X-Men Deserved Better
Dark Phoenix is extremely disappointing, but I’m sadly not surprised considering it’s extremely troubled production and multiple delays.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The finale of Dark Phoenix was directed by an unexpected person, Simon Kinberg, long time screenwriter and producer and this is his first time to direct an X-Men film. The rest of the 6 X-Men films were directed by Bryan Singer. However, this is the first time I saw a disappointing finale, even though this year I saw Avengers: Endgame as an epic finale. The performances were the best aspects in the movie, especially Sophie Turner. It’s really difficult to be this Phoenix character Jean Grey but this is not the first time that Jean Grey had lost control of her powers, we got X-Men: The Last Stand with Jean Grey played of Famke Janssen. I really don’t want to compare Turner with Janssen because they’re both excellent. The tons of other casts James McAvoy, Michael Fassbender, Tye Sheridan,… were great as well. I was disappointed with Mystique’s skin changing and I found out she hated her original skin. However, how the characters say or do things didn’t suit the scenes so much like they’re just tired of their roles since 2011. But then, there’s also Jessica Chastain which really made a coincidence to me if I thought about James McAvoy in IT: Chapter 2 (Bill and Beverly). LOL! Anyway, I didn’t feel that she should be in this movie, not even the demons somewhere. At first, I though Jean Grey was the main antagonist or just an antagonist like in X-Men: The Last Stand, but the was a protagonist. I didn’t even know her name in the movie because her role was just…forgettable! And there’s a scene where Nightcrawler got mad at the demons, I think he should say something like: I’m gonna kill you, MotherF****r. The plot was…not cool and kinda a bit convoluted or messed up because if you see the X-Men timeline, it’s messed up as well and really confusing, because of X-Men: Days of Future Past is the finale of the future and then X-Men: Apocalypse led us to the past when James McAvoy was gonna shave his head to look like Patrick Stewart or Michael Fassbender was gonna look like Ian McKellen. The script was also terrible, I didn’t even know who wrote it like how characters say didn’t match the story much but at least it’s not as bad as Fantf4stic which was almost the worst screenplay I had ever seen. In fact, Simon Kinberg directed this movie based on the Dark Phoenix Saga from the Marvel Comics and it turned out to be not the same. The soundtrack was scored by Hans Zimmer. It’s hard to say but he did good but the big problem was his cores did not suit the scenes added to the movie. It wasn’t that epic and I found it a waste of time to purchase it or download it on my MP3 Player and the 20th Century Fox Title was ….bland like other parts of the movie, I would rather hear the 20th Century Fox Title from X-Men: Days of Future Past and X-Men: Apocalypse. The biggest problem though was the title. That’s right, “Dark Phoenix”. Is this “Dark” Phoenix? No! This is not dark or deserved to be R-Rated (despite the blood), there’s Jessica Chastain and her demons to ruin the title. Jean Grey is a good guy and used her powers for good from the train sequence. Overall, this IS the finale of X-Men that we should say good bye to these characters (poor Tye Sheridan and Sophie Turner, just 2 movies) and it turned out to be a big failure. Yes, this movie is a disappointing finale but there’s also a new movie called “The New Mutants” and I bet it would be rated R like Logan, Deadpool 1 and 2 just because I saw the trailer which looked like a horror movie (it reminded me of Brightburn).

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I will not say this film is the worst of X series, in my humble opinion "Apocalypse" still the worst, I enjoyed visually but the story messed my mind especially when Raven killed!! How she appeared in old versions as a Rebecca Romijn!! Are they planning to produce X-Men: Endgame in the future!? I just feel that "Dark Phoenix" not related to X series.

In addition, I felt I was watching a "Captain Marvel" but with a different story, where Jean has almost the same power of Captain Marvel and the way that she gets the power it's almost same.

On the whole, it's a good movie, but just stop to think a little deeper and thousands of mistakes arise. Although it has incredible visual effects, it is a terrible outcome for the X-men.

There were scenes that were really executed well and then other times I’m wondering what they are trying to accomplish in this movie. It balances out. The good is good, the bad is bad.

