Characters, scenes, dialogues all are made really well and together make perfect ansamble. Cast overall is perfect. It represents all races but makes it so naturally and organically (unlike other shows) that you just don't see any inconsistencies. Cast for the main characters is perfect too. Maybe Dave Bautista is little off in the role of villain because he is too kind-looking guy. All parts of this film are made to work together as one perfect whole. Story and its pace are perfect. This movie doesn't have scenes with histerics, shouting and all characters act really natural and as adults. All in all it is one of the best movies in this genre. It's not plagued with stupid cliches, isn't concentrated too much on action or psychological drama or parents-children problems. It is solid and refined movie and I hope it will save genre from decline. Expand

Superb narrative. It is a slow movie, but that's how it builds memorable characters. Looking forward for chapter 2.

Denis Villeneuve manage to hit the right balance with this adaption. A balance strong enough to make this difficult adaptation work. I just don't see how he could've made a better version clocking in at 2.5 hours. Would the movie be even better and more true if it were longer? Probably. But that's not how cinema works unfortunately. Even if we never get an extended version, I already know that I will be more than pleased with this one. I saw it twice at the cinema, and even if I unfortunately missed it at IMAX, I had one of the greatest cinema experiences I've ever had when I saw it at a dolby atmos cinema. This is without a doubt one of the greatest audiovisual moments in film history. I can't wait to watch it over and over on OLED when it comes out on UHD. To be transported back to Arrakis, again and again.

I'll be completely honest and say that I'm not Hans Zimmers biggest fans. I do respect him as one of the greatest composers in modern times, but at the same time I feel like he can become a bit too stagnant at times. His score for Dune is anything but stagnant though. I feel like it's probably the best score he's made together with Interstellar. Just a powerful force of nature that feels otherworldly and familiar at the same time. The DP Greig Fraser also did a wonderful job with the cinematography. When the news came out that Roger Deakins wouldn't shoot Dune, I was at first disappointed, but Fraser somehow managed to make me forget it. He helped frame a marvelous transportation to another world. When it came to the acting Chalamet, Ferguson, Isaac and Skarsgård all gave excellent performances and further helped solidify the film. Especially Chalamet and Ferguson, who without questions became Paul and Jessica. It'll be very interesting to see how characters from the film, as well as new ones, will be portrayed and develop in part 2.

Villeneuve continues to deliver astonishing cinematic experiences. Experiences that makes me question life itself and that follows with me long after the ending credits. For me he was already considered one of the greatest even before he made Dune. I've never seen anyone do what he has done since 2010. Seven movies, of which six I consider to be some of the best movies I've ever seen. Mind you, I have yet to see Polytechnique which came out in 2009. A movie I'm very much looking forward to see, as much as I dread it because of it's heavy subject. In the end I feel very inspired by his work. Inspired to keep creating, be it music or writing. And I can't wait for what's coming next. Hopefully it'll be Dune: Part 2. So that my longing for another trip to Arrakis – can satisfy my thirst.

The cast, the visuals, the set pieces are simply amazing and it shows how all those so called 'new classics' such as Star Wars and Harry Potter are clearly 'inspired' by this un-filmable book. What more can I say, just go and see it in the cinemas if you have to and that's saying something in this day and age. Expand

This one in my opinion is the best Dune movie yet. It's not perfect but I think it's the closest we've gotten. The cast is excellent, the soundtrack is perfect, the pacing was very good in my opinion it included the essential parts of the book, and most importantly of all it seemed very faithful to the book with one exception I noticed which is a change of gender and skin color for one of the side characters. Not sure why they made this change but I was okay with it I think the actress did a fine job. I'm very impressed with the casting I really like this Jessica and in my opinion this is easily the best Gurney and Duncan yet. I think this Paul and Chani have potential too, I guess I'll know for sure in the next movie or two. The special effects were awesome i'm very pleased with what I saw and I'll have to say this is easily the most sci-fi version of Dune I loved the air ships and all the industrial stuff and the cool costumes and the stilsuits and the space ships and when you combine all of that with the incredible soundtrack by Hans Zimmer it's just a really cool experience. Can't wait to watch the next movie! Expand

