There is nothing particularly wrong with it, but it fails to achieve what true Science Fiction aims to do; offer up a context for discussing a current issue with all the emotional baggage removed through fantastic characters and setting. While I get the aesthetic (which was well done, convincing and wonderfully cohesive), it still made me a little sick to my stomach. Some of the final plot "twists" if you can call them that, are a little obvious and seem out of place. However, the general concept of an alien refugee camp is genius, and in many respects the CG is some of the best I've ever seen simply because the focus remains the story and never the effect. Expand

Under apartheid, the native population of South Africa was guilty of only one thing, being black. On that basis alone, babies were born into a limited world without civil rights and shanty town life with their ill-fated parents. Having Under apartheid, the native population of South Africa was guilty of only one thing, being black. On that basis alone, babies were born into a limited world without civil rights and shanty town life with their ill-fated parents. Having committed no crime, such institutionalized disenfranchisement, without a doubt, was an injustice, which inspired Jerry Dammers of The Specials to give up ska and write the consciousness-raising anthem "Free Nelson Mandela". Do the oppressed aliens in "District 9" deserve their own anthem too? With a little more exposition, their sudden appearance in the Johannesburg sky would have made the allegory about racial segregation resonate with less opaqueness. The film never truly establishes the extra-terrestrials as affable inter-planetary travelers. When the moviegoer first meets them, they're not friendly, or hostile; they're sick. Instead of a cure for cancer, these aliens brought along an artillery of deadly weapons. (You know they're deadly when people cheer the blood.) The humans in Robert Wise's "The Day the Earth Stood Still" act with prejudice and can't see that Klaatu is making a peace offering. By contrast, the more we witness the awesome firepower that alien technology has to offer, the less these visitors seem like victims of pure, unadulterated hatred, so the allegorical evocations of apartheid fall apart, since their perceived innocence is up for interpretation. What if the aliens reached Earth, but called off the invasion due to illness. Due to sloppy writing, that scenario is a definite possibility. The government might have been right to incarcerate the aliens, but went too far when they tortured and conducted medical experiments on their bodies. "District 9" admirably blends spinach with your popcorn, but the Johannesberg setting is problematic. The spaceship should have hovered above Berlin, or Washington D.C. Expand

Strange looking aliens looking like Big Shrimp I reserve a 10 for a perfect movie but this is as close as it gets. This movie grabs you from the start and never lets go. It is a social commentary on everythng that is wrong with the world. Strange looking aliens looking like Big Shrimp are marooned over South Africa. Instead of realizing their superior intelligence and strength they are thrown into a run down compound for twenty years and treated like garbage. It is hard to believe that no one looked out for their interest or tried to find out why they had come here? Instead, it is no different than a NAZI concentration camp. It's obvious although never explained that we understand their language and they ours. They have superior weaponry but never use it against mankind. There is so much more that the audience wants to know but the answers are never revealed. It is not until a supervisor who had disdain for them has his DNA altered that he understands how awful we have been to these visitors to our planet. From there the framework has been set for the visitors to return, After all a promise is a promise. But when they return they may do so with a vengeance. Stay tuned as this is a guarantee for a sequel or two. Just go see it. Expand

The premise and concept are superbly Although this movie hasn't come out in the UK yet as of writing, I managed to find a way to see it (ssshhh) in decent enough quality. Needless to say, this film is definitely worth a cinema visit. The premise and concept are superbly realised and the main character (Wickers/Vickers?) is very likeable. The actor playing him brings a real naivity and bumbling foolery to the guy but he's so sweet and you really feel for him. The aliens are great, with the CGI really doing wonders in most cases. The story is good but a little in-cohesive on account of the 3 act set-up. I think I would have preferred the whole film to be a mockumentary like how it begins. In any case, each of the 3 acts work really well individually. The interaction between the humans and prawns seems fairly realistic and quite original to me. The action is superb and often very cool. It can be gory which I love but then you get body-horror elements which were revolting. I'd like to get more into the backstory and would welcome any spin-offs/sequels/prequels that may come. Go see this film and look out for Neil Blomkamp, the director. He's the next big thing but needs to improve the story-telling and character development issues but he can handle everything else better than most veteran filmmakers. Expand

