Benedict Cumberbatch successfully portrays the famous but arrogant Dr. Stephen Strange who goes on a mystical journey in Tibet to heal himself but ends up learning how to use magic and defend the world from cosmic threats. Tilda Swinton is good as the Ancient One. Mads Mikkelsen makes a good villain in Kaecilius, but Dormammu is a bit disappointing. The action sequences are mind boggling and easily surpass all the trippy psychedelia of Leonardo di Caprio's Inception movie. Expand

Expand

In a lot of ways, its Iron Man with magic. A good, solid Marvel movie, but really a bit generic when I think about it. Some great visuals that lose luster on the small screen. Worth a watch if you like Marvel.

That addition, as you can see by the rating I've given is not a one of high praise, or of utter disgust, but rather more something in the middle. Doctor Strange is by no means a bad film, but it falls into that quickly done "Hero's Journey" story we all seen tine and again. That doesn't make it bad or anything mind, but predictable, plus there's something to be said about the fact that the final third act is basically fight after fight with little to no story involved. The plights some of the characters go through are hard to believe, Strange's story is one we've seen a thousand times before, just going off of basic stereotypes we've all gotten pretty tired of and the plot is easy to figure out, making it feel less impactful than it should. Sure, the ending is smart, and that on top of Cumberbatch's performance are what lead me to give the film a six, but it's a clear sign that the MCU needs to do more to try and keep fans of the comics, and fans of the film pleased, but don't quite know how. I don't hate this film, I don't love it, and that's the problem, because I used to love everything that MCU was despite my love of the comics, and this was just okay, and so has every MCU film been since. Let's hope Infinity War can fix the issues and somewhat stagnant feeling brought on by recent works, and really reinvigorate the film franchise the way the first film did, because right now, I don't feel the hype for the upcoming films that I used to, and I miss it. I didn't have high expectations and that really helped me love this film. Benedict Cumberbatch is the perfect Doctor Strange and I am glad Marvel keeps getting all this massive talent for their movies. Visually, it is probably the best MCU movie up to this point. The 'magic' effects are beautiful, the greenscreen work is superb. It is Marvel, so the film is also really funny and we all know Cumberbatch nails comedic characters with an a-hole attitude. Unfortunately, even this movie does not get rid of a long-existing flaw in most MCU films, the weak villains. While Mats Mikkelsen is a great actor, he doesn't really feel threatening or scary. He is just... evil. All in all this movie is pretty darn good and I will definetly rewatch it multiple times. P.S.: This movie has one of the best post-credit scenes ever. Definetely wait for it. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I didn’t want to like Doctor Strange, mostly because Benedict Cumberbatch had gotten so popular that I couldn’t stand him. He had reached the point of oversaturation, like some baritone-voiced coffee that had spilled over and completely overwhelmed the one meager napkin you had.

And then I watched it. And goddammit, Cumberbatch was great. I remembered why he had gotten so outrageously popular: the man is charismatic.

I had similar feelings about Marvel movies as a whole. I had loved them initially, buying over-priced tshirts at Hot Topic and arguing with friends over who the best Avenger was. (It’s Ironman, don’t @ me.) And then the movies kept coming. That isn’t to say that I didn’t like them, rather, I liked them too much. They were doing too well, and I was getting suspicious. Surely, there should have been a flop by now. Did they sign contracts in tandem with the devil?

And then they decided to do Doctor Strange. It had Actual Magic, not just the techno-magic that they hand-waved away in Thor. Was this the flop? Would their arcane ability to consistently produce quality movies finally fail?

Nope! It was great. The plot is straightforward enough. **** gets his comeuppance and becomes a better person, while making funny jokes. Sorry, that’s Ironman. Doctor Strange follows Stephan Strange, a brilliant surgeon, as he loses his ability to use his hands and gains the ability to magically alter reality. Along the way, he learns to be compassionate and selfless, and also how to be a badass and fight evil people.

The movie is goddamned spectacle. Magic scatters in glowing yellow geometric shapes from character’s hands and entire cities fold on themselves as the characters fight over the fracturing landscape. There was a mesmerizing scene where lightning cracked over the sky for three minutes as time slowed down. In a scene earlier, the Ancient One basically destroys Strange’s entire worldview via astral projection. He spins out into the universe and hands grow from his hands grow from his hands. Inspiration was drawn from tessellations, which, good job movie! You made a great choice. My eyes enjoyed your decision.