They were also able to avoid many of their peer's missteps. It stayed focused on the story from it's own unique perspective. It improved pacing by juxtaposing action with intense emotion and suspense. It will likely be remembered as the best sci-fi epic of the decade, perhaps the best epic of the decade. I know Metacritic is ongoing proof that reviewers think their job is something other than judging the quality of movies, but this looks like it will go down as one of their more memorable misses. This version of Dune should be recommended to any human being with even a drop of curiosity about anything in them. It is a modern masterpiece and I hope we all really notice and reward it's creators accordingly. I will go pay for it on the big screen and encourage you to do the same. Expand

People said the books were among the best science fiction works out there. As a fan o sci-fi myself, I went and read the first book in anticipation for the film. I was surprised by how well the film handled the complex story proposed by the book, which is an amazing piece of science fiction literature, by the way. Additionally, the movie impresses with stunning visuals, involving atmosphere, convincing acting, stellar cast and a fitting, although a bit slow pace. People might get frustrated at how it ends, giving way to a second part, but for those who know the story from the source material, it is for the best that they preserved a two part structure to better accommodate the whole epic story. I strongly recommend the film to anyone, and I believe those that feared it might not have lived up to the expectations or the quality of the book may put their worries to rest. Expand

Denis Villeneuve did this epic story justice without overloading the audience with details. His pacing of the grand scope of the Dune universe was perfect. I give it a solid 10 as the screenplay, art, cinematography, acting and special affects were all done with maximum effort. This movie was filmed on location and you can really see the difference in the acting. This allowed Arrakis to be portrayed as the hot and unforgiving world that it should have been and it showed on the casts faces. I'm looking forward to Part 2.

It took his time with worldbuilding and introducing characters and developing them with enough set-ups and pay-offs, even small ones such as Leto claiming he had wanted to be a pilot and later proving that he is quite capable.

Scenes linger, giving you the time to absorb the environments and the emotions it and the characters are trying to convey and the action is there but it not over the top. I struggle to call the fights "realistic", but they tend to be short, close-quarters and pretty brutal.

The only scene I can say I dislike is a short one in one of Paul's vision where he sees armies fighting with some of them performing flips and acrobatics that look more at home in a big superhero movie.

Overall, though, I'd say the movie is somewhere between a 9.5/10 and 10/10 for me and I am eagerly anticipating Part Two.

