meh. tons of coincidence and contrivance to further the plot. obvious humor that doesn't work. how these people ever come together to become friends makes zero sense.

Rian Johnson is a vastly overrated hack, and GO is borderline unwatchable. The cinematic equivalent of being stuck in a room with grating, preening morons for two hours.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This movie is a massive disappointment considering it departs from everything that made the original movie a near perfect murder mystery. The central idea of the movie is a glass onion, something that seems like it has many layers, while at the same time you can see the center clearly from the beginning. That is the premise they used for the mystery, but what they failed to think through is that just leaves you with a boring and predictable story that has to be carried by the over the top extravagance that ruins the immersion. While it is still a pretty movie, the scope undermines whatever pretty shots and cinematography that carried over from the original. More and more Craig's character felt like the only change from Agatha Christie's creation was a change of accent. Not worth watching… Expand

One day, a very talented, genius young woman, with great social skills, great knowledge and wisdom and without any flaws, comes up with a brilliant business idea, which she puts down on a napkin from her preferred bar. She proceeds to build in record time such a successful business venture that makes her and her associate billionaires and their friends very successful and famous people. Let's call her associate the evil dude.

Her friends and the evil dude are all greedy and one day the evil dude decides to invest the company's money in a dubious McGuffin which is basically a super concentrated hydrogen thing that can generate a lot of electricity, but it apparently has serious flaws because it's very combustible. So instead of a realistic approach, the story takes us to an obtuse turn of events, as the bright woman decides to kick the evil dude out of business because using the McGuffin is evil, but the deal turns sour after he gets all their circle of friends to lie in court and somehow claim the whole business solely to himself based on the pretence that he wrote the basic business concept in the infamous napkin instead of her. Somehow that works and she is left disgraced and alone. At that point she finds the napkin and to prove it she sends a photograph via email to her identical twin sister. Now, of course, the email somehow is common knowledge, so the evil dude tracks her down and kills her, poor thing.

That's all explained in the second half of the film in flashbacks, now we get to the story as presented from the beginning:

This evil dude invites his friends to an isolated island for the weekend, and he is surprised to see that his old associate, that brilliant young woman, attends the event, along with 007. Of course, this is not the brilliant woman from the start of the story, she is her equally virtuous and noble identical twin, who happens to be a teacher and perfect person that lives elsewhere and is there to avenge her sister. Sorry, did I say avenge her sister? I meant bring justice to her sister. Anyway, the guy is obsessed with the Mona Lisa, which he borrows from France, and puts behind a very unsafe glass cage that can easily be opened. You can see where this is going.

OK, turns out that all the friends in the island owe their success to this evil dude, and they are all very toxic people. After a while it surfaces that the original perfect girl died, and one of the friends knows the evil dude killed her, so the evil dude kills him. Then he tries to kill the twin, just to make sure. But he fails, because she is perfect. Then she finds the napkin but he burns it. But it doesn't matter, because she breaks everything and sets fire to his palace, which is powered by the hydrogen McGuffin thing, which is everywhere, because that's how electricity works. That burns the Mona Lisa down, ending the nefarious plans of the evil dude.

007 meanwhile is basically tagging along, telling the brilliant virtuous twin his educated opinion on how things are and distracting the nasty people so they don't realise she is on a quest for justice.

In the end, the evil dude is apparently exposed, 007 and her sister's friends are at the same place they were at the start of the film, and she burned evidence of a homicide and a unique work of art. But hey, that is totally justified, because the evil dude was exposed!

