There are some legitimately good scenes, a few performances were pretty good (Samuel L. Jackson, Ben Mendelsohn, Jude Law, and that’s it), and some of the action was good. The character of Captain Marvel is bad, she changes in no way. Brie Larson did a bad job, which is unexpected. She’s a great actress (see 2015’s ‘Room’), but it seemed like she didn’t care about this movie. Every one of her lines made me cringe between the mediocre writing and the terrible delivery. The plot is predictable, and music choices are really on-the-nose, most of the CGI is meh. The face work on Samuel L. Jackson and Clark Gregg is amazing mostly. This movie is a tonal mess. The comedy is mostly hit or miss, and mostly misses for me, but I did get a few smiles out of it. It’s not a great solo movie, and it’s not a great way to introduce the character of Captain Marvel. There’s nothing that see does that shows me she can kill Thanos. It didn’t convince me that she’s any stronger any other Marvel character. In my opinion, this movie did not succeed in what it wanted to achieve, but it’s watchable, and enjoyable, and it wasn’t a negative experience, but I wasn’t blown away or anything. Expand

I believe that the true frustration for Captain Marvel actually stems from our current "epidemic of passable movies", to quote Nerdwriter. Because ultimately, there is not much new to be seen. And at this point in the MCU, we expect Marvel to know what its doing, especially with such an important origin story. Expand

While it is not Marvels best movie, not thinking about the controversies, Captain Marvel is a fun edition to the MCU. And most VERY negative with no real reason are most likely fake. Brie Larson, Samuel L. Jackson, and the Skrulls are highlights.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. *whew* Well this was... disappointing. "Captain Marvel" in every sense of the word, feels just like a lazy, half-baked movie, with little to no substance. The plot itself centers around our titular character trying to find a past she can't remember. Hey, Marvel, quick question. How did you make it not interesting?!?!? Like come on, their are so many routes to take with a hero not able to remember their past but decide to keep doing what they think is right. Where did you guys take it? The most generic place possible. On the one hand, I do like Nick Fury in this a whole lot, and their are some very funny moments, but overall, it's a very 'meh' film, and i find this a problem for three specific reasons. 1. You made the character of "Ant-Man" interesting!!! This shouldn't have been hard to make her interesting. 2. Theirs a lot of claims this is the big women empowerment movie, and if I was a woman, and this wad the movie you gave me, I'd be pissed off to no extent. 3. "Alita: Battle Angel" came out, and that had an interesting female lead, great action, and amazing side characters. Why do I bring this up? Because you're Marvel, you're the top dogs of interesting leads, lovable side characters, and great action. This whole movie is just so meh, because their is obviously some effort thrown into it, but not with passion. Take "Black Panther"; despite all its flaws, it's very evident the movie was made with so much passion and heart. This feels like no passion went into it, and it very clearly shows. I'm not against women centered, or female empowerment movies at all, but I want to see them done right. If I ever have a daughter, and she wants to see something bad ass with women in it, I'm gonna show her "Alita", or "Wonder Woman", because those are well done, passionate, and show her it's okay for her to be who she is. All I can is, please don't let "Black Widow" suck. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I give this 6/10 - it's a okay superhero movie with some strenghs and some weaknessess. What I loved the most was the world building around the Kree's and their mysterious highest leader. I also liked the story and it's different twists, even though they could have done a better job concealing the fact that the Kree are the bad guys. The female-empowerment stuff isn't holding the movie back as much as I thought, but the fighting scene with "I'm just a girl" in the background was one of the cringest moments I've had watching a movie for years. I'm all for adding odd music to scenes for comic purposes (like in Guardians of the Galaxy) but it really didn't work here. Carol is just starting to unpack her powers, and are about to meet her former tutor and his elite crew. There is some serious tension in that moment. And then the song comes on and ruins it all. Some wokeness can also be spotted in the fact that Captain Marvel is a woman, supported by two black characters, and her prime enemy is a white man who is holding her back and telling her to control her emotions. It's all about her realeasing her womanhood powers and breaking with the controlling patriarchy. This theme is not obvious or in your face though. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Before you dislike this review, remember that I have some really strange opinions lol

Despite lots of people disliking this movie, I found this movie an entertaining film. Of course, it has some setbacks, but I feel that the movie had more good than bad. For example, the movie had a refreshingly good storyline for a MARVEL movie. The characters blended in to the story well, and felt like they all had a purpose.

However, something that I found unpleasant was the alien shape-shifters coming to invade earth. This plot element is a huge cliche that should not be used anymore, as it has become stale.

