There is a huge payoff at the end, and I thought Sophie Turner did a great job as Jean Grey. I suggest people go into this with low expectations in order to get some enjoyment. Expand

Dark Phoenix is a disappointing end to 20th Century Fox's X-Men movie franchise.

I really like the MacAvoy/Fassbender-led series of movies (even Apocalypse), but Dark Phoenix is a let down. They tried so hard to adapt the Dark Phoenix saga (which was ruined in 2005's The Last Stand) that they produced a boring movie. I always thought Sophie Turner was miscast as Jean Gray and this movie proves my point. The Genosha island finally appears in a movie but it amounts to nothing. The D'Bari aliens appearing in the movie are of little importance. In contrast with reviews though, I didn't find the actors' performances as soulless or bad. It was just a troubled project from beginning to end, so much that the film's entire 3rd act had to be reshot. Blame it all to an inexperienced director debuting with a big production and messing it up. Dark Phoenix isn't as bad as reviewers say, but it's no good either.

Farewell to McAvoy, Fassbender and Co. as the X-Men franchise returns to Marvel. But it will be years before the new X-Men appear in the MCU.

But more than half of the movie is slow and boring. And that ending, damn (TDKR). It is not worthy for mutants after 19 years. The villain is the bad bad for the reasons we've seen a thousand times, kill the humans, reign on earth and repopulate it with their species (Man Of Steel). Erik changes his mind suddenly from bad to good, you can see that Jennifer did not want to act for a while ago and they killed her only to run out of this franchise from the beginning (it's not a spoiler, it was always known that she was going to die), Quicksilver leaves at the beginning and disappears to appear 2 seconds at the end when they remember him since in the re-shooting he was not there. You can see the scissors and the Frankenstein that came out a bit when they re-shot it. Expand

There is very little to remember about this movie and again this is disappointing to say when these X-Men movies from Fox usually have a rich storyline look at First Class or Days of Future past amazing storytelling even Apocalypse which was just an okay movie had a decent storyline. The story was just not interesting and compelling enough, it was just so mediocre and forgettable.

There was with weird plot thread though involving Charles Xavier that I wasn’t buying at all. Without saying too much the plot point was about Charles Xavier was always the bad guy in these X-Men movies and he has a massive ego that puts everyone in danger, to be fair there were moments in the movie that made you consider that a bit but when you think of the Past X-Men movies and all he has done for the X-Men it just makes zero sense, I’m all for character evolutions but this “twist” they were going for didn’t work and almost contradicted the story involving Charles in other movies. Also the performances, I really can’t say much about the performances which again is disappointing because the cast in this movie is really good there were great performances from James McAvoy(Charles Xavier) and Micheal Fassbender(Magneto) in all X-Men movies they were involved in ,but here they just gave okay performances like there isn’t one scene were I can recall an outstanding performance from anyone from the cast members. The X-Men were fine,Mystique was just there and Quicksilver was wasted, the best part about the recent X-Men movies was wasted, well done movie.

The villains were bad and I don’t mean Jean Grey I mean the actual villains that were in this movie were extremely forgettable there was a particular motivation for the villains but it was never expanded on and the villains fell very flat, Jessica Chastain who played one of the villains gave a very bleak performance with was supposed to make the villains menacing and cold but came off as dry and the movie didn’t seem explore all the necessary features of these villains for them to be interesting or compelling.

Okay the stuff I liked was the action in the closing 2nd and last act was good, I usually don’t recall the First Class series for its action scenes but Dark Phoenix had really good actions scenes and probably some of the best action scenes in all of the X-Men movies, almost every one of the X-Men that were involved in the fight scenes looked cool I have never seen Cyclops in a good action scenes in these X-Men movies but Dark Phoenix did it also Storm looked cool and Magneto always does something impressive in these movies. Also the music was decent as well, Hans Zimmer who composed the music did a fine job with the theme music especially some of the action.I know I said there wasn’t an overall great performance from Dark Phoenix but there wasn’t any terrible one either and Charles Xavier was the most compelling character of all of the characters with the story involved.

Lets talk about Jean Grey or Phoenix who the story is based on, this time they tried again and they just can’t seem to get this Phoenix story right. the story is not too different from X-Men 3 Except dark Phoenix is centered around Jean this time and there are no subplots like in X-Men 3 to slow down the plot. Sophie Turner did the best she could with the story that was there this Jean unlike in X-Men 3 didn’t have a split personality where by there was a good Jean and an Evil Jean, Dark Phoenix’s Jean was more overwhelmed with all the powers she had and didn’t know how to control her powers so and this lead to her freaking out most of the time and losing control of herself and her powers, was this the best way to reintroduce the Dark Phoenix story, no not at all. However the Jean Grey character had a very cool showcase of her powers at end of the movie.

The First act was decent it introduced the characters nicely and the plot quickly but after that the movie was just slow and dry especially in the 2nd act were the villains started to show up but didn’t really improve much then the third act with was the best part of the movie with exciting action and the epic moments that were supposed to happen as well as dramatic moments fell flat as well.

Look did i think this movie was bad , no it’s not bad at all it’s not Fan4stic or Batman and Robin but at this stage this type of movie isn’t good enough Fox hasn’t made a really good X-Men movie until Days of Future Past(excluding Logan), Apocalypse was okay and Dark Phoenix is just so mediocre and rather lazy. If this is the last X-Men movie with this cast then I’m really glad Fist Class and Days of Future Past were made but Dark Phoenix was not the end I had hoped for.

I prefer it over Wolverine Origins, I think, but there is hardly any character development and the villain is very 2 dimensional. I'm a huge fan of the X-Men and have been for ages, but it's so sad to see the series end on such a disappointing note. I've been defending this series for ages as nearly all the films are great, but I find it hard to look for any big positives in the film. There were some terrible one-liners in the film but apart from them, the acting was mostly good, but apart from that and maybe the first act, the film was very flat. There weren't any bits where I thought "Omg this is the worst f#cking thing" but there weren't any moments where I was like "This is amazing". There was just so much, and yet so little going on at the same time.
I could go on for hours about my back and forth opinion on the film, but if I could try and sum it up in a few words it, they would be anticlimactic, rushed and lacking backstory and motive. Still, definitely not the worst I've seen.

Without going into spoilers, I can't really say much except that the action was great from sequence to sequence, Quicksilver was actually pretty good when he was being a full-on hero without being confined in the X-Mansion, and the third act of the film put a smile on my face, finally. Everyone in the third act had their moment and their time to really shine with their power and it paid off then. That doesn't make up for the other two-thirds of the film that were just abysmal. Professor Xavier was horrible in this and the writers clearly wrote him off polar opposite of what he is supposed to be in the X-Men movies. The acting, in general, wasn't bad at all and I admire the cast for doing their best with the script they were given. But everything else just fell so flat for me. Due to the production issues, multiple delays and a Disney/Fox Acquisition, 'Dark Phoenix' just fails to fly up to expectations. Expand

The saga should not have existed at all, beginning and ending with the first chapter. Once accepted the opposite decision, the plot has been dusted off many times and often with a decent conclusion, but here we are in Disney house and therefore the family movie also dominates among the X-Men: "I know what I have to do now... protect my family". Enough, it's too much.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I watched this movie when I binge watched all the X-Men movies last year. I didn't understand what all the fuss was about. People seemed to really hate it, but I didn't mind it much. Recently I have begun reading the X-Men: Dark Phoenix graphic novel, and now I understand why. They should have just adapted the graphic novel into a movie and it could have easily become more successful than most MCU movies. But they those to write an original story, and that's not saying in a good way.

