It's VERY LITERATE. Probably David Yates and J.K. Rowling are probably incapable of making anything but a very literate movie. If this does not bother you, give it a try. If the literary plot of #2 distracted you from enjoying the film craft here, best skip this one too. The best of the Harry Potter movies were NOT so literary; they played like blockbusters. Did I mention this plays like a novel?

Kids AND CRITICS who never read many healthy, classic novels are less likely to enjoy it. Negative pro critics seem to want only plots at the level of simplified, exaggerated, comic book heroes and villains. Nuance, subtlety and tenderness apparently do not interest them. I believe for many movie critics, successful comic book plots have replaced well-written novels as their criteria for "good." Too bad for film criticism.

Some pro critics claim this has less magic. Not so. The second scene, before teh credits, the birth of the Chillin and its aftermath, expresses collosal cinematic magic. The magic of the rest of the story is more about human magic, magic in the sphere of positive human intentions and behaviors, the magic of purity of purpose, the magic of a few committed individuals succeeding against evil. If wholesome human magic bores you, skip this film. The film even has a sub-text, the outer mastery and inner self-mastery of Jude Law's Dumbledore. As often happens in real life and stories, of the magic, of a few committed individuals, succeeding against evil, they succeed by first failing, appearing to fail. It's a story of how positive human intention, held by even a small group, can prompt the universe to respond in your favor; towards, the highest good for all concerned.

Although Johnny Depp is very missed as he did a wonderful job, Mads does a fantastic job doing justice to the character of grindelwald! Although the Fantastic Beasts films do have issues, none of them is the story, which has been enthralling from the start. The performances are once again top-notch, with Jude Law delivering his second perfect outing as Albus Dumbledore and Mads Mikkelsen showing what Gellert Grindelwald should be (and I spent three years thinking Johnny Depp was perfect).

Depp was brilliant and what happened to him unjustifiable, but Mikkelsen is perfect as Grindelwald and whom David Yates, the director of every Wizarding World film since Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, originally wanted for Grindelwald. He provides the charm and charisma, and cunning, presence, and malice that encapsulates Grindelwald, without the cartooniness of Depp's look and, sometimes, acting. He's a dialled-down Grindelwald in many respects, but to his benefit not detriment - he's grounded in reality, a trait that the Wizarding World has always strived for and encompassed, which makes him so much more visceral, and real, and makes him feel like a huge threat.

Seven is the most magically powerful number, and David Yates' seventh Wizarding World film lives up to the standards set by its eight Harry Potter and two Fantastic Beasts forebears, delivering a nuanced, intricate, and powerful story that is also alight with spectacle and photo-realistic CGI, including old and new beasts that aren't token inclusions but fundamental to the story and great to learn about, and gorgeous outdoor environments and indoor sets.

Although hardcore fans like myself love the plot and pacing of Secrets of Dumbledore's middlingly received predecessor, Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald, Secrets of Dumbledore shows its creators learnt from their mistakes and listened to the justified criticisms of the previous instalment. Steve Kloves, the screenwriter of every Harry Potter film bar Order of the Phoenix and producer of the Fantastic Beasts films, has aided in writing a wonderful script for Secrets of Dumbledore that is packed with emotion, depth, action, and humour.

Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore has proven itself worthy of the four year wait. It is a brilliant third chapter in the Fantastic Beasts series and sets up its latter half to have a thrilling journey and conclusion.

Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore is absolutely phenomenal. Absolutely phenomenal. It has a beautiful story (as did Where to Find Them and Crimes of Grindelwald) and was beautifully shot. The beasts looked photo-realistic and were absolutely amazing to see and learn about, and Mads Mikkelsen is the perfect Grindelwald. I cried so much, and will be seeing it every week until it leaves theatres.

Great movie. It can be boring if you dont like serious and political stories. Relations between Grindelwald and Dumbledore was amazing. And how can anyone possibly say Depp was better? I like Depp but Grindelwald is Mads Mikkelsen. Thats it.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I thought this film was the best of the Fantastic Beasts series. While the movie wasn’t a fast paced action film, that’s good! Not all film needs to be as flashy as Fast and Furious. I was in a packed theater and everybody loved it! I think there are a lot of people going into this film wanting it to be bad. I’ll admit, I had low expectations as I didn’t like the last one and I was shocked that this one is now one of my favorite films! I cried, laughed, gasped, and felt every emotion one should during a film. It was a nice change with Mads…I’m hoping they do CGI and put him in place of Depp, because he was perfect for the role.

