This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. We went to see the movie Dr. Strange. We had somewhat high expectations for the movie. The movie itself wasn’t all it was cracked up to be. The story was paced decently, in accordance to other Marvel movies, but it had the usual Marvelistic go along with the story tinge. It would race through parts that needed to be more carefully explained to understand the basic premise of the story. Then, the main character was a doctor so they used terminology that the average viewer isn’t able to pick up on. That was fine. I can understand that. I don’t know much about medicine so I went along with it. But then it went into physics into a hemisphere that is still relatively unknown in science. The bending of space and time. Things got a little sloppy there even when they were trying to explain it it didn’t make sense to me. So the plot outline was that this pompous doctor is physically disabled due to car accident and is forced to be relieved from his work. His work is basically his life. He is revered as a top physician in his field. He is a neurologist. The tragedy shakes him to his core. He is jarred by his perceived incompetence of everyone around him including the doctors that did work on his recovery and even his potential love interest. Upon his recovery he feels emptied and left in an inadequate place to move on. He ventures on a journey to find healing through Far Eastern rehabilitation methods. When arriving to his destination he is met by the “all knowing one” who puts him on an humbling pathway of enlightenment so that he can come to terms with life in general. Once there, he becomes a master of martial arts and hidden magic translated through ancient concepts derived from an excessive amount of knowledge provided by an abundance of doctrine. Then with his newfound abilities he is matched against a master of said practices who had been outcasted from the temple due to his use of the “dark” magic. The story delves into physics, magic and eastern philosophy. That’s also a weak point in the story. It’s pitched to the audience that it is of higher knowledge so it’s not supposed to make sense but there’s conflict because you need to make sense of it. On top of that, the humor was predictable and usually came off as corny. Again, Marvelesque. It did have some nice visual effects. The sort of Inception type but that got old real quick and at certain points became simply overdone. Then the motivation behind it seemed to be inconsistent with it's intent. Also, the antagonist came off as weak. They met frequently but he was no real threat to the direction of the film. So either the movie was poorly put together or things were just going over my head. I’d give it a C overall. Expand

What’s it about?

A former surgeon with damaged hands named Stephen Strange (Benedict Cumberbatch) becomes a powerful sorcerer under the tutelage of a mystic known as the Ancient One (Tilda Swinton). Rachel McAdams, Mads Mikkelsen, and Chiwetel Ejiofor co-star in this entry in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

What did I think?

A highly polished affair featuring possibly the most impressive visual effects I've seen in the MCU so far, Doctor Strange checks off most of the boxes. The performances are top notch, the often difficult transition of magic onto the big screen is well-handled and Marvel’s penchant for ever-present humor is, of course, still on show. The storyline is a bit too simplistic for my tastes but that’s the danger of an origin story combined with a need to dumb-down complex concepts. Still, Doctor Strange is a worthy addition to the ever-burgeoning MCU and will entertain for a few hours.

Marvel already has the perfect formula for their movies and apparently will not change that soon.
Strange Doctor could be much more serious and less formulaic, would be great and one of Marvel's best if the parties with jokes in moments of tension were cut. Well, putting a joke in the middle of the fight with a villain is totally anticlimax and that's the big flaw of the movie, it's full of them. An exaggerated humor causing the impact of certain scenes to be greatly impaired. It does not give the story the seriousness it needs.
Besides, I do not have many reservations, the villain appears just to be ashamed, but this is already Marvel's custom and does not bother me any more.
The film entertains, but if the third phase of Marvel has started like this, I will not wait much more of it, and even bet here that the note of the next films will be between 6 and 7.

The final showdown is a s pathetic as the vilains. Why did Dormammu actually agree to Strange`s bargain? Couldn't he just tell Hanibal Le Chiffre to take the Eye of Agomoto from the ROOKIE sorcerers neck and destroy the sanctum with ease. But no.
a predictable formula that only impresses with its visuals not its cast or storyline.

Average story, prevedible jokes, anonimous Bad guyz, too much introduction, boring action sequences...and some characterisation is also not up to the mark or way off the comics (for example Ancient One).
Good: Scenography settings are a very good homage to psychedelic '60s comic books art.

