A great movie with mystical vibes and giving a much needed fresh look into a vision that many magnificent creatoes have provided us in the past. Having been a great fan of the original vision by Judorowski, as well as adoring the Lynch classic, I saw this with half my expectations but boy was I wrong. I rewatched it numerous times and am counting down for part 2 and -finally- part 3. Can't wait to see the end. Never thought we would. Expand

The flavour of hollyw*nk for making sequels and sub-parts is pathetic!

As for this outing, followed the book for the most part.

Disliked the whispery vocal delivery Why whisper in the frikkin desert?? What purpose does it serve?

I dislike Timothy Hairdo in this movie. I dislike Z in EVERY movie, I dislike her as an actress and as a person. She rides rough-shod over Tom H which does not endear me to her at all!

The soundI have liked most of the versions of DUNE but this version was the FIRST one that made me feel like I was on a truly alien world. The cinematography is superb. The script was excellent, telling a complete story without narration. The sound quality was mesmerizing, it made me feel the stinging, windswept sand grains. And the acting was spot on. Stellan Skarsgard is imposing as Baron Harkonnen and he eats up the screen time he has. Can't wait to see more of him in Chapter Two! All the other parts - Duke Leto, Duncan Idaho, Paul, Lady Jessica, Stilgar.. nearly everyone was perfect in their role. I don't do this often but this movie is a 10 for me. You can watch it, feel it, taste it. You get the sensation you are there, among the characters in this harsh, quasi-medieval, space-faring universe of political intrigue. What a rush! Expand

I read all the books in Frank Herbert's Dune Cycle several times when I was young and later as an adult, and I was already fascinated by the complexity of the material. The booksI read all the books in Frank Herbert's Dune Cycle several times when I was young and later as an adult, and I was already fascinated by the complexity of the material. There are even Dune encyclopedias to explain this huge epic. The books are about the fictional planet Arrakis. Arrakis is a desert planet whose sun makes the scorching heat so unbearable that at certain times of the day, no one can survive outside without the stillsuit. Now to the movie. The movie is well made in terms of presentation and CGI, unfortunately almost everything went wrong here at the casting. First, the main protagonist, Paul Atreides, is played by a colorless and dispassionate actor. You just don't buy him the role. The quality of the acting is too weak compared to the book. Then the role of Duncan Idaho, a total disaster, here the serious character is ridiculed by Jason Momoa, almost embarrassing. Casting Zendaya for the role of Chani is just awful, has no acting quality at all, really bad. A total mistake. Now for the actual catastrophic miscasting. It's about the Imperial ecologist Liet Kynes. Liet Kynes was the Emperor's planetary ecologist on Arrakis and later a highly respected leader of the Fremen. He was Chani's father. Was cast by a black actress. What was that?! Why does one of the best science fiction novels of our modern times have to be used for the political nonsense of wokeism?! A real disgrace and defacing of the narrative. Also, the story can no longer be logical and coherent. The total mistake! Not only annoying but a shame! Another catastrophic misjudgment, or should I say forced political decision, the role of Thuwir Hawat, Master of Assassins and Mentat. Colourless, bloodless and very weak performance by Stephen Henderson. It just goes on, I don't want to list them all, but the only character in the novel that I liked and suited to in this work is Paul's mother, Lady Jessica, masterfully played by the beautiful and gorgeous Rebeca Fergusson. Next come the roles of Oscar Isaac, Stellan Skarsgard and Dave Bautista. Apart from these four good casts, everyone else was a hit in the toilet. In the second part, the great and highly talented Christopher Walken is supposed to play the Emperor, at least a small but small consolation. Film should convey an environment to the viewer as far as possible, using all artistic and technical means, draw him in and impress him visually. Unfortunately, this was not implemented here in the slightest. For a whopping $165 million production cost, this should be more than possible! Denis Villeneuve tries hard, but portraying a world in the year 10000 should be guided by more imagination and artistic sense, it should blow your mind and when you leave the cinema it should reverberate in your brain for weeks, unfortunately this film adaptation didn't succeed , although I actually really like the film. But only because I love the outstanding novels of Frank Herbert's Genius! Expand