A not so quick aside about the whitewashing issue: Marvel as a whole has a problem with white-washing characters, and that definitely popped up here. Tilda Swinton was cast as the Ancient One, a character who was traditionally a Tibetan man. The producers explained it away, saying the character was already a racist stereotype, and that casting a Tibetan actor would hurt them financially in China. While I understand their reasoning, I still think they made the wrong decision. In the movie, the Ancient One was explained to be more of a title than a name, implying that there could have previously been a Tibetan Ancient One. They could have kept the concept of that being a title, but also cast someone who was Asian, therefore eliminating the racist stereotypes of the original character, and being able to cast someone who would do well in China. They were already re-writing the character, so why not re-write the racist aspects, instead of just casting someone who is white instead? I think the movie would have been better if they had done that instead, as the whitewashing is a very dark stain on an otherwise enjoyable movie. Doctor Strange also faceplanted over a rock that most Marvel movies do. The villains were kinda boring. There was our big evil boy, eldritch attempt Dormammu, who rules the Dark Dimension and is mostly just a giant head ribbed for his and her pleasure who hates clocks. But while he is literally the largest, he’s not the main baddie our heroes fight. That honor goes to Kaecilius, one of Dormammu’s acolytes, who’s name spellcheck absolutely despises. He wants to summon Dormammu, even though it is an objectively terrible idea, mostly because he got upset at the Ancient One. I’m simplifying it a bit, but not much. He’s pretty emotionally and morally shallow. The scariest villains are the ones you relate to, and while I do occasionally smudge my mascara, I don’t ever see myself trying to summon an ancient being that would suspend all of humanity in an eternal hellscape. Ever.

But while Kaecilius himself and Big Daddy Dormammu weren’t the most compelling, the end of the movie was fun as hell. Most Marvel movies end with a sky beam of doom and then a lot of punching whereas Doctor Strange ended with sky reality breach of doom and a bunch of cool time crap. Strange is brilliant, and the movie remembers that, which is always reassuring.

While most the plot can be kinda paint by numbers, and the reoccurring issue of whitewashing is crappy, Marvel does know how to make a fun movie, especially when they’re given snarky ****s. The quippy dialogue combined with the spectacular effects does make for great popcorn fare. It doesn’t really hold up against deeper analysis like I would hope a multidimensional movie might, but honestly, it’s not supposed to.

What you are given is aDoctor Strange, directed by Scott Derrickson, is not only the fourteenth installment in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, but a film that brings in a whole new perspective of magic and sorcery in the franchise. What you are given is a spectacular tale of a man who defies all odds, to learn the art and craft of magic, who is magnificently played by the great Benedict Cumberbatch. Other than Benedict, the film boasts a stellar cast with the likes of Mads Mikkelsen, Tilda Swinton, Rachael McAdams and Chiwetel Ejiofor, who all play their parts great as well. Accompanied by top-quality visuals, interesting origin stories and one of most fascinating music scores in Marvel history, you are giving one of the better Marvel films in recent memory.

With 2016 slowly drawing to a close, the year of movies hasn't been the most satisfying as major blockbusters haven't been able to reach the heights we wished they would. I have been slightly disappointed with what has come out so far this year, with the likes of Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, X-Men Apocalypse and Jason Bourne failing to live up to the hype. I believe Doctor Strange is up there with some of the best this year, which include Captain America: Civl War, Finding Dory, Zootopia, Deadpool and the Jungle Book. Not only do the visuals take your mind away, but it shows that Marvel still has what it takes to make good films (especially with so many superhero movies coming out in the next couple of years). It also proves that Marvel is capable of placing unknown directors with big blockbuster movies, like what they did with James Gunn in Guardians of the Galaxy and Scott Derrickson with this movie. It also sets up the character well for future movies as Benedict has confirmed he will take part in Avengers: Infinity Wars and possibly other Marvel movies.

If I were to make one criticism for the movie, it'll have to be the overuse and forcefulness of humor, especially when the movie started to get more serious. But, it did make the audience laugh in some moments, so it isn't much of a concern. To finish off, we are taken on a visually impressive journey throughout Doctor Strange's world and how he prepares to enter the Marvel Cinematic Universe in a big way.

It's almost as if Marvel is setting Strange upDoctor Strange is very similar to the original Iron Man. Tony Stark's flaws and overall snarky personality are just like Strange's, so the trajectory of their character arcs are about the same. It's almost as if Marvel is setting Strange up to be Stark's replacement once Robert Downey Jr. leaves the franchise. That said, this is still a good movie.

Director Scott Derrickson beautifully brings the MCU into the realm of magic and mysticism, which helps set the movie apart from Iron Man, and add flavor to the typical Marvel formula. The visuals here are crazy and mind-bending, but the cast effortlessly makes the audience feel at home in the weirdness.

Benedict Cumberbatch plays the snarky jerk almost too well. Tilda Swinton is electric and strange. She has an extraterrestrial quality about her that makes her fascinating to watch. Mads Mikkelsen isn't given a ton to do as the villain of the piece, but he's Mads Mikkelsen, so he totally sells the role anyway. He's surprisingly funny in this.