You will now look at "The Last Stand" as fondly as we look at 'X-Men: Days of Future Past' (2014), because "Dark Phoenix" is a bland, boring and as I said, forgettable entry into this once invincible franchise. A good and talented cast goes to waste with a flat screenplay, some horrible pacing and moments of unintentional hilarity. The movie starts off where we see Jean Grey as a child, for some reason, struggling to cope with adapting to her powers, everything around her is too loud and she seems to react by using her telepathy powers to lift any object and thrash them towards others where they could potentially be hurt or killed. Professor Charles Xavier (James McAvoy) decides to take her in and possibly teach her how to concentrate and use her powers for better use instead of harm and death. We see that the group of "X-Men", including; Mystique (a rather bored looking Jennifer Lawrence), Beast (also bored Nicholas Hoult), Quicksilver (Evan Peters, actually trying), Nightcrawler (Kodi Smit-McPhee), Storm (Alexandra Shipp), Cyclops (Tye Sheridan) and Jean (Sophie Turner). Something goes wrong during their space mission (when does anything ever go right in a superhero movie space mission?) and it seems that Jean has encountered a strange power source which has made her more dangerous than before. The rest of the gang try to get a better understanding of this, but are unable to figure out what is wrong. It also seems that Xavier finally got the respect from the public he's always wanted, with the public always cheering for mutants to save the day and sort out many problems. Jessica Chastain is in this movie. Why? Not sure, she's in it, and she's wasted, that's all you need to know. Magneto (Michael Fassbender) returns as well, and even Fassbender's performance can't save himself from drowning in a dull movie. Not only written by Simon Kinberg (who also wrote "The Last Stand", but redeemed himself writing "Days of Future Past") takes his directorial feature film debut here. It's not a bad effort, the special effects look nice, and he seems to handle it okay, but one can't help but wonder if it was handled by someone with big-budget blockbuster experience and we would get a much better film. The film just feels extremely underwhelming, and the middle portion of it is frustratingly slow-paced and rather boring. It doesn't feel like a big finale or a big send-off. They should have left that to either 'X-Men: Days of Future Past' (2014) or 'Logan' (2017), this falls flat. It's the kind of film you'd put on in the background while doing some work, and it's the kind of film you'll forget you even saw. You'll look at your movie calendar in shock and say; "Oh, 'Shazam!' and 'Avengers: Endgame' were released the same year as this?", it's not worth wasting a rather short 1 hour and 52 minutes on, even the movie itself wants to be over and done with. There is no post-credits scene, just get up and leave, or don't see it at all. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The acting is great, this probably has the best Scott/Jean dynamic in all of the X-Men films, and there are some interesting ideas in the film. In the hands of the right writer, this might have been a good film. If parts of it hadn't needed to be rewritten and reshot, this might have been a good film. However, what we ended up with is a bunch of scenes that do tell a story, but not a very deep one. And, hey, sometimes films don't have to be deep to be enjoyable. However, this movie is also trying to tackle some of the moral complexities of the Dark Phoenix Saga. Namely, should Jean, who has been possessed by this force, be held accountable for the events that take place. And there's no real debate about this in the movie. Some think she can be saved. Others want to kill her, until they suddenly don't. And the intent is that they're convinced to save her because of Charles' speech, and it would make sense if Charles had mentioned that Jean was possessed or that she accidentally killed Raven, except he doesn't do any of that. They listen to him because it's the Third Act and the writers need everyone to band together to fight the evil aliens that exist in this film. The X-Men are supposed to be the ones who want to protect all life, except in the Second Act where they have no problems with people becoming collateral damage. What Nightcrawler does in the Third Act completely flies in the face of the Nightcrawler character. And Jean's big hero moment basically involves mass genocide, which is ironic because in the Dark Phoenix Saga Jean was on trial for her life because she committed genocide. By the end of the film, I was numb. I honestly feel that this movie would've killed the franchise, had it not been for the fact that the franchise died when Disney bought Fox. This is such a disappointing end. Expand

Didn't we see this boring stuff somewhere before? Only in the last half hour or so do things start to pick up. The heroes get to shine but that doesn't excuse the rest of the movie which is too slow and frankly quite boring.

The CGI is good and I can see no fault in the acting, even if I must admit to missing Halle Berry as Storm. The film just feels underwhelming as a whole. I can't recommend it. It may be the blandest entry in the whole series. So not what I had hoped for, but here it is.

I just watched The Last Stand again and it was definitely better than this, a lot better actually. I'm changing my rating to a 4. If last stand is a 6 then Dark Phoenix really isn't worth a 5, so disappointing.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Compared to X-Men: The Last Stand, this movie failed in many respects to even match that movie, let alone bring the Phoenix saga properly to screen. For a film that heavily focuses on Jean Grey, I feel that it is too soon for Sophie Turner to get to this watershed moment of the character's history. We only knew her as a secondary character in Apocalypse, and now we jump to this.

The movie took way too many liberties in retcons and character assassinations that I am not sure this is either in the Singer timeline or Logan timeline. Professor X, in spite of having seen the effects of controlling the monster or trauma within Jean's mind that will eventually lead to his death, proceeds to do the same to an 8-year old Jean when her powers directly lead to the death of her mother, and caused the father to be so resentful that she was cast out to Xavier. Xavier tried to spare her the pain, suppressed that part of her life and told her her father is dead. This same Xavier, who was taught by his future self to embrace pain and empathy as the source of his power, completely forgot that lesson with Jean. SMH

Phoenix Force is retconned to be extraterrestrial (even though in the OT and Apocalypse it is implied to be Jean's latent power). But it does not have a will of its own. Instead, when Jean absorbs it, she became emotionally disturbed, and yet a more powerful psychic than Charles in Cerebro. She found out the deception, went to find daddy, read his mind and was upset and becomes more disturbed. Fight with X-Men lead to Mystique's death.

Here is where two glaring issues with the movie arise. First, conflict is manufactured. X3 was at least justified in that the Phoenix personality was all rage, and her target was Xavier who caged her in Jean's mind. She has a vendetta with Xavier and anyone she perceives to try to cage her again. Justified. In this movie, Jean's target of rage was daddy and Xavier. Being a more powerful telepath, she saw in both their minds how the discussion of sending her off to Xavier's came. The problem is that the reveal suffers like the narrative of Luke trying to murder Kylo Ren in The Last Jedi; unreliable narrator. Except Jean stopped when she saw daddy cast her off WITHOUT seeing Xavier's response. This led to said fight and death of Mystique. Last Jedi was justified in that the reveal was oral; here the reveal is completely in Jean's control. If she played the memory a bit further, this whole conflict could have been resolved. And remember, she is only disturbed in so far as someone who just received the news of their parents' death; she is not psychotic or vengeful to try to kill either targets of her grief. The larger issue is that, until the third act fight, Jean stays in this angsty mode. Kudos to Sophie for being able to play this emotional facet competently, but when she wants to kill someone, I'm sorry but I am not buying it. She is not Famke's Xenia Onnatopp goddess level of a psychotic murderer.