Doctor Strange may not be as well-rounded as this year’s Civil War, or some of the other Marvel gems, but it is a really good film on it’s own merit. Doctor Strange features mind bending visuals, entertaining thrills, and a fresh look at the Marvel cinematic universe (MCU). Doctor Strange is yet another strong entry in the ever impressive MCU, which makes it harder and harder to argue, that Marvel is the premiere film studio today.
This movie described simply is like watching the avengers while on acid, and the special effects are perfect. In this film the characters dance between many different realities, and essentially within these realities everything can be manipulated by the mind. The special effects are amazing in this film, which is a true compliment, because many films this year struggled with overly digitized special effects. In this film, it’s obvious that there are special effects, but they look very realistic.
The acting in this film is very good, as Benedict Cumberbatch brings his usual intense personality into his character. The action sequences are very well shot, and the film is subtly very funny. It’s admirable that Marvel refuses to step away from humor, because it’s become their true signature. One weak point about this film was that some of the characters were very flat, the villain especially so. Unfortunately, Mads Mikkelsen gives a great performance, but his character is yet another generic evil character, consumed by a bigger evil force, with little development as to why. That being said this film wasn’t all that original, but it didn’t feel recycled either. This is most likely because this film introduced viewers to the more cosmic side of the MCU. Much like Guardians of the Galaxy took viewers off earth, this film takes viewers out of normal reality. It’s impressive that Marvel can have so many characters in so many different atmospheres. In the end this film is yet another solid Marvel film. It’s not the best marvel film ever, but it’s a very entertaining, funny, well-acted, and creative film that is perfect for viewers of all ages. The film struggled a little with a cliched villain, some marvel cliches, and the occasional overly-expository dialogue. For those with children this film is perfect for them, and for those who love action or comic book film, give this film a look.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The first scene opens and immediately the movie forces Dr. Strange’s genius upon you. You can’t escape it, except if you know the first thing about medicine you’d know that every so called challenging case he takes up are no-brainers. His overconfidence in his abilities, his blatant disregard for his colleagues including the woman he apparently harbors feelings for and his desperate attempt to come off as witty is a cringeworthy experience.

In fact, if you have watched House MD, you’d be convinced that Benedict Cumberbatch has made a desperate but failed attempt at channeling Hugh Laurie. Laurie too is British with a fake American accent in his show; the difference being Laurie’s accent happens to be quite convincing. While we are on the subject, Dr. House is legitimately wittier and Laurie is an actor whose acting skills are versatile, contrary to Cumberbatch who always plays the same old “high functioning sociopath” in every movie and is a repetitive actor with nothing new to offer.

As the movie goes on, we see Dr. Strange losing his dexterity which is a tragic event for anyone, even more so for a surgeon, but again I was unable to empathize with the character portrayed on screen. Why should I care about an egotistical jerk who is not even funny. This is a fault in the script which should have spent a little more time developing the character and feelings of Dr. Strange, and a little less time on the over lengthy CGI scenes.

The CGI was undoubtedly stunning; the 3D effects were outstanding and had great depth with an almost lifelike quality to them. The scenes of Nepal portrayed were astute and flattering. The kaleidoscopic rotation of the NYC landscape was as enchanting as it was captivating. Sadly enough, the visual aspect of the movie was its best part. Wait, I take that back. The best part was Chris Hemsworth as Thor in the cameo, providing us a hint to what’s happening in the upcoming Marvel movies.

That brings me to my next point, Dr. Strange as a superhero is not someone you would root for, or in my case, fantasize about dating. His cloak, in fact, is much more appealing than the hero himself. This makes me reiterate my previous statement, the script should have focused on character development because empathy is what makes Marvel superheroes endearing. Thor’s banishment and subsequent penance, Hulk’s fear of hurting people, Wolverine’s agony filled unending life and Iron Man in his entirety – these are some traits that made us love the previous superheroes. Dr. Strange has no such traits in his arsenal.
If you ease your eyes and look, you would see that in his cloak and superhero suit combination Dr. Strange looks like Iron Man from several angles, even the facial hair is exactly the same.

The thing I loved about the movie was that it ventured into the metaphysical universe and focused on spirituality and the wonderful human psyche which has always been a personal fascination of mine.

The character of The Ancient One played by Tilda Swinton is nearly flawless, right up to the point where she is stabbed and killed off in a sequence that seems unnecessary. It is true that unless the mentor is dead or incapacitated the mentee cannot realize his true powers, but unlike most Marvel movies, this trope seems excessively forced here. We didn’t even get the time to marvel at The Ancient One’s staggering power and agility.

Another thing that makes Marvel movies, well marvelous, is the presence of a slick villain whom you love to hate and hate to love. Loki, Ivan Venko, you name it. Dr Strange lacked in this department too. Dormammu, while powerful, was not slick enough and his Zealots appeared like the minions they were, right from the start. I suppose that might change in the sequel when Mordu becomes the villain that we would love to hate.

The dialogs are pretty good, especially the sass that oozes out of the side characters, in particular, Mordu with his Wi-Fi password, Wong with his stoic face **** and every other dialog of The Ancient One.
It is a onetime watch especially if you are following the Avengers-Infinity Stone plotline and for the stunning visual effects.

