Greta Gerwig is endearing, with her difficulty facing life's realities (and her bad hair). But she can't make up for the fact that F's aimless missteps are not that entertaining. Also, the intense passion between the two girlfriends -- continual mini traumas, constant I love yous -- just seemed odd & ridiculous. Really, really liked Noah B's other films, but found this one blah. Expand

The character (and apparently the actor) are self-involved to the exclusion of good filmmaking. I'd call it a character study, but the character's not that deep. She 's a woman who is not successful at career, finances or friendships (with the exception of her best girlfriend). She ambles thru her aimless life, which starts out charmingly but gets tiresome and talkative before it's over. Maybe Baumbach thought shooting it in black and white would elevate it above basic twentysomething mumblecore, but it didn't work for me. Expand

Everything was great except for the blubbering blundering francis (greta gerwig) who even though she had few funny moments in all she just kept on talking non stop a very bad influence for upcoming young adults.

Endearing and enjoyable and pleasing, one of the better of this genre (talk-y millennium young woody allen) which admittedly is not my favorite. Gerwig is also very strong in the role.

To use black-and-white photography in film today is a gutsy move. Fortunately for Noah Baumbach it paid off--the lack of color allows focus on the character study at hand.

Drama. Black & white. A ditsy dancer's flat-mate moves out and she has to struggle to rebuild her life. Failed to get into it and gave up after 20 mins.

First the script is very, very vague, very loose, I understand to what it aims but in reality it goes nowhere, Greta Gerwig's character; Frances, is not really likeable, I mean, I can accept people still struggling to find the direction of their life
but she simply does not have any interest more than to wake up from one day to next, I had been told that the character was really nice and funny but I just didn't see it, anywhere, it was rather exasperating, at least she's honest and that is appreciated.

Also one of the worst things this film has it's the editing, something that hurts this film really bad. The editing in this movie it's one of the worst I've seen in a very long time, the way the scenes are intertwined is terrible, they gave me a feeling of great uneasiness because as I said the story goes nowhere and the interactions of the character are so banal and superficial, especially because most of them seem to be improvised. I admit it this film is simply the simplistic life of the character but I think they could have done something much more interesting. You have to be honest, it seems as if they had been thinking about which situations they could put the character in, instead of really making the character the center of the situation, because she always seems to be out of place and that was really off putting.

For this one I did had expectations and I must say it was a let down.

An ode to being young and free in New York that falls flat.
I like Baumbach's style, but I'm not sure what's to be gained by filming this in black & white.

Fun and engaging enough, the struggles feel real and relatable but the characters don't. Its black and white because ???

Not a bad film, but also not worth recommending. It centers around a young woman who is adrift, and her resistance to becoming an adult. Plenty of sexual references and drinking in an effort to make its mundane scenes seem more edgy.
