This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This movie has one of the scariest monsters ever put on film. You can only briefly see him before the final scene, but when you finally see his face, well, I wanted to hide under the bed and close my eyes. He is truly hideous and alien looking, unlike, say, Godzilla, who has the most generic design ever.
But the best thing is that this terrifying monster was put in a really good movie, which is less of a monster flick and more of a chronicle of a disaster that is relentless and merciless. No one survives in this, and it is at it should be, considering the tone of the movie. This is not some Godzilla flick where people stand around and atomic bombs do nothing at all. If this type of event happened in real life, the only salvation for those who came in contact with it would be death.

I'll admit I was a big queezy with the handycam for the first 5 minutes; but the style suited it so well: finally some more experimentation since blair witch. As for the abrupt conclusion, how could people not expect it? It fit perfectly, and helped to sell it. It had great cg and special effects (especially how they fit it all in handycam settings). I found the acting was natural and sold well. Overall great movie. Expand

Once you get over the jerky camera work and get settled, the film does its best to make you feel the exact opposite, unsettled and vulnerable like the characters who are wondering what the hell is going on. You realize that there is nothing that these individuals can do to stop the rampaging destruction that has come to New York and this is reflected well in the film. Although a hero does rise its not to save the day its merely to save the life of the girl he loves. At the end your not even sure that he was successful and whether or not the sacrifices made by his family and friends were worth it. A disaster film thats believable in feeling if not in context and that isn't scared not to wrap things up too neatly at the end. Enjoyable! Expand

People mainly complain about the shaking of the camera or how "unrealistic" some parts are. Well, in my view the camera should be shakey. When you hold a little camcorder in your hand and run full tilt down the street in an attempt to get away before you get squashed, I would be astounded if the footage was as steady as a camera mounted to a tripod. As for the "unrealism" involving injuries and all, I just have one thing to say: You go see a movie about a monster wrecking a city, and you grief about the unrealistic portrayal of cell phone reception?! Sheesh. Anyway, I really enjoyed this movie. True, it didn't have first rate acting talent. But then again, I'd rather see new faces than see Brad Pitt, Angelina Jolie, Jack Black, and the slew of other actors we see too much of lately. The monster ("Clover") might not have had laser eyes or atomic firebreath, but its definitely the most bad-ass monster in recent movie history. And Clover is just a baby! Imagine what momma or pappa are like? If you get the DVD, be sure to watch the "making of" special features. The talented FX crew digitally recreated hundreds of real-life NYC buildings so that they would break and collapse just like they would in real life. Plus, if you're like me and wasn't sure what the monster really looked like, the special features include detailed models and drawings of Clover. All in all, this was a great movie, despite the minor flaws. Check it out, and I hope you won't be disappointed. Expand

It seems one is hard-wired either to be thrilled, or to be nauseated, by this movie. I'm in the happy camp. I found the intimacy of the hand-held camera effect a viseral pleasure -- as if I was walking (or running) through the movie rather than just watching it. While it's a cliche to compare a movie to a roller coaster ride, the experience was very much like the fun of a good ride. I also enjoyed the dry humor. If the idea of an elaborate amusement park ride that puts you inside a classic Godzilla-type movie sounds like fun to you, see Cloverfield. But when I read the reviews prior to seeing it, I was expecting something similar to the inane torture-porn movies that have come out as of late (Hostel, Saw 64, etc.) with emotionally stunted 20-somethings getting torn to bits. But I came out of the movie from a truly unique experience that none of the negative reviewers seemed to grasp. This is something brand new. The effects are spectacular and are grounded in real life. They are right in pointing out that the characters don't get beyond much yelling and oh-my-god-ing, but I think it's realistic. I think many people were trying to search for some kind of meaning out of it, some kind of deeper metaphor, but I actually like the fact that you are not given much information at all, it's all still a mystery after seeing it. Give it a chance, do pop some dramamine (the movie didn't effect me, but better safe than sorry) and then have fun. They are not suppose to please your every need. The shaky camera was a perfect effect on the movie, because for one, It makes us, the viewers, become more envolved with the movie, as if we were running from the monster and taping it ourselves. Sure, the first 30 minutes were not as exciting as the rest of the film. Get over it, what are they suppose to do, just put you in the middle of the attack and not explain the background of the day? The ending was a cliffhanger, and if you don't like that, then i really don't suggest this movie for you, but you should of seen it coming because one of the producers, J.J. Abrahms happens to be the king of cliffhangers. I happen to think the cliff hanger ending is perfect, It leaves it open for a sequel, which is in talks. So people that rate this movie 0's and 1's because of the cliffhanger, or shaky camera, please watch some other movies from Blockbuster, and learn to appreciate that Cloverfield has its own unique genre, which is very good. Is our generation that inept that they need to be spoon fed every detail of a movie for it to be entertaining?! This movie was supposed to evoke your imagination. Yes the camera was super shaky....I'd like to see an amateur camera person that has missiles flying all around them and a 25 story monster killing everything in sight shoot that with a steady hand. This movie is supposed to be shot from a realistic point of view. And how much more real can you get from a random bloke on the street running for his life? I would've liked a little explanation about the monster but at the same time that's what made it so exciting for me. What the f*ck was that thing? Where did it come from? It got my brain thinking of all these crazy scenarios which made it so much more fun to watch. The whole movie for me was just so real seeming. For me it completely captured the chaos and craziness that probably would've ensued had something like that happen. I loved it and wouldn't have done it any other way. Bravo. Expand

