Although some of the charm of Rian Johnson’s whodunit style has worn off given it was already used in the first film, Glass Onion provides a vastly different story structure, setting, and cast of characters, all acted superbly (especially Janelle Monae, who truly showed her acting chops can match the power of her songwriting). The film also ends up being equally funny, if not funnier, than the first one, as well as equally a great time. Somehow, some way, Glass Onion proves to be a sequel/spinoff that both differentiates from the original and improves on it in many ways, and is certainly worth a watch this holiday season. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Knives Out was a solid 8/10. Great mystery and very fun. Beautiful setting with the manor in autumn. Glass Onion is more of the same, but throws in politics and wokeness here and there. All straight white men are bad. They made one character gay, when there was no indication of that before. Powerful black leading woman that we must be in awe over for no apparent reason. CNN and Fauci on TV. Stupid, buff, straight white man that lives with his mother and reeks of toxic masculinity (spoiler alert: He is the first to die). It's very clear what they were trying to go for. But the mystery itself was still fun to watch unfold. It's a well done story and the setting is cool. Expand

I feel like the covid angle and the first 15 minutes or so are going to age a little poorly. Even in late 2022 it already feels dated. But once the movie takes off it is as fun as ever. Open to as many of these as Johnson and Craig want to make.

Not as good as expected. Once again I let myself be infected a little too much by the typical hype poison of social media. The film is wonderfully entertaining, the cast good and to the point. But it's all just a bit too aloof for me. Especially since I've never really warmed to this one: "Who is the murderer?"

Yes, the world renown detective with the deep Southern drawl has been enlisted to solveHappy Thanksgiving, Streamers! I am thankful for another Benoit Blanc murder mystery opening in theaters today and dropping on Netflix in December. Yes, the world renown detective with the deep Southern drawl has been enlisted to solve another complicated murder in the sequel to Knives Out, called Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery. Everyone was clamoring for more Benoit Blanc, and Rian Johnson has delivered. Here's whether this knife is sharp enough.

Once again, Rian Johnson has written and directed a murder mystery featuring Daniel Craig's brilliantly daffy detective, Benoit Blanc. Johnson elevates the whodunnit genre with smart comedy and intricate plot machinations. There is a sprawling ensemble that includes the following: Edward Norton, Kate Hudson, Leslie Odom, Jr., Kathryn Hahn, Janelle Monae, and Dave Bautista - along with other surprises. They are a group of friends who are drawn together for a weekend getaway/murder mystery party; but, of course, when Blanc is mysteriously invited along what was supposed to be a fun time among friends reveals something more dangerous lurking beneath. Murder and crime solving hijinks ensue. If you liked Knives Out, you will like Glass Onion. Whodunnit movies can be kind of formulaic and become stale. Rian Johnson found a way to shake up the conventions of the genre in Knives Out to make it feel fresh. The freshness that worked so well before is back again in Glass Onion. Even though murder mysteries have to hit the same beats, this plot and this ensemble have a different energy and point of view that keep the movie engaging and surprising throughout. The one quibble I have is that the first hour takes a lot of time to set up the pieces and introduce the characters. It's not slow per se, because it's still cleverly written, but the plot takes a while to kick in. As for the cast, Rian Johnson and Daniel Craig have found a funny and compelling character in Benoit Blanc, which makes the centerpiece of these movies very entertaining. Craig has both the necessary gravitas for a believable crime-solver, but he's just off-kilter enough to be silly without being ridiculous. I'll note that Janelle Monae is a standout. She gets to play both her poise and her humor. I know that Janelle has been good in other movies like Moonlight and Hidden Figures, but I forget that she has real movie star presence on the big screen. The remainder of the ensemble have good interplay and funny quirks that make each scene pop. Edward Norton is always fun in comedies and Kate Hudson has perfected ditzy without being a caricature. Side note: The costumes throughout are great and perfectly enhance each character. There is one costume reveal of a certain character that is so funny maybe only cinephiles will notice. Ultimately, Glass Onion has recaptured the fun and clever ride that Knives Out was. Daniel Craig's Benoit Blanc is still funny with his ridiculous Southern drawl. The plot and ensemble here are engaging and the twists make the whodunnit just complicated enough to keep the audience on its toes. If you can catch it in theater this weekend, get a big box of popcorn and enjoy the return of the Knives Out universe; otherwise, make Glass Onion a number one priority when it premieres on Netflix.

