I think that Abrams did a fantastic job making people feel right in the center of an actual monster attack (despite it not being a 3D movie). However, there is still not enough clarification to go with this (even after watching it, you still don't know what the hell this monster is...) and some parts were a little dull (the opening scene was horrendously boring....). This could have been a great film, but it needed so much more. Expand

I find that if I go into a movie with modest expectations, I am rarely disappointed. That's probably true of most of us. I find that if I go into a movie with modest expectations, I am rarely disappointed. That's probably true of most of us. So, not having got caught up in all the "viral" hype that preceded this, I have to give the film pretty high marks. It kept my attention and had me rooting for at least one or two of the yuppies to survive. The herky-jerky camera wasn't as bad as I had heard. There are even scenes when it's held pretty still, allowing the viewers to catch their collective breath. Overall, a skillfully made film with decent performances, and a few effective moments of true tension and fear. Long live Godzilla :-) Expand

Did you want romance and plot lines? Its supposed to look like what would happen if its real. I liked it and I get really motion sick and I was relatively fine. I think its a good solid monster flick, I think it flowed well and It had the right balance of drama and fear. Pretty good flick overall, as long as people actuallyu understand what they are going to see. Expand

Generally, we like camp in our B-movies, with poor dialogue and bad actors. It usually makes what happens to them enjoyable, instead of unfortunate or sad. Cloverfield has a pretty good script, and it was really well-casted. They don't bore you with a lot of words. Sometimes the camera does all the talking. It drew me in, just couldn't help it. The only thing that bothered me was that the action sequences, being in 1st person, made you feel like you were in a simulator at a theme park, only your seat doesn't move. It actually could have benefited from that, regardless how corny that might be. Still, it was pretty freakin' sweet. Highly recommend it in the theater. It's not going to work well on a TV at home. People usually complain about how the people did a crappy job making the movie. The thing with Cloverfield is that the things people complain about are things that they did on purpose. The shaky camera was exactly how it would be if you or I were the ones filming. The people who go only to see the monster will be disappointed, but those people are also very stupid. The thing I love most about this movie is how afterwards, you can talk about it and think about it. They didn't mean for this movie to be everything in the whole story. It's obviously a big story and this movie is meant to be a small piece of it. It's not the beginning or the end of the story. They made exactly the movie they meant to make and I loved it. Expand

Very compelling up until the last 15 minutes or so, with some of the most clever special effects I've ever seen. It's worth admission for the sequence that starts in the middle of a military shoot-'em-up, and ends in a subway tunnel.

Though unexplained here, unlike in The Host, a monster appears in an urban area, this time Manhattan. The movie is presented as a video being shot by one party goer who has been assigned to video interview those at a going away party. When catastrophe hits, the videgoer is forced to wander about outside with others, thus rendering the video even more frequently jerky, and at times, not horizontal as the camera is dropped or fallen with. And in an interesting juxtaposition, because the video tape being used had previous images on it, you also see interspersed a record of better times. The movie is like Blair Witch meets Godzilla in New York City; quite implausible, but very exciting. Unlike Blair Witch, which I found to be totally uninteresting (I didn't care for any character, and as a group, found them all to act like some moronic cult on a mission), this movie dealt with a group of more or less normal yuppies who were forced to react to their disturbed environment. This is a very creative and entertaining movie, although those looking for super state-of-the-art technical effects or spectacular color images will be disappointed. Expand