Second, this movie's main casualty, Mystique, only affects Beast and Magneto. Yeah, Jean is shocked to have caused her death, but I have no idea how she is connected to Mystique any deeper than she is to Xavier and Scott. Both are alive at the end. X3 did a passable job in raising the stakes by killing the father figure (Xavier) and lover (Scott) to show how Jean/Phoenix is turning to villainy. But here, Jean will always be the tragic character, never fully villainous despite not having a split personality to "justify" the murder.

Ironic that in this SJW climate, the movie wants us to have sympathy to Jean by playing the stereotype of women being weak, emotional creatures. Jean's conflict is completely her doing, and it is never shown how she got over this character flaw of jumping to conclusions. That climax where she wants to protect "her family" is not an organic flow; even when she went with white-haired alien woman antagonist it is more to solve her Phoenix problem rather than having any real world domination or vengeful motivations. Oh yes, the alien antagonists. Forgettable ancillary characters. Ironic that for a movie shy in killing its main cast, it is actually very PG bloody. Previously Magneto and Wolverine would actively kill villains, but the climactic train fight has everyone go full lethal. Nightcrawler in particular, having Heroic BSOD, when on a killing spree of these aliens, whom we audience are told are the last of their kind. Our heroes, participating in genocide masked as self-defence. Overall, this movie can only be seen if you are willing to endure character assassinations, retcons, ridiculous conflicts and weak motivations. Even the action is very tame. Until the finale, we have very little physical demonstration of the Phoenix power (a world-destroying one that got the aliens), compared to what Magneto did in Apocalypse.

The X-Men have always been my favorite group of superheroes. From any publisher. Together with Batman they were the first comic books I started reading as a kid and I always loved their stories and loved the characters.

But cinema has never done them justice. I'm sorry but it's true.
Beyond the love I have for the first two films and the committed work of Hugh Jackman as Wolverine, cinema has never done them justice. And I will not say anything about all the plotting and the narrative lines that Fox made, after all they're already a lost issue and beyond the results of the franchise, cinema has never done them justice.

Needless to say that considering the fact that The X-Men now belong again to Marvel, a certain part of me feels satisfaction in knowing that the characters will finally have a better representation. Or at least I want to believe that.

According to Kevin Feige, it's still a long time before we see them in the MCU and that's fine. They should give people time to get the idea that the franchise will be rebuilt. After all, it was 19 years under Fox's tutelage and the studio unfortunately had as a swan song this empty film.
And I do think this film will be the ending for Fox because I doubt that New Mutants will be released. And it's sad that they ended up adapting once again the story of Dark Phoenix and they **** it up again. I mean with all the good stories from the characters, they chose that one again?

Without inspiration, without imagination, without drama and with little action. Predictable, yes, even if you don't believe it.
The narrative is empty. There's no catharsis or more emotion. Not even in the final act and especially after having revealed that important death in the trailers. Even from there they **** things up.

The timeline is ridiculous. Another ten years have passed since Apocalypse and everyone is still the same. A lot of credit for most of the characters since for some 30 years passed and for others 20 between films and nobody aged a single day.

What a sad farewell on behalf of Fox and these X-Men with whom I was never happy. Let's see what their new film future holds because there's nothing left for them here.

* From the new cast the only one who I would rescue for the MCU would be Michael Fassbender. I know it will not happen, but I would have liked to continue having it as Magneto.

I'm a huge fan of the X-Men and have been for ages, but it's so sad to see the series end on such a disappointing note. I've been defending this series for ages as nearly all the films are great, but I find it hard to look for any big positives in the film. There were some terrible one-liners in the film but apart from them, the acting was mostly good, but apart from that and maybe the first act, the film was very flat. There weren't any bits where I thought "Omg this is the worst f#cking thing" but there weren't any moments where I was like "This is amazing". There was just so much, and yet so little going on at the same time.
I could go on for hours about my back and forth opinion on the film, but if I could try and sum it up in a few words it, they would be anticlimactic, rushed and lacking backstory and motive. Still, definitely not the worst I've seen.

Without going into spoilers, I can't really say much except that the action was great from sequence to sequence, Quicksilver was actually pretty good when he was being a full-on hero without being confined in the X-Mansion, and the third act of the film put a smile on my face, finally. Everyone in the third act had their moment and their time to really shine with their power and it paid off then. That doesn't make up for the other two-thirds of the film that were just abysmal. Professor Xavier was horrible in this and the writers clearly wrote him off polar opposite of what he is supposed to be in the X-Men movies. The acting, in general, wasn't bad at all and I admire the cast for doing their best with the script they were given. But everything else just fell so flat for me. Due to the production issues, multiple delays and a Disney/Fox Acquisition, 'Dark Phoenix' just fails to fly up to expectations. Expand

It's doing the same thing over and over again expecting something to change. Only 13 years after their first attempt to do a film of the Phoenix saga, Fox hired Simon Kinberg, the same writer who previously adapted the story for X-men Last Stand, to do another take on the story and also that he should helm the film in his directorial debut. Unsurprisingly, we've gotten another failed attempt at doing the story justice and an unsatisfying conclusion to a franchise which has been evolving for 19 years.

The X-men franchise has never been the best at maintaining a clear continuity, but this time it feels like we've missed entire films that would be required to fill the gaps in between this and Apocalypse. There's almost a 30 year gap between this film and First Class, but our leads haven't even aged a decade. Jean and Cyclops went from getting to know each other in the previous film to being in love at the start of the film. Magneto has apparently been forgiven for nearly killing everyone (several times), has given up on his grudge against humanity and set up the island of Genosha as a safe haven for mutants. And at some point Xavier has pretty much ended the prejudice towards mutants and his X-men, being in direct communication with the President and being sent out to complete missions as a sign of the newfound peace between humanity and mutants.

