great CGI effects, good acting performances, a decent (although cliché and stupid) story and a good soundtrack, it definitely succeeded at doing what it was supposed to.

Was it what I hoped for? Sure! Was it more? Unfortunately not but with that being said Godzilla: King of the Monsters was a good film. It has its narrative faults and obvious character faults but the special effects, fight scenes, shots and overall tone are very good. I really enjoyed Millie Bobby Brown, Kyle Chandler, Ken Watanabe, Sally Hawkins, Charles Dance and Vera Farmiga though the problem with this film to me was that it introduced too many new characters, most of which are irrelevant to the story and end up taking away time from an already weak central plot involving The Russells, Monarch and Charles Dance's eco-terrorist group. On top of that, although I consider this a minor complaint because in the end it served a purpose but I also felt overwhelmed by all the monsters in this movie when I feel like they should have just stuck the conflict between Godzilla, Rodan, Mothra, and Ghidora (whose a more convincing villian than Charles Dance's character unfortunately) because it overstuffs the plot but at the end I can see why it served a purpose. Still, I found King of the Monsters to be a good film. Unfortunately it suffers a bit from sequelitis as its nowhere near as good as the 2014 Godzilla, which gets undeserved flack from people whod rather watch a 3 hour Michael Bay Transformers porn than watch a slow burning, intensely paced monster movie similar to Jaws or the original Godzilla from the 50s. I'm still excited for Godzilla v Kong and further Monsterverse entries just as long as they pump the brakes now while trying to build these monsters and characters trying not to get lost in the shuffle. Kudos,Warner Bros. You made me feel feelings in a movie (featuring weird-ass creatures) that isn’t a Pixar movie. But then again, the whole world cried at the death of a tinman in a bloated Superhero Movie. Eh,well…

Godzilla King Of The Monsters. Or as I’d like to call it “SHELVE OUT YOUR $50 AND SEE THIS THING IN THE BIGGEST IMAX SCREEN YOU COULD FIND”. This movie doesn’t even need a review, since there are simple things to talk about (not in a “I liked this movie because...Because!” sort of way),but who cares,I’m doing this for a passion,so let’s do this.
For starters, this the most obnoxious, cacophonic, absurd and flat-out bizarre thing I’ve seen at the movie theater so far this year. And for that reason,I love it so much. Writer/Director Michael Dougherty (writer of X2:X-Men United) and Zach Shields understand that this is such stupid material to be taken seriously in a movie of this caliber,so what they do with the Script is you may as well care about the next gargantuan Monster Battle (and not the human aspect) and call it a day,so that you can safely wait for the next round against King Kong next year.
That isn’t to say that the human aspect is boring and/or annoying. Sure, there’s one huge flaw with it,but overall, they were trying to make you feel something for them, even if there’s a Villain reminiscent of the ole’ Saturday Morning Cartoon fever. Once again,Ken Watanabe makes the exposition dump interesting to hear (whether it’s how many monsters there are in this Universe or Godzilla’s abilities etc.),Thomas Middleditch felt like he was in a different movie and there’s a part in here that, just like the rest of the 2hr12’ runtime, feels like what Jurassic World Fallen Kingdom miserably failed to accomplish (the “are you with this creature or do you wanna terminate the creature?” clichè) since Universal doesn’t know how to make movies anymore. (Pets 2 looks so bright, you guys)
As for the Monster Action, yes,it is beautiful and just what I expected: giant Monsters (full of gorgeous CG Splooj) wrecking buildings while brawling it out featuring an aesthetic so artistic, you may as well compare several shots to a painting by Leonardo Da Vinci or Michelangelo. The Monsters can also be funny at times, mostly King Ghidorah (the main monster baddie),who has a severe problem with his other 2 heads,apparently...
Suprisingly,it’s also one of the most transcending IMAX 3D experiences of all time. It’s up there with Avatar and Spider-Man Into The Spider-Verse.
This is also a huge breath of air not only for all the movies that aren’t John Wick or Booksmart playing in theaters right now,but also for a Personal Crisis of mine. This weekend has been really bad for me,to the point to where I was going to abandon Art forever (it’s a long story),so I have to thank this movie in a way. Its fully artistic (and sometimes foggy) aesthetic gave me hope for the future and my comic art style.
And again, this isn’t a Disney/Pixar movie in the veins of Cars and Finding Nemo, but how they made me feel emotions for a creature wrecking **** is,and will be,SO unquestionable.
However, there are flaws, and these kinda can’t be unforgiven?
Obviously,I wanted more big action. As we were walking out of the IMAX Screening,my brother was like “you can cut the human parts, and nothing changes, since, without that,it’s just big-ass monsters fighting”,and yeah,to a certain degree…
Also,I really really REALLY didn’t care for Vera Farmiga in this movie. Besides “she’s Madison’s (AKA Millie Bobby Brown giving it her all) Mom” and “she’s the one with the MacGuffin”,there’s really nothing to care about her,as she’s just used for the story like a random piece of a 50+ piece Jigsaw Puzzle.
But besides these flaws, when your favorite Movie of 2019 is a brawl between a Giant Radioactive Monster and a 3-headed Dragon (and not the new Jordan Peele movie or the new Marvel “3hrs of Fan Service” movie),there’s really something wrong with 2019. Granted,I haven’t seen Booksmart or Apollo 11,as they still didn’t come out here in Italy.
This is the one where I wanted the cheers and/or the applauses as the movie went by,especially for that 3rd Act,which makes the movie “More vengeful than Avengers Endgame” (I’m trademarking that just now,I SWEAR,if I don’t see this quote on the Blu-ray...)
Godzilla King Of The Monsters is so far the best movie of the year, and it’s a big Plot Twist for goddamn sure.
Also yeah,stay until the Credits.

