Tom Holland tries his best, but the film is too overlong, self-indulgent and immature, and the screenplay is too formulaic, to make this worth a watch for all but the least-demanding stans.

Was a bit skeptical at first about the movie and about Tom potentially breaking the fourth wall, but I just finished watching it and it was brillant. Just wow! Tom Holland and Ciara Bravo killed it in this one! Just everything about this movie was so wonderful!! The direction, the score, hair and makeup, cinematography—just everything!! These people deserve Oscars!!

Cherry turned out to be a surprise to me. I found it very pleasant from beginning to end, although I will not deny that the ending carries several problems but that they do not ruin the movie. Tom Holland's performance is incredible, it blew me away.

So the acting was the only thing I loved about this movie. Kudos to Holland. The writing on the other hand was atrocious and failed to adapt its source material, leaving behind underdeveloped characters and scenes that fell flat.

The Russo brothers were able to coordinate two of the biggest movies in the superhero genre, and they did a good job making them. But it's in these kinds of small films where true directors bring out their best weapons, and in the Russos' case, it ended up showing several weaknesses.

Cherry is even Oscar bait to some degree. (Don't worry, it will not achieve anything) and that's why it aspires to so much and cannot achieve its goal. The movie simply lacks perspective, plus it's ruthlessly long.
Although I must certainly emphasize that it never becomes a story that cannot be seen, it's simply that instead of being clear-cut and concise, the Russos prefer to expand and weaken their own film in the process.

Tom Holland gets a dramatic twist that will likely give him better roles down the road outside of Marvel and Spider-Man stardom, and I say this, because in my opinion, his portrayal felt more organic than what he did in The Devil All the Time.
I definitely think the role should have gone to a more experienced actor, but I admit that Holland pulls it off with a natural effort.

Check it out, but caveat emptor.… Expand

The book was miles better. Sorry Russo, but this movie didn't really adapt the best parts of the book. Respect to the actors who nailed their performances.

Throughout the heavy-handed, predictable narrative, Holland excels with depth and complexity. I really enjoyed this movie, it felt like it could be a real life story and in a way it also was about real love, trauma from war and such things. And if the hallmark of a good movie isn’t one that stays with you and hovers at the edges of your mind while you wrestle with it, then, really what is? Cherry is not an easy movie. But it’s a movie about how the military prey on the vulnerable and then abandon them. It’s a movie about how the pharmaceutical companies and doctors drugged a generation and left them to die of drug addictions. It’s a movie of trauma, of desperation, of hopelessness. It should NOT be an easy movie. It should be hard, it should hurt, it should make you feel horror and disgust and even loathing. It does all of that. It stays with you long after you finish. And the Critics might hate it, but I’m not a critic. I’m an average movie watcher. And I thought this was phenomenal.… Expand

However, the biggest issue I have is that, the motives for the characters' bad decisions are completely stupid and avoidable. I mean my heart has been broken, but I never even once thought about joining the army just because of it, and I think there could have been a better reason for the main character to do so.… Expand

Your roots are showing. That's the biggest problem I have with this movie. I didn't mind the story, I didn't mind the acting, it was shot well (I even dug some of the dreamier elements), but it tries to rip-off too many better films. FirstYour roots are showing. A hard film about drug addiction, which is shot very stylishly, and this is the merit of Russo.

Tom Holland is due to receive an Oscar for this role, this is his best role in his entire career.

I don‘t understand the hate for this movie. It‘s a fantastic story with different parts and it shows a brilliant story about a man who lives every kind of life.
Definitely an underated movie with fantastic shots.

They just don't make movies this good anymore. Critics, as per their usual setting, are rating this based on their personal hidden agendas. But if you want to have a good time, and have a mind of your own, I highly recommend this movie.

I do acknowledge that Cherry has flaws for instance I think the script had some issues in spots, not many but a few, and I think certain sequences were paced poorly despite a few minor issues I don't think these flaws make Cherry a bad movie. I would recommend Cherry to any sadness junkies or those who are fans of Holland because he along with Bravo deliver fenomenal performances.… Expand
