There's really not much to say on this one other than it didn't really live up to the hype in my opinion. You know what made movies like King Kong, the first Jurassic Park, Cloverfield, and Jaws great monster films? All the movies build suspense and show us glimpses of the monster throughout the film. All the movies build suspense and show us glimpses of the monster throughout the film. Then, before we get too bored, they reveal the creatures. With these movies, the main monsters drive the films plot and story. Godzilla, however, doesn't really do that. The whole plot is driven by the film's antagonists: the MUTO's (Massive Unidentified Terrestrial Organisms). The MUTO's cause most of the film's destruction and terror. And, in my opinion, the MUTO's are too generic and forgettable. I don't have a short attention span, Godzilla just isn't in the movie. The MUTO's look too much like the Cloverfield monsters. If Godzilla is supposed to be an allegory for nuclear destruction, or the destructive force of nature, well it doesn't really work out in my opinion. If the focus of the originals was to show how Godzilla affected peoples lives, they didn't really show that in this reboot. Most of the movie was about a generic mission to stop Godzilla and the MUTO's.

That wouldn't be too bad if we had Godzilla for more than 15 minutes (give or take) in the movie. I really would've liked to see more of "The King Of Monsters". The film torments us with glimpses of Godzilla and shows him fighting the MUTO's. Then the movie changes to another scene. It avoids what could've been spectacular battles. Really? WTF?

To add to the other dilemmas, the cast is a bit too generic. The soldier, the wife, and the conspiracy nutjob. Bryan Cranston (who evidently has given up being a drug kinpin after faking his death) is the most interesting character, and he extremely underused. (--SPOILER ALERT: He was killed off way too quickly.--) Aaron Taylor Johnson (who I guess has given up his costumed identity as Kick-Ass) and Elizabeth Olsen are fine, but like the MUTO's, are forgettable. (Did anyone get my Kick-Ass and Breaking Bad reference? Also, how weird must it be for the two to be a married couple in this film, and then a pair of superhero siblings in The Avengers 2: Age of Ultron? Might I add they are sometimes an incestuous couple in the comics?) Ken Watanabe is only there to tell us important plot details. The Army is not entertaining enough and just a distraction, especially in a film that should star the King Of Monsters. Most of the movie is filled with boring sublots. The move makers didn't want to oversensitze us to too much CGI, so I feel they crammed in human drama.

The film starts out interesting, but after SPOILER ALERT Joe Brody dies, the film goes downhill from there. There is a lot of exposition and, as we are taught in school, "rising action".

Visually, it looks great. But in these days of CGI spectacle, that is the norm for Hollywood blockbusters. The final 15 minutes are good, and the scene where SPOILER ALERT Godzilla shoots atomic breath down the MUTO's throat is awesome. But even that, yes even that, isn't enough to save the Americanized "Super-Sized" Godzilla and his movie. Just kidding, Godzilla's design is great. (Maybe a bit too bulky? But the scales on his back are great, especially in the swimming scenes.

Ultimately, IMO the movie falls short in all aspects. However, I'm glad others seemed happy with the film. 10 years after the last official Godzilla movie, the King Of Monsters is back! And that roar is so iconic. Godzilla is very badass, lol. Can't wait for the sequel! I welcome Godzilla's return into movies, even if it was a bit underwhelming.… Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Honesty I was expecting better. Even though the CGI was great the acting was really bland except 1 or 2. I know you can argue that the Toho movies had bad acting to but at least they were interesting. If the humans aren't interesting in a monster where 90% of the movie is bored humans failing to act scared. I actually don't mind that much that Godzilla isn't in it that much since in some of the great Godzilla movies he doesn't show for a while, but what those movies did that this one doesn't was give some great battles when he is there. Seriously the movie has 1 fight scene and while it was great it set up 2 more but makes you watch more of the boring humans. I would have understood if there was only one conflict but don't tease me. I hope the sequel will improve upon these mistakes.… Expand

This is successfully achieved as the film proposes a darker, grittier and more authentic feel than its predecessor.
Godzilla is sleek ,beautifully crafted and it's obvious that the studio spared no expense in rendering a Hollywood monster that would leave audiences wanting more. Unfortunately this is to the detriment of the film itself as the title character is more often than not overshadowed by both it's Kaiju and human opposition.
Edwards' attempt at blending both monster porn and a compelling story of human courage ultimately misfires as he fails to strike the mean between both approaches. These two primary concepts are underdeveloped and Aaron Taylor-Johnson's bland cliched performance highlights the lack of attention given to characters who show less life than there primordial counterparts.
However Edwards does step up to the mainstream with confidence and his Spielbergian influences add some degree of quality to an altogether under-whelming experience. The slow tease introduction of the showpiece à la Spielberg's Jaws is certainly a step in the right direction but the lack of a payoff ultimately negates the positive intentions. This along with the never thoroughly explored 'Man versus Nature' angle only aids in emphasizing how much more this film could and should have been.
Although sandwiched between some heavy hitting summer blockbusters, such as X-men, Godzilla is sure to attract significant audience numbers but with the final product delivering less Jurassic Park and more Lost World, it is undecided as to whether or not this is the film that will resurrect a franchise already dead in the water.… Expand

Overall, I somewhat enjoyed this movie. However, the plot was quite weak and there just wasn't enough action as I was expecting. Also the ending was pathetic and the monster battles could of been way more epic. This movie had potential but IOverall, I somewhat enjoyed this movie. A more realistic look of the most famous movie monster therefore distancing itself from Godzilla's much earlier films. If your expecting Bryan Cranston as some sort of lead role then turn back now because he's not in it for that long. Its a shame really because the trailer portrayed him very well. I can't help thinking he was only in this as a selling point because he was in Breaking Bad. Instead they make us sympathise with a dull and unrelatable marine soldier. This brings the film down further because he's terrible in this. Honestly the most blatant and obvious example of a bad main character. The most interesting character (next to Bryan Cranston) is Godzilla himself. At the end of the film, he's treated as some sort of hero for defeating the enemy MUTO's. But here's the thing in every film he's portrayed in Godzilla only serves himself and nothing else. I only thought that Godzilla defeated the MUTO's because he wanted to reclaim his territory which is cool but the film ultimately wants to express Godzilla as a saviour of the people instead of an uncaring and unfeeling atrocitie of humankind. Overall Godzilla is a good watch if not a little dull in parts. But if the perfectly executed fight scenes sell it to you then this film could be forgiven for a lot.… Expand

A modern day attempt to remake the Godzilla of the 1960-1970's. Special effects were solid, no doubt. But a standard Godzilla monster plot with 100 minutes of bad acting and 20 minutes of monster. The Trailers of the film are mostly false advertising, and the movie does not really portray GODZILLA the way it did in the trailers......
and the King himself receives a very poor amount of screen time for a 2 hr movie, and they cut away a couple times, up to the point where it will frustrate you.
Most of the human characters are bland, But they're not bad either, just not good to the point where you would care for them.
Only one I actually cared for was Bryan Cranston but he sadly doesn't get a whole lot of screen time either.

The GOOD parts:
The CGI, animation is done very well, even sometimes where they are shown in the dark, looked pretty good for my taste.
The monster designs are GREAT ,The MUTOs that Godzilla fight may have some simularities with CLOVERFIELD, but I find them interesting.
The monster fight scenes are great as well at the end.
Some of the tension build up is also pretty good.
And the humans encountering with the monsters is also GREAT.