The character development of the main characters and the side characters works organically to tell a great script with some cheesy lines to entertain us from the depressing and dark ambience of the film. The score is beautifully orchestrated, the production was very well crafted and the cgi was done perfectly with a blast for us to experience more realistic monster battle that will take us to a big monster ride. Let’s begin with the actors. All the actors with exception of O’shea Jackson have pivitol roles, or at least deliver their lines, and emote their feelings with great professionalism. Mr Jackson is just a standard Jarhead with not much thought put in to his character. The plot. Vera Farmiga and Millie Bobby Browns character, are kidnapped by Charles Dance character to steal and use a machine that is capable of “controlling” the monsters. Charles Dances character wants to use the machine to destroy humanity, so that he can rebuild the planet, with the radiation the Titans emanate (the radiation causes the earths vegetation to grow exponentially) I want to remind you that Ghidorah (3 headed dragon) is not the main antagonist, he is just a plot device, a mindless creature that was set loose just like the Indominus Rex in Jurassic World. Charles Dance is the real antagonist. The rest of the cast aren’t really developed which isn’t bad, this is a summer monster movie after all. People complained how Millie Bobby Brown was just a 1 dimensional screaming girl. And my rebuttal is, wouldn’t you be the same in this apocalyptic crisis? I hate how leading roles who portray a normal person needs to have some “grand purpose” it just feels shoe horned in. If their is 2 things that I didn’t really like about the film, is how Millie Bobby Brown is able to steal the Orca device, and somehow know how to use it Now I’m not annoyed that she steals it, in the film, the terrorist and Charles Dances character are in a state of panic and distress. Their is no reason to guard the Orca, because 1. Vera Farmiga (supposedly) is the only person who knows how to use it. And 2. It’s the end of the world. The Orca is the last thing they want to touch, since it summoned all the monsters. (They wanted to release one monster at a time, released Ghidorah first and underestimated Ghidorahs power) I also didn’t quite understand why Vera Farmiga character wanted to use the monsters to redeem herself for the death of her son that died in the beginning during the San Francisco attack in 2014. The pacing was great! their are more monster scenes and less exposition in this one. Every scene had a reason for it to be there. If a fight wasn’t happening, the cast would explain why they are headed to a destination, or the motives of the terrorist. The CGI is good. People complain of how the scenes are dark or rainy but the reason why the films are portrayed that way is not just to show a sense of scale, but because these monsters are larger then life. The snow or rain effects are implemented to “distract” the audience to convey realism rather than a giant CGI monster. This tactic was used in other giant monster films like Pacific Rim. Movie directors want to implement humans as well as CGI so that we as an audience can get an idea of how massive these monsters are in comparison, without the human element, and just the single monster standing there, our perspective of the creature diminishes. My final thoughts are this. The plot of Godzilla KOTM is ridiculously over the top, but that doesn’t mean it’s flawed. There is a villain with a clear motive, and the protagonist have a goal to lure, direct, and even heal Godzilla to fight Ghidorah. (Because they tried to nuke them with a special weapon and it didn’t work) And that’s all that needs to be said. The radiation plot is a bit weird, but whatever. As long as the plot doesn’t contradict itself, we as an audience must not put our own sense of reality in a film devoid of any realistic properties. This is a movie of a monster fighting other monsters. Anyone who assumed that this film has a deep metaphorical meaning that makes you feel “smart” for figuring out the directors hidden messages; look else where, because Godzilla King of the Monsters Is not that movie. Just like a boxing match or a UFC fight, we watch them for the fight itself. If you want plot and motives and drama in your fights, then watch pro wrestling. Expand