Another positive about the movie was the acting of the human characters. they seem like they are in a real universe and not in someone's voice cracking fever dream. *cough* blair witch *cough*

I rated mixed and not a positive because the movie has lots of lacking parts, like the action scenes. It seems that MARVEL is focusing more on comedy in some parts than actual action and suspense scenes. The mainstream viewers seem to love the humorous parts, but I saw it as a negative because it does not fit with the original idea of the film, and it made the movie drag on for much longer than it should have. I would not recommend seeing it in theatres, but maybe at home, as the movie is not worth 10 dollars plus popcorn and soda. Just my opinion.

Again this is not Brie larson's fault, if anything it is a good thing because now the Russo brother's have her character as a blank slate to work with. The supporting cast was very good except the child actor, but of course it's a child actor so can't fault her too much. Again, this movie didn't do anything wrong exactly but it did not do anything well. Expand

It has a few strong highs mixed throughout but for every great moment it has an equally great stumble or cringe-worthy moment. For instance, while Samuel Jackson has a few great beats in the film the movie also portrays Nick Fury in ways that are inconsistent with the character long established across multiple films in the MCU. The only thing that is consistently fantastic for every moment they're on-screen are the actresses portraying Maria and Monica Rambeau (especially the young actress playing Monica). Ben Mendelson comes close to being great throughout but even he has a minor stumble or two. Long story short, Captain Marvel is a mediocre MCU movie that doesn't quite fit in with the rest of the MCU but isn't it's worst offering either. It belongs more than the solo Hulk outing at the very least. Diehard MCU fans will walk away a little disappointed but probably not hating the film. More casual fans will likely enjoy it a little more but I think only a handful will come away loving it. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This movie just felt empty. The Script was not written well. Carol Danvers doesn't develop as a character like a Captain America or a Black Widow. How she acts, talks at the beginning of the movie it is how it ends. There is no stability in the character throughout the movie, she just one lines, relationships that she has on earth feel 'akward', 'forced', 'weird', and she becomes the most powerful avenger somehow. It feels like those movies that are long and you later try to remember how/ why is this movie so long. There are quite some good concepts in this movie (Carson being a Skrull at the beginning) but ultimately it could have been better executed (Especially how Nick Fury lost his eye). This movie puts great pressure on the Russo Brothers. Captain Marvel better not one-punch Thanos. Hopefully, the Russo Brothers will 'develop' this character rightly in the future. Expand

The story of Captain Marvel follows Carol Danvers as she becomes one of the universe's most powerful heroes when Earth is caught in the middle of a galactic war between two alien races.

A movie that serves the purpose of introducing the titular hero so you would know who she is when she shows up in Avengers: Endgame.

The story while not amazing is fun enough to deserve a watch. Great action scenes and funny moments. #GooseIsThaBomb

Soundtrack while sometimes was good in other it actually ruined the scenes I was watching. So it was a hit and miss.

But if I have to be honest Brie Larson was the wrong actress to portray Captain Marvel. She is devoid of emotion and her acting is robotic. “Take two steps, turn, look mean and heroic” like she is just acting being a super hero instead of being the hero. Sometimes it reminded me of straight to TV movies with low budget dialogue and actors. And at this time in the game Marvel should have brought big guns in acting.

But maybe they’ll introduce her to Rouge and have each other shake hands (if you know what I mean)

All in all it is entertaining but not needed to be watched to be ready for Avengers: Endgame. Maybe wait until it comes out to rent.

A good aproximation to what Phase 4 may bring although the story stops more on world building that reiterates some ideas laid in the first Guardians of the Galaxy.

