Whenever a Tiger I tank and SS troops appear together in a movie you can bet the federal gold reserve on it that this movie is not about historical accuracy. This doesn't mean that Fury has no a sense of historicity, but world war II moviesWhenever a Tiger I tank and SS troops appear together in a movie you can bet the federal gold reserve on it that this movie is not about historical accuracy. This doesn't mean that Fury has no a sense of historicity, but world war II movies are actually never about world war II but about the spirit of the time they are made in. If you don't believe me, just (re)watch Kelly's Heroes and compare it to Saving Private Ryan.

The spirit of Fury isn't a pretty one if we are to take our queues from the crew that operates her. During most of the movie they never display any redeeming quality that would endear them to us, they are a truly sad crew. We have reached the bottom of the well as far as humanity goes. Even Apocalypse Now isn't as gloomy as this one. These are dark times were the best are the worst or the other way around. Well, not as bad as the enemy perhaps, who even hang their fellow country women for refusing to resist the invaders in a time that resistance is futile, but as bad as can be and only marginally so.

The key scene is one where Brad Pitt together with Rookie invade a house where two German women hide out. it is one long protracted threat scene that screams rape with every frame. If you have seen Der Untergang, or have read the Last Battle by Cornelius Ryan, you will be aware of how these women would have felt. It isn't a pretty sight to behold.

Fury has a scary anchor point, which is that it doesn't matter what you do as long as you do it, because you have been told to do it and nothing else matters. It reminds me of a phrase of the game Mafia II: in the war the president pointed the finger at whom to kill, now it is the hand that pays me. This movie is thus about moral bankruptcy.
In a human society there is no place for any of the crewman of Fury with an exception perhaps for the rookie who is the least tainted. Society can not work with the scumbags that war has created, and who have traded in their morals and compassion for the command: go forward and kill regardless.

They are the walking dead.

It just needs a bullet to remind them that they are.

Cool movie it has couple of good scenes . But then you look at the Natzi Solidares and they all are Dumb .. And that really switched this movie from . Epic war movie to dumb down war movie.

This movie could be Das Boot with Tanks if they fixed some things . Mainly im talking about the fight scenes with the enemy . In this movie Germans in one scene have RPG's but they never use them against a tank. After the tank stops shooting to change the ammo .. Natzi still shot but still don't use the rpg's. Only later you see the RPG's being upacked . But you see in previous scene many soliders hold them on their back.

Basicly this movie has too much the standard Round around do nothing can't aim enemy cliche overuse. And that is because the fight scenes are poorly writen.

It's a movie that rides fine line between mediocre and good. There were moments when I realized how great this film could have been, but those split-seconds were sparse. It's not as it it's particularly unpleasant, it's just not anything new, and none of the characters stuck out to me.

The plot is pretty commonplace, set in the heart of World War II. We follow Brad Pitt's character, a battered sergeant nick-named 'Wardaddy' who has his hands full commanding his five-men crew in their cramped tank. Dealing with the harsh realities of war and a new man abroad, a young soldier who hasn't been properly trained, they're forced to fight outnumbered and outgunned.

The movie is exactly what you might expect and that's probably why I didn't enjoy it. I was able to predict every move, all the down to each character's arc, and it wasn't an original experience in any way. It felt as it they went down the list of every great war film collecting each trope they could and threw them in as needed.

The most redeeming factor is the cinematography but the other aspects can't match it's greatness. The acting is fine, with Brad Pitt and Shia LaBeouf bringing the most to the table. If you're a fan of the genre, you'll probably like this, but I'd recommend skipping it and revisiting classics like "The Bridge on the River Kwai" or "Patton".

"Fury" attempts to make upFinally, the tank gets its own movie. Long the unheralded workhorse of war, the tank has been largely neglected by Hollywood, probably due to the technical complexity and expense of trying to depict tank warfare. "Fury" attempts to make up for this in spades by reproducing in elaborate detail the everyday grunge, grease and gears of tank warfare in World War II.