Pretty plain and simple, this is a well-made movie and gives a shockingly new style to the genre. Short but sweet, it is pretty darned rough at points but never quite "emotionally sadistic" as Salon.com ignorantly put it. I think the characters were quite sufficient given the context -- the first part I felt wasn't so much a failed attempt at character background but simply a setting of scene, effectively getting the audience ready for a complete shattering of the movie's simulated reality. Having an army guy just come in and explain the monster and how to kill it would have completely ruined the pace of the movie. But it's not a perfect movie, and I can see why people aren't crazy about it. If you're not a monster movie person (like me) it can seem shallow and empty. But for me, it was haunting. Some shots were very well set up (not bad for a no name director). I don't know what else to say. I just really liked it. No, it's not perfect. But I was impressed just the same. And having a kickass monster helps too. Expand

There is Really awesome monster movie. Can't see how anyone would have a problem with it unless they don't like monster movies in general or they are 12 years old and only want to see the monster kill people and destroy things. There is plenty enough character development so that you care about the people you see in danger and they don't do stupid things that normal people would not do (i.e., split up and separate when monsters are lurking about) and act realistically (note: when they go on their mission to find the girl they know exactly where she is although the audience misses that part of the phone message she leaves). Sure, some of the characters, especially the cameraman, are non-too-bright, but so are most people in life sad to say. The point is that none of the characters are the pathetic stupid idiots who populate most monster movies. Also, if you do watch the movie be sure to pay close attention to the closing Coney Island beach shot. If you are watching carefully you will see something occur for a split second that explains a lot. Expand

The use of the similar "cinéma vérité" and "found footage" styles are prevalent to the film's plot, as it enhances the believability of the disaster which the story is centered on. At first, I didn't think it was going to be that great of a film, as it began with a light-hearted mood, but by twenty minutes into it, once the whole disaster started to take place, I was thrilled. Also, the ending was not that great, and it left me flummoxed by how complex it was, but think of the endings to other films made in "found footage" style--especially THE LAST EXORCISM--if you may: they were the same way. Overall, I thought this was a fantastic film. To create yet another monster was a brilliant idea, and for once well-tackled. But if there's one thing about CLOVERFIELD that really goes beyond expectations, it's the cinematography and how ingeniously every action is captured--even if it's on home video. Expand

I was also someone who followed Cloverfield's viral marketing campaign being caught up in the excitement which the first teaser trailer delivered. Although I have a few complaints about a couple aspects of the movie; for me the movie more than lived up to the hype and JJ Abrams and Matt Reeves delivered a movie that was a terrifying thrill ride.

