Pan's Labyrinth, like many, is one of my favorite movies of all time, and The Orphanage is probably one of my favorite ghost movies. Understanding that this was a different type of film, I was still hoping for a similar delivery. First of all, the plot is predictable, which would be fine if there was enough meat to the story or horror to fill the time, even if you know what the end is going to be. There was little tension, almost no mystery, and the ghosts seemed like an afterthought thrown because the plot was unable to hold its own without them. The acting was great, and the visuals were gorgeous, so if you are looking for pretty images without much substance, this film is for you. If you are looking for a rich and involving plot, with a supernatural undertone, look elsewhere. Expand

This is one of those films where the director's visual style of filmmaking upstages the story. Think of it as like 'Downton Abbey' mixed with the "Harry Potter" franchise and a hint of 'Pan's Labyrinth' (2006).

It's a pretty typical horror film, especially from someone as talented as Del Toro. You can see some of the really scary parts coming from a mile away. My only issue is that some of the CGI wasn't rendered enough and some of the creatures looked a little silly at times.

The movie stars Mia Wasikowska, Jessica Chastain, Tom Hiddleston and Charlie Hunnam, so you can expect great acting in this movie. Wasikowska's character is constantly being haunted by different ghosts and demons throughout and they tell her the same thing to be "aware of Crimson Peak".

Wasikowska then meets Hiddleston's character who wants to invent and innovate. They later get married and live in his house with his sister played by Jessica Chastain, who seems extremely eerie.

The whole film relies on suspense, and like most Del Toro films, can be deliberate in terms of pacing. Some of the scares are genuine and Del Toro crafts this expertly.

My only issue is that the story is very predictable, and at times, it can be very cliche. If you have never seen a horror film in your life, you'll probably enjoy this and will be scared by it. But if you've seen many, scarier horror films, especially from Del Toro, you'll probably be underwhelmed with this one.

Other than that, this film does contain scares, twists and beautiful production design. It is well acted and some of the images will give you nightmares. It's just...there are better, scarier films to see this October.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. In the aftermath of a family tragedy, an aspiring author is torn between love for her childhood friend and the temptation of a mysterious outsider. Trying to escape the ghosts of her past, she is swept away to a house that breathes, bleeds... and remembers.

Director Guillermo Del Toro returns with an interesting cast for Crimson Peak, his passion project, that certainly delivers on visuals and atmosphere. There are ghosts, macabre horror and jumps scares, but this is more tragic romance than anything else. Allerdale Hall, home of the Sharpe siblings, is a character in it's own right. A swirling staircase, narrow hallways, creaking floors, an exposed roof, courtyard machinery, and an elevator shaft that is central to the plot. The rooms are covered in darkness with lamps and fireplaces illuminating the dark, brownish green walls and furniture.

Unfortunately the story just isn't that interesting, beneath those luscious visuals, it doesn't really go anywhere. It's as if Del Toro and his writing partner thought of every gothic horror cliche, throwing them all into a script that perhaps was written in a day. Ir's not a grind to get through however, everything moves at a decent pace, the tone is tightly consistent throughout and the plot is easy to follow, and maybe that's what lets it down. Plenty of promise but nothing challenging for the viewer.

The characters, wether by accident or intent, come across a little dopey. Mia Wasikowska plays Edith Cushing, a wanna-be writer haunted by her dead mother who has warned her since she was a child, "Beware of Crimson Peak!" She falls for British aristocrat Sir Thomas Sharpe (Tom Hiddleston), and after the death of her father, moves in with Thomas and his sister Lucille (Jessica Chastain). Behind Edith's back, the brother and sister plan to swindle her out of her fortune. Turns out she isn't the first wife Thomas has tried to kill with poisoned tea, under the instructions of Lucille.

Charlie Hunnam plays the childhood friend to Edith, but he comes and goes without much presence. Hiddleston, although dashing as always, fails to give any life to his character. It's only Chastain and the third act that save this film, her anger exploding during a brilliant sequence of bloody stabbings and the chasing of Edith around the gothic mansion before the finale in the foggy, white snow and red clay covered courtyard.

