But the best thing about the movie is Luke Evans. He's got such a strong pretense! Almost handsome, but what's more important is how strong he looks. Someone you would trust if he asked you to. If he is our first gay actor to make it as a leading man, it's because he's so manly looking and both men and women will love him. We shall see if this is the beginning of a leading man career for him. I've noticed him before, and he stands out in smaller roles. Zachary Quinto is the cerebral type, Luke Evans is sexy. He was also believable as to his extreme love for his wife. She was good too, but Luke is a standout! Expand

Avoiding the annoying cliches of the genre, we see Dracula from a different perspective, a vampire that exists for down-to-earth reasons and not just for the pursuit of immortality, hedonism and self-adoration. Luke Evans and Charles Dance did a great job on their respective roles. Of course you need to understand that, while this movie is inspired by the real Vlad Tepes, this doesn't mean is going to be historically accurate. It is a fantasy movie, not a documentary. Expand

Yet another example where so called experts ( The Critics) are so full oif their own self importance and believe their opinion matters more than the films content itself.

Dracula is a Adventure following the life of a young prince, who would do anything to try and save the ones he loves and bound by his duty to his people.

Full of great fight scene's, impressive Cgi and even a love story to boot for the romantics amongst us.
Sure its not the deepest film out there but it non the less makes for enjoyable viewing.

Definitely recommended viewing

Luke Evans pulled off a masterpiece with Dracula: Untold. The story is a mix of Factual knowledge on Vlad the Impaler, and then chucks you into the raw mythical brutality of Dracula lore. Acting is superb, you can see the emotional pain Vlad goes through to keep not only his family, but his kingdom, safe from the Turkish army.
Vlad makes a deal to gain supreme power to save his people, but not without a price!
Action scenes are phenominal and show just how godlike Dracula is, with the powerful attacks he pulls off and the immense speed and strength he gains. I was blown away in all action scenes by how powerful Vlad becomes and how painful it gets for him to protect his family and his people.
This is a must watch! If there was a fight between this depiction of Dracula, and all vampires from, twilight, true blood, and vampire diaries, im sure you can guess who i will say wins.
9/10, just because i was gasping for a least an extra 20 minutes of footage that could have explained a few mysteries left unsolved.

I wasTerrifiic! Awesome! Done research on the historical personage of Vlad the Impaler & have of course read numerous vampire novels... wasn't jazzed about a hollywood movie trying to combine the two because they usually cannot do it well. I was entertained & excited. Luke Evans was amazing in the Hobbit series and I was thrilled to see him starring in this. He gave a softer side (if there could be one) of the image of Vlad the man, a romantic husband & loving father and yet a ruthless leader when he needed to be.
A great, entertaining twist on on old tale.. very enjoyable....
And.. of course the critics ripped this movie apart. Which just goes to show the entire role of movie critics is outdated & needs to be abolished. This movie was not meant to be an oscar winner... it's not meant to change lives.... just entertain. Your hoity-toity, stuffed shirt, stick-up-the-butt reviews just ruin fun cinema for the rest of us. Get a real job.

Walter Charles Dance nails that vampire lord role 10/10 and makes me wanting really to see sequel. Luke evans nails acting 9/10 and he fits to the role really well. I liked this movie alot but i want to see movie that shows what happened in the past when the impaler was born.

