The first had a .. Something .. Bigger than this one lost. It remains a very good film, but registered in a series which makes raising the stakes is not only on a single film, but several. Harry Potter will end up being the highest rated film universe in the world if this quality is kept end to end. An iron hand in a velvet glove. This universe in addition to being magical allows us to caress the life of Dumbledor and make us doubt the real main character. Is he dumbledor from the beginning?

Personally, I am one of many teens who read all the books and saw all the films but I was very disappointed with “Fantastic Beasts”. However, I decided to watch this film and see if there would be any improvement here. And I'm glad I did. Far from being wonderful, its much better than its predecessor.

After the events of the first film, Newt Scamander is sent by Dumbledore to Paris in order to look for Credence, who survived. Also alive and gone missing is the fearsome Gellert Grindelwald, responsible for many deaths and atrocities, committed to starting a war for global dominance in which sorcerers are to dominate non-sorcerers.

Its a generally better film than its predecessor, as it has a lighter pace and takes much less time to develop. The story told seems to have gained a logical thread and that's a good thing. The use and appearance of magical creatures was not as intense as in the first film, and this may have helped to focus the film on the story which, until now, was too weak and uninteresting. However, too much creativity is also a problem as some ideas in the plot end up useless. The development of the characters improved and the material given to the actors was certainly better. David Yates did a good job and takes advantage of all his experience, as he directed the most adult and developed films in the Harry Potter franchise.

The cast, certainly due to a better script and material to work on, achieved better results. Despite all this, it continues to make unforgivable mistakes. Some sub-plots, sequences and even characters, like Flamel for example, are totally unnecessary. Eddie Redmayne finally manages to give Scamander a certain attitude and leadership, although he is still uncharismatic and boring. Katherine Waterston also improves here. Callum Turner is good, Zoë Kravitz was a good addition to the role of the psychologically complex Leta Lestrange and Jude Law shone as the intelligent and young Dumbledore. Less positive was Dan Fogler, who is no longer as funny as in the first film. If this ends up being compensated by gaining dramatic depth, the film gives a terrible excuse to justify his presence, given that the character had been “obliviated”, that is, had his memories erased at the end of the first film. On the negative side, I would highlight the poor performance of Alison Sudol. It was not her fault but the fact is that her sweet and stupid character stopped being sweet and became just stupid. Finally, we need to talk more about Johnny Depp. If the cameo in the first film achieved to hide what his participation was going to be, this film shows us the greatness of the actor in the role of another fearsome villain, who is not far behind Voldemort in malice and cruelty. The actor is good and brought his character to life in a brilliant way. If everything goes well for Depp in the films that follow, this could become one of the most outstanding characters in his career, who has left us great jobs before.

Technically, this is a very visual film, thanks to tons of very high quality CGI, as we would expect in the Harry Potter universe. Cinematography has good colors, a good use of light and dark and clear footage. To add aesthetic quality we have the charm of the Thirties, with its props and clothings. Much of the film is set between London and Paris, with a brief and unnecessary passage through Hogwarts, and the sets, in all these moments, were meticulously done. The soundtrack, by James Newton Howard, is good and epic, but not surprising.

I liked the tone, I liked the pacing and the backstories. I liked the expositions of new characters. I am super interested to learn more about how Nagini's story will her to being the right hand man of Voldemort. I felt like a couple lines were forced, such as "Grindelwald doesn't value that which is simple." I get that it was a recall to what Dumbledore says about Voldemort to Harry, but I felt like there was no motivation for that line since Newt would've had no reason to say this based on Newt's experiences with Grindelwald. There were some interesting things that could potentially set up some plot holes in the Potterverse. And I would say that I am not worried at all, but Cursed Child made plenty of mistakes in terms of plot direction that cheapened or poked holes in the Potterverse.

I actually like Grindelwald movie version more than Voldemort movie version (book version is a different story), he seems more sophisticated and his motives more reasonable.

Overall, I liked the tone. And felt encouraged by this installment. It seems to be following the Potter series in that it improves with each installment. I just really hope she does not poke holes in timelines, or plot points..

This follow up film features plenty of decent special effects and lots of CGI creatures, as was the case in the original film. I particularly enjoyed the choreographed scenes.