Interestingly, Crimson Peak will divide the audience into loving or hating it, much like another recent Del Toro project, Pacific Rim. For me it edges itself into a positive score with memorable visuals albeit a predictable direction.

Whoever thinks that jump scares belong in any movie should have their head examined. They're not actually "scary" and if anything they take away from the horror.

Also the film thinks that we're morons that need to have repeats of previous dialogues told lest we become utterly confused about the plot. Less bad, but more persistently present, is the bland plot. It's weak and predictable and you pretty much see all the plot twists coming. Which again ties up with my previous complaint, that a plot this simple really does not require holding the audience's hand.

And must every movie set in the past have a Strong Independent Woman protagonist. Frankly it's getting tiring of seeing the same character in every film and, dare I say, un-diverse.

With that all said, Crimson Peak rests right in the middle where it's not bad or good enough to fall to either side. The best part is in the visuals, especially those of the ghosts which are pretty unique and, unlike the plot, do no feel like we've seen them a million times already.

The characters were very likable, which is a shame because with a better plot this could really have been a great film. Overall I enjoyed this film, but I think I'll enjoy it better next time, seeing it on a small screen.

This in addition with the saturation of good horror films in the film industries current form, there was plenty of reason to be excited for this feature.
As I wander down the aisle in my routinely fashion, picking my middle/back portion area of seating to sit in as tradition along with my large salted popcorn and vitamin water that have almost become synonymous with me and the cinema, I feel like I have foreshadowed what I could only presume would be a typical formulaic horror plot, sticking to the “contemporary” tradition. However I was wrong: and perhaps like others mislead.
First to understand, this is NOT a horror film: despite being labelled so. It is a Gothic Romance film. Secondly, it is not a ghost film, it is more of a romantic mystery with ghosts in it. Neither of these are specifically horror.
As the films sets off you can see a considerable amount of time has been put into set and costume design. Del Toro loves immersing his audience in the feeling of when his films are set like in 2006’s ‘Pan’s Labyrinth’, and that is no different here in Crimson Peak. There is also a nice mention between which the film takes its inspiration from: Wuthering Heights and The House of Mirth being the two obvious ones which can all be seen not only due to Edith’s name but by the Emily Bronte conversation on the stairwell.
The Film has its scary moments sparsely spread out over the film and so you can feel safe for the majority of the run time. They are mainly atmospheric but a few cheap jump-scares, but also a few effective ones. The cinematography of the film is eye popping and looks gorgeous, and only add to the films scares. Chastain brings a lot of the creepiness to the set – in fact more than the ghosts – as she delivers an excellent performance here as Lucille.
The acting in the film is for the best part good, Chastain being brilliant, Wasikowska doing a good job but sparring well with Chastain, and Hiddleston surprisingly being the worst. He is good in the film, but he is a step down from what the two lead actresses bring.
The film also has some gruesome violence but they are very infrequent, making them seem even more disgusting than they are. They are visceral and brutal, and you can’t help but watch on at the savagery.
The twist however in the film was for too obvious and the plot for the most part was a bit too formulaic, you could constantly see where it was going. Some clunky exposition is also given over a tape recorder which was all too convenient. The fact though that the film was advertised as a horror and not a gothic romance could however make the plot seem more interesting as people wouldn’t expect it, which is both parts an admirable and cheap marketing tactic by Del Toro.
The last act of the film takes an unexpected turn however and turns in a Danny Boyle ‘Sunshine’ movie, with the tone changing completely into a slasher flick. It feels out of place but to be honest, it is executed well and can’t be complained about too much.
All in all the film had good performances, beautiful visuals, a mediocre plot but plenty of material to chew on. A decent effort but definitely not delivering what was expected.
And let’s not forget, this film isn’t a horror.

There is plenty to love about this movie but almost just as much to dislike. Everyone knows that with Del Toro at the helm we were going to get a beautiful looking film and there is no doubt about that. The house is great and just everything about how this film looks is amazing. The performances are good too, not perfect, I think Tom Hiddleston was definitely the headliner of this cast. The real downer about this movie is the story which is also composed by Del Toro. I was really engaged in the film for the first half but the story was not consistently bold enough to grab my attention throughout the whole film and in the end I found myself a little disappointed. Finally, just in case no one has told you yet, its really not that scary either and its not even really supposed to be. Expand

"Crimson Peak" 10 Scale Rating: 5.5 (Mediocre) ...