He starts out as a tool, and by the end of the movie we see he has overcome his internal prejudism. The ending is beautifully subtle, even if it is incomplete. This movie NEEDS a sequel, just like Kill Bill vol. 1 did. Yet, it does stand alone as a perfectly viable work. It's disturbing how many people really didn't get it and, in fact, have a violent reaction to it. Could it be that these people all harbor a prejudism of their own? Expand

What could have been a classic of storytelling is reduced to a decent movie compared to this season's other examples of bad summer films, i.e.,Transformers 2. Too bad. Perhaps this is what audiences want; mind numbing audio and video that buries a truly interesting film beneath it. Do yourself a favor and watch the original 6 minute short 'Alive in Joburg' by director Neill Blomkamp and you will see in what direction the longer film should have gone into. The first 30 minutes of 'District 9' is astonishingly good, but then the film degenerates into a mindless entertainment that gives the viewer too much opportunity to think about the plot holes. But of course when the film flies past your eyes at light speed many viewers will forget to ask the important questions. I hope that the Director's Cut DVD will include the missing story. Expand

The movie throws you off balance immediately with a lead human character who can barely act. It was like trying to follow the dialogue in a Monty Python episode. I lot of stumbling. He was unlikable because the actual actor couldn't act. Then, we have the plot holes. As one reviewer put it, "you could drive a mother-ship through them." The aliens somehow had way better weapons than us, yet they chose to be treated the way they did. When push came to shove, they were violent, so don't give me some explanation about them being docile. This movie was better than a lot of the 2s and 3s being released lately, but they really threw this movie together. I wonder if the producers and directors get to see the entire movie and, after which, can make changes. Perhaps there's no time for it. If I were Jackson and i was able to watch the whole movie then make changes, I would have refilmes about half of the movie. They could have made a 10/10, but speed is more valuable than quality anymore. Expand

I read over a few reviews about story line and people questioning why things were the way they were, and the best way to explain why they didnt understand the movie is simple:They didnt pay any attention. I thought the movie was top notch. Main actor made since in acting how anyone would if they were trying to survive and were in a f-ed up situation. Plot was very original. The movie "if you paid attention" kept you very much into the the plot and the cg aliens looked like something different for a change than your typical alien. Little alien kid was cool, made you feel sorry for the little dude. The only thing I wouldnt recommend is that they resist making a sequel to it. Leave it how it is, the only way to make it bad is by trying to milk more money from it. Lastly with peoples issues with race in the movie, its the 21st century. Why dont we actually take a look at how things really are and notice it. Its just another very emotional trait that can be used in films that does make sense and that we can relate to. Expand

You can not miss out, I dont want to wreck the story but I will say, you will be suprised and please dont read the discription that is given by MetaCritic as it reveals to much, this is one of those movies like I am Legend which is kept hidden and you have to watch it yourself to find out what it is really about, you cant just watch the trailer. Back to the movie, it is very realistic, no over the top action, it has low budget and has followed in the footsteps of Lord of the Rings (excluding the music, well maybe because I didnt pay attention to the music, maybe I will like it if I watch the movie again). This movie is for people that like true movies, this is not for people that like chick flicks and never really think about the movie or go into details. They just want to watch it and... thats about it, they never appreciate it. But please dont listen to what I am saying, movies unlike games, can not be judges, every one will like something totally different. Games gets judged on things like how well the controls are, how many glitches there are, how fun it is to play, etc. But movies are judged on their story, every one likes a different story line and I NEVER listen to one of these stupid critics who think they are so great and every thing they say is right. If I see a movie that I think looks good, I will watch it. Thanks for reading :) Expand