If you are looking for a history lesson on Vlad, then go elsewhere. As a action movie, it was slightly above average. The story itself is nothing new or exciting but it was fun to see Dracula take on entire armies and win single handed. Certainly the Turks were portrayed as vile so it was satisfying to see them bleed. Aside from that, there is really nothing notable about the movie. Nothing really bad to say about the movie aside from the fact that I wish it was deeper on origins of the 1st vampire, but whatever. That's how I cameDistinctly I remember the warm summer evening during which a friend of mine linked me a movie poster, proceeded by the question "Castlevania the movie 2, is that you?" (we reffer to Van Helsing as Castlevania the movie 1). That's how I came to know of Dracula Untold. The poster indeed looked very much like something out of Castlevania, particularly - Lords of Shadow. As an avid fan of Castlevania and vampires in general, I kept an eye on this movie. Some time passed and there came a trailer. After watching it, I was officially hyped. Everything looked awesome - plot, acting, action: It was the first movie to fuse real historical facts about Vlad and the famous Vampirism of Dracula we all know and love. After the slew of awful vampire movies in recent years, this one showed promise and potential. I really couldn't wait to see this film. Last night, finally - I did. It IS Castlevania THE movie. And I loved it!
Gaming jokes aside, Dracula Untold is a good movie. I expected far less, even at all the hype I had.
This is director Gary Shore's first full feature, and he did a very, very good job with it. Writing was fine, with a few exceptions: times where the movie didn't care to explain it's mythology, or to explain it well enough. Also there were a few moments when it tells you stories, instead of showing them to you, particularly - the introduction and outro. The cinematography was done very well, most of the movie is beautifully captured, with the right atmosphere perfectly implemented. Action scenes are very intense, it's very fun to watch Dracula use his powers to crush hundreds of people. The overall plot was nice; it is true that the movie takes it's absurd liberties, but none are that bothersome. It is also true that it seems as if it is making preparations for a sequel, but it's not as much as everyone says it is. Soundwork was solid, the music - unexceptional.
Acting was surprisingly good. All the actors were acceptable at the very least. Luke Evans creates a different, interesting Dracula; I would have enjoyed seeing more of him with his family, or of his troubled past, however the movie does not manage to find time (or money) to do this. The showstealer in this flick is Charles Dance, who plays the Master Vampire, he played his part superbly, and if there is a sequel, I can't wait to see more of him.
Overall, Dracula Untold was a great film. It deserves a 7/10, but I'm giving it an 8. I was extremely hyped for this movie and even at that I had a lot of fun with it. If you are a Dracula, Castlevania or Vampire movie fan - go see this flick, it's worth the time and you will enjoy it. If you are not, you may want to wait to rent it out, but either way - it's worth a view, because it's simply a very competent, good movie that you are going to enjoy. It's good to see vampire movies going back to basics and recovering from that one infection.

While the action grips the viewer with awe, the emotion is brilliantly designed to fathom the rise of Dracula!

I can see why there are so many low ratings for this movie- Its a dark story with profound significance reserved for the few who can look there. My thanks to the producers for the experience!

Unfortunately this movie failed to capture this due to it trying to cater to a wider audience due to a bigger budget. From the main character being a pretty boy instead of monstrous like Charles Dance's character and being a man who was evil but is now good who then turns evil just to go good again makes it uncertain where universal was trying to go with this. There were glimpses of great horror such as Charles dance and a few scenes in the movie that showed the darkness that Vlad has been driven to once again, but overall the movies ending that writes off the whole film and seems to be there just to spawn a sequel and also some sloppy writing and uninteresting villains make the film pretty bland and left me hoping that universals future horror reboots will focus less on the action and more on the brilliant original characters. I give kudos to any film that makes a genuine effort to be historically accurate, and this screenplay is by far the most historical Dracula ever depicted. In the movie, "Vlad" is the hero who becomes a vampire to save his family and people, fighting the evil Turks, who are enslaving Romanian children. Critics are panning the film because they don't like it that the film badmouths the Turks and, shocking, has no minorities in lead roles (unforgivable).

The special effects are pretty good and the makeup on the evil prototype vampire that converts Vlad (played by Charles Dance, aka Tywin Lannister) is awesome. The outdoor scenes, shot in Ireland, are naturalistic and realistic. Vlad's castle is really cool, although it looks kind of like a set. The bat-related special effects were kind of overdone, but not so much as to be distracting.

The acting by star Luke Evans (The Three Musketeers, 2011) is decent and other actors put in credible performances, especially Dance's portrayal of the evil Caligula, which is excellent.

The fights themselves are rather tame and some of the production details indifferently handled (didn't they that when you impale somebody, the stick goes up the anus, not though the chest?) Nevertheless, the storyline is brisk and keeps you involved.

I don't usually bother writing reviews but in this case I feel I must. Having read the other reviews on this movie and then seeing the movie, it's pretty apparent that people are getting confused with what this movie is.
Let's start with the fact that it's not a historical biography. Dracula is a fictional character and while there was a Vlad the Impaler in the annals of history, he certainly did not seek the help of a demon possessed monster. Other reviewers have remarked on the how a whole country of people suddenly fit in a monastery. This is clearly explained in the movie that only a certain number of people are going for a particular reason.