Whilst they're out on one of these missions, Jean comes into contact with a mysterious alien force giving her the powers of the Phoenix. You may be wondering how this connects with the previous film where she's shown briefly wielding these powers, but just like the Mister Sinister tease at the end of Apocalypse this is never explained.

After taking on these powers, Jean begins to become corrupted by her power and losing control putting all those around her in great danger. This is certainly an improvement over Last Stand, with the inclusion of the alien presence being a somewhat more loyal take on the source material and a strong performance from Turner showing us Jeans inner conflict battling her increasing insanity caused by the powers of the Phoenix.

But even with this focus on Jean, we never get the emotional resonance the story requires, in large part due to the lack of build up to such a major storyline in the previous films. The original Phoenix story from the comics was so effective was because the characters were developed across years of storytelling. But we've only known this version of Jean from one other movie where she was only ever a supporting character. Just like Last Stand before it, the film is rushing to these massive story moments without ever laying down the groundwork for us to feel connected to Jean to begin with.

Everyone else in the film just feels like they're all on autopilot, just going through the motions of the story and not offering anything interesting or that we haven't seen before from previous films. Though this is not tho the fault of the actors, who mostly do the best with the material given. Instead it's more due to the screenplay, which is more focused on moving the story forwards and never spends enough time allowing the characters to react to everything happening on screen. We never even get another creative bullet-time set piece from Quicksilver, in spite of these being high points of the previous two films. Instead he gets sidelined along with Storm and Nightcrawler who are never really given anything to do.

Though the films greatest mistake is simply how boring it is. Last Stand was a cluttered mess, but at least it had memorable moments such as Magneto moving the Golden Gate Bridge, Wolverines final confrontation with Jean and the film still felt conclusive. In contrast this film has no re-watch value and never feels climactic. Instead it just feels like a tacked on attempt Fox made to add a last film to the franchise before being absorbed by Disney to join the MCU. At least we still have Logan to provide us with some real closure for this franchise.

A superhero movie franchise that preceded all in the Marvel universe. It all began at the start of the new millennium with Bryan Singer's X-Men. The success of X-Men gave rise to sequels, prequels and spinoffs for the big and small screen alike.

After Fox conveniently reset the X-Men universe in Days of Future Past, they were in the clear to adapt the Dark Phoenix storyline yet again with focus on the cosmic origins of the force. Simon Kinberg (scribe for many X-Men movies) makes his directorial debut with Dark Phoenix and yes he definitely makes one hell of a mess. Dark Phoenix boasts of a stellar cast, but they are limited in what they are given to do. Sophie Turner does make a compelling Jean Grey/Phoenix. She is clearly the best thing about the movie. James McAvoy's Professor X is convincing enough. Michael Fassbender, Tye Sheridan, Nicholas Hoult & Jennifer Lawrence are as good as the props on set (they serve their purpose). Jessica Chastain is worse than Malekith from Thor: The Dark World. There are no dimensions to this villain.

But to be honest, Dark Phoenix is way better than the **** excuse for a movie called X-Men: Apocalypse. I still wonder why Apocalypse was better recieved than Dark Phoenix. A movie that killed the most powerful being in the Marvel Universe in an instant! The X-Men franchise deserved a better finale especially for a franchise that is two decades old. Fox never thought big. They had both the X-Men & Fantastic Four but they messed them up. It's very sad to see this franchise bite the dust in such a sad & pathetic manner. Hopefully, the MCU handles these properties better.

Dark Phoenix is the first Fox-Marvel movie to be distributed by Walt Disney Studios (post acquisition). New Mutants would be the last movie in the X-Men series that began at Fox. It will release in 2020.

This character-driven superhero tale is somewhat overwritten when it comes to exploring (and frequently misinterpreting) motivations, incorporating contemporary social issue symbolism, and getting in touch with feelings, so much so that it tends to drag in the first half. The opening also gives surprisingly short shrift to the action-adventure elements, a shortcoming that's fortunately made up for at the back end. However, when it comes to the story's philosophical/metaphysical themes, the picture is spot-on, providing thoughtful viewing yet again in an unlikely context. In all, this release may not match its predecessors, but it does share valuable insights worth pondering in a well-acted, beautifully photographed package. Expand

There is very little to remember about this movie and again this is disappointing to say when these X-Men movies from Fox usually have a rich storyline look at First Class or Days of Future past amazing storytelling even Apocalypse which was just an okay movie had a decent storyline. The story was just not interesting and compelling enough, it was just so mediocre and forgettable.

There was with weird plot thread though involving Charles Xavier that I wasn’t buying at all. Without saying too much the plot point was about Charles Xavier was always the bad guy in these X-Men movies and he has a massive ego that puts everyone in danger, to be fair there were moments in the movie that made you consider that a bit but when you think of the Past X-Men movies and all he has done for the X-Men it just makes zero sense, I’m all for character evolutions but this “twist” they were going for didn’t work and almost contradicted the story involving Charles in other movies. Also the performances, I really can’t say much about the performances which again is disappointing because the cast in this movie is really good there were great performances from James McAvoy(Charles Xavier) and Micheal Fassbender(Magneto) in all X-Men movies they were involved in ,but here they just gave okay performances like there isn’t one scene were I can recall an outstanding performance from anyone from the cast members. The X-Men were fine,Mystique was just there and Quicksilver was wasted, the best part about the recent X-Men movies was wasted, well done movie.