The Good: As expected, the film was excellent visually. The tone and setting was also well done and for the first 30-45 minutes you have all the makings of a fantastic gothic ghost story. The ghosts themselves, when they do appear, were great and sufficiently creepy. I already had high expectations for the cast going into the film, and was not disappointed. Wasikowska, Chastain, Hunnam, and Hiddleston all turned in good to great performances as well as Jim Beaver, of Supernatural fame, in a small role. Hiddleston especially stood out and seemed to really get into his role, showing a lot of range.

The Bad: The film is billed as a ghost/horror story, but it isn't. The ghosts, in fact, are an afterthought and we've seen a majority of their scenes in the film's trailer. Aside from the lead character being able to see ghosts, the film itself isn't about ghosts at all and they don't really turn up all that often nor do they have much to do with the film's plot. This was disappointing, especially with such a solid initial build up. The story itself unravels halfway through, becoming mundane and uninteresting. You pretty much guess what is going on VERY early into the film and while you sit hoping there is more to it, ultimately there isn't.

The performances are as good as they can be, given the dismal script, and whilst the sets and costumes are sublime, the storyline is superficial and lacking the complexity of a truly intriguing ghost tale, with pacing that could have better managed the tension. Some truly awful post production lip-synching issues are horribly distracting, to the point I assumed they were part of the plot, and while I enjoyed watching the beautiful pictures, this is otherwise a disappointing film. 5.32/10 Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I had really high hopes for this movie. I genuinely wanted to love it because it's so rare that haunting movies come out. There are horror movies that imply hauntings, but they often depend greatly on gore. This one depended on its backgrounds.

This movie started out very promising. The scene and lines were rich enough to keep me looking and listening closely...Then that fool offered to teach everyone how to do the waltz and demonstrated the foxtrot. Was this an accident or intentional mistake in the script? I don't understand why her father didn't come back to tell her who killed him or the ghost saying, "His blood will be on your hands" if she didn't leave.

The backdrop was lovely in every scene. Even the tattered mansion had a mystery that made you want to look around for yourself. A lot of detail was given to setting scenes and making things move around the characters. I actually think the spirits were demonstrated perfectly, with odd subhuman shapes and sounds. I enjoyed watching the settings more than the characters. I did really like the sister's dark character. You don't see that often.

I can see why people would not like the movie, being that it took two hours to confirm what we knew in the first 20 minutes. The movie hinted to us that the doctor would discuss ghosts with the girl. It hinted that the siblings were aware of the spirits in their home. It showed smoke images of ghosts, but short detail about important spirits that revealed themselves as gore. There was very little anticipation other than confirming the plot for 75% of the movie. If it weren't for the scene setup, I probably wouldn't have watched the whole movie.

Now that it's over, my only fear is that there will be a part two with the girl having been impregnated when she slept with brother dearest. Then I'd have to watch that too.

Sure, it's well-directed and all the del Toro hallmarks are there: a vivid color palate, auspicious insects, intermittent shock and gore. But this is no Pan's Labyrinth. It's a romance, and like most romances, it relies on the audience believing in and caring about a central female character who has no meaningful personality or abilities, who falls for a man who does have personality and talent, who falls for her because of some reason that is never explained or even depicted. Ah, romance.

The production design is gorgeous, but I doubt any of the major cast will be remembered for their parts here. It's a costume drama, but none of them look entirely comfortable in costume. There are ghosts, but honestly, those are mostly window dressing. The other horrific elements aren't nearly horrific enough; there's way too much telling and not enough showing.

The film has its moments, but after you see it, it'll be back for waiting for the Mountains of Madness for who knows how many more years.

Ghosts are real, that much she knows.

Seen all the Del Toro films, but this one was not any good compared to his recent year's class. The film has his signature mark, the gothic style atmosphere, visually spectacular, but the story did not strike as expected. Definitely my blame is on the writing department. Though the actors were so much better in their character exhibition, especially the lead trio.