Bottom Line
It stands good as a GODZILLA movie which is why I give it a 7/10

but as a film that lives up to the trailers I give it a 5/10.… Expand

Unfortunately, the scenes of destruction don't occur until about halfway through the film and Bryan Cranston doesn't appear for long. Also, much of the film is shot at night so it's very difficult to see the mayhem created, so don't bother with seeing this in 3D as the images will be rendered useless. The build-up to the tension is extremely long so you might be bored by the exposition where only Cranston out of all the humans characters, injects energy. One also wonders if this movie should be called "Muto" because these creatures seem to feature more in the film than Godzilla. It doesn't matter what the critics say anyway because "Godzilla" will still be a huge international box office hit.… Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I went to my local cinema who had just received 3D and i watched what i though was going to be one of the better movies of the year. I don't know why i got myself hyped up so much because i just feel even further, so here is my review of Godzilla. Let's start with the acting with Johnson as our lead he really doesn't say much..at all, and when he does speak it is literally five words- now this didn't bother me too much just it did get annoying. Wantanabe provided a decent performance and he didn't say much either, heck pretty much nobody said much in this film, i think the only person who said anything more than five words was Cranston who was axed before the 30 minute mark. Now we move onto the CGI, and boy it was impressive, no flaws and actually quite convincing, except for maybe the flood scene, even so i am glad to see that the money went to the department that is needed the most in a film like this. Now onto the writing, what can you expect from a monster film, poor writing and not the greatest explanation for a story, the film itself was so predictable and so stereotypical it wasn't even funny, i just feel the movie could have been better if the writers (who also wrote Doom and The Expendables) could have put some more effort into their work. Now i come to the final and most important component, the action and it really did work, it was perfect, Godzilla's reveal- perfect, the fight scene in Hawaii- awesome and final battle in San Fransisco, well it was a little bit overdone but still i can bypass that and say with confidence that this remake was better than the 1998 version. I highly recommend you watch Godzilla as it is awesome just not a great film therefore it receives a 6/10.… Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I just love the way they casually set off a nuclear device off the coast of San Francisco. That would cause more damage than Godzilla ever did. Too many people, and not enough kaiju. It has been said "a camel is a horse designed by a committee." Way too much "plot:" not nearly enough action. Too much military nonsense (although the "insertion" from 30,000 feet was cool-looking, but not really how they'd do it). And what were those pathetic creatures? The writers couldn't decide if they wanted Rodan or Mothra, so they created a.....bat with a human butt. Gareth Edwards used the same blinking lights he used in "Monsters," (which also could have been a lot better with more monsters and less human "interaction"). Am I the only one who noticed they stole King Kong's nose and facial expressions? They had the opportunity to make a movie using real science to advance the plot (archeologists do keep finding bigger and bigger dinosaurs), but no, they had to go all Hollywood on us and make a movie somebody thought would appeal to the widest audience. And so they got plain vanilla. Not even vanilla bean, just vanilla.....… Expand

I give it a 6 because 1. It has one of the best acting and plots 2. Godzilla was extremely detailed. But the downsides 3. Also, Godzilla was severely underused and should've fought less generic CGI monsters. They should've pitted him against another iconic Godzilla monster, or make Godzilla the bad guy. All I can say is I was disappointed with the execution of the movie. It's not a bad movie; it's shot quite well and has interesting audio/visual techniques, but overall it's not worth seeing.… Expand

Godzilla is absolutely awesome when he is beating the crap out of something so why then did they make him feel like a supporting role. If the film had more of this it would have been at least a nine. There are some good bits without him though especially at the beginning where a lot of the tension is being built and there are some good proformances there but then when it feels like it's godzilla time to take the stage we instead get another boring story line following a soldier as we have seen many times before. The reason I am so sad about it is that there seems to be so much potential that just isn't realised and so I would love to see a sequel as I believe there is real potential here.… Expand

I went to see this film just for fun not expecting anything much. It was OK but considering it was primarily aimed at kids. It was not something that I saw as necessarily good for them. If anything it would give the really young kids nightmares for about a month and make older kids more hyper-and probably the young ones also. The audience was mostly fathers with young kids in tow. I, along with the rest of mankind waited anxiously for the new Godzilla movie to break. After the dreadful 1998 debacle with Matthew Broderick (where’s he been?), Hank Azaria (where’s he been?) & Jean Reno, I’m confident saying the GodzillaI, along with the rest of mankind waited anxiously for the new Godzilla movie to break. After the dreadful 1998 debacle with Matthew Broderick (where’s he been?), Hank Azaria (where’s he been?) & Jean Reno, I’m confident saying the Godzilla freaks were chalking off days on their calendar like a prisoner chalks off his days on his cell wall. With all this anticipation the new movie had to be a sure hit, if not with the industry then with its fans…Well, let’s take the tour.

The movie should have opened with a disclaimer informing everyone who paid their hard earned cash, or stolen cash, depending on your place in society, that the first 50 minutes or so was going to lull you into dream state where you swear you could hear those 2 adorable Asians twins singing “Mothra, Mothra” At any point during the first hour of this movie of the movie I would have loved to have seen Mothra jump on screen and start kicking ass, not Godzilla’s but Gareth Edwards who directed this movie. Listen, I know the diehard Godzilla fans will say “if you look at all the Godzilla movies you’ll notice the Mean Green stomping Machine has minimal screen time in all of them” Really?? So 28 wrongs shouldn't make a right!

I plopped into my nice comfortable recliner, I’m all comfy eating my popcorn, when, what the hell, It’s the guy from Breaking bad! Hey, I have nothing against Bryan Cranston but at about the time he realizes his on screen wife, Juliette Binoche’ ass is soon going to be a bright nuclear red, I was hoping the rage he was feeling was going to make him shave his head and revert back to his Walter White character if for nothing else but to keep the audience’s attention, which I could swear was starting to hum “Mothra, Mothra”.

Alright, enough of the bashing. All I’m trying to say is that studios spend more money promoting their movies than some small countries spend on keeping their people alive! When the movie does end you leave scratching your head wondering if I just saw a ‘monster” movie or the remake of “A Love Story”? However, a “monster” movie with a plot involving characters that fall in love with each other can work & has. Can you say King Kong? Yes, the beginning of that movie also dragged along a bit in the beginning but Peter Jackson was smart enough to use beauty to keep your attention until Kong arrives, both in the female form, Naomi Watts & in scenery, New Zealand. By the time Kong arrives you’re heart starts to pump just as mine did when I saw Godzilla making waves waiting for him to come on shore and start wreaking havoc. But then all I got was Godzilla walking with his back to the viewers! What the what?? Hell, my heart wasn’t pumping anymore, it was barely beating.

Jackson had enough sense to hit you full blast with Kong, taking no prisoners. Had Jackson taken Edwards approach just showing Kong’s ass, we would have been wondering why only his ass & was Kong going to take a sh!t on some of the tribesmen? Here is my thought to the studios that are willing to spend millions on strategy & concept and have no sense on what the public wants. We came to see Godzilla!

Let me put it to you this way. Would Paramount or Universal do a remake of the Godfather using Judd Apatow as their director? Hell no! They would track down Ridley Scott or Martin Scorsese. So why would Warner Brothers sign an unknown director with minimal experience to direct a nostalgic “Monster” movie we all grew up with? Godzilla deserved better! This one should have been a 9 or 10 but ends up with a 6.

