To me, the other underlying theme is that we are all special and have our own unique gifts, even if some of ours are less obvious than others. And finally it’s about family. You can have the best house in the world, your children can have the most incredible talents, but if it’s not underpinned by unconditional love, empathy and kindness then your family will crumble. The songs are incredible and very ‘Lin-Manuel Miranda’ so I’ve had the soundtrack on repeat. The protagonist is so loveable and you really feel for her. The thing the film is missing is that real ‘wow’ moment (think the TeFiti reveal in Moana or ‘show yourself’ in frozen 2) and I think they missed a trick when it comes to Mirabel and Abuela’s reconciliation - she could have said ‘Mirabel, casita didn’t give you a gift, because you were already born with yours’ BOOM! ❤️‍ Expand

I really loved the smaller scale story here. Disney animation movies are usually on a much larger scale and it was really refreshing to see the they focus on one central location instead of multiple. Most of the characters are pretty great as well. Mirabel, Luisa, Isabela, and Bruno were all well thought out and perfectly written. The other characters were fun but they were nowhere near as good as those 4 and I kinda wish some of them were on the same level. The animation and visuals are phenomenal. It’s the best looking animated film of the year. The movements look incredibly fluid and the environments look gorgeous. The music as well is great. A majority of the songs are really fun and catchy. The other songs I found to be somewhat forgettable though. The performances were all pretty good. I didn’t think there were any major standouts nor did I think anyone did a poor job. Everyone was good. The story itself and it’s message that you don’t need to have a special gift to be yourself works wonders for this film. I would definitely recommend checking this out when you can. It’s one of Disney’s best in my opinion. Expand

The negatives: the movie has no plot, things just happen and the main character does nothing to affect the outcome. All of the character development is done through the songs and it happens for no reason. The oldest sister has a personality change that's so jarring and out of nowhere that I lost interest in the story.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I'd find most Disney Musicals annoying and childish, but this one is hinestly the first good Disneycal (completely made-up mix of Disney and Musical) I've seen in a long time. The overuse of "We Don't Talk About Bruno" and the fanbase overall are the only things bothering me here. I only found it decent. The story and Animation was solid. I'm a Lin-Manuel Miranda person, too. But it's forgettable. I predicted the ending a mile away, being Mirabel finding out the her gift was HERSELF. Expand

Undoubtedly from the first minute you immerse yourself in the story, without mention the lovely animation showing us the continuous evolution of Walt Disney Animation Studios.
The most delightful of the film is there characters, probably they are the most original of the film too. Their gifts and insecurities are the most charming, giving us to understand that nobody is perfect.
It was going very well until the conflict arrives, is very intriguing and interesting, but it comes too late and the resolution has a lot of sense about "What keeps a home standing, is the union of the family" but it rush it a lot to end it and it makes loss all the impact.

Love conquers all, forgiveness is therapy, fear is pain; all that stuff can either feel pretty innocuous or downright well-meaning. With "Encanto," however, even though it all still feels pretty benign, I think the mechanics of its resolution (without getting too much into detail) ultimately undercuts the pain inflicted upon the protagonist. Felt like a little too easy of a wrap-up for some of the "wrong-doers" within. Ethical missteps aside, though, I still enjoyed the overall experience. It's well-structured piece, featuring a great protagonist and some unsurprisingly stellar animation. The songs mostly do the job — none more so than "We Don't Talk About Bruno," if I'm being real — and the voice cast is to be commended for sure. The definition of "good, not great" for me, but I still can't say I regret the watch. Expand

It's been a while since a really good Disney movie came out that was just wholesome. A movie about family and love. The movie just has the "feels" from beginning to end. A feel-good romp.

Lots of music, so many songs. It is clear that not all the cast are natural singers, but the songs are catchy and even with a flat delivery, still very entertaining. In fact they feel a bit more natural because of this, giving the tone a genuine quality to the performance.

There are so many colourful characters, and most are given their moment to shine. This movie is one of the few times where I would say, it could have used a few extra scenes as there is just so much more they could have done. I really would have loved to spend more time with each if the family members.

I can easily see this continuing into a show someday, and if it follows the tone and spirit of the movie, it'll be a classic.

Overall:
Encanto is a fun family film that is perfect for the holidays. It isn't the most Epic Disney movie, but I do think it embraces the Disney wholesome recipe to the letter.

Encanto is to Colombia what Coco was to Mexico in its clear Disney vision.
It's just as colorful and fun, but with more deficiencies than Coco, especially the musical aspect.

