The movie is very competently made, well acted and will edited, but there just isn't anything about it that appealed to me. I am certain there are people who will really connect with the message of this movie, but I need more than a message to recommend sitting with this thing for 2 hours. I give it a D, just don’t bother. Expand

I don't know if they edited a bunch of stuff out or what, but there were places that didn't make a lot of sense. Relationships go unexplained, which makes the character's behaviors confusing at times. I would guarantee there is another 20-30 minutes of this movie sitting on Netflix's cutting room floor somewhere. It's a shame because it would've been so much more fulfilling otherwise. It also looked a little cheaply done - just 3 real sets, some (free) outdoor scenes, etc. That's fine but it did seem to detract somewhat from the movie. Finally, the main character Dumplin' isn't really that likeable if you step back and think about her. She's kind of awful to her mother, her friends, her love interest, etc. She has a big chip on her shoulder and wants to play the victim. How am I supposed to empathize with that? It could've been better if the acting of her character was more "fun" but she came off as being mean. It was overall a cute movie, but could've been so much better with more scenes/explanation and a less mean-spirited protagonist. Expand

Pretentious and boring and annoying.
I love Jeniffer Aniston to bits but dear lord don’t do any trash like this again please! I only kept watching till the end to see her.

I fully enjoyed this movie. It’s sweet, it’s corny, it’s everything you’d expect from a coming-of-age movie. The best part is that it is about the iconic Dolly Parton. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This movie is very interesting and eye catching. It tells about a girl that isn't very confident in her body and boosts her confidence by entering into a pageant that her mother runs. Even though she doesn't win the pageant, in the end she feels confident and ready to make the world her runway. Expand

We hate the movie no for the fact she is Plus size, is the fact that her character is stupid, do something don’t be mad at the world and don’t live in a stupid memory.

Good message but zero originality in both the story and execution. Netflix standard.

Dump this movie...

I saw this movie while on an airplane for 9 hours. Otherwise I would not think about spending valuable time on this kind of predictable stuff. There was this 1 thing that struck me the most: the lack of real human physical emotion between the mother and her daughter. There's this one scene in which a normal parent would not recite those typical Hollywood flawless sentences but would just close his/her kid in his/her arms and hug it firmly. No words necessary. A same scene comes to mind actually in another movie (no spoiler ahead) where the son has come out as gay (Love, Simon) and there is again this weird, rational dialogue between mother and son, where the mother is telling her son how much she loves him blah blah blah... but, well, she just tells him, sitting across from him in the living room. No physical emotion whatsoever! All the time I was thinking: Come on woman, just give your son a hug, give him a kiss... These so called heart warming movies with messages of love and understanding and acceptance... there all just fake crap. Nothing realistic. At least not the kind of reality I want to live in, or create for my kids.

Its cheesy and a bit cliched but the songs are fun, easy to hum along with and its an easy, feel good watch. Its not especially original but thats fine as I was only looking for an easy and fun watch - it may be corny but it does have that life affirming feel to it, which sometimes is just whats needed. I imagine quite a lot of people could relate to the main character, to the themes present (feeling like you don't fit in, the obsession with fashion and skinny figures in young people etc.). Its not a film to be over analysing or expect a great deal from but for what it is, its certainly not bad. I certainly liked that the film doesn't shy away from some aspects of things, it doesn't overly sugar-coat the scenarios, what is allowed and what happens at the pageant. Danielle Macdonald gave a decent performance as the main character, Willowdean, I felt, so thats good. I reckon this is worth a watch if you have Netflix and are interested in it. Expand

La trama es genérica y poco original; la recomiendo si no tienes nada más que ver.

Yeah it is only Netflix I know. Still a decent movie with nice vibes and laughter. Aniston still cannot act though...