Go and see this movie if you like a story and if you like movies and tv shows like 300, True Blood or Vikings (Tv show). Avoid this movie if you can't get past semi-historical reference points the movie uses to try and set the scene.

It's not the greatest movie you will ever see but it's definitely above average.

I just have to say, this movie is not perfect, it is really good, so it isn't a 10, but it deserves an 8.5, it shows us a new Dracula, the other side of the coin, and it is really amazing, yes, it is kinda like Castlevania LOS, but not the same. If you hesitate about going to see this movie because of the bad reviews, believe me, they have nothing to do with the movie.
Most of them are people that want to see the Dracula of Bram Stoker, they can't accept a new one, if you really want so hard to see the Dracula of Bram Stoker, you can buy the 92 movie and watch it over and over again, this is a new movie, a new Dracula, is not the same, they are different, and I have to say, that this one, is WAY better. They gave us a new Dracula, with a human side, with feelings, with more power. And I haven't said anything about Charles Dance, the one that gave Vlad his powers, he is a monster, he is like the Bram Stoker Dracula, dark, with a lot of hate inside of him, wants nothing but revenge, you're afraid of him, he is that monster.
I can hardly wait for the sequel, because it will be amazing, you have to see this movie, NOW!

Dumb fun. Without taking it too seriously Dracula did lack bite. Most of the action sequences were either poorly edited or too soft. R Rating was needed but $$$ said go with PG-13 guess neither worked.

This movie was **** epic. The only thing that could have been done better was getting the wife of the main character to have less melodramatic / out of place lines, but that's a problem on the writers side.

Great actors, great story, great effects. Thoroughly impressed and enjoyed spending money to see this, unlike so many other movies I go see. Also, comparing this movie to the retarded way that most vampires are portrayed today, from the twinkling emo douches of Twilight to the sex craved vapid fangers of True Blood, it was refreshing to see vampires in a movie that not only were deadly, powerful, and yes, even scary, but also retained their humanity and had more to their character development than "I want to bang you" or "you don't get me".

If you even slightly like medieval or supernatural stuff, this movie is for you. Finally a good vampire movie. I feel better now lol.

It's sad that so many more complex aspects of the film, such as the relationship between Vlad and the Turks, or even the personal relationship between Vlad and his 'Turkish brother' quickly becomes sidelined in favor of a less mature 'good guys vs bad guys' battle. There really isn't that much character development in anyone, even the supposed 'dark descent' of Dracula never really transforms his character in a plausible or sophisticated way. Everyone who knows Dracula just seems to be like, 'You're an all powerful bloodthirsty vampire? Hmm k, whatevs.' The thing is, there are actually some really good actors in this film, here and there, so I have to chalk it up to a family-friendly, Hollywood approved script that stops the characters from treating Dracula as anything more than the amoral badass who we're supposed to be rooting for rather than the brutal monster which the film insists now and again we should view him as.

If you like Dracula and vampire films, I'd say give it a go, but just as long as you realize this is a Call of Duty-esque rehash of a tried and tested formula rather than something truly innovative. If you don't like vampires, and you're into complex, emotionally powerful movies, don't be fooled, this is through and through a popcorn action flick.

IDracula Untold was a very good idea to a movie, and despite having very good actors (surprising from relatively a bunch of "no names" to me) I felt a bit confusing with the last battle and the last 10 minutes should have been rethought. I really did not like the ending of this movie and I never usually complain about something like that, but it kinda made me leave the theater kinda disappointed. Whereas if I went to the bathroom 10 minutes before and came out to find the movie done I would have felt good about most things up until that ending. I would hold this movie above I, Frankenstein and the Underworld movies; which is what this keeps getting compared to. Expand

This movie was Full of action from start to finish. I felt this movie was like...believe it or not like a X-men film but in medieval times.

