Then I repeated it couple more times. I know that I had made a wrong judgement. It's the kind of movie that had a deeper meaning than it looks like and the one that gets better each time you see it. Not only is David Fincher's direction spot-on, with every nuance working just the way it should to get the message across, but Brad Pitt and Ed Norton both give excellent performances as the film's protagonists.
The story and visual style tap into the human mind on certain primal levels. Not only does the film itself release aggression, but it helps viewers do the same. Everything works just right to get a brilliant message across, resulting in a very entertaining and very well made film.

Essentially a satirical fable, it tells of an insomniac loser teaming up with a seditious soap salesman to form a no-holds-barred-fight club as an outlet for their direction-less aggression. This concept is an intriguing and original one, and works really well. Then there is the script, it is absolutely superb, with dialogue that will make you both laugh and think. Fight Club is very well made, with elaborate production design, great editing and startling images. David Fincher's direction is brilliantly handled and the performances of Edward Norton and Brad Pitt are superb. This is one of those movies that promises a lot less than it offers, making it a pleasant surprise. Personally, I had low expectations when I saw this movie, but in fact I had read virtually nothing about it before I saw it.

The ingenious script is based on the strange and somewhat masochistic friendship between two very different men. One is very shy and the other very rebellious and iconoclastic. Both create a discreet, strict-rule fight club that evolves into a sort of secret society of anarchist contours. The story has a lot of twists and turns, surprising us, catching our attention. However, its not a perfect movie and there are really logical gaps and credibility issues in the story, not to mention that, at some point, the audience no longer really knows what is true in everything they saw. I believe this is intentional, and I recognize that its a feature that has its charm, but it may disappoint some people (personally I dealt with it reasonably well).

A decidedly good point in this movie is the gigantic performances of Brad Pitt and Edward Norton. Both are great actors, when they have space and material to evolve, and that's what happened here. Both actors were brilliant and developed throughout the film a bizarrely perfect partnership, with a touch of sadism, repressed homosexuality and predatory instinct. David Fincher, the director, also deserves congratulations, as he's the hand that guides everything and manages, with this film, to present to the world what (so far) is the masterpiece of his career as a film director.

Technically, the movie is quite good. The shadowy cinematography and the use of high contrast between light and dark were well used features, and the shooting and framing angles are very clever. The soundtrack, discreetly, also helped to accentuate the film's surrealism at the right times. Of course, its an action movie about an underground fighting club, so there are plenty of scenes of gratuitous violence, some of them quite brutal, as well as nudity and dialogues loaded with insults and profanity. So, I leave my warning to parents: its not a children's movie at all, and even teenagers should only watch it with great caution as its really a violent movie.

Having found it, he can wallow unrestrainedly in exactly those emotions from which he believes that he has emancipated himself' (G. Orwell). That's what "Fight club" is about. Emasculated middle class men of European origin who got bored by their comfort life and became destructively violent, rejective of private property, revolutionary against existing order and hierarchy, who have no sexual principles to the point of sexualization of children entertainment and eager to hide their real identity behind masks while prone to terror attacks... Does it sound familiar? I guess that our collective main protagonist materialized his Tyler Durden alter ego in person of Antifa. And it's not that violence or promiscuous sex or rejection of property could cure them. It just shows that men remain men no matter how you try to emasculate them. Their repressed manhood will still manifest itself, but unshackled and not properly harnessed. It will manifest in uncontrolled violence (instead of controlled violence and code of honor), destructive behavior (instead of courteous), superstitious beliefs in ideological dogmas (instead of Christian faith) and dubious "martyrs" and "saints" (instead of real ones), rebellion against consumption and property (instead of following common sense, charity and respect of oneself's and others property), weird asexuality (instead of chastity and sex in marriage) and wild tribalism (instead of healthy patriotism). All what is right and natural, when not properly harnessed but repressed, will manifest itself weirdly and destructively. Expand

You have people coming together that couldn't be any more different. From consumer culture, to toxic masculinity and chauvinism, everything important moving society in modern times gets critiqued and that in a subversive but well executed manner. The filmmaking is absolutely top notch, there are just so many cool camera shots, details, 4th wall breaks, and even fight scenes. The last half hour especially is some of the most creative and moving stuff I've seen in mainstream cinema!
Everybody should see this movie at least once and make up their mind about it.

PS: Don't start real life fight clubs, if you took that away from the movie, you probably haven't watched it.

