Ghostbusters

Kate McKinnon steals the show with her comic timing and along with the funniest cast, Ghostbusters is gripping and tight on screenplay too.

In fact, I only understood the reason for the delay after some reading: a contract specified that a new film would be released if the director and the four original protagonists agreed, and that agreement has never been possible until now. On the one hand, I'm glad that this has been surpassed, but on the other hand I confess that I expected something more: this film is good, it entertains and is a visual spectacle, but it has many flaws. For me, the most outrageous is to ignore original films. That is, I would have preferred to see a sequel which continues the story and takes into account the years that have passed, than a pure and simple "reboot" that ignores everything before.

The script begins with the meeting of two old friends, both scientists, who in the past were fascinated by the world of the supernatural. One of them remains connected to this and is head of a university research office, but the other wants to forget about it, and be regarded as a serious academic in the scientific world. However, the way they quickly bridge their differences and re-match efforts is far-fetched, and the film's continuation will not improve that: we have forced, unbelievable, illogical ideas and situations, ill-conceived characters, a constant and irritating obsession with gender issues and political correctness, which keep the quality of the plot below what we can demand. Because of this, and other issues that I will address, I am forced to rate director Paul Feig's performance as an amateur. He seems to have simply let things go by themselves, intervening as little as possible and demanding only the basics of everything and everyone.

The cast has several strong names, starting with the quartet formed by Melissa McCarthy, Kristen Wiig, Kate McKinnon and Leslie Jones. I really can't say something bad about their work. I think they did the best they could with the material they received, even though the dialogue is fake, the jokes are silly, and the characters are as dense as a cardboard. Jones is the better to handle it, in contrast to a sleepy McCarthy and an exaggerated, histrionic McKinnon. Contrary to what some might have thought, I don't believe the fact that they are women (in the previous films, the Ghostbusters were men) is a special bonus. For me, it's irrelevant, as I care more about character design and the good work of the actors than about gender issues, which only serve to polarize and use cinema for political purposes, taking the focus away from art and of quality entertainment. Instead of using cinema to make politics, empowering women and feminizing men, films should seek to improve their stories, give credibility and depth to the characters, bet on quality. Otherwise, the feeling that pervades is that cinema seeks to do a work of expiation or penance. Maybe that's why I hated Chris Hemsworth: in addition to failing to be a good villain, he's amorphous for most of the movie and has the intelligence of a canary. Neil Casey doesn't even deserve to be mentioned: his work is forgettable. I liked the cameo of the original protagonists, but I regret they couldn't revive the original characters as well. It would have been something more honorable and meritorious.

Technically, the film bets everything on visual effects and an ambitious, expensive, flashy and full of color CGI. This is something really impressive, and on the big screen it has a remarkable impact, but ultimately it gets tedious, excessive and turns the movie into a kind of expensive and noisy video game, an excuse for tons of expensive effects. The film misses the action scenes, which are absorbed by the effects and lack impact. The cinematography is good and impressive, but the editing was poorly done, and I think the cuts were excessive or badly placed. The soundtrack tries to honor the original by updating it, but it ended up making one of the most interesting theme songs in the cinema of the Nineties dull and monotonous.

I don't even think kids would be engaged by it, and considering the first joke in the movie is about queefs, it's probably not intended for them, anyway.

The four central characters were actually pretty good for most of the film. Holtzman was actually great in parts. The four leads did a good job with a script that goes from mediocre to bad in parts. The script is kind of bad, though the actors did an admirable job with it. Now, one thing that does deserve some criticism is the way the movie handles men. Just about every male in the movie was either evil, a jerk, or incompetent or stupid in some way. Literally almost every single one. I didn't really notice at first because I generally enjoyed the movie (except the cringe-worthy ghost fight towards the end) the first couple times I watched it but every viewing since the first it stood out to me more and more. This has nothing to do with the female stars of the film, whom I actually liked, but rather the script. Expand

The visuals were technically okay, but the bubblegum visual apperance is kinda crappy and anoyying.
The maincharacters were ... well not characters but female versions of Stan Laurel and Oliver Hardy. What made Paul Feig hate women that much to make direction choises that bad?