I understand that the way the movie was filmed was a deal breaker for some people. For me there were times when I did think the shakiness was a bit too much but for the majority of the film the camera technique faded into the background and I was able to enjoy the movie. Being a lover of giant creature features the other slight disappointment was in the length of time the monster was seen in the movie. I say it's a slight disappointment because I do think that seeing only glimpses of the monster throughout the movie did help create that sense of fear of the unknown and the suspense of what may happen at any minute. But I don't think showing the monster a little more than they did would not have hurt. Also a consolation is the fact that creature designer Neville Paige designed a giant monster that was frightening, very original and innovative.

Much has been said about the plot so I will not rehash it here. I did like the acting and the time in the beginning of the movie getting to know our characters was well spent. For me they were characters which I grew to care about. TJ Miller's character of Hud and his unrequited crush on Marlena provides for some humorous moments of comic relief throughout the film. But the main relationship driving the plot of the movie is Rob who finds the courage to face a monster head on in his pursuit to rescue Beth the girl he's afraid to commit to. All in all Cloverfield is a fun, thrilling and entertaining movie that hopefully has brought a sense of real fright and terror to a genre of films that had long since lost its ability to frighten.

I went to see a monster flick and ended up walking out feeling seasick rather than feeling any sense of excitement at experiencing something amazing. I'll bet there are little kids puking outside theaters all across this country after seeing this movie. I had to close my eyes and just listen to large stretches. In retrospect, the latter was completely unneccessary, and could have been avoided with better editing (to cut down excessively long, and pointless as far as suspense and plot-line go, roller-coaster rides following the characters running up stairs, etc.). The movie also would have worked better with just one or two more elements of the "back story" (was the creature alien or deap sea?). Expand

Generally, we like camp in our B-movies, with poor dialogue and bad actors. It usually makes what happens to them enjoyable, instead of unfortunate or sad. Cloverfield has a pretty good script, and it was really well-casted. They don't bore you with a lot of words. Sometimes the camera does all the talking. It drew me in, just couldn't help it. The only thing that bothered me was that the action sequences, being in 1st person, made you feel like you were in a simulator at a theme park, only your seat doesn't move. It actually could have benefited from that, regardless how corny that might be. Still, it was pretty freakin' sweet. Highly recommend it in the theater. It's not going to work well on a TV at home. Not much is explained about what is going on and as a viewer you are kept pretty much in the dark as too what is happening which helps with relating to the characters and the situation itself. For what they were trying to portray they did a very good job. Expand

Cloverfield delivered the goods for me - I'm a fan of disaster movies and monster movies. The fx were great, the plot didn't have any big holes in it (unusual for sci-fi films), and the ending was not your typical hollywood fare. Cloverfield delivered the goods for me - I'm a fan of disaster movies and monster movies. The fx were great, the plot didn't have any big holes in it (unusual for sci-fi films), and the ending was not your typical hollywood fare. On the downside, the characters were just so-so. By the time I sat through the first 20 minutes of the movie (which only shows the pretty young things partying), I was more than ready for them to be turned into monster chow; throughout the rest of the film I never really cared about them. However, once the monster shows up, the pacing works, there are some good shock and scare moments, buildings crumble satisfactorily, and there's not TOO much gore. OK, the characters act a bit dumb sometimes, but that's a tradition in this kind of film. As an updated Godzilla film, Cloverfield works and is worth seeing. Expand

The camera is jittery...yes...thats the point. Get over it. As for the ending, if any of you had been paying attention to the opening sequences, it tells you the ending. Not everything has a perfect closure. Much like life. Deal with it or The camera is jittery...yes...thats the point. Get over it. Deal with it or just stop seeing movies all together. I'm sure there are plenty of copies of Shrek the 3rd if you're looking for happy endings. Expand

Not Fantastic, but still surprisingly well done. Among the group of us that went to see this film Friday the overall afterthoughts on this film were positive. I was mostly surprised by the fact that the movie wasn't cheesy! True you Not Fantastic, but still surprisingly well done. Among the group of us that went to see this film Friday the overall afterthoughts on this film were positive. I was mostly surprised by the fact that the movie wasn't cheesy! True you never find out where the monster came from, but the point is to keep the film in first person perspective (you know what they know). I will get this movie when it comes out! Expand

I really enjoyed this film. It was cannily paced (it needed some mundaneness at the beginning) and managed to convey the sense of great violence and loss.