Vlad was the prince of his kingdom but under control of hessian's
he was once a royal prisoner brought through the ranks and then freed.
for peace by giving the hessian czar silver offerings but this time it was not enough they wanted Vlads family and his country men boys for the hessian army.
Land views in this film looks amazing but some what dismal but
it suites the mood.I love the costumes use armor looked nice lots of leather but in a bad ass way. "Lots of FX and I MEAN A LOT"! I will not spoil the film
but this film was good and It will be getting a sequel and I hope it is just as good as this one. but it this film is not a full home run though at one point of the film I though I was watching a Dynasty Warriors video game but once that passed It was really enjoyable.
Money well spent but I would rather have caught the a first viewing
for ten bucks instead the fifteen dollars for the movie ticket.

I rate this movie and fair 8/10
being this movie was fast and to the point
telling of the story was cool to make Dracula more of a hero Not the soulless Demon that media depict this character as.
very memorable character hope to see him in another adventure.

However what we get is a swords and shields war film that tries to awkwardly juggle those two elements in order to give reasoning for why it's conflict even exists in the first place. The result is a movie that's more talking than fighting. Had the dialog been better and the action more appealing that might not have been a bad thing. In the end though we are left with a really boring movie.

The lines the talented cast (two Game of Thrones stars are present) are given are unbelievably cheesy and just awkwardly written. Luke Evans plays a hero who goes to the dark side for noble reasons, but there's no moral conflict. Our lead actress Sarah Gadon can't act. As a result there's no one to really root for in this film.

The Dracula aspect isn't even well used. It's part horror film, but there's no horror. Dracula simply doesn't feel like Dracula. His powers are on display, but they aren't exciting to witness and they don't add any spice to the lackluster battle scenes. Director Gary Shore tries hard to dazzle with special effects that present Dracula as a super powered foe not to be messed with, but ultimately what we get are brief, yawn inducing affairs.

The reboot of Universals "Monsters" universe is just plain bad. It's a poor start that's lacking in thrills. Perhaps it's biggest sin is that it doesn't tap into the horror aspect at all. Simply making the sky black, the world gray, and having bats everywhere doesn't cut it. It's not a monster movie at all. This vampire has no bite.

I actually was always optimistic toward Dracula Untold. However, I had high expectations/hopes and they weren’t met. It seems to me like this "genre-mashup" had a hard time finding its voice: it's not a romance movie, it's not a horror movie,I actually was always optimistic toward Dracula Untold. However, I had high expectations/hopes and they weren’t met. It seems to me like this "genre-mashup" had a hard time finding its voice: it's not a romance movie, it's not a horror movie, it's not a gory movie--it's more of a typical ancient war film with some romance, blood-sucking, and implied violence thrown in. If the movie were longer and had time to develop certain aspects of its atmosphere, then it probably would've been better. But the movie is too short and feels rushed. Dracula Untold starts out OK. But way too many plot-holes and inconsistencies make it a lot worse than it could’ve been.

In the beginning of the film, why didn’t Caligula (the so-called “master” vampire who gave Vlad his powers) kill Vlad when he first got the chance? Could a single silver sword truly hold back a vampire as supposedly strong as him? Did he sense that Vlad was a powerful warrior who he waited an “eternity” to find? Why did he want “a man of (his) strength to arrive”? When a group of Turks are sent to retrieve Vlad’s son, how come they make no mention of the 1,000 other boys they want as tribute to the Sultan (as soldiers for his army)? Since they asked Vlad for them first, why do they bring up his son first? How did ordinary bats manage to kill an entire battalion of soldiers? Sure, they were thrown and squished pretty badly (probably would’ve gotten injured), but how could ALL of them die? Did Dracula/Vlad empower the bats somehow? Why did the Turkish Sultan blindfold his soldiers? True, they cannot fear what they cannot see, but then how will they hold up against a sudden ambush and how will they fight? They should’ve at least taken off the blindfolds when they got close to Castle Dracula.