There's enough great stuff going on in Doctor Strange that makes it pretty easy to forgive its relatively formulaic approach to the superhero origin story, including great performances, awesome visuals, impressively constructed set pieces, and a finale that feels refreshingly small, even with its large-scale implications. I can very easily recommend this one to you.

sorry but I was greatly dissapointed of this movie - the script is flat and predictable. Yes, the special effects are great but annoyingly overblown .. I don't hink this movie deserves any rating more then 6.5 - 7 .. so I give it a 6

Simply brilliant! The special effects is crazy good! I was captivated from start to end. Much better than expected. Love the acting by the male lead, the head sorceress and the scary-cat lady doctor.

I'm specifically referring to certain actors who are better than this and who should know better; Tilda Swindon, Benedict Cumberbatch, Chiwetel Ejiofor, Mads Mikkelsen, Rachel McAdams & Benedict Wong. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. There were moments where it was interesting, but there was no real ending, or fight worthy of a marvel comic movie, and with no real enemy to fight that could match wits with DR Strange, the whole thing felt single sided in DR Strange's favor, his attitude is I don't know what I'm doing then out of nowhere hes all like, nothing can touch me I only just got this cloak LoL...I feel you could eliminate the hollow love interest in this movie, Strange barely is in contact with her, and he shunned her out for a long time thats interesting but not pivotal to the main plot, and of course there are lots of matrix like effects in this movie that look okay, That reminds me of The "I'm here to bargain moment" ugh the lazy writing, and cost cutting, why repeat the same scene over and over again, I honestly felt this was more to annoy the viewer then door-mom-moo LoL, I wish he had a real villain, this is a kinda stupid plot a generic monk with guy-liner... We know little about this monk and his motives, in the movie we get 1 or 2 moments vary rush-revealing them and nothing else, I can empathize with villains like the joker in batman, or doctor Octavius from Spider man then this generic monk, and I don't understand the comments made in the movie about DR Strange being an arrogant doctor/person in the movie [no matter what you think or say, Hugh lorry is a million times more arrogant lol]... Strange is not arrogant, this is a paper thin statement thats presented to the viewer, there is vary little to asses this as factual in the movie,I think more development on that would make the statement less hollow, honestly he sounds like a guy that wants to do the right thing and save lives as a doctor... he kinda reminds me of Richard Kimball from the movie the Fugitive. I have not read the comics but I might like them better then this movie. Expand

ItDoctor Strange: I hate going to the movie theater nowadays. It isn't that the experience is so much worse than it was back in the good old days when men were men, children were well behaved and people dressed for going out in public. It simply is that my home theater experience is gotten so much better. Surround sound, my own snacks, my own choice of company and a decent 4k OLED screen make for a mighty fine home viewing experience. Sometimes though a movie comes out that makes we wish I had seen it in the theater. Doctor Strange is one such movie. The special effects and design are so wonderfully trippy. The story is your standard origin story with the put-upon love interest (an underused Rachel McAdams), A cocky self-assured millionaire learning a life lesson, and even a touch of ye olde chosen one. It’s all the other wonderful stuff that makes the movie. Director Scott Derrickson isn’t afraid to let his imagination run wild everything from acid trips to body horror to Inception called and they want their movie back is featured.

While this movie is not peak Marvel it is better than it had to be and certainly better than it could have been. A fun visually impressive well acted movie.

One with spells, mystical teachers, and endless magical possibilities. This movie alone opens up so many possibilities and potential directions for the future of the MCU, while simultaneously increasing it's scale and depth of lore.

On one hand it seems kind of hypocritical for critics to embrace this movie so strongly given how they so often bash the average special-effects driven fantasy movie. On the other hand they usually don't have the heart, humor, and strong characters of Doctor Strange. The quality expected from of an MCU movie is on full display here.

The visuals are a huge part of the experience. The movie is almost constantly showing off bright, trippy visuals. There are so many moments of mind-bending onscreen sorcery and several scenes of beautiful anti-destruction that's quite unlike anything I've ever seen before.

It's also a very funny movie. The humor is on point and feels natural to the experience. All of the characters, supporting or otherwise, are well-written. Even the villains have solid motivations, even if they end up being just as disposable and ultimately non-threatening as every other MCU villain thus far. Marvel delivers one of their best standalone movies yet. One that feels different from anything else they've done thus far. It's a shame to see it fail at things like a truly compelling villain or romance yet again, but when it comes to action, humor, characters, and all around excitement, the movie is another success.

The story follows are title character trying to recover from an accident that has left him with serious nerve damage in his hands. Yes because the king of a place the dark dimension is totally trustworthy! All characters in this movie are underdeveloped and come off one dimensional. With the exception of our title character of course. But they don't really give us a reason to like him. Finally the way our protagonist beats our the big bad just seems lazy.