for any parents theres some swearing in there but nothing you wouldnt expect to see if this situation was really happening(your kids would have heard this).

it's a step up from the last film with nods to the older films (including using the original godzilla theme!).

The fights are satisfying and while there may be one or two moments that leave you questioning the actions of the human characters, there would be no film without those actions.

It is much closer to my favourite era films including Godzilla 2000 and Giant Monsters All Out Attack than anything else and i welcome that.
The plot is of insane eco-terrorists using the monsters to destroy most of humanity to save the world.
None of the dialogue, logic or plot devices make any sense but that was true in many Godzilla films.
What we do get is a lot of non-stop action, loud booming sound and hulk smash.
It's like they took all the Godzilla lore, theories and actions and threw them into a big pot and stirred them around. They even added some new lore to the mix.
There are little nods to the old dialogue and films thrown in .
Much better than the last 2.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The movie touches on the cliché subject that humans are the "disease" of our world. This idea is the whole driving force behind a woman/mom, that lost her son a few years ago, to simply murder billions of people and animals. This idea itself is ofcourse not totally undoable, for example "avengers infinity war" was able to pull it off perfectly. The problem lies within the character development of that woman. You could compare it with Albert Einstein trying to prove the earth is flat, it would just NEVER happen.

This made the movie totally unrealistic and that fact alone was enough to pull me completely out of the movie without ever getting back into it. All I could do was wonder who came up with such a sloppy excuse.

With a mediocre plot and some fairly sizable holes that you simply need to accept and move on, yet again, the monsters are the stars in this third installment of the Zilla Universe. Brand new monsters with some compelling mythology make this movie worth the ticket price. The movie fails to deliver any real stand out performances by the human cast, but who watches this for a good story? Am I right? The exciting, new, powerful and honestly, fantastic Titan battles left that pleasing feeling of satisfaction at the end of the 2 hour and change run time. The movie left an opening for more of these monumental kaiju standoffs and I cannot wait! Tip a forty for Boston. Let's do a Euro-trip next. Expand

Godzilla: King of the Monsters is a must-see film this summer. For those looking into whether or not to watch this film, I have only one thing to say do not let a negative review from so-called critics dissuade you. If someone didn't enjoyGodzilla: King of the Monsters is a must-see film this summer. For those looking into whether or not to watch this film, I have only one thing to say do not let a negative review from so-called critics dissuade you. If someone didn't enjoy this movie it is because they were watching it looking for something it never was meant to be. So go to the movie and just enjoy a giant monster movie with all the action people felt was missing from the first one and then some. If you want the most out of this movie then take some time and verse yourself in the Japanese films as this movie even though it doesn't require you to recognize them is heavily steeped in small details that fans of the source material will love and feel rewarded for recognizing. This film does what it was meant to give you an all-out brawl between monsters of cataclysmic proportions, all the while dragging you up close and personal with incredible visual effects and some of the most immersive sound ever featured in a film to date. In conclusion, this film makes a promise and then over delivers on that promise all the way using visuals and audio to deliver an experience that will have you feeling as if every bone in your body is vibrating with pure excitement. This movie was great. The humans had that 90’s action movie style acting and plot to them. You know? Like Armageddon, Independence Day, Die Hard. Monsters took the movie. It was all about them this time. Gonna go watch it again!

I've been a Godzilla fan since I was a kid. I can't believe Godzilla KOTM is struggling so much in the box office... It's breaking my heart.

My personal favorites when talking about past movies was of course the original 1954 Godzilla, 1995's Godzilla Vs. Destoroyah and 1991's Godzilla Vs. King Ghidorah.