First of all, let's get the praise over with. The CGI and VFX of this movie are amazing. Now that I look back, it is literally the only reason why I liked this movie. The action scenes are also fun to watch. The story may be mediocre, but it's original nonetheless. They actually decided to do something new and unique. Unlike Days of the Future Past and First Class, they didn't use Wolverine for a cameo, so that's also something positive. The music was also pretty legendary. With all that said, now let's get to the critical part.

So the first problem this movie faces is the timeline. This is supposed to take place a little less than a decade before the incidents of the first movie. So the situation has to be more similar to that movie than, let's say, Apocalypse or Days of the Future Past. But here we have drastically young Charles Xavier and Magneto. Magneto has chosen to live in exile after his confrontation with the humans (don't ask which one). Mystique is with Charles and later gets killed by Dark Phoenix. So let's get this straight - Everyone aged immediately in 10 years, the government does not want to disturb mutants and then decides to target them again, Magneto goes back to being rogue and Mystique comes back to life?

Secondly the characters. Most of them looked like they were just brought for the sake of fan service, and were heavily wasted. Tell me, what did Quicksilver do in the entire movie other than yet another slow motion run in which he failed big time? Magneto was there only to be just another X-Man who will fight the bad guys (the question being what is Magneto even doing here; he wasn't in the Dark Phoenix saga). Mystique, like I mentioned, was just there to die. So was Jean's father. D'Bari replace the Hellfire Club here, even though they do almost the same thing. Charles Xavier gets whooped once again by Jean. Only Cyclops and Nightcrawler continue being themselves. Everyone else gets ruined.

Thirdly the story. Where do I begin from? This whole thing is one hige pool of mess. X-Men save the world, Jean absorbs the Dark Phoenix matter, slowly becomes Dark Phoenix, Mystique says the team should be X-Women, something something D'Bari get Jean, they attack a bank, now mutants are evil, Magneto takes Xavier's side, fighting fighting, the end. Congrats, the movie is complete. Now everyone bring your money and we will make more of these. What was the whole point of doing this? Why did they make this movie? What does it contribute to the franchise?

Personally I'm all in for the awesome CGI and cinematography. But considering this is supposed to be the last movie of the franchise, they should have done something better. Even the poster is a copy of Captain Marvel and Star Wars Episode IX. X-Men should have known when to stop. Or even better, they should have continued with a Deadpool movie series eventually separating from the main franchise. That would have been way more fun to watch than this... thing.

It's doing the same thing over and over again expecting something to change. Only 13 years after their first attempt to do a film of the Phoenix saga, Fox hired Simon Kinberg, the same writer who previously adapted the story for X-men Last Stand, to do another take on the story and also that he should helm the film in his directorial debut. Unsurprisingly, we've gotten another failed attempt at doing the story justice and an unsatisfying conclusion to a franchise which has been evolving for 19 years.

The X-men franchise has never been the best at maintaining a clear continuity, but this time it feels like we've missed entire films that would be required to fill the gaps in between this and Apocalypse. There's almost a 30 year gap between this film and First Class, but our leads haven't even aged a decade. Jean and Cyclops went from getting to know each other in the previous film to being in love at the start of the film. Magneto has apparently been forgiven for nearly killing everyone (several times), has given up on his grudge against humanity and set up the island of Genosha as a safe haven for mutants. And at some point Xavier has pretty much ended the prejudice towards mutants and his X-men, being in direct communication with the President and being sent out to complete missions as a sign of the newfound peace between humanity and mutants.

Whilst they're out on one of these missions, Jean comes into contact with a mysterious alien force giving her the powers of the Phoenix. You may be wondering how this connects with the previous film where she's shown briefly wielding these powers, but just like the Mister Sinister tease at the end of Apocalypse this is never explained.

After taking on these powers, Jean begins to become corrupted by her power and losing control putting all those around her in great danger. This is certainly an improvement over Last Stand, with the inclusion of the alien presence being a somewhat more loyal take on the source material and a strong performance from Turner showing us Jeans inner conflict battling her increasing insanity caused by the powers of the Phoenix.

But even with this focus on Jean, we never get the emotional resonance the story requires, in large part due to the lack of build up to such a major storyline in the previous films. The original Phoenix story from the comics was so effective was because the characters were developed across years of storytelling. But we've only known this version of Jean from one other movie where she was only ever a supporting character. Just like Last Stand before it, the film is rushing to these massive story moments without ever laying down the groundwork for us to feel connected to Jean to begin with.

Everyone else in the film just feels like they're all on autopilot, just going through the motions of the story and not offering anything interesting or that we haven't seen before from previous films. Though this is not tho the fault of the actors, who mostly do the best with the material given. Instead it's more due to the screenplay, which is more focused on moving the story forwards and never spends enough time allowing the characters to react to everything happening on screen. We never even get another creative bullet-time set piece from Quicksilver, in spite of these being high points of the previous two films. Instead he gets sidelined along with Storm and Nightcrawler who are never really given anything to do.

Though the films greatest mistake is simply how boring it is. Last Stand was a cluttered mess, but at least it had memorable moments such as Magneto moving the Golden Gate Bridge, Wolverines final confrontation with Jean and the film still felt conclusive. In contrast this film has no re-watch value and never feels climactic. Instead it just feels like a tacked on attempt Fox made to add a last film to the franchise before being absorbed by Disney to join the MCU. At least we still have Logan to provide us with some real closure for this franchise.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Compared to X-Men: The Last Stand, this movie failed in many respects to even match that movie, let alone bring the Phoenix saga properly to screen. For a film that heavily focuses on Jean Grey, I feel that it is too soon for Sophie Turner to get to this watershed moment of the character's history. We only knew her as a secondary character in Apocalypse, and now we jump to this.

The movie took way too many liberties in retcons and character assassinations that I am not sure this is either in the Singer timeline or Logan timeline. Professor X, in spite of having seen the effects of controlling the monster or trauma within Jean's mind that will eventually lead to his death, proceeds to do the same to an 8-year old Jean when her powers directly lead to the death of her mother, and caused the father to be so resentful that she was cast out to Xavier. Xavier tried to spare her the pain, suppressed that part of her life and told her her father is dead. This same Xavier, who was taught by his future self to embrace pain and empathy as the source of his power, completely forgot that lesson with Jean. SMH

Phoenix Force is retconned to be extraterrestrial (even though in the OT and Apocalypse it is implied to be Jean's latent power). But it does not have a will of its own. Instead, when Jean absorbs it, she became emotionally disturbed, and yet a more powerful psychic than Charles in Cerebro. She found out the deception, went to find daddy, read his mind and was upset and becomes more disturbed. Fight with X-Men lead to Mystique's death.

