+Think they are doing a good job with Dumbledore overall

-The whole fantastic beasts angle is completely shoehorned in and nonsensical, a baby animal decides the elections?
-Uninteresting plotting and direction

Very slow and boring missing the magic you used to get with Harry Potter. Weird woke parts within 5mins to please a certain group so annoying. Mads was amazing but no reason to replace Johnny. Overall I hope this is the last of these!

In The Crimes of Grindelwald I waited the whole film to see those crimes and they never appeared.
This time in The Secrets of Dumbledore I kept waiting for those secrets, but they didn't show up either.
I mean, there's a confirmation about a certain character in that family but that's it.

As with its predecessor, it's become very clear that J.K. Rowling doesn't have enough material for this prequel saga and she's basically filling in the gaps with what she can.

With this third instalment, the total absence of direction is the constant feature of what we are seeing on screen.

With the exception of a more action-focused tone, a distinctly fascist flavor clearly inspired by our present day that is infused into the character of Gellert Grindelwald, and that Mads Mikkelsen playing him is a monumental improvement over Johnny Depp; Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore is an improvement over its predecessor, but it's also another disappointing addition to the franchise of the Wizarding World that fails to capture the magic and grace that made the Harry Potter films so famous.

More than that, it's obvious. JK Rowling's classic plot twists don't excite, although the fan services work more in this one than in the previous one.

Mads Mikkelsen is a welcome addition to the cast and manages to intimidate just by looking.

Maybe JK should focus more on writing her stories than wasting time on Twitter. By the way, the film explores Dumbledore and Grindelwald's passion well.

The film pays tribute to Brazilian fans, but fails to save one of the greatest franchises of all time.

Technically it's beautiful, but I couldn't help but notice Newt Scamander's hand holding 'nothing' in the opening sequence.

The success of the 20th anniversary special of “The Philosopher's Stone” only proves one thing. It's time to stop telling a story from the past and put Daniel Radcliffe, Emma Watson and Rupert Grint back on the big screen, even if we don't like The Cursed Child very much.

Fantastic Beasts & the Secret Crimes of Grindelwald & Dumbledore is back with another instalment that isn’t quite great but it’s not awful either, it’s a painfully average film that I’d only really recommend to fans of the series right now,Fantastic Beasts & the Secret Crimes of Grindelwald & Dumbledore is back with another instalment that isn’t quite great but it’s not awful either, it’s a painfully average film that I’d only really recommend to fans of the series right now, that is if there are any left.

Newt Scamander (Eddie Redmayne) and his suitcase full of magical creatures are back showing up in the most inconvenient times and locations during Grindelwald’s (Mads Mikkelsen) attempt to seize power and begin war with the muggles. Albus Dumbledore (Jude Law) must now assemble a team of unlikely heroes to stop his nemesis.

The Fantastic Beasts franchise has continued to suffer from the same mistakes of the previous two movies. Very much the way The Hobbit movies were stretched out into an unnecessary trilogy, The Secrets of Dumbledore has fallen into the same trap, which makes you question why this whole franchise exists in the first place. Fantastic Beasts is a few ideas dragged out into five feature length movies in which we’re only just past the half way mark, continually building you to the epic showdown between two of the world’s most powerful wizards, Dumbledore and Grindelwald, but Eddie and his suitcase are there too for some reason.

Yes Eddie is still the main character but I’d argue that the far more interesting story lies between Jude Law and Mads Mikkelsen. There are however plenty of adorable CGI creatures to look at in between all the drama. In case you’re wondering, yes the visuals are stunning but I’d expect nothing less at this stage. Sadly a few cute CGI creatures and the onscreen presence of Mads Mikkelsen isn’t enough to save the film.

I’d happily re-watch the Harry Potter movies on a loop until I die whereas with Fantastic Beasts I don’t have anywhere near the desire to ever see them again. Perhaps in the hands of a different director these could have been better movies as all the right ingredients are there, unfortunately it just doesn’t come together as well as it should. Also that’s difficult when it’s trapped in the massive shadow of Harry Potter and the sense of awe and wonder that created. Sure the magical world has been expanded yet again and it’s impressive to see the magical universe and all that comes with that but it’s still lacking.

This is a franchise that desperately tries to fill the void left when Harry Potter ended and honestly at this rate if they decided not to bother with the sequels I don’t think too many people would be upset about it. Recommended for the fans of the other Fantastic Beasts movies, just don’t expect it to be anywhere near the standard of Harry Potter.

