Recently, I liked “Green Room”, and “Split”, but it continues to be a hard genre to break out with a truly original idea. Jordan Peele’s “Get Out” felt like the universe had heard my prayers. A smart satire on social commentary with genuine humor, and yet a still bone chilling plot? How have we been so blessed? The balance of horror and comedy is weighted perfectly, with every release of laughter being used to reset the suspense, giving the audience the chance to build back up to paralyzing fear over and over again. All of the performances were pitch perfect (Alison Williams with the keys!), and I anticipate this is only the beginning of Daniel Kaluuya’s rise. I often complain to my friends that the biggest disservice of the horror/thriller genre is that by pigeonholing something as “a scary movie”, you isolate a whole demographic of people who want to just go see a blockbuster on the weekends. Having Peele’s name attached and released by Universal on the perfect weekend (only up against week 3 of Lego Batman) gave this layered story a chance to breathe and be appreciated for what it is. Creepy as all hell, and maybe a little too believable. 9.2/10 Expand

The film approaches horror with fewer jumpscares (though there was at least one), and more conceptual fear. Chris faces an inescapable estate where all the residents and visitors know some terrible secret kept hidden from him. Get Out relies on absurdity of the supporting characters to embolden the normality of the protagonist, Chris, who not only has to suffer the supernatural elements of his hosts, but the absolute weirdness of their approach. One of the smartest horror films, and smarter movies of recent years, both directed and written by Jordan Peele. Expand

The film, while starred by African Americans and having one that ultimately is the hero, tries to keep an even balance to make all audiences happy. As a white male and one that has conservative political views I wouldn't say the film is as racist as some reviewers say. I get it, black people can be racist too. But this film never really came across as racist in any sort of way. For those who aren't happy - is it that bad for there to be a black male who is the star of the film? The main actor was excellent and again he stayed neutral on the whole race thing. Anyways moving past that, this is my first review on here and made an account for this specifically. The film was good but definitely not worth the critical acclaims. It was fun to watch but at times it could be slow. Peele did an alright job and that's why I'm giving this a 7. I feel like the only reason why this was rated so highly on Rotten Tomatoes is because the main actor is African American and Hollywood is showing their liberal bias. Look, he was great but the film itself was not worth the critical acclaim. The supporting cast was sort of lousy which really overshadows his rperformance. This isn't a must-see like it's played up to be but it's a good film to watch. Won't be an all time great. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I went in expecting the film to have very little depth and to be purely a "white people bad" type of film but was actually pleasantly surprised and entertained. I will say that I wish the film wasn't so based upon race and more about the family's mind control experiments, since this part of the film seemed far more interesting and had some science fiction roots. The slow build was well done by Poole but I felt the last 25 minutes of the film were rushed and didn't leave as much impact as I had hoped. The comic relief is great but sometimes overdone during serious moments of the film. (Rod and Chris in the car after) I felt the film would have won over both political crowds had it not been so focused on the issue of race. don't we get enough politics from the news/social media? I didn't learn anything informative about race while watching the film since stereotypes have always existed and so has racism. The movie has some amazing ideas that remind of past horror films but I believe it race-baits a little too much. Pros: Good pacing, strong lead role (Daniel Kaluuya), interesting use of ideas such as hypnosis and mind control to preserve a family for generations, sparing use of gore (but fantastic when used). Cons: Too focused around politics to win over both crowds, flimsy supporting cast, rushed conclusion. I would give it a 7.5 if I wasn't limited to having to choose full numbers. DISCLAIMER: This is coming from someone who is a Conservative and voted for Trump, and look I didn't give the movie an awful score, would you look at that... P.S The kill with the deer head was fantastic. (Definitely the most important spoiler in my opinion) :D Expand

Bravo to its writer/director Jordan Peele for delivering a movie that is both witty and chilling. Hey, I noticed that one of the characters (in a brief but pivotal role) is named "Roman Armitage." I'm wondering if that could be a tip of the hat to the classic horror movie "Rosemary's Baby," which has a somewhat similar character named Roman Castavet. And it was directed by Roman Polanski. Don't know about you, but I haven't met too many Romans in everyday life. Wondering if Jordan Peele is paying a little homage to that movie. Expand

I went into this movie with no expectations because I didn't want to be disappointed due to the overwhelming hype surrounding the movie. Get Out for me wasn't a horror flick but a psychological thriller shrouded in social commentary about the perceptions and stereotypes people of different races have of each other. Some may find the beginning of this movie to be rather slow because it focuses on character development which for me was a good thing. I found the pace of the movie seemed to flow from scene to scene and I was never bored. I thought every character in the movie held their own and gave great and believable performance particularly the lead actor (Daniel Kaluuya)who played Chris. I felt the lead actor and his co-star(Allison Williams)who played Rose Armitage his girlfriend had a natural chemistry which, drew me into their characters. I loved Chri friend played by comedian(LilRel Howery)who starred as Rod Williams the TSA Agent, who provided the comic relief to the movie. Rose's parents Missy and Dean were odd none to say the lease and added to the thrill of the movie along with the two black employees who were just strange. The other character I won't name only added to the strangeness of the story which was fun to watch. Now I don't understand how the user rating on this site aren't higher but, I can only suspect that either those people, who gave the movie anywhere from a 0 to a 3 didn't watch the movie and are planting fake reviews or they are alt-right Trump supporters with an agenda. Any time you write a review with details that have nothing to do with the story line and then throw in some political B.S to cap off your review you're full of "bleep." Now, I will say that those who genuinely didn't take to the movie felt the movie was either predictable, too slow, or had an issue with the end of the movie. Those reviews I can understand but I can't get behind some of the fake reviews that were created to out of spite just to lower the movies overall high score and positive user movie reviews. There are commenters on this site with a shady political agenda and that's unfortunate but don't allow those comments to detour you from seeing this absolutely fun and engaging film. I'm giving this movie a 10. So if you have the time and some spare cash grab a friend and go see Get Out. Expand