Have we really reached a point where Lin-Manuel Miranda is the only person who can be making musicals and music in Hollywood?
Unimpressive songs is something that constantly plagues this film and it's a shame because it lent itself to more outstanding musical numbers.

However, the film has other strengths, especially its humor and warmth, and the great animation.
It may not turn out to be one of the best films in the field, but for this time of the year, a Disney animation for the family never goes wrong.

The music is overall good, but only half of the songs are memorable in my opinion. The animation is gorgeous, with vibrant colors and realistic facial expressions. In fact, it's a modern take on the ‘princess story’ that we all know well. However, if we look at the other Disney films of recent years, Encanto falls short. The music and numbers doesn't linger and, partly due to the modern pop approach, it doesn't quite match the style of the movie. Totally the opposite of, for example, Coco. Nevertheless, a very nice film that will make young and old laugh and cry! Expand

It kinda like, puts you in a good headspace. The colors and animation are gorgeous, and I like that it's able to tell a complete story in a small and compact setting; very unique. Also, the protagonist is very likable and most of the characters in general have interesting personalities and are fun to watch on screen. There is diversity in the film, which is obviously a good thing in and of itself, but with many movies nowadays they make everything ABOUT race and pushing agendas. This is not that. Although I definitely had my issues. There are plot points that feel like they're leading up to something, and then just kind of... don't, which is weird. Also, some individual elements in there were just cringe. Like I get that it wants to appeal to the culture, but still. There was one musical number in particular which was like a random, out-of-place, Disney channel-inspired pop song and I did not like it; other than that though I will say that the music in this movie is pretty dang good. There were some bangers, actually. It's not incredible, but if you don't go in with the mindset that you're gonna hate it, and just sit down and take it in, it's an enjoyable movie. For anyone to watch honestly. It looks great, has good characters, heart, humor. I recommend. Expand

Furthermore the songs are quite good, although not quite memorable dare I say, and its premise at its core is interesting. Yet the movie still fails to captivate compeletely.

I wanted to love this movie, I am from Colombia and the idea of an original Disney movie inspired on my country is quite exhilarating, the moment I heard the theme of the movie from Carlos Vives filled me pride and happiness and seeing some of the references like the food they ate made me giggle. Furthermore the animals, the enviroment, the salsa-like music all sell the Colombian countryside quite well. In terms of represantion I couldn't be happier.

Still, quite unfortunately, the story doesnt quite flourish in the same way. While it has a great premise, I thought that the constant singing diminished the experience. Some of the more key moments, like finding out the emotional weight that a certain character feels in regards to her position in the family is told through singing and rampant visuals and most of the more sentimental parts are managed this way. In this regard I thought the movie never had a moment to truly breath and explore its characters.

Ultimately this led to a very unsatisfying conclusion where it seemed like the movie wanted you to be emotionally compromised, but the investment wasnt there. I honestly felt like the solution to everything came out of nowhere. A better balance between music and storytelling could have served this one way better.

Nontheless, the message to it all is still there, and its still a valid lesson for anyone to understand, specially the kids. Plus, the visuals, the music and some of its funnier moments still make for an entertaining watch.

Amazing Film Filled With Great Emotions And Lessons That Bring Big Surprises
Encanto is an amazing film full of teachings that brings big surprises and great emotions to the public. You´ll be thrilled with the many beauties and magic in this film.

The film tells the story of Mirabel Madrigal (Stephanie Beatriz), a girl who is part of the Madrigal family, a family where everyone has super-magic powers. But, is Mirabel of the same alignment as they are? An unexpected event that puts the family in danger, can change everything.

The storyline is well written. I really love the characters. They are funny and nice and the kind of people that everyone likes. My favorite parts are when Antonio Madrigal talks to the animals. I love animals and have always wanted to understand them. Watching this film gave me a greater desire to communicate with animals. This is magical! I also like the part when Mirabel is going to save the family and she says something funny. The special effects are terrific. Everything is super colorful. The background music is extraordinary; the music I like most is the adventure song when Mirabel takes off on her adventure. I love the adventure genre and this music accentuates it. As for costumes, I particularly love the costumes that show their tradition, yet at the same time, are contemporary outfits. They are so beautiful!

The message of the film is that we need to believe in ourselves, Never give up, because in the end you'll find a light.