The backstories and development on the same are superbly done, the casting and cinematography is also notbale. However, not all the narrative choices make that much sense. The adrenaline rushed atmosphere felt at the beginning slowly fades away and the story doesnt become that interesting. The ending is quite lazy, but we must remember, the whole meaning of a 'Glass Onion' is something that shouldn't be overanalysed, and it relatively basic and simple. And so the movie lives up to its title. It's a very simple movie, not so much a mystery since most of the revelations are blurted out in one flashback scene. Nevertheless, it's incredibly fun to watch and the acting is quite good. Expand

Glass Onion is a story about how the world works today.

Politics, science, ancient and new media came together one day at the call of technology corporations on an island in Greece. They think and behave like they are modern gods, but are they?

These layers of the glass onion are the strata of the early twenty-first-century society we live in. Within which we choose our path.

Politics - driven by the capitals of technological corporations.

Science - obediently performing the weirdness of technology corporations.

Old media - magazines, TV shows, fashion - retreating from audience focus and transforming into Bangladeshi sweatshop factories. At the expense of - you know who.

New media - attention merchants, streamers on Twitch and YouTube, with rankings and retention as the main currency, measuring their value in the number of likes, views, hits in promoted channels, and the number of eyes and ears stuck to their data streams.

Technological corporations creating a new economy, claiming to control all layers of the onion, and capitalizing primarily on human stupidity ('we all laughed, but then the Crypto Kids app paid for that building'). Run by not the most enlightened founders (they are dropouts at universities), but well aware of how the onion-world works, how people think and behave, how by playing on their weaknesses, on their attention, on their passions, to grow the business.

Technology corporations influence these onion layers, convinced that they are 'agents of creative destruction'. They think they know what is best for all of us. They know not only how the world works but how it should work.

But Glass Onion as the civilizational paradigm of our life and time, confronts the simple schoolteacher who breaks the glass onion, showing all its strata that the king is naked. She is, unlike the fake strata of the glass onion, is the real agent of creative destruction, the disruptor of the status quo.

In addition, Johnson predicted the killing of Twitter by the real world famous technological entrepreneur (you should know him). And he even named a hidden, underlying reason - the desire to limit the attacker's uncomfortable information flows.

Interesting analogies, an original view of the world in which we realize ourselves today. Thank you very much, Rian Johnson, for a sober and insightful look at the society we live in, hidden beneath layers of gripping detective.

It’s none other than Benoit Blanc (Daniel Craig). Now in Greece, Detective Blanc investigates a new murder with a whole new bunch of suspects.

Eccentric billionaire Miles Bron (Edward Norton) invites his dearest friends to his private island for a murder mystery weekend and sure wouldn’t you know it, an actual murder happens. Again you’re presented with a bunch of awful characters all with unique motives and it’s up to the world’s greatest detective to solve the case. With Knives Out director Rian Johnson showed cinema audiences what could be done with the whodunit genre. Highly entertaining, immensely funny and packed full of enough twists and red herrings to keep you engaged, and ensure you enjoy yourself while the mystery unfold.

Knives Out revived the whodunit genre and since 2019 there has been an increase in murder mystery movies, not all of which have been great let’s be honest. Yet it’s a genre that when done right it’s a real crowd pleaser and Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery is just as entertaining as its predecessor. The set-up takes a while to kick off, with a murder mystery the murder should generally happen in the first act and with Glass Onion it happens a bit later than expected, but the Knives Out franchise seems to continually push the boundaries of the whodunit genre and experiments with the rules.

Although I preferred the story in the first Knives Out movie, the sequel has enough laughs and suspense to keep you on the edge of your seat while the different layers of the story unfolds. Each new twist reels you deeper and deeper into the mystery. The script is filled with humour and very clearly drawing from real life events within the last three years. Very topical but most importantly it has another brilliant performance from Daniel Craig as Benoit Blanc. It really is a joy to see him again onscreen in a non James Bond role. I really enjoyed this and look forward to another instalment from Rian Johnson and Daniel Craig.

Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery is another enjoyable and entertaining murder mystery. Unfortunately Netflix bought the rights to the franchise and it was only in cinemas for a week, a completely missed opportunity to let this run in cinemas for longer. It’s really better suited to see with a crowd but for anyone who didn’t manage to see it on the big screen it’s available to stream at home from December 23rd. Highly recommended and a definite must see for fans of Knives Out.

I can give you the thing that lacking about Glass Onion compare to the first Knives Out, from the lack of year release and what i mean is that Glass Onion fills with these whole COVID situation that i feel it was too late and it will works if it's 2020 or early to middle of 2021, we are in late 2022 and that whole thing doesn't really matter anymore isn't it, so when i see that i just feel a bit weird and i know all of it is already been shot during the heights of pandemic and fine they just put in it still and really at in the end it's only just one tiny bit of a nit picky that it's not fatal at all, another lacking thing is for me the originality of the Whodunnit, the first Knives Out was genius because Rian Johnson isn't just make another Whodunnit film with the same type of way, there is still a hole in a hole of the donut Benoit Blanc said, and that is just genius and of course the whole thing that Ana De Armas character been said and witness too, Glass Onion did the usual Whodunnit way and it is lacking some originality there because it does fills like another Whodunnit in terms of the way, and probably the last thing that i don't think was really a bad thing but if the first Knives Out really does like a movie that deserve to be release in the theater, Glass Onion feels like a movie or a sequel that deserve to just be release in Netflix, enough with all the lacking stuff, if i can give you quite a lot of thing that lacking for this one compare to the first one, i can also give you a ton of reason why Glass Onion is still a brilliant film, yes it does feels like a plot twist, i still love Glass Onion and i did still think it is still a great sequel, lacking in originality? Fine but i cannot lie on how much i still enjoy the film and it is also a wider story than the first one, how about the performance? I love it, all the performance was great, all the characters at least for the most part was great, loved the location and of course the place or more of like a freakin palace, still have some of that fascinating and incredible Rian Johnson shot, and i think what i found fascinating about the first one is how they solved it, in Glass Onion what i found fascinating is really how it all came down, the phasing, and the chronological order of the story was perfect and amazing and it works, i enjoy Glass Onion from the beginning till the end, all the lacking stuff i may wrote it long but it's not really fatal, and the rest was still enjoyable, entertaining, and solid, a perfect word to describe the first Knives Out for me was "Fascinating", Glass Onion was more on the "Fun" word and overall Glass Onion was still a great sequel.

Great sequel, building and improving on its predecessor, without following the terrible tendency that other films and shows in the genre take by simply rinsing and repeating the same formula.
The central protagonist, played by Daniel Craig, is much more developed and involved in the plot progression than he was in the first movie.
There is also significantly more humour, that is more topical, highlighting the ridiculousness of a range of current real world and internet stereotypes - in particular the ribbing of self-identified "disruptors" is excellent.
As noted, the movie starts by following the overly well trodden path of other murder mysteries and, thankfully, quickly diverges, bringing something a little different.
The movie makes much of references to the glass onion of it's title; something that is in plain sight, whilst still being shrouded in layers. Ironically, I expect the reverse may be true for some viewers, unable to discern and appreciate the layers of subtlety when presented with an apparently superficial plot.
It is hard to know how a future film in the series can address this; the lack of a sledgehammer denouement is literally what makes the films worth watching, but is also a significant challenge to being popular with part of the audience.
Overall, a great film, well made and possessing a solid sense of humour. Look forward to the next episode.

There are clues, false clues and twists that keep you guessing right until the very end. The visual esthetic is different from the last film, and that works well with the characters and themes. The ending is satisfactory. I highly recommend it. Expand

However, this is a follow-up that truly hasn't lost sight of its roots and/or what made its predecessor so great. Again, you're given a tremendously entertaining narrative here, which constantly upends your understanding of the given moment with each and every twist and turn. The character work and performances are all so vibrant and it's so good to see Daniel Craig back in this role. I'll be damned if we don't keep seeing more of these flicks and I think we may be all the better for it. Such a satisfying time watching this one. Expand