Not so much for the development of the character of Carol Danvers, the protagonist that appears to be the perfect soldier even if a little bit "explosive", a character with no good antagonist to match her, a character that can overtake any foes with a power that is not that well explained.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The first 'female-led' MCU movie was, more or less, by the numbers. It wasn't a terrible movie (which I thought it would be), but it wasn't exceptional either. The film from several key problems. The plot is ploddy and key issues seem to suddenly be abandoned and casually forgotten about. The pacing, though generally fine feels just a little bit off. But of course, the worst aspect of the film was it's choice of lead. Despite having the credentials of being an Academy Award winning actress, Brie Larson had literally no business being in a superhero movie, especially as it's lead heroine. For about 80% she literally has the same dull look on her face, no matter what situation she is faced with. I could count on my fingers the number of times she actually displayed emotion. The irony of this was her story, which suggested she was too emotional by Kree standards, and needed to learn to be less emotive. No problems there. As Kree as Kree gets. One important characteristic for any MCU lead is charisma, and Miss Larson has literally no charisma in this role. She feels more like a placeholder, waiting for the actual star to take over the role. She never ever seems to truly own the role, and make it her own. She was, in a word, unbelievable. And I mean that in the proper meaning of the word, never once do I believe that she is that character, never once do I actually think she is this bad-ass. There's a point near the end of the film when she is about to go into a battle, and she is walking, presumably 'bad-ass' and she just looks like a fan trying hilariously to be bad-ass, but just being bad. The technical of the film are what we have come to expect for MCU films. They were incredible, beautiful and explosive. Sam Jackson is awesome even as a slightly more lukewarm Fury, although the revelation of how he got his patented wounded eye is frankly disappointed. The star of the movie, of course, was Goose the cat, and as a cat lover myself, I always think there's a place for our feline friends on the big screen. The Skrulls were also brought to life, although a little different from the source material, although I am personally curious to see where this particular version of the Skrulls could go. Their story is undoubtedly the heart of the film, and they were actually more human and made me feel more than it's Academy Award winning lead. The film, in effect, should not exist yet. Placing it just before Endgame is frankly puzzling. Surely the current Avengers arc can be solved without the need of yet another all-powerful Mary Sue character. I cannot be feel that the entire story might have been better served to be part of a new arc rather than latching on to a soon-to-be old arc. In closing, Captain Marvel was an unnecessary movie that likely should have been made in a few years rather than now. It is an enjoyable film, not exceptional, and suffers from, sadly, the most uninspired lead the MCU has yet seen. It also trod on dangerous group in respect to both the source material as well as pre-established MCU lore. Marvel, I don't need to tell you to respect the Lore. It's what Stan Lee, God rest his soul, would have done. Hopefully, course correction will come. But thankfully, despite it's flaws, it is not The Last Jedi I feared it would be. Expand

in summary: It wasn't awful. It wasn't amazing. It wasn't boring or edge on seat whole time. It wasn't just meh either though.

plot: It didn't have a super predictable or confusing plot. The plot was good and did help give MCU Captain Marvel origin, even though as a comic book fan it wasn't very true to the source material, it also didn't verge too far from it.

acting: The acting was decent or at least on par with overall other MCU origin films (except Iron Man and Ant-Man, which were THE perfect actor for the role).Brie wasn't just monotone or expressionless like some are saying and lot speculated. Brie was very stoic/serious in behavior but it made sense though for the story and what it looked like they wanted to portray character development wise. Some of the emotions did seem a bit forced or fake at times but it again maybe could be justified by the character's state of mind and understanding of whats happening.

music: The final main fight song was a poor choice to me but the fight choreography at least matched it well and could make sense. I just felt like it made a scene that was important more "fun" and it didn't seem like it fit there. My father who did watch the movie with me didn't have an issue with it however.

CGI/FX: The CGI/Special effects I feel could been better at times but they didn't distract too much from watching the film or from the plot.

other: There was some humor moments like a typical Marvel film has, even if some of them fell flat for me.

It also did help fill in some "plot holes" from earlier MCU films, even if one those "fills" is stupid as heck to me.

It can be hard to relate to Cptn Marvel, but it makes sense some due to what the movie is and how much she even knows about herself. I also am worried some about her being too OP but Marvel can probably handle adding her in without making it a "superman complex" issue like happened in Justice League...hopefully.

overall: I give it between a 6.5 to 7 out of 10 (sorry but just an option of out of 5 is too limiting for the complexity of how I try to rate things)

This is using it comparable to one the best MCU (solo) films and my personal favorite (winter soldier) which is a 7.8 on imdb. This makes it about on par with Captain America's and Thor's origin films, and lower then Iron man and GoG origin films which is how I place it. When I make my MCU list from fave to least I rated it at about the 13th MCU film...with Captain America and Homecoming right by it (so its not a BAD film) and this is rating it comparably to the other MCU films.

overall(general public): if wanting to know how it is as an individual film the score is higher, since I feel like I could watch it maybe twice in a year and still be content and enjoy each viewing. So not comparing it to the MCU films and just as if its a good movie...It would be more like an 8 or 8.5. Its an enjoyable watch.

On the political side: If you watched it without any idea about the comments or controversy made, you probably wouldn't notice anything. Its not at all "in your face about it" or clearly pushing an agenda. But knowing the comments one scene is very clearly "girl power",but it also still makes sense in context of the plot.

This review was by a marvel MCU and comics fan, so may be rated a bit higher than the general public or lesser marvel fan may give it.

And because of all the drama about reviews being faked: I don't see it as a 10/10 or 1/10 film. Some may but most won't unless trying/wanting to prove a point.