I give Encanto 5 out of 5 stars and recommend it for ages 10 to 18, plus adults. Encanto releases in theaters and on Disney+ November 25, 2021.

I've decided to end my movie watching experience of 2021 with Encanto. I tend to be a sucker for Disney animated movies and this one was no exception. The premise is "The Madrigals are an extraordinary family who lives hidden in the mountainsI've decided to end my movie watching experience of 2021 with Encanto. I tend to be a sucker for Disney animated movies and this one was no exception. The premise is "The Madrigals are an extraordinary family who lives hidden in the mountains of Colombia in a charming place called the Encanto. The magic of the Encanto has blessed every child in the family with a unique gift -- every child except Mirabel. However, she soon may be the Madrigals last hope when she discovers that the magic surrounding the Encanto is now in danger". So did the movie enchant me or did the magic fade out?

Firstly, I love the setting and world of Encanto. This is the first time Disney has explored Columbian culture and I think they did a great job in representing it. The movie also doesn't shy away from some dark stuff which genuinely surprised me. The world is also wonderful, despite just being in one house most of the time. Although, to be fair it is a magical house which allows it to be more visually interesting. Nevertheless, there was never a moment where it felt dull even though it was just set in one place. In terms of the 3D animation, it is still absolutely gorgeous to look at. Every shot feels so spectacular and vibrant which helps make the world feel alive. There is a character that can create flowers and her abilities allow for some dazzling scenery and shots.

Encanto is a Disney musical with songs done by legendary Lin-Manuel Miranda. I can safely say that the songs are good and catchy. The songs here do feel different from that of Frozen (2013) which felt more musical theatre. Here the songs feel more pop sounding but it still works very well. There is a song near the end, "Two Oruguitas", that is more emotional sounding which I like. I also give praise for them including songs that are sung in Spanish which strikes home the setting of Encanto. Encanto does a lot different with the story as well. For starters, this movie doesn't have the chosen one, warrior heroine as they have done with previous animated movies. Our main character Mirabel (Stephanie Beatriz) doesn't have a gift, has a little awkward personality and is jealous of her gifted family members. She never performs an amazing heroic feat like previous heroes and heroines in Disney movies. She just loves her family and wants to do her best to help them. Likewise, the story subverts expectations you would have about other characters which I think will be an important lesson for kids. On that note, there are a lot of lessons taught in this film and I think they are very relevant messages. In terms of plot, it is more of a mystery and family drama type of story rather than a beat the bad person story. This made Encanto very refreshing to watch.

However, the movie does go through a lot of the generic structure you would see from these Disney animated movies. It gets to the point that you can predict a lot of the mystery before it is even revealed. To be fair it is a family movie so it shouldn't matter but it is something to note. The ending is also something I'm slightly mixed on. I think it dampens the overall message a little bit. Additionally, some supporting characters, unfortunately, do not get enough of a focus which leads to them either getting rushed resolution at the end or none at all. Lastly, while I do like the music in the movie, I don't find them as easy to sing along to. The movie doesn't have a song like "Let it Go" from Frozen or "How Far I'll Go" from Moana. There are good songs but I don't see kids singing the songs all day long. Overall, Encanto feels like an actual attempt at something new for Disney musicals. I find the movie succeeds in it as well. It was a completely enjoyable and pleasant experience that enchanted me. It's charming and full of heart while delivering a worthy message to all. A fantastic, magical tale that is definitely worth watching.

All the cultural tokens are there (Colombian food, music, etc.), but somehow it didn't feel much like Colombia. It just felt like a bland story with a yellow, blue and red paint coating on it. I bet there weren't that many Colombians in the production team. Also, I get that they are aiming for gender equality, but Disney really needs to stop making all male adult characters stupid. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Encanto was amazing. The animation was outstanding; just one of the most gorgeous, stunning animated films I've ever seen. The music was exceptional, I especially loved the lyricism in the songs; my favorite songs were Surface Pressure, What Else Can I Do?, and We Don't Talk About Bruno. The writing was phenomenal; I loved how emotionally charged the movie was and the themes of the movie about family, trauma (specifically transgenerational trauma), embracing who you are, and not forgetting what's truly important in life were so well done and explored and also I love how they used symbolism, using Abuela's unexplored trauma to symbolize the unseen darkness threatening the family which in turn shows us how we can't keep trauma bottled up forever casue if we don't work threw our trauma it can't have a negative impact on more then just ourselves but on the ones we care for and love. The performances were superb especially from Stephanie Beatriz, María Cecilia Botero, Jessica Darrow, John Leguizamo, Diane Guerrero, Adassa, Carolina Gaitán, Rhenzy Feliz, and Mauro Castillo. This was an A+ movie, one of the best movies I've ever seen. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. For me, Encanto was a mixed bag. It was aesthetically beautiful, especially in regards to color. I liked the songs (although I had to play several of the songs with subtitles so I could understand the lyrics). However, overall, I cannot say I enjoyed Encanto. I did not like the Abuela character. She treats Mirabel like a second rate family member because Mirabel does not have a special gift. Mirabel is not featured in the family picture, and she is encouraged to stay out of the way of the preparations for the party. It's not as if anyone in the family "earned" their gifts. The gifts were just bestowed. Bruno is also ostracized because he saw a bad vision for the family. There are some other instances in which the characters with gifts hold themselves higher than the characters without. I know it's supposed to be a playful animated film, so it may not be appropriate to over-analyze it. However, I could not help my resentment of some of the characters, and that kept me from making an emotional connection to the film. Expand