(%%SPOILER ALERT%% How did Vlad/Dracula’s wife, Mirena, survive a fall from a great height and then hit a rocky ground hard, long enough to tell him to suck her blood as a last dying request? At the end, with the final fight between the Turkish Sultan and Dracula, why didn’t Dracula teleport behind him earlier and kill him? Why didn’t he summon some bats? If, at the end of the film, Vlad/Dracula can manipulate the clouds, how come he didn’t “teleport” far away and THEN unleash the sun on the other vampires so he wouldn’t have to die, then be revived at the end of the movie? Why didn’t he use this to make his enemies unable to see well earlier? Also, why does Caligula say at the end of the movie “Let the games begin”? That particular statement doesn’t make sense. %%END OF MAJOR SPOILERS%%)

The film isn’t much like Bram Stoker’s Dracula, but I don’t mind that at all. I like this new take on his character as an anti-hero who has been through much loss. Luke Evans does a good job as protagonist Vlad the Impaler. Unfortunately, the rest of the characters aren’t developed much. The fight scenes look good, and the CGI is nice—but how are the scenes supposed to be any fun, when Dracula is too over-powered? The Sultan’s soldiers are little more than sitting ducks; it’s so easy for Vlad/Dracula to defeat them. Untold doesn’t feel like it has much stakes or suspense, as is the issue with most prequels and some origin stories (but this time it’s mostly due to Dracula being too O.P). I feel like too much was edited out of Dracula Untold when they tried to condense the film into a 90-minute running time. The movie should’ve been longer, because there was a lot that could’ve been developed and expanded upon. Mostly, the movie has too many plot-holes and inconsistencies, a too-fast pace, inadequate and sub-par plot/narrative, and lack of character development. The film is cool and fun at times, but it could definitely have some improvement. There’s too much unused potential for this movie, because I feel it could’ve been really good. If they make a sequel, they should get a new director. I agree with Rotten Tomatoes’ consensus—Dracula Untold is “neither awful enough to suck nor sharp enough to bite”. P.S, this film is meant to be the beginning of a “shared-movie universe” (like the Disney Marvel movies) for Universal. The second movie in this universe will be a reboot of The Mummy, scheduled for 2016.

Knowing this is what Universal wants to use to help kick off their Cinematic Universe (with 'The Mummy' reboot coming in 2016) well that's fine with me because Luke Evans does a good job in the role and the feel i get for it being dark like the Dark Knight Trilogy is alright as far as i'm concerned because it works here probably due to the fact that it's about a darkness seeking, blood sucking, vampire. But the movie has some flaws, If you know anything about Dracula (or have at least seen the Coppola version that came out years ago) then you already know how the story ends and the movie is sorta predictable in the third act. The movie felt rushed it goes the Turks are coming Dracula needs to be a vamp Dracula's a kind of vamp for 3 days if he doesn't drink blood Dracula kicks ass move from castle to church Dracula kicks more ass but isn't fast enough to save his friends who i don't think even have names he goes "My friend" and then their dead. Any way go to a church his people find out he is a kind of sort of vampire after about 2 minutes no one gives a **** just what ever our prince want's to drink it's all cool baby. Turks show up at the church after marching blindfolded cause they scared so of cause you blind them so they don't see death coming.
Elite Turks enter the church by going up a cliff face kidnap his son and his wife dies because she had to so Dracula would drink her blood and stay a vampire. Then he turns the remains of his people they go kill the Turks Dracula some how kills kills their King even though he knows that vampires are weak to of course silver Dracula's fellow vamp's turn on him and want to snack on his son and wage war against human kind so he gives his son to a monk who pops in and out and we know nothing about kills the other vamps by opening the clouds so sunlight can shine down his son becomes the new King to a people I thought got wiped out in the church. Dracula's revived by a guy that has TWO **** SCENES AND LIKE FIVE LINES than it's present day Dracula see's a woman that looks like his dead wife they walk off and followed by the uber vampire demon devil I don't know who changed Dracula at the start of this disappointment.
The only name I remember is Dracula I'm not sure if the other characters had names except for the Turk King whose name is said like two or three times and you won't remember anyway.

If you go in the right mood, you might even have a few laughs out of the hokey dialog and Dominic Cooper's Tim Curry-esque performance (utterly unconvincing as a Turk).
The cinematography and action sequences are quite fun to watch (the CGI is surprisingly good), and Luke Evans succeeds in giving his character more depth than the script actually had.
I personally would have preferred if they told Vlad Tepes' story without the fantasy elements, but still, Dracula Untold is satisfying as a "leave your brain at the door" kind of flick.