There isn't a single actor in this movie that doesn't hit it out of the park, just great performances all-round. Excellent special effects that actually gave me a slight bout of vertigo even without 3D goggles! A great story with high (and believable) stakes. A villain that is both a great actor and has a believable motive: I found myself sympathising entirely with his approach to the "problem" (minor theme spoiler: avoiding death).

Doctor Strange manages to compress an exciting origin story into two hours with tons of character development flawlessly, all the while ending with a nice humorous little connection to the MCU's other superheroes.

When a science person was the chosen one in the spiritual world!

You would have not expected it from this director if you had seen his previous films. This was based on the Marvel comics that I haven't touched. So basically I had high expectation to witness another side of Marvel universe with another set of (super)heroes. And surprisingly, it was very entertaining, nothing like other Marvel's heroes/story, except the possession of superpower to fight evil forces.

Firstly, Benedict Cumberbatch in the lead in a Marvel film, I did not think it would work. All I knew is he was a great sidekick, but that image has changed here. He was wonderful, definitely I'll be looking forward to its sequel as they had confirmed at the end. The theme wise, it is similar to most of the superhero tales, but some new concepts were added to it, I mean the superpower and that's what made it so unique.

Just like 'Thor', this film as well had taken the spiritual believes only for the basic platform. The rest of the developments are the clear mix of fantasy (illusion) and science. So it means the film is for theists and atheists. I am one of those who did not like 'Inception', which I think an ordinary action film with multiple layers. But this one was so awesome and it is for the people like me who think 'Inception' failed.

Visually spectacular. I regret missing it out in digital 3D. Its Academy Awards nominee in the category of Best VFX tells the story. There will be a tough contest, even I'm up for 'Jungle Book', but I won't be sad if this wins. The success story of Marvel continues. Not everybody reads comic books, but film goers are the majority. So adaptations like this are people like me. Let them keep coming, I love this format better. This film is not just for the youngsters, but old, families, as well as kids can enjoy, so I hope you won't miss it.

That and the fresh concept wich to be honest is possibly my favourite side of the whole universe, the amazing and sometimes trippy visuals, and the great portray of these characters, produce what i now consider one of my favourites on Marvel´s lineup.

This "freshness" is also a great way to forget and ultimately forgive, certain flaws wich may or may not be originated from the fact that the movie still moves on the rails of a familiar formula we have seen in other MCU movies, wich doesnt let the movie go all out on the wierdness that is Doctor Strange and results on not so perfect character development who for the most part is handled preety well to the point where i was actually caught by surprise by the arc of one of them, but still feels a bit rushed particularly the villain and Strange himself, Also the need to write jokes every five minutes makes it so that some end up falling on their faces and actually end up taking away from more dramatic moments.

In conclusion a great fun ride that is definitely worth a look even if you are at this point like me on superhero fatigue mode, lets just hope theres less Beyonce in the next one.

Final Score: 7 sheets of acid out of 10

Doctor Strange would have most likely earned a solid 7 from me, if it weren't for the breath-taking visual effects.

Characters: One problem I had with Dr. Strange's character is that we never really get to sympathize for him. He starts out as a jerk (a rather charming jerk that is, since he is portrayed by Cumberbatch) and suddenly becomes a relatively good person within a few scenes. There wasn't even a real scene where Strange has a breakthrough moment and suddenly masters sorcery, he just kind of masters it somewhat off camera. Rachel McAdams' character was underwritten and basically just there for some love interest since they needed one. Otherwise, the characters are as good as most Marvel superheroes are; just good, not amazing or completely original or anything.

Acting: Benny Batch was a great pick for Dr. Strange, but they might as well have just let him keep his British accent. His American accent still needs some tweaking, though it is a major improvement from Black Mass. He over-enunciates a few words like "New yORk", and it took a little time to adjust to his throaty American accent because I've matched his voice and accent with his face for so long. McAdams didn't really do anything, but she was fine for what she did do. Chewy Ejiofor and Tilda Swinton were also very good.

Plot: It's basically a basic Marvel plot. Blah blah, some bad thing happens and now they need to heal and accidentally get a new superpower, whoops now he has to save the world, and yay he saves it in the end against all odds. But once you look past the predictable plot, the movie is enjoyable and fun.

Humor: Lots of the humor fell flat in this movie, but there are a few scenes here and there that can generate a good laugh.

Action: The action is very well done, among some of the best Marvel fight scenes I've ever seen.

Effects: The effects have got to be some of the best I've seen in a while. How they managed to generate mind-bending effects that aren't headache-inducing I have no idea. I understand that it must have taken days if not months to make the animations and everything, but there were really only about two full scenes that used these amazing effects to their fullest. I would've liked more scenes like the two, but I do respect the time it most likely took just to make those two scenes.

Overall, I would recommend Doctor Strange, as it is a fun, enjoyable movie. I was anticipating a bit more action, and left the theater wanting a bit more considering how well-done the fight scenes were. It's a very Marvel movie that doesn't break the basic Marvel formula, but is still enjoyable in the end.