The villains were bad and I don’t mean Jean Grey I mean the actual villains that were in this movie were extremely forgettable there was a particular motivation for the villains but it was never expanded on and the villains fell very flat, Jessica Chastain who played one of the villains gave a very bleak performance with was supposed to make the villains menacing and cold but came off as dry and the movie didn’t seem explore all the necessary features of these villains for them to be interesting or compelling.

Okay the stuff I liked was the action in the closing 2nd and last act was good, I usually don’t recall the First Class series for its action scenes but Dark Phoenix had really good actions scenes and probably some of the best action scenes in all of the X-Men movies, almost every one of the X-Men that were involved in the fight scenes looked cool I have never seen Cyclops in a good action scenes in these X-Men movies but Dark Phoenix did it also Storm looked cool and Magneto always does something impressive in these movies. Also the music was decent as well, Hans Zimmer who composed the music did a fine job with the theme music especially some of the action.I know I said there wasn’t an overall great performance from Dark Phoenix but there wasn’t any terrible one either and Charles Xavier was the most compelling character of all of the characters with the story involved.

Lets talk about Jean Grey or Phoenix who the story is based on, this time they tried again and they just can’t seem to get this Phoenix story right. the story is not too different from X-Men 3 Except dark Phoenix is centered around Jean this time and there are no subplots like in X-Men 3 to slow down the plot. Sophie Turner did the best she could with the story that was there this Jean unlike in X-Men 3 didn’t have a split personality where by there was a good Jean and an Evil Jean, Dark Phoenix’s Jean was more overwhelmed with all the powers she had and didn’t know how to control her powers so and this lead to her freaking out most of the time and losing control of herself and her powers, was this the best way to reintroduce the Dark Phoenix story, no not at all. However the Jean Grey character had a very cool showcase of her powers at end of the movie.

The First act was decent it introduced the characters nicely and the plot quickly but after that the movie was just slow and dry especially in the 2nd act were the villains started to show up but didn’t really improve much then the third act with was the best part of the movie with exciting action and the epic moments that were supposed to happen as well as dramatic moments fell flat as well.

Look did i think this movie was bad , no it’s not bad at all it’s not Fan4stic or Batman and Robin but at this stage this type of movie isn’t good enough Fox hasn’t made a really good X-Men movie until Days of Future Past(excluding Logan), Apocalypse was okay and Dark Phoenix is just so mediocre and rather lazy. If this is the last X-Men movie with this cast then I’m really glad Fist Class and Days of Future Past were made but Dark Phoenix was not the end I had hoped for.

Okay, maybe I'm laying it on a bit thick. (I really wanted to say the line.) Dark Phoenix is a movie that is not particularly bad or good.

There are several plot issues. The movie tries to get away from the more action-oriented and not well critically received X-Men: Apocalypse by being more dialogue and story heavy. This leaves a lot of long scenes of talking that aren't particularly dynamic. Not to mention that the action scenes are too few and far apart. Other plot problems include: Characters make decisions that fit the plot more than feel natural. The villains, beside Dark Phoenix (Game of Thrones' Sophie Turner), just feel really wedged in without any personality. There is also a scene with them at the beginning that is the darkest and of the franchise and felt like it didn't need to go that far. An issue in the film is resolved without any real explanation.

It may be obvious at this point, but there are the two prerequisite issues that everyone has mentioned: 1) Conflicts with the time line of the other films. The last film suggested and The Last Stand stated that Jean Grey's Phoenix powers came from within, but now they come from an outside force. 2) Nicholas Hoult, James McAvoy, and Michael Fassbender needed at least a little old age makeup. We were first introduced to the characters in the 1960's and now it's the 90's. Hoult's baby-face really doesn't help.

A lot of actors sleepwalk through their roles. In the case of Hoult and Kodi Smit-McPhee, they only seem to be energized when their characters are angry. Though more effort is made to focus on the individual X-Men, some of them still don't get to do much.

As for the parts that do work: You get to see the characters go into space. The current state of human-mutant relations has made an interesting change, and that part of the world steels feel like it has stakes after all these films. Character relations are improved from Age of Apocalypse.

Turner, McAvoy, and Fassbender are the only actors to give good performances. Since we only met the new Jean Grey/Phoenix (Turner) in the last film, I was worried that they didn't have enough to adequately and sympathetically to show her shift from an enemy to a threat in a short amount of time. However, Turner really sells the role. We really feel her pain and anger. We get to see more moral grayness to McAvoy's Professor Xavier. In the last film, I thought Fassbender's Magneto felt forced in. Even if he did have the best scene in the film. Here he works a lot better.

No complaints about the fight scenes. Excellently done. The general look and music are pretty good too.

I'd rank this above Wolverine: X-Men Origins and below the other films. I know a lot of critics are saying this is better than it's predecessor, but for me Apocalypse at least had energy to it. This film just feels languid. If you're an X-Men completionist, go right ahead. This isn't a stinker. However for everyone else, this isn't a must-see.

Nothing wrong with its cast though, as they brought their A game into the proceedings. Despite the excellent first 15 minutes, the flick meanders and ends up retreading the same story points as Last Stand, albeit remixed..sometimes for the worst. Having the third act reshot is another nail in the coffin. Despite some pretty good action set pieces, the whole film is underwhelming. Writer Director Simon Kinberg actually took responsibility for this film flopping in the cinemas, and I have to agree with him. He brought absolutely nothing new to the table. The fact that the head honchos at Fox would gave him $200 million for this 'reboot / remake' is mind boggling. This sort of decision making is probably why Fox is swallowed by the Disney juggernaut. Let's see what Feige and Co. will do to this property in the MCU. Expand

Dark Phoenix is a disappointing end to 20th Century Fox's X-Men movie franchise.