Too long and ponderous, too many flashback scenes, only half the book is covered. Half the time it feels rushed and the rest of the time it feels too slow. It feels like the Atreides are only in Arrakeen half an hour before the attack. We don't get to see anything of the emperor, third stage guild navigators, folding space, etc. We see little of the Baron and nothing of the emperor or Feyd Rautha. Wellington Yeuh and Thufir Hawat are barely in it, despite being important characters in the book. Instead we get endless premonitions of Chani and vistas of the desert. Jason Mamoa is great as Duncan Idaho, but all the other characters seem mis-cast, particularly Timothy Chalamet who is too wimpy to play a future ruler who will set the universe on fire with his war of Jihad. He is dour and sulky throughout, as though he's just been told to tidy up his bedroom. Much like Blade runner 2049, also directed by Denis Villeneuve, the sets and scale are great but the protagonist spends most of his time gazing into the middle distance, pondering his "destiny". Much prefer Lynch's 1984 version of Dune - far weirder with more memorable performances overall. Not only that, we got the whole book as well. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Boring but artistic.

Dune introduces the audience to an interesting futuristic world that feels akin to sci-fi films from the late 1900s and early 2000s. Hans Zimmer composes an ethereal soundtrack that elicits nostalgia of classic sci-fi, and the visuals throughout the film create a beautiful and realistic-looking atmosphere. Though part of what breaks immersion is the blandness and emptiness of this entire world. The story focuses on several factions that are offered up as advanced societies, yet seem to be in the brink of extinction with how few of them there are.

However, where Dune falls flat is both in its narrative and character development. In two and a half hours, the narrative barely progresses, and it makes a large chunk of the film feel like unnecessary filler - that may change with its sequels, but as a standalone film, its a slog to go through. Because of the way the characters are acted, they feel (I assume intentionally so) devoid of emotion, which feels alienating as an audience member attempting to relate to and understand a character's motivations.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. In general I think the film is okay, good in parts, odd in others. I'm a long standing lover of Dune, books, film, games. Mostly the books. This film could have been incredible but... it's too dark and cold. Why does Arrakis seem dark during the day? Every item of clothing is sombre. For the most part this post Gothic look works but not for everything. None of the characters, with the possible exception of Paul at times feel fake and bland, nothing makes you love the good guys or properly hate the bad guys. Everyone is almost monotone and it's all the time. The acting is also sometimes off, poorly done. All of this is forgivable. What is not are the changes and deviations to the books which, is somebody's life/critical work; new people who feel they can be a bit whoa, a bit wey, a bit too cool and liberal clever don't get to F up somebody else's work. They don't get to take a famous painting and add a wee boat in, rub out significant parts just because. They don't get to take the Mona Lisa and make it somebody called morning Dave. So... why the hell is Keynes a woman? Why are critical statements not made e.g. when Mohaim tests Paul with the gom jabbar, why does she not say (in shock at what she has done) "no girl child has ever withstood so much". This may seem a minor point but it's not, it is a massive indication that not only did she want Paul to fail but that by succeeding, Paul is likely more than just a normal person. Before anybody goes around calling me sextet, don't be stupid, we are talking about a world in which the truly powerful are almost ALL women. It could and should have been amazing, it isn't and it's a real shame. Expand

The director has no feel for the source material and what makes the novel great. The pacing of film is way too slow. The film adds material not in the book to cover production mistakes. At the same time it omits key parts of the story. Had the pacing of the film been better and the extraneous material been removed, there would have been plenty of time to tell the actual story from the novel.

One of the major problems is that the film is woefully miscast. Timothy Chalamet is way too old to play Paul and physically is not up to the role. Due to this miscasting, the Paul of the novel gets transformed in to a wimp who isn't sure that he wants to become the duke. Several pointless scenes were added to the film to cover this miscasting.