Benedict was acting phenomenal soo much that i was thinking in the entire film that they pulled character directly from the comic-book. Brutal revival of character!!! The film adaptation is fully revived beauty of mistical arts from comics. I am delighted with the creativity of dimensions and visual effect. Love the blend of humor and seriousness that was shown. LOve the idea of femmale Ancient One and Tilda was so amazing. What i like the most is that film emerged from the template by which they made the previous films in the sense that the template is such that the film tells story in first 3/4 of movie followed by the main battle at the end. In the Doctor Strange we don't have it in that way beacuse we seen through the entire film a bunch battles + story + main battle at the end. For me BEST MARVEL SUPERHERO MOVIE right know! Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I really enjoy the movie.
This movie reminds me of Naruto, Inception, Miss Peregrine's home, but it does not change the fact that I enjoy the movie.
I enjoy the fact that there is a sense of humor in the movie. The fact that superheroes are more human like than god like. The fact that it plays with your mind as what you expect and what you realise. The cast is amazing and brilliant.
For instance, at the beginning, listening Benedict speaking in American accent really raise my attention. The legendary ancient one, not an asian, not a male. But a middle age looking Celtic woman. It differs from your expectation. Tilda did an amazing job to make the character mysterious, elegant, smart, strong but not ignorance.
The part where she worries Strange is strong in power but might go to the dark side which reminds me of master Yoda in Star Wars. (and they call top sorcerer as master) In addition, Strange rejected to see Jonathan in the past, and now he has a taste of his own medicine when rejected by the ancient one. I would have elaborated the acting of Dr Strange on this scene to show the frustration and the lost of hope.
The conflicts between characters also showcase the complexity of belief. From looking at maintain the balance of the earth, to looking for an utopia. From enforcing the rules (laws) to bending them in certain situations, to question whether those rules make any sense.
It is a fun movie to watch. In addition to that, I personally have a lot to think about after the movie.

The Doctor is perhaps one of the least known out of all of their characters, yet he is still pulling in huge numbers. The big question is whether or not the film lives up to the hype, and I can honestly say, I'm not really sure. Dr. Steven Strange (Benedict Cumberbatch) is a world renowned surgeon, who is badly injured in a car accident. When modern medicine fails him, Strange starts looking for alternative treatments and finds a bizarre ancient group, that claims they can teach him how to heal himself, and do a whole lot more. The big appeal of this movie, at least for me was the special effects. I knew the effects would be good, but Marvel really out did themselves this time. I watch close to three hundred films a year, and I'm not often impressed by special effects, but the effects in this movie really blew me away. That being said, this is just one of those film you have to shell out the extra money to see in 3D. It's a completely different experience in 3D and you really will be amazed by some of the things they can do. As for the story, it really is the same thing that Marvel keeps doing over and over again. I've really enjoyed the Marvel films and while they are all unique in their own way, the underlying theme always seems to be the same. Someone gets hurt, they lose the girl they love, they find someone or a group of someones who help make them extraordinary, then they fight the bad guys and in the process get the girl. It's a formula that is in every single one of their films and it's getting a little tiresome. The bottom line, Doctor Strange is pure Marvel. What I mean by that is, it's the expected story, with unique traits specific to this character, a Stan Lee cameo, a cast full of superstars, two scenes after the credits, and perhaps the best special effects you'll ever see. If you're a fan of these films, you won't be disappointed by Doctor Strange. Expand

I am an enormous comic book fan, but I have never even deigned to pick up an issue. The reason being this; Strange has always been too well, strange for me. His immense, and undefinable power has never attracted my interest, and I've often wondered how a "sorcerer supreme" could be the source of any decent storytelling. Well, thanks to Scott Derrickson, I wonder no longer.

While bearing many of the telltale signs of the MCU, Dr. Strange is a rather unique organism. While an orgin story, it is not one of physical strength, or endowment of immense power, but one of magical study. Yes, that's right, magic. Not science we don't understand yet, pure, honest-to-goodness. abra-cadabra, hocus-pocus, magic. Dr. Strange, a self-absorbed medical genius, is confronted with an existential crisis, in which he must humble himself, and learn an entirely new profession. Cumberbatch plays excellently, a man who's entire world comes crashing down upon him, and who must remake himself as a new man.

The love interest, a crucial component of any Marvel origin story, surprisingly turns out to be one of the most compelling parts of the film. Christine, Strange's ex-lover, is there the entire film, not as a romantic counterpart, but as a friend, and several times as a savior. There is love between the two of them, but divergent from the Marvel norm, the kiss at the end of the movie, is one on the cheek.

The movie is though, carried almost solely by its action. This is the most unique and entertaining part of the film. Buildings fold in upon themselves, capes put men in chokeholds, and portals are used as a weapon in combat. But in my humble opinion, the best action sequence s the scene in which while being operated upon, Dr. Strange engages in astral combat with his enemy. It encompasses the movie perfectly. It is brutal and unrelenting, and totally unseen by the world we live in. It is hard to understand, and confusing; the physics of the astral world are left mostly unexplained, and the viewer must figure out for themself what the combatants will or won't pass through. Most of all, its funny. Christine's baffled expressions as objects crash around the room are hysterical.

Like I said before, I had no expectation of enjoying Doctor Strange, but I did, Immensely. Simply because it is so delightfully different. Marvel has realized that in this golden age of comic book movies, a tonal differentiation is required for a movie to be fresh and engaging. This is an excellent call on their part. While Doctor Strange's manipulation of reality as a cinematic technique can be a bit shticky at times, its definitely fun to watch.

