The result of an off-screen romance between its two leads is a lifeless thriller that is neither erotic nor exciting in any sense.

It only starts to show signs of life after the first 60 minutes and needless to say, by then I didn't care about anything else the story had to offer.

You can't possibly label your work as a thriller when the absence of suspense is crippling for the whole endeavour and most of the narrative is bogged down in irrelevant sequences.

Ben Affleck keeps the same face for the entire film with no sign of wanting to do anything else, while the provocative and defiant woman Ana de Armas tries to conjure in her performance basically at almost every turn feels too forced.

Ultra disappointing. Not for nothing was it shelved and forgotten.

He scowls his way through this whole movie. I think it is supposed to signify deep emotion under the surface but it comes off as petulant. The plot makes no sense and it is so slow paced. Instead of building tension it just makes you want to fast forward though long stretches where nothing of significance happens.
There is no one in this movie, besides the dog, that you really care about. The 2 stars are for Ana trying to make something cohesive in this mess. I hope to see her in better movies in the future.

while i love Adrian Lynne and Anna d'armas, and don't mind Affleck, this wasn't an erotic thriller as much as a confusing yawner. and i guess it goes without saying, but the trailer is misleading.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Showing someone's boobs doesn't make a film erotic, and knowing who the killer is since the beginning, and not adding another layer of mystery, disqualifies your movie as a thriller. 'Deep Water' is an absolute mess. Sam Levinson has never been a good writer, but 'Euphoria's' new season and this thing are, without a doubt, his worst screenplays to date. Expand

Unfaithful is a 9.5 out of 10. This is a 6.5 out of ten. So I’m rounding up to 7. It had all the Adrian Lyne beats, but not as strong of a story. Maybe it was supposed to be a satire?

I want my time back. This is easily one of the worst films I've ever had the displeasure of watching. 1 point for Ana De Armas looking great but the film itself was awful. Basically Cuckold the movie

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Sad Affleck murders his promiscuous wife's male prey in a slow paced drama thriller. Textured and well produced I was impressed by the cast and overall pacing. While it lacks a sophisticated screenplay, the sheer gravitas of the lead cast make it hard to not be drawn into the movie. It’s films like these that make me believe that he go extremely lucky in writing two good seasons of a television show but makes and writes bad movies. Everything about this film is bad. The cinematography is weak and bland, the music is incredibly forgettable and Ben Affleck and Ana De Armas aren’t very good. What really destroyed this film was the story and the writing. The writing and dialogue are atrocious. You have a 6 year old child who talks like a 40 year old man. The characters aren’t characters. They are hollow shells attempting to resemble characters but failing to do that and not because they are bad people. They are incredibly morally flawed characters but that’s not what makes me hate them. They don’t have any clear identifiable personality. They are blank slates from beginning to end and I despise it. This is true for all the characters. Jacob Elordi shows up at one point and the film makes a big deal about it but he’s gone after 30 minutes. I get that his purpose was to show Ana De Armas sleeping with other guys but why not give him a personality that rivals Ben Affleck’s if he had one. The story here is stupid. It follows Affleck’s feelings on allowing his wife to sleep with other men so it can save their relationship but it doesn’t go anywhere. The characters don’t go on any journey. They are the same at the end and not to mention how anticlimactic the story is. Don’t check this out at all. It was a complete waste of my time and it will be a complete waste of yours. Expand

An adaptation of the 1957 novel of the same name written by Patricia Highsmith, Lyne's "Deep Water" moves away from his erotic thrillers and proposes a marital ménage ("Gone Girl", Fincher 2014) in the style of P.T. Anderson, that is to say based on the mutual complicit domination that cancels the dimorphism between the two (Affleck is 192 cm tall, de Armas 168). In the movie he defines her a schizophrenic and she calls him a psychopath, both express their possessive passion desiring themselves for who they are, he a beautiful, rich, intelligent macho, death trafficker and murderer, she a chica caliente, provocative nymphomaniac who loves to betray her husband to enjoy his humiliating jealous revenge. Indissoluble empedoclean interweaving between Thanatos and Eros enshrined by the 6-year-old daughter who understands the high-bourgeois family affair and subscribes to it, it bores and does not seduce even when Melinda sings at the piano "Via con me" by Paolo Conte, chansonnier who in turn now entertains more with his craft than with art.

The streaming services seem to drop multiple new titles weekly. Anyway, we are catching up with Deep Water, the so-called erotic thriller from erotic thriller master director, Adrian Lyne, and starring Ben Affleck and Ana de Armas. There's been a lot of chatter about the salaciousness of this one - mostly because of that failed Affleck-de Armas relationship, but who doesn't like a good erotic thriller. Here's how hot and bothered Deep Water got us.

Deep Water follows the story of Vic and Melinda Van Allen (Affleck and de Armas), a socialite couple in a small town, who have an unconventional marriage. Vic and Melinda seem to have an understanding whereby Melinda has lovers outside of the marriage and Vic accepts her philandering in order to keep the marriage intact. Vic isn't entirely satisfied with the arrangement and tries to discourage Melinda's boyfriends from continuing their trysts. When one of Melinda's former lovers goes missing, Vic threatens Melinda's new boy toy by claiming to have killed the former boyfriend. The arrangement becomes untenable as Melinda's escapades become more public, the community begins talking about the Van Allen's and the missing boyfriends, and Vic's jealousy bubbles over. Sexy hijinks ensue.

An erotic thriller needs two things to work: sexiness and thrills. Deep Water is lacking in both areas, unfortunately. First, Affleck and de Armas are a good-looking couple. Although there are some sexy moments, the movie doesn't sell what it has advertised. There are moments here and there between Affleck and de Armas and some with de Armas and the other boyfriends, but hardly enough to justify the "erotic" thriller label - nothing truly memorable. On the issue of thrills, I blame the writing for this because the game is given away pretty early. Affleck is brooding around corners, he's saying obvious and threatening things, and the air is let out of any tension there could be. While Affleck is good at being menacing, the performance and the screenplay dilute whatever intrigue there could have been.

On the other hand, there are some hilarious things that occur throughout. Erotic thrillers can veer into some campiness. Deep Water veers there. I'm just going to say two things: snails and Tracy Letts. You have to see it to believe it. It doesn't make sense, but it does become comical.

Ultimately, Deep Water is a predictable movie that doesn't provide the sexiness or thrills that should overflow in an erotic thriller. The movie has very few sexy moments and there are some laughs to be had, but the story doesn't really make any sense. Nevertheless, you might watch this one if you 2 hours to kill, so get your handful of popcorn and dive in.

The end of the movie was a little rushed and it is not one of the best Lyne's movies but this movie was a good surprise. Ben Affleck and Ana de Armas were great as Vic and Melinda. I hope watch more Adrian Lyne's films.

Very odd and very frustrating, it presents a premise thats similar to Gone Girl but doesn't carry a-lot of thrills or much of anything related to an erotic thriller like say Basic Instinct. It's not necessarily a bad film, I can't really say that by any means. It's well acted but the screenplay is just so sloppy that it drops plot points almost as quickly as it introduces new ones. Affleck and Ana de Armas make the material work but Lyne's past-his-prime direction and (very) sloppy screenwriting make the film feel more like a missed opportunity than anything else. For me, at least. Expand

Infelizmente me enganei.