This is an incredibly cheesy fantasy movie that gets a pass because it's from Marvel.
The first scene had me laughing out loud at the wizards in bad costumes running through modern-day London. At least Harry Potter had the sense to tone down the pointy hats and robes. The costumes blend in during the temple scenes, but Strange's iconic outfit and hair still looks silly.

The plotholes are really too many to count. You can turn back time to save X, but not Y. Strange is a novice getting lucky in a fight for ten minutes, while a pro is dead in seconds. Then said novice is fighting for the planet fifteen minutes later and doing exceptionally well. People walk on walls to attack him, well, just because they can, I suppose. Strange's friends show up to help in seconds... or sometimes they arrive after everything has gone wrong.

The romance subplot is forced. His love interest starts out as someone for the doctor to talk to, and instead of being left behind as the story enters a fantasy realm, is the only on-call surgeon in all of New York City, which Strange conveniently finds himself returning to over and over. She's then relegated to gags where she's surprised at his superpowers.

Cumberbatch's American accent is cringe-inducing. I see no reason why they couldn't just let the character be English. The sequel setups and hamfisted mentions of other Marvel movie characters will also make you wince.

A plethora of CGI scenes seem more useful in describing an acid trip than serving any real use for the movie. They drag on just like the glut of fight scenes against faceless warriors with no lines and identical outfits. Even the main villain gets no more backstory than "disciple who lost his way." The monstrous force he's summoning? Well it likes eating planets, and hungers particularly for Earth. Why? Well that's not important right now. Maybe I'm being nostalgic, but even the 2007 animated movie handled the story better than this. The saddest part is the movie's attempts at humor. Sometimes it works - Strange's sight gag of lifting library books was a great scene - but most of the jokes seem like the work of a Disney Channel writers' room. When they get something that might be worth a chuckle, they run it straight into the ground.

The movie wasn't great, but it had the occasional bright spot, and it wasn't boring enough to shut off.

Benedict Cumberbatch takes on the titular role with little difficulty, resulting from a cocky doctor on the rise to a man who has lost everything he deems important to him. The big aspect of the film, its visual splendor, is used just in that way, making the 3D a feast for the eyes. The story and humor are on point as usual from one of the biggest brands in the world. Though it's the characters that really sell this film, with the controversial Tilda Swindon's Ancient One stealing the show from Cumberbatch many times. The film only falters in the character usage of a couple of its cast, most notable Rachel Adams playing Cumberbatch'a love interest, and does lose points for the obvious parallels between its story and that of Marvel's Iron Man. The film, however, ranks to be one of Marvel's best pictures, with a interesting and humorous story, wonderful characters, and some of the best visual effects of 2016. Expand

The movie was Ok. Love Marvel and the character was a comic book hero I had as a child. A tad OTT thus the score but it was still a good film. Well portrayed and well made...just went too far unfortunately but still worth watching.

Cumberbatch proves once again that he’s one of a kind. He’s capable to act many different kinds of characters. Dr. Stephen Strange got this ego-centric, Iron man-ish personality. We follow his up and downs throughout the film and there are a lot of development going on! Characters are well presented and the chemistry is superb. Antagonist is however a bit cliche-ish -- some inside does exist but not enough to be considered a complex nor rememberable villain. The basic premise of 'Dr Strange' is not as wow as what I expected to see. Some of you will without any doubt love it -- but I didn’t find this ”imaginary land-ish” film that dramatic. It’s a very bright and colorful film for sure, but I wanted even more to the plot and to the characters. A movie is suposed to be driven by the characters alone -- not the plot. But it’s still a fun and enjoyable film; the humor worked at multiple places even though I wanted more, and some of the jokes did come off as bad. Action is a plus; even though more uniqueness would have given it more praise on a personal level. This is a pure film of imagination. It’s action driven, funny, well directed and superbly acted. Still it’s nothing really wow if you ask me. But it’s one more great Marvel film to put on the shelf.

Perfectly enjoyable fun. Sound familiar? Doctor Strange being a

conventional plotting.

There's a much more interesting film in here, one in which Mads
Mikkelsen isn't the main villain (yet) and getting in the way of the
hero's journey and in which Tilda Swinton is even more ambiguous. Her obvious parallels to Stephen are perfectly apt and yet not allowed enough time to breathe and spin. It's all a last minute reveal and then a call to arms because plot and all is well because plot.

A lot has been made of the "trippy" special effects, and I guess they
are compared to the traditional visuals employed in these types of
movies. But let's not get carried away. Besides the travels through
space and mind it's mostly buildings moving around like they're in
Inception.

I didn't buy the last end credits scene. Useless and not earned. I'm
sick of hero's with photographic memories. Let the hero be exceptional on their own merits. Action scenes could be less choppily edited. But still, it's fun in ways other recent Marvel movies haven't been.