I saw Godzilla KOTM last Saturday in IMAX and absolutely loved it! The incredible visuals, beautiful yet terrifying design of the monsters, the epic movie sound track and yes, even the characters/plot made for one EPIC ride! I will definitely see it again this coming Saturday and have already pre-ordered the BluRay/4K steel book so I'llget it right when it's released. It was without a doubt better than 2014 Godzilla. Yes it had it's faults but it was an EPIC monster movie regardless. The fact that it's doing nearly as poorly in the box office as the obscenity that is the 98 Zilla is utterly sickening... I blame ROTTEN TOMATOES and SO CALLED CRITICS for the poor box office numbers. You can't trust them because they're not true Godzilla fans so they don't understand how the movies are supposed to be. They complain about too much Godzilla in the movie... Really?!? They complain about weak story line and characters... Monster movies are about what???... You guessed it! THE MONSTERS. That's what we want to see and that's exactly what we got!

Most Godzilla movies have had a goofy plot and somewhat weak characters but that's what makes them fun! Some have the underlying message like 1954 being about the atomic bomb, 2016 Shin Godzilla being about the government failing to act quickly when it came to Tsunami relief. This one os no different! It has an underlying message in it as well... Personally I don't think the characters/plot in KOTM is bad when compared to past Godzilla movies. If anything, they have improved upon it.

This was a movie made for Godzilla lovers, directed and written by a true fan (Michael Dougherty) of the Godzilla series ranging all the way back to the original 1954 Godzilla and it shows through with all of the small nods to past films.

Thank you to the cast and crew for making such an amazing film for us Godzilla lovers out there!

When I first saw the first one 5 years ago the hype of that film was worth it and I can say I feel the same to this latest Godzilla film in the new monsterverse and I have to say this is by far one of the best Godzilla film I have seen in a long time. The story was great, it had interesting ideas and character development and best of all and this is the first they gave Godzilla his original roar and even the 1954 roar in one scene which was the best thing I had seen and my reaction on it was shocking and I was happy.

King Ghidorah was also an amazing but terrorizing monster in the film and at one scene made my mouth drop was him eating one of the main cast which I love how the middle head is like not liking this at all, and when he does get his comeuppance by Godzilla it was by far my favorite scene in the movie.

If there is one thing I do have to complain about is the critic and bad reviews on this film docent make any sense.

Perfect Example, some say that there too much monster fights and not many human scenes? Kinda weird since its the opposite of what critics and fans me me included not a lot of monster fight and lots of human scenes?

When I went to see this film on June 2nd I didn’t notice this at all since it was 50% human and monster scenes. And I can say this was more lighter then Godzilla 2014 as I will agree that one was kinda hard to see as it was shot or put in night time.