I can only imagine how impressively innovative it must have seemed when it first came out, with its surreally pulsating soundtrack, constant miniature sucker punches, and wildly inspired direction. The performances are all darkly comical and Nortan's character is an amusingly disturbed individual. It's not perfect however. It has a twist ending that descends the story into complete, albeit entertaining, stupidity, it packs on way too much sexually immoral content, and lacks any true meaning despite its constant insistence that it does. It also slows down too much during some sections. These flaws would normally sink a movie's score a lot further down and even kill some outright, but Fight club is so entertaining in a hyper macho off kilter sort of way, so well made, and so memorable in ways that few movies can ever achieve that in the end they're not detrimental to the film's overall quality. I have to say, Fight Club is some sort of flawed, but brilliant classic. But don't watch it unless you're mature and old enough to not be scarred by some of the film's immoral or violent material. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Fight club is a very interesting film to talk about, seeing in how it talks about such a hot subject and has lots of messages and meanings. I will try however to try and simplify as much as I can. Fight club is about an insomniac who meets this guy who then gets him to form a fight club. From that it sounds pretty simple, but in actuality it's a bit more complex. He starts joining therapy sessions merely for the thrill, I know it's strange right? But apparently the thrill is that he can finally try and show some emotions. I guess that this is here to later show up in the film, like how they talk about his life is meaningless and he only goes along with curve to get by. A lot like the catcher in the Rye. Once we are introduced to Tyler Durden the film starts to become much more interesting, and I think that's a good joke as well. Brad Pitt does a great job of being this leader of anarchy, he's charismatic, and has the right attitude to approaching people to join his cause. Edward Norton however is uninteresting, but that's the point, and I guess that's a pass in my book. One of the most famous parts of this movie figuring out who Tyler Durden really is, and when you find know it makes everything you just scene even more weird. Also the themes it tries to convey are bit too complicated or not that well thought out. I really do like this film, and I think it is a very good movie, but I think again that it may be saying a bit too much or not making sense. Expand

A fun, twisted movie full of some great acting from Brad Pitt, Edward Norton and Helena Bonham Carter. Directed by the great David Fincher, it tells the story of a nobody who meets an eccentric soap salesman and forms a "Fight Club".

This group of men get up to no good, causing violent crimes and corruption across the city. Brad Pitt's character, Tyler Durden often dares Norton's character to join in on the mischief.

It's the story of a nobody, finally becoming a somebody, yes it's violent and immoral, but that doesn't have to influence whoever is watching it. It actually can reflect on some issues that occur outside in the real world.

I guess the only thing stopping me from rating this movie a 10/10 was the fact that there are times when the movie's run time can feel a little long, and maybe there are some scenes that go over the top. Without spoiling too much, it involves a scene where Norton's character beats another member to a pulp.

Overall, this is a classic, seen it many times in the past, and plan on seeing it many more times in the future.

Fight Club starts off innocently enough, although interestingly enough, and that is what worked so well in the aforementioned Se7en and it is the case here again. Interesting. That's something this director has in his little finger. The film grabs you and doesn't let go and gradually builds up on the interestingness and a wonderful gradation emerges that culminates and also satisfies the viewer, or at least me. The story is not only interesting and engaging overall, but underlined by its revelations. For me, a great film that I recommend. Expand

The film tells the story of a man experiencing an existential crisis who creates a movement, and it is elevated by the dynamic performances of Edward Norton and Brad Pitt as unlikely partners, and Helena Bonham Carter as the quirky Marla Singer. The film's originality, part-time drama, part-time dark comedy, and its themes of existentialism, masculinity and consumerism have made it a timeless classic. While the film may feel a bit dated at times, it's undeniable that 'Fight Club' has left an indelible mark on cinema and pop culture.

It's pretty good, in a weird way, until the last act where it goes very over the top and introduces a super high concept twist, which is just off the wall. And the final scene makes no sense at all. At the end, the protagonist wants to stop someone, but the action he takes would not stop the events he wants to stop. It's too late. Yet he acts as if it isn't. It's just nonsensical. But it was fun. Reminded me a little of Twelve Monkeys, which is a far superior movie also with Brad Pitt. Expand

My 200th Movie Review!

I really liked this film. A lot of the actors give their performances as grounded as you could get in a movie experience. David Fincher's direction is spectacular and the script is clever, and adds some delightfully dark comedy. This one of the strangest movies I've ever seen, and I say this in the best way possible. Yeah, some moments were a little over-the-top but that didn't ruin the movie.

Overall, pretty good movie with good acting performances and a darkly comic story.