Before diving down toBefore Star Wars and Game of Thrones were a big thing in today's sci-fi Hollywood lore, there's Dune and Denis Villeneuve's visual interpretation of Dune is a cinematographical epic that must be seen on the big screen. Before diving down to the point, Dune is impossible to translate on the big screen as there were attempts that other filmmakers tried to do with Dune but never worked. Acclaimed Director of Mulholland Drive, David Lynch, tried to faithfully adapt Frank Herbert's Dune, but messed up due to studio interference all thanks to Universal for messing him up. Then, there was Ridley Scott and his vision of Dune was never seen due to personal tragedy which had him abort the project because of it. And lastly, there's legendary cult Chilean filmmaker, Alejandro Jodorowsky, known for his trippy indie films such as El Topo and The Holy Mountain and his savage version of Dune was the best movie never made all thanks to studios being greedy for not trusting him from adapting the impossible as he completed everything by creating the look and officially casting the warriors (Pink Floyd, Mick Jagger, Orson Welles, David Carradine, Salvador Dali, Udo Kier, and a name of few..) before it was scrapped from us. Jodorowsky's Dune was way ahead of its time that most sci-fi films paid tribute to greatest movie never made and I highly recommend watching his documentary before seeing the big thing in theaters or at home. Now lets fast forward to the present, we finally gotten Denis Villeneuve's Dune, and his vision of Dune is massive, provocative, and violently superb in each and every way that this film presented. The scope of Arrakis is enormous and uncharted in a way that makes the action sequences in this epic adaptation so badass as the music by the legendary Hans Zimmer and the terrific instant Oscar-worthy winning cinematography by Grieg Fraser steps in as Paul Atreides with his badass father Duke Leto and the Fremen fight the Sardaukar aka House Horkennen from taking the spice away from the planet. There's no doubt that Denis Villeneuve gets the long awaited Oscar attention he deserves after adapting the impossible of how complex Frank Herbert wrote Dune and it is masterfully faithful from the book. The characters in this film are awesome and realistic, the visual effects and costume/production design are immaculate crafted, and the story is mad epic for part one. It can be a bit baffling for some that don't understand how complex Dune is or thinking it's wokey pokey, but the action sequences and narrative tension in this epic is what made Denis Villeneuve's Dune so unique compared to Peter Jackson's Lord of the Rings franchise and Denis Villeneuve is the easily the best director working today and there's no doubt that Part Two must be made whenever he's ready to make it so we could see the glimpse of House Corrino and the feared Feyd Rautha in action. If there is a criticism that many share, it is the pacing of the first part of the film. It needed something to set the scene for us, to show us who the strong and the weak were. I'm not much for narration (show me, don't tell me), but it may not have been a bad idea. The scenes are magnificent with special effects off the chart. Many desert travel scenes are quite endless. It was like watching the first two and a half steps of an epic: Exposition. Inciting Incident. Rising Action. Then having to stand up and stretch my legs for an intermission. It's going to be a long and painful intermission because I was ALREADY PREPARED to sit through another two to three hours of this film, and now I will have to bide my time. It will be worth it. If this movie was good (and it was GOOD), then the next is going to blow our minds. Stunning visuals, and so faithful to the FEELING of the book that I even experienced something I NEVER thought I would experience again: The initial "oh, that's kind of silly and far-fetched" to the "I'm religiously invested in this world and its rules. Bless the Maker and His water...". No one can ever deny that Denis Villeneuve is a true-and-true fan of the novel. However even in condensing Dune into a two part film, Denis Villeneuve has packed in an immense amount of detail that will finally satisfy longtime fans of the series. Pretty much casting was near perfect. The weapons, costumes, vehicles, and architecture are in a class of their own, truly presenting a partially familiar, partially alien, and wholly immersive vision of the 102nd Century AG. The sound design and cinematography are also top notch, to the point where I really do recommend you see it for the first time in a theatre. Dune 2021 absolutely deserves the comparisons to the Lord of the Rings films in that it brings an exalted work of fiction to life in a way that will amaze newcomers to the series as much as longtime fans. Truly Denis has done something amazing here, and I hope immensely that he gets to realize his vision in adapting Frank Herbert’s work at least through Dune Messiah. This really is about as good as science fiction can get. Expand

Breathtaking is a word that describes Dune: Part One perfectly well.

It's just a breathtaking, beautiful movie from start to finish. Incredible screenplay, cast, cinematography, production design, VFX, stunts, costumes, sound, direction and score. Once again Hans Zimmer has created an immersive soundtrack that sucks you into the mesmerising world of Dune... it's the perfect accompaniment to Denis Villeneuve's masterfully created motion picture.

The final "This is only the beginning" scene will have you leave the cinema full of awe and wonder, completely satisfied and wanting for a sequel. Days later and I'm still reflecting on the marvel that is Dune: Part One.

Desert Power indeed!

From the most joyful or deeply human moments, to the most horrible or deeply inhuman moments. Sometimes raw and dark as life can be, sometimes wonderful and magical as life can be...

A universal saga in infinitely more ways than one... A mythology filled with values and philosophies colliding with one another... A multiplicity of beliefs, where certainties and uncertainties are entwined with one another, like two inseparable snakes seeking each other without ever finding each other...

Mystical and evanescent, as well as concrete and visceral... Dreams and premonitions, choices and actions, space and time... Or where the role that you play is written but is not, has already taken place but never will...

A cinematographic fresco that is immensely majestic and glorious like the greatest of paintings or the greatest of concertos...

... It answers everything while questioning you about everything, because it is simply giving you the pure truth.

PS : From the entire casting and their performances, to the cinematography+photography+design & visual language as a whole, to the action+choregraphy+music+costumes, the staging and overall atmosphere, the lore/world building, its entire mythology (and its codes), with countless messages and layers... Everything in this movie is pure mastery, pure genius.

An absolute masterpiece.

