This movie may very well serve as the ultimate exemplar for style over substance. It comes across as indulgent and most bothersome of all - just downright boring.
The best thing about the ending was that it was over.

This movie is watchable and generally well acted by enjoyable actors executing reasonable direction. That's why I gave it a 4 (+1 for sympathy). However, the predictable, seen that, stereotypical plot/dialogue is difficult to stomach...after it's been processed at the woke-think sausage factory. The biggest knee slapper in all this is that Hollywood originally did much to push many of the very same stereotypes they now virtue signal tirelessly against. Expand

The issue is with its lazy writing for the characters and the annoying tropes that come along. They don't work mostly. The humor doesn't find its landing. There is a pan-cake delicacy that aims for the laughs, but it does nothing. With the annoying tropes come plot devices expecting viewers weren't predicting the same. That makes the whole experience an underwhelming ride in comparison to the surprises that the predecessor had in store while it laid out the plot in favor of the investigative approach. Daniel Craig playing Among us online? Okay let's weigh down on better introduction for key characters in the sequels that follow. Expand

The storyline is super weak and predicted, acting is terrible - it looks like all actors don't want to play in this movie.

Visually it's great to look at, but don't spend your time on this.

I feel sorry for Daniel Craig, who needs to be a part of sh** like this after 007. Movies like this are destroying the careers of actors.

Yes, I know it is Netflix, and you can expect nothing good. But I hoped for some changes after Wednesday.

And yes - terrible, unfunny ending. It looked like an uprising in kindergarten.

First, the movie doesn't really haveA lot of the people criticizing Rian Johnson for his political views in this movie have a very one-dimensional perspective on social commentary. I liked the movie a lot, but want to clear up a few things. First, the movie doesn't really have any thoughts on race. Multiple characters are of different races, none of which ever really bears sway on the story. I bring this up because I theorize that people claiming the political end of this film is to lambast rich WHITE men are assigning a very narrow and pre-conceived set of values to the film. Miles' whiteness never comes up and is not relevant to the story, and so I doubt that these reviewers are assessing the film in good faith, rather they are deciding that it attacks them so they can fuel their victim complexes and wallow in self-pity. It's quite sad, unlike this film, which left me feeling overjoyed and full of levity. Second, class commentary is not divided strictly by rich vs poor (or even rich vs non-rich). While that obviously plays a role, there is also emphasis placed on one's proximity to power, and control over labor. For instance: pro athletes are proletarians, even though they are very wealthy. The reason is because they are exploited by those who own sports franchises, and only have control over their own labor output. If Bezos took a day off, Amazon still runs fine. If all Amazon workers took a day off, production would shut down. Similarly, if Jeanie Buss took a day off, the Lakers would still play. If all Laker players took a day off, the Lakers would have nothing to present to fans. This is a very simple concept and is central to Capital, and yet every anti-Marxist does not, or refuses to, understand it. It's not a univariate issue, where your net worth equals your level of power or privilege. Rather, it is the extent to which you reap the surplus value of the labor you exploit (i.e. your worker makes something of "x+1" value, you keep x and give them 1). If anyone has seen White Lotus, there's a line where the hotel manager says something like "the boss exploits me, I exploit you." You can be proletarian in some contexts and bourgeois in others. What Johnson is looking at are the people at the VERY top - those who are not exploited at all (e.g. Miles), and who exploit those around them for sheer profit. That is to say: Johnson is not criticizing Miles for being rich. He is pointing out that to be a member of the bourgeois class, you do not need to have empathy or intelligence (which, many conveniently forget, are among the central characteristics of the first film's aggressively working class protagonist), and if anything you are likely selfish and deceitful. This is, as noted, completely in line with the message of the first film. That it is a good thing to be good at heart, even if it doesn't lead to success, and success through malevolence is nothing to be proud of. Last thing to note: even if Johnson is a rich white male, why is it bad to criticize that which does social ill? It is a core logical fallacy to disbelieve what you're hearing based solely on who is saying it. While any messages delivered from the wealthy ought be placed under scrutiny, it doesn't render them untrue. If Johnson's message is "it is bad when billionaire business owners exploit the system to amass even greater wealth," why is he wrong? If his message is "in order to become a multi billionaire you necessarily need to be ok with exploitation and mass harm of those under you," why is he wrong? If he says "it would be good to have different perspectives in the filmmaking industry," why is he wrong? Frankly, he isn't. As a movie, it can be a bit cheesy, have some stiff moments, and gets wrapped up in a little box all too nicely. But it's part of the fun! Craig is hilarious, each character has a unique personality (someone said each actor is just playing themselves and it's like, lol have you ever seen any of these actors act before), and overall I found it to be an entertaining and interesting movie. Might not change your life but should make you think a bit. And if Johnson is laughing at the wealthy, at least he's creating art - Miles (and, the sad sap we all know he's based on) isn't even contributing that. People must have willfully misunderstood the first film, where right wing millionaires were portrayed as bumbling idiots while the detective solved the case with a WOC pedestrian - here's he's added a new twist and more flavor to enhance and add flair to the message.