The look and feel of "Fury" is reminiscent of "Saving Private Ryan", but is even more accurate and real-to-life. The dirt, the ill-fitting uniforms, the rust, the scars of life are all lovingly recreated. Especially notable are the costumes, which depict civilian and military dress at the time far more accurately than any movie ever made previously. The wardrobe department must have worked from thousands of contemporary photographs and had an army of seamstresses and designers slaving away to faithfully conjure up every emblem and button and ribbon. The scenes depicting German POWs in a holding camp and a marching column of panzer grenadiers are absolute masterpieces of technical accuracy and wardrobe fidelity. The only limitation on this display of virtuosity is the sheer panoply of styles--sometimes they show so many different uniforms and costumes within a single unit that is unrealistic because a real unit would not have so great a range of dress.

The hardware in the movie is equally realistic. Real tanks have been fully reconstructed to show exactly how they were during the war, paint chips, donkey baskets, dents and all. Pistols, ammo, machine guns and other accessories all are correct down to the click of the slide and cock of the hammer. Even civilian goods are rescued from ye olde antique shop: bottles of wine, wash basins, armoires, rugs, tea kettles, china--all straight out of pre-war Germany.

The real shining star of the movie is the battle scenes, though. These artillery explosions, armor piercing rounds and .50-caliber fire are not your father's SFX squibs and witches brew burnoffs; they are hyper realistic recreations of the actual sights and sounds of real warfare. The whine of high-velocity fire really sets your hairs on end. The only flaw is that the action is compressed, the combatants being too close to each other, but this is obviously necessary so that everything is visible. The producers went to great lengths to show actual combat tactics, so you see infantry support, dug in AT, bore-sighted ambushes, panzer faust and all kinds of other realistic tactics from actual warfare.

The weakness of the movie is its script, which is full of anachronistic modern language and implausible situations with people talking and acting like 1990 east LA toughs instead of real 1940s soldiers. The final battle scene is also completely absurd, with dozens of elite Nazis throwing themselves in front a helpless tanks gun's. It's like those old cowboy and Indian movies in which the Indians deliberately ride in front of cavalry soldiers so they can get shot down. There is also a weird romance/rape scene that tries to split the difference between gang rape, wartime prostitution and cross-cultural dating and ends up in a very awkward place.

All-in-all, if you are war buff or gear head you will love this movie, but don't expect too much from the dramatic side of it.

The first third of this film is mostly brutal, grimy war. The respite in the middle involves two German women. The final encounter manages to boost the action quotient. It's painted with some arresting visual imagery and drenched in blood, mud, and macho drama. It's war, so things are tough, but the relentless unpleasantness of the one-dimensional characters doesn't make it more bearable (and Pitt has some of the worst war lines ever). Compelling at times with well-done violence, but lacking in that extra quality element that would have made it a great film. Expand

Saving Private Ryan set the modern day standard for conveying the sounds, imagery and fury of war. Fury the movie has plot themes that, unfortunately, parallel Saving Private Ryan without adding any insights. The acting of Brad Pitt (as a tank commander), as well as that of his fellow tank crew members, is credible. Where the movie falls short is in its direction and the lack of a particularly new or unique story line. The film contains too many contradictions, which kill its credibility.
Director (David Ryan) seems intent on sending the message that death in war is totally random. Paradoxically, everyone who dies in this movie is killed by a perfect shot. We are shown many sudden violent deaths, but the large number of people who get stabbed cleanly through the eye socket or have their head blown off straight across the neckline, in a relatively bloodless and painless way, seems oddly unrealistic. (About halfway through, you may find yourself wondering how many people have had their heads shot clean off.) Compounding the problem, Pitt does most of his fighting on top his tank, rather than inside it. The movie reminds us that in WWII American tanks had inferior amour plate, and we see tank after tank destroyed from a single enemy hit. Yet, when Pitt’s tank runs over a mine buried in the road, it merely disables the tank tread. Moments later we see one of Pitt’s crew running up that same road, apparently unconcerned about the presence of additional mines. The final sequence is reminiscent of the movie 300, with Pitt fighting off dozens of crack SS troupes from on top of his tank. None seem capable of hitting a fixed and exposed human target, except fora German sniper, inexplicably dressed in full camo gear (including a stringy face cover) despite the fact that it’s nighttime and pitch black outside.
Classic WWII movies from the 1960’s like Patton, The Longest Day, and Battle of the Bulge, though highly romanticized, have more interesting story lines about the history of WWII. In the 1980’s, Platoon and Apocalypse Now showed us bizarreness and insanity of war. In the 1990’s, Saving Private Ryan, showed us the real imagery and noise of war, reminded us why sometimes we have to fight, and the depth of the sacrifices that some individuals have made in the name of freedom. The only unique sequence in Fury occurs when Pitt, after helping liberate a German town, protects two vulnerable women from possible rape and abuse from his own men, which may account for the final oddity of this movie: women seem to find this movie appealing.

