Reynolds carries the film a bulk of the way and while the cast is certainly talented, The characters are so insufferable that it is hard to root for anyone because they're so freaking obnoxious.

Within the first 20 minutes of the film, What little charm it had died when you realize that it revolves solely on Reynolds giving a rather typical performance playing a character that he seems to enjoy being typecast in. It just sucks.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The movie is littered with inconsistencies, and is a severe misrepresentation of what MMOs (and game dev for what's matter) look like, a somewhat mix of Saint Row and Wow. E.G., they could have pick up inspiration from things like GMod for the "mods having god powers" but no they went full Dr Strange instead, and don't get me started on the gamers are losers living in basements jokes...
It peaked at the Cpt America/Star wars scene,I watched the movie because it was not a sequel or from the MCU and they flopped most of the references (like the portal gun) to overdo this one...
The final plot-twist about the island still being in the reflections was maybe the one good idea, but eventually ruined by the island "appearing" for all the eyes to see when stepped on...

Such a waste a good nice idea, exploring actual "living" machine learning AI ruined by people who don't know that world and would rather cram not subtle politics into the viewer face.

Sorry if this is a bit unstructured bu I made that account to write it.

Unfortunately, the movie actually takes itself seriously. Rather than "ha-ha, it'd be crazy if this could happen," it tries to pretend its premise is ... how can I put this ... not retarded? A lot of the stuff they portray as "in-game" is entertaining, but the parts in the "real world," which take up way too much of the movie, are even more far-fetched that the "in-game" parts.

It doesn't help that the movie gets political ("guns are bad, mmm'kay?" along with a couple other topics) but it'd be easier to breeze past that if the whole thing wasn't so committed to pretending it was plausible.

The story didn't follow any actual story, there's random youtuber/twitch scenes in there that look like they don't belong and they just added them for the "Hey I watch that person on Twitch!" factor. The saving grace to this film was Ryan Reynolds, and if he wasn't in this film it'd be a 0 from me. I watched with a party and nobody enjoyed the film and agreed that it was just poorly written and more of a collection of pop culture references rather than an actual movie. Disappointing. Expand

A film made by NPCs for NPC audiences. As an NPC myself this movie was not relatable ENOUGH. Waste of time you will lose vital health points watching this tropetastic cartridge of predictability, but maybe we're all game for wasting our time?

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Predictable. Watched this as I know that Jodie Comer is a fantastic actor and even she managed to let me down a few times when her accent slipped. She could have chosen a much better movie for her Hollywood debut. The plot was predictable from the moment it was revealed that Guy had a crush on Millie and that the other dude who's in stranger things programmed him. Ridiculous hetero normative nonsense. I didn't laugh at all during the course of the movie, the good jokes were all in the adverts. Predicatbale, cliche, 'love will save us all' plot line, could have had a more philosophical air to it about the reality of artificial intelligence even but chose to focus on fortnite dances and cheap hits. DO not watch this movie if you're over the age of 8. Unlike movies such as shrek, this is not universal. Expand

With worse jokes. And uninspired kills. For instance, they stole the lame Girl-shooting-while-riding-backwards motorcycle stunt from Knight and Day. And the Antoine Mogul character, tries way too hard to be clever / edgy but ends up just being annoying. The leads are supposed to be in love. But have zero chemistry. The dialogue is strictly after school special. Sorry to sound so negative. But it could have been so much more. Expand

Incredibly pandering and tedious, Free Guy dumbs down the plot to focus on the underwhelming effects and blaring references to better IPs. The concept is good, and it deserved a much more thoughtful execution than this.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I got the chance to see this, via Screen Unseen at Odeon. And God, I was disappointed. I had 3 main gripes with this mediocre mess: cinematography, writing, and casting.

Starting off, I found nothing of narrative worth, interesting or new concepts, or entertaining jokes. I think I only laughed once, something beyond a nasal exhale. Whilst talking plot, they clearly don't understand how online games work, even how servers work at all. Games don't slowly just dissapear when being turned off, and in this case, destroyed. The characters don't change at all, or change in literally half a second. Especially the human characters. The ending comes to mind, with her randomly realising the programmer dude, forgot what he's called, just that generic, loves her or whatever. Randomly cuts in the middle of the hug too for whatever reason. Cinematography to me just felt generic. Bland. Nothing. No interesting colour uses, similar lighting throughout, just half assed. I guess the repeating shots are interesting, following the patterns of AI, I suppose.

Casting was a major issue, as with the presence of Taika Waititi. The first thing that comes to mind when a gaming company CEO comes up, is not an old dude from New Zealand, dressed in a mix between hobo clothes and Supreme.

This instantly came off to me as The Lego Movie -esque rip off. Just lazy. First original movie I saw in cinemas this year, and it was trash. Fantastic.

Too many references, like f*cking Fortnite is one of the cringe worthy ones. Then the mediocre acting of most of the cast, no real emotion. Everything is forced. Trying to understand gamers and failing miserably is happening over and over all over the media...
Putting Pokimane, the biggest douchebag hypocrite on Twitch is another reason why I have lost a bit of respect for Ryan...
He is great in comedy movies, the latest one, Red Notice for an example : Great chemistry between the cast, fun movie to watch on a Sunday night...
But Free Guy, a forgetable experience

Disney probably tried doing something like Ready Player One but the shoe was too big. While Ready Player One gained depth from a world behind a world (a dystopian Virtual Reality future) Free Guy kitschy idealizes AI to the maximum to build a near to trivial storyline. Here and there I had some fun watching it but overall it was a silly experience. Surely no surprise, it’s a „modern Disney“. Expand