When I walked into the cinema I was expecting some Poirot-inspired 'whodunnit' story, but instead I got this moronic tale, with shallow and boring characters, trying to pitch an unlikely reality where becoming a millionaire is something trivial and where normal rules don't apply and attempts the now-cliched Hollywood trend to spread the pernicious and false social identity ideology, which I strongly oppose. For these reasons I rate this piece of junk a 0 out of 10. It's rubbish. Don't waste your time.… Expand

This one was going pretty well fromt the start but then they´re started working with flashbacks. Going back and fourth and using one of **** tools of story telling. Despite the massive pacing issues from this point on. The first movie at least got some relatable characters or story parts but in this movie you can't relate to a single thing. This movie just looks like a big money show off. The last half hour is just boring, disturbing and not even the logical end of the story. If the two main characters would just have lost the game, it could have been still a good movie. But moving it to a happy end, not breaking the viewers expectations even once in the whole movie, is just bad writing. I think they had no final ending at all and decided to use pretty bad cgi to impress people who don't know any better. Hopefully there will be another movie with Daniel Craig as Benoit Blanc because this role is made for him. But they clearly should do some more work on the story and not the style. First movie had both but it was only good because there was also a good story with substance behind the style.… Expand

It's the exact same movie as the first - which I loved, but don't wish this could have been more (or at least different). The main character literally calls the plot of the movie dumb, in an incredibly meta moment of the film, and people cheered it to be a triumph. It was lazy and made no sense in the end.

Nobody likely cares, but I think there was a better movie that could have been and it really sours this movie as a wasted opportunity...

Andi should have been the villain. You don't have to change her backstory. Miles and everyone stole her idea and blocked her out. However, a napkin is hardly evidence of this. So, she spends years with hate, watching these people get rich off her ideas. She receives the puzzle box from Miles - which she destroys with a hammer - and this sets her plan in motion. Andi pretends to be her own twin and the movie plays out almost exactly as it already does. Her goal is to kill Miles, framing Duke for the murder, except her plan is foiled when Duke ends up drinking the poison in Miles' glass. No stupid miracle with the thin notebook stopping a bullet or hot sauce fake blood. Instead, contrary to Knives Out, Benoit actually misses this one - until the very end where she makes one critical mistake (it would be funny - given how much Craig has said to struggle with his southern accent - if her accent gave her away). He realizes it was Andi and although he gets credit for stopping her plan, he is distraught because his blindness for the damsel in distress - stemming from his experience in Knives Out - led to the death of an innocent man. This would have been the perfect place to leave Benoit for the inevitable end to the trilogy (or threequel if they continue to milk this dry). Self-doubting and unsure. Glass Onion would have been the antithesis to everything Knives Out got right and would have been far better, in my opinion.… Expand

A waste of time. I thought this was going to be at least entertaining, but after an hour of pablem and ring around the mystery idiocy, I just stopped watching. I know they were all supposed to be unlikable, but still they all were. And so - so what. Why do we care about these people? And if you break it down, the plot is the most obvious person killing the most obvious person in a predicable way. Perry Mason gets 10X more done in an hour. What was the mystery? Soap Opera dramatics among the cast is not a mystery. And the end, what is the message - if you can't put the rich guy in jail, at least you can break all his stuff? Is breaking things how you end a mystery story? Have we decided that audiences are too stupid to get detective work, so we just end it with "things blowing up real good."… Expand

This movie may very well serve as the ultimate exemplar for style over substance. It comes across as indulgent and most bothersome of all - just downright boring.

The ending is so obvious, some parts are just stupid and don't make any sense. This is NOT a clever detective film! It's a film about a really stupid billionaire and his fake friends. The first 20 min are great!

And 'Glass Onion' tries even harder than its predecessor to make some kind of political statement about class and race, coming off even more ham-fisted (which was the first film's biggest fault). Every character is an unrealistic, unbelievable cliché and caricature. And Benoit Blanc's flamboyance is dialed up to eleven, making it just a distraction. I only saw this in theaters because there was nothing else. I should have probably just waited until it came out on Netflix. Or better yet, not see it period.… Expand

I expect if you turn off your brain and don't mind it wastes the first hour on almost nothing and then not realising the 'Worlds Greatest Detective' discounted 50% of the people on the island from the suspect pool, including somewhat strangely the obvious prime suspect, who it turns out to be, then you will probably have an ace time.

Started of interesting but lost my interest after basically 1 hour. Not even close to the quality of the first one. My wife enjoyed it more, so we did finish watching it. But if it was up to me, i would have turned it off.