My only complaints were that they rushed Queenie’s storyline a bit, I felt like she needed to be given more time both on the dark side and more time for her unraveling from the dark side.

Honestly leaving Tina out helped the story immensely as her character is awkward and flat, so seeing her in the end was the perfect amount for me.

I loved the new characters and the development of Jacob within the series. I loved Lolly! She was a great addition—and a nice touch that she was teased in the previous film. It was nice to see the brothers have more time on screen together even if their seen was a tad but silly. I wish the end weren’t as rushed, but I loved the fight between Albus and Grindelwald. I wish that credence had a bit more time in that ending as I think it’s plausible he won’t return in the next film, but I’m so thankful they made the twist to his place in the Dumbledore family.

But most of all, the magic felt fun and exciting, and brought back that OG HP spirit. Between the scoring and the use of subtle Easter eggs this was a great film.

I’m glad they brought on a second writer. JK is a novelist and it shows in her first two screenplays of the series. I feel like they were able to wonderfully adapt her work to a film friendly environment in this iteration. 10/10!

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Fantastic Beast: The Secrets of Dumbledore was such a good movie. As much as I love Johnny Depp and totally support him, I feel like this role just wasn’t for him. When Johnny depp was playing the character it just didn’t feel real, he just looked to insane for it to look like Dumbledore actually fell for him. (If that makes sense). Mads Mikkelsen did a great job in portraying his character. Mads already had the kind of charm and look that the character needed, he didn’t have to change his whole appearance to look like the character aged up. I get that the character is supposed to have white hair but it makes more sense for the character to look older and not exactly how he is supposed to look. Anyways, I watched this movie with some of my friends and we totally enjoyed it. It had such a good plot and you would never get bored. The movie had a bit of everything romance, adventure, thrill, ect. I 100% recommend it and I’m sure you’ll have a great time! Expand

Definitely my favorite one not just in the Fantastic Beasts franchise, but in the entire HP world (and I say it as a big HP fan)! It leaves you with something in your heart when you go out from the cinema. It is at the same time adventurous and deeply emotional, with powerful scenes, beautiful settings, funny moments, wonderful characters, but, first of all, a strong focus on the depths of human heart and the struggles which can take place in it. It is a movie about the choice between what we desire and what we have to do. The tormented love story between Dumbledore and Grindelwald, lying at the core of the movie, is poetic and heartbreaking, with the taste of a Greek tragedy. Jude Law and Mad Mikelsen are gigantic in their performances and have an incredibile chemistry together. They seem to have been born to play these two unhappy, torn lovers/foes. Watched the movie twice and I will soon watch it a third time. I warmly raccomend it! Don't let you be dissuaded by negative critics and Rowling haters. Sadly, a lot is biased about this movie, because of Johnny Depp being fired, and J.K. Rowling’s comments on SoMe.

Personally I have waited for this movie, and even I where afraid it was going to be terrible after they re-casted Grindlewald, but I feel like Mads Mikkelsen, brings more depth to the character, then Johnny Depp would be able to (Yes I know I’m going to get a lot of dislikes for this comment), but to be brutally honest Johnny Depp for me feels like the same character in every movie he has done, he will always have the same vibe that he had as Jack Sparrow, or for that matter that terrible Dracula movie he did.

In general the movie had a god plot, and normally I get bored by movies fast, they have to grab my attention, and that’s one of the reasons I’m always waiting to see them until they are on streaming platforms, it managed to keep my attention up to 90% of the time, and the story, feel good moments, heart acing moments really hit me in some way.

It's worth watching, especially if you aren’t biased by Johnny Depp being fired and J.K. Rowling’s comments on SoMe.

Mads also plays Grindewald brilliantly despite the disgraceful sacking of Depp. The characters are very engaging and a lot of them have strange motives or are just very funny. Overall, I think that this movie is very underrated and definitely worth watching. Expand

The story between Dumbledore and Grindelwald is so sad and so beautiful at the same time. This movie shows that their is still love from both sides. You also see that their is heartbreaks between the 2 lovers and that those people deal with it differently Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. There's still room for improvement, but overall The Secrets of Dumbledore is a big step back in the right direction for the franchise. The thing I enjoyed most about the film is that the beasts/magical creatures become bigger centerpieces in terms involvement and importance with the plot and moving it forward; something significantly lacking from the last film (Crimes of Grindelwald). The movie, though not perfectly, does a pretty good job at cleaning up the confusions, messes, and ambiguities left for the audience to solve and question from the last film and the trailers; better than the Rise of Skywalker did after The Last Jedi *cough cough*. It was also enjoyable getting to see the widest scope of places in the Wizarding World to date, whether it was the longer scenes in Berlin, Germany and Bhutan to snippets of many other places across the globe. I also enjoyed getting to see greater involvement from characters like Bunty, Eulalie "Lally" Hicks, and Aberforth Dumbledore, who only appeared very briefly in the Crimes of Grindelwald or not at all in the series prior, and the way character arcs were developed and even shined in this film (Jacob was the best of the bunch) was phenomenal. Special effects also were pleasingly excellent.