I will say there are some decent action sequences there and I think the idea of turning Dracula into an action hero, while admirable, doesn’t really work.

This film could be good for people who don’t really know that much about Dracula and just want a decent action film or a decent period action film, and hey if you like the idea of crossing Thirty Days of Night with The Lord of the Rings, you might get something out of this. But if you really enjoy the iconic character of Dracula and his history, this film is not for you. We will just have to keep waiting for that actual definitive version of Dracula.

That is not to say that it is not entertaining, it is, and would be if not for the "Dracula" in its title. It starts in a painfully predictable way, and from the get go i knew something was wrong. The main protagonist, the impaler, is not as he should be, a mass murderer of thousands who simply seems to have just gone home with no PTSD whatsoever after what should have been a terribly traumatic event.

Overall this film needed more grit, it needed less superfluous over the top action scenes, and more gothic style horror that many people expected. A decent attempt but overall dissapointing.

In the movie, Vlad is portrayed as a hero, loved by his people, with a past of some things he was not proud of. In the movie, Vlad fights valiantly to defend his family and his people, doing whatever it takes to defeat insurmountable odds. This is quite the contrary to what the actual Vlad was, both historically and in Stoker's novel. Obviously the character was morphed to be a lovable guy to appeal to audiences. Instead of being a dark, suspenseful, horror movie that befits the actual Vlad, the movie is a action oriented, root for this guy movie that Hollywood is already saturated with. Putting aside the clear morphing of established story/lore for appeal, the movie clearly cuts some tones down to cut the PG-13 rating. Anything Vlad should, naturally, be rated R in my opinion, but again, this movie is made to appeal to teenagers and heart-throb desiring women, so that is disappointing.

I wouldn't say that the movie is terrible, but it is not good either. Way too much lost potential in the story, the characters, and the atmosphere. Parts of the story leave the viewer hanging, not knowing what becomes of those story arcs. The ending of the movie sets up for a sequel, and I can only hope that it plugs the huge gaps in this movie, and takes a darker turn for what many of us expect out of Vlad.

Dracula Untold is composed of a couple terrific scenes, a couple terrible scenes, and a lot of filler in between them which in result makes the movie average at best. So let's start of with the best part of the movie, Luke Evans.

Mr. Evans makes for a fantastic Vlad The Impaler, but is too soon to say if he will make a good Dracula. This movie is more about the transformation of a man into a monster, not the monster itself. So again, the jury is still out for Evans as Dracula if a sequel is ever made.

Another fascinating aspect of the movie is the production design. The costumes, armors, castles, and fields are just simply perfect and fitting for this modern take on Dracula. In fact, the production design is the only aspect of the movie that reminds us of the Gothic nature of Dracula.

The action scenes are also very well handled, specially at the beginning and at the end. There's a middle section in the movie were the action is overshadowed by painfully mediocre character development. Yet, when the action is good is REALLY good and exciting.

Besides Evans, Charles Dance (aka Tywin Lanister) is not on screen often but when does appear he is truly fantastic. But nobody will expect any less from Mr. Dance. However, besides Evans and Dance the rest of the cast is truly mediocre. Maybe it was the dialogue or the acting, I can't tell. But in particular Vlad's wife and son are two particular characters that are truly annoying.

Now, the true problem with this film is the obvious attempt on making Dracula into some sort of super hero. Sure, I'm not against that at all. I'm a fan of turning monsters into some sort of anti-hero like Hellboy or Swamp Thing. But it's clear that the goal here is not to only make Dracula a hero, but to make him almost a mirror image of some of Marvel's cinematic champions.

The Universal Monsters are NOT and will never be the Marvel heroes. I love the original classic monsters, and I have my heart and mind open to see more of them in the upcoming years. Yet, I hope that Universal Studios finds their own ground in attempting to create a cinematic universe. What worked for Marvel won't work for Universal, as much as they might want to make Dracula (or any of the other monsters) compelling, they will never be Captain America. Simply because they are not meant to be.

If Dracula Untold is the first chapter of the Universal Monster's cinematic universe reboot, is an OK one at best. It has potential to be so much more, and I hope the upcoming Mummy movie really takes things in the proper direction.