Cons: Lack of genuineness, originality, subtlety. Alot of scenes were rushed, cliche, or just lacked a subtlety of acting that you'd expect of this movie. whoever wrote the script really needs to step their game up because most of the time i was cringing relatively hard especially during a certain 'time killing' scene around the middle of the movie which had me gasping and closing my eyes at how much they could have nixed or written better.
If I had the opportunity to go back and time and unsee this movie, i'd probably take it.

"Fury" isn't a terrible to be honest; Brad Pitt gives a veteran performance to really flavor up the movie. However, the film heavily suffers from the usual war-movie formulas with tear-jerking squad/ protagonist death sequences we've all seen before.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. A story is practically absent and very one-sided. No signs to be found of the other nations that were actively involved in tank combat on the western front; such as the British, Canadian, Polish and French soldiers. Technically the sets and materials are historically correct but the scenes look far from realistic. The tank shell tracers are directly copied over from Star Wars and the indestructibility of the main-characters tank is jaw dropping. (For people with less military knowledge, a M2A4E8 Sherman really will not bounce a shell from a Tiger I on such short range). The most notable shortcomings of the movie are the fact that the main characters really try their best to act like **** the lack of (depth in) the story, implied moral superiority of the American soldiers, the often unsuitable comic relief and editing mistakes near the end of the movie.

My main concern is however this: Shouldn't certain scenes be morally reprehensible? Shooting an unarmed and surrendered German soldier at point blank range to make a devious and dubious point, really was- and isn't cool. Did we also really have to see a corpse being run over multiple times in full gore? Most bizarre is the love scene halfway during the movie where Brad Pitt and his little helper barge in a German Women's home with their Tommy guns pointed in their face. After some very awkward chit chat things calm down and they basically demand some brunch under the threat of being shot. War being war the German girl drops her panties for Pitt's little helper and they go off to the bedroom to do some funny stuff. Next thing you know their Ogre-like tank buddies barge in on their little brunch and demand to rape the women. Which can be narrowly avoided by telling some gruesome story. All of which becomes more bizarre when the home of these women gets bombed a little later and no-one seems to care?! What kind of message is this supposed to send of the viewer? Lastly the final scene were half a Waffen-SS battalion gets killed like a bunch of lemmings is absolutely absurd and extremely unrealistic. The message of the movie however is clear at this point; 'Murica = good, Nazi's = bad and Hollywood = the worst.

That being said I can't help to admit that Fury is a fairly entertaining WWII movie. For people with interest in WWII era tanks it offers a nice point of view and there are certainly some cool scenes in the movie for tank enthusiasts. Especially since this is one of the rare movies that actually follows a tank crew. In the end I guess I enjoyed myself although the movie left me with a very awkward feeling which in the end made me write this review right now. Hearing people laugh in the theater at the most morally wrong scenes really left food for thought and I hope people can put things into context when watching this movie. Don't expect any depth, it's just your typical 'Murican F*-yeah pew pew movie.

However, Fury is still a movie, and should have cultivated relationships between characters a bit more. They all have their moments, of course, especially Jon Bernthal and Brad Pitt, but all in all they are personas rather than people.
What's best, the shootings and explosions are contained and the fighting scenes are filmed a bit differently than usual. I also liked the lengthy scene in the German house - although not as intense as it could have been.

Logan Lerman's performance, I found, was shaky at first but towards the end of the film it consolidated, together with his character's fiber. Brad Pitt was very credible as "Wardaddy", but again, it's a one-way character and there was only one way to portray him.