Although I admit I was really excited to see this movie, I can honestly say that I was very disappointed. The creators spent a lot of the movie explaining the existence of Godzilla and his origin. Of course it is logical to tackle thatAlthough I admit I was really excited to see this movie, I can honestly say that I was very disappointed. The creators spent a lot of the movie explaining the existence of Godzilla and his origin. Of course it is logical to tackle that subject and explain why and how Godzilla came to be on earth and what awoke him to begin with. The movie leaves the viewer constantly deciding to love or hate Godzilla in respect - or fear - of his awesome power and dangerous presence. In the end, Godzilla unfortunately is a bit camera shy and doesn't make much of an appearance. Overall, the quality of the movie is great and goes much beyond action and explosions. The good thing about the story-telling style of this film is that if there is ever a sequel (for some reason) then Godzilla will not need any more explanation as to why he is on earth. There are characters throughout the movie as well but they all fail to captivate the viewer, but instead are simply tools used to drive the plot further. There is not much of an emotional attachment to the main character, instead I felt more attachment to Godzilla himself - not to mention I am sure that we were all cheering him on at some point - knowing full well that the main character consistently remained virtually powerless against the odds.

If you watch Godzilla, expect a lot of amazing detail, graphics, explosions, and talking! If you are a fan of Godzilla (or just want to wash the bad taste of the 1998 release "Godzilla" out of your mouth) then this movie is definitely for you!… Expand

As the first thirty or forty minutes of Godzilla (2014) played out, I thought this was going to be a pretty good film, maybe even a really good film. Cranston is intense and the story moves right along. I was very engaged. Cranston is intense and the story moves right along. I was very engaged. Only then, things happen. Basically, the military takes over the film and from then on it's boom bang bam. And I am left with certain complaints:

1) Let's put the SWAT team on the roof of a hotel so they have a clear line of fire because bullets out of assault rifles are really going to have an big impact on a monster the size of a small skyscraper.

2) So, we've got these helicopters, and they're packed with machine-guns, but let's fly in real real close so the even the monster with no wings has an even chance of reaching out and knocking the helicopters out of the sky.

3) We need to keep a close eye on Godzilla as he swims across the sea, because who knows if he's a good monster or a bad monster. So let's sail our aircraft carrier like 200 yards away from Godzilla's tail, even though Godzilla might sink the carrier just by brushing against it accidentally.

4) So we've got all these giant monsters popping up and threatening to destroy civilization but for some reason one of our main characters never catches an announcement via TV, radio or cell phone, like, hey y'all, if you're in the military report to your command immediately because it's a code red ultra emergency.

5) OK, like, we tried nuking Godzilla, or something, way back when, and that didn't work, and apparently we still haven't asked the question: "How could that not work?" And despite not asking that question we're still pretty darn sure that another nuke, just bigger and badder, is almost certainly going to work. Because, I guess, just the fact that you survived a nuclear blast doesn't mean you can do it again.

6) An Abrams tank can sit on the San Francisco shoreline and shoot targets at the far end of the Golden Gate Bridge but let's run those tanks out onto the bridge so they'll get a better view of monsters standing in the water beside the bridge. Sure, the tanks might go for a swim but what are you gonna do?

7) To judge by the closing credits it appears like the entire US Department of Defense provided technical advice on the making of the film so you'd probably be justified in assuming that everything in the film concerning the military is absolutely 100% accurate and correct. Well, maybe not.

On the whole this is not a bad entry into the giant monsters attacking civilization film genre, but it could've been a lot better. I mean it's almost like they had one set of writers and directors for the Bryan Cranston part of the film, and the B Team handled the rest of the film. Or maybe the C Team. You decide.… Expand

Some are just there cuz plot, whereas the ones that serve importance just sort of stand around planning how to kill Godzilla and the other two monsters. Elizabeth Olsen is only there to make you care about whether or not Aaron Taylor-Johnson's character survives to the end, which is something that Bryan Cranston's character did not succeed in doing, even though he should've. In my opinion, he was the best character in the movie, as he predicted that the monsters would eventually overpower the humans, but, when they did, he ended up getting killed. What? Why? I wish his character would've lasted longer just to see what he could've done. In the final battle scene, Godzilla does all the work in killing the two monsters, whereas the other soldiers all get themselves killed, and Aaron Taylor-Johnson runs off and tries to fight the monsters himself, but realizes how stupid he is being and cowers in fear, waiting for help to arrive. The only reason he survived is because his father was already dead and he had a wife and young son, however, if he didn't have that, and his character was just a miserable loser, the movie could've gotten away with killing him off. The special effects in this movie were absolutely phenomenal, and whoever edited this film should've won Best Editing at the Oscars. So, the characters just fall flat completely, but the special effects and monster scenes make up for that loss with their sheer scale and awesomeness.… Expand

In anticipation of Godzilla vs Kong, I've decided to rewatch all the previous Monsterverse movies. I've watched this when it first came out in Cinemas and I came out slightly disappointed. I've watched this when it first came out in Cinemas and I came out slightly disappointed. Now that I decided to finally rewatch it after 7 years, I wonder if my opinions will change or not? The premise is "Ford Brody (Aaron Taylor-Johnson), a Navy bomb expert, has just reunited with his family in San Francisco when he is forced to go to Japan to help his estranged father, Joe (Bryan Cranston). Soon, both men are swept up in an escalating crisis when Godzilla, King of the Monsters, arises from the sea to combat malevolent adversaries that threaten the survival of humanity. The creatures leave colossal destruction in their wake, as they make their way toward their final battleground: San Francisco". So is it actually better than I thought or is still as disappointing as I remember it?

Firstly, I actually really like the tone of this movie. After watching all the new Monsterverse movies and now going back, I think the serious and grounded nature are wonderful. It shows these Titans from the perspective of humans and makes them seem more fearsome and majestic. The original Japanese Godzilla portrayed the titular character as a force of nature and Gareth Evans (the director) perfectly captures this as well. I also really like the cinematography by Seamus McGarvey. The more tame colours really work in the movies favour by really giving it a war-like and disaster style feel to the movie. Additionally, there are some gorgeous shots in the movie and some stunning visual spectacles. The score by Alexandre Desplat is actually pretty good and at some parts such as the HALO jump is where the score really stands out. The final climax is also very thrilling to watch even though it is kind of dark though.

The biggest complaint I had with this movie is the severe lack of Godzilla. He is the titular character but is barely even in it. Heck, the villain monster, the MUTOs, appear more than him. I think what is really jarring is that when Godzilla appears they then cutaway to something else. For example, when Godzilla arrives near the airport and about to fight a MUTO but it then cutaways to some boring human characters who see it on TV. It felt quite insulting that they wouldn't show these fights and instead just telling us the conclusion from some human characters. I was screaming internally throughout the movie, "Let Them Fight". On that note, the human characters really suck. I think all the actors do a fine job although Aaron Taylor-Johnson who plays the main lead, Ford Brody, is quite lacking in a lot of personality in most of his scenes. Not entirely his fault as the character is written to be quite boring. Elle Brody (Elizabeth Olsen) is just playing the trope of wife and mother character, Dr. Ishirō Serizawa (Ken Watanabe) is a monster expert, Dr. Vivienne Graham (Sally Hawkins) is monster expert right-hand person. This is literally their personality and nothing else which makes all the characters very uninteresting. There is one interesting character Joe Brody (Bryan Cranston) who is the father of the main lead who also lost his wife due to unusual seismic activity and is trying to determine the cause of the meltdown that killed his wife. This screams main character as there is a backstory that is making us root for him. Plus he is played phenomenally by Bryan in every scene. However, they decide to kill him 30 minutes into the movie and replace him with his boring son. What a waste of a character and there was no real reason to kill him so early.