The plot is a bit confusing, which didn't entirely surprise me given its a 'wizarding world' (i.e. Harry Potter universe) film and I've never been interested in Harry Potter but I watched it as I enjoyed the first 'Fantastic Beasts' film when I saw it on TV and I also enjoyed this follow up. There's a decent cast present, with Jude Law and Johnny Depp among them, plus of course Eddie Redmayne as Newt Scamander. I enjoyed his performance and found it a quite watchable and indeed entertaining film, even though I can't say I fully followed the ins and outs of every plot aspect but that doesn't always entirely matter. From what I've seen, a lot of people weren't much impressed with this film due to the plot being a bit scatter-brained. This didn't overly bother me, as I say and I did enjoy the special effects, although sometimes its more of an issue, such as with full out action films, if the main plot seems utterly implausible then it can put me off the whole film, though I really enjoyed watching this film. It's a nice enough form of escapism and so I'd recommend it for that purpose, although I'm not sure I'd say its better than the first film, its certainly not bad at all. Its surprisingly engrossing really and the CGI creatures have a real charm to them, so I felt, its just not a film to overly analyse or take especially seriously I suppose. I certainly enjoyed it more than I didn't.

The acting is very well done, but the visual effects are a little overwhelming here and there. Another thing that annoyed me while watching is that the script paints the magic and the spells to be way more elaborate and way more advanced than the magic depicted in the Harry Potter series, which is supposed to take place around 60 years later. However, the film still does encapsulate that JK Rowling magical feeling, and it's undoubtedly a step forward in the franchise. Expand

In that sense the movie did really well, the large majority of the movie made sense and it was very interesting story. However, the excessive use of "subplots" was slightly confusing especially since the movie spanned over a relatively short period of time. The visuals were brilliant, the actors and actresses from the first film played their parts well (especially Grindelwald and Newt), fantastic beasts were displayed and shocking revelations created tension and hooked the audience for the next movie. The movie was reasonably long, but, due to the brief period of time it took place in, I suspect much of the audience was left unsatisfied. However, being a Potterhead and a huge fan of the franchise I love the movie and can't hate it. 9/10 Expand

It is kind of: a setup the villain movie. I didn't mind the quantity of information but I think the structure of movie wasn't fitting so well this time. The flashbacks had a tendency to broke the rhythm. Not that they were useless but the editing around it wasn't well decided. The relation between Credence and Nagani was way better with the deleted scenes. I felt it was a poor decision to cut them. I give it a 70%. I think the film has a lot of bad rhythm but it is still interesting to watch for the characters and the lore. And some of the deleted scenes bring a bit more to the table. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Having given the latest instalment in J.K. Rowling’s magical world as unbiased a viewing as was possible, considering the scathing reviews, I would like to submit my own take on the film. I am neither a professional film critic nor a particularly rabid fan of the Harry Potter universe; however, I enjoyed this film for the reasons that any patient reader will discover below.
As a film, this story had only four goals: The Scheherazade goal, the Empire Strikes back goal, the revelation of familial heritage goal (also present in Empire Strikes Back), and the retrieval of a powerful, sacred object goal. In those goals this film succeeded and did so in an exciting, suspenseful, and entertaining fashion.
As the reader may recall, Scheherazade is the fictional narrator of the Arabian Nights tales who craftily kept herself from being cut in half the morning after her wedding night (and for 1,000 nights thereafter) by telling her husband stories and leaving off with a cliff-hanger before drifting off to sleep each night. Rowling and Yates have to avoid the literary executioner’s block by keeping us involved and excited about what is going to happen next. They accomplished this goal in two short scenes at that end of the film.
We all remember the shock of the Empire Strikes Back, our hero’s decent into Hell, the rise of the victorious bad guys, and the defeat of the forces of good. This is a standard trope that adds a little bit of realism to an otherwise fantastical “good always triumphs over evil” boring story. We see evil triumph all the time in the real world; and to lend a little of this realism to a story gives it a scent of veracity to the tale and keeps us hanging on to see the end. Despite this shout out to realism and the reference to the ugly reality of two world wars, this is not a Twentieth Century post-modern realism story. It is rather a Nineteenth Century heroic fantasy on the scale of The Prisoner of Zenda (just as Star Wars was). We all know that good will triumph in the end, it is just the details of how that triumph is achieved that hold our interest. Admittedly, the Dumbledore character is Homeric in its origins, a somewhat tragic, conflicted character of ambiguous means versus ends motivations and deep scars from past regrets. Fans who wish that Albus Dumbledore would just settle in as a kind, avuncular mentor and protector miss a depth that Homer gave all his heroes and villains. Long before post-modern authors thought they invented it, Homer recognized that people are complicated and heroic motivations often ambiguous. Let us not be confused here, Newt Scamander is not the hero of this story. The hero is Albus Dumbledore.
This brings us to the retrieval of the powerful and sacred object: The blood-oath amulet that the Niffler steals from Grindelwald and which Newt returns to Dumbledore. This is the talisman that prevents Dumbledore from confronting Grindelwald directly (and explains why he had pursued that confrontation through surrogates heretofore). This is a Samson’s Hair type of device. It makes Dumbledore vulnerable, much like Achilles’ heel or Superman’s Kryptonite, which is necessary because a perfectly invulnerable hero is boring. However, there has been established by the late reveal in the movie another chink in Dumbledore’s armor. This chink is the true identity of Creedence Barebone as one Aurelias Dumbledore.
The reveal of the true heritage served several narrative purposes. Firstly, it relieved a tension that had been built during the entire film regarding Creedence’s true identity. Secondly, the reveal provided a cliff-hanger to keep fans interested in the next installment. Most importantly, it heaped on the Kryptonite for Dumbledore. He may be in possession of the blood-oath amulet that he may or may not be able to destroy, but there is now another very powerful shield between him and Grindelwald and their final battle.
The next three films will no doubt be about how that shield is breached, as well as other minor fan service narrative devices about reuniting Jacob and Queenie, throwing Newt and Tina together despite themselves, and solving all the apparent continuity errors Rowling teased.
This was a well-crafted effort, not without editing errors. It succeeded in making me want to see the next chapter.