It does so remarkably, until it fails in the final 30min lasting showdown, in which 5 guys destroy an entire battalion of 300 German elite soldiers, one that is heavily armed and fitted with tank busting Panzerfausts, one that manages to flank the detracked armor, yet gets annihilated like chickens in a mechanized slaughterhouse. Like Spielberg's last battle scene in the village of SPR, in the manner of old "Call of Duty", the hordes of nihilistic death wishing lemmings of German elites simply run straight into the Sherman's lines of tracers - in the hundreds. For 30 minutes. If you want a good war movie, three fourths of this movie is watchable and great fun. The last part just lets you shake your head in disbelief, and you don't need to be a history enthusiast to realize that the revengism always pulls through in the end, a classic theme ending most American warmovies these days. Somehow the directors fail to realize that this breaks the entire impression, kills the immersion of the movie, and does grand injustice to the actors' otherwise great job. One really must feel sorry for them. Expand

They absolutely loved it and even compared it to Saving Private Ryan and some other classic WWII films. I wasn't so convinced. There are moments where the action and gun fights are fantastic, but some of the character interactions in the quiet scenes in between seemed formulaic and cliche. I will avoid spoilers here but these characters are repeats of characters we have seen before in Band of Brothers, The Pacific, The Big Red One, Saving Private Ryan, etc. The cast is strong and the actors play their parts well enough, but the script seems to limit the characters to broad stereotypes.
There is also a breakfast scene where the crew is eating eggs in an apartment in a town they have liberated. Some of the characters behave in ways that are not consistent with the rest of the movie. Pitt's character in particular seems like he is lost in that scene whereas he is normally a strong and dependable leader. Once the scene is concluded it is never referred to again and all of the characters proceed as though nothing had changed. When I quizzed my group about this scene, even the guys who liked the movie the most agreed that this was a peculiar scene that was out of character for Pitt.
Overall, when seen on a big screen with a good sound system, it's worth seeing for all of the WWII carnage and the close knit bonds of the tank crew, but don't expect story or characters that you haven't seen before. I don't regret spending the $13 ticket price, but when it comes to HBO I will probably pass on watching it again.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. An entertaining movie to an extend, but not very authentic and unrealistic. I really liked how they showed the truth about the pile of crap the M4 Sherman was. It was simply despicable that the Army sent their boys in such deathtraps into a war. I liked how they used authentic terms like AP (armor piercing) ammunition and I liked that they actually used Germans and not Americans who try to speak German. Though, somebody should have coached Mr. Pitt a bit better, he sounded like he talked German for the very first time and was barely understandable. I liked how they showed the hell that is war and how it changed even the heroes in this movie to heartless pigs who execute people randomly. Here is where my praise ends.

The anti-tank crew in the first field battle was extremely stupid. They couldn't hit a barn door on 5 ft. Unrealistic. Not even very inexperienced crews were that bad. The Tiger battle was not much better. It was true that Tigers wrecked havoc amongst Shermans, but the Tiger crew was very bad. They weren't able to perform a simple maneuver to prevent the Sherman from getting besides/behind them, which is simply turning their tank on the spot. Not to mention at the end of the battle they suddenly didn't shoot anymore. The rear actually had the same armor strength as the front. Only the sides were not protected well. Also Sherman 76 mm guns could penetrate part of the front of a Tiger at such close range and even the sides, but every hit of the Tigers 88 mm gun would have obliterated an M4. The one hit deflected by wooden planks was laughable. In reality it would have penetrated the tank in its whole width and killed everyone inside. Wood is no protection at all against a tank gun.

What was it all about that soldiers shooting at tanks with rifles, MGs and hand guns like madmen? That never happened to that extend.