Overall, it's an all right movie. I don't agree with a lot of the decisions made in terms of story and characters but it nails the tone, atmosphere and visuals completely. It's a good monster movie and also a good start to the "Monsterverse".… Expand

During the movie humans try to intervene, but it seems the monsters hardly notice them when they aren't handing nuclear bombs on a platter, or when they aren't about to kill their babies. Godzilla is hardly in the movie, which should send red flags straight away. It is hard to keep your attention while watching this movie.

It's an average movie, it earns a 6/10 from me.… Expand

Taking a more symbolic disaster-flick approach to the title rather than the giant monster all-out smackdown as some of its predecessors had done; Godzilla 2014 shines the best when it comes to showing the aftermath of nature’s wrath on mankind and using imagery from tragic events known to viewers at the time of release to show a message of nature’s power over us. It has genuinely great cinematic moments that leave me in awe and a soundtrack that leaves a powerful impression as these creatures wreck havoc in unique ways. When the creatures are on the screen all attention is properly directed towards them, as the effects used to portray their size, and to give them a feeling of being part of the natural world, still works today as it is truly cutting edge with what they pulled off. The sound design as well demands to be played in surround sound as the film uses each roar to build the tone and to set the scene as even the creatures themselves prove to show some genuine symbolism that leaves the viewer to think a bit more than they thought to. And while the total screen time for all creatures totals to around twenty minutes, their devastation is known through the beautifully shot destruction. Regardless the movie does have genuine shortcomings that take away a lot of what the effort was made towards and stains the movie with genuine disinterest throughout several portions of the film, which is to be discussed in the cons. + The aftermath of nature is this films strong suit

Cons
To pull this iteration of Godzilla off in a disaster-flick, Spielberg approach; you have to have well written characters that one can emotionally attach to which this film sadly fails to provide. I could never feel for the characters, the emotion was there to feel for them and sometimes they genuinely have good moments of character but it never pays off nor does it leave me rooting for any of them. Even with the title character himself, which pains me to say because I have loved the character ever since I was a toddler, as they don’t develop his character outside of his origins and his purpose. They try to but it falls flat due to the interest being directed towards the villains of the movie which is honestly where the films development and true efforts into writing something actually extremely interesting go into play by showing a basis for the creature’s full life cycle. But with Godzilla, that isn’t provided unless you read up online on this iteration or look deeper into his actions. But the biggest problem is the film’s main character and focus of the story regarding him. It is painfully generic, and just takes away from some of the coolest portions of the film because the film decides to maintain the focus on this generic storyline regarding the character. Who, like most everything else, is underdeveloped. Another huge issue with the film is the lighting which makes some scenes or shots almost impossible to view which is an absolute shame as most of the action takes place at night and the use of strictly natural lighting is intensely present. There is a lot wrong with this film and for the sake of time, I would rather just save it for a separate piece.

Overall

There's more plot here than I was expecting, but also a lot of futile action which depending on what you're looking for can be frustrating. It's a pretty good crash bang monster flick but I wish the antagonist monsters looked a little cooler.

The plot was actually quite decent with the whole thing about the MUTOs wanting to lay their eggs and the US Military trying to stop that because it could kill millions of innocent civilians and the human characters were alright espeially for a movie where the main attraction is the Titans. But the thing I liked about it the most was the atmosphere and tone with it feeling way darker than most other Godilla movies in existance, that and you could actually feel about how dangerous these monsters would be if they were real because of how the camera angles were done making you feel like you're their with the characters experiencing everything they are, the ending also felt quite bitter sweet because they did kill the MUTO and destroyed the eggs so that way there isn't hundreds of them to deal with in a few years but they also destroyed most of San Francisco while doing so.… Expand

Lastly, the fight scenes between the monsters were brief moments of splendor.
Alas, the lack of an inspired screenplay wiped all of these pros clean off the table and left this as a mediocre monster flick with severely underdeveloped characters. The talent was there! Yet, the main character (Johnson) had "motivation" that felt forced and his character's arc was practically non-existent! Bryan Cranston was sadly underused and could have been more interesting given more screen time. Ken Watanabe and his team served absolutely no purpose to the plot, as he just follows the monster around with his mouth open in awe of the creature the whole time. The more I think about what the characters were "doing" the more angry I get and the less I like the movie because I feel like every human character wasted my time. The film also took itself way too seriously, and lacked any sense of humor or fun. (see Pacific Rim) The intention was well put in this reboot... but in the end, the script was not there. I really really wanted to like this movie, but was left sadly disappointed. Sad times.… Expand

But the problem is, that almost everything else feels like a filler because of it. Besides Godzilla and other creatures and their spectacular confrontation, this film has little to offer:
Characters are bland and uninspired, except Bryan Cranston, whose character had at least some emotion behind him. The son (played by Aaron Johnson) who is the main protagonist in the second act of the movie has none of that.. Mind as well be a faceless brick...
The film can be just split into three parts: first, containing Cranston is actually an engaging character study and mystery plot. After Cranston leaves the movie, interest starts to fall apart, mainly because of dull characters and the anticipation of Godzilla. Human drama wasn't important to me, because these people had no emotional weight to it (except the first act).
The third act is actually hurt after all that tedious teasing in the second act, but it is still enjoyable and is the highlight of the movie. This part saves the film from being a complete disaster.… Expand

Hollywood has once again taken a classic story and made it all about America. The trailers looked amazing but the reality of the film is a Greys Anatomy type want to be tear jerker about a family who is torn apart.

It was like someone said "hey, lets make an awesome Godzilla trailer,with all the best parts of the movie and then pad the movie out with lots of daytime tv quality acting and script writing to save money. Also, lets put heaps of Bryan Cranston in the clip but only get him on set for 6 weeks to get enough shots for a trailer because that will sell tickets. People love Bryan Cranston. He's so hot right now."

The problem is that the set up of the characters relationships isn't substantial enough, and you just don't care. I wasn't worried for the well being of the characters, and didn't really care what was happening to anyone in the cities. There were no moments when my heart was beating faster or where I gripped by bag of popcorn even slightly.

As others have said, watch Cloverfield again. That was a real monster movie.… Expand

The original Godzilla had a ton of satisfying destruction caused by the King himself. He tears into the city, and even in all its rubber-suited glory, it is so much more enjoyable. Don't go see this new film, just rewatch the original. So much better.

I think the big area the new Godzilla fails in is that it tries to focus on one guy and his struggles with the situation. The original shows us a wide mix of people with all different backgrounds and their reaction to it, making the whole thing feel so much more real. And then there's also the super awesome scenes of destruction. I remember what made me fall in love with Godzilla in the first place. America needs to give up. We'll never even come close to matching what Japan has done.… Expand

As a lifelong, 30+ year fan of everything Godzilla, I can not help but feel disappointed in what we have been presented after 5 years of anticipation and Hype.

First of all, Godzilla himself is glorious! The MUTOs look great, but I am still unsure of exactly they are supposed to be. They are imaginative yes, but I am unsure how such an alien creature can be a product of prehistoric radiation. They could have used some color or markings as well to make them look more natural.

The battle scene (notice no plural, because there is only one battle that you see more than a glimpse of) is fantastic, and is the only part worthy of the Godzilla name. His breath weapon was a bit underwhelming, but solid for an attempt at a realistic version.

The introduction of Godzilla is very lackluster. He just sort of shows up, and we track him moving along for almost an hour in the water. He finally makes his big entrance in Hawaii, only to disappear within seconds of exposure, literally. They should have really gave the audience more at the airport battle.