I really dug the change in style from the first movie (even though I liked the previous iteration of this growing franchise), Yates is once again able to adapt his direction to the circumstances of the script (as we've seen him do with the Harry Potter franchise).

The major issue I have with the movie is its script, which feels disjointed, even sloppy at times, and overcomplicates a simple story by trying to mess with its audience.

Yet I enjoyed the ride and am on board for the next opus.

At start a little disclaimer: I've loved the HP books and watched all the movies but so far I'm not the biggest fan of fantastic beasts and ended pretty much bored watching the first film, because I did expect too much.

This movie is at first and foremost exploring Rowlings wizarding world and it's past respectively. This series is a love letter to this magic universe more than everything else and it's not interested in telling a story as quick as possible. It's more like the Hobbit trilogy, with more depth added to it, because Rowling is involved.

I think what made this movie one of the best experiences this year for me have been the seats next to me. Because both male adults in their 20s were so immersed, that they actually tried to support Newt Scamander vocally more than once. The movie is entertaining and promising and I think after this two movie introduction, I'm on the train to explore this world even further. I'm also thankful that I've seen this in 3D because those effects are going to look bad once I watch this again on Netflix someday.

In short: immersing, promising, entertaining
=> The title is misleading though

I did enjoy it. It has quite different structure than other big movies you often see in cinemas, and that kept me interested while the story was moving on.
Not better than the previous movie, but still good and interesting!

There has been a lot of flack on the chronological time line. One has to remember that wizards do not conform to muggles time.
I am impressed how the film is unwinding especially with the unraveling of Credence story. Pay attention because here is the real story.
Would I recommend it. Yes

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. An amazing movie that blew my mind with it's expansions to the potter universe. Acting and special effects were perfect, Jude Law was great as Dumbledore and Johnny Depp as Grindelwald.
The expansions of the harry potter universe were really cool, like the blood oath of Dumbledore and Grindelwald or Credence maybe being a brother of Dumbledore or whatever that meant in the end, we'll see in the next one. The Story on how Grindelwald gathers power is really awesome and Newt and Tina's story goes really well to that and the same with Jacob and Queenie. A mind blowing, emotional movie. Really happy with it!

Not a single time I was confused. Avengers can have 50 characters but critics still love them LOL. It’s just non-sense. Amazing visuals, beautiful score and great actors. My only complaint would be that yes, it’s a filler episode, but still a great one. I enjoyed it more than the first one. The bad reviews are delusional. Expand

And there's so much information crammed into this movie that it seems like they are quickly jumping from one thing to the next without really letting us digest what we have seen. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. As a Potterhead, this movie is an incredible addition to the story and overall saga, but the movie itself is a mixed bag and I see why critics don't like it that well. So to Potterheads, this movie is a 9/10, but to the general audience, this movie is a 6/10. I'll explain why below as I mention what I liked and what I disliked from the movie (its ups and downs).