It turned out to be the happy medium between the first and second movie like I expected it would, but it still kinda fell flat. I honestly don’t have too much to say about the movie (or the “Fantastic Beasts” series). It was a “political spy movie” with wizard stuff sprinkled in.

I am to understand that this is supposed to be a series of five movies. I can’t imagine them being able to squeeze 2 more movies out of this story. Everything was sort of wrapped up in “The Secrets of Dumbledore,” and two more movies would feel like a HUGE stretch. Maybe end it on the fourth film.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Newt and his animals really need to stay out of the Dumbledore vs Grindelwald conflict, it really muddies the tone of the movie from the dark gritty civil war to cute fun animal scenes. Unlike the previous movie, this movie at least makes fantastic beasts an integral plot to the movie, that being the magic deer to determine elections. Doing so makes the movie stupid though, like if everyone watching the twitch live stream at the end of the movie knows Grindelwald is lying about the deer bowing to him then how is he going to have any followers for the next two movies? Jacob, Newt, and Newt's assistant are constantly being shoehorned into these movies for no reason. Why put a muggle in major danger doing wizard quests against the most dangerous wizards? It seems Dumbledore is very irresponsible and not thinking straight. Let's get a muggle to do a wizard cop's job and hope he doesn't die like Jacob should've stopped being relevant after the first movie. Let the man bake and keep him out of wizarding problems for once. Hell, why not get Tina to replace Jacob? She's a wizard and a wizard cop she's an instant upgrade. I'm glad they got rid of Nagini, she really has no reason to be in any of these movies besides an "Oh look it's a character from Harry Potter" moment. I have no hate towards Eddie, Depp, or Mads, but I just want Newt to have his own separate TV show/movie not connected to the wizard war. Mads does a way better job at being Grindelwald than Depp. Important aspects like the blood pact, Queenie's redemption, and Credence's arc, were all rushed in this movie and concluded too soon. Overall, a decent movie if you turn your brain off, but if you start to think about the plot it all starts crumbling like Voldemort at the end of Deathly Hallows. Expand

Sadly, they go on to become enemies in the battle for rulership of the wizard world. Eddie Redmayne's character returns with his much smaller menagerie of fantastical creatures and a few other characters are added to the mix. The occasional magic moments are the only visually interesting aspects. Otherwise, there's lots of dialogue and drama. Sure, the cast is blessed with fine performers, but there are simply too many long conversations that are meant to settle the story. The first film in the series got 3/5 stars. The sequel dropped to 2 stars. This 3rd (and rumored final) release doesn't do any better. Expand

There were so many unnecessary moments that felt out of place and so many characters that were needlessly added that it all felt like a jumbled mess at times.

Don't get me wrong, There were positives to this movie. Mads and Jude were amazing and absolutely stole every scene they were in, The action scenes were sadly brief but enjoyable and I really liked the ending. However, the negatives far outweigh them.

What became obvious fairly early on is that they were clearly treating this as a film bother as a continuation and as an ending. It wrapped everything up and left no question unanswered should this be the final film of the series yet it also is open-ended and could easily be revisited down the line. TBH, I expect the former to happen and that this is the end of the Fantastic Beasts series.

There are just two good things about this: the animal scenes that generate a certain affective appeal for the creatures and Jacob as comic relief at some point.
The movie has a giant plot problem, unnecessary scenes that don't add anything to the story and that have only two functions: spending money on CGI - which by the way shocked me to see this in the Wizarding World, many "strange" effects - and time of screen. Not to mention situations that could easily be resolved with a "magic touch".
The most intriguing part of the story is the political context, but it also fails miserably because it is poorly fleshed out. The addition of Mads Mikkelsen was perfect to play the "villain", yes, in quotes because there were few moments that I could feel a real threat from the character, maybe it's not even Mikkelsen's fault but the whole atmosphere of the film.
In short, we are heading towards a worrying end of the franchise where we seem to be going around and around and not understanding what is happening. I predict that they will choose to solve everything in the last movie. In addition, Dumbledore's secrets were only a surprise to those who are not fans of the saga.

Meh again.

'Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore' isn't any worse than the two films it follows, which is a minor positive at least. I'd actually put it above 1 but just below 2, though I'm splitting hairs really. I just feel all three are simply missing that little something extra, yet I'm not sure exactly what.

I also feel the same about the cast as I do for the preceding instalments, with the likes of Eddie Redmayne and Jude Law not doing much for me; though Law is at his best in the role here. I will say, however, that I did mildly enjoy Jessica Williams' performance.

The pacing is a tad iffy, if nothing super slow. The ending does feel delayed, I would've personally cut a decent chunk of it to be honest. The dialogue and humour is average, but one scene involving Pickett and Teddy did make me laugh in fairness.

All in all, I'm undoubtedly underwhelmed by these spin-offs/prequels to the great 'Harry Potter' franchise.

Nothing much happens. The story is boring, the setting is stale, it is too dark, there is no adventure just a bunch of adults chasing after a brooding, disturbed teenager and it just goes round and round in circles.
Why not make a GOOD movie with an actual PLOT, an exciting adventure, an exciting setting, a start middle and end. You have the best franchise on the planet, an unlimited budget and this is all we get? Why?

Fire David Yates already, get a proper script writer to write for J.K. Rowling so she can just write the outline. If it were up to me I would find a totally different subject matter, i.e. actually tracking down one of these so-called 'fantastic beasts' in the wild. Forget the whole Grindewald/Credence ark and put Newt on an actual adventure.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. If you ask why this movie exists then it quickly comes to mind that its solemnly for finance reasons. I cant think of another reason why this movie had to be made. The Plot is barely existing, it has an idea but not an elaborated plot as normal movies. The Idea why there needs to be an undertaking is conveyed to the audience but never the reasoning or the actual threat. The whole base idea is Dumbledore and Grindelwald have been more than close (by the way, dumbledoore is gay) and have created a "bond" that would prevent one from stopping or killing the other .. so dumbledoore needs Newt (why he needs a magizoologist? noone gets to know) his brother (a high ranking ministry of magic official with ZERO usage of that fact) for also no obvious reason apart from one horrible unlogical rescue scene where Newt goes into a german magic "Prison" where prisoners are obviously killed and eaten by a giant Magic Scorpion and its Children. Why the guys capturing Thesaurus (Newts brother) didnt simply end him is not explained. but its probably that Newt can do some "Things with magic beasts" .. and the entire Arc is utterly pointless. Same with Jackob, the Baker, who is also granted a NON Magic wand by Dumbledoore for also no noticeable reason.so the show drips along and the viewer is not kept in the loop how the cast got the idea for the next step or why and how. also Esra miller has a nice character but in the end is not really utilized apart from two hit jobs, that are poorly executed and ofc fail. The bad guys are massively in numbers and disappear once they are not needed anymore, tracelessly . so everything is flayling in some directions an there is hardly any line visible where the story goes... in the beginning Grindlewald is enemy number one , then all charges are dropped against him, why, how , through what? noone knows. The he immediately gets set up to run for magic president. in an environment where you had two rivaling factions, you suddenly, out of nowhere get his , the third faction of loads of people in the street. this is just awfull, no drive, no plot, no visibility, weird choices, non utilized characters that suddenly jump into super important action. And so on.. so no this is not a movie that needed to be made .. the first fanatstic beasts was awesome this one is not even a fantastic beasts movie.. its just "another harry potter franchise movie".. plus there is noticeable influx of overly use of magic. in Harry potter , magic was scarce and confined , now its suddenly used casually to show things and more that were not needed . same with the "magic fights" which are more like lightsaber fights in star wars.. this is a giant nope from me.. I am not sureThe Secrets of Dumbledore occasionally has fantastic set pieces including one with crab like creatures as well as the ending where it actually dramatically works. It is visually stunning and the production design is beautiful. I am not sure why with a title called 'The SECRETS of Dumbledore', the film doesn't have any compelling reveals about the character. James Newton Howard's score is magical although it might be the weakest of the trilogy. Unfortunately the dialogue scenes are just not interesting and while the characters are charming(although there are way too many characters) ,and Mads Mikkelsen is great as Grindelwald. they don't have much to do. These films should be fun but there are just too many portions of the film where it drags; too heavy on plot but too little intrigue or stakes. The beasts are well incorporated into the plot though and again, the ending is quite strong. It is better than Crimes of Grindelwald but definitely not as magical as the first Fantastic Beasts.