I really like the MacAvoy/Fassbender-led series of movies (even Apocalypse), but Dark Phoenix is a let down. They tried so hard to adapt the Dark Phoenix saga (which was ruined in 2005's The Last Stand) that they produced a boring movie. I always thought Sophie Turner was miscast as Jean Gray and this movie proves my point. The Genosha island finally appears in a movie but it amounts to nothing. The D'Bari aliens appearing in the movie are of little importance. In contrast with reviews though, I didn't find the actors' performances as soulless or bad. It was just a troubled project from beginning to end, so much that the film's entire 3rd act had to be reshot. Blame it all to an inexperienced director debuting with a big production and messing it up. Dark Phoenix isn't as bad as reviewers say, but it's no good either.

Farewell to McAvoy, Fassbender and Co. as the X-Men franchise returns to Marvel. But it will be years before the new X-Men appear in the MCU.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Second watch: Dark Phoenix is an average movie. The story approached the alien perspective in a very robotic manner. There is almost no real feelings of the relation of Jean Grey with the other X-Men. It makes all the emotions a very bland affair because of the structure in the story. And you abandon Quicksilver at 1/3 into the movie with barely no explanation ? What a bad move! The death of Raven completely falls flat and is a copy of Logan's death (thank you for the originality). It was presented in a very casual way and felt so forced. They exploited the main character of this movie very poorly and because of that, the main actress doesn't have any range into her character. The humor is just gone. Virtually no jokes in this movie. The soundtrack was made for another movie. It's a mix of Annihilation and Interstellar, and it just don't fit into this movie. It is extremely distracting. And the incessant music kills this movie. There is virtually no pauses to the long succession of tunes. Until the music stop (once, in a New York scene with professor X), the movie become more interesting. The fight in the ending with the train and aliens is quite amazing. And the FX are well done in general. I give it a 48%. There was a promising story somewhere but not within this structure. The story and the film seems like a resume of many seasons of a TV shows. And this is frustrating...I felt like they scrapped half the movie, and shorthanded a lot of things. Expand

So, even without knowing much about the characters or their fictional stories, I decided to watch the X-Men franchise films. This decision was followed by some reading about the characters and the films. I tried to follow more or less the chronological sequence of events starting with prequels.

This film is set in 1992 and begins with a call from the US President to help the space shuttle, in serious difficulties on a routine mission. During this X-Men operation, Jean Gray is caught in the middle of a strange cosmic storm that luckily does not kill her. Back on Earth, Jean will gradually develop feelings of confusion and unrestrained inner anger that quickly concern everyone, especially Xavier, who, in the face of the facts, decides to reveal her family origins, the way she caused her mother's death and how her father abdicated from her. Lost, enraged, feeling cheated and betrayed by all those she trusted, Jean sets out on a lonely search for herself, eventually finding her own dark side.

Bryan Singer's departure allowed Simon Kinberg to assume the director's chair and the screenwriter's pen. However, the loss of quality is so remarkable that I cannot consider this switch positive. Anyway, the bad box office results and the brouhaha among specialized critics underline my opinion. The film has a pleasant pace and was well mixed and edited, but it disappoints us because of its uninteresting, unrealistic and uninspired script, which seems to fetch some elements from older films like "Last Stand" and "Origins" instead of giving us really new stuff. With no sense of humor, the film has less action than the previous ones, despite being well done and truly intense. It also has endless loads of clichés and melodrama, with some sentences worthy of a Mexican or Brazilian soap opera. Dialogues are truly mediocre and have some expendable moments of pure political correctness, like that sentence from Raven saying, with some sarcasm, that Xavier should change the team's name to "X-Woman" given the weight of women there. Personally, I never found the cosmic cloud story credible and that, for me, damaged the plot and the way how I adhered to it, including the final scenes, too over the top.

The cast is massively inherited from previous films and is composed of great actors, however the characters do not have the soul and profoundness they have had so far. James McAvoy is good, but doesn't seem to handle with the gray areas of his character's personality; Michael Fassbender is just average. Sophie Turner gave life to the protagonist, Jean Gray, but she was so dramatic that she sounds horribly bad all the time. Jennifer Lawrence did a positive job but was quickly put aside. Tye Sheridan couldn't have sounded more boring. The villain, Jessica Chastain, a very threatening and cold metamorph, never wins our attention and fear. The film also features ephemeral or uninteresting appearances by Evan Peters, Alexandra Shipp, Nicholas Hoult and Scott Shepherd.

In addition to these merits, the film has production values that should be highlighted. It's a Marvel movie and there are millions of dollars involved. It has a well done cinematography and decent editing, in addition to the best visual, sound and CGI effects that money could buy, and that transform some scenes into real video games: visually incredible but without any soul or sense of danger or emotion. As happened almost always in this franchise, the film has good sets and costumes. I think it is fair to also greet the makeup department and the soundtrack.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Pros: -Really solid score.
-Some good acting bits such as during Beast’s conversation with Charles after Raven’s funeral for example.
-The final battle is admittedly pretty awesome.
-I really liked how they portrayed Scott and Jean’s relationship.

