Seconldy the movie is just not funny it just randomly stumbles over sensitive issues and terrible sterotypes. I knew she wasn't going to let the 'weave' comment go. Isn't the weave thing just tired now? Then the white girl saying she wants her black boyfriend's big black manhood? Seriously? Two thumbs down. A younger audience might look past the prejudice, but the movie is still dull and incredibly slow. Expand

The New York Times of course gave it a rave review, which tells you how far the newspaper is willing to go in order to suck up to political correctness and seem hip. As for users, the reviewers are either too young or too stupid to understand what constitutes good satire. Check out the film "Putney Swope" for comparison.

I love how the film focuses on issues of not only race but sexual orientation, and general stereotyping as well. Throughout the movie, a lot of great topics were touched, but I feel that the delivery was very poor and the story-line was a little confusing. At the end of watching the movie, I’m sad to say that, I questioned what the ultimate message was. Yes, the movie did touch on many issues on race but I wish that they would have focused more on why these issues exist and how we can solve the problem. I appreciate the humor throughout the movie but I feel that this movie seemed to be making fun of black issues rather than coming from a more serious approach. At the end of the movie, even as a black woman, I felt racism wasn't a serious reality for most and instead it’s something “funny”. Many may disagree that the movie should have gone deeper and focused more on the struggles of racism, from a more serious approach, so that viewers could leave the theaters more willing for a change. It’s up to you to watch the film and see if you agree with this statement or not. Expand

I’m a minority and this movie is awful and offensive. Narcissistic privileged girl who gets a pass as a character bc her skin is darker than the usual overly, self important pretentious c**t.

I like the idea, and fresh perspective, and maybe sometimes things have to be offensive to get attention, but drawing racial lines is too easy. For example, instead of saying ‘dear white people’ which instantly calls out a battle invitation, how about ‘love, black people’ This will get your messages put in a more positive tone, and being directed towards everyone outside of your own group including other minorities and just plain ignorant people, whole saying this is my perspective instead of saying you and this specific group and it’s perspective is the problem. Because by doing this you are than just being just as racist against white people, by overgeneralizing

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I’ve only watched part way through season one, and all I see is a cliche and racial stereotypes. Also it’s a show that generalises white people and make them out as racist pigs. It brought up some good points and it wasn’t for the writers trying to draw people in with drama and sex, the show could be actually a decent show if they work it out and make it factual. Because the only good points brought up so far are that they complain and hardly talk about what they like. Expand

Is it about the student politics or racism?

Actually, I don't understand this film, I mean the story, what it intended to tell us. Maybe it's for Americans only. I thought it could be some underrated cool comedy, but what I just saw was definitely not expected. I kind of felt it was a student politics and if it stayed like that way I would have had no problem. But they said it is a comedy and I did not get any, in between it became a racism thing. I never understood this American racism, why they're making it so complicated. Especially the condition of the US is not looking good right now and this film pours a more oil to it. I'm neither white nor black or an American, and sorry I did not find it a good film. Even more, I don't get, how a television series is getting ready to follow-up it. So no offense for those who liked it, seems I'm in a wrong place. I just rated and reviewed what I felt it deserves, other than that I'm not against the film. I'm out of here!

As happens sometimes, those are the only 2 1/2 minutes of comedy in the film. The rest takes a satirical, but serious look at racial dynamics, college politics and personal relationships. It's set at a fictional college where residential hall rivalries cause conflict. Surprisingly, in all the cultural discussion, there's a positive subplot about gay issues. The performances are genuine, but writer/director Justin Simien holds too tightly to his messages, which gives the dialogue too much didactic weight. Young people might enjoy the MTV-tinged drama, but don't go expecting lots of laffs. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The beginning of the movie was excellent because it very quickly and efficiently gave a large amount of backstory without coddling the viewer. I felt that the early scenes of the movie was where the movie was the strongest. As a viewer It was easy for me to understand the plights of each of the four main characters on which the movie was focused on. All of the actors performances were full of emotion and feeling, everyone carried their own. As someone who doesn't pay as much attention as he probably should to issues of discrimination and prejudice, this film portrayed, and introduced a variety of issues in a way that I was able to quickly grasp and understand. Instead of blatantly stating what part of Black culture that a character was supposed to represent, the film used context and imagery to achieve the same message. The bread and butter of the film was showing the interactions and experiences that people of certain groups and orientations go through and what they feel during these events. The film was also very friendly in its presentation and did not at all during any moment, come off as preachy or oppressive. However, I thought that it was perhaps a little too friendly. Instead of taking the opportunity to enlighten the viewer on some issues the movie read more like a safe and formulaic story. The plot line was also a bit hard to follow because the story felt so much like simple life events. Thats not to say that it was bad, its just not the usual overstimulating action flick that I would usually go see. In conclusion, the movie was great, the actors were on point, the cinematography was quirky, and the story was educational for me but I somehow expected to see a more provocative film. It was a movie that I strongly recommend you go see in theaters but I don't recommend that you buy on DVD. Expand

Showing up to the movie theater at Century City I was surprised to see that there weren't as many people that I would have expected, however, this was most likely because I went to catch the late showing on Sunday night. Not surprisingly, I did in fact enjoy the movie. Personally, I think it was clever, motivational, funny and educational all at the same time. I have to admit that although it was not my favorite movie of all time, I enjoyed watching a unique movie which did not use the typical cliché tricks to make a movie interesting.