In the end, this is still a great film way more better than the Netflix anime film, And I am happy that the wait is finally over and I’m looking for to Godzilla vs Kong next year. This film is a 9.5/10.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. A surprising opening for fans who have wanted to see the clash of the titans. We are established immediately in the narrative we have waited to see. A powerful actor effected by Godzilla. He comes crashing into frame in the beginning of the movie and it looks it is competent enough to shock you. If you almost had a heart attack at that encounter just wait till you get to the underwater oil tanker base of Monarch Before that we must adjust this films story with the correct characters in the wrong role with Emma Russell clearly a woman who is about to snap because her perfect daughter who is just like her needs to have been the one killed by Godzilla. A brother to Madison son of Emma and friend to Mark Russell that is part of the family and is there in the background. Mark Russell is portrayed as a grieving father who has enough back story to carry the entire film. Vera Farmigas lines we parody "..she was my world .. she was my everything "She was so important to me from this speech which the movie in whole hinges upon the movie can draw itself to the amazing art FILM narrative and achievement We can get to what I have been waiting for my whole life the monster duels the battles the duels and the incredible engagements of monsters I grew up watching on black and white television for so many years. The filmmakers clearly thought about this when scaling planning making and choreographing the fights. We go into the part of the film where doctor Monarch doctor Vivienne Graham doesn't get killed off by a monster because shes too interesting a character When Godzilla comes close to Monarchs oil tank underwater zone and base Rick Stantons line what are you DOING DUDE is cut to go into experiencing Godzilla in his full We run ahead to when Emma realizes Gojira has taken control from her and she is the person who chooses Madison russell's decisions and owns her plan and her choices and her scheme. Mark Russell and the crew are played exactly the same until the end of the movie when Emma who has refused to use her invention to save people and help the earth instead using the orca to strengthen gojira the Godzilla gojira battle goes to plan and remains as awesome Emma Russell and Mark have to work to save the world set aside their pain love their son and drop their differences to save the earth Getting to the crucial point Mark arch's fully by grabbing the orca sending his wife his Son and the monarch leaders into the air He is engulfed he is confronted by the rage he has for Godzilla for his lack of options & by his acceptance of the path GODZILLA and this solution He is really and metaphorically covered engulfed and surrounded by his grief and grabs the orca surrounded by red sox stadium surrounded by Godzilla and surrounded by yellow lightning exclaims in recovering from his grief and while acting drunk "HAIL TO THE KING" Godzilla acts in the film the nuclear bomb explodes saving the world from the alpha titan GOJIRA We of course later see on monarchs plain emma russell along with all the great monarch and powerful female and Women pose Emma posing ANTAGONIST And we have a reminder and of course a memorial for doctor Serizawa The scene we remember the movie we cut back to is the yellow lightning of GOJIRA screaming in MASSACHUSETTS Yellow lightning of Gojira screeching across FENWAY and our past patriots making world history SURROUNDED BY CLOUDS High Five watching the yellow lighting Patriots high five IN THE clouds This film has everything you dreamed of seeing Godzilla vs GOJIRA the alpha GOJIRA titan landing upon Corcovado Christ the Redeemer and the brilliant MARK RUSSELL line to see Godzilla defeat the Alpha titan GOJIRA and save all humanity and the earth. Godzilla 2: King of Monsters surrenders with the primacy of the audio visual show that promises and succeeds in getting and exhaling a few sighs from fans of the character who should be extremely satisfied with what they saw, is a great fun uncompromised, has a scene post credits in the end that is a very nice hook / reference.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. It’s hard to sift through this film for anything redeeming, but–gun to my head–I guess I could say that it’s a lot like The Meg in terms of Chinese production money, dialogue, tonal confusion, and the multiplicity of sacrificial suicide runs. Godzilla: King of the Monsters was the first film I saw with my dad since coming back home. We saw it opening night with a bunch of people who also craved the emotional abuse of throttled expectations. King of the Monsters has a lot of things wrong with it, but if we think of it as a sibling to The Meg, it will organize some of our criticism. On the point of Chinese production money, this is Wanda Qingdao’s first major film, but by all appearances its attempts to mass market this movie in China had all the same effects as every other Chinese production house: no sex, not even the acknowledgement of the existence of sexuality beyond the existence of children, no drugs, no smoking, no gore, not even papercuts, and the obligatory first scene shot in China. It gives the movie a washed out, thin feel, like someone left it in the dryer for too long and the lint trap is full of all the realism and emotional stakes instead of lint.

The dialogue, like The Meg, is consistently snarky, almost weirdly so, as if all the characters are jockeying to be low-key funny, even in situations that don’t call for humor. Kyle Chandler’s character is the chief violator of this, asking cattily if everyone has forgotten he joined the team to find his daughter, rephrasing the potential genocide of Boston as such, “Let’s just say, in another five minutes it’s gonna get real bad for anyone who’s a Red Sox fan.” The general effect is one of tonal confusion. Godzilla is the wrong combination of breezy self-aware cheese and dour seriousness.

The original trailer to this film was a lot more honest about its trajectory and would’ve probably guided audience’s expectations a little better than billing it as a Rock ‘Em, Sock ‘Em of monster mashups. The heart of the film lies in its investigation of loss and grief within a family, and it’s only through this story that the vehicle of Godzilla works as any sort of relevant metaphor or commentary.

There’s a weird fixation with countdowns: 1 min til detonation, 30 sec til impact of the “oxygen destroyer” (ugh), 10 sec til Godzilla boops our window, 6 min til Godzilla explodes. It feels so strange to have someone call out how long we should feel anxious, and then to be told we have to wait 6 whole minutes before our hero may or may not explode.