Cons:
-Magneto makes a lot of dumb desicions in this movie and Fassbender, while he does have some good scenes, is clearly only here for a paycheck.
-Mystique’s makeup is jarringly worse than in previous films.
-The opening scene alone has so many unanswered questions, like how does just attaching a rocket to the X-Jet allow it to go into space? Why can Jean breathe in space? Why is duct taping a space helmet to Nightcrawler’s head enough to allow him to breathe in space?
-Vuk is not a very compelling villain. -Jean herself feels unfocused, going from scared and afraid of what her powers might do in one scene to violent sociopath in the next.
-Professor X’s arc of getting over an ego he doesn’t have feels forced and was likely only added so James McAvoy could have more screen time seeing as he is the biggest name in the whole cast.
-After Jean kills Raven, Quicksilver is noticeably absent for the rest of the movie. I know he was injured in the fight, but it still feels like the writers just forgot about him.
-“X-Women”. I don’t even need to say anything else. That line was so forced it’s cringeworthy.
-You can tell the D'Bari were supposed to be Skrull’s but were changed late into production because of Captain Marvel using the Skrull’s.

Final Verdict: Dark Phoenix had some good moments, but it just has too many problems holding it back and since the next X-Men movie is going to be a reboot set in the MCU due to Disney acquiring Fox, there is honestly no reason to see this with how mediocre it is. A disappointingly weak ending to the Fox X-Men film franchise.

For the twelfth instalment in Fox’s X-Men series, Dark Phoenix is the second adaptation of Dark Phoenix Saga after 2006’s X-Men: The Last Stand. The difference between these two movies is this movie is set in the new timeline (due to the events of 2014’s X-Men: Days of Future Past) while X-Men: The Last Stand was set in the original timeline. Due to the merger between Disney and Fox, this is officially the final X-Men movie but not the final movie in the franchise.

In the year of 1992, the X-Men are now recognised as heroes due to their heroic actions nine years ago during the events of X-Men: Apocalypse. The X-Men are sent to a rescue mission in space to save a group of astronauts whose space shuttle was damage by some kind of solar-like energy. They successfully rescue the astronauts but Jean Grey (Turner) is struck by the energy and absorb it to protect the X-Men’s space shuttle.

Thankfully, they are able to rescue Jean but her psychic powers have slowly grown strong after the rescue mission. As a result of her growing power, she accidently hurt her teammates and the other students during a party. She also regains her past memories that have been hidden from her. She goes to her childhood home to confront her father for some answers.

Fear of her new power and discovering the truth, Professor Charles Xavier (McAvoy) accompany the X-Men to confront her before she causes any trouble which may ruin the reputation of mutants. Meanwhile, Vuk (Chastain), who is the leader of a shape-shifting called D’Bari, is targeting Jean to steal the energy within her for her own unknown purposes.

The second attempt to adapt the Dark Phoenix Saga by Fox is once again a failure. Why is it failure? First, the plot of the movie is very badly written and seriously lacks character developments especially the main villain and the protagonists. Some of the well-known characters such as Cyclops and Storm lack screen time and they do not do anything much to develop the plot.

In addition to plot, the infamous continuity errors of this franchise continue to show up in this movie. If you have seen X-Men: Days of Future Past and Deadpool 2, you will notice the errors right away. It makes me wonder if the director or writers even watch the previous instalments before making this movie. The only good thing about this movie is the performance of Sophie Turner, James McAvoy, Michael Fassbender, Nicholas Hoult and the rest of the cast. However, their performances are not enough to save the quality of the movie.

If you think X-Men: The Last Stand is bad, then Dark Phoenix is way worse. It is very plain boring and nothing too exciting like the previous X-Men movies. As the final X-Men movie, the ending is rather anticlimactic and does not really deliver a perfect conclusion like 2017’s Logan. Now that Disney/Marvel regained the movie rights to X-Men and Deadpool including Fantastic Four, you got to wait for few years before X-Men ever show up again on the big screen.

I had seen somewhat mixed opinions of this movie and none of them were really that great so I had some doubts about it. Anyway, the other day I sat down with the kids and watched it.

Far from the greatest X-Men movie but it’s not that bad either. It’s okayish.

The story is fairly decent and, as usual, the special effects (which is really why I watch these movies) is quite good actually. The characters are doing a decent enough job of their roles although none of them are really up to the standard Patrick Stewart brought to the franchise.

The biggest gripe I have with the movie is it’s incessant whining. Jean is quite cool when she get’s pissed off and shows off her powers pretty much stopping anything that gets thrown at her. However those good moments are overshadowed by both her and other characters going into whining mode every so often. And Hank is just a bloody annoying ****

I haven’t really read that many X-Men comics (didn’t have them in Sweden when I grew up) so I cannot say I know much about Jean’s real story in those. I noticed that a lot of people complained about the story in the movie not being “the right” one. Sure, when they take a known character and remakes him for no good reason that pisses me off as well but this is NOT a one star movie by any stretch of the imagination.

Overall I cannot say that I really felt disappointed having watched it. Not exactly overjoyed either but it made for a decent enough movie evening with the kids.

Lots of action. Thin plot but I'm a sucker for X-Men movies. This would rank somewhere in the middle for me.

Just saw X-Men: Dark Phoenix it wasn't as bad as I thought it would be it was actually pretty enjoyable to watch but that could be due to my low expectations of the film (idk).

Some moments felt pretty man-bashing but I wasn't sure if that was me personally reading into them that way or if that was their intent (that x-women line was dumb for so many reasons).

Like there were **** tons of times where the men saved the women/ and other people (Logan when he went back in time etc, Quicksilver when he went to the X-Mansion to save all the students, Havok taking the blunt of the blast to save Charles, Darwin when he attempted to save Angel's dumb ass from joining Sebastian Shaw and died because of it, there are many, many more times where everyone saved each other's asses but no Mystique please only remember when the women do it because those were the only times that mattered).