There is no terror in the eyes of the people witnessing this. The few shots that they attempted this, the extras looked like they were running for the catering truck for lunch. No horror, no urgency, no giant foot coming down within inches of a terrified populace. Godzilla did not spank us for our arrogance, not once; the MUTOs tried, but they were more concerned for with one another. When it comes to the Monsters' interactions with humanity, they were just doing their own thing that happened to be in the middle of a city.

Notice how first and foremost, this review has contained the monsters. Not so with this movie. They build up this story with the help of Brian Cranston for almost an hour until the writers decide "Okay... his job is done" and the rest of the movie just continues as if he never existed. His son Ford certainly doesn't care. Note to the writers: If you want the audience to invest in a character, don't make them almost pointless. It seems that this movie just tried to force character driven drama so bad, that they just shoved it in where ever they could, and forgot to include GODZILLA! If you think the big man had enough screen time, I have no idea why you watch Godzilla movies in the first place. I can understand a dramatic build to the reveal, but that was not a dramatic reveal. That was 60 minutes of build - to 30 seconds of Godzilla - to another 40 minute build to the actual part of the movie worth watching. One can argue that "it worked in cloverfield", but cloverfield was much more suspense driven from a POV that was built for the long reveal. This is the best 20 minute Godzilla movie ever hidden deep within 100 minutes of something else.

This movie could of, and SHOULD of been leaps and bounds better. So much potential wasted on trying to force drama. The awesomeness that was the creature Godzilla should have been more than a cameo in his own movie. I don't need tons more... Just a secondary battle in the second act, and a bit more instrument of destruction as his motivation. I can't help but feel like this lack of substance stems from the novice writer and director.… Expand

I appreciate the filmmakers' effort to create a more dramatic take on Godzilla. However, they forgot that in order to achieve that, they needed to make the characters interesting and develop them. Giving the lead role to Aaron Taylor-Johnson was a huge mistake, because the guy can't act to save his life. He plays just another stereotypical soldier with a nurse as a romantic interest. And if you watch the film because of Bryan Cranston, you're going to be sorely disappointed, because he doesn't have much screen-time; same thing for Juliette Binoche. Talk about wasting talent.

Technically speaking, the film is stunning. It should get Oscar nominations for visual effects, sound (seriously, Godzilla's scream is one of the best sound effects ever) and cinematography. Unfortunately, when a cool action sequence is about to happen, the story immediately moves away to throw boring exposition and cliches.

Sure, it's better than the Roland Emmerich train wreck, but that doesn't make it a great movie either.… Expand

I like how Pacific Rim came right out the gate and got into the monsters. Then you have Peter Jackson King Kong..which practically ran an hour and half until you saw the Monster. True character development is important but uninteresting character development can a weigh a movie down. I thought this was the case with Godzilla, it seemed that there were much more interesting things going on than what Aaron Taylor was talking about. He seemed like a very straight forward lead, where as Byron Cranston was much more colorful but was killed in the first 1/4 of the movie.… Expand

This is by no means a bad movie, but for how long the movie was compared to how little we saw Godzilla, I was left wanting more and feeling somewhat robbed. That being said, the scenes Godzilla WAS in (chiefly those near the end) were some of the best I've seen on the big screen in quite some time. The reason my score is a 5, however, has more to do with the awful cliched bits forced in throughout the movie. I realize this movie was a big nod to the Godzilla movies of old (which was, admittedly, well done) but that doesn't mean we can't have character development and deeper plots than: hero soldier torn from wife and child and does heroic deeds only to be reunited with them against all odds. Sadly are left with 10 minutes of awesome Godzilla footage and an hour and 50 minutes of shallow, plotless nonsense. To cap it all off, the money maker, Brian Cranston, is on screen for about the same amount of time as Godzilla... why even cast him at all if not to lure Breaking Bad fans into theaters if you're not even going to give him ample time to help drive the plot?… Expand

My favorite is still the original Japanese version (Gojira) and although I never thought I would say this, the 1998 version was better in many ways. A lot of the acting in the 1998 version was downright silly, especially the “love story,” but one thing that movie did was exploit New York as a setting and that was fun to watch – Madison Square Garden, the Brooklyn Bridge, etc. In this current version, Honolulu and Las Vegas could have been almost anywhere (we saw a lot of American tourists and some slot machines) and San Francisco was totally wasted (don’t they have hills there?). Also much was made of having quality actors like Juliette Binoche, Bryan Cranston, and Elizabeth Olsen, but you don’t see them very much (don’t blink or you will miss Binoche entirely) and a lot of what the others do is silly or insipid. On the other hand, we see much too much of Aaron Taylor-Johnson who looks dazed and confused most of the time (a hero he ain’t -- not that he runs away, but mostly he is either complaining or being ineffectual). I thought the monsters were good, and so were their battle scenes – and yes, the idea was good, but really do you want to go to a serious Godzilla film? The audience applauded when Godzilla finally breathed fire, but the applause at the end was tepid. In many ways, I found this film unimaginative and mediocre.… Expand

For starters, they barely show Godzilla. I know people say it was to build tension, but there comes a point where you stop building tension and just start pissing off the audience.
Even ignoring that fact, the movie is annoying. It focuses more on the humans than the monsters. That would be fine if the human characters were interesting. They kill off Bryan Cranston, the best character, early off in the movie. All of the other characters are uninteresting.
I was just very disappointed with this film. There is one scene at the very end of the movie that bumps my score up 2 points, but if not for that I would have given this film a 3.
Hopefully the next Godzilla film will be good.… Expand

All in all, there was an okay amount of action involving Godzilla. There was a lot more action not involving him, however. While the focus could have been Godzilla, it felt much more to be on a single soldier who happened to find himself in bad situations over and over, and still somehow live. Why do we need an American family living in Japan? Did the movie makers though that we wouldn't sympathize with the characters unless they where generic American stereotypes? Why a forced death scene? Oh yeah... because we need to have one of our characters being obsessed about his wife's death trying to find this monster, of course... Why treat the movie like it's "Transformers"? and like that I have many more "why's"...

Is not a BAD movie ok?... I know the directer is very good at working on special effects and it shows, the monster design is great and... yeah... I think I get why some people were calling this Godzilla "fat".

The original Godzilla movie was not just a monster movie, it was a tragedy and it shows in the way that movie portraits the situation and that is what I expected from this one... maybe I expected too much from it...… Expand

I just didn't care at all by the end. The first half or so was pretty good but It wasn't great. The plot started out somewhat interesting, but then it lost everything it had going for it. I appreciated the fact that Godzilla wasn't shown for quite awhile into the movie and that the movie did have a bit of a slower pace compared to most blockbusters. But whenever they had Godzilla on screen, the movie felt so silly and absurd and not in a good way. This is Godzilla! He's suppose to be epic and cool. And when he bashing the other monsters I should be cheering him on in awe. But instead I get some very hokey moments between the monsters. The whole battle at the end had no weight to it and bored the hell out of me.

