This feels like another 'snakes on a plane'. Sadly it's neither spoofy/parody laden enough to be a comedy or take itself seriously enough to be dramatic or provide tension so it sort of sits in the middle dragging it's heels to the end. The pacing is awful with the relatively tight runtime feeling much longer (at 1hr 30 mins it felt more like 3-4 hrs!!). While this certainly isn't cinema at its best, icould see this being a fun distraction if you're just hanging with friends eating pizza and drinking beers.

However it is very funny even when people are being torn to shreds, the music in the back round is almost always a fun tune which makes it comedic. But again kind of pointless all in all. Would recommend watching but just remember that it is an incredibly stupid movie that doesn't even take itself seriously. Expand

I think my expectations for Cocaine Bear might have been a little too high. And yes, it’s a movie called Cocaine Bear, it has cocaine and it has a bear but if you expect anything more than that then yes you will be disappointed.

When a drug drop doesn’t go according to plan, leaving bags of cocaine scattered throughout a Georgia forest, everyone is in danger when a huge black bear ingests it and goes on a murderous rampage. Between the random hikers just out enjoying nature, and a group of cops and criminals desperately searching for the millions of dollars worth of drugs, there’s enough of them trekking through the forest ready to be torn to pieces by the crazed bear.

Based on the true events (and that term is used very loosely in this context) around a drug smuggling operation that went a bit off the rails when a bear ingested cocaine. Whereas the real story behind this is nowhere near interesting enough to get a 90 minute horror/comedy movie from, Elizabeth Banks decided to make a full on mental movie that requires you to suspend belief and just expect to be entertained. This is not the real story, it’s complete fiction. But unfortunately it’s not as entertaining as it should have been either. The initial hype that Cocaine Bear generated once the trailer was released is the high point for this movie but if it’s as successful at the box office as it appears to be then don’t be surprised if there’s a whole bunch of apex predator high on drugs movies down the line.

At the same time a bear is off it’s head on drugs there’s Eddie (Alden Ehrenreich) and Daveed (O’Shea Jackson Jr.) trying to find the drugs before the police. A detective trying to take down the criminal organisation run by Syd (Ray Liotta). And if that wasn’t enough, there’s also the inconvenient timing of two kids getting lost in the forest while a mother desperately searches for her daughter, plus some hikers. Once all the setup is out of the way, the bear has plenty of people to maul to death. And yes the characters are annoying enough for you to be rooting for the bear in this case. The movie certainly delivers on the gore and there’s an 18 rating for a reason. There’s guts and flying limbs everywhere. But it tried far too hard to shove subplots into it with characters that honestly it’s hard for the audience to care about. We’re just here to see a bear eat some people with a few laughs thrown into it.

Cocaine Bear is clearly drawing inspiration from other “insert animal” on the rampage type movies and sure it’s not quite Deep Blue Sea levels of bad but it sure ain’t Jaws or even The Edge either. It’s also not as funny as you’d expect, it got a few chuckles at the screening I attended but definitely not the rip-roaring laugh out loud movie the trailer painted it out to be. The story isn’t the problem, it promises a coked up bear ripping people to pieces and it delivers exactly that but the script is diabolically bad. It’s a cringe inducing, toe-curling mess. Whenever the characters are interacting with each other you end up praying for the CGI bear to reappear and give them a quick death.

If there’s one good thing about Cocaine Bear it’s gotten people into the cinemas this weekend. And at a time where cinemas are struggling, a movie like this is needed every now and again. It’s a popcorn flick that will appeal to some people. It didn’t work for me but sure I still went to see it didn’t I. Recommended for those who enjoy movies like Snakes on a Plane or Piranha 3D.

I think where "Cocaine Bear" wanders astray for me is in its efforts to sustain such a plurality of story. There's at least four different narrative tracts in play here and I really think all the juggling makes for diminished returns in each and every emotional payoff that occurs throughout. Perhaps if maybe one of these storylines was cut, we'd be able to spend more time with the other three, thus making the eventual resolutions more impactful? In any event, the maulings and gore are guiltily sufficient entertainment enough. Also, it's great to see Ray Liotta again — if, even for one of the last times. Expand

But, frankly, who cares? This delightfully campy dark comedy arguably has a few pacing and editing issues, as well as some bits that fall a little flat, but it’s generally a filling smorgasbord of over-the-top, goofy, gory fun. Director Elizabeth Banks’s third feature outing definitely won’t appeal to everyone because of its rampant silliness and its gratuitous shock value that’s more than a fitting homage to the cheesy, tacky 1980s slasher movies reminiscent of the time frame in which this fact-based true story is based. In essence, the premise is a simple one: a plane carrying an enormous stash of the powdery white substance crashes in the Chattahoochee National Forest, depositing its cargo within reach of a CGI-generated black bear who immediately becomes hooked on this find and embarks on an out-of-control murderous rampage, taking down an array of characters who have varying connections to the locale, the payload or other related considerations. And, yes, for what it’s worth, this soon becomes a one-note narrative, but the note is played differently every time it’s struck, with funny little twists and ever-more grisly (but creatively hilarious) imagery thrown in for good measure, the kind of laughs typical of cult classics and the fare of midnight shows. This offering also features fine performances by the likes of Margot Martindale, Christian Convery and the late Ray Liotta in his final screen portrayal, all of whom were good sports in recognizing the high-camp factor of this material. Look, let’s face it, drugs are often an inherently funny source of gut-busting humor (more so here literally than in many other cinematic vehicles), so just go with it on that level rather than trying to assess it otherwise – and running the risk of succumbing to the logic contained in the screeds of tiresome, droll, stick-in-the-mud naysayers (as many allegedly esteemed critics have already written about in their dour, dull, joyless, overly somber evaluations). Enjoy this one in the kitschy spirit in which it was intended – and ignore anyone who screams “just say no.” Expand

Acting is uneven and some parts of the movie are a bit slow. The bear FX are unequal too, but for most of the movie it's pretty decent, especially for all the stuff the bear does. I give it 70%. I like it for what it is: a silly/gory b movie. Expand

This movie was never meant to be master-class cinema, its purpose was to entertain. I think it did its job perfectly, I thoroughly enjoyed every moment of the movie and I would watch it again. It is the perfect movie to see with friends.

Pardon the pun. The performances, characters and humor accompanying it all, suggests that it had been written by a group of writers who mostly wrote for CBS sitcoms. The humor is all very whimsical, not the kind you'd expect from an R-rated comedy about a bear who eats cocaine. Expand

I was hoping for a comedy, but this movie was mostly stupid and not in a humorous way. The bear character was entertaining, but most of the human characters were superficial stereotypes. The bear character was entertaining, but most of the human characters were superficial stereotypes. I was rooting for the bear to kill them. Those scenes were the best part of the movie and the ambulance chase scene was the best scene in the movie. So much of modern entertainment has such abdominal characters that it’s more entertaining to root for the killer/monster. Also, modern feminists apparently believe elevating women by tearing men down is equality, but they are mistaken. That’s called bullying. They are being toxic and hateful. Instead, showing men and women working together as equals would be depicting equality and provide a healthy example for society. Expand

Some moments are laugh out loud funny and there were successful frights along the way but ultimately the script was a mess and it all sort of fell apart in the third act.

Come on, man. You are Cocaine Bear. You can go a little crazier than this, Elizabeth. And you can get funnier. I had fun here and there though. I don't know. Felt like a big waste of potential.