Was kinda surprised whenever the ratings are so low that my nephew wanted to go and see it. I took him and his friend and both of them ended up crying from the end of the movie. It was a pretty real but exaggerated version of families. Luisa being the athletic, top performing sister who feels she has to take on everything for the other siblings. Isabella feeling she has to live the most perfect life possible to live up to her families expectations for her. Then you have mirabelle who is an outcast because she has no gift and has no expectations set for her. The pacing is weird in some parts like Isabellas quick turn around, but honestly I would watch this over many other movies I've had to watch with these kids. Expand

There were not any real villains in it which made it stand out more from your standard Disney movies. The jokes and most of the songs in my opinion weren't their strongest point. The strongest point in this movie for me was the story, ending and the moral of everything this movie made. Since families are gathering during the holiday, it makes sense that a family-oriented film would be released in order to bring everyone together. This year Encanto gets that honor, and bonus, it's about the family. Here's how it went.

Disney's Encanto tells the story of the Madrigal family, which was blessed with a miracle that gave each descendant a special ability, except Mirabel. Mirabel doesn't feel special because she lacks a power like the others. She struggles to find her place in this world where magic is celebrated above all else. When the family's magic is threatened, Mirabel attempts to protect their miracle and home. You know the story - music and humor and heartwarming hijinks ensue.

Many Disney movies can lean too childish for adults to appreciate or too grown-up for children to really get. Encanto balances it perfectly so that both the little ones and the adults can enjoy the film. The plot is simple enough to follow even though there are a lot of characters. The firs song of the movie acknowledges that there are a lot of people to keep track of. Unfortunately, some of those characters get short shrift, but that's not detrimental to the overall success of the movie. The ultimately message of the film of self-acceptance and the importance of family is presented well and resonates long after the movie ends. Both children and the adults can grasp these themes while enjoying the visual spectacle of the film.

Lin-Manuel Miranda is responsible for the original songs in Encanto. If we didn't know already, Miranda is a talented songwriter. He has created some very catchy tunes that move the story along. There are some songs that are fun and funny and some that hit you square in the heart. The most dynamic song and my personal favorite is "We Don't Talk About Bruno." Try to sit still during that one - I dare you! This movie really uses the music to great effect in telling the story, bringing the audience into the Colombian environment of the film, and sending you home dancing. My one quibble with the songs is that they can get wordy and you may unfortunately miss some of the clever lyrics.

Lastly, I'll just note that the animation is terrific. Each of these characters have big expressive eyes. The filmmakers were able to focus on the diversity of their looks and their placement within the family. Their magical abilities are given great moments to shine. There are dazzling colors throughout. It all comes together to add to the overall charm of this story and characters.

Clearly, I really loved Encanto. The story is simple enough. The runtime is perfect. The animation is eye-catching. The music is awesome. It hits emotional highs and sends you out of the theater dancing. Definitely, grab a big box of popcorn and head to the theater for this one.

The movie has, as usual with Lin-Manuel Miranda, some of the most amazing music made for a Disney movie I have heard since I don't know when. The animation in this movie is also fantastic, embracing the beauty of the Coco movie's animation and taking it a step further, with even more beautiful colors, fun features, and attention to detail.

The story of this movie is incredibly well thought out and really encapsulates you and makes you never want to stop watching. Though the story is kind of complex and can be hard to understand, if not fully concentrated as it moves pretty quickly. Some of the smaller children might not get the message or whole story of the movie, because of this simple reason, though I wouldn't consider that a problem as the movie never feels boring.