Now to the big elephant in the room; the actor change of Gellert Grindelwald from Johnny Depp (he's innocent) to Mads Mikkelsen. I do miss Johnny Depp and I believe the way he was let go from the franchise was wrong. That being said, I do think Mads Mikkelsen should've been cast as Grindelwald from the beginning. Though I did like much of Depp's portrayal as Grindelwald, it felt hard to take him as seriously sometimes as a villain when he was in that role; portrayal felt somewhat cartoony. But with Mads, you see the deepest and darkest side of Grindelwald yet; falling deeper into his cold, calculated psychopathy who takes great advantage of the socio-political, tense divide in the Wizarding World. Similar to the era's boiling rise of fascism and nationalism in the muggle world. The one criticism I have for the portrayal of Grindelwald is that though I did find one subtle clue, the film never really explains the significant appearance difference of Grindelwald between Crimes of Grindelwald and here, as Secrets of Dumbledore (1932) only takes place five years after Crimes of Grindelwald (1927). But overall, Mads Mikkelsen hit the mark as Grindelwald and then some.

I liked the callback and easter eggs that reference back to the original Harry Potter series, however it felt like there were a few things done with this and a couple other scenes in the film that seemed to break with traditional rules and canon set forth by the original series, which did feel off. My only other criticism of the film is that some of the attempted humor did fall flat, but that's the most minor part.

There's definitely things the film could've done and the series still could do better. With that being said, I'm glad to see The Secrets of Dumbledore doing the Fantastic Beasts series justice. Elevating Steve Kloves to the role of screenwriter really helped this film exceptionally and he, director David Yates, and the producers of the film did well to take the film, and the series [to its benefit] in a darker direction. I came into this film with reserved expectations and a degree of skepticism, but I think this movie definitely succeeded in pleasantly surprising me and overall saving the Fantastic Beasts series in order to [hopefully] finishing out with its last two planned movies.

Though like the second film. It forgets that Katherine Waterston’s Tina was a main character. I liked her chemistry with Eddie Redmayne in the first film. She hasn’t had anything to do since.
Due to everything more about young Dumbledore, Grindelwald, Newt’s brother and now Eulalie (Jessica Williams).
Since the movie didn’t make enough money for a 4th film. I am happy that this is sort of a conclusion. However, it is a forgettable conclusion that isn’t very epic.

The film succeeds in the unlikely task of putting patches in the plot errors of the other chapters, especially its predecessor. The film in general is also done quite well and the replacement of the villain doesn't weigh too much even if you notice a lot the difference in the ways of doing it. The film is really slightly too slow in many places, but it has goosebumps that drag all the other scenes in a beautiful and very well done way. There are just two good things about this: the animal scenes that generate a certain affective appeal for the creatures and Jacob as comic relief at some point.
The movie has a giant plot problem, unnecessary scenes that don't add anything to the story and that have only two functions: spending money on CGI - which by the way shocked me to see this in the Wizarding World, many "strange" effects - and time of screen. Not to mention situations that could easily be resolved with a "magic touch".
The most intriguing part of the story is the political context, but it also fails miserably because it is poorly fleshed out. The addition of Mads Mikkelsen was perfect to play the "villain", yes, in quotes because there were few moments that I could feel a real threat from the character, maybe it's not even Mikkelsen's fault but the whole atmosphere of the film.
In short, we are heading towards a worrying end of the franchise where we seem to be going around and around and not understanding what is happening. I predict that they will choose to solve everything in the last movie. In addition, Dumbledore's secrets were only a surprise to those who are not fans of the saga.

Meh again.

'Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore' isn't any worse than the two films it follows, which is a minor positive at least. I'd actually put it above 1 but just below 2, though I'm splitting hairs really. I just feel all three are simply missing that little something extra, yet I'm not sure exactly what.

I also feel the same about the cast as I do for the preceding instalments, with the likes of Eddie Redmayne and Jude Law not doing much for me; though Law is at his best in the role here. I will say, however, that I did mildly enjoy Jessica Williams' performance.

