This movie is absolutely incredible, not only does it mix the idea of alien refugee's coming to a foreign world, but it also has a lot of content that relates to racial disputes during South Africa's apartheid.

Overall, kind of a dumb movie. Wasn't exciting.. wasn't compelling. Had good special effects, but all movies do nowadays. I wasn't impressed, but it was unlike any other movie I've seen.

It is here where District 9 fails. For despite the powerful images one can associate with apartheid, the absence of the allegory leaves a confused, poorly-plotted, and (let's face it) trite human story. And then it closes itself by shooting everything up. Expand

I lost my interest when the first image appeared on the screen. Such a bizarre concept that was just plain stupid. Nothing about it I could appreciate. Such a failure. Can't believe it was nominated for best picture.

The CG Aliens are flawless with smooth animations and perfect interaction with live-action characters. Any Sci-Fi fan should make it their business to see this movie. The cliche of a movie that makes you laugh, cry and smile has finally arrived. The funny bits and comic relief and even some of the violence will put a child - like smile on your face. The emotion brought up between the main character and his wife and an alien and his child will make you tear up, and the ending will bring a big old grin to your face. Every actor isn't a cliche and you have never seen on the big screen, however this does not make them bad actors, they are brilliant! Sharlto Coprey gives an amazing performance! As far as the aliens being cardboard cutouts, Anybody who hates this movie should go and learn a little about apartheid. Blacks in South Africa were treated this way, and had to endure such hardships, in concentration camp type settlements. As far as the aliens being cardboard cutouts, that is similar to what the blacks had to endure. They weren't allowed an identity, weren't listened to, and weren't allowed, in many cases. to even speak their own language. They were moved against their will if whites didn't want them in their neighbourhood. I think this movie nails that on the head without being too obvious about it. The lead actor was amazing. Consider that most of his roll and his lines were adlibbed before you criticize the writing. His transformation was incredibly and convincing, both in his character and his appearance. Fantastic movie! Expand

Joe, The Final Destination and Star Trek) i almost gave up on expecting a great summer film. But then out of nowhere came District 9. Not only is this the best film of the summer, its the best film of this year (so far). The acting of spot on, the computer effects were incredible and the action scene at the end blew me away and left me on the edge of my seat (although it did go on a bit long). It was really interesting and strangely moving to see this happy go lucky man turn into a monster by the end (by his actions, not appearance, i'm trying not to spoil anything) and it just shows that maybe the aliens aren't the real monsters on our planet. The reason i'm giving it a 9 was because after an amazing action sequence, the writers must have thought "crap, we have only 5 minutes to end the story" so the ending comes across as very very rushed. But the 110 minutes leading up to that is modern sci-fi at its finest. It just goes to show that you don't need a huge budget and a well know cast and crew to make an amazing film. It defines sci-fi, it defines movies. GO AND SEE THIS MOVIE. Expand

The last hour is nothing but shooting and yelling. I know some people enjoy that, but it doesn't make a smart or original film. Near the end, one of the characters (not to spoil anything) literally uses the phrase "Go on with out me." I feel like that pretty well encapsulates the movie's descent from total originality to painful cliche. As has been said many times before, the first I think it's a travesty people feel the need to give this movie 0's, when it was far more creative and interesting (certainly in the first 20 minutes anyway) than many movies this year. As has been said many times before, the first 20 minutes are incredibly strange but well carried off, and manages to bizarrely mix realism and comedy gold in a documentary format on aliens coming to Earth. Absolute gold there, and while the rest of the movie tends away from this style and becomes more serious in tone, it is a heart-wrenching and well-delivered sci-fi that is not an entirely brainless gorefest (though it does have some amazing effects on display - amazing considering the budget). I think simply the fact it is delivered in such an original way and qualifies as a sci-fi blockbuster as well as a thinking man's movie makes it a must-watch. Expand

