"Edge of Tomorrow" is a fast-paced blockbuster action thriller that delivers comedy, suspense, and of course, some action. Definitely one of the biggest surprises of 2014.

And Tom Cruise is always welcome.

Caught throughout the whole film! The time loops are exciting and sometime funny, there is chemistry between the protagonists at their unique and personal way, you can truly feel what they are thinking in each scene. Should be viewed more than once.

Needless to say I wasn't excited to see this, but I am so glad I did. Excellent action, plenty of humor, and a great story and characters take this one over the top. It proves that sci-fi isn't dead.

Watching the same day play out over and over again does lead to some repeated scenes, some of which aren't accompanied by the films sense of humorous deja vu jokes, but overall this is one of the best films of the year. I had an absolute blast watching it and I highly recommend it. My total score is an 8.5/10.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. well, i think Tom is extremely good in this, as indeed is Ms Emily, both of them superlative actors who, naturally, work very well together, being as i they're both superlative actors, and as another consequence of them both being, what was it again? "superlative actors!" that's it, their relationship, which, though fraught with all the requisite anxiety and stress one would naturally associate with your average impending Alien Apocalypse, their relationship is mutually accommodating from the get-go on the beach, their chemistry only improves as they spend more and more time together, which is just as well as it seems they might well have repeated the same day, the only day they ever spend together, many hundreds of times, a strain on people who know each other backwards let alone a man who has not only to repeat himself countless times, BUT who's charged with the unenviable, not to mention tedious, task of each day having to deal with everyone for their first time, Tom being the ONLY person on Earth blessed (or is it cursed?) with prescience, and it's a testament of the strong commitment of these two (superlative) actors to their characters, who not only maintain a wholly believable through line but one that in the face of impossibly cruel odds can find a warmth, even a tenderness, for each other. not to mention a vital and perfectly pitched sense of humour. and everyone is on top form. just a pity the black girl has to suffer the indignation of Hollywood once again playing the ill-suited, sanctimonious and plain WRONG role of Saviour of the Worlds Sensibilities, making the poor wretch have to say (and possibly never ever live down) the heinously censored "why don't you two get yourselves a nice hot cup of Shut The Hell Up", and not just twice either! and no, it's nothing like Groundhog Day or Source Code, and Private Major Cage is NOT a coward as has been mooted on these and other less worthy pages, rather he's a very complicated character having to deal with the kind of mind-snapping challenges you or i wouldn't face in a thousand lifetimes, if we were lucky. oh, and there's nothing 'tedious' about the repetitive repetition either, something concerning one or two of you out there. it's a well paced, quality crafted and consummately executed movie. my only irk, and it was rather singular, didn't live for long, was that one single Irishman seemed to be running Earth's defences all by himself. i suppose come the sequel Tom could always send HIM to face his inevitable death, no? course, it would need a snappy, having-it, insider-type title though... something like... AtEdge of Tomorrow is one of the most underrated Sci-Fi's in recent years and sadly it seems to have gone unnoticed by the majority. It remarkably manages to rip off so many films and video games whilst feeling refreshingly original also. At times it can feel like a game of spot the original source. In particular the time lapse elements which are very similar to Groundhog Day. If you over think the pattern and repetition of events, you can argue that there are flaws, as with any film of this kind. But it's smartly edited and it moves at such a rampant pace that you don't have time to dissect or question the flaws. Tom Cruise & Emily Blunt carry the film well and it's arguably Tom Cruise's best Sci-Fi to date. Visually this is a spectacular experience and the set pieces are some of the craziest and most exciting I've ever seen, in particular the battles on the beaches which are absolutely incredible. At first glance this just looks like another run of the mill action film with robots. Unlike the Transformers films for example, Edge of Tomorrow gets the human elements spot on and it doesn't rely solely on set pieces. But the set pieces happen to be spectacular too. So it's win-win and definitely worthy of much more recognition. Expand

"Edge of Tomorrow" 10 Scale Rating: 8.5 (Amazing) ...