A pretty mediocre affair with the usual in jokes, mockery sneering and ham fisted social commentary. But really nice wardrobe and sets. Yeah, whatever, but they burnt the Mona Lisa. WtF? The hero burnt the Mona Lisa and it's supposed to be cool. WTaF? Horrendous. What's going to happen in the next movie? Killing puppies?
And they could have just have hired an actor from the Southern United States with a natural accent instead of Daniel Craig. There's tons of them. Sad and pathetic… Expand

There is a pan-cake delicacy that aims for the laughs, but it does nothing. With the annoying tropes come plot devices expecting viewers weren't predicting the same. That makes the whole experience an underwhelming ride in comparison to the surprises that the predecessor had in store while it laid out the plot in favor of the investigative approach. Daniel Craig playing Among us online? Okay let's weigh down on better introduction for key characters in the sequels that follow.… Expand

KO is twisting and turning all the way to the end, but GO seems to have only one major twist and it isn't that great. I was hoping for a counter-twist, but there isn't any. 2) Edward Norton is an irritating character and most of the others are not much better. Unlike KO, there is no true likeable characters to root for. 3) The mystery isn't great, the detective just solves the mystery without much surprise and the ending is uninspiring. How would the different age groups rate this: Children: They won't get it. Teens: Boring. Young adults: Meh. Medium-age adults: Meh. Older adults: Don't care about these people. My rating: 3/5 (no half scores). Save your money and watch it on TV.… Expand

Another thing is that the big, mid-movie plot twist doesn't make any sense. It also doesn't help that all of the characters are just unlikable. None of them have any redeeming qualities or the depth of humanity that De Armas and Plummer conveyed in the first one, and by the end you just want the story to get it over with which is kind of the way Benoit Blanc acts like if one were to be honest. Also, no spoilers, but lets just say some of the characters didn’t deserve the ending they got. I’d rate it a C at best and would not go to a theater to see this.… Expand

Knives Out was a well-told whodunnit, suspenseful, amusing, just this side (the right side) of clever. The characters were interesting, and in the case of Daniel Craig, cast against type to great effect.

Glass Onion was none of these things.

Disappointing because, for me, the movie starts out as a lot of fun. I expect and can forgive the "surprise! Here's everything you would have had to have known that I didn't tell you!" but the climax/resolution is long, painful and unfun.

After the cringe was over... we get a promising premise of a murder mystery game on a beautiful island with some great actors like Edward Norton and Daniel Craig. Incredibly boring and tepid beyond belief. Much like the first one it’s a mess of bad takes from Poirot and an assortment of horrible decisions. From the script, to the editing, the cast, just awful. Avoid like the plague.

Typical grade B trash that passes for movies now; checked the right boxes for lead character and correct "bad guy" = instant green light. Bonus points for fauci, covid reminders and masks; because those will age well.

I guess the play here is the plot and mystery is so obvious you would never guess it? The reactions and "tense scenes" were cringe inducing; guess it was suppose to be an obvious mystery comedy with no laughs? Odd bold choice... Just odd...… Expand

After his/her cliche introduction, one unbelievable event happens after another which lead too ... nothing. There is no epiphany to this story, it just ends.… Expand

Precisely just like his Glass Onion character who will be remembered for burning the Mona Lisa instead of creating a new one - at least Rian Johnson has some self awareness. But this movie goes beyond being a response to his poorly received Last Jedi and to the downfall of his promising career, Rian Johnson also destroys his own franchise by giving us a mediocre sequel with cheap jokes and (already) outdated references to current events.… Expand

Wow. Glass Onion is almost as non-sensical as The Last Jedi. Rian Johnson is truly an embarrassing hack who should be writing/directing kid's shows for Nickelodeon. And honestly it reflect poorly on all the actors who are involved in the nonsense.