This movie has a lot going for it and even if it might have some small flaws, feeling a little lacking of good character development at times, this doesn't really matter as the movie still feels comprehensive and finished. This in my opinion is easily one of Disney's best movies of all time. With incredible music, animation, and storylines this movie never really gets old and easily is deserving of a 10.

Also I like the singing and whole soundtrack. By the way this comes from someone who mostly dislike the Disney songs but here they won me over instantly. The story is about the Madrigal family who live in a secluded or hidden village in the mountains of Colombia build by former refugees. After a tragic event in the past their grandmother received a gift and every member of the family since then is blessed as young child with a magical ability. Be it superhuman hearing, (minor) weather control, superhuman strength, visions, shape-shifting or the ability to grow plants / flowers instantly. They use this to the benefit of all people in their town. Sadly Mirabel was the only one who did not get anything as it failed on her. Years later there is a strange occurrence that shows some hidden things and is a danger happens. I am vague here to avoid spoilers. The story is amazing and won me over from start to finish. It has good twist and the conclusion including lesson is truly great. I enjoyed the characters and say the whole Madrigal family is awesome and believable. I cant go more into details as it would be also too much spoilers but say everyone with a family or many relatives can understand this easily. Mirabel voiced by Stephanie Beatriz is a protagonist anyone can identify. Her emotions, struggles and journey are textbook examples how to create a great immersive character. Then there is the rest of the family with Alma (Maria Cecillia Botero), Luisa (Jessica Darrow), Bruno (John Leguziamo) and all the others I should name but are to lazy to type in. All characters work well and the voice actors are truly amazing. They sell the big family setting without any doubts. Like I said the songs are fantastic and won me a (mostly) Disney song hater over. I say it is one of the best soundtracks in an animated movie. The animations are colorful and have such a beautiful style. There is nothing to criticize for me. I will praise the effort of the whole team involved. Overall this is an easy recommendation not only for Disney fans or lovers of animated movies. I think it will become a timeless classic and praised by fans and critics alike. Expand

The music rarely communicated any sort of emotional value, rather trying to emulate pop, making the soundtrack feel more like its meant to be played outside of the movie on something like Spotify or Apple Music.

Story-wise, it never feels like the movie is really building to much, characters kinda just putz around until stuff happens to them, they'll react, then continue onto the next thing. Very little feels properly developed.

The animation was mostly very communicative and appealing, though sometimes the over-the-top expressions of the protagonist came off as a little too quirky.

Honestly the songs weren't very good. They were all over the place. The story was pretty lame overall. I guess I'm just not the target audience but even 10 year old's deserve better movies.

It does take listening to the songs a few times to stick but once they do they are addictive. Story is pretty standard for a disney/kids movie.

The story was predictable, the characters weren't fleshed out and were really two-dimensional and for all the songs they either stopped time or went to a pocket dimension for some weird reason. The only reason I'm even giving it a 4 is that the animation is next-level good. Other than that it's just your typical run-of-the-mill Disney movie. Expand

Disney in general seems to be trying to reinvent the wheel. They are pushing this culture thing where they try to find small pockets and then use it for inspiration. Setting is important but what’s more important for you to write a good story. Maybe it had a message or maybe it doesn’t but it should draw you in. Look at past success. Little mermaid. Every little girl wants to be a mermaid and then ultimately when they get older to find Prince Charming. It has elements of rebellion from your parents and going off on your own. It’s a tale of growth for a young girl. It’s a pretty fantasy. The first frozen. Super powers of ice. Also a princess to be a queen. Loss. family. Love of family is also powerful not just Prince Charming. I just didn’t feel as intrigued with this one. I loved coco but this one just didn’t pull me in the same way. Delving into other cultures in great but it should be second to your story telling. Just my two cents. Hopefully Disney comes out with something else soon and it’s better than the last couple. Expand

Disney attempts to hit similar strides to Pixar’s Coco, but falls flat on its face in comparison. Coco has a much more immersive world full of creativity and interesting characters, but the world of Encanto and its characters are both bland and forgettable. There’s some good animation, but there’s no denying that some of these designs feel recycled and flanderized. The story is uninteresting and predictable, there’s barely any time dedicated to building upon the Columbian setting, and the dialogue feels choppy and lacks the effort of other Disney films.