Rebecca Fergusson as Jessica was a another bit of bad casting. Instead of the noble character of the novel (see, e.g., Francesca Annis in the 1984 Dune), she cowers all the time.

Gurney Halleck and Kynes were also horribly miscast to the detriment of the story.

Jason Mamoa is hardly the Duncan Idaho of the novel but this is the only "miscasting" that actually works in the film.

Because the story is so truncated (in material, but not in screen time) and this is virtually no character development, the film could easily have just eliminated Thurfir, Gurney, and Kynes from the film entirely with to no effect in the final product.

The sources material and budget were there to make a great epic film. This had the potential to be the Star Wars of the 2020's. Sadly, the result with Dune 2021 was just another Sci-Fi film The film is worth seeing but its only good and not great. The end result is much like Avatar where you just have to enjoy the visuals and put aside the plot.

As terrible as the 1984 Dune was, it did a better job of world building and has camp value. I suspect in five years it will be more watched than the 2021 version because it is more entertaining.

In conclusion, those saying the film is horrible are going overboard. Those calling it "a masterpiece" are deluded fanboys. Dune 2021 is in between, as its mediocre box office demonstrates.

That being corny, action, sci-fi flick with Patrick Stewart behind it. Then I found that Denis Villeneuve was directing it. Being the Director of such hit Films as Dune inspires with a cinematic flare and style which, while in the same wheel house as Blade Runner 2049 and Arrival I knew I would be in for a treat.

This does an amazing job of creating a distinct style both visually and story wise to make it feel like an entirely separate project from all of Villeneuve's previous works. The story of Dune: part one is exactly as it is in the book, hits a lot of classic sci-fi troupes for better or worse. The real star of this film is the pacing at which the story unfolds. Choosing to skip a lot of the tedious story telling aspects from the previous film Dune portrays the fall of House Atreides as a spectacularly corrupt and horrific affair. While not a perfect telling, Dune definitely a very unique and compelling one about religious fanaticism, betrayal, and prophecy. With all the quiet mystic and world building of his previous films Villeneuve masterfully displays why he is one of the most celebrated directors of a generation! My only real disappointment is that I will have to this on 2 parts.

“Desert power!”

Long ago…in a galaxy far far away…before ‘Star Wars’, ‘Mad Max’, ‘Tremors’, and ‘Game of Thrones’.... there was only ‘Dune’.

A story and world that gave birth to fantasy and Sci-Fi as we know it, as a main influence and many more for years to come. Although, I haven’t seen the other adaptions of ‘Dune’ with either of the Lynch or TV version. So, this is my first introduction to the world and characters, and something that was once considered unadaptable has become a reality all thanks to Denis Villeneuve vision. And now I'm interested in this world and the movie leaves you wanting more.

'Dune (2021)' - man what a trip. Incredible in every sense. Just like ‘Blade Runner 2049’, nobody does art house blockbusters better than Denis Villeneuve. A Sci-Fi tale of philosophical richness that's loaded with grand spectacle. While I didn't see it in IMAX, but that didn't take away from the scope of it all.

No joke, but this could be our new Lord of the Rings and Star Wars.

The acting here is strong:

Timothée Chalamet has impressed me ever since his breakout role in ‘Call Me by Your Name’, so it’s not surprising that he did an excellent job in this movie as the character of Paul, the young man in royalty whose destiny can lead him in either direction. Not bad for a kid who started off showing off his X-Box controllers on YouTube. If you don’t know what I’m talking about, type into YouTube “ModdedController360” and you’ll see.

Oscar Isaac plays The Duke, the father of Paul, and Oscar Isaac has yet to deliver a terrible performance. There's one scene between him and Chalamet that was one of the most moving things I've seen in a Sci-Fi movie since...well, 'Arrival' and 'Blade Runner 2049'.