So yeah. Johnson is not criticizing the existence of rich white men. White men going off in the reviews here are likely just seeking a place to project their victim complex because they want to believe they are oppressed so as to gain sympathy. They can read this review and downvote it, but it won't make my words any less true, and it certainly won't change the fact that they must live their sad and hateful lives while Johnson's films inspire many for years to come.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Rian Johnson is now remembered as the director who destroyed the Star Wars franchise instead of achieving to be the new George Lucas. Precisely just like his Glass Onion character who will be remembered for burning the Mona Lisa instead of creating a new one - at least Rian Johnson has some self awareness. But this movie goes beyond being a response to his poorly received Last Jedi and to the downfall of his promising career, Rian Johnson also destroys his own franchise by giving us a mediocre sequel with cheap jokes and (already) outdated references to current events. This sequel only has one of those adjectives going for it (read on to see which one). Daniel Craig returns as the extremely Southern gentlemen detective (with a surprise roommate cameo). This case brings him to an isolated island owned by a tech billionaire (Edward Norton), who has assembled a group of mildly eccentric friends for a murder mystery game. Unlike the previous film, the oddball characters aren't especially fun or even odd. Writer/director Rian Johnson has loaded this script with too much dialogue…it's an hour before anyone dies. Even afterward, there's more focus on justification for the crime , instead of action or even interaction. Since the locale is new, it's provides some opportunities for stylish design. Otherwise, this sequel is too talky, rather slow and lacks many surprises. (Look for the late Angela Lansbury & Stephen Sondheim in a brief Zoom sequence.) Expand

"Quandoque bonus dormitat Lennon". I had already forgotten the first episode and I already remember nothing about this. It may well be a "parody of a classic detective fiction and also a social criticism" (Francesca Lombardo), but it is even more "Agatha Christie reloaded" (Mariarosa Mancuso) at the time of the "decline of Western filmmaking" with its "ultra-binge watching in streaming" (Gianluigi Negri). A necessary clarification: when I speak of drift, decline, low empire, I'm not an inconsolable nostalgic. I would hope, however, that the new, the different, the change were also bearers of improvement.

Glass Onion is a story about how the world works today.

Politics, science, ancient and new media came together one day at the call of technology corporations on an island in Greece. They think and behave like they are modern gods, but are they?

These layers of the glass onion are the strata of the early twenty-first-century society we live in. Within which we choose our path.

Politics - driven by the capitals of technological corporations.

Science - obediently performing the weirdness of technology corporations.

Old media - magazines, TV shows, fashion - retreating from audience focus and transforming into Bangladeshi sweatshop factories. At the expense of - you know who.

New media - attention merchants, streamers on Twitch and YouTube, with rankings and retention as the main currency, measuring their value in the number of likes, views, hits in promoted channels, and the number of eyes and ears stuck to their data streams.