The pacing is a tad iffy, if nothing super slow. The ending does feel delayed, I would've personally cut a decent chunk of it to be honest. The dialogue and humour is average, but one scene involving Pickett and Teddy did make me laugh in fairness.

All in all, I'm undoubtedly underwhelmed by these spin-offs/prequels to the great 'Harry Potter' franchise.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Newt and his animals really need to stay out of the Dumbledore vs Grindelwald conflict, it really muddies the tone of the movie from the dark gritty civil war to cute fun animal scenes. Unlike the previous movie, this movie at least makes fantastic beasts an integral plot to the movie, that being the magic deer to determine elections. Doing so makes the movie stupid though, like if everyone watching the twitch live stream at the end of the movie knows Grindelwald is lying about the deer bowing to him then how is he going to have any followers for the next two movies? Jacob, Newt, and Newt's assistant are constantly being shoehorned into these movies for no reason. Why put a muggle in major danger doing wizard quests against the most dangerous wizards? It seems Dumbledore is very irresponsible and not thinking straight. Let's get a muggle to do a wizard cop's job and hope he doesn't die like Jacob should've stopped being relevant after the first movie. Let the man bake and keep him out of wizarding problems for once. Hell, why not get Tina to replace Jacob? She's a wizard and a wizard cop she's an instant upgrade. I'm glad they got rid of Nagini, she really has no reason to be in any of these movies besides an "Oh look it's a character from Harry Potter" moment. I have no hate towards Eddie, Depp, or Mads, but I just want Newt to have his own separate TV show/movie not connected to the wizard war. Mads does a way better job at being Grindelwald than Depp. Important aspects like the blood pact, Queenie's redemption, and Credence's arc, were all rushed in this movie and concluded too soon. Overall, a decent movie if you turn your brain off, but if you start to think about the plot it all starts crumbling like Voldemort at the end of Deathly Hallows. Expand

I am not sureThe Secrets of Dumbledore occasionally has fantastic set pieces including one with crab like creatures as well as the ending where it actually dramatically works. It is visually stunning and the production design is beautiful. I am not sure why with a title called 'The SECRETS of Dumbledore', the film doesn't have any compelling reveals about the character. James Newton Howard's score is magical although it might be the weakest of the trilogy. Unfortunately the dialogue scenes are just not interesting and while the characters are charming(although there are way too many characters) ,and Mads Mikkelsen is great as Grindelwald. they don't have much to do. These films should be fun but there are just too many portions of the film where it drags; too heavy on plot but too little intrigue or stakes. The beasts are well incorporated into the plot though and again, the ending is quite strong. It is better than Crimes of Grindelwald but definitely not as magical as the first Fantastic Beasts. Sadly, they go on to become enemies in the battle for rulership of the wizard world. Eddie Redmayne's character returns with his much smaller menagerie of fantastical creatures and a few other characters are added to the mix. The occasional magic moments are the only visually interesting aspects. Otherwise, there's lots of dialogue and drama. Sure, the cast is blessed with fine performers, but there are simply too many long conversations that are meant to settle the story. The first film in the series got 3/5 stars. The sequel dropped to 2 stars. This 3rd (and rumored final) release doesn't do any better. Expand

Don't get me wrong, There were positives to this movie. Mads and Jude were amazing and absolutely stole every scene they were in, The action scenes were sadly brief but enjoyable and I really liked the ending. However, the negatives far outweigh them.

What became obvious fairly early on is that they were clearly treating this as a film bother as a continuation and as an ending. It wrapped everything up and left no question unanswered should this be the final film of the series yet it also is open-ended and could easily be revisited down the line. TBH, I expect the former to happen and that this is the end of the Fantastic Beasts series.

In The Crimes of Grindelwald I waited the whole film to see those crimes and they never appeared.
This time in The Secrets of Dumbledore I kept waiting for those secrets, but they didn't show up either.
I mean, there's a confirmation about a certain character in that family but that's it.

As with its predecessor, it's become very clear that J.K. Rowling doesn't have enough material for this prequel saga and she's basically filling in the gaps with what she can.

With this third instalment, the total absence of direction is the constant feature of what we are seeing on screen.

With the exception of a more action-focused tone, a distinctly fascist flavor clearly inspired by our present day that is infused into the character of Gellert Grindelwald, and that Mads Mikkelsen playing him is a monumental improvement over Johnny Depp; Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore is an improvement over its predecessor, but it's also another disappointing addition to the franchise of the Wizarding World that fails to capture the magic and grace that made the Harry Potter films so famous.

More than that, it's obvious. JK Rowling's classic plot twists don't excite, although the fan services work more in this one than in the previous one.