Above all, the film stands out in its beautiful visual effects and in great interpretations of its star cast. Benedict Cumberbatch is simply perfect in the role of Stephen Strange, Tilda Swinton is marvelous with her Ancient One and all of her co-stars, Benedict Wong, Chiwetel Ejiofor and Rachel McAdams, this devalued, go well in their roles. Marvel, unfortunately, misses an undeveloped villain again, but Mads Mikkelsen manages to deliver a good performance, nonetheless. In addition, notable is the improvement on director Scott Derrickson, known for horror movies. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This movie was practically unbearable to watch. First of all, the characters are boring and one-dimensional. Tilda Swinton is the only interesting character, and Doctor Strange himself is so pretentious and unlikeable, I legitimately did not care at all whether he succeeded. As far as the plot goes, it's incredibly basic and poorly written. Basically, Doctor Strange gets in a car accident and has nerve damage in his hands, so he goes to Nepal or whatever and learns magic from the "ancient one" to heal them. But then there's a guy who used to be a student of the ancient one who is searching for eternal life, which I guess makes him a villain, so Doctor Strange tries to stop him. And then there's some evil demon in another universe who wants to destroy our universe, and Doctor Strange defeats him, and then defeats the original bad guy. It's so stupid. Anyway, my biggest complaint with the movie is how they never really explain how the magic works or what the limitations of it are. It seems like they can teleport wherever they want, and turn back time, and look into the future, and do pretty much whatever, which had me constantly wondering why our heroes had any troubles at all. For example, when the one bad guy stole the page out of the book, why didn't the ancient one just teleport the page back? Or make the book go back in time like Doctor Strange did later on? And when Doctor Strange was stuck in that infinite loop in that dark universe, how did he manage to break out of it? What's the point of making such a big deal about getting stuck in an infinite loop if you can just end it whenever you want? That doesn't seem very infinite to me. It was all so silly and confusing, and not really because it was complicated, but because the writers probably didn't think this stuff through.

The one good thing I will say about this movie is that the special effects were pretty impressive. Unfortunately, good effects alone don't make for a good movie, so I still would not recommend this movie to anyone.

Meh. More Marvel mediocrity.

Why does every Marvel hero need to be a white male who is either an arrogant condescending prick or a martyr (in psych language this term is often used to describe someone who has a poor sense of self worth and often takes on the pain of others to justify being loved)? Thoughts on the racial bias of lead roles aside, where are the balanced normal people?

This movie starts with a fairly decent existential exposition with an interesting exploration of the nature of reality. However, it soon descends into the normal Marvel drible of madman serving some unconvincingly shrouded reimagining of one dimenosional personified evil who must of course be fought, through brute force, by some previously mentioned prick/martyr to save the world and usually get the girl.

While I do admire all of these adaptations of the monomyth, for they do hold the cultural imagination, loosely, by their shaky reflection of these classic tropes, I find Marvel as always squanders the opportunity to do something truly great.

Movie could be the living bible of our civilization. Base entertainment could combine with high spiritual truth and myth. However, most film falls far.

It makes me for what purpose people write these movies? I would imagine for profit, prestige, and power.

Had they learned from the myths to which they owe their livelihood they would learn that such goals lead to naught.

A higher course would yield higher fruit.

I had had enough of films based on Marvel comics a long time ago, but I wanted to see three of my favorite actors (Benedict Cumberbatch, Mads Mickelsson, and Tilda Swinton) since I trust them not to make dull movies. I was rewarded with a film I thoroughly enjoyed, even with its crazy philosophy and wild (and occasionally cheesy) special effects. My one criticism was that it got a bit too long after a while, and I kept saying to myself “I thought this film was only two hours.” The Easter egg is also a lot of fun, and even witty! I think this is a film I will watch with great pleasure over and over again – even without 3D, which didn’t seem to me to add all that much. Expand

Time and time again Marvel hits it out of the park while at the same time reminding me why I hate the DC cinematic universe. I’ve waited half my life for superhero movies and I couldn’t be happier with what Marvel is doing. I mean, wow. They promised something different and they actually delivered and my god, was it beautiful.
Visually Dr Strange was “astounding” Marvel finally brings magic into the MCU and it was unlike anything I’ve seen in a comic book movie. I can’t really even describe it. Shapes, colors, rotating and expanding in infinite loops and sequences, it’s just something you have to “see.” It’s a “go to the theater” type of movie. I might go back and see it in IMAX just cause it was so visually astounding. As great as it was to look at I do have to mention the “fast-cut” editing almost ruined the fight scenes for me, but that’s really my only gripe.
The acting was good, the characters were developed, and it was faithful to the comic. The Villain, Kaecilius, was pretty good too, I mean you could see his point of view and it made sense. Also, I thought Mordo was “good.” Chiwetel Ejiofor is one of my favorite actors and putting him in anything make the movie better. He didn’t have alot to do in Dr Strange, but it was a great way to develop a relatable super villain with depth. I’m glad they treated him right. The ending was so smart and different, just like co screenplay writer C. Robert Carlyle promised. That’s how you fight a god! It reminded me of stories about Greek/Roman gods getting bested by humans or an aesop’s fable. The movie was smart like and very artistic. It’s in my forth place spot for top Marvel movies.

the fast cutting is what keeps it from a perfect score

Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. How do we solve a problem like Doctor Strange?

Here’s the deal, Dr. Strange manages to break away from some of the usual Marvel movie clichés and brings us on a yoga-studio-70s-acid trip adventure in mysticism and martial arts. However, there are some incredible drawbacks that cause the movie to suffer.

