This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. It's difficult for me to say this because I'm such a fan of most all of the actors in this film, but I found it laughably bad, boring, and riddled with cliches. Yes, let's drop into the 60's and focus on a middle-aged free-thinking father who is compelled by his personal progressive ethic to sleep with his under-aged daughter's life long best friend on a boat within arm's reach of his daughter so she can fully drink in the sounds of her pal's moaning. Ugh. As the Angry Samoans would say, "Poke Poke Poke Your Eye's Out!." Fanning and Hendricks doing the English accents didn't go down well at all. And sitting in the theater watching Fanning's character pitifully cry while her idiot father rationalizes his behavior is a bit of torture. Not sure why so many critics resonated with this film. EverythingThe titular teens live in 1962 England and do what girls do: try on clothes, try smoking, try kissing. Their inseparable friendship is inevitably tested when one falls in love and the other gets obsessed with the atomic threat. Everything happens with a laconic pace and dry demeanor (music is minimal). The cast is full of strong actors, but it's Elle Fanning as Ginger who is exquisitely beautiful and compelling in every frame. Other than that, the dull pacing and minor drama is hard to handle. Elle Fanning's outstanding performance is what makes you watch the movie. Otherwise, the script is a little dull, and Christina Hendricks has the worst british accent you have ever seen.

It's a simple movie, that really passed truth, Ginger is a powerful character, who makes more life every minute, thanks to the great performance of Elle.

"Ginger & Rosa" is a beautifully constructed period film, with wonderful acting from the leading girls (Fanning & Englert). It completely surpassed my expectations. It completely surpassed my expectations. However set in very specific thematic conditions (1960's, liberal values vs. tradition, nuclear crisis), this definitely is a character driven film. The plot is kept tight and simple as the characters further develop into their worlds, and perhaps this could prove to be the weakest point for some viewers. For me, its subtle but mature performances and sensitive approach to the girls' coming of age was completely worth watching. The Brit accents by the cast were done fine. ---Solid script and directing as well. Expand

Romanticizing youth a bit much.
Peerless portrayal of adolescent.
Enchanting cinematography matched by the most beautiful work by Elle Fanning (Oh!.. I am so a fan) and Alice Englert.
and in one word, lets just say it "beguiling"

This film could have easily been overly sentimental or melodramatic, but it is neither. It is unflinching in its ability to show the realness of hurt which is experienced by each character in the film, to one degree or another. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I found this film to be quite intriguing, if slow and meanderng plot wise. There's good characterisation and it does well at portraying the younger generations real fear of the potential nuclear apocalypse aka the doom and gloom propanganda surrounding the cold war.

As a coming of age film, its pretty good in showing the affect the culture of the time its set in (the 1960s), had on young adults, highlighting a high level of disillusionment when it comes to family life, questioning their parents (or more specifically the mothers) place, whether to look up to them and sub-consciously needing direction in their lives. The friendship between Ginger and Rosa comes across as a very strong bond - there are some perhaps surprising plot twists present, which helped keep me interested to see what would happen. Its not by any means a high action film or even, I suppose, especially dramatic as such - the devil is in the detail, you could say. It is a little slow and a little bland perhaps in a sense but I found myself enjoying it from the aspect that I think I could relate in part to the main characters, certainly in terms of being idealistic and having an interest in politics for perhaps the first time, plus being a bit of a daydreamer and wondering, or worrying, what the future may hold for humanity in general - yes I suppose it isn't especially 'light fodder' but there you go. While you could say that little real physical action takes place, I felt it really highlighted how caught up in such a changing time as the so-called 'swinging 60s' the then rather new teenage generation, found themselves to be. The characters are clearly shown to be quite clever and passionate, while a lot of emphasis is ultimately on their (perceived?) lack of direction, as they bridge the gap between teenage-hood and early adulthood. It is a very character driven film - I'm not sure there's a lot of content that really stood out especially, for me to comment on here but I did feel there was something intriguing about it, that made it fairly engrossing. One thing I was a bit surprised about, when I thought back about it, was the fact I barely noticed the musical score. I can barely remember it at all, which seems perhaps a bit ironic given its set in such a musically diverse time/decade and all that. I noticed on some shots, or scenes, that there were some particularly good camera angles used, such as when a character wrote a poem into her book, which is quite a poignant moment.

The ending I thought was a little frustrating, in that it leaves the viewer to fill in the plot holes and decide how things worked out for the two girls in the next few decades to come. I suppose in a sense thats fairly unimportant by the end, as the film has (I felt) made the point(s) it needed to make but I still felt a little frustrated by how open ended it was. Overall though, I'd say I enjoyed it.

Yes, I reckon I would recommend this film, although its a little bit slow and perhaps may seem dry to some, it seemed to me to be a fairly well made film with good characterisation and it has a thought provoking side to it (I admit I get a little fed up of saying that in nearly every review I publish, so I left that aside until now lol) which is obviousl good. If your looking for more of an action drama, then this may disappoint but if your interested in it in terms of it coming from the coming of age genre etc., then you should certainly enjoy this.

Elle Fanning is remarkable here -- her delicacy and quiet depth slipping through every scene. Elsewhere, the film is technically solid but unremarkable, lacking narrative profundity and subtlety.