The Good: Fantastic idea that was well written and thought out. I typically dislike Tom Cruise these days, but he did a great job here. His transformation from clueless desk jockey to hardened war veteran was seamless and Cruise showed more depth than he usually does. Blunt was even better as a grizzled and cold war hero. The film is extremely creative and is a perfect blend of sci-fi, war, and drama movies. The alien threat was well designed and different from the generic villains that we've grown accustomed to in this sort of film.

The Bad: I know it is key to the plot, but I did get sick of seeing the exact same battle over and over again. While they eventually show you a truncated version, you still see the entire thing far too many times. Despite suffering several quick and random deaths, the lead character was able to survive some pretty fantastic things late in the film. The film has what amounts to two endings: the way they want you to think it ends, and the way it really ends ... while it didn't take away TOO much, I preferred the former.

However, like I mentioned before but the movie does get slow at points. It never stops in it's tracks thankfully, but I wish the mid-section of the movie was a tiny bit more interesting. Also, the other major thing that bothered me was the ending. Is not terrible by any means, but is not satisfying either.

Visually, the movie is well crafted. The special effects deliver but are not so heavy that they feel overwhelming. It's clear this movie relied a lot on actual sets and production design. The VFX are a nice supplements, specially for the alien creatures.

Edge of Tomorrow is pretty much Groundhog Day but with aliens and explosions, It's not a bad thing ether. Even after seeing the same D-Day like action scene over and over they are able to keep it fresh enough to hold your interest. They also add a little amount of humor to break up all the "Live/Die/Repeat" witch is nice. Obliviously near the end of the movie it falls into that generic Hollywood movie story and you can pretty much predict the ending half way through the movie. But all together the action is great, so is the CGI and It will make you laugh a few times.
This movie is great for a late night or weekend action flick.

Edge of Tomorrow is an surprisingly great film, with awesome action sequences and superb science fiction!

The historical opening scene is incredible, and combined with the awesome CGI and special effects, it totally took me of guard. The film is so underrated, and I truly love this film. This is one of the best sci-fi films of 2014! There's also some ironic scenes that I truly enjoyed to watch. There are some similarities between this and other films, which doesn't bother me, but it might could have been a bit more innovative at some places. Other negative aspects of Edge of Tomorrow is that the ending could have been better, but it's still one of the best sci-fi films of the year.

One groovy and awesome film!

It's movies like this these days that really help you still believe in things. I for one have grown weary of movies about aliens just way overdone in my opinion, unless you can show me something different. Original is a bad word to use because few things are but this movie got close. It had a very generic oh no aliens are going to take over the world, what do we do approach. When you do that you better have a dang good alien plot and a dang good alien to fight against. Edge of Tomorrow had both. I really liked these aliens and that their biology was different from anything from Earth. And how they moved is freaky and would scare anyone up against them. And best of all, they are not impossible to kill! Tom Cruise nailed it...not sure how, he's been such a consistent action-hero in recent years it's hard to see him at first as a weakling or pansy, but he actually is convincing. And then his gradual step into the hero spotlight doesn't seem at all cliche' its just a matter of how do you beat someone who knows everything you are about to do? I thought the replay of the same day would start getting annoying but they were careful about that too. It was just well done. Blunt and Cruise complimented each other perfectly and it gets to a point where you're like FALL IN LOVE ALREADY. So a good watch for sure. Action fix, sprinkled of humor here and there and a well structured plot...ahhh (relieved sigh) thank you. Expand

Unexpectedly riveting, funny, and smart. The story isn't quite original, but it mashes many ideas from other movies well together (Groundhog Day, Pacific Rim).

The acting is pretty good, for an action flick as well as generally speaking. It was very refreshing to see Tom Cruise getting scared and ass-kicked, instead of being that unstoppable force he always plays in this genre. Emily Blunt was just as good as Cruise; I might even say that she was the true star of the film.

The action scenes are entertaining, the special effects are great, and above all, the editing. They cleverly took the concept of repeated days, and crafted some very gripping and funny moments of it.

I now regret not seeing this when it was in theater. Having watched it now, I think I like it more than X-Men: Days of Future Past and Dawn of the Planet of the Apes (as far summer movies are concerned). I believe I like this just as much as I enjoyed Guardians of the Galaxy.