I found the intimacy of the hand-held camera effect a viseral pleasure -- as if I was walking (or running) through the movie rather than just watching it. While it's a cliche to compare a movie to a roller coaster ride, the experience was very much like the fun of a good ride. I also enjoyed the dry humor. But when I read the reviews prior to seeing it, I was expecting something similar to the inane torture-porn movies that have come out as of late (Hostel, Saw 64, etc.) with emotionally stunted 20-somethings getting torn to bits. But I came out of the movie from a truly unique experience that none of the negative reviewers seemed to grasp. This is something brand new. The effects are spectacular and are grounded in real life. They are right in pointing out that the characters don't get beyond much yelling and oh-my-god-ing, but I think it's realistic. I think many people were trying to search for some kind of meaning out of it, some kind of deeper metaphor, but I actually like the fact that you are not given much information at all, it's all still a mystery after seeing it. Give it a chance, do pop some dramamine (the movie didn't effect me, but better safe than sorry) and then have fun. The shaky camera was a perfect effect on the movie, because for one, It makes us, the viewers, become more envolved with the movie, as if we were running from the monster and taping it ourselves. Sure, the first 30 minutes were not as exciting as the rest of the film. Get over it, what are they suppose to do, just put you in the middle of the attack and not explain the background of the day? The ending was a cliffhanger, and if you don't like that, then i really don't suggest this movie for you, but you should of seen it coming because one of the producers, J.J. Abrahms happens to be the king of cliffhangers. I happen to think the cliff hanger ending is perfect, It leaves it open for a sequel, which is in talks. So people that rate this movie 0's and 1's because of the cliffhanger, or shaky camera, please watch some other movies from Blockbuster, and learn to appreciate that Cloverfield has its own unique genre, which is very good. It is quite consuming, as long as you suppress the notion that people who are in this much fear of their life would most likely switch off the camera well before some of the events which occur. Where the movie falls short is in describing where the beast came from, what exactly were the small ones accompanying it (were they spawn or genetically unrelated and just along for the ride) and what happened afterward. Is our generation that inept that they need to be spoon fed every detail of a movie for it to be entertaining?! This movie was supposed to evoke your imagination. Yes the camera was super shaky....I'd like to see an amateur camera person that has missiles flying all around them and a 25 story monster killing everything in sight shoot that with a steady hand. This movie is supposed to be shot from a realistic point of view. And how much more real can you get from a random bloke on the street running for his life? I would've liked a little explanation about the monster but at the same time that's what made it so exciting for me. What the f*ck was that thing? Where did it come from? It got my brain thinking of all these crazy scenarios which made it so much more fun to watch. The whole movie for me was just so real seeming. For me it completely captured the chaos and craziness that probably would've ensued had something like that happen. I loved it and wouldn't have done it any other way. Bravo. Expand

Before watching this film I had no idea what it was about apart from the fact that it involved a monster at some point; I missed all the virals, trailers, so perhaps I will be reviewing this from a different point of view to others.... It's a truly brilliant film,, good acting (perhaps a bit too over the top at times) but most of all was how gripping it was and how it held your attention. Yes the camera scenes aren't perfect, but they add an eerie realism to the overall experience. I quite liked how the characters were people you couldn't really identify or want to know...what the movie does is show that all types of people, whether we like them or not, unify in a crisis. The parallels to 9/11 are there for all to see, and it's an ingenious piece of film. Just watch and enjoy Expand

And also setup the whole plot of the story. I'm guessing the people who said there was no plot didn't watch carefully enough or listen. The plot actually begins to develop after the attack begins, and from that point the plot is very simple they set out to rescue beth. I personally wouldn't have done this if i were him i would have got the heck on a chopper and escaped the area. The ending of the movie is to be expected for this genre, as we all know there was a part two for the Blair witch project and Godzilla. And i've also heard abroad that if could be a second movie in the works. Movies like these you don't want to rush, i also liked how everything was kept secret until the movie actually came out. I hate those movies previews when they have to show everything . As for the origins of the creature its possible the creature was lying dormant this whole time until it was awoken possibly from that oil tanker? Maybe they were drilling deep for oil and woke it up? Anyways if you haven't seen this movie yet i urge you to buy the DVD or seek a copy my some other means and watch it you won't be disappointed. Expand

It didn't seem like I was watching a movie, performed by actors. It really made me believe that I was watching so called found footage. I can understand why some people didn't enjoy the whole motion sickness inducing shaky cam. It was nice the way they interwove professional fx with really professionally shot camera work made to look like it was a puny home video camera. My one complaint is that when they first run headlong into the monster, the initial shots fired by the army looked a little hokey, but the rest of the fighting was top notch. Exploding babes, squished battletanks, impalements, heavy bombing and wickedly demolished metropolis all combine to provide the kind of theatrical experience that doesn't come along very often. Short but sweet, it is pretty darned rough at points but never quite "emotionally sadistic" as Salon.com ignorantly put it. The action scenes and carnage in the movie is very well done and while the video quality is understandable poor, the special effects and the audio are superb. The monster itself is frightening, and on a positive note all the internet spoilers I saw were false. I got caught up in all the online hype over this movie, and I started to wonder "What if it's crap?". But for some reason, I love it. It's one of the best monster movies I've seen in a while, even if absolutely nothing is explained (what does Slusho have to do with anything?) But it works well as an experience. Having an army guy just come in and explain the monster and how to kill it would have completely ruined the pace of the movie. But it's not a perfect movie, and I can see why people aren't crazy about it. If you're not a monster movie person (like me) it can seem shallow and empty. But for me, it was haunting. Some shots were very well set up (not bad for a no name director). I don't know what else to say. I just really liked it. No, it's not perfect. But I was impressed just the same. The fx were great, the plot didn't have any big holes in it (unusual for sci-fi films), and the ending was not your typical hollywood fare. On the downside, the characters were just so-so. By the time I sat through the first 20 minutes of the movie (which only shows the pretty young things partying), I was more than ready for them to be turned into monster chow; throughout the rest of the film I never really cared about them. However, once the monster shows up, the pacing works, there are some good shock and scare moments, buildings crumble satisfactorily, and there's not TOO much gore. OK, the characters act a bit dumb sometimes, but that's a tradition in this kind of film. As an updated Godzilla film, Cloverfield works and is worth seeing. Expand