Here is where two glaring issues with the movie arise. First, conflict is manufactured. X3 was at least justified in that the Phoenix personality was all rage, and her target was Xavier who caged her in Jean's mind. She has a vendetta with Xavier and anyone she perceives to try to cage her again. Justified. In this movie, Jean's target of rage was daddy and Xavier. Being a more powerful telepath, she saw in both their minds how the discussion of sending her off to Xavier's came. The problem is that the reveal suffers like the narrative of Luke trying to murder Kylo Ren in The Last Jedi; unreliable narrator. Except Jean stopped when she saw daddy cast her off WITHOUT seeing Xavier's response. This led to said fight and death of Mystique. Last Jedi was justified in that the reveal was oral; here the reveal is completely in Jean's control. If she played the memory a bit further, this whole conflict could have been resolved. And remember, she is only disturbed in so far as someone who just received the news of their parents' death; she is not psychotic or vengeful to try to kill either targets of her grief. The larger issue is that, until the third act fight, Jean stays in this angsty mode. Kudos to Sophie for being able to play this emotional facet competently, but when she wants to kill someone, I'm sorry but I am not buying it. She is not Famke's Xenia Onnatopp goddess level of a psychotic murderer.

Second, this movie's main casualty, Mystique, only affects Beast and Magneto. Yeah, Jean is shocked to have caused her death, but I have no idea how she is connected to Mystique any deeper than she is to Xavier and Scott. Both are alive at the end. X3 did a passable job in raising the stakes by killing the father figure (Xavier) and lover (Scott) to show how Jean/Phoenix is turning to villainy. But here, Jean will always be the tragic character, never fully villainous despite not having a split personality to "justify" the murder.

Ironic that in this SJW climate, the movie wants us to have sympathy to Jean by playing the stereotype of women being weak, emotional creatures. Jean's conflict is completely her doing, and it is never shown how she got over this character flaw of jumping to conclusions. That climax where she wants to protect "her family" is not an organic flow; even when she went with white-haired alien woman antagonist it is more to solve her Phoenix problem rather than having any real world domination or vengeful motivations. Oh yes, the alien antagonists. Forgettable ancillary characters. Ironic that for a movie shy in killing its main cast, it is actually very PG bloody. Previously Magneto and Wolverine would actively kill villains, but the climactic train fight has everyone go full lethal. Nightcrawler in particular, having Heroic BSOD, when on a killing spree of these aliens, whom we audience are told are the last of their kind. Our heroes, participating in genocide masked as self-defence. Overall, this movie can only be seen if you are willing to endure character assassinations, retcons, ridiculous conflicts and weak motivations. Even the action is very tame. Until the finale, we have very little physical demonstration of the Phoenix power (a world-destroying one that got the aliens), compared to what Magneto did in Apocalypse.

The 'X-Men' franchise comes to a disappointing and forgettable end with another attempt at looking into the iconic "Phoenix" saga, which we saw was attempted back with 'X-Men: The Last Stand' (2006), and for many, it can't get as bad or worseThe 'X-Men' franchise comes to a disappointing and forgettable end with another attempt at looking into the iconic "Phoenix" saga, which we saw was attempted back with 'X-Men: The Last Stand' (2006), and for many, it can't get as bad or worse than that. You will now look at "The Last Stand" as fondly as we look at 'X-Men: Days of Future Past' (2014), because "Dark Phoenix" is a bland, boring and as I said, forgettable entry into this once invincible franchise. A good and talented cast goes to waste with a flat screenplay, some horrible pacing and moments of unintentional hilarity. The movie starts off where we see Jean Grey as a child, for some reason, struggling to cope with adapting to her powers, everything around her is too loud and she seems to react by using her telepathy powers to lift any object and thrash them towards others where they could potentially be hurt or killed. Professor Charles Xavier (James McAvoy) decides to take her in and possibly teach her how to concentrate and use her powers for better use instead of harm and death. We see that the group of "X-Men", including; Mystique (a rather bored looking Jennifer Lawrence), Beast (also bored Nicholas Hoult), Quicksilver (Evan Peters, actually trying), Nightcrawler (Kodi Smit-McPhee), Storm (Alexandra Shipp), Cyclops (Tye Sheridan) and Jean (Sophie Turner). Something goes wrong during their space mission (when does anything ever go right in a superhero movie space mission?) and it seems that Jean has encountered a strange power source which has made her more dangerous than before. The rest of the gang try to get a better understanding of this, but are unable to figure out what is wrong. It also seems that Xavier finally got the respect from the public he's always wanted, with the public always cheering for mutants to save the day and sort out many problems. Jessica Chastain is in this movie. Why? Not sure, she's in it, and she's wasted, that's all you need to know. Magneto (Michael Fassbender) returns as well, and even Fassbender's performance can't save himself from drowning in a dull movie. Not only written by Simon Kinberg (who also wrote "The Last Stand", but redeemed himself writing "Days of Future Past") takes his directorial feature film debut here. It's not a bad effort, the special effects look nice, and he seems to handle it okay, but one can't help but wonder if it was handled by someone with big-budget blockbuster experience and we would get a much better film. The film just feels extremely underwhelming, and the middle portion of it is frustratingly slow-paced and rather boring. It doesn't feel like a big finale or a big send-off. They should have left that to either 'X-Men: Days of Future Past' (2014) or 'Logan' (2017), this falls flat. It's the kind of film you'd put on in the background while doing some work, and it's the kind of film you'll forget you even saw. You'll look at your movie calendar in shock and say; "Oh, 'Shazam!' and 'Avengers: Endgame' were released the same year as this?", it's not worth wasting a rather short 1 hour and 52 minutes on, even the movie itself wants to be over and done with. There is no post-credits scene, just get up and leave, or don't see it at all. Expand

Ultimately, I think the support from the previous movies(nearly zero) hampered any chance for this movie to hit home on any emotional level. Since I gave The Last Jedi (puke) a 3, and this is not nearly as bad as that one, I'm giving it a 4.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The acting is great, this probably has the best Scott/Jean dynamic in all of the X-Men films, and there are some interesting ideas in the film. In the hands of the right writer, this might have been a good film. If parts of it hadn't needed to be rewritten and reshot, this might have been a good film. However, what we ended up with is a bunch of scenes that do tell a story, but not a very deep one. And, hey, sometimes films don't have to be deep to be enjoyable. However, this movie is also trying to tackle some of the moral complexities of the Dark Phoenix Saga. Namely, should Jean, who has been possessed by this force, be held accountable for the events that take place. And there's no real debate about this in the movie. Some think she can be saved. Others want to kill her, until they suddenly don't. And the intent is that they're convinced to save her because of Charles' speech, and it would make sense if Charles had mentioned that Jean was possessed or that she accidentally killed Raven, except he doesn't do any of that. They listen to him because it's the Third Act and the writers need everyone to band together to fight the evil aliens that exist in this film. The X-Men are supposed to be the ones who want to protect all life, except in the Second Act where they have no problems with people becoming collateral damage. What Nightcrawler does in the Third Act completely flies in the face of the Nightcrawler character. And Jean's big hero moment basically involves mass genocide, which is ironic because in the Dark Phoenix Saga Jean was on trial for her life because she committed genocide. By the end of the film, I was numb. I honestly feel that this movie would've killed the franchise, had it not been for the fact that the franchise died when Disney bought Fox. This is such a disappointing end. Expand

X-Men Deserved Better
Dark Phoenix is extremely disappointing, but I’m sadly not surprised considering it’s extremely troubled production and multiple delays.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Second watch: Dark Phoenix is an average movie. The story approached the alien perspective in a very robotic manner. There is almost no real feelings of the relation of Jean Grey with the other X-Men. It makes all the emotions a very bland affair because of the structure in the story. And you abandon Quicksilver at 1/3 into the movie with barely no explanation ? What a bad move! The death of Raven completely falls flat and is a copy of Logan's death (thank you for the originality). It was presented in a very casual way and felt so forced. They exploited the main character of this movie very poorly and because of that, the main actress doesn't have any range into her character. The humor is just gone. Virtually no jokes in this movie. The soundtrack was made for another movie. It's a mix of Annihilation and Interstellar, and it just don't fit into this movie. It is extremely distracting. And the incessant music kills this movie. There is virtually no pauses to the long succession of tunes. Until the music stop (once, in a New York scene with professor X), the movie become more interesting. The fight in the ending with the train and aliens is quite amazing. And the FX are well done in general. I give it a 48%. There was a promising story somewhere but not within this structure. The story and the film seems like a resume of many seasons of a TV shows. And this is frustrating...I felt like they scrapped half the movie, and shorthanded a lot of things. Expand

The X-Men have always been my favorite group of superheroes. From any publisher. Together with Batman they were the first comic books I started reading as a kid and I always loved their stories and loved the characters.