The premise made me want to watch it off the bat, and I'm very glad I did.
To put it extremely simplistically, think Groundhog's Day with an alien invasion, Tom Cruise and Emily Blunt, along with Bay level explosions and a good sense of humour.
Of course it's much more than that. Brilliantly edited, great visuals and a fast paced plot, with Tom Cruise once again reminding us that whatever you think about him, the man belongs on screen.
Will definitely be watching this one again.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Great effects, good background music, acceptable timeline......for these, I can give 8 pts. For the 3 deducted pts, I want to say, no matter who decided that----F**K YOU, RITA IS NOT SUCH WEAK!!!!! She is a VERY STRONG girl (not woman). She lost the power doesn't because she lost her blood, instead, she attained VICTORY in her own fight and this is why she got out of HER repeat. Not only weakening my favorite female in the original fiction, but also weakening the aliens. To those who read the original fiction, this movie is simply a DISASTER. These people got a fantastic plot from the author, but they just ruin it. They want the story, but show no respect to the original characters. I don't know how to describe my feelings. The only reason that I didn't walked out of the cinema in the middle is because...it has nice effects. It is definitely not my type, but for those who didn't read the the original one, it is ok. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This one seemed to have slipped by most peoples movie radar this summer. I never would have foreseen a Groundhog Day meets Aliens mash up to be something worth watching but I walked out of this one having had thoroughly good time. The comedic possibilities of the Groundhog Day scenario were taken full advantage of and then the movie manages a serious shift that I found very touching.

I thought the best scene in the movie comes later in when Tom Cruise and Emily Blunt find themselves alone in a farm house planning for their next move against the aliens. The previous scenes don't give any indication that they have been to this farm before (since Tom relives the same day). The scene is skillfully unfolded to reveal that both characters had been there countless times and each time Emily's characters death, try as Tom's character might, could not be stopped. You see in that moment how deeply Tom's character had fallen in love and how unstoppable a force death is.

Engaging

It's like watching your best friend play your favorite video game without giving you a turn.

Solid effects and a decent, if not overly clever, story make it an engaging film but not exceptional.

Tom Cruise plays a different character than we've seen in his last few movies. Instead of a super spy that dodges bullets, here he is Bill Cage a cowardly military propagandist who gets sent to the front lines to battle an alien invasion. During the first few minutes of battle he is killed but wakes up again to the day before battle and the process repeats and he gets better and smarter each time. Edge of Tomorrow is the type of smart and sleek sci-fi action that we have not seen the like of since James Cameron's Aliens. And speaking of aliens, the "Mimics" in this movie look great and come off looking very original. The acting is very good not only from Tom but also from Emily Blunt who plays Rita Vrataski, a hardened soldier who has also went through the time loop. The action is well done, the effects are very good and a lot of them are practical which is a huge plus in my book. I highly recommend seeing this in the theaters. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Tom Cruise puts in a strong performance in this smart action thriller. The beach attack scene is very reminiscent of Saving Private Ryan. Very chaotic and gory at times, and the mimic aliens are genuinely original and scary. Whenever they're on screen you feel a palpable sense of threat. The only downside is the ending, which I felt was a bit lame. If the mimics are so intelligent and deadly and are able to control time then how come their most important position was so easily infiltrated? Overall still a great film. Expand

The first thing that sparked my interest was to see the film opening in the heat of summer, and NOT being a sequel of some sorts and reboot.
Secondly, Tom Cruise and the odd ball pairing of Emily Blunt. And Thirdly, Director Doug Liman. After months of speculation, leading up to the film's initial release, I was worrisome. How can an original Sci-Fi open up in the midst of the summer movie going season and stand its own?. Granted, two years ago we had "Prometheus" but that was more a prequel than "original". Anyhow, "Edge Of Tomorrow" adversely sets itself apart from other big budget spectacles this year. You would never think that the whole "Groundhog Day" meets "Independence Day" angle would ever work. But it does.

