Well directed for most of its time but eventually it gets lost within its own insubstantiality and ends up being a comedy that fails to advance more or to become something bigger.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This is a perfectly okay movie. Okay. A precocious young British woman living in New York with a fairly nice apartment and a musician for a neighbour. The musician is attractive and surprise, surprise, when Carrie opens her heart and gives him the time of day (instead of pride and prejudicing him) she discovers him to be a classical musician (and she loves her Edvard Grieg). Otherwise, weird characters (her colleagues at her new job) are weird and the bad guy (her former lit professor) is a villain, a chauvinist who happens to deserve the well-delivered punch in the face towards the film's close. As for Carrie going on a blind-date via the classifieds, this felt dated and not in keeping with the film's modern setting. Still, the brief interaction with the soon-to-be-married man was a momentary highlight and could have been more intriguing. Again, an okay film. It is digestible, the character veers occasionally into know-it-all territory yet you feel for her. Fine. Okay. Expand