What this movie needed were some more human elements, more story, and maybe not to take itself quite so serious because doing so made certain parts just silly instead of fun.… Expand

Despite it's title, this film is not about Godzilla. The focus of the film highly lies with the other two antagonist monsters and with the awfully cliched military-man protagonist. Godzilla has absolutely no depth whatsoever to hisDespite it's title, this film is not about Godzilla. Godzilla has absolutely no depth whatsoever to his character and exists purely to serve the role of absolute and total savior. He submerges for the first time in 60 years just to kick the bad guys butts and then immediately leaves as soon as the job was over as if he was just waiting to be a good guy. Some criticize this film for lacking action but I actually found that to be a great relief in the days where every blockbuster movie must spend 45 minutes of the film blowing things up for no reason. To discuss the positive aspects of the film, the CGI monsters really do look fantastic and some scenes of the fight sequences were genuinely very cool but what drags this movie down is how Godzilla is almost a supporting character whose only role is to save the day when needed. This film should have just concentrated on one kaiju, that being Godzilla. Other monsters should have waited for inevitable cash-in sequels.… Expand

Why and how is this film getting such good scores? Don't get me wrong its not a bad film by any stretch of the imagination, but it doesn't deserve 9's or even 10's! If there's one thing this film does right its building tension. At the centre of this is Brian Cranston's brilliantly developed and well acted character. However they kill him of so quickly he might as well not of been there... Which is a shame because he's the only interesting character in the film! Everyone else is a generic, one dimensional stereotype, devoid of any character or personality. This is made even worse by the fact you'll be spending 3 quarters of the film with them! And that's not cool. The problem is there's no payoff. While the last fight scene is good, it just feels unsatisfying, which then leads to a rushed ending that's obviously setting up a sequel. I would have lived with it if they spent 10 mins to touch upon the next movie and this was just a set up for the next film. Awesome trailer, lacklustre film. This is a film which is supposed to be about monsters fighting monsters, but seems intent on focusing as little attention as possible on the incredible struggle between two monoliths, to concentrate on aAwesome trailer, lacklustre film. This is a film which is supposed to be about monsters fighting monsters, but seems intent on focusing as little attention as possible on the incredible struggle between two monoliths, to concentrate on a decent, but far from original story of a 'man torn away from family, and suffering to fight for his family' tale. The craziest part of this whole film isn't what's in it, but rather, what ISN'T in it, primarily Godzilla himself. Like seriously, they mention godzilla a few times at the start of the film, but the next 40 mins isn't even about Godzilla, it's about some other plot instead. Godzilla then briefly appears, and boy when he appears for his 4 minutes, he sure is an awesome sight to behold...until we switch back to some annoying plot about how the military keep on angsting like a teenage girl before prom about how they can't kill the beast, and how ineffective they are, and so on and so forth. For me personally, this feels like a few parts of an A+ film sprinkled over what is essentially a B movie. Bryan Cranston is awesome(as always), making his personal tragedy felt even across the screen, and portraying his role as haunted paranoid in a brilliant fashion...which makes everything else look ridiculous when you see how unenthused the other actors seem to be in their roles. Even the Godzilla special effects are amazing, when they actually show them...but that makes the 90% of the film where Godzilla is absent(and he is absent, not like a 'i'm doing something awesome' absent, but more like a 'I show up, wreck **** for 5 mins, then return back to the sea for some relaxing swimming for the next 50 mins' absent) feel so incredibly dry and sterile. For the action sequences, I hope you enjoy watching 100 foot lizards wrestling with 80 foot monsters...ON A CRAPPY TV FOR 30 SECONDS(seriously, look at the movie where Godzilla first appears and the kid is watching TV, and that is how long it's shown for).

Don't be enticed by the A+ special effects or 20 mins of Bryan Cranston into looking at 60 minutes of essentially nothing of note. This is not worth your time, and should be renamed from 'Godzilla' to 'Walking with MUTOs', because the only thing this documentary(not action film) is lacking is a David Attenborough voiceover.… Expand

Set pieces looked spectacular and were very believable throughout the whole film. Bryan Cranston did an excellent job and in my opinion saved the movie from being a complete fail; he interjected feeling into the show that other characters struggled with–this made for a strong start. Cranston’s character did not get as much screen time as I would have liked to see and the protagonists roll was passed down to a much harder character to follow. At that point, about forty-five minutes in, the movie became a mess. I spent the remainder of the film trying to ignore simple mistakes that stacked up. There was so much potential in this film to capture the emotions of the people on the ground, witnessing thousands of deaths. Instead of doing so the makers focused on the monster movie element which just became another summer movie blockbuster. Passing realistic time was the biggest con in my opinion, everything happened way too fast and that didn’t help the pacing at all. The last half hour of the movie was pretty shallow with a cookie cutter climax that was not only unrealistic but a compromise to the show's overall potential and integrity. Despite the many problems with what could have been a more meaningful storyline, it looked great on the big screen and kept me entertained for the first forty minutes. In the end Godzilla was loud, flashy, and made out as a hero, even though he likely stomped hundreds of people to death as he made his way through San Francisco. … Expand

As someone who's first Godzilla film was this one, I was severely disappointed.

Fresh out of Pacific Rim, where the battles were intense and the chaos was satisfying, this one seemed lacking and confused in aim. The film suffers immediately with the cliched military man and his 'save my family' story we've seen a million times. The only good acting was from Bryan Cranston, but he's not even in the movie for long. Oddly enough, the movie seems devout on maintaining focus on Aaron Taylor-Johnson and not, well you know, Godzilla!? Every bit of tension in the film is either without a satisfying payoff, or is cut short with a transition to Mr and Mrs. Cliche. Three times too many you expect Godzilla to do his thing, but nope, just a tease. It's frustrating to endure as you are expected to just shrug off potential epic monster battles.

Many are comparing this film to Pacific Rim, saying the action there was frequent but the story was lacking and Godzilla is the opposite. I agree with this, but even in this regard I prefer Pacific Rim far more. It's a monster film, so it's fair to expect it to be about monsters wrecking cities and not whether one guy saves his family. The film plays with your expectations like crazy, ultimately driving you crazy.

To its credit, the visuals are amazing and the cinematics spectacular. Godzilla himself looks and moves exactly as you would expect. The new kaiju are sinister looking and cool as hell, but it feels as though they steal the show from The King of Monsters, especially when Godzilla is way too late to the party. In the couple of fight scenes that he's in you barely feel the need to root for him because the film's excuse for him being there is simply ridiculous. I feel the story is the worst part about the film despite it being the main focus, and the action alone fails to carry the entire movie.

Great visuals with a brilliant Godzilla rendition, but the story is cliched and a chore to watch, while the action struggles to generate any tension and even when it does it always falls flat. Usually I wouldn't recommend a film I dislike, but audiences seem to be completely split down the middle (even some extreme Godzilla fans dislike it) so I would say watch it as a gamble just to see whether or not you like it. If you expect action and epic destruction though, go see Pacific Rim instead.… Expand

When you have a larger than life character like Godzilla, you focus on him because that is whom your audiences came to see. The Godzilla reveal took far to long to happen, and by the time it did, he only gets a few seconds of screen time before the camera pans to a long scene with the human actors.

There is a line from Ken Wanatabe in the movie that perfectly sums up what the audience was denied: "Let them fight". It was that simple. While hoping for a slugfest between kaiju where Godzilla shows why he is the King of the Monsters, we were instead given a frustrating tease of a movie that could have been something truly epic. If the makers of Godzilla want to know how to do a Kaiju movie right, they should go watch Pacific Rim.… Expand

I've waited a long time to give my first ever metacritic review, so it's only fitting it be served up to an institution in film making which has been entertaining me since I was first born. Godzilla has been burnt into my subconscious for asI've waited a long time to give my first ever metacritic review, so it's only fitting it be served up to an institution in film making which has been entertaining me since I was first born. Godzilla has been burnt into my subconscious for as long as I can remember. Jung would probably call her (yes Godzilla is female) my inner Goddess, but enough about my personal relationship with a giant anthropomorphic lizard . If you are a Godzilla fan, you will move through several stages in the viewing of this movie.