But cinema has never done them justice. I'm sorry but it's true.
Beyond the love I have for the first two films and the committed work of Hugh Jackman as Wolverine, cinema has never done them justice. And I will not say anything about all the plotting and the narrative lines that Fox made, after all they're already a lost issue and beyond the results of the franchise, cinema has never done them justice.

Needless to say that considering the fact that The X-Men now belong again to Marvel, a certain part of me feels satisfaction in knowing that the characters will finally have a better representation. Or at least I want to believe that.

According to Kevin Feige, it's still a long time before we see them in the MCU and that's fine. They should give people time to get the idea that the franchise will be rebuilt. After all, it was 19 years under Fox's tutelage and the studio unfortunately had as a swan song this empty film.
And I do think this film will be the ending for Fox because I doubt that New Mutants will be released. And it's sad that they ended up adapting once again the story of Dark Phoenix and they **** it up again. I mean with all the good stories from the characters, they chose that one again?

Without inspiration, without imagination, without drama and with little action. Predictable, yes, even if you don't believe it.
The narrative is empty. There's no catharsis or more emotion. Not even in the final act and especially after having revealed that important death in the trailers. Even from there they **** things up.

The timeline is ridiculous. Another ten years have passed since Apocalypse and everyone is still the same. A lot of credit for most of the characters since for some 30 years passed and for others 20 between films and nobody aged a single day.

What a sad farewell on behalf of Fox and these X-Men with whom I was never happy. Let's see what their new film future holds because there's nothing left for them here.

* From the new cast the only one who I would rescue for the MCU would be Michael Fassbender. I know it will not happen, but I would have liked to continue having it as Magneto.

So, even without knowing much about the characters or their fictional stories, I decided to watch the X-Men franchise films. This decision was followed by some reading about the characters and the films. I tried to follow more or less the chronological sequence of events starting with prequels.

This film is set in 1992 and begins with a call from the US President to help the space shuttle, in serious difficulties on a routine mission. During this X-Men operation, Jean Gray is caught in the middle of a strange cosmic storm that luckily does not kill her. Back on Earth, Jean will gradually develop feelings of confusion and unrestrained inner anger that quickly concern everyone, especially Xavier, who, in the face of the facts, decides to reveal her family origins, the way she caused her mother's death and how her father abdicated from her. Lost, enraged, feeling cheated and betrayed by all those she trusted, Jean sets out on a lonely search for herself, eventually finding her own dark side.

Bryan Singer's departure allowed Simon Kinberg to assume the director's chair and the screenwriter's pen. However, the loss of quality is so remarkable that I cannot consider this switch positive. Anyway, the bad box office results and the brouhaha among specialized critics underline my opinion. The film has a pleasant pace and was well mixed and edited, but it disappoints us because of its uninteresting, unrealistic and uninspired script, which seems to fetch some elements from older films like "Last Stand" and "Origins" instead of giving us really new stuff. With no sense of humor, the film has less action than the previous ones, despite being well done and truly intense. It also has endless loads of clichés and melodrama, with some sentences worthy of a Mexican or Brazilian soap opera. Dialogues are truly mediocre and have some expendable moments of pure political correctness, like that sentence from Raven saying, with some sarcasm, that Xavier should change the team's name to "X-Woman" given the weight of women there. Personally, I never found the cosmic cloud story credible and that, for me, damaged the plot and the way how I adhered to it, including the final scenes, too over the top.

The cast is massively inherited from previous films and is composed of great actors, however the characters do not have the soul and profoundness they have had so far. James McAvoy is good, but doesn't seem to handle with the gray areas of his character's personality; Michael Fassbender is just average. Sophie Turner gave life to the protagonist, Jean Gray, but she was so dramatic that she sounds horribly bad all the time. Jennifer Lawrence did a positive job but was quickly put aside. Tye Sheridan couldn't have sounded more boring. The villain, Jessica Chastain, a very threatening and cold metamorph, never wins our attention and fear. The film also features ephemeral or uninteresting appearances by Evan Peters, Alexandra Shipp, Nicholas Hoult and Scott Shepherd.

In addition to these merits, the film has production values that should be highlighted. It's a Marvel movie and there are millions of dollars involved. It has a well done cinematography and decent editing, in addition to the best visual, sound and CGI effects that money could buy, and that transform some scenes into real video games: visually incredible but without any soul or sense of danger or emotion. As happened almost always in this franchise, the film has good sets and costumes. I think it is fair to also greet the makeup department and the soundtrack.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Pros: -Really solid score.
-Some good acting bits such as during Beast’s conversation with Charles after Raven’s funeral for example.
-The final battle is admittedly pretty awesome.
-I really liked how they portrayed Scott and Jean’s relationship.

Cons:
-Magneto makes a lot of dumb desicions in this movie and Fassbender, while he does have some good scenes, is clearly only here for a paycheck.
-Mystique’s makeup is jarringly worse than in previous films.
-The opening scene alone has so many unanswered questions, like how does just attaching a rocket to the X-Jet allow it to go into space? Why can Jean breathe in space? Why is duct taping a space helmet to Nightcrawler’s head enough to allow him to breathe in space?
-Vuk is not a very compelling villain. -Jean herself feels unfocused, going from scared and afraid of what her powers might do in one scene to violent sociopath in the next.
-Professor X’s arc of getting over an ego he doesn’t have feels forced and was likely only added so James McAvoy could have more screen time seeing as he is the biggest name in the whole cast.
-After Jean kills Raven, Quicksilver is noticeably absent for the rest of the movie. I know he was injured in the fight, but it still feels like the writers just forgot about him.
-“X-Women”. I don’t even need to say anything else. That line was so forced it’s cringeworthy.
-You can tell the D'Bari were supposed to be Skrull’s but were changed late into production because of Captain Marvel using the Skrull’s.

Final Verdict: Dark Phoenix had some good moments, but it just has too many problems holding it back and since the next X-Men movie is going to be a reboot set in the MCU due to Disney acquiring Fox, there is honestly no reason to see this with how mediocre it is. A disappointingly weak ending to the Fox X-Men film franchise.

Acting: 7
Plot: 4

For the twelfth instalment in Fox’s X-Men series, Dark Phoenix is the second adaptation of Dark Phoenix Saga after 2006’s X-Men: The Last Stand. The difference between these two movies is this movie is set in the new timeline (due to the events of 2014’s X-Men: Days of Future Past) while X-Men: The Last Stand was set in the original timeline. Due to the merger between Disney and Fox, this is officially the final X-Men movie but not the final movie in the franchise.