About every 3rd or 4th of those 300 soldiers at the end carried an unused Panzerfaust. And suddenly they have only 4 or 5 left stored in a case? And why don't they just jump behind the trees/bushes at the side of the road and seek cover to attack the Sherman from the flanks? Nope, they ran right into the line of fire and even hid in a house??? Then they use the AT Weapons from point blank and still miss? And the one that hit it right in the middle didn't kill all the people inside? Impossible. And even if so, why didnt anyone use the hole in the tank to lob grenades into it at the end? Why didn't the crew use that hole to throw the last grenades out again? The driver of the Sherman lobbed grenades out of his hatch while his commander sat on top of the tank without getting shrapnel into his face from those grenades? Mr. Pitt with 2 obvious shots to both lungs was able to speak normally and live on for a long time. That M4 crew just killed like 200 of his friends and the German seeing him under the tank lets him go? Please...

Sorry, even with all the good things, this movie felt more like propaganda from those times.

Cameraderie and merry barbarism in the field, just like when we plundered Baghdad for no reason and hauled old women out into the street at gunpoint. Blah blah blah. It`s apparently the destiny of young, moronic American males to be brainwashed into loving war so they`ll sign up the next time there`s an oilfield DC wants to steal. The acting here is good to be fair. But that`s about it. The usual sentimentality and all the conversations no one ever has while being on the front you apparently need to make a Hollywood fiction. Not only that but we`re gonna lock five dysfunctional Americans inside one of the worst tanks produced in WWII and they`re gonna shoot up half the German army all by their lonesomes. Because Hollywood knows history!

The last good US WWII movie I saw was When Trumpets Fade. And this movie does not change that stat. Worth a watch if you don`t care about historical accuracy at all and are starving for a WWII movie. Otherwise I`d give it a miss. If you do be prepared for lots of fake ambiguity of the classical war romanticist kind, pioneered in later decades by Steven Spielberg.

Movie was Ok. I felt the combination of the script, the acting and the costumes made the characters pretty unbelievable and caricature-ish. They all kind of reminded me of the crew in the cartoon Atlantis...

In case there was any doubt in your mind as to the validity of that aphorism, "Fury" rolls through a 2 hours and change slog of French mud and artillery blasts to reinforce the point. The film depicts the claustrophobic, tin-can environment of a US Sherman tank crew as the Allies try to push back the Germans in the spring of 1945 after D-Day. The exhaustion is etched in the faces of these crew members led by the enlightened but battle-hardened Sergeant Collier (Brad Pitt) who has literally seen uncounted ways for men to die on the battlefield from Africa, to Belgium, to the Bulge.

There are some virtuoso battle scenes, including a tactical battle-to-the-death showdown with a Panzer tank at short range. But the middle of the film sags badly with a pit-stop in a small French village where the Allied forces kick back for some relaxation, taking time to play pianos, cook eggs, and indulge in some earthly delights. But predictably, it ends badly with the loss of innocence for the newest crew member played by Logan Lerman. His fellow crew mates all seem to have the required Southern US accent of B-level actors that informs the audience that these are salty grunts, presumably from Podunk USA.

The final act is incredulous as it depicts a legion of Nazi soldiers who seem to be cheerfully pressing on in the fight but incapable of outwitting these Happy Few in a busted Sherman tank. Perhaps it's a personal view of mine, but it really is quite difficult to improve dramatically on the human story of the WWII European theater beyond what "Saving Private Ryan" and HBO's "Band of Brothers" have already so artfully done.

The movie manages to build enough tension throughout to entertain despite foreshadowing each death with a flashing neon sign reading "THIS GUY IS NEXT!!!"