CGI and visuals: great! I watched Nick Fury closely and the de-aging worked great. The rest oft he CGI was great too, much better than in Black Panther.
All in all had the movie (with few exceptions) two color ranges: „to dark“ and „bubblegum“. Although I did like the 90ies look.
The Music. Mostly the music was good. But there were some scenes wich seemingly wanted to copy the contrasting musical effect of Guardians of the Galaxy, but it didn’t work. Characters
It was awesome to see Nick Fury and Coulson again but it was a little sad that they tried to use Fury as a kind of comic relief. He had some awesome scenes and yes, he is not the hard-ass Director of Shield we all love, but the funny sidekick? He was still one of the best thing in the movie! Losing his eye that way? How stupid ist hat?
Talos: maybe the most interesting and rounded Character in the movie. Korath and Ronan: Yeah, they were in Guardians 1, could have been any Kree, but the connection was not nessecary.
Maria Rambeau: Came to me as the stronger woman oft he two pilots. I don’t know if it ist he playing or the writing, but as a Character musch more interesting than Carol Danvers.
Minn-Erva, Att-Lass, Bron-Char: Completely colorless, despite ther blue skin. Could have been anyone and are completely interchangeable.
Monica Rambeau: Nice little Kid, but a little Anoyying at times. Espacially when the 12 Year old ist he one that tells her mom to be a great role model. Please don’t put feminist propaganda into the mouth of Kids, don’t put any propaganda in their mouths. Movies are made to entertain, not to pursue a political agenda.
Yon-Rogg: Of the Kree, the only one with real Characteristics. Well played.
Goose: No, no, no, no. Most reviews I seen name the cat the best thing in the movie, I don’t.
And the most important at the end: Carol Danvers aka Vers. First of: she is never called Captain Marvel and I think it is a good thing, because I think the Name is a Punchline in it self. Alltogether I have to say, that Carol Danvers isn’t a very likeable Character. I didn’t had the feeling of: „I want to see that character again in another movie“ like I had with Tony Stark, Natasha Romanov, Peter Parker and Steven Strange. It was more like Steve Rogers or Thor: „Well, when she comes back, okay, when not, no big loss.“. Why is that? It’s beause in my opinion she HAS no character. She is defined by having superpowers and puzzeling together her backgroud isn’t done for the sake oft he character development but for the plot oft he movie. Yes we know now about her history, but it still feels flat.
I know that Brie Larson has done movies, I don’t remember seeing her in one although I may have seen movies with her. I’ve been told, that she is a great actress, but I didn’t seen it here. It felt like she went in here with a „just another job“ attitude. If you see the other MCU-actors, you see the characters on sceen. Not the alter Egos. You see Tony Stark, not RDJ playing Iron Man, you see Steve Rogers, not Chris Evans playing Captain America. Here you see Brie Larson playing just another Superhero. If she really should be the new face oft he MCU, she hast o stop playing Vers (or Captain Marvel) and become Carol Danvers on Screen. If she doesn’t, I see the End of the MCU coming.
Story: It was an okay story if you look around and compare to other superhero movies. As an origin Story it stands out. It shares it’s place with Captain America. Humor: In german there is a line in a poem by Johann Wolfgang von Goethe „Himmelhoch jauchzend, Zum Tode betrübt“, roughly translated „sky-high cheering, saddened to death“. There were great punchlines. Mostly by Fury and Coulson. There were much more silly or just not funny. That‘s very sad, because the MCU was mostly full of good placed and well developed humor.
Coming to the end:
- mid credits scene, yeah, why not
- after credits scene, lets say that I think the one of Spider-Man was better

It is by far not the worse movie I’ve ever seen, but it is by far not good, just little above average.
For the future: don’t tell the viewers forehands what they have to feel about the movie and how important the gender of the main character is. I would suggest that the complete Disney Company (including all subsidiaries) take movies and TV-shows like Wonder Woman, Alien, Buffy, Divergent or Mara und der Feuerbringer (germany, 2015) or ever their own Rogue One and Clone Wars or Rebels (Asoka Tano & Co) to heart. In contrast to what most feminists tell you all the time, a strong female has still to be a character first and a woman second, not a woman without any character but overwhelming powes. Carol Danvers dodged the bullet by a hair's breadth, but I still think she ist o powerfull fort he MCU, I don’t think, that superman powerlevel Characters will be a positive addition tot he MCU.

In general an interesting movie with some very good visual effects, just a some flaws here and there, and a story with an unexpected outcome. The final battle feels very unadecuate and unbalanced. In the end I see potencial here but it's wasted to much degree. Changes in the canon from the comics seem interesting for the most part (there's one I think was innecesary but it’s not that relevant) and I look forward to what may come from them in the future but in the same way I regret a little bit the limitations that they impose and which they come with. Brie Larson is Ok as Carol but lacks as Captain, I hope there’s a better and original script for her in further appearances. The rest of the cast is fine as well and Jude Law few appereances feel interesting in this role. If Wonder Woman is an A or a 10, this one is a B- or a 7. Within the MCU I would place it above Ant-Man and the Wasp and Guardians 2 but below the first Ant-Man movie. Expand

