Park Chan-wook's 'Decision to Leave' is a near masterpiece that invites you to witness a most tragic yet beautiful love story. The acclaimed Korean director delivers one of its finest films by combining Hitchcockian mystery elements and a devastating concept of love that channels Wong Kar-wai. And this is a Park Chan-wook movie, so expect a lot of dark humor during the most unusual moments. But beware, because its labyrinthine plot challenges you to pay attention all the time. The photography, the montage, the acting... Sure the screenplay relies maybe a little more than expected on coincidences, but the result is more than satisfying and makes you forget these tiny details. Now I want this to win the Academy Award for Best International Film. Expand

For all the fans of director Park Chan-wook you won’t need any convincing, for anyone not too familiar with his other movies, you’re in good hands. This is a crime/mystery/romance that will have you utterly captivated.

On a mountain peak in South Korea, a man plummets to his death. As an experienced climber his death appears suspicious. Did he jump or is it possible he was pushed? Detective Hae-joon (Park Hae-il) begins his investigation and very quickly suspects the dead man’s wife Seo-rae (Tang Wei). Everything is not as it seems and as he delves deeper into the investigation he becomes entwined in a sea of deception and desire.

Park Chan-wook has created another masterpiece that’s sure to gain a lot of Oscar buzz. This is filmmaking, an excellent story with superb performances, topped off with some amazing cinematography and music. Park Hae-il as the troubled detective being pulled in two conflicting directions, his job and his heart. Tang Wei as the grieving widow, she gives an amazing performance. It’s a slow burner but the chemistry between Tang Wei and Park Hae-il is brilliant. The story is dark and contains elements you won’t see coming, including some unexpectedly comedic moments scattered throughout. It has an old-school neo noir feel to it. There will be times where you think you’ve figured it out only to have the story dart in another direction. It’s an immersive cinematic experience. A dark romance that even those of you who aren’t big into that genre will love.

What else do I have to say? This is a must see. One of the best films of the year. All you crime movie buffs out there, make sure to check out Decision to Leave. It’s absolutely stunning and highly recommended.

And that’s where writer-director Park Chan-wook’s latest comes precariously close to losing it. Mind you, the picture manages to keep itself from careening over the edge, but, in its valiant attempt to offer something more than just a prototypical suspense saga, it introduces a wide range of elements that can make following the flow of the narrative somewhat challenging at times. That’s further complicated by a screenplay that tends to jump around more than it needs to, especially in the opening half-hour during that critical phase where the movie is establishing itself. Thankfully, those rough patches get smoothed out as the story goes on, enabling the film to ultimately live up to its thriller designation, even if it takes a little longer than it probably needs to in doing so. Still, this tale of a detective investigating a possible homicide who becomes obsessed with the victim’s widow (a prime suspect in the case) serves up a generally compelling yarn whose title is ably reflected in many of the picture’s diversely interwoven story threads. It’s also refreshing to see a film in this genre play itself out with an ample amount of offbeat humor and inventive camera work, something all too infrequently included in pictures of this stripe. Nevertheless, “Decision To Leave” could have used a little more fine-tuning to make it work more effectively and more truly deserving of the many awards and accolades it has received thus far. It’s a fun watch with some intriguing elements that distinguish it from its peers, but it’s not quite everything it could be as movies in this genre go. Expand

It can be said that Park Chan-wook is a director who seems to overcomplicate certain matters, but I think his desire to be intricate is much more than a pretentious element on his part, but rather what motivates him as a filmmaker.

Now, to make the follow-up of a film like The Handmaiden was going to be a tough job, even for him, surpassing himself was more than just a challenge.
For my part I don't think he succeeded, but that in no way means that this is a lesser film.

Decision to Leave is something that could be categorized as a love story. One that is far from simple, but not really complicated either.
Here what at first seems like curiosity, quickly turns into an obsession. An obsession that does not seem to be repressed and yet never explodes even though the two people involved are fully aware of the situation, and both reciprocate their feelings.

The chemistry between the leads is essential for that and they both deliver. In their scenes together there's more meaning in what they reflect physically than in what they express with words and that is not easy.

The questions raised by their interactions is the spice of this film and what provides most of its suspense.
The concept of self-destruction looms large between the motivations locked in two unreliable people as to what their emotions are expressing and what they are hiding, so at the conclusion, it becomes quite clear that the sad ending was all they were going to be able to aspire to.