Movies like the Truman Show and The Matrix explored Post-Modernist Although not cinematically a perfect movie it still merrits a 10. For me the best Horror/Sci-Fi movies are the ones which manages to tap into our modern fears and anxieties. Movies like the Truman Show and The Matrix explored Post-Modernist fears of a false and meaningless existence while entertaining. Godizilla (the original) tapped into a nations fragile sense of being after becoming the first (and luckily to this day, the only) people ever attacked by nuclear weapons. Cloverfield is obviously a hyper-real answer to the banality of Post-Modernism in that it shows us real things, terrible things always have consequences. It does so by invoking the fear of 9/11 and by showing us a small personalized persepctive on an unexpected catastrophy. I was utterly taken with how real and immediate the sense of danger was in this movie. Unlike the remake of Godzilla, this monster didn't take care to run between the skyscrapers. And when it smashed into one, debri (and entire buildings) fell, and people the people below had to deal with the unimagineable task of surving that. The movies obvious faults in retrospect, the vertigo it gave me due to the camera work being the main one, in hindsight have become an integral part of the film for me. This is because I honestly believe that had things been done differently the movie wouldn't have stayed with me the way it has, continuing to make me think about my own fragility in a world I usually have little or no say in. MOst people have complained that the characters are annoying and shallow. As this is essentially a monster movie, I expect people to be one thing: meat. If you like horror movies, monster movies specifically -- this is much better made and more realistic than shit like "One MIssed Call" or "The Eye". It's not "Citizen Cane", but it is fun. Expand

It's sort of the blair with project on crack meets a superior godzilla/aliens-esque monster who's got nasty little babies eating up everything moving. One of those genuine LOVE / HATE movies. Either you love it or ya hate it. It's sort of the blair with project on crack meets a superior godzilla/aliens-esque monster who's got nasty little babies eating up everything moving. One of those genuine LOVE / HATE movies. Either you love it or ya hate it. Personally I found it to be rather entertaining, but only on the basis of reality. If a monster REALLY did attack New York, and you were at a party, what would YOU experience? How would YOU react? If you had a loved one in danger would you run away or would you go save them? Special effects were minimal as LIFE needs no special effects. This movie was about reality, not glitz and glamour and special effects. (minus the 100 foot tall beastie of course)... It's a glimpse into the future if indeed a sleeping monster did rise up from the depths of the earth and attack a major metropolitan city, such as New York. And for everyone saying to themselves I would act this way or that, having been a US Marine myself and staring down the barrel of the gun... you really don't know your true nature until god forbid, you're thrown into the fire and truly tested. CLOVERFIELD was a great experience. It felt like I was there because of the video camera. A must see in theaters.

You are almost part of the whole action which enhances the experience. You learn new things about the monster and the capabilities it has. Many people are complaining that the monster looks like crap but NO ONE can seriously do any better. The monster is fantastic. Other people are saying this movie sucked because it wasn't scary. Those people are known in our society as dumbasses. This movie is not a horror movie but falls under the genre of suspense. However, this is all my opinion and my opinion is telling the world, "Please please please watch this movie. It is an instant classic that actually lived up to the hype it has been receiving before the release. 10/10 Expand

People seem to forget about suspending disbelief while watching this movie. Does any great monster movie not take liberties with design and plot? Suspend your disbelief and go see this movie. Suspend your disbelief and go see this movie. It is full of action, great special effects, and intensity. I think some people were disappointed when they realized it was not a documentary but instead a Godzilla rehash. Any monster destroys city flick is. That doesn't mean that we should stop making them. It is a damn good film and it deserves praise for its accomplishments. Expand