If you are looking for a summer Blockbuster action film, this isn't it. It's gritty, violent, ruthless and coldblooded, just like much of our world. But like our world, it has redeeming qualities; goodness, hope and redemption. I can understand people wanting the plot wrapped up in a prettier package with a nice bow, but that's not this movie. It isn't perfect, there are some plot holes, but show me a movie or book that doesn't have plot holes. The plot is very original in it's execution. I can usually see where a story is going, to the point that I annoy people by figuring out what's going to happen all the time. I didn't know where this one was going. The film makers do not walk you through the movie holding your hand. It is not a guided tour. Don't expect to know everything, you won't. In this movie it works very, very well. What you don't know isn't necessary to understanding what's going on or why. It gives you something to discuss with others after the fact, but doesn't take away from the story at all. That aspect of the film makes it MORE fun to watch. For me. You decide for yourself. The CG was flawlessly integrated, which is so nice to see. They did an exquisite job. I got a good 45 minutes into the movie before I remembered that of course the aliens were CGI, but I never once was I visually jarred out of the film by blatant CGI. I would go so far as to say it is the best CGI mixed into real footage I have ever seen. Over all, worth seeing if darker stories are your thing. Think, BSG. Expand

I can see how one COULD walk out of the theater during the first maybe 20-30 minutes. I really could not tell you where it happened but somewhere I was drawn into the plot and fell in love with the characters and the originality. This movie is really hard to describe to anyone who has not seen it. The story comes together, the CGI is some of the best I have seen, and the plot is GREAT if you have a little understanding of what they are basing it on. I can not wait to see the sequel and I believe these people that gave it a 5/10 and 0/10 maybe just watched the first 20 min and gave up. I would have given it a 10/10 but no one is perfect besides Shawshank Redemption :) Expand

Are people really this dumb? This isn't a movie, it's a video game premise, and if they'd actually made a game instead of a film, they could possibly be excused for having just about enough plot to fill a dixie cup before moving on to simply blowing things up and splattering gore across the camera. First off, if you didn't get the fact that this movie is a thinly-veiled allegory for South African apartheid simply from the trailers, then you're either brain-dead, in which case please don't reproduce, or you're 10 years old, in which case please ask your parents about apartheid. Or better yet, Google it, because, by the glowing response this film's had so far, NOBODY REMEMBERS WHAT APARTHEID WAS. I've never had a metaphor so ham-handedly pounded over my head for two hours. Yes, I get it. This is man's capacity for evil and hatred and exploitation through ignorance and xenophobia. Please move on, or do something interesting with it. Instead, we get treated to a parade of 1-dimensional characters ("I just love watching you prawns die!") and joyfully pubescent violence porn. However, even the violence causes massive amounts of cognitive dissonance. If the aliens had these weapons all along, why were the humans able to subjugate them? They've got guns that MAKE PEOPLE EXPLODE. You don't even have to aim particularly well. Instead, the aliens decide to trade those weapons for cans of cat food and dig through trash piles so they can nibble on vulcanized rubber. Secondly, once the aliens (trying to avoid spoilers here, don't ask me why) do decide to unleash their weaponry after 20 years of sneering degradation and oppression, they are remarkably reticent about actually using it. Inside my head, I was constantly screaming, "WHY AREN'T YOU KILLING THEM!!?" The characters were that thin; the humans are SO terrible and the aliens are SO innocent and maltreated that there is absolutely no ambivalence about the idea that the aliens should exterminate every human that has anything to do with MNU, the cartoonishly evil corporation responsible for human/alien relations. Which brings up yet another disconnect; once the alien tech is unleashed, why are the human forces so unfazed by it? I understand that, as a soldier, you need to hang in there and keep fighting even when you start taking losses, but after you see one or two of your teammates explode into a bloody mist after getting hit by an electro-bolt, maybe it's time to start waving the white flag. I dunno...I guess I'm out of steam here. Maybe my expectations were too high. There was a lot of potential here; a good twist on a first contact story, and worthy subject matter to serve as a thematic canvas for that story. Unfortunately, Mr. Blomkamp and his cohorts were apparently more interested in playing a game of HALO. Expand

Furthermore, having Jackson's backing makes it that much better. But, I do have to feel like some of the overly-joyous press is a titch too strong. The film is at worst, a bit too long, and seems to struggle at keeping the story rolling at certain points. I didn't love it enough for a 10, but as a jump-start to a somewhat struggling sci-fi genre, a solid 8 is a good place to start. Expand