I’ve got three things that may or may not spoil the film for you below, but I tend to think that there’s really not anything in this movie that’s so complex that it’s a spoiler. I’m genuinely confused about Vera Farmiga’s slideshow while she’s revealing the Evil Plan via the world’s clearest Skype call. When does she have time to put it together? Or is it just a cinematic overlay to drive home her point? Like, we the audience can see it but no one else? Can we see the images with a frame around them in the receiver room or are they always full screen? At one point she seems to make a bit of a Tokyo Ghost-type argument in favor of irradiating the world’s cities, because it ends up–in a round about way–supercharging plant growth in those regions. That’s not actually how radiation works, right? Like, Chernobyl made vegetables grow like crazy, but they weren’t edible, were they?

2. On the point about all the noble suicide runs: there sure is a lot more love in the office for Dr Serizawa (Ken Watanabe’s character) than there is for Sally Hawkins (Shape of Water). They both die, but literally no one but Ken references Sally after her death. Multiple people say the words “This is what Dr Serizawa would want,” or “Let’s do this for Serizawa,” which feels really rough. On a related note, it feels weird that Farmiga gets the easy out by dying while luring Ghidora away from the helicopter that’s got her family on it. A lot more interesting a plot would have been seeing her pay for her crimes and try to patch things up with her family after their unification and her change of heart in Boston. Instead, the story takes the Bradley Cooper route from A Star is Born.

3. Last, a point about the Mothra/Fire Demon fight, which may or may not matter at all in the scheme of things, says The Ringer: once we see the way that Godzilla’s hydrogen bomb explosion snuffs out Ghidora, I felt so relieved that Mothra had already died in (another) noble suicide, but all of a sudden we see that flaming **** bow for Godzilla at the end and I’m left wondering, How the eff does Rodan survive that blast with a “six mile radius” but Ghidora doesn’t? Does it have to do with Ghidora being an alien species? Would Mothra have been cool too or would she have been killed by the blast?

King of the Monsters obviously doesn’t deserve the time we’ve devoted to it...

Yet the 2nd is very satisfying done by a stranger. The story clings to the end as the actors (a like for the actress stranger things that offers a convincing performance). Where the film makes all kind of immoderation is in the way of destroying everything. Between games of sumptuous light devastation and ultra wide plan we can only think that photography is weak point .. Quite the contrary visually it is an undeniable strong point.

Godzilla 2!

The visual effects were phenomenal and awesome especially Mothra (who was also beautiful), King Ghidorah, Godzilla, Behemoth, Rodan, and Scylla. The action sequences were magnificent and awesome especially when King Ghidorah came out of the ground and the final battle. The cinematography was excellent. The acting from Millie Bobby Brown, Bradley Whitford, Vera Farmiga, and Kyle Chandler was fantastic. The musical score was superb. The writing was not great and the pacing was a little slow but overall it was a really entertaining movie. Expand

When I watched the 2014 Godzilla movie I was less than impressed as can be seen from my review here.

When watching this one I felt it was marginally better.

True to the Hollywood standards today, or perhaps lack thereof, the script writers just had to try and squeeze in a lot of green **** about how we destroy the planet and something has to be done bla bla bla.

Interesting enough though, the way it was done, actually made the green fanatics the bad guys in the movie. Whether that was intentional or the writers was too stupid to realize it I do not know.

The story is essentially about how one green fanatic in particular releases the “Titans” as they are called in the movie and uses them to wreak havoc, killing millions, to “balance things” and start a new world. That is your typical green fanatic although with a bit more means than usual to implement his deluded fantasies. Of course Godzilla, with the help of a few clear minded humans, comes to the rescue. That’s pretty much it. As I wrote, a typical substandard Hollywood script.

What makes this movie better though is that the implementation is not so **** full of absolutely stupid and unintelligent sequences as the 2014 movie. The implementation is actually not that bad. The action sequences are really quite good and there’s plenty of big ass monsters in this movie.

I also quite liked that cool super-carrier airplane that the Monarch crew flew around in.

As despicable as the previously mentioned green fanatic is, the role was nicely implemented as well as the main protagonist and most people around him.

The part about kick-starting Godzilla after he was wounded by detonating a nuke in front of his nose was a bit silly though. So was the hole it’s to hot and radioactive for drones as well as for a nuclear submarine so let’s send in a guy on foot. Seriously?

Also the after scenes where life magically sprouted everywhere the Titans had wrecked havoc was more than a little stupid.