Mads Mikkelsen is a welcome addition to the cast and manages to intimidate just by looking.

Maybe JK should focus more on writing her stories than wasting time on Twitter. By the way, the film explores Dumbledore and Grindelwald's passion well.

The film pays tribute to Brazilian fans, but fails to save one of the greatest franchises of all time.

Technically it's beautiful, but I couldn't help but notice Newt Scamander's hand holding 'nothing' in the opening sequence.

The success of the 20th anniversary special of “The Philosopher's Stone” only proves one thing. It's time to stop telling a story from the past and put Daniel Radcliffe, Emma Watson and Rupert Grint back on the big screen, even if we don't like The Cursed Child very much.

“Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore” was… Fun, but messy. It turned out to be the happy medium between the first and second movie like I expected it would, but it still kinda fell flat. I honestly don’t have too much to say about the movie (or the “Fantastic Beasts” series). It was a “political spy movie” with wizard stuff sprinkled in.

I am to understand that this is supposed to be a series of five movies. I can’t imagine them being able to squeeze 2 more movies out of this story. Everything was sort of wrapped up in “The Secrets of Dumbledore,” and two more movies would feel like a HUGE stretch. Maybe end it on the fourth film.

He never really does anything too unexpected. Cool visuals, cute animals, but it fell kinda flat. I enjoyed the movie but I would not watch a second time. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. My problem with the movie can be summed up with the fact that Dumbledore, a man who let everything in the movie happen because of his relationship with his ex, a man who was willing to let a teenager die who only survived because of contrivance, was deemed "pure of heart" by the magical deer thing by the end of the movie. Fantastic Beasts 3 is OK, more bad than good.
Nothing much happens. The story is boring, the setting is stale, it is too dark, there is no adventure just a bunch of adults chasing after a brooding, disturbed teenager and it just goes round and round in circles.
Why not make a GOOD movie with an actual PLOT, an exciting adventure, an exciting setting, a start middle and end. You have the best franchise on the planet, an unlimited budget and this is all we get? Why?

Fire David Yates already, get a proper script writer to write for J.K. Rowling so she can just write the outline. If it were up to me I would find a totally different subject matter, i.e. actually tracking down one of these so-called 'fantastic beasts' in the wild. Forget the whole Grindewald/Credence ark and put Newt on an actual adventure.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. If you ask why this movie exists then it quickly comes to mind that its solemnly for finance reasons. I cant think of another reason why this movie had to be made. The Plot is barely existing, it has an idea but not an elaborated plot as normal movies. The Idea why there needs to be an undertaking is conveyed to the audience but never the reasoning or the actual threat. The whole base idea is Dumbledore and Grindelwald have been more than close (by the way, dumbledoore is gay) and have created a "bond" that would prevent one from stopping or killing the other .. so dumbledoore needs Newt (why he needs a magizoologist? noone gets to know) his brother (a high ranking ministry of magic official with ZERO usage of that fact) for also no obvious reason apart from one horrible unlogical rescue scene where Newt goes into a german magic "Prison" where prisoners are obviously killed and eaten by a giant Magic Scorpion and its Children. Why the guys capturing Thesaurus (Newts brother) didnt simply end him is not explained. but its probably that Newt can do some "Things with magic beasts" .. and the entire Arc is utterly pointless. Same with Jackob, the Baker, who is also granted a NON Magic wand by Dumbledoore for also no noticeable reason.so the show drips along and the viewer is not kept in the loop how the cast got the idea for the next step or why and how. also Esra miller has a nice character but in the end is not really utilized apart from two hit jobs, that are poorly executed and ofc fail. The bad guys are massively in numbers and disappear once they are not needed anymore, tracelessly . so everything is flayling in some directions an there is hardly any line visible where the story goes... in the beginning Grindlewald is enemy number one , then all charges are dropped against him, why, how , through what? noone knows. The he immediately gets set up to run for magic president. in an environment where you had two rivaling factions, you suddenly, out of nowhere get his , the third faction of loads of people in the street. this is just awfull, no drive, no plot, no visibility, weird choices, non utilized characters that suddenly jump into super important action. And so on.. so no this is not a movie that needed to be made .. the first fanatstic beasts was awesome this one is not even a fantastic beasts movie.. its just "another harry potter franchise movie".. plus there is noticeable influx of overly use of magic. in Harry potter , magic was scarce and confined , now its suddenly used casually to show things and more that were not needed . same with the "magic fights" which are more like lightsaber fights in star wars.. this is a giant nope from me..
