The plots felt like its based on a decent scifi novel but then the director and editor ruined much of the build up, making the first half of the movie hard to sit through. The director could have made more use of the dreams during the escape part of the movie, e.g. linking the dreams to his proficiency with weapon, or finding an escape route. The pacing and editing were awful, the scenes felt like they were strung together with thin wires, poor costume design, predictable idiotic screaming children, subpar acting (michael pena's acting was particularly bad but that could just be that hes the only actor who i recognized). The movie would be a 3 without the twist. Expand

The recipe for a good sci-fi movie goes something like: 1 or 2 crazy twists(✓), the idea of love being a major secondary plot point(✓), the main character kicking butt and rising up to be a hero(✓), and most importantly the conflict resolves around a topic that is relatable to either the viewer directly or the society that the viewer lives (✓✓✓!)

This movie has all of that. Peña killed it as the lead... People critical of his acting have become too hooked on seeing confident and chiseled male leads... Peña was perfect because he perfectly portrayed someone who should be relatable to the target audience... A nerdy, shy, and flawed character.

Plot: 10/10
Effects: 9/10 (a few weak green screen shots)
Characters: 8/10 (a given for sci-fi... But those kids were really awful... Having them be a weight definitely served its purpose by making the family real... But its too much. More plot, less stupid kid please)
Acting: 8.5/10

Extinction is some solid sci-fi movie and while it has some strong resemblances with "The War of the Worlds", I liked this one definitely much more than the latest film adaptation (2005) of Wells' well-known book.
Despite all the downvoting, I think the action and the characters in "Extinction" were quite okay. Maybe there are so many negative reviews because there are no Hollywood heroes or epic scenes to be found here.
The movie is merely about an alien attack and the survival of a family. We experience the situation through the fate of an average family that really has no clue about what has befallen them and tries to act on the situation as best as they can.
The father seems to have seen it coming by weird nightmares and of course there is more to that. We find out late in the film and the actual revelation makes you think. It is good sci-fi movie with a social dilemma as motivation for the whole plot.
The movie itself will not bore you with long explanations. It builds up tension quite well, although it might not create epic feelings. But if you want, it leaves you with something to think about. And a story and some characters that are believable instead of being written for maximum views.

Yet thisBased on the previews, Extinction (2018) seems to tell the typical alien invasion story. UFO’s flicker in the night, ships descend on an awed crowd of citizens, mass murder and destruction ensues, chaos in the streets, the usual. Yet this Netflix sci-fi original offers philosophical commentary on the nature of the self as well as a twist that explores the political implications of artificial intelligence. In addition, it implicitly touches on highly relevant global issues like immigration, class antagonism, genocide and the tolls of war in general. The story takes place in a not too distant future where the main character, Peter (played by Michael Peña), is haunted by nightmares of an invasion in which he becomes convinced by the day that they are omens. At the expense of the pervasive premonitions, he neglects his family and increasingly exhibits poor performance at his job. Initially, one might get the sense that most of the movie would be about Peter trying to defend his sanity and repair damaged relationships, but writers Spenser Cohen and Brad Kane do a great job of allocating just the right about of time to get the audience to finally side with the protagonist before for the "I told so" moment happens and the action begins. This movie is packed with the right amount of suspense, a few big name actors and a brilliantly delivered existential curve ball. We follow the main character and his family’s short but precarious ten block journey from their bomb ridden apartment to a government safe facility as they evade violent encounters with their invaders. Peter’s revelation about the true nature of himself arises when one of his family members needs medical attention for a potentially fatal injury and his only hope is help from the alien who inflicted it. Michael Peña from “American Hustle” takes the lead role. Lizzy Caplan known for “Now You See Me 2” plays his wife and the Netflix's “Luke Cage” actor, Mike Colter, plays his boss. The film tells a great story in particular if you fancy the old Twilight Zone style rug ripped from under your expectations. It does a fantastic job at it. My only contentions with the movie are its hollow backstory and its lackluster ending. The audience is given glimpses of how things came to be through Peter’s tattered memories. As a result, there are a gaping set of holes in the chain of events that led to the origin of the alien invasion. These holes are only filled through brief references in a dialogue exchange between the main character and his antagonist. As for the film’s conclusion, like many Netflix originals, one kind of gets the feeling that either the producers exhausted their budget or the writers exhausted their imaginations. The main character gets individual resolve, but the movie's overall conflict does not. It is hard to tell if this is an attempt at leaving the possibility for a sequel or just weak writing. Altogether, however, the film offers a unique perspective within the alien invasion genre and one to be thoroughly enjoyed. Expand