The movie demands its audience to pay close attention to every detail and to critically think about each character's behavior. There are plenty of hidden players and hidden motives to discover without explicit storytelling. That's why some people might believe the second viewing of this movie is the most enjoyable.

The decision to leave is perhaps the most complete film of Korean filmmaker Wook٫Fantastic film editing, precise camera movements, and finally, an incredibly wonderful director like Hitchcock!!!
The only fault that can be taken from the movie is related to the script. The script could be more exciting considering its genre, but Wook showed his weakness here! And at the end of the movie, there is a free take on Hitchcock's vertigo, which may not be as big as it is, but it is comparable. In both movies, the suspense is excellent.

I didn't really deliver the emotional gut punch that I think it was going for. I think that's because the film was too busy, too frenetic, to let me sink into that feeling. It's a film that seems to want to do everything, and the result is that it doesn't excel at any one thing and is probably a bit too long. Don't let any of these quibbles put you off watching it though. It's still a good time overall and does a lot of interesting things. I found Tang Wei to be quite an enchanting presence. Expand

The Director does not have control of his material, throwing up stuff on the wall to see what sticks. Because he is not sure, the movie is easily 45 minutes to one hour longer than it needs to be to make its points. The Director knows how create cheap jokes that could be confused for wittiness or boldness, but then one realizes that they only were thrown in and do not really help carry the story. In the end the plot seems both pointless and unsatisfying. Expand

To innovate the everlasting theme of impossible love, is it enough to amalgamate it with a direction inspired by anime and with a Hitchcockian police plot ("Vertigo")? I have the impression that, if I'll remember the film, it will be for the considerable efforts of aesthetic originality and not for the rather latent emotions (femme fatale/dark lady and final scene included): the former do not reinforce the latter, rather they weaken them, perhaps because the complexity of the subject is discovering impossible to manage or even just to describe (drama, thriller, neo-noir, romance, melo, crime, mystery, etc.). The script void between the first and second parts and a disarming verbosity remain unjustified.

THE BAD: I found it hard to follow at times. It is so dense that overwhelms.

The important point of the film was the direction of Park Chan-wook, the positive side of which was the technical progress of this master Korean director, and the negative side of it was the separation of the director from the entire film series, obviously, the direction of the film was one step above all the components of the film, especially the script.

The movie then very quicklyDecision to Leave begins with a man failing from a steep peak, which is another case assigned to detective Hae-joon (Park Hae-il), who quickly assumes the man’s wife, Seo-rae (Wei Tang) as one of his main suspects. The movie then very quickly drops tons of other information and plot twists, leaving us for the majority of it as confused and seeking answers as the main detective himself. This structure and deadly tempo may be confusing to some people as it was for me. It’s easy to get lost in all the nuisances of the investigation, especially since it feels like there are a few plot holes. Some pieces of alibi aren’t that strong and could be easily tipped over. Nevertheless, the beauty of the romance between two main characters is so captivating and addicting, that you deliberately look down on these aspects and focus on the dynamic between them. Decision to Leave is essentially mainly a romantic story of Hae-joon and Seo-rae. It’s another one of love stories that have too many obstacles to ever become real and bear fruit–a concept so popular in culture, one could argue it’s impossible to breathe new life into it. Yet, Park Chan-wook manages to do so. The true essence of the movie lies in its attention to detail. For one reason, it’s a crime film, so it’s quite self-explanatory why the director gives them so much attention in terms of plot. But these details are also the main tool to tell a blossoming love story between Hae-joon and Seo-rae. When watching Decision to Leave, viewers are eager to see the romance finally come alive in its full form, especially since the movie treats us with numerous minor gestures from both characters. We’re practically addicted to the chemistry between the two and are rooting for a happy ending for them, though, deep down we know it’s not meant to be.

Both main actors make every effort to keep us hooked, and with nostalgic, foggy scenery, we watch the film as if we were in hypnosis. It works so well we overlook the tiny holes in the script. Although the director makes sure it has a lot of breadcrumbs to pick as we watch it, though, it’s impossible to do so at the first viewing, which makes a rewatch almost mandatory. Outdoor scenery isn’t the only strong point in Decision to Leave’s astonishing graphic storytelling. It also presents interior scenes so well-framed, adding another reason why you stay involved until the very end. With such unique plot, Decision to Leave is a movie flawed in a number of ways. It’s simultaneously so compelling it just lives rent-free in your head and heart weeks after you’ve watched it, which is, frankly speaking, a notable achievement.