The movie is relying too much on special effects and glamorous sets allowing for the story to suffer. The first third is interesting and promising. There is a cleaver solve ,early in the film, made by detective Benoit Blanc. However, shortly after that scene, everything turns into never-ending flashbacks. Second half is less engaging and repetitive allowing us to know exactly who did it one hour before the end. From that moment on it felt like someone is trying to tell you something you already know. I think that the third sequel they are preparing should be made on a much lesser budget that would challenge writing and story structure instead of focusing on explosions.… Expand

Unlike the previous film, the oddball characters aren't especially fun or even odd. Writer/director Rian Johnson has loaded this script with too much dialogue…it's an hour before anyone dies. Even afterward, there's more focus on justification for the crime , instead of action or even interaction. Since the locale is new, it's provides some opportunities for stylish design. Otherwise, this sequel is too talky, rather slow and lacks many surprises. (Look for the late Angela Lansbury & Stephen Sondheim in a brief Zoom sequence.)… Expand

Numerous plot holes (if he killed his ex why would he not bat an eyelid when she turned up at his island? Why would a napkin be such compelling evidence when they can easily be printed with any bar wordage on them?). The flashback scenes take up half the film, killing the momentum. The ending is also very weak. The tech guy (who everyone guesses as the killer as soon as he appears) burns the napkin then the detective just strolls away and the woman just smashes the place up and suddenly the dumb friends all change their minds. Started off loving this movie, really enjoyed character intros. By the end I was disappointed, the plot is contrived and overwritten. The best mysteries have an elegance, where a reveal makes you go 'how did I not see that?!', this is NOT that movie.

Knives Out didn't try anything new when it was released two years ago, but the film had a very strong identity, as well as a killer cast that, despite their small interventions, all left their mark.

That doesn't happen with Glass Onion, and yes, I am fully aware that everything rests on our criteria, but I felt that, in this installment neither the mystery, nor the characters had the same plot weight of its predecessor, which I found quite conflicting because no matter how hard I tried I couldn't immerse myself in the plot in the same way.

It's an entertaining film, if expectations cease in the comparisons, because Glass Onion may not be a waste, but against its predecessor, it loses out in every situation.… Expand

I was already skeptical about naming a sequel movie "A Knives Out Mystery" simply because Knives Out was amazing. It felt like trying too hard, which was exactly what this movie was. Everyone acted completely illogically, the character's motivations and relationships didn't make sense. Even Benoit Blanc fell prey to the poor writing epidemic once or twice, although he was the best part of the show. Overacting reigned supreme and I guess the producer thought if there were enough off-color jokes, attractive people, and beautiful CGI, we might not notice that the movie doesn't begin to attain to the title "Mystery".… Expand

To make it worse there are multiple key aspects of the movie that would never have happened (allowing a character to even join the weekend) without random characters suddenly acting as dumb as Rian truly is. This is a movie for people to pretend they solved something when it was never really a puzzle, so they can pat themselves on the back for finally solving one. That is the subversion of expectation, but also qualifies for false advertising. At least Batista did not burn his crotch (I hope) when he fired the gun then promptly jammed it into his speedos, because over-exaggerated stereotypes are so funny. Also, the heroine is an attempted murderer and a French death squad will be killing her for her crimes, all with the approval of Benoit simply because the detective is a moron. Everyone ends up in jail in the real world, except they would have died of course, if Rian had a single active brain cell.… Expand

I went into this film with no expectations at all, as I didn't even see the original either. Sorry to those that enjoyed this one, but 20 minutes into the film, and I'm struggling to hang on. It just wasn't entertaining. The script is average at best, and Daniel Craig just seems to be miscast, as I really thought his performance was flat. One other thing I noticed, and then confirmed only after I saw the film- is the attempt at social commentary. Rian Johnson and I would probably agree on 90% of political issues, however, I think he is thinking of the commentary first, and story second. It seems that his thinking while writing goes something like, "This would make a good parody of so and so hated politician, and boy, that would be funny in this story." It is too much of a sledge hammer so it isn't subtle at all, and that just makes it unenjoyable when the rest of the film is already struggling. Overall, I just couldn't recommend this as I thought it doesn't meet the hype by a long shot.… Expand

