It isn't a The thing about this movie is that it hold up a mirror to the human race, it is satire of the most blunt sort and will polarise opinions. The moment you make the effort to understand the deep message you will enjoy it. It isn't a comedy, it isn't a horror movie, there is a little romance and the action is more instrumental in making a point than to entertain. As another reviewer said. this movie doesn't offer cheap thrills, it grabs you by your eyeballs, makes you feel uneasy/ashamed and filters right down to your heart. It isn't for all audiences but it is a masterpiece of a movie, constantly evoking strong and heartfelt emotions and continually providing shocks. There's a lot to be taken from this movie, however it'snot the usual light-hearted fare. When compared to war of the worlds this movie really shines. They are similar movies but this doesn't get boring, it is taught, intense and thrilling. A bit less gore than war of the worlds but infinitely more human brutality and excellent 'movement' enhanced by the camera work and interview format of certain parts. Expand

Half-way through the movie that changed For once, a science fiction movie targeted to people who can *think* for themselves. It honestly gets to you when you least expect it. I felt like bitch-slapping the main character in the beginning. Half-way through the movie that changed into me being on the verge of tears from the guilt and shame I was feeling for what could have been actual human behavior were this true. And I was just about ready to yell and cheer (for the aliens, heh) in the end. Like another guy said, a movie that makes you root for the ugly-looking aliens that don't speak a word of English is a good movie indeed. To those of you who didn't like it, please take into consideration that this wasn't a movie meant to make you feel all nice and cozy about how "nice" and "good" humans are and how the good-looking hero will always save the day. That was actually what usually bugged me the most in most Hollywood blockbusters. The world is a pink-tinted fairy-tale where good guys never die (or if they do, they get showered with honor) and humans are the finest specimen of life. Pftt. I see that and raise you a District 9. That anyone could seriously such a wonderfully unique and sensory science-fiction masterpiece a "0" here is suspect and ridiculous. One of the best and most original films in years. It might be a bit much for dimwits to appreciate.

It's a standard anti-hero/redemption adventure story. (and occasionally funny if you have a certain sense of humor... I certainly laughed out loud) BUT, it is done extremely well. It is stylistically unique, and the sci-fi is solid. It far exceeds expectations of typical Holloywood sci-fi adventure and should rightfully take it's place in the top five or ten of all time. Films such as "I-Robot", "The War Of the Worlds" remake, even the 2009 rehash "Star Trek" lacked any social commentary and instead focused on action elements to keep viewers entertained. Now, District 9 has an new tone on science-fiction, an incredible film which is by far one of the best science fiction films in a long time. The plot is filled with commentary on the social climate of the twenty-first century. The aliens in District 9 represent the situation in countries throughout the world in which immigrants are arriving in large numbers fleeing from disaster or war. MNU, the agency which "takes care" of the aliens shows a picture of a government who does not care about the situation and wants to leave it for others to fix. Sharlto Copley is incredible as the film's lead and as he transforms into an alien he loses hope only to find hope in a father and son family of aliens. While the aliens are CGI effects they have personalities where in the film you forget that they are effects, but true characters. The remaining actors are well-done in their roles and the film's final shot is sad, yet at the same time, partially up-lifting. There were faults mostly in regards to the gore effects. While the effects themselves were good, the monotone film print made the effects even more disgusting, which is not a bad thing, yet is not a good thing at the same time, due to large amounts of gore throughout the film. In conclusion, District 9 is truly a well thought masterpiece of cinema and it's conclusion leaves this viewer wondering about a follow-up. Expand

However, the Director made one very large mistake. He began shooting scenes without script dialogue written. This led to Actors creating their own dialog and Sharlto misuse of the F word. Other than the dialog this movie is brilliant. Go see it. Expand

Once again, I left the theatre feeling bludgeoned to death and a bit starved for a story. The action, once it started, was eardrum-splitting and constant, while the story itself seemed to be based solely on the girth of the special effects budget. The love story between the transforming government worker and his wife was never believable for a moment. It was dull and listless. Also, the end shot of the fully transformed government worker making metal posies to leave on the doorstep of his wife was positively vomit-inducing. The villainy of the father-in-law also strained the realms of credibility. (Really? Not a shred of conflict working within while you sit next to your daughter and lie like a bureaucrat?) I did buy the moment the one government official gave his approval to the mad scientist to start hacking up the transforming government worker - that rang with great clarity. I only wish the mad scientist had gotten to complete the task. That would have been interesting. Overall, the human relations in this movie were not-so-much one dimensional as they were gaseous. On the other hand, the relationship between the father and son alien scored with me. In fact, if it were not for the child alien, this film would have been unwatchable. I loved the premise. Ideologically there was so much to work with, so much to ponder and explore. Unfortunately, with all those guns going off, who had time to think? (Obviously not the screen writers.) The back-story was far more interesting than the plotted present. They should have filmed the back-story. Expand

Don't wait for DVD or rip it off some torrent website, go see it in theaters. District 9 is a smart, occasionally funny, action thriller, easily the best of '09. The story is told from Wikus, who's closer to an average person than most action thrillers, as he has major flaws (such as marrying up to get a promotion "unexpectedly", selfish but an honest worker) who gets caught up in the midst of a conflict when he absent mindedly fools around with a canister, which roller coasters into fights that include but not limited to; Mechs, nasty as hell alien weaponry, Military vs Gang war, lots of blood and more. The fight scenes are well done, without the lens flares and ADHD camera handling. Even the stuff between the action is interesting, as it shows Wikus's life shattering and morphing before him as well as other life changing scenes for him and those around him. I'm trying not to spoil much of it, and I wish I could, because it's just a great movie worth telling about. Go see it damn you, and if you already did...well, do it again! Expand

The great failing of District 9 is not its actors, nor its directing (though it is questionable), but the terrible writing. The plot is far too full of holes for a movie that takes itself so seriously. I'm fine with accepting the premise that desperate aliens came to Earth, but everything that took place in the story after their arrival made no sense. The characters were simply cartoon cutouts--the only significant character who wasn't an inane plot device was the main protagonist, and even he was given short shrift by the screenplay. If you want some action, you'll find it, and it won't completely bore you. If you want to see a well thought-out story that actually affects more than your basest emotions, you will be disappointed.
