Very uninteresting and boring story with underutilized (though well designed) ghosts that fail to add anything to the movie that matters.

On point stylish visuals create a backdrop to a slow and uninteresting story that fails to engage as a mystery due to the villains insistence on showing the audience their nature well before they do the other characters. The audience sits around and waits for the protagonists to play catch up while ghosts occasionally appear to try and scare the audience more so than the characters but fail to do so.

The horror is rarely horrific, the mystery is not at all mysterious, and the excellent sets and visuals are wasted on this movie.

There were scenes that were presumably meant to be scary, but no emotion came through at all. The reactions from what the main character was seeing were so bland that it just made no sense at all. I had to turn this off 20 minutes before the end as I just couldn't handle any more of it. The movie looked great, but I felt nothing from it. And I am a big horror fan. Better luck next time Guillermo. Expand

The movie fails to add any actual moments of fear or absolute helplessness as it goes on. Yes it has its ups and downs as the film progresses but it never seems to find its place. Yes it has its ups and downs as the film progresses but it never seems to find its place. As for the story it felt like I've seen this movie before like I could tell what was going to happen next after each moment. The main reason I went to see the movie was because of the ghost one sees repeatedly in the ads but they also seem to have no real purpose to the movie only apperaing every few moments to frighten the protagonist. Overall I was extremely disappointed with this film entirely. Expand

For all its‘I’ve got to get out of her’ exclaims Mia Wasikowska for the third time in this hoary romantic horror, set in a creaky dilapidated mansion that is more ghastly than ghostly. ‘Haven’t we all’ I found myself muttering sarcastically. For all its beautiful gothic trappings and stunning costume design, the movie is a disappointing bore. Low on thrills but high on blood and gore, including one particularly nasty murder, the film is let down by a pedestrian story and unexceptional acting.
The much trumpeted Tom Hiddleston will have to do a lot better than this if he wishes to become one of today’s greats, and the usually reliable Jessica Chastain just doesn’t seem physically compatible in her role. She was actually scarier in ‘A Most violent year’. Mia Wasikowska fares marginally better but she doesn’t really have to do much more than turn up from scene to scene in another gorgeous frock.
Aside from the ravishing visuals in both costumes and Art-Direction, other pluses are a lush and melodic score and some impressive visual effects and make-up. Overall, though, this is a classic case of style over substance. Many scenes, especially those involving Jessica Chastain, come over as campy, eliciting many an unintentional laugh. At two hours, however, one isn’t laughing for long.

Movie is lame, boring and predictable. maybe the worst movie from Mexican director. Movie is below average. 7.5 is over rated...More like 3,5. Better watch Devil Backbone from same director.

Del Toro officially loses any and all confidence I had in him as a director as he managed to follow up the disastrous "Pacific Rim," easily one of 2013's worst movies, with yet another epic failure.

Even beautiful costumes and Charlie Hunman cannot save how ridiculous this film is.

Not scary in even the most remote sense of the word, no logic in the production design, no real logic in the narrative. Just scene after scene of eye-rolling...and thinking "Doesn't she feel she needs a sweater?"

No, it's not a horror film in the least, but it is most certainly horrific.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This director has made some of my favorite films ever so I was shocked by how laughingly bad this one is. Some reviewers claim that it is arguably weak on story but is a visual masterpiece. I would not even give it that one positive. Other than the well done cgi ghosts I found little else to recommend this very silly film.

"Edith, I know we just met but would you leave your home, marry me, sign over everything you own, and come live with me and my creepy sister in my ridiculously designed desolate mansion? Oh, and would you please ignore all of the cinematic leaves constantly floating down from the hole in the roof even though there isn't a tree within a mile of the house (I promise they will be replaced by even more cinematic snow when winter arrives)? Oh, and the bloody ghosts crawling and floating around...just ignore them and drink copious amounts of the horrible tasting tea my "loving" sister makes for you."

"Oh, dearest Thomas, everyone knows love is blind. You just waltzed into my life and no other man can hold a candle to you."

"And, dear Edith, there are areas of the house you must not enter...not because there is anything bad or incriminating in those rooms...it is just that is where I store my priceless Marvel action figure collection."

"Yes Thomas, I would never snoop!"

"And one other thing dear Edith. How do you feel about threesomes?"

"Oh Thomas, you are such a kidder!"

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Sometimes you go to a movie where most of the main characters are so unlikable that it turns you off from the movie itself. I think Crimson Peak is one such movie. Our lead character is introduced to us as a somewhat snooty debutante who is withdrawn from the world around her and seems to have no friends. The one friend and possible love interest that she could have is returning back home to start his doctor practice, He is the good looking, Charlie Hunman from Sons of Anarchy. Yet our fickled debutante rather chase her dreams as a writer than let the one man who obviously has affection for her chase her. It seems his mother thinks she is nit worthy, so that is that. Her Dad is himself rich, controlling and a bit of an pompous asshat. In steps an English inventor who charms the heroine by complimenting her writing stylings after eyeballing her manuscript after 5-10 seconds. The Dad hates the guy for some unknown reason and of course the inventor can't resist mixing business with pleasure and decides to court the debutante. Then we have the inventor's Sister who oozes hate with every scene, so we as the audience know she is going to bad news for the debutante.

I am a fan of Guillermo Del Toro's The Strain TV's best horror show, even better than Walking Dead in my opinion. In fact it is the best take on the history of the vampire ever to be told. That for me is a huge compliment since I love horror in general. So my expectations were high because Del Toro really wanted to recreate a haunted house story. The problem is this lacks emotion. The characters are not worth rooting for or even against. The house itself is falling apart, red clay is oozing from the decaying foundation, the roof has a giant hole in it at the very center of the house, and the walls are peeling. Yet there is something very cool about what you first perceive as a beautiful Gothic mansion until the camera pans above to show the falling leaves and butterflies coming from the giant opening. Unfortunately for the script the story is still about the characters - debutante, inventor and evil sister, The house is just a vessel that carries the past like a rotting diary might. We have ghastly visitations for our debutante from opening scene to final scene, but who cares? The movie fails completely to get us to care about anything. By the time it is over, you're just happy to move on to something else,