First you will experience hope. The opening credits are creative and original and immediately open into Bryan Cranston and Juliet Binoche acting superbly. Characters are being developed, plot points are being leveraged, foreshadowing is in abundance. Then, it changes, (no spoilers here).

Second you will experience fear. The realization that all your previous hopes have been abandoned and you are actually, yes, stuck inside an American military propaganda film. I can't think of a more heinous skin within which a Godzilla film might be wrapped. At it's core Godzilla is a modern archetype representing a reaction to the military industrial complex and radioactive pollution. Remember all the model tanks being smashed in the original Godzilla movies? Remember how Godzilla was reawakened by nuclear tests in the pacific? Not anymore. Now it's all, "Yay Marines! How can I be of service to the United States Army!"

Third you will experience disappointment. Regardless of the political sandbagging, you will still want to see a big monster fight. You will, and it will not be very good. It will also take a long, long, long, time to get there, with 2 or 3 fake-outs. Also, if you enjoyed Godzilla having a personality, you can forget it. Personally I feel as though the "evil" monsters (MUTO's as dubbed by the military in one of the most painful pieces of exposition ever to grace a film since "unobtainium" in Avatar) had the most personality in the entire film, yes even compared to Cranston and Binoche.

On a positive note, the FX are absolutely amazing. The physics of the giant creatures are perfect and the movie never shies away from a long shot which is a real breath of fresh air in the current climate of cinematic, close-up, shaky camera antics. It really has amazing production values and the team behind the visuals/editing/cinematography should be very proud.

Some might say I'm taking this film to seriously, but considering the dark tone set by the film, I think I'm on point with it's shortcomings. And honestly, Compared to most of the sci-fi / adventure films on the landscape (Transformers), this movie is practically "City of Lost Children".

So take your 10-12 year old children to see it, the enjoyment they will have will more than make up for all the films flaws, maybe. Just make sure you wake them up when the exciting stuff is happening.… Expand

middlepart: holy crap. i dont know how they could destroy that athmosphere but it gets very boring pretty quickly. the movie is 123 mins long and they spend like 80-90 minutes on a soldier with a very flat character. the movie is already long as hell but they thought "hey, let's stretch it some more" by including scenes that did NOTHING to the plot.
1st example: that japanese boy. he got seperated from his parents at a trainstation(boy in the train, parents at the station. doors refuse to re-open). the "protagonist" tries to tell the parents that they will wait at the next station for them. that happened at daylight. shortly after it's already PITCH BLACK OUTSIDE and they're still in that one train. oh and yeah, a giant monster attacks and guess what: the train conductor keeps driving that train until he is like 10m away from him. he was clearly visible even at night. (ill cut this short now) all of this stuff just to give the "protagonist" some "character". but that sheet didn't get a single dent. he appeared still very flat to me. all those scenes were like 10-15 min long IIRC and wouldnt hurt the film if they were cut off.

2nd example: the dog. sigh. "oh no there is a dog leashed on a palm while a giant wave is coming". gj on stretching another 2 mins or more.

overall consists the middle part out of endless long (somewhat) "lone soldier" scenes. honestly it barely adds to the plot and stretches this movie unnecessary long. i sat in the cinema and BEGGED this movie to end. it was unbearable.

the endpart(last 20 mins) oh boy, THE part everyone was looking for. godzilla fight! yisss
very nice effects, very nice attacks. that part really shines after that horrific middle part

TL;DR
if the middle part would get cut to a minimum it would be an easy 8-9/10.… Expand

The Good: Godzilla himself was absolutely fantastic. When he is finally shown in all his glory, he is a sight to behold. Probably the best representation of the famous monster that I have ever"Godzilla" 10 Scale Rating: 5.0 (Mediocre) ...

The Good: Godzilla himself was absolutely fantastic. When he is finally shown in all his glory, he is a sight to behold. Probably the best representation of the famous monster that I have ever seen. The effects were top notch and Godzilla (as well as his adversaries) looked quite real. The story is initially a good one with a setup that grabs your attention. Cranston is great in a supporting role and Taylor-Johnson is adequate, despite playing a very generic character. The final 20 minutes or so of the film were outstanding.

The Bad: If you are hoping to see Godzilla duke it out with monsters for the better part of two hours, you'll walk away disappointed. At the 1:40 mark of a 2:00 film, Godzilla had appeared twice ... briefly. On two occasions, right when Godzilla is about to finally throw down, the scene shifts elsewhere and when it returns, the battle is over and we are instead shown the aftermath. Not until the film's final moments, do we get to see any full on Godzilla action. Godzilla's enemies honestly weren't very spectacular either and looked like rejected designs from "Cloverfield". With a long list of cool and interesting monsters that Godzilla is known for fighting, it is baffling to me why they went this route. Also, the military in this film were shockingly stupid, making poor decisions left and right. The dramatic elements of the film also start to fall apart halfway through as some characters are no longer around. Elizabeth Olsen was a poorly used plot device and brought nothing to the film. Ultimately, the film is a disappointing effort that had vast potential.… Expand

Годзиллы тут от силы 15 минут, при чём половину этого времени мы видим его полностью, а другую половину мы видим его хвост, тень, ноги, снимок, спину. Да и финальная битва как-то, нууу... неФильму больше подходит название "Жуки-убийцы"

Como pelicula de monstruos, se nota que Gareth Edwards sigue haciendo lo mismo que con Monsters, es decir, mas protagonismo con los personajes, desarrollándolos bastante bien, tomándose su tiempo, mientras lo intercala con peleas de monstruos y secuencias de acción y destrucción.

Desgraciadamente, ese el maldito problema del film... es LENTO DE COJONES, solamente te lo hace ameno las escenas de los monstruos y la acción, lo demás aburrido, rozando lo tedioso, que desgraciadamente es lo peor de la película, su lento desarrollo.

Given the director’s startling lo-fi debut Monsters gave us full-on creature rutting, you might fear that this is a daring director being shackled by a rating-conscious studio. Happily, the Brit director’s take on the Toho studio icon gives full reign to his ability to create compelling imagery and a knockout monster mash. It’s a shame, then, that the movie gets caught between honouring the character’s B-movie conceit AND delivering a let’s-take-everything-super-seriously approach de rigueur in post-Dark Knight blockbusterdom. If any film needed a sense of levity, it is one about a 355-foot lizard hitting stuff.

The movie gets off to a cracking start, a title sequence depicting nuclear tests, Darwinian theory, sea monster illustrations and redacted information all to Alexandre Desplat’s flash-and-thunder score. Yet, unlike 99.9 per cent of recent blockbusters, the film then admirably slows down to set up story strands of (chillingly mounted) family tragedy, anomalous seismic activity, frustrated interrogations, perplexed scientists and all-round conspiracy.

Edwards and credited writer Max Borenstein try their darnedest to legitimise the potentially hokey conceit, smartly respecting the creature’s atomic age roots by imagining the ’50s nuclear tests as attempts to kill off the subterranean creatures and peppering the movie with post-War On Terrorism reference points: jets plummeting out of the sky, carnage playing out on 24-hour rolling news, helicopter shots of refugees escaping to safety, the displaced seeking out loved ones in huge stadia. There is definitely no place for Godzooky in this world.

Yet underneath the patina of realism, Godzilla doesn’t have the story smarts to pull you through. Much of the drama set up in the first 30 minutes bears little consequence later on. The scene work suffers from logic lapses (where does Watanabe get his preternatural understanding of Godzilla’s motives?) or feels just plain fudged — a plan involving a nuclear bomb is unclear and unthrilling.