Rebecca Ferguson plays Lady Jessica Atreides, who is easily the heart of the movie, and it might be my favourite performance from her.

Jason Momoa plays Duncan, the ultimate Chad, who’s a chill guy but is an absolute demon when it comes to fighting. Josh Brolin as Gurney Halleck, a cool but serious man who loyal to those close to him. Stellan Skarsgård scenes as Baron Vladimir Harkonnen, the bloated and slimy creature with a hunger for power and chaos, which also pays a wonderful homage to Marlon Brando’s Colonel Walter E. Kurtz in ‘Apocalypse Now’, through the visuals in every scene he’s in. Also, despite the small screen time he had, but Dave Bautista has proved that he has more range as an actor than most wrestlers who turned to acting.

Zendaya isn't in the movie that much, but I know she will be in the next movie. Her little scenes were very mystical. She appears mostly in visions from Chalamet’s Paul, which people have best described those “visions” as the most expensive perfume advert ever.

In terms of the visual effects and the practical work, it’s a piece of art. It helps create a sense of scope that made everything feel so big, so real and so engaging to watch. I can say all of it looked pitch perfect. But also using real locations for open spaces and made certain bits of environment like heat from the actual desert, harsh winds, soggy rainy, grass, and the breath-taking landscapes seem familiar to us in this “alien world”.

The score, make-up, costumes, production design, cinematography, editing, sound, and direction were all top notches.

However, the movie does feel like a part 1 and for some people the movie feels incomplete, story wise. But then again, if it leaves you wanting more and we now know we are getting a part 2 to this story, this issue will expire when the second one comes around.

I’ve finally seen theThe highly anticipated adaptation of Frank Herbert’s sci-fi novel Dune and a remake of the 1984 version by David Lynch. Yeah I know I’m very late to the party with this review, don’t blame me it’s been a mental year. I’ve finally seen the visually spectacular Dune and much like the fanbase for the original cult classic this new remake is sure to bring in a whole new bunch of sci-fi fans.

Paul Atreides (Timothée Chalamet) is the son of a noble family and must travel to the most dangerous planet in the universe to ensure the future of his family and his people. Also starring Rebecca Ferguson, Zendaya, Oscar Isaac, Jason Momoa, Stellan Skarsgård and Josh Brolin. A truly brilliant line up of talent altogether and Denis Villeneuve was the perfect director to take on a new Dune adaptation. Throw in a completely full on Hans Zimmer score and you’ve got the perfect recipe for a modern day epic. A highly immersive cinematic experience with incredible attention to detail. Everything is allowing you to fall into this new world and lose yourself in the magic of cinema. Epic really is the word to describe it, I’ve also seen the phrase space opera to describe Dune and I’d agree that’s an accurate description. I love the star studded cast but particularly Timothée Chalamet leading the movie, he gives an excellent performance. As a Zimmer fan it’s no surprise I loved the awe-inspiring score for Dune. The visuals, the music and the entire cast all perfectly complement each other to create an epic sci-fi movie.

I haven’t seen the original or read the book so I’ve no idea where the story is going next but I am excited for Dune Part II and together I’d expect Part I and II to make a terrific double bill. As amazing as Dune is it’s still only half a movie and I do feel frustrated that it’s split into two separate movies with likely a two year gap in between them. It won’t become clear until Part II as to whether separating it into two films will be worth it though in most cases splitting a story in two only results in a dragged out movie with a wrecked story arc, looking at you Hobbit trilogy. I can’t say everyone will feel the same but for me the feeling of all set up for a good portion of Dune Part I was annoying and I can only hope Part II is worth it.

It can be a daunting task to take on a big budget sci-fi movie and bring some originality to the genre especially when there’s an endless parade of Star Wars movies and TV shows to complete with. Villeneuve has shown us what he is capable of with Arrival and Blade Runner 2049. With Dune, he has not only created one of the best looking sci-fi movies in years but made something that feels new in a world of unoriginality. Recommended for all the sci-fi fans.