The main drawback is again we have a villain that has no character development. The first film in a new series always seems to always have a throw away villain. In this case it was Mads Mikkelsen’s Kaecilius. This guy isn’t even that prominent in the comics and in the film becomes another World dominated villain-of-the-week, not to mention he is always followed by his troop of beautiful and silent back-up-dancer thugs whose main job is to die one by one.

The good of this film however is how it beautifully integrates into the Marvel Cinematic Universe, again building to Infinity Wars with another Infinity Stone (time stone) being found. Benedict Cumberbatch and Rachel McAdam’s chemistry is quite strong and Tilda Swinton really does justice to the character of The Ancient One.

There is a lot of story and a lot of ideas and sometimes they feel quite rushed without much time to have everything properly resolved. I still like this film and want it to do well. I hope that the sequel will be even more grandiose.

Well it doesn't sustain! From about the halfway point it goes right down the toilet dissolving into sheer nonsense of multiverses, astral planes (I was with the initial premise even so), and resulting in monotonous overly-formulaic boredom. As a superhero flick, incredible plausibility straining scenarios are to be expected but when the very fabric of reality becomes completely unreliable as it does here, the stakes are pointless and the care for outcomes or how they come about completely nullified.

Take Superman for an example of the ultimate outlandish superhero premise:  a man who can do practically everything and is near totally invincible.  Yet because he is from another planet and the story told is executed thoughtfully and consistently on its own terms, it works. We are in suspense regarding the Man of Steel despite his too immense powers (this is regarding the comic book character and original movie series, certainly not the awful "Man of Steel" released more recently).  However with this story and its shifting natural world and changing realities regarding all space and time, it gets so ridiculous and totally out there that the audience cannot care anymore.  You cannot stay tuned to this mumbo jumbo after a certain point. So who cares about some stunning visuals?  I love the black lit alternate multiverse set pieces, but that's just a look and can never substitute for smart involving story.
Likely they stayed true to the comic book origin story with this script, however while I believe it was maybe great as a comic book in its time, this movie doesn't work at all beyond the decent beginning.

side note: Marvel's new logo sucks! They had it right with the animated flipping comic pages of the last however many years: iconic, simple, timeless. Now with the actual movie character inserts: it's already dated, too specific to recent movies, and cheap looking! Can't leave well enough alone when you're lacking in taste and analytical thought.

Stephen Strange performs a spotless debut within giant Marvel Universe, likewise, phase 3 of MCU ventures to new and unknown territories with "Doctor Strange". After a provoking "Civil War" at the beginning of the year, it was unimaginable to think that another comic from Stan Lee could surpass such strength, unexpectedly, the last spell of 'House of ideas' plunges it fully into new dimensions. Open your mind because "Doctor Strange" is the best and most original comic book movie of this year.

He is considered by many as an arrogant and vain Croesus, and by many others as a perfectionist, elitist and talented neurosurgeon in New York; Vincent Strange earns his livelihood based on a transcendental plan: Save lives. However, his strict purpose is distorted by the metaphysical. He is suffocated by his own avarice, opulence and arrogance; a flamboyant car accident brings him to the foothills of the Nepal, in Kathmandu. There, he will have to discern what considered "real" in order to carry out a drastic metamorphosis. For this to happen, he has to open his eye, mind and power. His professional purpose still possesses its essence, nonetheless, now he must save the earthly and parallel universe.

The narrative follows the comic-book lines to the letter, originating an origin story devoted to the emblematic style of Steve Ditko, decidedly, omitting the controversial alterations of sex and ethnicity in some characters. Marvel is in charge to design vigorous foundations and motivations for its heroes, and this is no exception. Affinities with Tony Stark are fleeting and overvalued analogies, each character has its unique properties, so the mind of Strange is energetically dissimilar to the Stark.

We have an unusual team behind scenes. Who sits in the director's chair is Scott Derrickson, experienced in horror genre of the decade, with films to his credit as "Deliver Us from Evil", "The Exorcism of Emily Rose" or his best film to date, "Sinister". This skilled American director, screenwriter and producer demonstrates his extravagant talent within an unspoiled genre; nevertheless, with his qualities in horror movies, it was axiomatic that the psychedelic "Doctor Strange" would obtain this excellent result, which has imposed instinctively some touches of horror, either in visual, narrative or musical part.

As for those who took paper and pencil to write the story based on the comics by Lee, are the selfsame Derrickson, C. Robert Cargill and Jon Spaihts, all of them are newcomers into the wonderful world of Marvel. Their unexpected assertiveness and originality with the magic film was a great surprise, considering that it is unachievable to surpass to the incessant and chameleon-like Marvel's winning streak, even more for a group of novices in action movies, however, this reality is one of many and it seems that they came out from one still unknown.