Technological corporations creating a new economy, claiming to control all layers of the onion, and capitalizing primarily on human stupidity ('we all laughed, but then the Crypto Kids app paid for that building'). Run by not the most enlightened founders (they are dropouts at universities), but well aware of how the onion-world works, how people think and behave, how by playing on their weaknesses, on their attention, on their passions, to grow the business.

Technology corporations influence these onion layers, convinced that they are 'agents of creative destruction'. They think they know what is best for all of us. They know not only how the world works but how it should work.

But Glass Onion as the civilizational paradigm of our life and time, confronts the simple schoolteacher who breaks the glass onion, showing all its strata that the king is naked. She is, unlike the fake strata of the glass onion, is the real agent of creative destruction, the disruptor of the status quo.

In addition, Johnson predicted the killing of Twitter by the real world famous technological entrepreneur (you should know him). And he even named a hidden, underlying reason - the desire to limit the attacker's uncomfortable information flows.

Interesting analogies, an original view of the world in which we realize ourselves today. Thank you very much, Rian Johnson, for a sober and insightful look at the society we live in, hidden beneath layers of gripping detective.

I can give you the thing that lacking about Glass Onion compare to the first Knives Out, from the lack of year release and what i mean is that Glass Onion fills with these whole COVID situation that i feel it was too late and it will works if it's 2020 or early to middle of 2021, we are in late 2022 and that whole thing doesn't really matter anymore isn't it, so when i see that i just feel a bit weird and i know all of it is already been shot during the heights of pandemic and fine they just put in it still and really at in the end it's only just one tiny bit of a nit picky that it's not fatal at all, another lacking thing is for me the originality of the Whodunnit, the first Knives Out was genius because Rian Johnson isn't just make another Whodunnit film with the same type of way, there is still a hole in a hole of the donut Benoit Blanc said, and that is just genius and of course the whole thing that Ana De Armas character been said and witness too, Glass Onion did the usual Whodunnit way and it is lacking some originality there because it does fills like another Whodunnit in terms of the way, and probably the last thing that i don't think was really a bad thing but if the first Knives Out really does like a movie that deserve to be release in the theater, Glass Onion feels like a movie or a sequel that deserve to just be release in Netflix, enough with all the lacking stuff, if i can give you quite a lot of thing that lacking for this one compare to the first one, i can also give you a ton of reason why Glass Onion is still a brilliant film, yes it does feels like a plot twist, i still love Glass Onion and i did still think it is still a great sequel, lacking in originality? Fine but i cannot lie on how much i still enjoy the film and it is also a wider story than the first one, how about the performance? I love it, all the performance was great, all the characters at least for the most part was great, loved the location and of course the place or more of like a freakin palace, still have some of that fascinating and incredible Rian Johnson shot, and i think what i found fascinating about the first one is how they solved it, in Glass Onion what i found fascinating is really how it all came down, the phasing, and the chronological order of the story was perfect and amazing and it works, i enjoy Glass Onion from the beginning till the end, all the lacking stuff i may wrote it long but it's not really fatal, and the rest was still enjoyable, entertaining, and solid, a perfect word to describe the first Knives Out for me was "Fascinating", Glass Onion was more on the "Fun" word and overall Glass Onion was still a great sequel.

I expect if you turn off your brain and don't mind it wastes the first hour on almost nothing and then not realising the 'Worlds Greatest Detective' discounted 50% of the people on the island from the suspect pool, including somewhat strangely the obvious prime suspect, who it turns out to be, then you will probably have an ace time.

