Extraction is a frontal action film built in the old way where the main character is a total badass who kills everyone without any narrative involvement greater than the situation he's in at the time.

A great stunt work, yes, but a very bad job in the special effects.
Many of the scenes involving visual effects look really bad.

Chris Hemsworth at least departs from the role of the muscular funny guy and delivers a more sober performance but it's hardly a performance that separates him from what he has been doing so far.

There are people who will enjoy a film like this one and obviously it was made for that audience, for my part, I will hardly think about it again.

Pretty thin on the story-front, but the action is good to watch. Not really out there with movies you just have to see. It's a Netflix Original, an good enough for an evening at home.

'Extraction' is a fun popcorn action movie.... but man does it get brutal.

The best compliment I can give to this movie, besides the action scenes, was having the balls to harm or flat out kill children, which took me by surprise, but immediately got my attention.

The action scenes are the highlight of the movie, of course. I know this is a tired phrase when it comes to movies with a grand spectacle, but some of the action scenes in this movie really did feel like a video game. I think it has to do with the 11-minute-long take, camera work, and the intense detail to action set pieces that was executed wonderfully. The fight scenes and shoot outs have not been this sharp in a while.

Chris Hemsworth is a strong leading man, while also displaying some dramatic acting chops. The actor, who played the boy, was not as annoying as I thought he will be. Also, David Harbour is an absolute beast, especially next to Hemsworth.

However, it does have some problems. The main villain is so paper thin and forgettable that when the movie ends, you are not going to remember him.

I do not get why in these Hollywood action movies where foreign countries have this ugly colour palette. This movie is no different, even down to the same colour, which is muddy piss.

The movie has a plot, just a simple one. It is cliched as well, with the main character (Hemsworth) losing his son many years ago in a galaxy far far away. You've seen this trope before. Then again, the audience are not here for deep storytelling. Just give them action and they will be entertained. There is nothing wrong with that.

Overall rating: Solid entertainment, which is what we need right now, especially at this strange time of our lives.

I don't like in action movie when the hero kills an army of people alone, I prefer to make it more realistic, but anyway the film is cool and watchable.

If you like Chris Hemsworth & action-mystery movies you can give it a try.I would say Extraction is a average movie in every way.Golshifteh Farahani acted well. Finally as a Bangladeshi I will say Dhaka is wrongly presented in this movie.

The Persian actress didn’t do much acting so can’t say anything about her. Now the faults of the movie:
1. Weak plot and screenplay, 2. Plot had holes, 3. Ambiguous ending, which I guess is done on purpose, If there be a sequel, they need a better plot, replace the Goldshifteh with Another actress and keep us guessing what the ending will be.
I’m rooting for Chris, so gave it 5 stars.

What interested me in watching this film was seeing Chris Hemsworth in a movie outside of Marvel and the fact that this film was produced by the Russo brothers who did amazing Marvel movies. However, this movie was a Netflix exclusive movieWhat interested me in watching this film was seeing Chris Hemsworth in a movie outside of Marvel and the fact that this film was produced by the Russo brothers who did amazing Marvel movies. However, this movie was a Netflix exclusive movie which is rarely a hit. The basic premise of the movie is Tyler Rake (Chris Hemsworth) has got to extract the child of a drug lord in India who was kidnapped by the drug lord of Bangladesh for money. Simple.

Starting with the positive and probably the biggest reason why anyone wants to watch this movie, the action. This movie goes for a John Wick style of action with its incredible choreography and fast pace action. The action scenes are extremely violent and brutal which is borderline gratuitous but so entertaining. There is one particular action scene which is filmed to make it seem like an 11 minute one camera shot scene and it is really good even if the cuts are obvious. Praise should also be given to Chris Hemsworth's performance who gives a lot of likability and charisma for his character. Additionally, it is clear that Chris did a lot of the stunt for this movie and the director utilized this properly and effectively. The soundtrack and cinematography are also pretty good especially considering the scenery and high octane action.