Alliance between Ben Davis' work and Industrial Light & Magic ("Star Wars") is the main protagonist. Cinematographer Davis dominates the way and tone of Marvel: He shot "Avengers: Age of Ultron" and "Guardians of the Galaxy,". But even he outdoes himself peremptorily with the kaleidoscopic revolution of images and colors that spins from a corner to another. The movie rests its potential in the many dimensions that has the concept of one 'reality' and very devoted to the style impregnated in Ditko's comics, Davis and ILM created the impossible, a step beyond in visual effects, of course, supported by a visionary technology by IMAX. Although it possesses similitude with the dream world of Christopher Nolan and complexes and reflexive paintings of M. C. Escher, enjoys of enough innovation and originality on the idea that wants to project; still it must take borrowed elements from other arts, the important is that they have designed their own masterpiece.

If Marvel needs to change the sexuality and ethnicity of its heroes to get impeccable performances like these, they do it. Astral and tangible world of the film revolves around the main role of story, a round of applause to the nominated for one Oscar award, Benedict Cumberbatch. The British actor has stolen the heart of million people with "Sherlock" of BBC, and arrives again with intentions of repeat his trick. Capturing esotericism and complexity of Strange's life, this experienced theater actor enchants the screen with a role full of assertive decisions: funny, strong, but primarily, all a sorcerer. Cumberbatch could be the replacement to Downey Jr in the near future. Swinton, Mikkelsen, McAdams and Ejiofor are a legion of actors that go beyond loyal and outstanding interpretations, and it was no wonder, the best film must have the more professional actors, it should be noted that we appreciate their performances, not their characters (villain).

It has not reminiscences with "Iron Man" or "Guardians" at all, "Doctor Strange" enjoys to be the most elegant and sophisticated origin story of Marvel. It is the first film with the flamboyant and perfect opening credits, takes advantage of its potential in cinematography, is an evident breakthrough in the soundtracks of superhero movies with Michael Giacchino, has a splendid introduction of the cloak of levitation, a surprising direction, and a magical performances and seductive action sequences in the hands of the actors of more popularity of the modern Hollywood. Marvel ends its phase 3 of 2016 at the top, leaving doors open to a universe that is ready to be explored.

The plot - for the most part - was pretty good. Benedict Cumberbatch was simply a great cast, his acting made Doctor Strange all the more enjoyable.

The only element which prevents the film from being amazing as a whole, was the uneasy vagueness I felt from certain scenes. This was mainly to do with how some key moments were explained - I felt that at times it was a bit too unclear for my taste making the film slightly convoluted and difficult to follow.

Overall, a very enjoyable film.

Inception fights scenes are met with gorgeous spell graphics and a strong lead. The clever humor can fall flat sometimes and the side characters are largely forgettable. But it doesn't hold the movie back from being a fun feast for the eyes.

He perfectly enacts the character’s fall from grace and his eventual rise into a superhero.

Doctor Strange has plenty of action that kept me entertained.
The space-and-time warping and mirrored realities are Superb.

Doctor Strange lines up strong actors who can hold our attention.
Gives the audience almost everything they’d need in a comic book adaptation film

There is one more movie which based on comics and … the best one!
It is known that it took a long time to make the film, but every second spent on preparation was worth it.
The film directed by Scott Derrickson and stars Benedict Cumberbatch who obviously is key reason to see the movie for Sherlock Holmes's admires. For me it was so, and he is brilliant there. Confident, bold and arrogant doctor, who might remind you Sherlock Holmes but only in the beginning of the film.
Moreover, all cast performed great. Although Tilda Swinton appeared in typical character for her - unemotial, endogenous, mysterious.
Anyway, “Doctor Strange” has fast moving plot and compels you to follow it till the end.
Of course, the fans of the comics already know the chain of events and it is pointless to build up any suspense. However, I can point out on amazing special effects of the movie. May be due to them you cannot be bored during the movie and when it ends you are surprised that 2 hours already passed.
I can assure you of having no regrets but joy that you saw it. For romantic people, I may drop a hint about love story in the "Doctor Strange".
So, go in the cinema.

Related media: I have watched all of the previous Marvel films but do not know much about Dr Strange.

What's it like?: It's like a good vs evil fight, among wizards, but the twist here, since it has to relate to the modern world and the rest of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, is that the prize is the control of time.

Pros:
1) There are some nice special effects that push beyond what was shown in Inception, but see Cons #2.

Cons:
1) The writing/story just wasn't good enough. Most of the characters' backgrounds and motivations were not properly explained. Most of the magical concepts and their rules weren't clearly explained too. A bit of explanation was offered at the end, but it was too little.
2) The Inception-like special effects, the fractal geometry and the spells graphics were interesting until they were over-used and they became non-events. It also left me confused as to what was going on.
3) Dr Strange did not come off as a likabe person in the end due to his multi-faceted character. I cannot root for him and I cannot root for the film.
4) Scenes involving the ultimate villain were only so-so. The most commonly seen villain was also inadequately covered.

How would the the different age groups rate it?
Children: (The film is not rated for children.)
Teens: Good
Young adults: Good
Medium age adults: Average
Old adults: Poor

Tip: There are two 'post-credit' scenes.

Rating: 3/5 (no half scores). Sorry folks. Save your money and watch it on TV.