I found it to be predictable yet still entertaining.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. “Fury” is a brutally honest depiction of war, following the five man crew of a US Sherman tank during the Allied Army’s final push on Germany in 1945. Although it’s close to the end of the war, ‘Wardaddy’ (played by Brad Pitt) points out that “a lotta people gotta die” first, and boy do they in this film, in fact so much so in the final third of the film that it lets it down. Yet as the dead built-up I found myself consistently referencing back to Boyd ‘Bible’ Swan (played by Shia LaBeouf), telling Norman Ellison (played by Logan Lerman), to wait till he sees “what a man can do to another man” and that is what this film is all about; the horrors of war.
The film is obviously anti-war and this is vividly illustrated by the impact of the conflict on the five man crew. We can tell these men are changed men and we see this change in its entirety in Lerman’s character, whose performance is commendable here, going from hesitating to kill to enjoying it. These men are broken by war and we see this for example in the moments when Pitt’s character goes to take a break from it all with a cigarette in mouth, almost breaking down, and incredibly well-acted. These painfully long shots have impact. It is important here not to forget to mention how well the rest of the crew perform too. What I picked out best of all though was how these men were just as bad as the Nazis, leading me to question whether any one side was worse than the other. The film’s director, David Ayer, does well to pose these questions. He also does extremely well in the first two thirds of the film.
If I was to watch the film again I would stop at the end of the second third and give it 4 stars, but the film’s final third lets it down. The finale is full of blood, guts and glory and, although it is somewhat fitting considering the questions that Ayer poses, did well to detach me from it, leaving me far from caring about the lives, even of the crew members, that were being taken as well as the questions that Ayer had done so well to pose. A tank battle just before this also did well to detach me, with the Nazis suddenly forgetting how to aim, but hey, this is Hollywood. The film’s strengths instead lie in its earlier stages, as well as its cast, all doing well to emphasise that war really is hell.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This is your typical war movie with lots of killing. They did throw in a young soldiers struggle to come to terms with war and killing, and that was the major story line next to how inferior the American tanks were to the German tanks during WWII. The whole movie was basically inside a tank. I think the final battle went overboard and became ridiculously unbelievable on how a whole platoon of German soldiers took forever to take down one inferior American tank with only a few American soldiers on board. I'm sure die hard war fans will like this movie. Expand

For all it's grittiness and intensity, the film, particularly in the final scene often breaks away from reality. While I've thenakfully never been in a combat situation, I find it difficult to belive the heroic nature of the final scene, as well as the banter that occurs in the confined space of the tank. Brad Pitt gives a reasonable performance, and the scenery is sound, but those two alone are insufficient to carry this movie. See Inglorious Basterds instead.

The first three quarters of the film is good: character development, scene setting, emotional engagement, realistic and cinematically well-produced action. The last quarter is disappointingly weak, with limited engagement of any sort, an unnecessarily long and unrealistic scene at the end and none of it emotional enough to make its own statement about the experience endured to make up for the rest.

Individual performances are excellent, credible and engaging; equally, particular scenes are rare treats that explore unusual facets of the combat experience and the contradictions that accompany it. Overall, I would recommend it to a friend for the first three quarters, but only when it came to network TV.

What we have here is more a time travel movie than a WWII movie. It plays like a bunch of misfit Americans transported out of "the hood" and re-materialising on a WWII battlefield. I felt that the extensive use of modern idiom and hair styles really took away from a historically set movie.

I mean, we don't expect the latest Beh Hur to be presented in Latin or ancient Yiddish but we do expect language and idiom that is widely perceived to be in use during the time the movie is set. Just another unrealistic aspect of modern movie making that quite frankly is jarring.

Fury is a character driven war drama about a troop that goes through various range of emotions whilst fighting against Germany. Pitt's urge to play safe by going under a war genre backfires vigorously as the medium chosen in here doesn't necessarily respects or honors the sincerity of it. Having said that, the feature has its moments undoubtedly but unfortunately that too, is extracted from typical textbook formula. Stuffing in all such material to keep it alive and breathing for more than two hours, isn't feasible at all. Such familiar structured script with such safe acts are far away from being furious let alone be morally competent. If anything it is blighted enough to even take the heat out of the plausible work pulled of by the actors in here. The background score is dull along with editing and cinematography, but what draws the attention is gut-wrenching visuals; kudos to the art designing department, and sharp sound effects. The writing is more blunt than strong with coherent loud symbols (the dinner table conversation is where the line should have been drawn) that audience gets sick off, listening to. Ayer; the writer-director, is no short on execution and seems to have matured in its own method, no matter how long he still has to go to, to offer its own script some gravitas. Pitt is putting all his chips in with equal arrogance and raw power foliated in his portrayal with Bernthal's sassiness and Pena's reserved act, the feature is quite good on the performance objective. The chemistry among the characters and few comic action sequences (like Pitt's tank against a huge tank) are the only high points of the feature. Fury is of safer breed that completely contradicts its genre but then is also immensely gripping.