The opening convinced it will going to be a terrifying horror. Seriously? The writer brought ghosts for a concept, but ended penning a fantasy-thriller. In the middle of the narration there was too much drama that dragged the story. And in the third act it turned totally into a killer-thriller. It should have been more frightening, they wanted it to be a faulty human nature kind of twist than supernatural things. Well, they gave what they wanted, not what we the audience looking for.

I did not completely disliked the movie, I enjoyed it other than its plot. The costumes were very nice, the music well blended with the screenplay, but I was disappointed with the reason given as the motivation for all the trouble faced by character Edith. After all the hype, what it revealed was too little and too sudden with guessable stuffs. You can try it for the visuals alone than anticipating another Del Toro's masterpiece.

What few lines are meant to be sweet sound like drivel out of a bad smut novel. The film starts wonderful but falls apart once the 'move' takes place. Characters, like the plot, just sort of disappear at that point. It's illogical, the plot doesn't make sense, and a lot of the end feels rushed and a little worthless - much like the character of Thomas Sharpe - who is a bumbling fool that does a good job of convincing other people he's got some worth when he's as worthless as the crumbling manor they live in. The only reason I gave this as high a score as I did is because the sets, the cinematography, and the costumes are all lovely to look at. The plot is just completely awful. Expand

Expand

Crimson Peak

It is not easy to watch a ghost of a dead woman carrying her dead child dripping blood all over it and still despite of these horrific images, it is also filled with rich beauty in it; the candles, the horses, the fancy wardrobe clothes, everything stunning. Crimson Peak defines dedication of art love on the screen but there just isn't enough meat to rely on it and the one that feeds the film is not only predictable but seems to be stretched (especially its first act) into complicated relations just to fancy it up. Guillermo does his homework as always and fills the whole set with the finest details possible which may have left him a bit non-attentive on the whole course of it. The star cast is well formed, seems suited and does their work with all the conviction but still couldn't factor in to that level. Crimson Peak delivers justice to its genre that offers proper tone and palpable environment for the audience to be amazed and scared by it but what it lacks is a genuine reason and a proper soul.

**** bull****, nonsense as you want This film has nothing to do with horror, it's just talking, talking and talking again. Almost the whole movie I was bored and fell asleep at the end, I watched it with only one eye and I was glad that I**** bull****, nonsense as you want This film has nothing to do with horror, it's just talking, talking and talking again. Almost the whole movie I was bored and fell asleep at the end, I watched it with only one eye and I was glad that I watched it to the end. The only thing that was positive about the film was the set design, masks, effects, etc., but that's not enough when the plot and script are worth a big slipper. So my rating is 4 out of 10 and I still narrowed my eyes. Expand

For thisEdith does not feel well in the high society of New York in the early 1900s, the trauma of her deceased mother, the aspiration to be a writer and the strange hallucinations of which she is a victim make her different from the others. For this reason, when a nonconformist character such as Thomas Sharpe is revealed among the suitors, one who seems to love her for who she is, Edith has no doubts and marries him in a great hurry. Her father's death forces her to move away from New York to Crimson peak, where Thomas lives with his sister Lucille in a run-down and scary house. There Edith will encounter the reality of their relationship. The film has several flaws. Not everything works as it should and even if the themes and style are fully recognizable, the director's extraordinary imagination is still not supported by a level writing. Crimson Peak would like to play on the line between horror and melodramatic but ends up not working in either genre. Expand

Stephen King commented that the movie was "majestic and very scary", interesting. It’s true that the genre of the movie isn't just horror. However, it must be admitted that it is very difficult for many reasons to treat fear as a theme and as a theme today. In a very superficial summary; In the early examples of cinema history, themes such as religion, psychology, etc. were used as an element of fear, and it was successful. Then, with the development of technology, visual effects integrated into the world of the movies, the first time it was used, it succeeded to create a scary atmosphere, yes, but then the audience got used to it and not effected by it anymore.
In the end, neither the visual effects nor the themes could be turned into an element of horror alone. Now the success of an horror movie (if we just look at it superficially from the eye of the spectator) is able to blend each element in moderation and with a very solid plot (an example worth watching: It Follows (2014)). Also to use up-to-date elements that can directly appeal to perception.