Honestly one of the better stand alone Marvel films recently, but like I said this film is the average Marvel film, with some added advantages. First off the best part of the film are it's visuals, the film looks spectacular, especially in it's dimension bending, and reality changing scenes (Recommend seeing the film in IMAX), the performances are all very well done. Bennedict Cumberbatch being a great Doctor Strange, and the rest of the cast doing their parts well enough. The films ultimate flaw is, as I said, it's a little to predictable and average. The action's better than most Marvel movies, but it all feels the same, the villain isn't awful, but like most isn't all that memorable or menacing. Doctor Strange is one of the better MCU films but still has the flaws that the rest of the MCU is plagued with. The performances are good, The Visuals are freaking amazing, but just doesn't have have enough new things to bring to the table to make it really rise up from the MCU Expand

It was a beautiful movie, with great special effects, but no pictures I'll keep in my mind. The story was logical and well executed, giving a good amount of characterization and a significant understanding of the stakes, without spending any excess time on side trips. The pacing kept the movie moving forwards at all times without sacrificing the individual scenes. The actors personified their characters effectively. It also provides some good hooks for the future in a way that enhances this movie, and without ever feeling like they should have explored them further in this movie.

I will never need to watch this movie again, but it was an extremely nice way to spend a couple hours, and it gives me hope for the future of the character in MCU, and somewhat for the MCU itself.

DOCTOR STRANGE REVIEW

Doctor Strange is here. This is one of the most unique Marvel properties, and the first MCU Property that Marvel had to go full magic with. Lot of the other characters that should have been using magic in the MCU has not really done so, and was always able to be explained through science and technology. That buck stops here with Doctor Strange, first magical character to grace the Marvel Cinematic Universe. And it is brought to life by one of the most talented actors in Hollywood right now. And for the most part it works, it is entertaining and fun and that's great but it doesn't really go above that factor.

This is going to be strange sounding but Doctor Strange to me seems almost like a remake of Iron Man, with another skin over it, there are a ton of similarities between the two movies which I am not going to spoil here, but they are not hard to see. Cumberbatch as Stephen Strange is really good and really manages to bring the wonder to the character even though his American accent is a bit hard to stomache at times, it does not detract from his performance as Stephen Strange. And this is not his fault, but with the screenplay he was given, he had to channel another Marvel hero quite a bit, which at least for me was a bit detracting. Without spoiling anything that wasn't already seen in the trailer, Stephen Strange is a doctor that gets thrust into world of magic after an accident, and this is where he meets the Ancient One played by multi talented Tilda Swinton. And she is also more than capable of carrying her part even though the character of Ancient One in the comic books is an elderly Asian guy, that does not detract from the mission she had in the movie.

Other characters in this movie involve Mads Mikkelsen of Hannibal and James Bond fame as the pseudo-villain of the movie which rejected the Ancient One's training and is trying to create a cult of his own, and again with what he was given he was alright but not much was given to him to do. Entire threat that Doctor Strange needs to face throughout the movie are like five or ten magical users, and the movie again does an Avenger trope of hey lets beat up on the minions until we get to the main boss. Problem is there never really seems to be a much of a threat here. Chiwetel Eijofor is also in this movie as Mordo, and well again he was not really given much to do, he is a trainer for Strange, and a guardian for him.

This movie was directed by Scott Derickson of Sinister fame (or infamy) for others, and I was really hoping he would bring that visual flair that he brought to Sinister, not so much make it a horror movie, but for the movie have that feeling of impending darkness and dwelling of doom from time to time. And I don't know if this was intentional or not, but when we were supposed to be coming to those parts movie actually turned to another movie from another franchise back in 1997 which I will not name but it does involve Bats and Birds (*wink wink*). And I found that a bit distracting.

Visually movie looks great with use of magic and some of the fights are spectacular to watch. I have not seen the movie in 3D, and part of me wishes that I did and the other part is very very glad I did not, as a lot of the scenes are very Inception like, but in a sense it is Inception to the nth degree where the confusion can set into place, and lot of it looks like you are watching a movie through a Kaledioscope, which looks beautiful don't get me wrong, but prolonged exposure can give you headaches!

And more thing that is worth mentioning is costume design in this movie is phenomenal and they could not have made Doctor Strange's cloak and full costume any better!

There are 2 post credit scenes that I won't spoil, but one of them I sure you can guess what it is, if you are familiar with the comics at all.

Overall movie is enjoyable watch, its not nearly the best Marvel movie and is far from being the worst one as well, if you can overlook the similarities between this and the other Marvel movie that proceeded it, you might be able to enjoy the story little bit more than me. Just make sure you understand that is in origin story and same with any origin story, there is a ton of exposition where they try to bombard you with information you may or may not need to have. Visuals are fun to watch, even sometimes distracting, and movie is definetely worth watching for Cumberbatch's and Swinton's performances which are alone worth price of admission. Just get past his American accent.