"Mirrors and copulation are abominable, since they both multiply the numbers of men" (Borges, 1940). Paraphrasing, I would say that the sagas and, more generally, the epic and the foundation myths as hypertrophic narrative that purports to minimize the gap between the map and the territory of existence, reduplicate its abomination, therefore they are invariably, inexorably, inderogably dystopian. I have not yet managed to grasp the usefulness of this compulsion to repeat, for sure it is one of my innumerable limitations. Herbert's text re-proposes the problem and Jodorowsky, Lynch, Villeneuve were unable to solve it: could they have? The sufficiency goes to the explicit tragicity of the beginning, with the annihilation of the House of Atreides. In a few minutes we see their noble ideals, intentions, projects fade, and the scene in which Oscar Isaac, the Duke Leto, is stripped of all this, is literally laid bare and, in agony, even fails to kill his own enemy, is something that I will carry with me and inside me for a long time. Concubine, son and fate of the survivors left me indifferent.

Maybe he wanted to make a trilogy or maybe even 5 movies but the budget is so big that he felt he had to make two films in order to assure that he could complete the story.

This film is visually and technically astonishing, but like i said before it’s so rushed and everything is happening so fast that you can’t take a minute to actually focus on what’s going on. If you’re not a fan of the Duniverse or have read the books you will definitely be lost. The screenplay and writing is good but for a film based on a book series with so much material the story is kind of lacking.

The film itself truly is a visual wonder, the costumes, art direction, makeup and visual effects are top tier and will definitely be a strong contender for a few Oscars. That being said, I’m really looking forward to seeing this new Dune franchise expanded into more movies and TV shows, with the creative talent behind it, this could rival that of bigger franchises such as Star Wars and other sci-fi properties.

p.s. Timothée Chalamet is extremely overrated

Every little detail matters, the cast is perfect I loved everyone in their respective spots. Chalamet is brilliant once again as usual and I finished the movie wanting more. It didn't feel rushed at all, it was properly paced and perfect. I've actually read the book so I'm freaking out over the sequel because there's so much more y'all aren't ready for. Count Hering scares me though... I don't understand the negativity people have for this film, it seriosuly a masterclass in cinema. -Peace Expand

But I don't think I expected what we got. There is an emotional intensity and just, humanity, to this version that I've never seen in Dune before. It's not even really there in the book.

I first read Dune as a child, and again when I was a bit older. I've read the second and third books twice as well. I've started the fourth twice, and left off of it twice, it failing to hold my interest, but that is a discussion for another time.

I love the 1984 David Lynch film. Some people do, others don't. It's very much a product of its time: a flashy spectacle with a flair for costume design and an excellent soundtrack. My memories of the later Sci-Fi channel miniseries are faint, but I can say it never captured my imagination the way the first film and the Westwood strategy games did. To say nothing of my imaginings of the lost 70s-era Jodorowsky adaptation.

A friend asked me if Dune: Part One made up for the Jodorowsky version never coming out. I told him I didn't think I was qualified to say. But this film brought the story of Paul Atreides to vivid, surreal life in a way I never anticipated.

The brilliant cast, excellent mechanical design, and soundtrack with incredible presence and intensity come together almost flawlessly. As a simple filmgoer, I cannot reasonably say how this film might have been improved further.

I appreciate the small details as well, like styling Chalemet's hair to resemble Kyle MacLachlan's in the '84 film.

Every so often a production with the budget of Dune: Part One turns out to be very good, and I reminded that filmmaking as a medium has not quite yet been subsumed by moneygrubbing hacks in suits who bow, scrape and grovel at the altar of Mickey Mouse.

I learned only just prior to its release that this flm was to be part one of a series, and went into production with full knowledge that it might not get a continuation. I can only hope its quality and success means that it will.

Empfehlenswert!