It seemed as if Johnson built this steaming pile with over the top cliched characters and settings in a futile attempt to disguise the fundamental failings of this movie’s witless writing. I might give this movie 2 stars if it wasn’t written and directed by someone who’s had a track record of producing much higher quality projects in this genre. Given his prior work, one would have expected something MUCH better from Johnson, so one star is all it deserves. Very disappointing. Barely got through it. Unfortunately, many stateside do not.
Like a good murder-mystery, I am on the outside looking in. I can judge you and objectively so.
Firstly, opinions are not equal. If they're word for word? Then sure. Otherwise, the repeated sermons and idiocy of the Right could just be summed down to one comment and a zero and you should not publish their reviews metacritic. It destroys your credibility by virtue of the fact that they have none - and no scruples. Pure freedom is abuse.

Anyhoo....

So, is Glass Onion good (rather than enjoyed because you are you a liberal or disliked because you are a sociopath trying to make America great and glorious, um, again... hang on, when was that again? You've been prevented from epiphany both openly and stupidly.. Then you worship your abusers?... Bit sad and pathetic, just saying).
Truth is though, deeply ironically, on this film, they're right, the Right, on this one and only occasion that I can recall out of about 67,832... Not the greatest strike-rate...
I mean, give a monkey a typewriter.
But it isn't bad for their reasons. It just isn't very good. For comparison, I would give the first one 8/10. Their (Right Wing sheep) low scores are a reflection of how much their defence-mechanisms have forced them to hate anything but themselves for losing their way and becoming monsters condemning their very own, but it would just go over their heads to explain that to planks of wood well past the point of no return.
But you are in an awful mess.... and the Right are to blame. Their voters are victims but complicit enough that all must now suffer the same fate. That is very sad, but true and now necessary.
Anyway, sorry if my opinion on all that upsets or angers, to alleviate somewhat any of your strong reactions necessary to conceal self-awareness, all I can offer is that it is entirely fact and only my opinion as it is fact. Rather than offer instinct and repeat brain-washings, I just have facts entirely occupy my opinion, then my opinion is fact.
So, unfortunately, or fortunately if you still have your soul intact... I am indisputably right. And you lose. I hope that doesn't upset the overwhelming majority of incel males on the Right Wing who angrily sit at their keyboards and bring down user scores on MOST occasions because the film has a 'massage they do not like" i.e. it reminds them they are awful. Ah well, suck it up buttercup.
Enjoy the film... or not. It is okay at best and has glaring issues with plot and contrivance that, as a writer, I find spoil the whole thing for me. I was also pretty sure who the 'killer(s)' was/were. Those are the faults.
The stupidity, racism , projections and backwardness of the sheeple on the Right are alternatively far, far more frequent and far less forgivable.

You're religious because you are 'conservative' (translation: extreme)? Then I would be very, very worried about that.

Truly an excellent movie and one I would happily watch again. This movie is almost as good as the first and I happily say it is my movie of the year.

Entertaining sequel but is it really worth all the money that Netflix pays for? For $400 million for its rights, it is definetelly a head scratcher. What can I say? My biggest issue with "Glass Onion" was how long it took to really get going. While witty and fun, I enjoyed 2019's "Knives Out" better - though I wouldn't steer anyone away. You'll have a fun time and, like the last one... pay attention!

Amazing movie. As good if not better than the first. I highly recommend seeing this film. Go see it in the cinema if you can. It’s worth it.

"Fun" is the main focus in almost every positive review when it should be exchanged for shallow. Celebrity name drops & long drawn out glamour shots are the musings of a middle school fan fiction writer.

Nothing else to elaborate on unfortunately - the irony of the name Glass Onion, when it's a 2h 19m shallow one note. To say this was disappointing is an extreme understatement. It's just plain bad.… Expand

Fun but forgettable. Not in the same league as Knives Out. Daniel Craig still can't pull off the accent, but he looked like he had fun trying. Edward Norton is always a win.