In the year of 1992, the X-Men are now recognised as heroes due to their heroic actions nine years ago during the events of X-Men: Apocalypse. The X-Men are sent to a rescue mission in space to save a group of astronauts whose space shuttle was damage by some kind of solar-like energy. They successfully rescue the astronauts but Jean Grey (Turner) is struck by the energy and absorb it to protect the X-Men’s space shuttle.

Thankfully, they are able to rescue Jean but her psychic powers have slowly grown strong after the rescue mission. As a result of her growing power, she accidently hurt her teammates and the other students during a party. She also regains her past memories that have been hidden from her. She goes to her childhood home to confront her father for some answers.

Fear of her new power and discovering the truth, Professor Charles Xavier (McAvoy) accompany the X-Men to confront her before she causes any trouble which may ruin the reputation of mutants. Meanwhile, Vuk (Chastain), who is the leader of a shape-shifting called D’Bari, is targeting Jean to steal the energy within her for her own unknown purposes.

The second attempt to adapt the Dark Phoenix Saga by Fox is once again a failure. Why is it failure? First, the plot of the movie is very badly written and seriously lacks character developments especially the main villain and the protagonists. Some of the well-known characters such as Cyclops and Storm lack screen time and they do not do anything much to develop the plot.

In addition to plot, the infamous continuity errors of this franchise continue to show up in this movie. If you have seen X-Men: Days of Future Past and Deadpool 2, you will notice the errors right away. It makes me wonder if the director or writers even watch the previous instalments before making this movie. The only good thing about this movie is the performance of Sophie Turner, James McAvoy, Michael Fassbender, Nicholas Hoult and the rest of the cast. However, their performances are not enough to save the quality of the movie.

If you think X-Men: The Last Stand is bad, then Dark Phoenix is way worse. It is very plain boring and nothing too exciting like the previous X-Men movies. As the final X-Men movie, the ending is rather anticlimactic and does not really deliver a perfect conclusion like 2017’s Logan. Now that Disney/Marvel regained the movie rights to X-Men and Deadpool including Fantastic Four, you got to wait for few years before X-Men ever show up again on the big screen.

Just saw X-Men: Dark Phoenix it wasn't as bad as I thought it would be it was actually pretty enjoyable to watch but that could be due to my low expectations of the film (idk).

Some moments felt pretty man-bashing but I wasn't sure if that was me personally reading into them that way or if that was their intent (that x-women line was dumb for so many reasons).

Like there were **** tons of times where the men saved the women/ and other people (Logan when he went back in time etc, Quicksilver when he went to the X-Mansion to save all the students, Havok taking the blunt of the blast to save Charles, Darwin when he attempted to save Angel's dumb ass from joining Sebastian Shaw and died because of it, there are many, many more times where everyone saved each other's asses but no Mystique please only remember when the women do it because those were the only times that mattered).

But despite those few times I still did enjoy the movie and really didn't think it was that bad.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The finale of Dark Phoenix was directed by an unexpected person, Simon Kinberg, long time screenwriter and producer and this is his first time to direct an X-Men film. The rest of the 6 X-Men films were directed by Bryan Singer. However, this is the first time I saw a disappointing finale, even though this year I saw Avengers: Endgame as an epic finale. The performances were the best aspects in the movie, especially Sophie Turner. It’s really difficult to be this Phoenix character Jean Grey but this is not the first time that Jean Grey had lost control of her powers, we got X-Men: The Last Stand with Jean Grey played of Famke Janssen. I really don’t want to compare Turner with Janssen because they’re both excellent. The tons of other casts James McAvoy, Michael Fassbender, Tye Sheridan,… were great as well. I was disappointed with Mystique’s skin changing and I found out she hated her original skin. However, how the characters say or do things didn’t suit the scenes so much like they’re just tired of their roles since 2011. But then, there’s also Jessica Chastain which really made a coincidence to me if I thought about James McAvoy in IT: Chapter 2 (Bill and Beverly). LOL! Anyway, I didn’t feel that she should be in this movie, not even the demons somewhere. At first, I though Jean Grey was the main antagonist or just an antagonist like in X-Men: The Last Stand, but the was a protagonist. I didn’t even know her name in the movie because her role was just…forgettable! And there’s a scene where Nightcrawler got mad at the demons, I think he should say something like: I’m gonna kill you, MotherF****r. The plot was…not cool and kinda a bit convoluted or messed up because if you see the X-Men timeline, it’s messed up as well and really confusing, because of X-Men: Days of Future Past is the finale of the future and then X-Men: Apocalypse led us to the past when James McAvoy was gonna shave his head to look like Patrick Stewart or Michael Fassbender was gonna look like Ian McKellen. The script was also terrible, I didn’t even know who wrote it like how characters say didn’t match the story much but at least it’s not as bad as Fantf4stic which was almost the worst screenplay I had ever seen. In fact, Simon Kinberg directed this movie based on the Dark Phoenix Saga from the Marvel Comics and it turned out to be not the same. The soundtrack was scored by Hans Zimmer. It’s hard to say but he did good but the big problem was his cores did not suit the scenes added to the movie. It wasn’t that epic and I found it a waste of time to purchase it or download it on my MP3 Player and the 20th Century Fox Title was ….bland like other parts of the movie, I would rather hear the 20th Century Fox Title from X-Men: Days of Future Past and X-Men: Apocalypse. The biggest problem though was the title. That’s right, “Dark Phoenix”. Is this “Dark” Phoenix? No! This is not dark or deserved to be R-Rated (despite the blood), there’s Jessica Chastain and her demons to ruin the title. Jean Grey is a good guy and used her powers for good from the train sequence. Overall, this IS the finale of X-Men that we should say good bye to these characters (poor Tye Sheridan and Sophie Turner, just 2 movies) and it turned out to be a big failure. Yes, this movie is a disappointing finale but there’s also a new movie called “The New Mutants” and I bet it would be rated R like Logan, Deadpool 1 and 2 just because I saw the trailer which looked like a horror movie (it reminded me of Brightburn).

Ratings: 3.8/10

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The general plot is around the X-men when they are in their younger years like X-men young adults. The movie takes place in the early 1990’s when a young Jean Gray founds out a few surprises concerning her past & decides to leave Professor X and his X-men. Before she leaves them she starts to change while the X-men are on a mission to save a NASA crew from a solar flare thus starting down the road to becoming the Dark Phoenix. Personally I was not as impressed with this X-men movie as when compared with the other X-men movies. The story didn’t seem as good and the plot seemed pretty weird concerning the aliens who seemed to possess humans and were after Jean Gray after she starts down the road to becoming the Dark Phoenix. Micheal Fassbender was as good as Magneto and tends to be a good actor in just about any role that he does. James McAvoy was also good as Professor X and his character had a few secrets that he preferred to keep to himself. By the end I was underwhelmed and wished for my money & 2 hours of my life back. My advice is don’t pay a cent to see this movie on DVD or at the movie theater. Wait for it to come to basic cable/ Netflix or old fashioned regular antenna TV. As for your time of losing 2 hours that you won’t get back unless you do have a time machine so it is buyer be aware. Expand

“You're always sorry, Charles. And there's always a speech. But nobody cares!”