Surely, there have been worse cases of remarkable filmic talent in service of pretentious, sensationalistic trash but few have been so effective and entertaining as this which further complicates the issue. The theme is about how modern society has reduced males into enneuchs and how this warps our subconscious into anarcho-fascist mode, but really... why not just go to the health club and work out a sweat? Norton is brilliant as usual; far more surprising is how Pitt not only holds his own against the great Norton but even outshines him on occasion. Ultimately however, too infantile and stupid to be called irresponsible. This is movie as monumental heavy metal song with punk-rock riffs thrown in for good measure. Expand

A bewildered Carter is brilliant but woefully underused. What happens when you've got too much testosterone and modern society won't let you do anything with it? The filmmakers claim they're showing the folly and danger of wanton mayhem, destruction, and general beating the crap out of each other as coping mechanism, but they sure do a good job of rationalizing and glorifying it. The first half is witty and clever enough; the last act just kind of dissolves into "meh". For all the philosophizing and pontificating, the overall message still seems to be "breaking stuff is cool, huh-huh". Expand

I didn't enjoy this, pretty much at all, but still kinda appreciate how it all comes together. It's a weird one for me.

Overall, 'Fight Club' underwhelmed me. I actually knew very little before viewing it, despite hearing about it on a surface level for years and years; well, one 'regulatory' part of it anyway. It's much deeper than I had expected. Unfortunately, I didn't find entertainment with any of it - it was, to be honest, a slog to sit through.

The only scene I can remember enjoying is the very last one, and I don't mean that negatively because the end shot is terrific. It's just everything that comes before didn't do anything for me. Yet, I still rate its intentions. It did keep me guessing amidst my, near, boredom and the 'event' is a good one on paper. It just failed to connect on me in actuality.

Brad Pitt is good as Tyler, though the likes of Edward Norton and Helena Bonham Carter give meh performances in my opinion. Meat Loaf is interesting, I guess, as Bob.

I'm evidently in the extreme minority with my thoughts, each to their own, but I honestly didn't get into it sadly. As noted, though, I still partially rate it weirdly. 6* feels harsh, so I give it 7*.

Expand

Together they start an underground club where people fight each other, which ends up becoming a terrorist organization that is bent on blowing up a collection of buildings. That sounds ridiculous, but that's all I got out of this movie. It's incredibly pretentious and I don't get the appeal of it. There's an emo girl (Helena Bonham-Carter) who acts as a love interest to the main character, but essentially does nothing but have sex with the main character and serve as a way to foreshadow the movie's huge twist. The twist got me, but that didn't resolve any of my questions. This movie is incredibly disjointed. The main character has no logical reason to be doing the things he does in the film, and the motive is so pretentious and stupid that re-wording it outside the film is impossible. Aside from the sloppy and disjointed plot, the acting was very strong and it had good cinematography. Soundtrack wise, this movie doesn't have any standout tracks, which is a bit disappointing. The movie runs for a little over two hours, which is ridiculously long. Not only that, but it's paced very poorly in my opinion. Nothing really happens until the twist, and even then you're too confused to even care what happens. Overall, Fight Club was a disappointment. It was incredibly pretentious, slow, long, and over-hyped. I respect it for being one of those "you have to watch it twice to fully get it" type of movies, but I've personally never been a fan of that style. Expand

After the dark subtlety of Se7en, I was expecting Fight Club to be similarly atmospheric and engaging. Instead, I got a thoughtless plot bashed out in front of me with about as much sensitivity as Brad Pitt has body fat. The story was so peculiar, and not good or interestingly so, that I lost interest very quickly. The 'shock' ending wasn't even enough to redeem the two hours of nonsense I had just endured. Norton gave a characteristically stale performance, and Brad Pitt, although fairly energetic and likable, offered little theatrical contribution, unless an unnatural six-pack counts. All in all, the pace and (sometimes) the feel of the film was good, but it was headed in the wrong direction and carried by a bad actor and a painful lack of subtlety. If you're mature enough to realize that violence really isn't good for much of anything, you'll see right through the stupid "fighting sets you free from society" and spend two hours wondering why the characters would rather punch each other than do something useful with their time and energy. The general theme of bringing down the office slave lifestyle could have made a great movie, but presenting a fascist underground fighting society as an acceptable alternative is just ludicrous. It's not an aweful movie; I loved the sequence where Tyler uses an unloaded revolver to motivate a convenience-store employee to improve his life, and the liposuction soap counterculture lifestyle was fascinating until it turned into a training complex for gullible and animistic men, but this movie does not deserve its high user score by any stretch. The messageis extremely subtle, and without a solid grasp of philosophy most of the message will go over a typical viewer's head. There's also Tyler's nihilistic outlook, which is deftly woven into his characterisation- his personal philosophy draws heavily from Narodnaya Volya literature, for instance.