When they go to meet her parents, the extremely accommodating family and some weirdly off-kilter help cause concern..and more. Writer/director Jordan Peele has created a slowly mounting sense of fear that's more about racial tension than cinematic scares. Still, the sinister portent builds with steady apprehension that leads to a brutal outcome. While satirical observations on prejudice add humor (and some plot points strain logic), the overall effect is suitably chilling and completely entertaining. Expand

I immediately thought to myself "There's no way it can be THAT good!" To give you a brief idea, some of the most acclaimed films of all time don't even have this rating ("The Godfather" only has a 99%.) So I went into this while trying not to keep my expectations too high just in case. I'm glad that I did, because this film turned out to be good, but nothing more than good. It had some clever ideas and horror trope twists throughout, as well as some interesting background commentary on race in today's society, but other than that, the film was mostly played out predictably with no real game-changing elements or shocks like I had hoped. Overall, it's undoubtedly a clever and unique film in more ways than not and serves as a worthwhile directorial debut for Jordan Peele, but personally, I'd recommend disregarding that 100%, because simply put, it certainly isn't THAT good! The film had a lot to say, and a highly pertinent and important agenda, but it was hokey and clunky in its delivery. The dialogue is disgracefully ugly, most of the characters are thinly written and generally unlikable, and the narrative and themes critics are calling "subversive" and "satirical" are too conspicuous and on the nose to convey the sort of subtlety that marks great films of the genre. This movie is well shot, well acted, and bares a solid last 20 minutes. Otherwise, it's complete and utter garbage that only takes low hanging fruit at the expense of its, again, very important message. Very confused by the critics' response on this one. Expand

This is one of the best suspense-thrillers of the last decade. Period. A superb cast, excellent direction and story, with plenty of twists and a supporting cast that fills out the corners. Funny when it needs to be, and creepy, crawly and get under your skin for the rest. Jordan Peele has knocked it out of the park with his first directorial effort. If you think This movie is about race baiting, racesploitation, then you fell victim to the true meaning behind the film. Basically **** happens in this movie, and it's **** up, as it is in EVERY Horror/Thriller. Texas Chainsaw, Hostel, etc. **** up **** happens in those movies, and some **** up **** happens in this movie. The MAIN point of this movie is this: At the end, when he calls 911... You know it won't help him, and when the emergency lights show up... Unlike EVERY movie where this means the protagonist(s) is/are safe... it doesn't mean the protagonist in this movie is safe, it means he is screwed... Think about that... As the viewer, you think "Ohh **** the cops showed up! He's ****" That's not the way people think in most movies, we think "YAY! The protagonist is safe!"... Not in this, and that's our OWN rationale reaching for that conclusion. Also, The underlining motivations behind the evil characters is NOT racist. We assume it is, and that's on us. SPOILER!

When the daughter says "grandma" and "Get him Grandpa" That shows they CHOSE the bodies they liked the most, and race didn't play a part. We assumed they "enslaved" the nanny, and the grounds keeper, but they are not. The whole point of this movie was to provide cheap thrills, as any movie in this class does, AND to demonstrate how people see race as motivations behind things. WE see it, my friends who are Black/Asian/First Nations/White saw racism when there wasn't any, and then WE saw the Whole Black-lives matter movement summed up at the end where the cops don't necessarily mean he's safe...

**** Brilliant.

Fake smiles and awkward handling of racially chargedI wish more horror films were as relevant and smart as Get Out. The movie feeds off a paranoia that the majority of the United States population doesn’t experience on a regular basis. Fake smiles and awkward handling of racially charged conversations are masterfully put on display in the first half of the movie. The cracks in the white facade intensify at a steady pace. Uncomfortable questions or points start popping up in the viewer's mind. What is up with the eclectic decor (explicitly called out)? Why are all the black “caretakers” acting “white” on the property? Are we, as white people, really this ignorant? In short, you start to feel an entire system is out to get our protagonist. Admittedly, an early scene explicitly sets the stage up. Mainstream horror films play it safe with the usual jump scares and gory imagery. To be sure, Get Out sports a fair amount of both elements. At some point, all too shockingly familiar racism starts to out scare the traditional horror cliches. Unfortunately, several dumb horror tropes also make an appearance. For example, you have that one horror scene where you have an odd figure chopping wood. The others tropes I could list involve spoilers. The acting is consistently top notch from all involved. I only have one minor quip with the casting choice of a peripheral character. The character certainly sticks out when you notice him and the inclusion is somewhat puzzling. Overall, the subject matter more than makes up for Get Out's very minor shortcomings. How often do movies aimed at a mainstream audience have the audacity to call out whites in America? The timing of the film’s release is sadly impeccable. Racism is alive and well in our country. America "smiled" when she elected Trump as POTUS. I congratulate Jordan Peele for his impressive foray into directing. The film is dense and I certainly missed a few points on my first viewing. Expand