Yikes.

‘Dark Phoenix’ ends with a flicker rather than a bang. It’s quite depressing that a franchise that basically breathed life into the superhero genre that we know today sadly stopped caring.

Despite everybody desperately holding on for hope that ‘Dark Phoenix’ would be a solid exist, I was the complete opposite - the evidence being in the development stages. Some have argued that “People have already made up their mind about this film before it’s been released, they want to hate it”, mm...no. This movie has been pushed back three times, a first time director Simon Kinberg, the test screenings was called “disastrous”, and the lack of interest the cast had towards the project.

Even the clips realised for the movie either looked atrocious or absolute cringe, especially the Mystique “Change the Name to X-Women” scene. Like, you’re addressing this to a guy (Professor X) who lost the use of his legs by saving the world, lost his friend to differing opinions, uses his fortune to construct a school for helping mutants, and creates a team to help protect humanity.

Anywhere, ‘Dark Phoenix’ is far from being worst in the series, but it’s the most dull and forgettable entry in the series, which is much worst in my point of view.

James Mcavoy and Michael Fassbender being the saving grace isn’t anything new, yet needs repeating with every entry despite their characters conflict being repetitive. Sophie Turner is fine as Jean Grey, but Turner truly shines whenever Jean is in shock and confused. Jennifer Lawrence, on the other hand, easily the weakest link as it’s never been so transparent for any actor to not give a damn. She was really bad. The Mystique make-up looks so bad and cheap for some reason. I’m guessing Lawrence didn’t want to go through the torture make-up process...well, tough sh*t. You’re being paid billions to star in these movies and the make-up being accurate to the character. If you don’t like it then leave. Jessica Chastain is fantastic as s̶k̶r̶u̶l̶l̶ Grace Randolph.

It seems like the dialogue really took a nosedive with this franchise. I mean every line being delivered by the cast felt stiff and stilted.

Also with this movie being set in 1992, it’s confusing to know that in 8 years time James Mcavoy will look like Patrick Stewart, and Michael Fassbender will look like Ian Mckellen. And don’t jump into the defense with the whole “set in the not too distant future” at the beginning of the first ‘X-men’ movie, because with the timeline being so f**ked up, it still doesn’t make it clear where anything is set. I find it extra confusing with this movie set 30 years after the events of ‘First Class’, yet the characters have barely aged during the intervening years. They could’ve easily put aging make-up on the actors to show a passing of time. I mean, sure it will look uncanny, but it’s better than not trying.

The visual effects looked questionable at best. The final battle lacked any suspense since I didn’t care about any of the characters. The cinematography and Simon Kinberg directing wasn’t anything special. I’ve seen the movie a few days ago and nothing is sticking with me in terms of memory. I can’t think of anything worst than being forgettable.

I find it alarming how a superhero movie coming out in 2019 can feel so outdated.

Overall rating: Mr Feige will like to see you now.

-Aspectos Negativos: Muita coisa em boa suma. Lutas horriveis, história com fio nenhum, personagens sem impacto, não existe momentos marcantes e parece um filme feito á pressa. Em suma, não gostei praticamente em nada do filme.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This movie was shallow, there was a forced intention to make it bigger than it really was, as for example the "solar flare" or whatever thing that destroys planets... but somehow stopped nearby earth, just in time for it to be absorbed by Grey... really?. The enemies were also shallow, I mean they were some kind of aliens, very stereotypical aliens if you ask, with the ability of acquiring human forms... I mean like thats not been used in a hundred movies and tv programs before, and that posed no real opposition, and the final one, just vanished because it could not absorb all the power it wanted... Sorry it had some action moments like when the military was after Jean, and all of that, but that has nothing nothing of special... (sigh). Hope they didnt make the trailer so appealing as to have me running to watch the movie. Expand

You know what's the most unfortunate thing about Phoenix? Not only it has a fantastic opening sequence, but the score by Hans Zimmer (the only thing I was looking forward in this movie) is not enough to save this big failure of a picture.
But let's talk positive for a second…
As said,Hans Zimmer's score is magical and brooding at the same time, almost returning to its Interstellar (2014) roots, although it's devoid of Zimmer's signature " Loudness Factor". Yeah, that Factor appears for a split-second,but it's still not enough to carry that label.
Aside from a bit of Sophie Turner, the cast is fine, but McAvoy and Fassbender steal it all.
The concept and the small scale structure Simon Kinberg (Director,Writer and Producer...Yikes) gives to the presentation I can see working with a more talented set of people.
And the s...We're sorry. If you want to proceed with the good stuff, please. Spend another million dollars.
Unfortunately, this wasn't the hot mess I wanted to laugh at because of its Production Value.
To start off, some parts of Sophie Turner I really liked, but the rest of it felt like she should've been in a S** Tape,as some of her movements and facial expressions are either weird or hilarious to look at.
There seems to be no sign of Writing and coherent Action,as everyone is just throwing punches or saying plain words. Yeah, little bits of story are here and there (Jean Grey's internal crisis with her powers,Magneto taking care of new mutants in the island with no name [I suppose it's Genosha, but the writer never acknowledges it]) but they're never used to their full potential, yet,I can see a better movie somewhere in here…
Also, where was Quicksilver this entire time?
And I still laugh at the X-Women line,AKA the greatest movie line in HISTORY!!!
Overall, luckily it's not Jurassic World 2 bad, since there are many pluses in here than JW,but worse than Dumbo and HellBoy (2019) it is.
It's a hopeless, wasted, disgusting and dramatic Production Hell movie that fails to justify its existence, other than being "the grand finale in the X-Men Franchise" .
Hell, even the studio lost faith in the movie some months ago with the whole Disney/Fox merger,so why bother spending your precious money?

As soon as I saw the credits rolling I booked it out of the theatre and was the first one out. This movie is so slow in its pacing to the point I nearly fell asleep a bunch of times. This is a superhero movie and part of one of the greatest Marvel superhero teams and there is nothing to keep somebody’s attention for longer than 2 seconds. This movie is one-hour and fifty-four-minutes long but it feels like a three-hour-long film. This is due to the boring dialogue and a slow-paced story that never really picked up at any point. Even the action scenes were boring to watch. This movie has one of the most iconic comic book person ever and they just waste her. There is like three or four action scenes in this film and every single one was just as boring as the last one. The characters for some reason changed so that they were nothing like what they were actually supposed to be. This can be mainly seen with Charles, played by McAvoy, and Nightcrawler, played by Kodi Smit-McPhee. They both had major character changes that just didn’t suit their characters at all. Also, I rewatched a clip from X-Men Apocalypse and Nightcrawler had a downgrade on his makeup effects. The makeup looks nothing like what it did in the last movie. The special effects in this film were just hideous and I couldn’t stand to look at it. This film had a budget of $200 million dollars and I think all of it went to get back all of the actors because they all probably had better movies to film. Lots of scenes in this film just ended randomly. The part where I thought the film was going to end ended up not being the ending and went on for like 2 more pointless minutes. In the end, Dark Phoenix just isn’t a good film for anybody. I give Dark Phoenix a 3.5/10. Expand

Quem escreve esses roteiros???