Tom Cruise is kind of in his typical wheelhouse, not playing the big budget action hero he is stereotyped as. Which also gives the movie some added credibility. Aside from him, Emily Blunt evenly matches her co-star, and actually is impressive to watch on screen together. The story is set in the backdrop, where humans have been at war for five years against an alien menace, called Mimics. The NATO militaries have created an ultimatum to fight the ongoing invasion, there called Jackets. Which are an exoskeleton body armor suit which are equipped to the bone with heavy aliterlary. Cruise plays Major William Cage. a fidgety, egotistical and plan marketing expert whose sole job is to ensure the public enlist in the on going fight.

Then there is Rita Vratarski (Blunt) more like a channeling "Rosie The Riveter" of this generation. Rita and Cage unlikely cross paths in the midst of battle, where Cage has gained accessed to a supernatural ability or "time loop", whereas every time he is killed, the day prior starts over or "resets". The two must form a bond, and live to fight each day and harvest the power of the Mimics in order to ensure humanity's survival.

Some, actually most, will likely argue that the action scenes, creature design and so forth are the films greatest strengths. I attest to those attributes, but I genuinely feel the film's greatest strengths lies within the screenplay, and the performance of Tom Cruise. In the beginning were susceptible, thinking Cruise is likely playing his normal "Top Gun" or "Mission Impossible" persona, however, this is never the case. The growth of Cruise's character, William Cage is worth the price of admission alone. I love how the audience goes from knowing a skirmish guy that has to ask constantly "Where is the safety?" to the end, where he is busting loads of bullets into alien sc*m, the only way he sees fit. It's honestly quite impressive.

Emily Blunt is fun also, while not being able to take her seriously maybe a tad hard, but her persona was perfect, and she's not your normal leading lady. Instead, she evenly pits herself against the big guns (no pun intended) and swings with full blast. Another greater strength to this film, is that it balances it's comic relief with stylized sci-fi sequences that feels like a breath of fresh air. From the over intoxication of deaths on screen, nobody could ever tell you they don't enjoy a laugh or two.

Of course, with the strengths comes the weaknesses. Where most film's problems is the pacing, "Edge Of Tomorrow" kind of suffers from lack thereof. Essentially, every five minutes the film is basically set in a spiral motion, and then bam, the whole relive every day plot sinks in, and becomes tasteless after a while. This never distracted from my overall enjoyment. I can say, however, I was a little fatigue with where things ended up. Including a satisfying conclusion, that was a tad rushed, and won't leave you feeling cheated. (Even though the ending, for lack of some better words, COULD have been better).

At the end of the day, weather your sci-fi geek, Tom Cruise extraordinaire, or any of the above. Doug Liman's "Edge Of Tomorrow" has a little something from everyone. And if you have the option .. it looks and sound's stunning in IMAX 3D

B+

The movie was exciting to watch the entire time and kept you interested. Comedy was included in the movie in a very subtle and cohesive way which didn't take away from the film's serious tone overall. I cannot find a fault with the film and that is what I'm usually looking for. Tom Cruise gives a very good action performance which isn't unusual at all given his long list of action roles which he executes great. Personal feelings put aside about the guy, he is the ideal action star in today's Hollywood. If you're looking for a story, find a drama. But as far as action films go; if you're a fan of the genre, this is most likely the best action film of the year pending completion of the year. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. When the trailers for Edge of Tomorrow first appeared, they deceptively showcased a generic sci-fi blockbuster awash in a flood of similar fare with zippy names like Divergent or Transcendence. It didn’t stand out. A friend quipped that someone should just invent a mech-suit so people don’t have to keep making movies about them.

I could see where he was coming from – we’ve seen it all before in Elysium (2013), Avatar (2009), District 9 (2009), The Matrix Revolutions (2003) and even Aliens (1986). Meanwhile, what appeared to be a sci-fi D-Day scene caused my brother to dismiss the film as Saving Private Ryan (1998) with aliens. This is absolutely true; there’s no coincidence that Edge of Tomorrow was released the week of the 70th anniversary of the D-Day landings.

So it seems derivative, but it is surprisingly creative. It manages to bring the best of these elements together and successfully decant them into what is, after all, an original film. It’s not a sequel to anything else, it’s not part of a franchise, and that’s always something to be happy about. It comes from director Doug Liman, who has directed many original action and sci-fi films, including The Bourne Identity (2002), Mr. & Mrs. Smith (2005) and Jumper (2008).