I believe that the purpose of this movie was to show that there are many ways of being an activist. There are several ways you can speak up and be creative. The point is that everyone's story and situation is different, and everyone experiences life differently and act based on those occurrences or understandings. Overall, I enjoyed watching a movie that showed that it is okay to fight for the same thing in different ways; in the end it is the goal that matters the most.

The image of walking into a college campus setting and see the abundance of blonde hair and blue eyes. Automatically may have someone with darker hue skin feel as if they are in the wrong setting. Ethnic diversity is no longer hiding in the background but diversity holds place in front of our eyes. Dear White People is a reminder of things that I do, Hispanics are said to hardly leave tip and I sometimes do not. I try to justify why I tip a certain amount of money due to the service I was provided. I have once tipped of large amount so that I won’t be judged as a typical Hispanic that does not leave tip money.
Dear White People highlights the importance of millennial to recognize opportunities we have and to use them properly to propel towards equality for all races. Although millennial do have the fortune of having technological support, it is important to understand that we also have to keep focus on issues that are relevant to our generation. As a generation of millennial, we must act upon unequal treatments that affect our generation. We must commit and not become distracted with the fast-pace technological life and focus on what truly matters to us. We must discuss, and use our generation’s gift, technology, with each other and not at each other in regards to equal treatment.

All in all, DWP is pretty bland, for what is really going on in America. The survival rate for encountering a traffic cop is now at 50-50. DWP doesn't address that at all. There's an lack of clever one liners about the white - black thing
Also, DWP does a poor job of explaining "blacks can be prejudiced, but they can't be racist".
A better way of putting that would be: Blacks can never enjoy white privilege.
And DWP does a poor job of addressing the "Racism is over because of Obama" hypocrisy. As long as whites are still 99 percent of all doctors, lawyers, bankers and wealth and income, racisims isn't over.

Having said that, DWP is a cleverly constructed film, with something to say, which mixes personal storylines well with the larger message. It's funny to everyone except to Angry Whites aka racists.

The acting, directing, script, cinematography etc. etc. is superb.
I would have like more Ebony and Ivy witticisms, I really missed those.

The film is smart, punchy, andI was first exposed to Dear White People by its trailer. The trailer was so promising it put the movie to a much higher level of expectation than it actually is so it could have only been a slight disappoint. The film is smart, punchy, and funny, for a film about racism and racial tensions.

The preppy college setting screams for an amazing story about racial tensions and racism. The black characters that the film follows - Coco the girl who wants to be white, Lionel the awkward gay guy that doesn't quite fit in, Troy who fits in but isn’t quite himself, and the infamous Sam who is basically a modern day activist with a secret boyfriend - are actually good archetypes of nowadays college educated black people because they are all unique if not for the color of their skin.

With this basis Simien delivered an interesting film about racial tensions between blacks and whites without shaming or blaming one of the two parties involved. But the film sort of feels like a fluff piece that didn’t really dive deep into the subject. The white characters are mostly stereotypical, they are the same to be honest, arrogant, and entitled. The film quickly becomes more about about finding one’s identity and western society in general than racial tensions. Maybe, that’s the point, one of the message behind it is that racial tensions stems from the way our society is, with whites liking the black cultures but not its people? I don’t really know but at least Dear White People is a good conversation starter.

As for the actors, I mean the ones with layers to their characters, they gave a stellar performance. Tessa Thompson portrayed a riveting Sam with talent, wit and insolence. And Tyler James Williams was probably the easiest character to relate to, he likes what he likes and doesn’t try to change who he is.

For a first film Dear White People is interesting and if the trailer hadn’t been so good I probably would have been in awe after watching it. @wornoutspines

I came expecting a great comedy based on the average score left by the "critics". It's labeled a comedy so I was hoping for something funny, similar to White Men Can't Jump or White Chicks but what I watched was a drab racist drama.

A few direct quotes from the movie;

"what's wrong is he afraid letting the negroes gather in groups might start a little rebellion on his plantation? Well you tell him from me he should be."

"Dear white people in a shocking reversal using the term African American is borderline racist now. It turns out if you're too worried about political correctness to say black odds are you secretly want to call us ****

While I do laugh at the comedic jabs thrown at woke liberal idiots over their "covert" woke nonsense policies and naming conventions that do **** all to help anyone of color this just wasn't all that funny.