score is forgettable and felt a bit rushed towards the end.
Bre Larson does a decent job portraying the head strong, cocky and at times witty. performance as a whole could have been better but I loved the chemestry between her and Samuel l Jackson. and are some of my favorite parts.
The supporting cast was amazing Samuel Jackson, Lashana Lynch, Ben Mendobah. Fight scenes were creative and suspenseful though at times funny.
space battles looked great and the CGI looked fine.
The story was nothing new but done well
I'm glad they avoided certain cliches that most moves do today for example in wonder woman Gal Gado walk around like and idiot even trying on dresses for like a half hour but here the main character lands and immediately acts like the soldier she is and wants to communicate with HQ and continue her mission.
One of the first scenes in the movie which involves Carols memories shows a clever way to show us some back story of the character while showing us what kind of person she is while also progressing the story.
Is this the greatest hero movie?
not at all, but it's a good movie and I recommend watching it if your a fan of the MCU.
If your not you could still get some enjoyment out of the film from the humor and action pieces alone.
and I am giving this movie a 6/10

The one huge complaint I have is the very awkward pacing of the entire movie. Before you know it the first hour (of a two hour movie) is over and nearly nothing of great substance has occurred. The last 40 minutes of the movie is where all the story is contained. The story itself is moderately interesting, with an unexpected twist throw-in (especially if you have read the comics). However, for the most part, the story is uninspired and leaves much to be desired. For a story that was supposed to expose mass audiences to Captain Marvel for the first time, the movie spent a surprisingly little amount of time on developing Brie Larson's titular character. Moments that I felt should have held more weight felt light and delivered very little.

For the positives, some of the action scenes were very entertaining (however, the finale was plagued with a very off and unneeded song choice). Captain Marvel's powers are interesting and I can not wait for them to be further developed in future installments to see her full extent. Overall the movie suffered from poor direction and writing, but was saved in some parts through the expert talents of Samuel Jackson and some of Brie Larson's scenes really showed the potential of a really great character. However, the writing for her character was so bland and boring that Brie could only do so much with the material. A decent contribution to the MCU but not a memorable one.

And by controversial, what I mean is it made a bunch of nerdbro jackasses on the internet mad for some reason. I don’t know, some **** about Brie Larson hating white men or something, even though she literally has nothing to do with the writing or production of the movie? I don’t get it. Anyway, how is it? It’s fine! It’s like every single other middle-of-the-road Marvel solo movie ever made. It takes no risks. It’s safe, unchallenging popcorn entertainment. There are one or two things I thought this movie did really well, the de-ageing effects are fantastic, the ‘90s setting was fun and I kinda liked the Star Wars-ish vibe it had at times, but other than that this is just a serviceable, cookie-cutter, nothing-special-about-it superhero movie. How are the characters? They’re fine. The story? It’s fine. The action? It’s fine. The effects? They’re fine. The acting? It’s fine. The music? It’s fine. The comedy? It’s fine. The connections with the other movies? They’re fine. It’s fine. It’s not as good as Guardians of the Galaxy, but it’s not as bad as Ant-Man and The Wasp. It’s okay. There were some kinda bad moments, the writing and social commentary is extremely obvious and on-the-nose and there is an absolutely baffling music choice in one of the final battles that I feel is trying to be like an Edgar Wright movie or GotG but it just sticks out like a sore thumb, but that’s about it as far as actual issues I have with it. There just isn’t a lot about it that I think is especially good either. I know this movie means a lot to a lot of people and I think that’s great. I don’t really agree, Wonder Woman did it first and did it better, but I’m glad it did so well financially. Hopefully we’ll get bigger and better movies like this out of it. If you haven’t seen it already, check it out if you like Marvel movies, skip it if you’re like me and you don’t really care. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Captain Marvel isn’t just a cookie cutter Marvel origin story. It’s focus on autopsy and self knowledge makes it a storyline that is tailor made for a different kind of hero and a different kind of audience. A lot of the villainy of the film has to do with control of female power through gaslighting and other forms of deception. Carol’s recognition of her own power and her conscious moral alignment with the downtrodden is central to the drama of this story.

Captain Marvel is a bit of a slog for the first half of the movie. Vers is amnesiac and a little bit neutered, and the conflict between the Kree and a race of watermelon/chameleon (or “watermeleon”) people manages to be both confusing and yet unoriginal. The story warms up in the second half–the fight scenes are played for laughs. It’s where Brie Larson’s understated swagger and impish braggadocio best fit her physicality. The flashback scene in which the shapeshifters spin through Vers’s memory like an amateur DJ is visually interesting way to tell backstory, because it’s not quite a passive learning experience. There seems like there’s room for an unreliable narrator and some manipulation of people and places and events, and the unsettling commentary overlaid and Vers’s unsettled expression ups the creep-factor.