One of the best science fiction movies to come out in the last decade.

-Amazing visuals and sound.
-Great acting across the board.
-Story is well layed out and explained even for newcomers.

Not for everyone though as it has Denis Villeneuve's signature slow burn and subdued acting. If you are into more than just action packed films with one liners you will enjoy this though.

Only point of criticism I can find is that it ends too fast and needs a part 2 ASAP.

Left the theatre each time with warm fuzzies, a feeling that I had just witnessed something special. Similar to how I felt coming out of LOTR for the first time, twenty years ago. There are things shown in this film that I have never seen done, or at least never done this well. I have never seen sand tremble, shift and explode off the screen the way it does in this film. Or watch particles suspended so vividly in the air. And so it bears repeating: maximum screen size yields maximum results.

As someone who enjoyed the source material, I can say that most criticisms levelled at the movie would only be the same ones you'd level at the book. I say this because Denis' adaptation is about 90% faithful, which is rather striking, as it also feels very much like a Villeneuve film. Either way, the outcome is most welcome. Any details glossed over in "part one" (orange bible, banquet scene, Gurney playing the baliset) would have disrupted the gorgeous pacing of this film, which knows when to linger and when to move things forward, when to rise and when to fall, with a HUGE assist from Zimmer's flowing score. In an endless cinematic sea of big dumb boring bass drops, I'll take Dune's milles-plateaux "waltz" every damn time.

some of the internal monologue is missing but it's mostly the anime-ie exposition kinda stuff. Some people complained that some of the characters felt underdeveloped- Duncan Idaho in particular- and like... dude. he's the same kinda underdeveloped in the book too. The movie is beautiful. People who are mad at it are the kinda people who like to be told things rather than shown things. which is valid. some of the internal monologue is missing. it didn't really bother me or affect the story of the movie.

Literally whole run time I never felt necessary to blink! Each and every Frame was Out of the world combined with the exhilarating music it's a treat!
The pacing at start was bit slow although the setup and world building is legendary once the 2nd half kick in this movie is literally Mind-blowing! The SciFi elements were awesome and the acting was mesmerizing, the story was amazing and the direction is legendary
The whole politics and houses things were engaging and the action scenes it was eye candy. The desert worm scenes, the war scene and the Paul's dad's death scene was amazing as hell and the ladies entry before Paul's hand dream thing that music is literally chilling I had goosebumps
The extraordinary powers were not that focused but the visions were engaging the ending was quite unexpecting I thought it would end with something it felt like "why..I want it more" and it's keeping the hype for 2nd part. The whole movie was breathtakingly Amazing Imax Is The best way to have treat of this masterpiece

The film is very long and does have some flaws when it comes to pacing, but these points are insignificant when compared to the passion and detail that went into this epically large project. Just watch Dune, preferably in theaters if you're able to. Expand

Visually stunning with a great musical score this is what cinema should be all about. A story as old as time itself (biblical in many ways) the casting was also spot on. The young lead is exceptional as was Rebecca Ferguson as his mother. IVisually stunning with a great musical score this is what cinema should be all about. I would put this up there with the first time I watched Star Wars as a 10 year old. Truly epic, can't wait for the second installment. Expand

Villeneuve did it with Bladerunner and he has done it again with Dune. Made a masterpiece of scifi in an existing universe. Dune is slow, evil, dark, gritty and just plain beautiful. Cast is awesome and really hope that people see this masterpiece on the big screen and not just on at smaller tv. A must see if you like scifi. Expand

Best movie in a very long time. A heros journey starts and it was done beautifully. Acting, the score, the pacing and cinematography, to the special effects...A plus plus.

Do yourself a favor and go see this movie in the biggest screen possible, and with the LOUDEST sound possible. Cinema magic at it's best.

This is the Fellowship Of the Rings of this decade, slowly paced but wonderfully directed. all the plot points just... make sense, nothing seems to be undeserved or hinder the experience of the movie. Great soundtrack too.

A very powerfull adaptation of a book that was, until then, considered impossible to adapt. It has a slow pace, but I don't think it could be another way. The picture and sound are outstanding. Trully a masterpiece.