Ups:
+ The Performances (not one single actor in the movie did a bad performance)
+ The Action Sequences (from Grindelwald's escape to the final battle, this movie's action sequences were terrific to watch)
+ The New Beasts
+ The Soundtrack
+ The Visual Effects
+ Going back to Hogwarts
+ The new characters (Dumbledore was the best and I really liked Leta's character)
+ The Comedy + The Production Design

Downs:
- Too Many Characters (I feel like this movie was too crowded and unlike Infinity War, which had over 40 characters, this movie didn't manage to juggle them, mostly because more than half of the characters were new ones)
- Too Many Subplots
- Some references to the Potter Saga felt forced (I liked Hogwarts, the Deathly Hallows mention and even the Mirror of Erised, but why was Nagini there or Flamel or even Fawkes at the end. Oh and McGonagall was also a fun addition)
- It feels rushed at times
- Newt doesn't feel like the main character
- No interactions between Tina and Queenie or Newt and Credence
- The Aurellius Twist

Katherine Waterston just doesn't work for me, but luckily enough there are a lot of acting performances to make up for that, with Zoë Kravitz, Dan Fogler and Alison Sudol as pleasant suprises between the force of Johnny Depp and Jude Law. I don't have to go into Eddie Redmayne, who brings life to every character he plays in a beautiful way. The movie itself was all in all amusing, and sets up for what could very well be a really entertaining new chapter in the Wizzarding World. Last, to everyone who got on J.K. I assume these 3 middle ones will be just filler bridge i think leading up to the grand finale 5th one. It's not a bad film by any stretch of the imagination as they introduce new characters, new creatures and expand the story of Creedence .
He actually drags the film down a bit because he has no personality and the actor doesn't add anything to make him interesting .
The film has interesting locations and scenery and the amount of detail in the real and wizardly world is amazing .
There are twists and turns in the interactions of the characters a bit like a soap opera.
All in all it's a '7' for me and i'll watch it again for sure.

Everyone says the story is darker and too complicated, but if you can step back for the briefest of moments and understand that this is a 5 part series, things become clearer. JK is weaving a plot arc across 5 action packed movies, (with no novel-backer to fill in gaps) so you can understand that there will be certain subplots that may seem a bit unclear at the moment, but clarity will be given with each installment. If we knew all of the answers now, would you come back as see the other movies? I mean, if you knew Darth Vader was Luke's father in Episode 4, would you have come back for Episodes 5 and 6? Cons: Some subplot cliff-hangers that leave you with questions for future installments to answer, but we now have to wait 2 years.

Apparently I am part of the minority that enjoys the visual storytelling of JK without the novel-backer. The whimsicality, visuals, story-telling and originality stands on its own. People and movie critics are entirely too critical nowadays.

This is a much denser, different and complex film. It moves fast (I guess too fast for some), paced like a thriller as Yates and Heyman said, it's frequently magical and awe inspiring. I was in from the very first shot (fantastic opening set piece by the way). Wasn't bothered or didn't see any of the flaws cited by some. It seems fairly obvious that quite a few elements in there will be lost on non fans, but really, why would you see this film if you're not a HP fan or at the very least, a fan of Fantastic Beasts & Where To Find Them?! It's gorgeously shot by Phillipe Rousselot, beautifully directed by David Yates as always, impeccably acted (Johnny Depp puts in one of his finest performances to date, Law is superb, some intriguing new additions, and the main cast is as excellent as ever), it's also shocking at times, intriguing, mysterious.

I don't care about the naysayers, JK is delivering what she's been wanting to tell for a while, and she does an excellent job at that. It's at times whimsical, magical, gorgeous (Mirror Of Erised scene, Hogwarts), powerful, mesmerizing (the third act).

I'm positively elated to see what JK has in store for the next three films and for us to get the full picture as this is after all the middle film, or middle part of a five part story. The ending is indeed jaw dropping and I'm sure that she has all the answers as she's proven before on HP and all will make sense in due time.

Expand