First, the movie doesn't really haveA lot of the people criticizing Rian Johnson for his political views in this movie have a very one-dimensional perspective on social commentary. I liked the movie a lot, but want to clear up a few things. First, the movie doesn't really have any thoughts on race. Multiple characters are of different races, none of which ever really bears sway on the story. I bring this up because I theorize that people claiming the political end of this film is to lambast rich WHITE men are assigning a very narrow and pre-conceived set of values to the film. Miles' whiteness never comes up and is not relevant to the story, and so I doubt that these reviewers are assessing the film in good faith, rather they are deciding that it attacks them so they can fuel their victim complexes and wallow in self-pity. It's quite sad, unlike this film, which left me feeling overjoyed and full of levity. Second, class commentary is not divided strictly by rich vs poor (or even rich vs non-rich). While that obviously plays a role, there is also emphasis placed on one's proximity to power, and control over labor. For instance: pro athletes are proletarians, even though they are very wealthy. The reason is because they are exploited by those who own sports franchises, and only have control over their own labor output. If Bezos took a day off, Amazon still runs fine. If all Amazon workers took a day off, production would shut down. Similarly, if Jeanie Buss took a day off, the Lakers would still play. If all Laker players took a day off, the Lakers would have nothing to present to fans. This is a very simple concept and is central to Capital, and yet every anti-Marxist does not, or refuses to, understand it. It's not a univariate issue, where your net worth equals your level of power or privilege. Rather, it is the extent to which you reap the surplus value of the labor you exploit (i.e. your worker makes something of "x+1" value, you keep x and give them 1). If anyone has seen White Lotus, there's a line where the hotel manager says something like "the boss exploits me, I exploit you." You can be proletarian in some contexts and bourgeois in others. What Johnson is looking at are the people at the VERY top - those who are not exploited at all (e.g. Miles), and who exploit those around them for sheer profit. That is to say: Johnson is not criticizing Miles for being rich. He is pointing out that to be a member of the bourgeois class, you do not need to have empathy or intelligence (which, many conveniently forget, are among the central characteristics of the first film's aggressively working class protagonist), and if anything you are likely selfish and deceitful. This is, as noted, completely in line with the message of the first film. That it is a good thing to be good at heart, even if it doesn't lead to success, and success through malevolence is nothing to be proud of. Last thing to note: even if Johnson is a rich white male, why is it bad to criticize that which does social ill? It is a core logical fallacy to disbelieve what you're hearing based solely on who is saying it. While any messages delivered from the wealthy ought be placed under scrutiny, it doesn't render them untrue. If Johnson's message is "it is bad when billionaire business owners exploit the system to amass even greater wealth," why is he wrong? If his message is "in order to become a multi billionaire you necessarily need to be ok with exploitation and mass harm of those under you," why is he wrong? If he says "it would be good to have different perspectives in the filmmaking industry," why is he wrong? Frankly, he isn't. As a movie, it can be a bit cheesy, have some stiff moments, and gets wrapped up in a little box all too nicely. But it's part of the fun! Craig is hilarious, each character has a unique personality (someone said each actor is just playing themselves and it's like, lol have you ever seen any of these actors act before), and overall I found it to be an entertaining and interesting movie. Might not change your life but should make you think a bit. And if Johnson is laughing at the wealthy, at least he's creating art - Miles (and, the sad sap we all know he's based on) isn't even contributing that. People must have willfully misunderstood the first film, where right wing millionaires were portrayed as bumbling idiots while the detective solved the case with a WOC pedestrian - here's he's added a new twist and more flavor to enhance and add flair to the message.

So yeah. Johnson is not criticizing the existence of rich white men. White men going off in the reviews here are likely just seeking a place to project their victim complex because they want to believe they are oppressed so as to gain sympathy. They can read this review and downvote it, but it won't make my words any less true, and it certainly won't change the fact that they must live their sad and hateful lives while Johnson's films inspire many for years to come.

This doesn't flip the whodunit genre on its head like the first one but it does tell a very entertaining whodunit film. When compared to the first Knives out, it starts very slowly and unfortunately doesn't have as strong an ending either. It is also lacking in the creative editing and cinematography of the first film. Even though this film has the same editor and cinematographer as the first film. However, the cast is outstanding! They all did a great job playing over-the-top archetypes of rich people. I also thoroughly enjoyed the mystery itself, which constantly kept me guessing. While this tackles terrible rich people again, it does explore it differently. It shows how Miles Bron's (Edward Norton) billionaire nature can have a grip on people and the mistrust it can cause. Likewise, it continues to have fun, witty dialogue and a great musical score that I loved from the first film as well. Overall, it doesn't hit the same highs as the first Knives Out but it is a great follow-up. I'm looking forward to more in this franchise! I still think it was a missed opportunity to call it 'Fork In Hell'. Expand

Brilliant!