Not even in the same universe of quality as Knives Out

Just like Miles Bron (Edward Norton’s character ) is using money to mask his deficiencies, Rian Johnson did the same with this sequel. The movie is relying too much on special effects and glamorous sets allowing for the story to suffer. The first third is interesting and promising. There is a cleaver solve ,early in the film, made by detective Benoit Blanc. However, shortly after that scene, everything turns into never-ending flashbacks. Second half is less engaging and repetitive allowing us to know exactly who did it one hour before the end. From that moment on it felt like someone is trying to tell you something you already know. I think that the third sequel they are preparing should be made on a much lesser budget that would challenge writing and story structure instead of focusing on explosions. Expand

Although some of the charm of Rian Johnson’s whodunit style has worn off given it was already used in the first film, Glass Onion provides a vastly different story structure, setting, and cast of characters, all acted superbly (especially Janelle Monae, who truly showed her acting chops can match the power of her songwriting). The film also ends up being equally funny, if not funnier, than the first one, as well as equally a great time. It’s none other than Benoit Blanc (Daniel Craig). Now in Greece, Detective Blanc investigates a new murder with a whole new bunch of suspects.

Eccentric billionaire Miles Bron (Edward Norton) invites his dearest friends to his private island for a murder mystery weekend and sure wouldn’t you know it, an actual murder happens. Again you’re presented with a bunch of awful characters all with unique motives and it’s up to the world’s greatest detective to solve the case. With Knives Out director Rian Johnson showed cinema audiences what could be done with the whodunit genre. Highly entertaining, immensely funny and packed full of enough twists and red herrings to keep you engaged, and ensure you enjoy yourself while the mystery unfold.

Knives Out revived the whodunit genre and since 2019 there has been an increase in murder mystery movies, not all of which have been great let’s be honest. Yet it’s a genre that when done right it’s a real crowd pleaser and Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery is just as entertaining as its predecessor. The set-up takes a while to kick off, with a murder mystery the murder should generally happen in the first act and with Glass Onion it happens a bit later than expected, but the Knives Out franchise seems to continually push the boundaries of the whodunit genre and experiments with the rules.

Although I preferred the story in the first Knives Out movie, the sequel has enough laughs and suspense to keep you on the edge of your seat while the different layers of the story unfolds. Each new twist reels you deeper and deeper into the mystery. The script is filled with humour and very clearly drawing from real life events within the last three years. Very topical but most importantly it has another brilliant performance from Daniel Craig as Benoit Blanc. It really is a joy to see him again onscreen in a non James Bond role. I really enjoyed this and look forward to another instalment from Rian Johnson and Daniel Craig.

Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery is another enjoyable and entertaining murder mystery. Unfortunately Netflix bought the rights to the franchise and it was only in cinemas for a week, a completely missed opportunity to let this run in cinemas for longer. It’s really better suited to see with a crowd but for anyone who didn’t manage to see it on the big screen it’s available to stream at home from December 23rd. Highly recommended and a definite must see for fans of Knives Out.

If a joke has already been told on other occasions and with more grace, in these cases it cannot really be said that he who laughs last laughs best, no, here the one who made you laugh first wins.

Knives Out didn't try anything new when it was released two years ago, but the film had a very strong identity, as well as a killer cast that, despite their small interventions, all left their mark.

That doesn't happen with Glass Onion, and yes, I am fully aware that everything rests on our criteria, but I felt that, in this installment neither the mystery, nor the characters had the same plot weight of its predecessor, which I found quite conflicting because no matter how hard I tried I couldn't immerse myself in the plot in the same way.

It's an entertaining film, if expectations cease in the comparisons, because Glass Onion may not be a waste, but against its predecessor, it loses out in every situation.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Knives Out was a solid 8/10. Great mystery and very fun. Beautiful setting with the manor in autumn. Glass Onion is more of the same, but throws in politics and wokeness here and there. All straight white men are bad. They made one character gay, when there was no indication of that before. Powerful black leading woman that we must be in awe over for no apparent reason. CNN and Fauci on TV. Stupid, buff, straight white man that lives with his mother and reeks of toxic masculinity (spoiler alert: He is the first to die). It's very clear what they were trying to go for. But the mystery itself was still fun to watch unfold. It's a well done story and the setting is cool. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The story goes like this:

One day, a very talented, genius young woman, with great social skills, great knowledge and wisdom and without any flaws, comes up with a brilliant business idea, which she puts down on a napkin from her preferred bar. She proceeds to build in record time such a successful business venture that makes her and her associate billionaires and their friends very successful and famous people. Let's call her associate the evil dude.