So the towns people turn on him with an impending 100k army on their doorstep, some how blindfolding an army makes logistical sense, and the little boy goes from the tower, to the back of that dudes horse torwards the end within a couple of frames....miraculously fast...These continuity/logical issues are what's wrong with movies like this. The mother lands from that high or what? She's alive? okay. The fight with the douche at the end, he walks into the tent with all the silver, with 0 sword or sheath in his hand, then, when it's time to fight, he has one. Then, this super humans strength amounts to not much in the actual sword fight against an actual mortal, oh cuz he's around a bunch of silver? But some parts were just not worth it ( i am not a huge saga fan of vampire drama movies like twilight ... the only vampire film that is actually is worth is the classic is lost boys this one is well i have no words ). This is not a disappointment movie of 2014 this is actually good start of 2014's vampire genre improvement so far. Grade B- ,
One of the movies that i am looking forward to is seeing Alexander and the horrible , very bad day.

Told by a beautiful dark direction of the newbie ‎Gary Shore‬, Stoker's tale has found a perfect variant.

‎Luke‬ is ravishing in the drac shoes and the tale is brilliantly scripted. There are subtle glimpses that Shore uses like depicting rad scenes of war through the dead eyes of a Turk that makes things different. Although the action bit isn't that great and put out quickly, the story still keeps you rooted. Some clichéd pieces pop up here and there, but its our own favourite fictional protag Drac, what do you expect? The score is apt. It makes you feel the vampire wrath. Screenplay is good.

When we contain the awesomeness of Luke's gripping facial gravity, make it dark, combine it with some twists and turns of the legendary Bram Stoker's tale, add some ‪Cooper‬ to it, throw in some ‪Charles Dance‬ grim screenplay voice then lo! we get a good decent movie that has the potential to run a fine franchise on its own.

Can't wait for the sequel now!

If you like Bram Stoker's Dracula, don't expect any similarities with this movie. Dracula Untold is a story about Prince Vladimir the Impaler (Dracula), who acquires the the powers of a vampire to protect his family and people from the invading Turks. A lot of the movie tries to show how the prince resists to drink human blood and he's struggles with it. But it looks like he doesn't seem to suffer to much. First you see him shaking and almost trying to bite his wife, and the next moment he's hugging his son. The movies in my opinion fails to portray the struggle he's in. The battle scene's are pretty well done, but is a bit overkill. But I get they wanted to show the awesome strength of the son of the Devil. The final fight between Dracula en the Sultan of the Turks was disappointing. Overall the movie wasn't that bad as some reviews say. The end was a bit emotional but unfortunately not enough to convince you of the hard choice Dracula has to make. The acting all though is very good. Luke Evans gave a memorable performance, as well did the rest of the cast. Special effects where also very impressive. I a bit torn on what score to give this movie. I wanted to give it a 5, but it did make me a bit curious about the sequel that might be coming. So i give this movie a 6/10. I hope that the sequel will be more of a horror flick than an action flick. Expand

The concept behind this movie is pretty awesome, so I think it could have been a much better film. Sadly, it was not well made. The acting is pretty regular. I can think that a lot of people could have done better with the main character's job. The action sequences are interesting, but the special effects could have been better. The script is awful and the plot has some flaws. When watching the movie you are always going to feel that something's missing, especially in the beginning, never knowing what that could be.
Any vampires fan, or at least Dracula fan, is going to enjoy this movie, for the story it tells that he has never seen before. Maybe someone can even enjoy the action, but the movie itself is just another one. It's a pity, because this film could have been a lot better.

Unlike most Faustian types who make a pact with the devilThis is a new take on the Count Dracula story, and it gives actor Luke Evans in the title role a good opportunity to carry an entire film, playing a strange admixture of good and evil. Unlike most Faustian types who make a pact with the devil because they lust for power, money and knowledge, this would-be Faust is forced to seek out the devil to protect his countrymen and his family, particularly his son. His motives are noble and lofty—he has to keep the evil Turks out of his Romanian province, where he is a prince, actually Vlad the Impaler, so named because he grew up as a hostage of the Ottoman Empire , where he was trained to be a soldier who was famous for killing thousands pitilessly.

