The sky outside was so dark and cloudy it seemed as if the weather was personally making it his job to spoil any fun that might have been had on a public holiday Monday. I made my choice of movie accordingly – Girl Asleep was billed as a coming-of-age film about a teenager approaching her fifteenth birthday, not wanting to leave her childhood behind.

The film starts just like you expect it to. Our main character, Greta, struggles to fit in at her new school and rebels against her mother attempting to throw her a childish birthday party. The film then devolves into something bizarre, incredibly funny and jarringly nervous all at once. It is laden with symbolism that makes it relatable to all teenagers, and turns fears of sex, bullying, social situations and being yourself into something tangible.

Girl Asleep is highly stylised – Neo Gothic, German Expressionism and Surrealist cinema all blend to make it something that the average movie-goer could find very unfamiliar. The dialogue and cinematography style is deliberately stilted, vibrant and just plain creepy. As I was watching it, I was reminded of other films I’d seen – Moonrise Kingdom, The Babbadook, and Where The Wild Things Are. This is no surprise, as the director of the latter film also created Girl Asleep.

Though it might seem bizarre to even the most open-minded, Girl Asleep is a movie I cannot recommend enough. It’s one of the best films I’ve seen this year, and if you want to step out of your comfort zone, head to a Palace Cinemas movie theatre and go see it.