There are some confusing aspects to the movie and its got a few disappointments. Spoilers.

Confusing: Why is she called Captain Marvel? Do we at any point have foreshadowing that what the one guy finds at the lab is actually why they’ve come? Because everyone looks pretty surprised except Carol, who seems like she’s figured it out. And then the wife’s explanation is equally unsuitable and vague.

Disappointing: the iconic scene from the trailer that you’re hoping is a super cut, Dunkirk-style, of three separate storylines, is, in fact, actually a single moment where three scenes we’ve never witnessed at any other part of the film are spliced together to make for a faux-meaningful moment of the resilience of women/humanity getting back up after they’ve been knocked down. What was so traumatizing on that day at the beach when she was four years old that it’s lodged in her memory at that life-or-death moment in the climax? Why is her strained relationship with her parents so generically bad? Why does no one shoot Carol in the head while she’s being restrained by the AI overlord of the Kree? Also, why does the Kree have an AI overlord and then also that other dude in the hood calling the shots? Where’s the flow chart for this organization?

I’m not entirely certain that this film would hold up to multiple viewings. It seems like the major twist and a lot of the gags are visual jokes that rely on an unexpected component of identity being shifted. That being said, I wouldn’t discourage anyone from finding out. I’ll see you on the other end of my extended break in Europe. Have a lovely March!

Is it bad? No. Is it good? No. Is it an average, dull, generic, and extremely flawed superhero origin story? Yes!

Pros: The tributes to Stan Lee are beautiful and very touching, the movie wasn’t as much of a misandrist wokefest as I thought it was going to be, some of the action scenes are fun to watch, and Goose is funny and adorable. (I just really love cats. Sue me!)

Cons: Nick Fury is a complete joke in this movie, Carol Danvers is an emotionless character with no flaws and no personality, the movie takes place in the 90s but feels completely inauthentic and inconsistent with the time period, the sexism that Carol experiences is unrealistic and over-the-top, the movie retcons the entire MCU just to make its Mary Sue protagonist seem more important than she really is, and given the fact that Carol is written as an overpowered and flawless character, I never felt that there was any real conflict.

All in all, the movie was better than I feared it would be (I was expecting it to be complete garbage), but it was just so bland and boring. I don’t want to see a movie about a talking plank of wood; I want to see a movie with character development and stakes. I want to see a movie that takes place in the 90s (my childhood) that doesn’t feel like modern-day America with characters that tell you how “90s” the movie is every two minutes. I want to see a movie where the men aren’t emasculated and the women aren’t perfect saints who have no flaws and can do no wrong. And I want to see a Marvel movie that’s actually consistent with the rest of the MCU, not just shoehorned in for the sake of “Gurl Powar!”

And no, I am not a misogynist for saying all this. (Kind of hard for me to be a misogynist, considering the fact that I’m a woman).

Even "Homecoming" or "Black Panther" though Peter Parker and T'Challa were fully introduced in "Civil War". Maybe because "Captain Marvel" doesn't understand what it should be: first solo film, prequel to "Endgame" or to the whole Avengers thing. But I can't say that "Captain Marvel" is a bad film or the first serious Marvel's fault. Yes, the story of Fury's eye, visual decisions and, in fact, untold Kree-Skruls war disappoint you. But Samuel L. Jackson's acting, good humour in some scenes and, hell, yes, Goose the cat herself save the day. Brie Larson should've starred in her own solo film but it didn't happen. I wish she could develop her character's personality in the future MCU films. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. One of the weaker MCU films that really never finds its stride, the premise is quite good but the execution and performances aren’t and there are some plot holes that spoil the film for me. Whether it is a casting or script problem for me Brie Larson doesn’t really present a capturing character. I get it that her thing (before being basically gifted her abilities in a plane crash) is that she is a battler who doesn’t lie down. However, this is only demonstrated in flash backs which dont flesh the character out as you never really get caught up in the drama of those moments. Plus in the film people are far more horrible to her and more consistently than you would believe is credible in real life unless that person was a total detestable cretin.. Other issues with the film for me were I knew from the first five minutes that she was siding with “bad guys” as one of the kree was a villain in guardians of the galaxy.. in terms of viewing chronology it would be better to see this film first...

Finally the skulls are presented as peaceful loving family type aliens which removes any doubt as to the worthiness of captain marvel finding them a home. Hmm it would have been better if they were also evil scumbags who were thoroughly despicable and have a moral play on whether it is just to accept / participate in their genocide. Similarly the kree are also one dimensional characters which is disappointing. Even if we we know some of them are total jerks we could have had some ambiguity in the film, her team could have shown some conflict about having to fight her (one does in one scene), but this should have been much more developed and explored.