If this hadn’t been a cool giant monster movie with a lot of special effects I would have scored it a lot lower. However, I am a sucker for these kinds of movies and I really like Godzilla. I even watched some of the old black and white movies when I was a kid.

One of the most visually stunning movies I have ever seen with some of the greatest action sequences. The human side of the story drags this down from a 10 to a 9 but the Kaiju (titan) side of the story is very refreshing.

A Great improvement over 2014. The characters are kinda interesting, the monster action is fun, and the amount of fan service is astounding. Truly a film for Godzilla fans.

The problem of this film is typical in all Godzilla films. With all these monsters bashing each other out, who needs the human characters? They are played well, but at the end of the day, they are clearly not the focus of the movie. As such, the unfolding story line rings hollow, as clearly they are just padding until the next set piece. On a more positive note, the monsters...wow. Seeing Ghidorah, Rodan and Mothra on screen using modern CGI is a sight to behold and worth the price of admission. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This movie goes back to Godzilla's root story. Set up like a traditional Godzilla movie. A movie that true godzilla fans can Appriciate. The extraterrestrial Ghidorah vs. Godzilla, The king of the monsters, Mothra, "Queen of the monsters" vs Rodan, "The fire demon." The first gods. In the movie, you follow monarch as these monsters rise up. Ghidorah controls the other monsters to tear the earth apart until humanity can step in and help Godzilla. With the help of the humans, godzilla can fight amd destroy Ghidorah. The fight scenes were worth the wait of the plot being set up. The CGI did the movie good. Several times I was about jumping out of the seat. The monsters were so beautiful. They resembled the monsters from previous movies (even including the Oxygen destroyer). If you grew up with Godzilla or are a Fan of the older movies, you will love this movie. I left the theater shaking. If you watch this movie, remember to stay for the end credit scene! This has become my favorite movie for sure! Expand

I am studying film at a very well accredited university and understand films interworkings well. If you can look past the average human interactions, this movie is stellar. That's what makes a Godzilla movie, a GODZILLA MOVIE. It is an intense ride that any Godzilla fan or normal movie goer should enjoy. Take the movie as a monster movie and let the human parts carry along the exposition that helps people who may not be familiar with the universe catch up to speed. If you do that, there is no reason why you shouldnt have fun watching Godzilla KOTM. Expand

Critics liked 2014 version better for the “human drama” while audiences fell asleep as Godzilla barely appeared in his own movie. In this movie that’s reversed. Monsters are the focus and their fights are spectacular and given abundant attention while human characters serve to advance the monster story vice versa. This is how a real giant monster movie should be, no matter how much “critics” disagree. The monster also stands taller than comparable movies like Pacific Rim and has much for visceral, intense and spectacular fights. All in all, this is THE giant monster movie. Expand

The rest of them are silly, over-the-top monster mash films catering to our inner child, and these films have a very distinct style that often transcends broad B-Movie tropes alone. Doughtery's film taps mostly into the latter, but it is also a highly enjoyable love letter to the entire franchise, from two clear references to the 1954 original to a final battle hybridizing elements of "Godzilla vs. Mechagodzilla 2" and "Godzilla vs. Destroyah." This film is a blast if you go into it with proper expectations. Remember that the "serious" side of the Godzilla spectrum has been covered in two unique ways since 2014 (one a light environmental allegory and exercise in restraint, the other a lo-fi political satire). This one, on the other hand, strives to channel the most entertaining aspects of the Showa and Heisei films; it's Toho-style popcorn entertainment at its finest, and to view it with any type of lofty critical eye is to appear synonymous with some of the film's overly serious, unintentionally funny dialogue.

Sure, there have been some truly bad films that have been bailed out this way by fans (look at you, Bay-directed Transformers films), but hollow, robotic human characters are still better than overtly annoying, sometimes racist ones. Doughtery's human characters are here to dictate the flow of monster fights, and that's what they should be doing. Do their arcs leave something to be desired? Sure. Is the film's narrative messy? Oh yes. But these complaints are all but meaningless in a film featuring a giant atomic lizard, a three-headed alien dragon, a giant moth, a pteranodon, and bunch of other ridiculous **** (keep an eye out for the woolly mammoth kaiju). Just go see this film and have a blast, and if you're out of touch with this longstanding franchise, watch any title with "vs." in the title to properly prepare yourself.

