This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I know people are voting this highly but I must disagree as the characters are so different and I don't mean different in they have been improved but rather they have had their personalities diminished as a whole.
Goku has become a certified man child rather than a man with child-like tendencies.
Vegeta is a laughing stock of a saiyan even being reduced to the level of the cheap humor that Roshi was back in Z.
Gohan himself was a drunken fool wishing to be shot at believing he was acting in a show. This led to Videl being shot btw by a child Mai.
The storyline was bland given that the main opponent was the God of Destruction, it took way too long to for any real enjoyment to be reached. Also, when Goku reached SSJG it was with the help of a cheap way, 5 pure hearted saiyans, which included an unborn Pan (real lame).
The biggest thing that bothered me though wasn't the fact I stated above but by Bulma. Instead of the overly bossy, but good natured person we are given a rich brat unlike any Bulma we have seen before. This was a deal breaker, oh & did I mention Vegeta.. ( I know I did, but it still bothers me).
I would say watch the movie to know how the story line begins before DB Super otherwise avoid it.

Battle of Gods is a grossly overrated Dragon Ball Movie. It's passable but no more. It's passable but no more. The action scenes are good, the comedy is also OK (especially Vegeta singing) but the fact that they introduce a powerful new transformation, two powerful new characters (both of which Vegeta and King Kai knew of but never thought to worry about since Beerus seems to be someone they would worry about the most) and a retcon of GT.

If this is how Dragon Ball is going to go then I think Mr. Toriyama should have handed over control to someone else by now.