Meh. Pretty warmed over stuff for a Phase 3 movie. Not terrible, but not the most scintillating use of 2 hours either.

Carol is mean, not very interesting herself and seems to sport the same face thought out the whole movie with a few bright moments when she is talking with nick fury. most of the humor of the movie comes from fury and he aliens involved, but carol danvers just doesn't seem to fit in with the rest of them. she doesn't particularly human at any one point in the movie and never seems to have any issues with anything. as a whole i would say wait till disney plus to see this movie if you want to see it at all. It's a generic Marvel superhero film from there, with a few brief flashes of chemistry sprinkled unevenly. Again, I wouldn't have chosen Brie Larson for the role, but I'm not throwing out the idea that 'Captain Marvel' could have better sequels, like 'Thor'. But I'm not really optimistic, either. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Ok so first off the Stan Lee tribute was very heartwarming and probably the only emotion I felt in the entire movie. Had it not been for the tribute, this movie would probably be ranked lower that the 5 I gave it. The quality of this movie feels to be somewhere between a Disney Channel special and a Syfy Channel movie. The story was very slow and by the time the pace started picking up I had already checked out and was not interested. The humor was weak in my opinion and I think only one joke made me laugh. Most Marvel movies I can leave the theater and recall my favorite parts. I left this movie feeling empty and relieved it was over. Samuel L. Jackson's role as Fury felt out of character to me. Weve been used to a serious, but sometimes cuts a joke here and there, Nick Fury. This version of a younger Fury did not feel like the same person. Fury was more laid back and made jokes as much as he could. Fury was pretty much the comedic relief of the movie and not the strong, get things done, Fury weve had since Iron Man. Yeah change is good, but this was not a good change in my opinion. Next the cat...I did not like the cat. The reveal was nice to see but then it was overused and lost its hype, quickly. Also it was pretty predictable that the cat would be the reason Fury lost his eye, which was also overused and lost its appeal. The way the movie kept joking and teasing the audience about how Fury may lose his eye was a gag that fell flat. Every time something happened to Fury they movie would draw attention to his eye for a huge build up and DUD, he'd be fine. Then finally at the end of the movie the cat claws his eye in the most anti climatic fashion. Maybe the whole joke was to make people feel like Fury was an awesome soldier who lost his eye from something spectacular, only to make it this made up story of grandeur. It felt very Snoke-ish to me as a fan. Now onto Brie Larson or Carol Danvers. Brie's performance was very bland in this movie. I didnt feel any authentic connection she was having with any of her other co-stars. The movie tried to get the audience to feel a connection with her long lost friend towards the end, but it also fell flat due to it being mixed with a plot twist. Onto the character of Captain Marvel itself. Captain Marvel, CM, felt very much like a Mary Sue. CMs power level through the movie went from being a super hero to god by the end of the movie. To quote the late great Ron Burgundy "Well that escalated quickly." CM went from single handily beating waves of bad guys and upgrading to beating waves of massive space ships and causing a fleet of Ronan the Accuser's ships to retreat. Then after seeing her demolish gigantic space ships she faces her true enemy in the movie, Jude Law's character, who doesn't have godlike powers. It was like watching someone beat Floyd Mayweather and then having a 4 year old as the next match. Im assuming that was also another joke that fell flat due to its delivery. My biggest complaint was the heavy feminist points. Im ok with the movie being having a strong female character, but when the movie constantly throws it in your face "hey! men are douches" or "did you see how rude that MAN was??" It was a bit annoying and took me out of the movie and felt as if I was watching CNN. I was waiting for a gender pay gap reference by the end of the movie. This movie had potential to be a good movie, but it feels like a lot of it's problem was the execution or delivery. The end credit scenes were just bland, important, but bland. How CM just pops up behind Black Widow and in this Ben Stein voice asks "Where's Fury?" was comical, to me. The second end credit scene was drawn out and predictable. When the movie ended I already figured out the end credit scene would be the cat coughing it up and that's exactly what happened. The movie definitely feels like a somewhere in the middle kind of movie. It did not live up to expectation or to the Marvel name. Expand

Well, I just plain don't like Brie Larson as Captain Marvel.

I was looking forwards to seeing Captain Marvel join the MCU. But Larson just does not pull it off, she has the same presence, energy and charisma as you might find in a pile of soggy carboard.

There are definitely some great moments with Nick Fury (I am not saying I want a Nick Fury solo movie, please, don't make that a thing) and I really enjoyed some of the moments with the Skrull played by Ben Mendelsohn, but on the whole I found the movie to be a bit lackluster. Certainly not the weakest movie in Marvels line-ups (Thor 2 and Captain America 1 have that privilege) but it just generally wasn't on par with what you expect from Marvel after they have had over a decade to perfect the formula.