But in comparison to other ones, the villain is not interesting at all, and the conflict in general is not very exciting, and I wanted to find more about Strange, Wong, or just the objects in the safe houses than seeing the next scene in the conflict. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. About Dr.Strange, I would like to quote what my late (Imaginary) mentor said about Angelina Jolie’s Salt back in 2010 “This movie has holes in it big enough to drive the whole movie through. The laws of physics seem to be suspended here the same way as in a Road Runner cartoon”.

But is it a good film, we will establish that first we need to look into the matter if “Dr. Strange was rip off, of Christopher Nolan’s movies”
Throughout the movie, characters, special effects and plot was shouting Nolan’s name because it was strikingly very much similar to at least 3 of his movies.
1. Batman Begins
A rich guy goes to Himalayas then comes back enriched with new deathly set of skills/arts with a new persona, does that rings a bell? And the whole texture of the screen, clouds, darker colors, soul shaking crush on a friend who is taking her job very seriously.
There is another tiny bit resemblance, which might the homage to longer twist in batman. Initially Ras’ul Akh’s identity is mistaken by Bruce. So is done by Strange with ancient one.
2. Inception
Now that’s what everyone is talking about the physics defying scenes of inception have been stretched out. Also worth mentioning are those Hallway/Lobby scenes from Inception where no CGI was used and in Dr. Strange it’s all about CGI with excessive artwork and too much goes on too quick that it loses it’s charm. Apart from the visual similarities, the ending of Dr. Strange has huge influence from Inception where characters might get trap in the deepest of the memories for ever. In Dr. Strange it also takes inspiration for ending from another of Nolan’s movie.
3. Interstellar
We travel in alternate dimensions many times in Dr. Strange but do we remember our travels through wormholes? Of course there had been worm holes in movies since decades but we got familiar to the term after Interstellar but the design of wormholes and the fact that it takes you inside a black hole instead of future or past is impact of Interstellar. Dormammu (as funny as it sounds, especially from Bennedict’s mouth) is a fantasized version of a black hole trying to take over the earth. As explained earlier, ending is also inspired by Interstellar where key to save the world lies within a black hole and Hero has to go into it. Ancient One’s character is hugely inspired by Professor Brand from Interstellar as they both introduce the lead character to the object of the plot near the end shown to have kept secret to themselves.
Beside Nolan’s massive impact on the movie, there are other influences which are quite visible. Kaecilius sidekicks were much like characters from Thor, I would not be much surprised to know that they were using same costume, considering the fact that they will share the Marvel universe soon will make it cost effective for producers. It seems like Bennedict is the guy to play role of photographic memory as it’s his 3rd role after Sherlock Holmes in Sherlock and Alan Turning in The Imitation Games. Although Bennedict is brilliant actor but if you are playing similar role again and again it might not be that much entertaining. His role of Alan Turning was different but playing Dr. Strange is very much similar to Playing Khan in Star Trek Into Darkness. Tilda Swinton is brilliant and the only person who fits into the role and does justification to it. Swinton brings charisma with her personality, mild British accent and ability to look stunning with bald head. It’s a shame her character met its destiny, as it could have brought interesting background in upcoming movies. Rest of the cast were not given much chance to prove anything.
Story is not that different from any action or superhero movie ever made. With lose ends like the death of Ancient One (who only has aliases and not funny name), accident of Strange over shoreline, the object to control time was just laid around and the fact how strange manage to successfully maneuver the feat at first attempt, how skull of ancient one was still intact after falling from height of hundreds of feet. And the strategic scheduling of the movie right after Captain America Civil War, where it introduces mirror reality concept. So now all the dirty fight can take place in mirror universe while real one remains intact saving Avengers from future lawsuits. Overall Dr. Strange is enjoyable, especially for its opening sequence and special effects. But again it’s more of form over no substance.

He is as egocentric as any politician, yet as clever at his job as any detective. The well-acclaimed British actor Benedict Cumberbatch (The Imitation Game, Sherlock) takes the stage in the Marvel Cinematic Universe to depict one of the cleverest caped crusaders within the franchise. He is certainly a delight as always, but it’s the unusual approach to Doctor Strange that may either paralyze you with amazement or scare you away.

His life at this point is pretty normal: go to work, save a life, have a fight with his nagging coworker/girlfriend played by Academy Award nominee Rachel McAdams (Midnight in Paris, Spotlight), cherry pick the patients he wishes to save, and gloat about the spectacular perfection that is his life. That is, until an uncalled for car crash leaves his hands paralyzed with severe nerve damage.

…Which leads him to Nepal, where an Ancient One is said to be there with knowledge of spiritual healing. It’s not in his comfort zone but hey? What has he got to lose?