As suggested, the conflict is evocative of the world wars (including both the D-Day landings and references to a decisive battle at Verdun) with a futuristic twist. An alien menace has decimated Europe and is poised to invade the United Kingdom, and we’re thrown into the action on the eve of the last desperate attempt by NATO to push back into France.

Tom Cruise stars as Major William Cage, showing us once again that he still knows how to star in a blockbuster. Cage is not a real soldier; he’s a PR man who thinks he’s there to sell the war to the public. He begins with typical Cruise charm and confidence, which then shatters when he’s sent to the front line by NATO commander General Brigham (Brendon Gleeson, the first we see of the film’s solid supporting cast).

He ends up in a squad of oddballs (squadballs?) under Master Sergeant Farrell (Bill Paxton, who was in Aliens). Everyone has mech-suits, because it’s the future and it’s cool. Cage can barely operate his, and swiftly ends up on the receiving end of an alien mandible. The alien special effects are high quality; they are scary, inhuman and move smoothly but unpredictably.

But it’s not all over, he’s entered a time loop, which resets to the night before the battle each time Cage is killed in action, which he is, again and again. Ultimately, he is able to use this ability to turn the tide of the battle and the war by incrementally improving each day, both by developing his skills and finding out how to beat the aliens.

However, he couldn’t do a thing without Rita Vrataski (Emily Blunt), who was doing the same thing until she lost the ability. She’s a believably hardened veteran, and a hyper-competent warrior compared to the initially bumbling Cage. Though Cruise is the star, she takes the lead in the developing relationship between the two characters, even if he has to meet her for the first time every day.

The time loop inevitably draws comparisons further potential source material, in this case the classic Groundhog Day (1994). It’s also evocative of playing a video game; loading from a previous save point and attempting to beat the same impossible level over and over.

The film plays off the natural humour created by such a scenario, but it is often very dark, as Cage must die each time to reset the loop. Yet the humour works well and is perfectly balanced with the action and desperation of the larger campaign.

Edge of Tomorrow is based on a popular Japanese novella called All You Need is Kill, and some of the aesthetics, including the mech-suits and Vrataski’s impossibly huge sword evoke this origin. There’s another nod when the incompetent Cage gets his suit’s language stuck in Japanese.

Indeed, it is a global film, not just the American affair featuring Tom Cruise that it might have been. There are plenty of European actors, including Blunt, Gleeson and many of Cage’s squad. The opening sets the scene quickly with a composite of BBC News footage, and the film is exclusively set in England and France, with deserted, destroyed and military occupied scenes of London and Paris among the most powerful.

Cage’s character development is an excellent deconstruction of what we expect from Cruise as an actor. He starts out with a confidence built on cowardice, but is thrown completely out of his comfort zone. Over the rest of the film, the character works hard to attain a typical Tom Cruise level of action hero, which he doesn’t attain until the climax.

I only went to see it because my sister wanted to see it, so I went with her. I ended up seeing it two more times after that because I think it is the best sci-fi movie I have seen in the past couple years. The last sci-fi movie I really liked was Looper from a couple years ago. Dredd was good too. All the other big budget sci-fi has been rubbish the last couple years in my opinion (Elysium, Oblivion, etc).

Half of the few bad reviews I have seen for this movie say something stupid like "There isn't enough character development". Cruise is in a time loop, he is the only character that can really develop and he does...all the other players have no clue about anything, every time they meet Cruise, it is the first time they have ever met him even though he may have spent hundreds of days with them. The characters can't develop because they only exist for that one day.

There is no real romance between Cruise and Blunt because she is meeting him for the first time every day. It becomes obvious that he loves her, but she doesn't feel anything like that for him because she has only known him for a few hours. He has spent hundreds of days with her, but she doesn't remember any of it. Cruise keeps seeing her die over and over again on the Normandy beach, and there is a great scene only ~10 seconds long where you can see it is hurting him to see her keep dying like that. When she dies, he doesn't even try to win anymore, he just lets the aliens kill him so he can try again. He even tells her later that he doesn't want to go on and win if she dies because she will be dead forever then...of course, she won't remember that the next day, but he does.