This is where the praise ends. How was this a screenplay/story from the Russo brothers? It's very barebone and has a lot of forgettable dialogue. There is a plan from one of the drug lord that just feels really dumb and done so we can have a cool fight. Additionally, there are non-action moments in the movie where it just feels like time panning and slowing down the momentum. These moments would be fine if it felt like it was adding something but these moments are a bore with mediocre dialogue and boring characters that it is uninteresting. The movie is also very predictable and this is due to the fact that this movie adopts way too many cliches from older action movies but just giving a fresh coat of paint. These moments made me just wish they would just get to the next action set piece already. On that note of characters, they give some backstory for Tyler Rake (Chris Hemsworth) and the ex-military man who was hunting him to make him sympathetic but that's it. It would be nice to have been shown and not just told stuff about him because it just feels like a throwable line just to quickly give Tyler some characterization. What about his relationship with the mercenary girl or even David Harbour. Speaking of David Harbour even though he is a great actor, his character is incredibly forgettable. Every supporting character is forgettable to the point that I don't really know anything about them. The kid that Tyler saves likes playing the piano and is a son of a drug lord but apart from that, we know nothing about him. I would love to know more about his character by exploring his relationship a bit more with his father and ex-military dude or even how life is like as a son of a murderous drug lord. Furthermore, the relationship between Tyler and the kid just feels incredibly rushed and unearned. They just suddenly have huge trust in each other without any conflict which just feels unnatural. A lot of critics have bashed its aimless violence but it doesn't really bother me but I do feel that it doesn't feel necessary a lot of the times. However, the last act of this movie gets really tedious by giving hoards of mindless goons for Tyler to kill that just kind of makes you feel numb and bored of it.

If all you want from a movie is Chris Hemsworth kicking ass then this movie is really good. The director was definitely a stunt man as this movie has great stunts which shows the experience of a veteran stunts person. However, these action scenes don't really do something drastically new so don't expect anything revolutionary either. The action is all this movie got going for it. If you expect a good story or good characters similar to John Wick then this movie does not have that going for it sadly.

The one shot action set piece was admittedly kinda cool and Chris Hemsworth did do a good job with what he was given but everything else is so bland. The cinematography is bland, the action set pieces, minus the one take one, was bland and the characters were bland. The script was terrible and the story was so bloated and boring that I was scratching my head wondering why they made this movie 2 hours long. I would have been more lenient if the movie was at max an hour and a half long but 2 hours is pushing it. I would recommend passing on this unless you really want to watch it. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This movie wants to be John Wick meets Sicario, but it lacks a unique enough identity to make it work.

This is one of the most clichéd, generic and unremarkable action movies I've seen in a while.

Everything from its ugly, yellow-tinted cinematography to its horrible script, makes it almost indistinguishable from some direct-to-video action film that no one ever buys.

It isn't all negative though.
The action is, for the most part, pretty impressive.
There's one sequence that is one long take and it's by far the best moment in the movie (if you can overlook the painfully obvious hidden cuts).

Chris Hemsworth's performance is alright, but his character is not memorable or likeable.
David Harbour shows up towards the middle and he's really good, but he's gone far too quickly.
The kid that plays Hemsworth's rescue target is really not good. He's suposed to be scared for most of the movie, but he just looks confused.

It's a bore and it sucks, which is a shame, because there could be a good movie buried in here, somewhere.

It also kinda, sorta, maybe sets up a sequel?
Which is wierd.

Cool and sometimes really brutal action. The initial action sequences are amazing, unfortunately the rest of the film is just average.

I would not have needed unnecessary lengths that are used for characterization. The film didn't need any attempts to bring in any depth because the story is very straightforward. That makes the film okay in the end, but not anymore, despite some very good sequences.

Unfortunately, the effects of the explosion are not great either.

"Not great action film for sure, but undeniably ambitious directorial debut for stuntman Sam Hargrave."

Despite the meh narrative and mid script, many action scenes are insanely good. Unfortunately, there’re few ambitious fight scenes that were ruined by imperfect shaky cam (I mean, still too far away from Paul Greengrass style on Jason Bourne trilogy), but still, I see what Hargrave tried to challenge himself and crews. The result might not look so impressive but the respect for the ambitions Hargrave nailed in this debut film is sustained

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. High-impact action sequences are let down by a dud script in Sam Hargrave's kidnap thriller starring Chris Hemsworth. Chris Hemsworth (Thor) stars in this tightly choreographed action thriller about Tyler Rake, a ruthlessly efficient but emotionally constipated hired gun. Hemsworth is tasked with recovering the teenage son of Indian drug lord Ovi Mahajan Sr (Pankaj Tripathi). Ovi Jr (Rudhraksh Jaiswal) is being held hostage in Dhaka, Bangladesh, by a rival gang; in the film's most bravura set piece, Tyler "extracts" him in real time. First-time director Sam Hargrave draws on his formidable career as a stunt coordinator for several of the Marvel movies, shooting athletic combat sequences with a handheld camera at close range. The effect is immersive and high-impact. A shame, then, about the po-faced script, written by Joe Russo (co-director of Avengers: Endgame and Avengers: Infinity War) and adapted from his comic, Ciudad. The optics of a white mercenary raining down bullets on anonymous brown bodies aside, the film's solemn tone does the usually charismatic Hemsworth no favours. Expand