So he goes under spiritual training by a cult, receiving far more than he bargained for. Next thing he knows, he is dawned with the abilities to remove his spirit from his material body, create portals in midair, and fly with the powers of a levitating cape, and all in an effort to save the world from an outer demon.

My biggest problem with this highly entertaining (and funny) addition to the MCU is its swaying away from the familiar gadgets and aliens of the previous films and more into an out-of-place exploration of man’s relationship with the occult. It’s not odd to say, especially considering that they do not do a very good job at portraying it.

Normally, if there was a cult such as this one who depend on old spiritual tradition, why are they of all different races around the world? We have one White woman, one Black man, and one Asian, and several others who are from places I cannot possibly pinpoint. It may not matter to you, but this really hurts the film’s believability.

Although I do give director Scott Derrickson (The Exorcism of Emily Rose) credit for telling the story as if it were a real Buddhist or Hindu legend, while at the same time a part of our own modern culture. He does this best through the most obvious yet brilliantly executed way of combining the two: colorful trips through the spiritual universe that wows you off guard, especially when viewed behind 3-D glasses. While not in the infinite realms of the nonmaterialistic universe, Dr. Strange and his comrades fight against the assassins of time and space through showcases of city environments spinning and losing form within itself, as if you’re watching Inception though a kaleidoscope.

Older traditions of Hindu training are also exploited here in the same fashion done by The Matrix: Dr. Strange is thrown to the top of Mt. Everest to test how quickly he can form a portal back to base. It would generate shrieks of joy from all anime fans, but it later turns out to be a missed chance of character development, which leads into this film’s biggest problem…

With something as controversial and delicate as occult practices driving the Marvel Cinematic Universe, I doubt there could be a reasonable way to do something like this under Marvel’s wing perfectly. I do appreciate the risks that they have been taking to be different with each of their films (just compare and contrast Guardians of the Galaxy with Captain America: Civil War for a minute). But frankly, some risks are not worth taking. It was worth it to create the mind-bending kaleidoscopic fight sequences, but when Marvel’s name is attached, I do not believe that it would help with their branding.

You know, the kind where a rich and egotistical neurosurgeon ends up losing his ability to use his handsWhen I first sat down to watch Doctor Strange in theaters this past weekend, I figured it would be just like every other Marvel movie. You know, the kind where a rich and egotistical neurosurgeon ends up losing his ability to use his hands properly. He then goes on to be humbled and saved by science because that’s all he believes in. Oh wait, yes, that is what happened. Well, not exactly. In fact, I was pleasantly surprised to see some aspects of Christianity within this movie. Doctor Strange is a close representation of the cultural differences between secularists and Christians in the world today. Strange is your typical materialist, where he believes that science can solve any question of the universe. If science cannot prove it, it simply is not possible in this world. Yet, during the movie, the viewer witnesses Strange’s slow acceptance of a power greater than science. When he first arrives in Nepal, Strange goes searching for the Ancient One who can heal his hands. The Ancient One, in my opinion, is a media-glorified version of God. She is a living mash-up of religious traditions and ideas that emphasize spiritual warfare. The Ancient One mentors Strange in the matters of spirit, preaching that he needs to reorient his beliefs. The Ancient One argues that only the spirit can better heal a person. Strange needs to let go of everything he thought was true and instead rely on faith. This movie, I believe, is a classic redemption story where Strange recognizes there is a power greater than himself and then becomes the “savior of mankind” against the supernatural evil who seduced humans with the lie of a promise of eternal life. The one criticism I have is of Strange being the savior, because no true human man has the ability or power to save the entire world from sin. However, I applaud Marvel for finally allowing faith to be a source of power rather than science, technology, or alien ability. Expand

The story is interesting but it could definitely be developed more as a tv show making characters more engaging, as film, it felt rushed and as a missed oportunity that doesn't deserve a second watch.
The visual effects are superb, the music in the other hand, as other in the Marvel Universe, is uninspiring and generic.

What bothered me the most was the wasted oportunity of having great actors and not give their characters a correct development, specially Mads Mikkelsen.

Dr. Stephen Strange is initially narcissistic and arrogant; traits similar to other Marvel cinematic heroes like Iron Man. However, Benedict Cumberbatch's performance is subtle and engaging. He is a deeply flawed hero, but an engaging one nonetheless. What I most enjoyed about this film is its attention to Strange's character and his journey to understand more about the world. The effects were also visually interesting and I felt they connected to the themes of spirituality and resourcefulness present in the main character. Though this is technically an origins film, it defies typical norms found in usual movies of the same degree, and tense action meets satisfying drama in this astounding cinematic debut. Expand

The decade old formula of these Marvel movies is starting to wear a little thin these days to be honest but it's hard to deny that Doctor Strange does still makes for an entertaining couple of hours for Super Hero fans. Some of the scenes, such as the one where everything around the protagonists is moving backwards in time, are absolutely spectacular and there is as ever plenty of comical and light hearted moments. Fortunately for Marvel, DC's depression-laced Batman v Superman and **** Suicide Squad still surpass it, as well as Fox's Deadpool, which is more akin to an abortion than a true film. Yet, Doctor Strange, an LSD infused piece of Marvel filmmaking makes a case for being just as bad through its own unique route. While Batman v Superman was overdone with too much going on, Suicide Squad was horrifically edited, and Deadpool was so edgy it cut its neck open, Doctor Strange is undone via quips. Even worse, it adds the classic horrible Marvel villain and simplistic plotting to the equation for one hell of a concoction. Fortunately, solid special effects and religious symbolism - which I am a sucker for - really do help the movie out.