The only thing to take away from this is that, in the event of an alien invasion ditch your incredibly annoying children immediately. Otherwise they will continually put your life in peril through their ridiculously stupid actions and if that doesn't kill you, their incessant screeching of "daddy i'm scared!" or "mommy don't go!" will have you reaching for the nearest alien rifle to blow your own brains out.
If you can make it to the end of the film there is a twist, but most likely you'll be on your knees praying for a real life extinction of humanity to put you out of your misery to really notice it.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This movie makes no sense what so ever, even the in-universe logic does not hold up. The first 30 minutes are boring and the characters are downright annoying. There is a “twist” that the protagonists are in fact robots / synthetics. But since they “have feelings” the audience is supposed to side with them rather then the “evil humans” who have come to take back the earth. Since the production quality is rather high it is at least easy on the eyes. Expand

I understand perfectly they need to have constantly new content and this I know perfectly because I have found that Netflix clients, many of their clients just want more and more and more and more, and Netflix is to blame because of that, because they educate them terribly with binge-watching and for that reason Netflix has evidently become the trash can of big studios that produced these films but they realized they would be a failure at the box office and therefore now they have someone to sell the rights and in addition avoiding the step of producing them on DVD and Blu-Ray and certainly any gain is better than a loss.

Extinction only reinforces what I think. This poor science fiction film produced by Universal with just 20 minutes into it shows that it would have been a huge failure at the box office and while I applaud they have a good Latino actor like Michael Peña who's not a gardener or a gang member in the story, in general terms the film is really bad. Lizzy Caplan is also involved but that's only anecdotal more than functional because nobody stands out a bit.

Extinction and the recent ''How it Ends'' go practically hand in hand. The quality is poor and the entertainment scarce and although it's another option for a catalog that unfortunately grows rapidly without quality, to me it's not a good option and I don't recommend it and I really hope Netflix will begin to take action on the matter because I think they can increase their catalog with higher quality films and have a solid offer for different viewers.
It's true that bad films sell, just watch the films they produce with Adam Sandlers, which are among their biggest hits, but I feel Netflix can do better. I really believe they can be better.

Obviously you gotta take Sci-fi with a grain of salt, but even this movie makes it impossible to have it be believable. Humanity scared of Earth? The US couldn't defeat the Vietcong, but we are supposed to believe that androids can defeat 7 billion humans? Yeah i don't think so

The premise, while entertaining, leaves too many questions, no answers, and no lasting satisfaction. While Michael Peña did amazing in Antman, the movie didn't create a relatable character for him to play. I will say however that the father was surprisingly competent and not unlikable, but he never did anything to stand out compared to other father-figure characters. Most of the characters were generic or down right annoying and unlikable, like the children. Good God the children. Never once did I care about the danger the children were in or their potential fate. If anything the movie would have been better if they had been killed off or never existed, they were that inconsequential to the overall narrative. They were useless, more akin to a huge burden, and a general detriment to the survival of their parents and those around them. They made so many stupid decisions that it just boggles the mind. The only person of real "attachment" character wise was the father and the mother (better described as husband and wife because the children didn't matter), but only because the story lacked any other meaningful characters. The visuals, sound design, and overall feel of the movie however are fantastic. There is some decent action, a real feeling of suspense and dread, and a (however fleeting) sense of satisfaction when we learn what is actually happening and why. Despite the hour and a half run time, they only manage to tell half of the story, so you'll finish this movie feeling empty and wanting. The "twist" opens the story up to too many questions that the movie just skips or ignores for bad pacing. If you're really big into alien invasion movies, then this might scratch an inch. If not, you're not missing out on anything fantastic. 5/10: Average Expand

This was a really good movie. I don't understand the low ratings. The movie is good sci fi just like midnight sky is - which is also underrated.

Not the worst movie I have seen but it goes in the pile. Lazy acting from otherwise likeable actors. No chemistry between characters. Plot was hurried but dragged on simultaneously. I get it you want me to feel for the characters, but the problem is the "Aliens" and their motives, it's honestly one of the stupidest plots, You had to ask yourselves, would something like this happen? Probably not.

However, what I did like about the movie is the VFX, I like those insane futuristic explosions. Also, the drop ships are pretty cool. As for the main character...look I like Michael Peña but to me, he is not a serious guy, he's a funny guy. There was that one scene where he did the thing with the gun, that was badass, but there's not much of that.

The length of the film also is pretty short, maybe they should have gone near the 2-hour mark to let the film sit a bit more.

Oh, I almost forgot there are a lot of logic breakers, I mean come on, "get up and carry her", just why? The writers really wrote themselves into a wall there. The acting is also a bit off but permissible.

It is 6/10, entertaining but it's not good, Expected a little bit more risks here, with better acting from the main characters. It did at points focus on other things that were not that important, but again it's somewhat understandable considering the "actual actual" plot.