There is only one kinda fun action scene in the third act but it quickly becomes boring again. There's no feeling of real stakes and I blame the villains because, despite all the exposition thrown at the audience, their plan is not well explained and you are given little sense of how powerful they are or how scared you should be. Character motivations are slim or nonexistent and the cast seems entirely checked out. Overall, I cannot recommend strongly enough that you go see something else. Dark Phoenix is not the worst X-men movie but its definitely bottom 3 and should be avoided at all costs. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Probably nothing is more important to mention about this movie than the fact that it’s becoming increasingly obvious that Sophie Turner starred in this role in order to slap Conan O’Brien in the face.

The entire marketing campaign leading up to its wide release would suggest that Dark Phoenix is a trainwreck, a remake of a really bad movie made by the SAME DIRECTOR 13 years ago that no one was expecting or asking for, that got shoved back four months from a quiet, sleepy release date in November of 2018 just before Oscar season with no real competitors because of a need for reshoots on account of the script was bad and then because it apparently so generic that it copied entire scenes from other superhero movies put out at the same time by its parent company (there’s another insane element to the delay of this film’s release where James Cameron kicked it into the jaws of summer in order to protect his project Alita that I find so cruel it’s almost funny). Director Kinberg admits that the end of Dark Phoenix looked a whole lot like Captain America: Winter Soldier in the way that the mutants had were pitted against one another, but also like Captain Marvel in the way the space scenes (and in the maybe clever future connection to the Marvel universe, but equally just lazily written shapeshifting Skrull-esque villains), but also a lot like Infinity Wars with her mini Snappening, which just leads you to wonder if they were conscious of how much their film looked like it had stayed up for an all-nighter and then just cribbed off of every Marvel movie made in the last eighteen months, why didn’t they change it?

The Hollywood Reporter also talks about how this film was never meant to be a summer blockbuster, but doesn’t mention it in the form of autopsy or eulogy for the film that could have been. It talks about Dark Phoenix as a film with humbler stakes, smaller scope, a corrective to the disaster of Apocalypse. Friend says that Apocalypse clumsily tried to phoenix Jean Gray in the final boss fight, which everyone promptly forgets in order to make this movie even possible. Matthew Vaughn, who’s been making the rounds for some of his future projects while the **** of criticism for this film really ramps up, pulled back the curtain a little on the reboot in order to show what could have been, his alternate story boarding of the franchise, his desire to recast Wolverine for a younger actor, quaint notes for an innocent time before X-Men had crossed the point of no return.

I can see the merits of both sides on the film. Much, much smarter people embrace the (un)canny legacy of the Dark Phoenix storyline and its retelling as an icon of female empowerment. At the same time, the ensemble cast feels at once past due and also distractingly new. Turner is only in her second film in the franchise, whereas Lawrence, Fassbender, and MacAvoy have been in three or four, right? The effect is one of the unrequited familiarity of a distant relative comforting the orphaned child of the recently deceased at a funeral. Jean and Cyclops have a budding romance, but we’ve only really seen their chemistry over the span of about fifteen or twenty minutes before he–rudely–asks her to “Come back to me” like a wayward dog. Mystique gamely chides Prof X, “the women are always saving the men around here,” which leads one to momentarily wonder if that’s actually true or just what an X-Woman is supposed to say in 2019 to get a rise out of the Sad Puppies who are going to **** about this movie no matter what because it dares to tell a story from a woman’s perspective.

Most of my issues with the film are a lot pettier than the content... There’s a weirdly large amount of dialogue devoted to whether or not someone can read your mind: “I can’t read her mind now,” “turn up the power on my mind reading machine,” “she’s blocking my ability to read her mind,” “I didn’t need to read your mind,” “you’re not the only one who can read minds,” you get the point. And for a movie whose original intentions were to dramatize teenage angst about being queer, the sexuality of these stories is pretty hetero. Practically every man and woman is paired off. At times it seems like maybe there are too few women to fight over, so dudes magnanimously share one instead. Never thought something could make you nostalgic for anything Bryan Singer has ever done, but… no still no.

Watching this with my dad was a bittersweet end of an era, but not altogether unpleasant.... It’s strange to think about the random steps that end up defining the movies that make up your childhood, so I know that not everyone will enjoy this one, but if you’re of a certain age, and you remember your dad taking you to those first few films with Hallie Berry with all the cheesy special effects, it might bring some solace to return to this film to say goodbye.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This movie is atrocious and is by far the worst x-men movie. The McAvoy/Fassbender x-men movies were my favourites and I enjoyed all of them with the exception of this one. The plot, dialogue, and acting were all bad and it felt like the movie was developed from a fanfic and not a very good one at that.

Professor X is meant to be one of the greatest minds however this movie totally destroyed his character by making us believe that he thought suppressing Jean's memories and actually lying to her was good for her mental wellbeing. This is just a plot contrivance to make us believe how easy it would be for her to lose control and become dark phoenix.

Another contrivance was when Raven died. It was so obvious and so poorly done that I felt absolutely nothing from the scene. Actually all the characters were bland and cardboard cutouts that I did not care one whit if anyone died. They did this so that Hank and Magneto would bond together and get revenge on Jean for her death. Then all of a sudden, Magneto changes his mind and decides not to kill her.

Jean, Magneto, and Storm are meant to be some of the most powerful mutants alive and yet they were easily subdued by what looked like a human swat team? That makes no sense. That means less powerful mutants like Cyclops (who is actually incredibly powerful) seem to be equivalent to a rent-a-cop.

The villains are even more bland as they have no backstory whatever beyond wanting to take over earth to repopulate their species. We have some great actors/actresses in this film (McAvoy, Fassbender, Lawrence, Hoult, Chastain) however they all appear average at best which I think is more to do with the directing than their acting chops.

The Dark Phoenix storyline is actually really hard to do well simply because she's so powerful and unlike Superman, she doesn't have a kryptonite for villains to take advantage of. She makes the most powerful mutants like Magneto and Storm look weak in comparison. I would've thought after the mistake in the first trilogy with Hugh Jackman and that awful Dark Phoenix storyline they would've stayed away.

This movie ruined a great franchise and I wished I never watched it. I'll just pretend this movie never happened.

What could have been one of the best X-men movies ended being the worst. You have the most powerful story in your hands, you can create fear, destruction and reach so much climax paths with the Dark Phoenix and you do nothing, you reach nothing... This writer/director didn't make a tiny choice on the right path. It is one of the most bland and anticlimax movies released lately. He reached nothing with this movie, and he had on his hands the most powerful being on the Marvel Universe, the Darkest story and character, the best comic story... and he achieved nothing, absolutely nothing with it. I hope this man loses his job because he destroyed and ashamed a whole franchise. The only reason I didn't give a Zero score is because Sophie Turner surprised me... She was the only thing I thought could've destroyed the movie before watching it, but in the end she was the only one that actually saved the movie a bit. Her Jean Grey is actually very good, she showed so much potential that the director/writer actually wasted. Because Sophie Turner really sent chills and threat feelings. She was threatening and volatile; and very powerful on Dark Phoenix scenes. If she got more content from the horrible writer and director I am sure she would blow the roof as Dark Phoenix, but she just didn't have enough material to work on. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Okay now I'm home I've had a minute to reflect on this film and I do have a lot of thoughts. Mostly very angry ones. But there is some good points which I shall go through first because there wasn't many. Firstly Sophie Turner despite her slightly off American accent gives a damn good performance as Jean. The emotional scenes aren't her strongest but when she's going full psycho I am in like so there with her. Jessica Chastain elevates her dull, non-existent character into some levels of villain but that's through pure muscle on her part because god knows how she managed that.