Firstly, I will focus on the positives. The religious symbolism is a real soft spot for me and Doctor Strange demonstrates why. Adding any symbolism really adds an extra dimension to a film and the fact it is present at all truly warms my heart. Even better, the religion aspect truly works. From the plotting to the characterization, it all connects in the end. Stephen Strange (Benedict Cumberbatch), a brilliant but self-obsessed surgeon, is in a car accident and loses the ability to perform surgery due to nerve damage in his hands. This loss of his hands devastates him, but is through his own sin: pride and greed. Spending freely and always worshiping at a shrine of himself, Strange commits two mortal sins, which is not a great start. Thus, he is humbled and brought to his knees, forced to search for another avenue. Admittedly, an awful person being redeemed through the meeting of others and finding a cause greater than himself is also typical, but greatly executed in Doctor Strange. On the other side, we have Kaecillius (Mads Mikkelsen). Though under-explored and horrifically written as all other Marvel villains, Kaecillius represents the complete opposite. Seeking immortality, he strikes a deal with Dormammu - who is the equivalent of the devil - that he will allow Dormammu to conquer the Earth in return for that immortality. Though warned that this deal he struck will only end with his suffering, Kaecillius was consumed by his own pride and greed, representing the opposite of Doctor Strange, who wound up rising above his own demons (the one great quote from this film: "We never lose our demons, we only learn to live above them," applies here).

Additionally, the special effects are quite solid. The dark dimension is terrifically crafted, while all of the spells are delightfully brought to life. Doctor Strange manages to suspend disbelief by creating a world that is both incredible to look at and thoroughly inventive. There are not many films with special effects akin to those in Doctor Strange, not even Inception. Though elements of Inception's effects can be seen here, Doctor Strange undeniably dials it up to 11 and sees what magic it can create. That said, there is one moment where the special effects were horrible. When Strange first meets with the Ancient One (Tilda Swinton) and she knocks him into some kind of warp, the effects of him leaving and returning to Earth are horrifically fake looking.

This leads terrifically into the negatives. Before diving into the "comedic" "relief", Doctor Strange has many other problems. The action being one of these issues. From a comically dumb battle between two people's "astral bodies" that poorly balances between absurd and intense to the final battle in which everything is fixed with a deus ex machina (hell, all of their powers are deus ex machina's), Doctor Strange exemplifies typical. Devoid of any invention beyond its mythology, the film is content to rest on the mystery of its characters powers to wow audiences, as well as how cool everything looks. Similarly to the problems that plagued Civil War, Marvel shows a willingness to simply include elements that look cool, instead of truly challenging its audience with ambitious action set pieces. Rather, it seeks to distract and disorient, in order to keep us from noticing that the film has nothing up its sleeves.

Character-wise, the film is typical Marvel nonsense. The villain is horribly crafted, except to create a parallel to Strange. The film goes to great lengths to showcase this parallel, in hopes that it will be satisfactory enough. Yet, it cloaks its villain in a veil of mystery and never let's us see what makes him tick. In many regards, Kaecilius is a greatly sympathetic villain, as he has been fooled by Satan into believing falsehoods. He deserves understanding, reverence, and sympathies, not destruction. Additionally, Christine Palmer (Rachel McAdams) is terribly written. The funniest joke told with the film came after its release from director Scott Derrickson.

It's visuals are in it's own league in the Marvel series. It loves to use the kaleidoscope/mirroring effect found in the original comic books, It's great they stay true to the comics and have it pay off so well. The story is interesting, It does a good job at explaining who strange is before he became who is his. The story is able to carry you through the movie without slowing down. The Action and visual effects is where this movie shines. Seeing the magical spells being cast and used in battle is an interesting change compared to Avengers and Civil War. It adds a different level and style to this film that not may other Marvel Films have.Doctor Strange is less heavy on the comic relief then usual but that is a nice change if you ask me.
Doctor Strange is all around great and enjoyable film and I highly suggest you see it in theaters.

Not block buster, but worth the time and money. It has a some 'didn't see that coming' moments. I wonder if a few lines were stolen from Serenity or if Mr. Whedon took liberties with the comic old comic book.