I would give this movie a 10 if the end weren't so contrived and Hollywood. Basically a great movie with an ok ending imo.

I like science fiction movies, they give us best of imagination of one person and they also make it real for us to enjoy the show. But there is one big thing you need to watch for and that is story, it is most important part of every Sci-Fi movie and that is also what lacks in Edge of Tomorrow.

So here is short version of story, in a near future alien race has hit the Earth in an unrelenting assault, unbeatable by any military unit in the world. Major William Cage (Tom Cruise) is an officer who has never seen a day of combat and also didn't think that he will end on first line of battle but while trying to run cowardly from war, ends up in suicide mission. Killed within minutes, Cage now finds himself thrown into a time loop-forcing him to live out same day, fighting and dying again…and again. Each time he wakes up after he dies and try to figure new way to save people, in this battle Special Forces warrior Rita Vrataski (Emily Blunt) joins him. They both try to kill main source of alien energy.

Basically, movie picked up few plots from other movies and implemented in one story, i wont say it bad thing but in movie there is no new things just a bad guy turns good. Actually Emily (Rita) could play alone and movie would still be superb and that is how much Cruise contributed with his role. Don't get me wrong, i am not telling that Cruise's acting was bad, it's just that his role in movie was not necessary. Most of movie i was watching side actors that played awesome, and here i want to pinpoint Master Sergeant Farell (Bill Paxton). Tom also showed his full potential accompanied by humor and smart jokes, although Cage at the beginning of the movie was characterized as conceited and arrogant person, eventually his character progressed and developed to be fully flaged main role.

While watching repeatedly i asked myself, “WTF, how many time will he die like dumbass” but that part where he dies was amusing also in some way. Rita was badass role in this movie and she made me reminiscence back to days of Heavy Metal: F.A.K.K.² game.

Still i must say that movie animations and acting was good, alien creatures where superb animated. Plot could focus more on aliens and story beside repeating days but still is watchable and if you don't have any other option, check movie.

The film takes a look at the idea of (near) infinite chances to overcome the impossible, and dives into the tedium of repetition required to turn a severe disadvantage around. This theme of repetition; however, may leave viewers, who aren't craving more augmented action, wishing Cage's self-termination would be permanent. The suit technology is a compelling blend of near-future military prototypes (that makes reference to real-life technology in the works) that avoids being over the top. Superb sound and visual effects keep things chaotic, but believable, as Cage and Vrataski drop into an endless hell.

Edge of Tomorrow is entertaining summer flick that will leave you catching your breath in satisfaction.

I really love his animated acting.

What I didn't like about the movie was the idea of "time-looping" was becoming a bit tedious and just became an easy answer to get out of a tight spot. Despite this, the story moved really well, and I can't say there was a wasted moment in this movie.

It’s like Groundhog Day on crack, in a good way. The 113 minutes runtime follows Tom Cruise and Emily Blunt as they try to figure out how to stop an alien race before they take over the world; sounds simple enough. Early in the film Tom Cruise gets infected by an alien, causing him to relive the same day over and over. This film was a refreshing take on Si-Fi action due to creative turns and clever character arcs. The editing was top-notch, the best of the year in my opinion. Camera work made you feel like you were in the action and complimented, really well, the editing and acting. Another thing this movie really nailed was the strong female role played by Emily Blunt, it’s the strongest female role I've seen this year. Don’t dismiss this film as being “just another human vs. aliens” movie, because it’s much more than that.  The unique, time-reflecting transitions interjected throughout the whole movie, keep your focus. Quick, timely references to past experiences, rather than drawn-out flashbacks, really helped move this film along at a perfect pace. The only thing I can pick apart about this film is the cheesy unrealistic climax that seemed to take the easy way out. This annoyed me because the movie was perfect up until then.  With a little more effort I felt like they could have made a better climax. Another thing this movie did really at was interjecting humor in all the right places. Overall I found this movie very entertaining and surprisingly clever. Edge Of Tomorrow is epic and if you get the chance definitely check it out on the big screen. Expand

In "Edge," there's so much summer blockbuster shooting, crashing and blowing things up that it obscures the story and upstages the sci-fi intrigue. I liked Cruise in Oblivion, a much smarter sci-fi story short on massive and continuous explosions. Ditto for Emily Blunt in The Adjustment Bureau with Matt Damon. Expand

This is not his typical formula film. He is getting a lot of bad reviews, but trust me, it is much better than advertised. Very good story, very good cgi, very good characters. There is humor and action and some heart. What else do you need? It is also fairly original. Yes, it is a Ground Hog Day meets action movie, but that is original.