However, they use the flaws of this movie to put it way down. Expect the flaws, but the movie has incredibly redeemable qualities. The titan fights and all scenes that has anything to do with Titans are incredibly entertaining. The actors were considered the biggest flop in this movie (rightfully so), but a lot of other lead actors redeemed some of that. The film has great pacing to be entertaining without exhausting the viewer, which is perfect for a summer blockbuster.

Anyway, to cut to the chase, is the movie better than the 2014 reboot? No. Is it a lot more entertaining? In a lot of ways yes. The movie was cliche, some bad acting, and felt a little too simple at times. But has all the qualities to be a fun summer blockbuster, this movie is obviously not seeking to be one of the best Godzilla movies ever. It’s just supposed to be a bunch of fun and if you’re a classic Godzilla fan, you’d understand that a lot of Godzilla (not all) movies do just that. They just have a bunch of fun. Unlike the 2014 reboot where it was fun and cool yet also very serious and had more realistic plot layout. That film was a better quality movie. But I’ve never seen a movie rated so low for the cons while not praising the pros nearly at all.

Go watch this movie and watch it for what it is. It’s a classic fun-to-watch Godzilla kaiju battling movie that shouldn’t be taken so seriously.

I liked the 2014 Godzilla movie, but this sequel is a titanic mess.

Good news first. The kaiju part of this movie is great. Not just the CGI quality, but the actual battles make sense. There are plenty of references to old japanese Godzilla movies, such as Ghidorah being an extraterrestrial life form and Mothra being an ally to Godzilla. The point of the movie is to depict Godzilla as the king of the monsters of this world, and quite literally, many monsters come from around the globe to kneel before Godzilla.

Now the bad news. The human factor in this film is just horrible and annoying. More so than the 2014 Godzilla movie. First there are scientists fighting to not have the Titans killed in their sleep for an absurd reason (just like Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom's similar plot point), a plot which smells of real-world SJW agenda and vegan-like activists. Then there is Monarch trying to observe and study the slumbering Titans, but WTF with that "eco-terrorism" plot? That's just trash. They wasted such a good actor as Charles Dance ("Tywin Lannister" in Game of Thrones) for nothing. And while this is a fantasy action movie, WTF with that flying fortress acting like the Avengers' Helicarrier? Can't Monarch just equip that air carrier with tons of laser guns and "Oxygen Destroyer" bombs? Last but not least, WTF with the ancient civilization ruins in the depths of the ocean, the place where Godzilla goes to recuperate whenever it's injured?

Godzilla is the King of the Monsters, but King Kong doesn't agree with that, and Godzilla doesn't take kind to insubordination LOL There is a "Godzilla vs Kong" film coming next year to settle this dispute. Well, I hope the sequel is better than this.

After years of imagining how I'd do things differently than those who've gotten their inept hands on the franchise (post 1995), it's well satisfying to see someone get the Godzilla monsterverse RIGHT. It's as close to the movie that's lived in my head for the years I've wasted playing in bands & partying (instead of moving to L.A. & working hard to become a feature-length director myself) as I could pragmatically hope for. At long last, my inner - child who cried at the end of 'Godzilla: 1985' on VHS & had to wait a long, long time to see him return in Heisei flicks - can rest peacefully now that his hero has finally been done justice :] Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This film lacked spent so much time hyping up the fights between the Godzilla and Ghidorah and after what feels like an eternity having to wade through poor dialogue between underdeveloped characters pushing attempting to push forward a weak plot you finally see the two fight for possibly three minutes. This is then followed by nearly another hour of setting development (the world is being destroyed by the Titans) until we finally see some real monster on monster action. The CGI was not particularly exceptional, for instance, close-ups on Ghidorah's heads looked awful in comparison to the CGI of the dragons in Game of Thrones, yet Godzilla looked to be rendered in remarkably higher quality. The ending fight was rather enjoyable, Thermonuclear Godzilla was a spectacle and satisfying finale to the Ghidora and Godzilla brawl. All in all the film would have been better suited if they had removed many of the horrendous one-liner cuts to and from both the main characters and supporting characters especially in the middle of action sequences. In reality, Thomas Middleditch's character felt far more developed and as if he belonged in this story than the characters of Kyle Chandler, Vera Farmiga, and Millie Bobby Brown. A tremendous disappointment! Expand