Edwards creates evocative moments, both small — a slug crawls over a toy tank — and huge — a submarine dangles from a tree — but he has less of a sense of keying it into a narrative imperative. The HALO jumping that everyone loved in the trailer remains fantastic but makes little sense when it appears the army can simply drive into the danger zone. If the movie had a different, more playful tone — Independence Day, for example — all this would be less problematic. But in the credible real world the film seems to want to set up, it just rings dumb.

While the characters may get time to breathe, they don’t emerge as a complex, memorable bunch. For all the great casting, the first-base writing never allows these people to emerge as anything but stock characters. Bryan Cranston is at his most Cranstonish as a man trying to prove a theory deemed crackpot, Aaron Taylor-Johnson is a colourless, stoic soldier, a criminally under-utilised Elizabeth Olsen is a wife-mother-nurse permanently stuck on the end of a phone, Ken Watanabe is a noble Japanese scientist who spurts homilies about messing with nature, Sally Hawkins his exposition-clarifying assistant, and David Strathairn labours as a one-note military man. Given, as with most creature features, the humans are bystanders doing practically zilch to affect the outcome, it demanded a more rounded, engaging dramatis personae.

This lack of personality extends to the main monster. In certain respects the Lizard King struggles to register as the star of his own film. Not only does Edwards afford the evil M.U.T.O.s (Massive Unidentified Terrestrial Objects) a better introduction — Godzilla’s entrance feels a bit thrown away — the malevolent, moth-like creatures also seem to get longer screen time and more characterful business.

Edwards’ film boasts great filmmaking, noble intentions and cracking monster action. Yet it never reconciles its B-movie origins — preposterous premise, clichéd characters — with its solemn, Nolanised tone. This Godzilla stomps but very rarely romps.… Expand

I think this is a mediocre movie. CGI and Music are great and Godzilla's design looks gorgeous, but most of the cast is awful in this... I don't know. The plot isn't bad, but it could be better. Forget what a Godzilla movie "should" be. The fact is, Godzilla 2014 is just a mediocre movie any way you slice it. It was a boring night at the movies. Something that's not mentioned in the promotion: there are actually 3 prehistoric, radiation-driven monsters in this bomb. Granted, it's supposed to be all about the creatures, but the situations are simply preposterous and the plotting is shockingly insipid. The effects are adequate and the action is average, but nothing about it is special. Aaron Johnson, who's haplessly thrust into the hero role, continues to impress with his chameleon-like ability. There's no humor, no logic, no suspense. It makes me long for the campy fun of the originals.… Expand

That was just baaaad. 2 hours long US military promo video, with few minutes of Godzilla which can be seen well only in final scene. Full of clichés typical for american production... Imagine Pacific Rim, but MUCH crappier and 1/10 of the fighting.

You wont' see Byran Cranston more than 25 minutes after the movie starts cause he dies, and not only has one of the worst deaths ever, but his son completely ignores his fathers death without a single word bout it the entire movie, but instead continue on with the crappy story.

They also spend 7/10 of the movie talking about and locating these Creatures taht feed off nuclear waste.

I didn't expect this movie to be realistic, but it's so unrealisatic and there'es so many crappy plot holes I was surprised they released it, espeically ecause 99% of the scenes seem drawn out and add absolutley nothing to the story.
Atleast great, and I do mean great action tries to help save this film, but it only comes in the lsat 15-20 minutes and by then it's way too late.

Also why the hell does Godzilla create a Tsanmi when hes coming (durriing Hawaia), but the next 5 times doesnt cause any
I could desect this video into a millin pieces.
his is the biggest disappointment I've ever all year. Perhps worst movie of the year.
Not only is Godzilla a cameo in his own film, they show his villian (not oe of his recognizable villians) atleast 5 times more then they do him.

If you wanna see 10 minutes of fighting watch the final 20 minutes, that's the only part of the film worth watching. Watch it and you'll see what I mean. I wanna justify spending money on seeing it the day it released ,bu It really can't. This film was **** terrible.r

The film was awfully paced, almost absolutely devoid of tension and undermined by a horrible script and ham fisted references to Hiroshima. Also, the removal of the only strong lead in the film so early on, left the last two thirds of the film with a cast that had no emotional push or screen presence whatsoever (Aaron Taylor Johnson doesn't exactly demand one's attention). Luckily, Godzilla and the other kaiju looked tremendously good and what little of them we actually see was fun. It's just a shame that everything else in the film is just so thoroughly boring and lacking in emotion and heart. A true B movie in that respect then I guess.… Expand

Barely a godzilla movie. He is rarely shown or talked about until the end. To much focus on annoying people and one dumb couple. Like entire cities are flattened. I don't care about this guys wife while thousands of others die.

The trailers use Cranston to sell the pic and the movie isn't really even about him, and he's in less than half of it. The monsters seem to be able to become silent and invisible at will, Godzilla's place in the film is barely explained (and poorly at that), the Japanese scientist pulls theories from thin air based on NO data whatsoever but which somehow turn out to be correct. Its a painful watch, and just seeing the Big G stomping around for a little while in classic form isn't nearly enough to save this clunker. A rental at best, but honestly you'd be better off re-watching a GOOD giant monster film like Pacific Rim.… Expand

This version suffers from a storyline that is prosaic to the point of boredom and it takes nearly an hour of dull exposition before the main event even appears. However, when he does things liven up no end. For all its other inadequacies, visually this is a stunning achievement. When the titular character and special effects take centre stage there is just no faulting the film as the craft on display is just amazing. Images like a crashed plane; Godzilla in the sea flanked by ships, A Tsunami, A burning train, shadows of the monsters aginst the city's crumbling buildings and Godzilla's face disappearing in to a pall of smoke are just a few of the breath taking compositions to behold. There are countless more, all exquisitely photographed.

All this good work is somewhat predictably confounded by the dull human angle and perfunctory screenplay. Also, although acting is secondary in a film like this, it has to be said that the performances
(besides a good turn from Bryan Cranston) range from the indifferent (Aaron Taylor Johnson) to the outright bad (Elizabeth Olsen). Sally Hawkins looks constantly downcast and on the verge of tears, in all probability wondering how she arrived here after bagging an Oscar nomination for ' Blue Jasmine', and Juliette Binoche appears pointlessly. Anyone could have done what she contributes here. Finally, we are left with a film that never orally matches its stunning visuals.… Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I have two big problems with "Godzilla". First of all, the human story does not matter at all. The ONLY THING that humans contribute to in this film is the awakening of the three beasts. After this, none of their actions matter. In fact, the human characters actually MAKE THINGS WORSE by trying to use atomic bombs. So you could literally remove the human characters from the equation, and not much would change.

Second, the actual meaty part of the film - the monster feature - wasn't executed very well. For one thing, we barely get to see much of Godzilla and his two adversaries. The only major fight happens in the ending of the film - out of a running time of two hours!

I also really dislike how they handled Cranston's character. He was the best thing about this film, and they just decide to kill him off early on to make the film easier to write.

On top of this, the human plot of the film follows a very formulaic Holywood formula which prevents us from caring much about the characters. Ken Watanabee literally spends the ENTIRE FILM with the same crazed "oh my god" expression on his face and the same crazy dialogue, while his female "assistant" is only there for exposition. Pretty much every character is this film is a stereotype.

Having said that, I did enjoy the backstory that they set up for Godzilla and the MUTOs (particularly the part about the atomic bomb "tests" in the 1950s). And watching giant monsters wreck cities was fun as well. But overall this film is quite disappointing.… Expand