If you like action movies, this is a movie for you. Worth your $10 or $11 bucks for great entertainment.

Cruise just pulls it off. He reminds me of Charlton Heston back in the 60s/70s who did a string of science fiction movies like Soylent Green, Omega Man and the classic Planet of the Apes. One hit after another. Starting with Minority Report, to War of the Worlds, Oblivion and now Edge of Tomorrow. Cruise just does it cool. It's like what the Interview with a Vampire director said: Cruise has a way of centering your attention at the screen. The special effects were terrific, sound design, and pacing. Blunt was great as well as Paxton. A few gripes I gotta mention though. First the story isn't original by any means. It also lacks substance and suffers because of the length of the movie. I expected more once Cruise and Blunt made it to France to find the Dam. The supporting actors were just too cheesy as well. Shouting military one liners we have all heard a million times. All that aside definitely a great watch for a slow evening on a weekend. Expand

I agree with that notion which is why Edge of Tomorrow is so refreshing. It's a good thing that the filmmakers had the courage to make a movie based on a Japanese graphic novel titled, "All You Need Is Kill". Edge of Tomorrow has explosive action, a smart plot, and emotion. The action scenes are the best I've seen in a while. Battles are punctured with huge explosions and heavy gunfire. They manage to be quite intense and fast paced. The alien enemies called Mimics are like the Lambent from Gears of War but without guns and more deadly. They manage to kill Cage(Tom Cruise) and Rita(Emily Blunt) savagely and different every time. They die...a lot but not permanently. The way he comes back to life reminds me of a video game. Every time he dies, he awakens earlier in the day before the battle. So essentially, Cage must relive that day until he finds a way to defeat the Mimics. The premise may not be entirely original because of Groundhogs Day but it's executed splendidly. Tom Cruse and Emily Blunt play their characters very well. Rita is a likable bad ass and Cage goes through a big metamorphosis. The journey they go through is memorable and there are moments with tangible emotion between them. Oh, and it was great seeing it in 3D. There were a couple of times I lurched back in my seat when a mimic would come flying out. With it's intense action scenes, great plot, and emotional moments, Edge of Tomorrow manages to be the best movie of the summer so far. I hope you see it. Expand

The movie is outstanding visually, it is absolutely a theater experience, and the twist at the end, I didn't see it coming and not in a million years, maybe if it is an older movie there is a guessing possibility, it took my by surprise. Despite all this appreciated effort, I cannot help it but admit that the movie, despite that it took my by surprise, I wasn't fully invested, and maybe because I didn't have a proper cinematic experience, so I can't downgrade the movie for that reason. Having seen the trailers, it just never interested me. Luckily, the good buzz surrounding it convinced me to see it and boy am I ever glad that it did. The film is funny, intriguing, well-acted, well-directed, and, ultimately, feels "fresh". The premise has been done before, the classic aliens invading Earth story and now they just added the the time looping element from Groundhog Day. No way this can be any good, right? Wrong. It may not be overally original on premise, but the way it handles these elements feels anything but tired and instead feels completely new, providing for a fun experience. Tom Cruise killed it in his role and Emily Blunt was just as great, if not better. In addition, the special effects are great and the action is done very well, never really growing tiresome. Heading into this one, I was worried that the time loop would become tiresome, but much like the material they have, it never felt tired. Every time he starts from the beginning, it feels fresh and like a totally new experience, even if it is not. The only two negatives I can really come up for this one are the beginning, which was a bit sketchy for me and had me questioning my decision to watch this one. Luckily, once the fllm kicks in, it is clearly much, much better. The ending is also a little iffy. It is not a total issue, but it bugs me enough to bring it up. If you have seen the film or when you see it, you will likely know what portion bugged me. Expand