In addition, we're presented with what's easily Marvel's trippiest film yet! The effects are dazzling and truly a sight to behold, but admittedly did get a bit too colorful and all over the place at times for my liking. The story of Steven Strange is one tread upon repeatedly, using what I like to call the Marvel Origin Movie Formula: Person has a problem, finds solution via gaining/making powers, training montage of improving those abilities, enter main villain, small fight with villain leading up to bigger fight with villain. There are, however, several points that this movie vastly breaks away from the mold. The first point is the setting. Magic might have been touched upon in Thor, but they go head first into the deep end of using magic in this movie. It helps it to stand out from the other films. Second is the climax. It's a clever change from the usual ultimate battle finale we've come to expect from these films, having Strange use his brain instead of his power to win.

The characters are, unfortunately, total retreads as well. Dr. Strange particularly feels like another Tony Stark. A lot of the character development is easy to see coming, though I have to say there are a few scenes that, again, help to break away from the usual for Marvel. The villain of the picture has a nice monologue that, gasp, gives him character. Not a lot, but it's more than usual for many Marvel movie villains. Unfortunately, he and a particular other villain seem to be cast aside, but thankfully there's a chance left open for both of them to come back rather than just outright crossing them off. There's a touching and interesting scene with the mentor of the film, and it's nice that, in a refreshing change of pace, everyone is willing to call out the main character for his...Stark-ness.

The action in this movie is pretty damn cool, mostly because of said effects being incorporated into it. There is one particular shot in the movie that I think was meant to be the big "HELL YEAH" moment, and I am so very, very glad that it wasn't spoiled in advertising because it made that shot all the more glamorous.

The long and short of the film is this: If you love the Marvel Origin Movie formula, you'll love this movie. If you're getting tired of the formula, you'll be pleasantly surprised with a couple of things in the film and enjoy the new atmosphere made by being immersed in the magical side of the MCU. Strange is a good addition to the MCU, but it's hard to look past the fact that Marvel's kinda stuck in a rut with the formula. Here's hoping Spider-Man and Black Panther will break the mold.

This kind of movie is getting really stale, I don't read comic books but like good movies and this is only an average movie. Kaecilius is yet another underpowered, bland, villain that poses no real threat, so there is no suspense or tension, its just another by the numbers forgettable superhero film. Expand

I enjoyed this movie! This was one of the few movies that I thought used 3D well. I am not a big fan of 3D. It took it's time developing the main character and wasn't all special effects laden action like most comic based movies. However,I enjoyed this movie! This was one of the few movies that I thought used 3D well. I am not a big fan of 3D. It took it's time developing the main character and wasn't all special effects laden action like most comic based movies. However, I would have liked to see more different kinds of magic. Rather than come up with a large variety of magic spells, they just kept repeating the spells that you had already seen. They should have given Mads Mikkelsen as the villain more screen time. He is a great presence in all of the movies that I have seen him in. I also liked Benedict Cumberbatch as Dr. Strange.

Strange spends most of the movie adjusting to his new role. I'm excited to see the next Strange tale now that he has embraced his role. I think this character has a lot of potential. There are 2 separate additional scenes at the end of the movie. The 1st after the cast credits is only targeted at humor. The 2nd after the film credits sets up the sequel. I'm skeptical about their chosen sequel plot and the character motivations behind it.

It also has a very similar narrative structure, since the first half takes its time to fully establish the protagonist, and the second is more dedicated to the larger-than-life threat he has to stop (Batman Begins also comes to mind).

Despite being an arrogant jerk, Stephen Strange is easy to like thanks to a nuanced and charismatic performance from Benedict Cumberbatch. The supporting cast is equally great as well, even though Rachel McAdams doesn't get a lot to do.

Scott Derrickson's direction provides visuals that look like a Steve Ditko comic coming to life, genuinely heartbreaking moments and out-of-the-box action scenes. But I was surprised that the movie wasn't any scary considering the subject matter (alternate dimensions and sorcery) and Derrickson's horror background. The humor is hit and miss (the singer name-dropping was pretty lame), but the actors' delivery gives it more punch.

The movie's biggest problem is that its pacing gets overly fast at times, especially considering there's a lot of information to digest. The second act in particular barely has any moments to breathe.

Doctor Strange stays within the safe boundaries we've come to expect from Marvel, but that doesn't stop it from being a generally satisfying entry in the series.

The film's two biggest strengths are definitely its acting and cinematography. The CG is fantastic, paranormal, and original, and the cast is top-notch. Despite a familiar general style of origin story, Doctor Strange is a great film that continues Marvel's unstoppable run of creating blockbusters from thin air. Expand

Going into this movie, I’m not very familiar with Dr. Strange as a character so I went to see the movie with very low knowledge about the character. I came out of this movie surprised about how good it was, everything in this movie from start to finish is amazing. The pacing is extremely well balanced, I didn’t feel a bit of boredom throughout the entire movie, the script writing was excellent and all the humor felt in place. The plot was very good and was explained using a very good story, it didn’t have any boring or uninteresting sub-plots that have no relevance in the movie. The action sequences are very well done, don’t let me get started about how amazing the visuals were. Probably the only downside to this movie is the villain, it’s seems to be a reoccurring problem in the MCU. The villain Kaecilius wasn’t really flushed out like all the other characters in the movie and his motivation was very unclear and was left unexplained throughout the course of the movie. To summarize it, Dr. Strange is an amazing movie with very minimum downsides. Expand