Now the steaming pile of **** that was the rest. Firstly this would have benefited about 2000000% from a film between Apocalypse and this; I know it couldn't have happened but it severely needed it. The characters you are meant to care about like Cyclops and Storm are just sort of there. Big recognisable characters that blend into the background because there is no substance. You can't connect to characters that are part of such a huge ensemble without a lot of work and this film didn't do it.
The characters you do know like Raven and Charles are just rough approximations of characters we've seen before. Charles felt like a different person. Erik feels like there is absolute no character growth until his U-Turn in the third act. Raven well, there's nothing to say there. Hank actually feels a bit like a character with an arc but not much else besides that.
The alien dudes were all irrelevant. They were there purely to give the X-Men some random hench-people to beat up on that train. Sure they seemed menacing for like a split second and then they're all dead anyway so whatever I guess. Jessica Chastain's leader is menacing but like why are you there? While I love Jessica she had no reason to be in this film. Her guidance, if you can call it that lasts all of two seconds for Jean to almost kill Erik, torture Charles for a bit then oops gone never mind. So pointless.
The whole third act is basically a waste of time because the fight is pointless. Jean wipes out everyone in her way disintegrates Jessica and becomes the Phoenix Force. Cool. Do I care? Not really I don't know this Jean, so oh well. Bottom line Last Stand is actually better. RIP Fox X-Men.

Dark Phoenix Kinberg, at a certain point, could be forgiven. I can see him pitching the idea enthusiastically and even getting the equal reaction back. He is, first and foremost, a writer. And he, the writer and director, Simon Kinberg, therefore, surely knows on what frame to finish the film. That very piece of note flying about, the whole point gets checked off metaphorically, in those last moments. But we are getting ahead of ourselves and we are exaggerating. For beyond that very frame- surprisingly for a movie of this genre- I didn't buy a singly word of the film. It is the probably of the shortest runtime and yet the most time-consuming one. The previous chapter, Apocalypse, did make me think that maybe we've had too much of superhero films. But I resisted. Clearing out my doubts, this time, the franchise is back with another irrelevant chapter; after Days Of Future Past, everything seems like a desperate pursuit for big box office collection. I would say, that this is the olden days in rom-com genre where we are suffocated by CGI explosions, even the summer schedule at the theatre is congested. And, this is the Kate Hudson rom-com that no one asked for. In terms of comic book films, it is equivalent to Clooney's version of Batman, or current DC; pick your choice. Tomfoolery is an unintentional by product; obviously, and if not, than this is gold. The promising concept was James McAvoy's track, that too, only in the beginning, where you see him as a fully fledged egoistic leader, which later on, is crushed on by super super elements that weighs zero credibility in the narration. The only question that this so called sci-fi film asks, is why did they name it Dark Phoenix? It is not likely to be, but if another chapter does comes up, I'd recommend X-Men Mistake.. oh no, Dark Mistake- it gives that intense feeling. Expand

I didn't want too believe it was as bad as they were saying. It was that bad. Almost makes Captian Marvel seem watchable. It is not though.

I feel like Bryan Singer was directing this film it would been better but sadly he couldn’t and I understand why they have to remove him but they could have got Matthew Vaughn to direct and being a co writer then this movie would definitely been save also I was really disappointed when they replaced John Ottman and got Hans Zimmer don’t get me wrong Hans Zimmer is a amazing composer but x men is definitely John Ottman specialty like I definitely don’t understand why they replace John Ottman he should be the one who composer the x men franchises. Michael Fassbender is amazing. This movie felt really boring to me though. This movie felt really boring to me though. It also further rewrote the series' canon by killing Mystique so not only is The Last Stand non-canon every since Days of Future Past, but also the previous films X-Men and X-2. I mean, Days of Future Past was still exciting, but it didn't really set up the timeline for good sequels and the sequels such as this movie weren't too good. I hate time travel. Anyway I may review the other movies at some point. Overall, this movie didn't satisfy me. Expand

The reviews are accurate; it is a retread of everything before and then we put in lots more fight scenes to give it a sense of stakes. Interestingly, the current Jennifer Lawrence curse continues, if she is in the movie, it will tank. This movie is about getting the last dollar out of the franchise. Then again Captain Marvel was far worse than this and made tons of money. My hat is off to the marketing professionals at Disney, they made the right choice not to waste money on this one. Expand

Not only did they muck it up again, but they also mucked it up much worse than X-Men Last Stand which looks like a flawless masterpiece by comparison. It sucks so bad to see them destroy the X-Men brand with a string of a terrible movies but...they keep doing it for $$$$$$$ because people LOVE the X-Men and they'll see anything with X-Men in the title (see X-Men Origins Wolverine for evidence of this) and yet the last GOOD movie was Days of Future Past. Avoid Dark Phoenix like the plague. It's terrible. Poor acting, poor directing, and it's also incredibly long and boring. Not something I ever thought I'd associate with the freakin' X-Men but, well, there you go. Expand

Please if you Marvel guy even make a X-Men movie this bad again feel free to call it X-Woman, like you mentioned in the film.Corniest and out of place statement in a film ever..Considering there was one instance of a woman saving people and about 10 instances of men saving people in the first 15 minutes of the film. And that one woman that saved people went on a killing spree for the rest of the film,, the whole film is wtf..

In this movie, nothing happens, it was just boring and painful to watch. Every character has nothing to do in this movie, no character has any believable motivation or personality (let's not even talk about the villain, how could they make a villain worse than Malekith or Steppenwolf, seriously, I had to look at the credits to even know its name). Horrible dialogue full of clichés. The editing is choppy and the visual effects look so bad at many points. And the makeup...Ignoring Mystique's obviously lazy makeup work, everyone else looks bad, like Nightcrawler and Beast. As I said noone has anything to do: Mystique and Quicksilver barely appear in the movie, and any other character that is not Magneto, Beast or Cyclops does literally nothing. The acting was so bad. Every actor is just there for a paycheck, noone seem interested in what they were doing (With Sophie Turner and, maybe Michael Fassbender being exceptions because they...tried. Not saying their performance was good but they tried). Once again critizing the screenplay: It is so confusing that for most of the movie I didn't know what was going on, or why did this character do this or anything.

The worst part of all is that this is the last X-Men movie (Yeah, New Mutants is coming, but I'm refering to the main series, also, I feel that New Mutants will be bad too). It is sooooo anticlimatic, it's the complete opposite of Endgame: Instead of being a great conclusion, with a great battle, an emotional death of an important character, with tons of fanservice, we get nothing of that. This is the worst X-Men movie and one of the worst I've seen in the year. It's a complete trainwreck. It doesn't get a 0 because at least I could watch it, a 0 is reserved for those movies that I can't even watch in a single viewing.

Simon Kinberg wrote a great film called Sherlock Holmes that was so well done. So how the hell is this possible? Well when I heard about the reshoots and the delays, I knew there was problems coming ahead.

The writing and effects are the worst aspects of the film. The cast, Michael Fassbender, James MacAvoy, and Jennifer Lawrence are outstanding; trying to make a god awful movie some how work. I am frustrated with Jessica Chastain and how they wanted her to be. There are moments in which this could work, but they are afraid to commit and use cliches to finish the story. But there is a comic book. There's a reason why this film exists, so use it.

Overall, just don't watch this movie.
