'Enola Holmes 2' means well with another female empowerment tale — this time based on actual events — but the formulaic execution, tons of exposition, and some mediocre acting make it your regular algorithmic Netflix film.

Horrific mess of a film from top to bottom. Is it even a film if the artistic vision is non-existent and absolutely everything is political messaging shoved down your throat with 0 subteltly.

Ritchie's two Holmes, those of 2009 and 2011 with Downey Jr. and Law, were kept afloat by the director's visual intuitions. In this for now new diptych by Bradbeer there is nothing comparable, you forget it while watching it because until proven otherwise it is still cinema and not social propaganda, therefore the trend of updating to the new criteria of civil equality cannot be enough changing gender and ethnicity of 100 year old characters (btw: there were no gays, lesbians, trans, queers. Unforgivable). Like for Dominik's recent crap, one of the basic principles of marketing is applied: why invent new characters when you can exploit, appropriately manipulated and revisited, the old brands with their acolytes, followers, loyalists?

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. A very good example of "diversity" done right: she has her own character and personality, and does not **** on anyone in order to be "better" than everyone else. She still needs help from Sherlock and her "boyfriend" but she also has major contributions on her own. Same goes for Watson: I don't care if he's black if it will have a place in the story. I could bet that he will because they did the same with Moriarty being a black woman. It was totally fine and made complete sense in the story. More movies should learn from this approach. Easily a 10. Expand

That's fine, I get it, playing within that game has nothing wrong with it if the quality is enough as in this case to justify its existence even if that doesn't mean in my case that I thoroughly enjoyed it.

In my opinion Enola Holmes 2 maintains the entertainment in a similar way to its predecessor, and I found it more competent in terms of script, although the pace does fall off in many moments, I think a more concise 100 minutes would have made this story a better film, but it's not a waste.

Ideal for the weekend. You won't think about it beyond that, except when they announce and release the more than inevitable third part.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. What a huge let down after the first one. I thoroughly enjoyed the first one. And honestly I enjoyed this until the Moriarty reveal. I mean sure, it's a twist because you don't expect who it is. But you have certain expectations of Moriarty. You expect some diabolical criminal mastermind. Man or woman, it doesn't matter. But Moriarty was always the quintessential megalomaniac. When you think Moriarty you think masterplan. So this enitre movie and this plot builds Moriarty and you finally get there. Only to find out that it was all just a grudge against the patriarchy. And by all means, that's fine as a motivation but not for Moriarty. Expand

You knew from the second that Enola Holmes ended that there would be a sequel coming. Our plucky heroine would be roaming the streets of London searching for more crimes to solve and people to find. In Enola Holmes 2, Enola is back to solve mysteries and trying to one-up her older and vastly more famous brother, Sherlock. As these sequels go, however, it can all become a lot more of the same. Here’s whether Enola is able to “out-Sherlock” Sherlock.

Enola Holmes 2 has an easy formula to follow. For everyone who saw the first film, you were already introduced to Enola, so you don’t have to get the who Holmes family backstory again. This movie can move right into what is happening with Enola since the last caper ended. Here, she’s about to close her fledgling private detective agency, when a young girl enlists Enola to find her missing sister. Eagerly, Enola takes on the case of these young women who work in a match factory, and she uncovers the disturbing truths along the way. Sherlock has a bit of a hand deducing in this mystery. Hijinks ensue.

Here’s the thing: if you liked Enola Holmes, there’s no reason you won’t like Enola Holmes 2. Millie Bobby Brown has the same charm and plucky energy as Enola as she did in the first film. Henry Cavill returns as Sherlock, and even though he gets to participate in the crime solving, the focus remains on Enola and her fumbling towards a resolution. The movie is light and interesting. The case has enough twists and turns to sustain the runtime, but it is fairly obvious where the mystery is going early on. I will say that there was a point where I was exhausted by all of the running around and chasing the red herrings. If the characters weren’t interesting and charming, I would have easily lost interest.

The main thing to know is that these Enola Holmes movies are really for your pre-teen/tween-age audience. They are fine for adults, but really, older people will get bored. Your 11-year-old niece will love this. She’ll swoon at the burgeoning romance between Enola and her love interest. Your nephew will swoon over Enola and other castmates and wish they were Sherlock. All while being confused by the most obvious twists, turns, and clues. It’s honestly a win-win situation.

Enola Holmes 2 is a cute teen movie overflowing with young women can do it power. This movie doesn’t feel like it has as much energy as the first but it’s still a quality movie. There is still charm throughout even though the mystery is a bit lacking. Grab a bowl of popcorn and the tween-age family member for a fun afternoon with the Holmes family.

About on par with the original, which I suppose is the minimum you want from a sequel.

I have similar thoughts about 'Enola Holmes 2' as I do for 'Enola Holmes'. Millie Bobby Brown is a strong lead, the support cast are good but the plot still isn't the most entertaining to watch unfold onscreen. I'm not sure it needed to be told over 2hrs, either.

Still, I got the required amount of entertainment from it. I appreciate the message and the story it tells, as well as them (seeming to, to me anyway) toning down the fourth-wall breaking - which is a tad overdone in the 2020 flick.

It seems likely that we'll be getting more of these, which I'm cool with - if the main cast remain, that is.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The movie can be enjoyable. If you don't care about plot holes, logic or wasted chances.

The actors do a decent job and even the Netflix typical diversity efforts work fairly okay in the multicultural London of the 1880s. The costumes are not totally wrong, just 30-40 years out of fashion for most parts for a 1880s setting and totally bad for the main character (looks more like 1950s dresses in parts).

But once you reach the end and the plot unfolds you notice what a wasted chance for a great story it actually is. I'm not sure why Netflix writers butchered the historic story a part of the plot is based on. The historical background story would have been an excellent empowerment, gender equality and strong women story to tie into a good and witty detective plot.
But what does Netflix do? The strong union leader woman of the history story gets turned into a romantic interest of the factory owners heir, working in some revue show and not being able to do anything without mens help. Unionizing and female solidarity of the workers is not mentioned at all, must the the US scare of trade unions. The main character Enola is similarily butchered. She is bratty, solves all problems like James T Kirk with her fists and is utterly clueless of social interactions. Quite unlike the good character in part 1.
In many ways the movie looks like it was pieced together from a bunch on TikTok scenes that looked cool, with no thought spent on logic and keeping the story tied together. Rapid cuts, lots of deus ex machina tricks to rescue the heroine from terrible situations. Very contrived puzzles.

Sadly, it appears that the lightness, enjoyment, and silliness have all increased in this sequel. It's now a Hollywood thing to do, and if it promotes diversity, I don't hate the gender or ethnicity swap as much as other people do. I understand that it's attempting to be its own thing, but why link it to the Sherlock Holmes moniker when the entire feel is moving very far away from anything Holmes-related?