My first film of 2023, which has started with a bang! I adore the original film from 2019 so was expecting big things from this sequel and I'm glad to note that it didn't disappoint - it's a cracker. I did, admittedly, predict the general gist of what was going to happen, though (in this case, minor) predictability doesn't always equel badness - like here, I was thoroughly entertained no matter what.

The cast from the first film are better, though those that star in this 2022 release are excellent. Daniel Craig is, of course, superb as Benoit Blanc once again, every single moment with him is terrific. Janelle Monáe also gives a fantastic performance, I predominantly know of her from music but with this, and 'Hidden Figures', she can certainly act too.

Kate Hudson, Dave Bautista and Edward Norton are the best of the others, though even the likes of Kathryn Hahn, Leslie Odom Jr. and Madelyn Cline are good value as well. Like its predecessor, it's very astutely cast.

The film is put together in high quality fashion, Rian Johnson & Co. did a great job - particularly with the framing of certain shots, as well as the music which is real neat. As you'd expect for a film of this sort, there are some nice little details spread across the well utilised run time. Like 'Knives Out', I know I'll be revisiting 'Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery' when possible.

It sounds like Johnson and Craig are up for making more of these, and to that I say bring it on!

Led by an outstanding ensemble cast, Glass Onion intrigues, peeling off each layer of the murder mystery with so much finesse and panache. Glass Onion weaves through its flashbacks and present storyline seamlessly, brilliantly infusing social satire, wit and humour.

The very nuanced portrayals from the cast is noteworthy, especially for Janelle Monae, Kate Hudson and Daniel Craig. The location, the cinematography, the direction and the score, all brilliant!

Dude, it's fun and keeps you glued to the story the whole time. What more can you cask for? Entertaining and who doesn't love Daniel Craig?! Would definitely recommend to anyone looking for just an overall great movie night.

An absolute pleasure to watch. The ensemble cast is terrific but the performance by Kate Hudson steals the show!

This film does not respect the quality of the previous one, but if evaluated individually it is still an excellent film, the only flaw is the ending

Hilarious, biting, and exciting. Daniel Craig and Janelle Monae are luminous together, and Edward Norton's physical acting alone is electrifying.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. A mystery film spoiled by political cliches.

I'm going to assume that you've seen the first one and liked it like I did. Why else watch this one although this could be a standalone film for the most part. This is a good film with a potentially good plot, but the film tries much harder to push a political agenda and an estut person will easily figure out the 'evil rich white man bad' "twist".

The movie itself has some great shots, clever dialogue, and stellar acting. Unfortunately, every evil character is some caricature of what the director Rian Johnson, thinks a republican is. One is tatooed 'F YEAH MURICA!' gun carrying dumb dumb, the blonde woman is basically Trump tweeting stupid stuff and not taking the virus seriously, Edward Norton is the rich white man who wants to oppress black people. Rian is not subtle with these characters and thus it is obvious from very early on that the rich white guy who likes to oppress black people and funds republican stereotypes has an evil plan to *surprise* oppress black people and steal their work. Were the acting not good, the characters would be laughably one dimensional. Rian, I don't want to know who the bad guy is after meeting him for five minutes. Learn subtly. The best is when you give these evil characters redeeming qualities so they don't become blaring stereotypes with evil intentions. You know? Like in the first movie!

The climax of the film is extra cringe. The hide-away virtuous victim holds the 'evidence' to lock up the evil racist white man in his face (like the first movie), and of course, he lights it on fire. I awaited for her to pull some clever trick, but instead she decides to just start rioting and destroying all of evil rich man's stuff. For some reason, the evil republican lackeys start to cheer her on and do it themselves. Evil rich white man of course wasnt smart enough to install a camera where he holds the mona lisa, so they get away with it. Rian clearly wants to portray a 'pro-riot' message for BLM. It just feels out of place and cringe.

It's really too bad because the first Knives out also had some political agenda but it never interfered with the plot or made the characters too shallow. The first one would get an 8/10. This gets a 6 because i was at least entertained