Her friends and the evil dude are all greedy and one day the evil dude decides to invest the company's money in a dubious McGuffin which is basically a super concentrated hydrogen thing that can generate a lot of electricity, but it apparently has serious flaws because it's very combustible. So instead of a realistic approach, the story takes us to an obtuse turn of events, as the bright woman decides to kick the evil dude out of business because using the McGuffin is evil, but the deal turns sour after he gets all their circle of friends to lie in court and somehow claim the whole business solely to himself based on the pretence that he wrote the basic business concept in the infamous napkin instead of her. Somehow that works and she is left disgraced and alone. At that point she finds the napkin and to prove it she sends a photograph via email to her identical twin sister. Now, of course, the email somehow is common knowledge, so the evil dude tracks her down and kills her, poor thing.

That's all explained in the second half of the film in flashbacks, now we get to the story as presented from the beginning:

This evil dude invites his friends to an isolated island for the weekend, and he is surprised to see that his old associate, that brilliant young woman, attends the event, along with 007. Of course, this is not the brilliant woman from the start of the story, she is her equally virtuous and noble identical twin, who happens to be a teacher and perfect person that lives elsewhere and is there to avenge her sister. Sorry, did I say avenge her sister? I meant bring justice to her sister. Anyway, the guy is obsessed with the Mona Lisa, which he borrows from France, and puts behind a very unsafe glass cage that can easily be opened. You can see where this is going.

OK, turns out that all the friends in the island owe their success to this evil dude, and they are all very toxic people. After a while it surfaces that the original perfect girl died, and one of the friends knows the evil dude killed her, so the evil dude kills him. Then he tries to kill the twin, just to make sure. But he fails, because she is perfect. Then she finds the napkin but he burns it. But it doesn't matter, because she breaks everything and sets fire to his palace, which is powered by the hydrogen McGuffin thing, which is everywhere, because that's how electricity works. That burns the Mona Lisa down, ending the nefarious plans of the evil dude.

007 meanwhile is basically tagging along, telling the brilliant virtuous twin his educated opinion on how things are and distracting the nasty people so they don't realise she is on a quest for justice.

In the end, the evil dude is apparently exposed, 007 and her sister's friends are at the same place they were at the start of the film, and she burned evidence of a homicide and a unique work of art. But hey, that is totally justified, because the evil dude was exposed!

When I walked into the cinema I was expecting some Poirot-inspired 'whodunnit' story, but instead I got this moronic tale, with shallow and boring characters, trying to pitch an unlikely reality where becoming a millionaire is something trivial and where normal rules don't apply and attempts the now-cliched Hollywood trend to spread the pernicious and false social identity ideology, which I strongly oppose. For these reasons I rate this piece of junk a 0 out of 10. It's rubbish. Don't waste your time.

Pretty much the same quality as the original film. Great characters, great acting and easily one of the best screenplays of the year. Rian Johnson is a creative genius.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This movie is a massive disappointment considering it departs from everything that made the original movie a near perfect murder mystery. The central idea of the movie is a glass onion, something that seems like it has many layers, while at the same time you can see the center clearly from the beginning. That is the premise they used for the mystery, but what they failed to think through is that just leaves you with a boring and predictable story that has to be carried by the over the top extravagance that ruins the immersion. While it is still a pretty movie, the scope undermines whatever pretty shots and cinematography that carried over from the original. More and more Craig's character felt like the only change from Agatha Christie's creation was a change of accent. Not worth watching Expand

meh. tons of coincidence and contrivance to further the plot. obvious humor that doesn't work. how these people ever come together to become friends makes zero sense.

Well-paced and entertaining murder mystery movie that doesn't reach quite the same hights as its predecessor.

I feel like the covid angle and the first 15 minutes or so are going to age a little poorly. Even in late 2022 it already feels dated. But once the movie takes off it is as fun as ever. Open to as many of these as Johnson and Craig want to make.