As many movies and TV shows have possed in this new century is that there is never original movie work, just reproductions of timeless classics that can never be made again. I also was disappointed at the idea of why are they making a movie on Ghostbusters with the original themes and stories just with a different gender of cast members. It's beyond me why the director, screenwriter or producer, could have done a movie on before they were the Ghostbusters or fans of the Ghostbusters who try to be in their image. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The fact this film is certified fresh on Rotten Tomatoes is worrying to me because the film was everything but fresh. I'm not a fan of these all women cast remakes just because they seem very forced and gimmicky. Whatever happened to organic feeling female lead roles like Sigourney Weaver in the Alien series or Geena Davis in The Long Kiss Goodnight? From the start it was clear the humor wasn't going to be subtle, witty or clever and that instead it would substituted this with over the top, slapstick, haha-we-mentioned-Starbucks-how-relevant-because-that's-a-real-thing humor that films seem to go for these days. The whole thing was very confused - the cast all seemed to be constantly vying for the "funny one" spot which just created this very 2D experience, there was no variation in character, the bad guy was completely forgettable and un-intimidating, the story was very "meh". The only thing that was funny was the fact that Chris Hemsworth's character only managed to get the job as the ghosterbusters' receptionist because they found him attractive! Can you imagine for one moment if it was the other way around? Alas, it's an all women cast so it's "empowering". I'd like to comment on the plot a little more but it was honestly that forgettable. Overall, a waste of 2 hours and unfortunately I can't use that thing out of Men in Black to erase this from my memory. Expand

This review comes from a person who is not a fan of the Ghostbusters franchise at all. I pretty much just saw this movie because of all the controversy that made me curious and there is honestly not much to say. The humor was not funny, but I don't really care. People really hate when the jokes in a film are not funny, but for me I just don't care. I would criticize humor if it was really offensive or inappropriate, but I don't see anything wrong with the humor in this movie other than it just wasn't funny. I like the all female cast and I think a new idea should have been made for them because like I said I am not a Ghostbusters fan so of course I would be interested in a new concept, instead of having the concept from a female led film inspired by the concept of a male led film which to me is interesting, but I am not sure if it brings much empowerment to women in the film industry as it could. Women can certainly do things that men can, but can also do things that men cannot. Chris Hemsworth was pretty much the dumbest character, but I think that was the point. The special effects were good and the neon colors were cool I guess. The villain had strange dialogue and made a very dull impression in his human form, but I can see that is exactly what they wanted. The plot was not too difficult to watch, but took a long time to take off. In my opinion, Ghostbusters 2016 was just kinda OK. There was not much to offer, but there wasn't anything actually bad about it. Expand

Improvisation can work in movies, the first Ironman was largely improvised and it's great, this movie is not.
If this movie had a real script written by someone with, well talent an all female Ghostbusters movie could have worked.

I have read comments about the alleged misogyny based dislikes of the new 2016 Ghostbusters movie reboot…
I can assure you that i am NOT against a re-boot, or a woman lead Ghostbusters team, but i AM against spending time, effort, money and resources just to try to duplicate a classic movie franchise - unless you give the team something better to fight against - and strive for - this time around.
Here's an overview of what a brand new sequel (NOT a reboot) could be:
A team of women Ghostbusters could, for example, NOT [like men tend to] shoot first, but ask questions: WHY is a ghost in disguise attacking us - and why now? Women are 'allowed' to show their feelings; use this too: at least one of the women is 'psychic'; she somehow 'knows' that the *apparently* evil ghost in disguise is actually an innocent victim - who wants the Ghostbusters to help bring her killers to justice.
The women would understand that the ghost 'stereotype' of mindless evil is wrong; *not* all ghosts are bad. Men might have a hard time with that concept.
See? Rather than putting down men, you could elevate women. And these women would have depth and purpose - not be just uncomfortable stereotypes who complain about a lack of wontons in their soup. The character of Patty could *seem* angry because she still has PTSD from her prior career in the US Army during our war with Iraq. So the film could show growth and improvement of the women characters.

I saw the movie (So i'm not someone who critic a movie than i didn't watch, like the writters & producer accuse people). It’s bad written. It’s just a vessel, an excuse, to make men look like crap & stupid. To make women look like awesome even if their acting is bad. Only Kate McKinnon play nice in this movie but it’s not enough to save the movie sadly. Even the “evil” guy is bad written. The "background" characters act like vegetables, they are just here to answer to the main characters, they have no mind of their own. And the story is pretty bad. They can say what they want about people making critic without seeing the movie, the fact is if you watch it, it’s even worse. The movie could have been better without all those feminist crap. Making a “normal” movie in hollywood seem difficult in modern times.
I really regret all those insane sexist message. I'm watching movie to relax not to see hollywood pepper me with politics fights.

When i see the choose they made to make this movie, i'm not surprise to see than the movie failed. They deserve what they get. They were lazy and decide freely to bring feminist into a movie. They decide to release a poor movie. That's totally their fault.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This is a terrible movie, where do I begin. First off nobody asked for a reboot, we simply wanted to continue the story from GB2 or the video game (depending on what is considered cannon).
I'm sure the girls are funny, but they felt bland and boring, except for the chick who played Holzman. She made this movie somewhat watchable.
The comedy is forced and not funny, the ghosts look like ghosts from Scooby doo 2. The "epic" battle at the end is with the logo ghost.