This “Dune” offers truly breathtaking visuals. In fact, it’s the best reason currently available for actually heading out to the movies. Films like this that can be best experienced only in a dark room with a huge screen, lightly populated with socially-distanced strangers who have turned off their cell phones (I’m looking at you, Row G).

Villenueve, along with co-writers Eric Roth and Jon Spaihts, has created a mesmerizing world for the moviegoer to inhabit. House Atriedes, long-time rulers of Caladan (a world filled with rainy days, fog and lush beauty – think Seattle, but a planet) is ordered by the Emperor to take control of Arrakis (known as “Dune”), a barren wasteland of strategic importance because of the hallucinogenic “spice” harvested there. (Spice is essential to interstellar travel, life extension and a variety of medical uses, all of which make it the most valuable substance in the world.) Turns out, House Harkonnen, previous ruler of the planet, isn’t thrilled to give up this lucrative enterprise. Treachery abounds. The leader of House Atriedes is murdered. The heir, Paul Atriedes, barely escapes, but is abandoned to wander in the desert, just in case the messianic overtones were too subtle.

Although this film runs over 2 ½ hours, it covers only the first half of Frank Herbert’s original novel by the same name. Even at this length, creating a coherent narrative is a major achievement. In contrast, in the 1970s Chilean surrealist Alejandro Jadorowsky created story boards for an epic film version of “Dune” with a running time of over ten hours. Astonishingly, Hollywood wasn’t interested. It would have starred an amazing collection of characters including Orson Welles, Salvador Dali, Mick Jagger, David Carradine, Herve Villachaize (the diminutive Tattoo on “Fantasy Island”) and Gloria Swanson. The lead would have been Jadorowsky’s twelve-year-old son. (If you’re interested, watch the 2013 documentary “Jadorowsky’s Dune.”)

Villenueve’s script has stripped away the pretentious overtones and general bloviating of Frank Herbert’s novel. The original novel is a piece of work, in every possible sense. Running to more than 550 pages, it was originally serialized in “Analog” magazine before being published by the little-known Chilton Books (a publishing house best known for its car repair manuals). Herbert himself spent time in a socialist commune in Washington state as a child. He was also a distant relative of Joseph McCarthy and admired his relation’s goals if not his methods. To suggest that his views are “eclectic” is to engage in serious understatement.

All this means that Villeneuve had to effectively navigate a dizzying range of topics that include ecology, psychedelic drugs, religion (featuring the Bene Gesserit – think extremely badass space-traveling nuns), authoritarianism and actual human emotion. He succeeds for many reasons. First, rather than spouting philosophy, he focuses on building a big, far-reaching spectacle that literally encompasses a universe. Second, he has an impeccable eye for casting. In this case, he’s selected Timothee Chalamet (“Little Women,” “Call Me By Your Name”) as the messianic son Paul Atriedes, Rebecca Ferguson (“Mission Impossible” series, “The Greatest Showman”) as his Bene Gesserit mother, Oscar Isaac (“Ex Machina,” “The Card Counter”) as leader of the Atriedes clan and a supporting cast that includes Jason Momoa, Stellan Skarsgard, Josh Brolin, Javier Bardem and Zendaya. All inhabit their roles perfectly. Finally, Villenueve understands that big ideas can arise and be considered without the need for mind-numbing exposition (that’s right, Mr. Herbert) or tidy resolution.

“Dune” has admirers from a surprisingly broad array of political perspectives, from Stephen Colbert to white supremacists attracted to the idea of a white messiah figure. Since its publication in 1965, Herbert’s weirdly compelling world has offered a welcome respite from the real. It offers a similarly welcome, thought-provoking diversion today.

A big disappointment to be honest. Was expecting a start to finish banger of a movie but only got something that feels like 1/10th of a whole story which just ends abruptly.

The visuals in this movie are stellar and really take your breath away. The acting is also very good here. The main problem with this film is that it largely serves as an introduction to the series. Which will be good in a few years but hurts it now.