After repenting of such a lifestyle, he becomes a loving husband and father, and comes home to reign in his castle as the prince of Wallachia. Finding out that the Ottoman Sultan Mehmed (Dominic Cooper), to whom Vlad pays taxes, has come to town to recruit a thousand young men from Wallachia, including Vlad’s own young son, causes a crisis of faith. Vlad returns to a cave where he knows there is a monstrous presence, a vampire trapped in the shadows, who awaits someone to discover him, then come back to him willingly and agree to trade places with him in exchange for the powers of darkness.

Vlad returns to the cave willingly after he realizes he cannot defeat the Ottoman Empire without help. He makes a deal with the grotesque vampire—he can enjoy the powers of darkness for three days; if he resists drinking blood for that period, he will be restored to himself; if not, his vampirism will become a permanent state, and he will become the vampire trapped in the shadows. Thus begins Vlad’s challenge. He acquires fantastic strength and the ability to turn himself into a swarm of bats, but like all vampires, he is sensitive to sunlight and pure silver. Single-handedly he walks into a small army of Turkish troops and destroys them, much to the shock of his compatriots. His wife begins to notice some suspicious changes, and he confesses to her the pact that he made. Will the new Dracula win the war in three days?

The landscapes are dramatically dark and eerie, and Luke Evans seems to have mastered this persona, having just played a heroic leader and a protective father in the last Hobbit installment. Dialogue is ridden with clichés and character sketches are weak—self-sacrificing wife, evil sultan, horrific demon, handsome child, trusting associates, and robotic enemy armies. It’s all there, the difference being that this Dracula has to control his thirst for blood, which is the only plot line that lends the story some depth and complexity, since the eternal battle of the soul to choose either good or evil will always generate some interest. Evans is classically handsome and athletically fit, and his charisma alone is enough to make the film, in spite of everything, highly watchable.

Some people rate this movie very low because they consider it to be historically inaccurate. Come on, are there any accurate movies about vampires?

Also, some people rate this movie very low because they view it as islamophobic. That is impossible, because as I mentioned before, it is also about war and war is never wrong or right.

Just watch it with an open mind and you won't be disappointed.

Dracula Untold; the Dracula origin story of the legendary icon finally is here, and it's a hit.

Another origin story of another well known icon, you have been here, but do you know this story? I can safely say that you have not. It's one of the best Dracula-related movies out there, and it totally exceeded my expectations. I never hated the "Van Helsing movie", but this one is much better! Just the acting from Luke Evans is phenomenal. I never liked him that much in The Hobbit, but I totally loved him in this vampire-flick! The GoT-legend Charles Dance ^^ is just as awesome and thrilling to watch. Still, the first thing I did notice is the first 30 minutes and its background "subplots". It feels forced, "like the writers had an incredible plot, but had no idea how it should begin". But the greatest aspects are the stunning action-sequences, even though they all lack some sort of realism and feeling to them. The small but important thing is that the trailers did spoil some of the action, because there aren't that many of them, really. But the solid and somewhat different, modern and unique plot made the movie much better than what I expected to see. But the movie felt a bit too short and a better background on the events should have been much better! The main characters could also have had a better chemistry between them, could have tightened the bond and the movie experience even more!

But Dracula Untold truly is an untold story that's surprisingly great. It felt a bit too short indeed it did, but I had a great time watching, it and I was actually a bit sad when it ended, because it's such a good movie! It got it's bad parts yes, and there're actually very few main characters, but I really recommend it!

+ Stunning action, great & unique story and overall highly entertaining to the eye.
- Vague chemistry to the characters, lack of a greater background & subplots.

I have been a fan of Luke Evans for years, and it was a joy to watch him shoulder the burden of this film with a brilliant effort. Supporting cast, music (Ramin Djawadi), and panoramic visuals counterbalance the short run-time and poetic licences taken with history (though seriously, we're talking about a guy who drinks blood to gain supernatural powers, and the most common complaint is that the movie is historically inaccurate? smh). 6/10 For Luke Evan's anchoring performance, and for being a satisfying action film that doesn't outstay its welcome.