But despite those few times I still did enjoy the movie and really didn't think it was that bad.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. 6.5/10. It's a decent film. Has emotional moment's and you get to connect with the characters. The film itself is small scale and grounded, which makes us feel for Jean and understand her as it is more focused on character drama but it gives it a vibe that feels as if this isn't an X-Men movie. The other X-Men are wasted in this movie. There are some good action scenes which are cleverly done and it wraps up this story for the X-MEN. The ending is quite generic and is a slight bummer due to the perfect conclusion of days of future past l. Score is great. Pacing is decent, it does feel rushed at points but this isn't hugely noticeable especially to fans. Villians aren't great and are generic but the phoenix force creates intrigue which is good to see.

Overall if your a comic book fan then I think you should see this. If you can pick up cheap tickets like discount Tuesday or 2 for 1s then it's definitely worth it

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The general plot is around the X-men when they are in their younger years like X-men young adults. The movie takes place in the early 1990’s when a young Jean Gray founds out a few surprises concerning her past & decides to leave Professor X and his X-men. Before she leaves them she starts to change while the X-men are on a mission to save a NASA crew from a solar flare thus starting down the road to becoming the Dark Phoenix. Personally I was not as impressed with this X-men movie as when compared with the other X-men movies. The story didn’t seem as good and the plot seemed pretty weird concerning the aliens who seemed to possess humans and were after Jean Gray after she starts down the road to becoming the Dark Phoenix. Micheal Fassbender was as good as Magneto and tends to be a good actor in just about any role that he does. James McAvoy was also good as Professor X and his character had a few secrets that he preferred to keep to himself. By the end I was underwhelmed and wished for my money & 2 hours of my life back. My advice is don’t pay a cent to see this movie on DVD or at the movie theater. Wait for it to come to basic cable/ Netflix or old fashioned regular antenna TV. As for your time of losing 2 hours that you won’t get back unless you do have a time machine so it is buyer be aware. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I watched this movie when I binge watched all the X-Men movies last year. I didn't understand what all the fuss was about. People seemed to really hate it, but I didn't mind it much. Recently I have begun reading the X-Men: Dark Phoenix graphic novel, and now I understand why. They should have just adapted the graphic novel into a movie and it could have easily become more successful than most MCU movies. But they those to write an original story, and that's not saying in a good way.

First of all, let's get the praise over with. The CGI and VFX of this movie are amazing. Now that I look back, it is literally the only reason why I liked this movie. The action scenes are also fun to watch. The story may be mediocre, but it's original nonetheless. They actually decided to do something new and unique. Unlike Days of the Future Past and First Class, they didn't use Wolverine for a cameo, so that's also something positive. The music was also pretty legendary. With all that said, now let's get to the critical part.

So the first problem this movie faces is the timeline. This is supposed to take place a little less than a decade before the incidents of the first movie. So the situation has to be more similar to that movie than, let's say, Apocalypse or Days of the Future Past. But here we have drastically young Charles Xavier and Magneto. Magneto has chosen to live in exile after his confrontation with the humans (don't ask which one). Mystique is with Charles and later gets killed by Dark Phoenix. So let's get this straight - Everyone aged immediately in 10 years, the government does not want to disturb mutants and then decides to target them again, Magneto goes back to being rogue and Mystique comes back to life?

Secondly the characters. Most of them looked like they were just brought for the sake of fan service, and were heavily wasted. Tell me, what did Quicksilver do in the entire movie other than yet another slow motion run in which he failed big time? Magneto was there only to be just another X-Man who will fight the bad guys (the question being what is Magneto even doing here; he wasn't in the Dark Phoenix saga). Mystique, like I mentioned, was just there to die. So was Jean's father. D'Bari replace the Hellfire Club here, even though they do almost the same thing. Charles Xavier gets whooped once again by Jean. Only Cyclops and Nightcrawler continue being themselves. Everyone else gets ruined.

Thirdly the story. Where do I begin from? This whole thing is one hige pool of mess. X-Men save the world, Jean absorbs the Dark Phoenix matter, slowly becomes Dark Phoenix, Mystique says the team should be X-Women, something something D'Bari get Jean, they attack a bank, now mutants are evil, Magneto takes Xavier's side, fighting fighting, the end. Congrats, the movie is complete. Now everyone bring your money and we will make more of these. What was the whole point of doing this? Why did they make this movie? What does it contribute to the franchise?

Personally I'm all in for the awesome CGI and cinematography. But considering this is supposed to be the last movie of the franchise, they should have done something better. Even the poster is a copy of Captain Marvel and Star Wars Episode IX. X-Men should have known when to stop. Or even better, they should have continued with a Deadpool movie series eventually separating from the main franchise. That would have been way more fun to watch than this... thing.

This movie's biggest sin is that it feels really bland considering it is the end of a 20 years long franchise...but even so, its still better than X-Men 3, Origins, and the boring mess that was Apocalypse.

Nightcrawler enters full ass-kicking mode and it's just great. Unfortunately it's a second failed attempt to faithfully bring the Dark Phoenix story to the screen. It kind of borrows from all the right places for a bit before veering off on its own. It's not that it's bad, it's just derivative at best. By the time it's over, it leaves you feeling like it should have been way more than it was. It really never hits that crescendo you would want for the franchise.

Worth watching, could have been better. Sophie Turner's accent is fine.

The saga should not have existed at all, beginning and ending with the first chapter. Once accepted the opposite decision, the plot has been dusted off many times and often with a decent conclusion, but here we are in Disney house and therefore the family movie also dominates among the X-Men: "I know what I have to do now... protect my family". Enough, it's too much.