The tone was inconsistent, too casual to be serious in many scenes which make it difficult for me. and cpt marvel isnt a very inspiring person. she got her power by chance and seemed to just use her powers irresponsibly and impulsively, which makes her a poor leader or even a soldier, when shes supposed to be from a military background. the de-aging CG was great on jacksons face but else where pretty sub par. Due to other Marvel movies coming out before Captain Marvel nothing really seems fun or original, like Guardians of the Galaxy made space battles and humor good, and Thor showed the potential power of an ultimate being, while Captain Marvel kinda seemed a bit dulled down compared to them. Also the movie was kinda riddled with plot holes and unsatisfying answers, and if you know how the MCU works, you already can piece together how the movie is gonna end. Captain Marvel isn't a terrible movie, but it just doesn't quite do a good job at portraying the true potential power of Captain Marvel, but instead is kinda pretty cheesy and dumb at times. But I guess the cat was a somewhat fun surprise! Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This movie was painfully average. Average is not necessarily a bad thing, but with Marvel you expect nothing short of the best. There was 2 gaping plot holes that I just didn't like, and I didn't like that Captain Marvel more or less became invincible at the end. Otherwise the CGI was amazing and there was a few funny moments in the movie that I enjoyed + the acting from Samuel L Jackson and Jude Law kept the movie up.

The shenanigans and politics from Brie Larson outside the movie will otherwise not do this movie and it's boxoffice run, any favors. She talked about inclusion and more seats at the table, but in the process she basically shat on almost 50% of Marvels fans (white males).

A puzzle piece made specifically for 'Avengers: Infinity War' (2018) and the upcoming 'Avengers: Endgame' (2019). The film struggles to stand on its own, often reminding us as to why it's made, but forgetting about the title character herself. The film focuses on our title character, played by Oscar winner Brie Larson, and her being among the Kree forces. They are noble warriors, and she receives some extensive training with Yon-Rogg (Jude Law), as well as their main mission, which is to hunt down Skrulls, an evil alien-like race who can shape-shift into anyone, so you don't know who to trust. Carol (Larson) seems to be struggling to remember her past, we see her origins fragmented and get glimpses of who she was. There seems to be a trend of a strong and powerful, young female character who doesn't know where she came from, and gets glimpses of her past from time to time. If you remember Rey from 'Star Wars: The Force Awakens' (2015), or Alita from the recent 'Alita: Battle Angel' (2019), then you've seen this kind of origin story before. An incident occurs which leaves her stranded on Earth, she tries to find out what happened with the Skrulls, and runs into Nick Fury (a de-aged Samuel L. Jackson), and he thinks the idea of shape-shifting aliens walking among the Earth as well as a group of noble warriors from other planets is insane, but he slowly warms up to the idea after having seen most of it for himself. The main villain here is Talos (Ben Mendelsohn), the leader of the Skrulls, and his journey to find Danvers and take her down. The film, directed by Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck (who also directed 'Mississippi Grind' also starring Mendelsohn), tries to be a mix of an intergalactic space adventure like 'Guardians of the Galaxy' (2014), while trying to be as grounded as 'Captain America: The Winter Soldier' (2014), but for some reason, neither of these aspects feel as if they contain any emotional weight to it. It feels very paint-by-numbers as if characters need to get to certain places so the movie can try to elevate. Larson, who is a talented actress, tries to show some quirks at times, but doesn't carry the same amount of charm or playful charisma. She does share some terrific chemistry with Jackson, and their playful banter helps lift the spirits of the film's tone. Not to mention that the pace falls apart once we get to the second act, and Danvers is reunited with a friend. The scene would have more impact if we saw her actually do these things as opposed to just flashing those little memories earlier on. It's a similar problem I had with 'Guardians of the Galaxy' (2014) where, one minute, Peter Quill is a young boy, then the next minute, he's a fully grown man... there was no development to him growing up, it's just here's your character then, here they are now. Except we don't see Danvers mostly in her early life, just told through very quick flashbacks. I applaud Marvel for trying to take a different spin on origin stories, but maybe this is something to require some improvement. Also, as I said above, this film's sole purpose is to be the filler in the "Avengers" sandwich, with "Infinity War" and "Endgame" (which will be released on April 26th) being the two buns on either side. The film lacks a sense of excitement, and Larson never gets a chance to shine as her character, it all just feels lifeless with a sense of thrills here and there. Expand

If Marvel can explain the Infinity Stones in less than 15 minutes of total running time between many movies; this movie just wants to waste your 2 hours with lifeless story. I feel like the story has a lot of unrealized potential. This is a little disappointing, since Marvel has been working on this story for YEARS!

I feel like I should write a little more.

The end credit scenes are worthless. Who would ever see that coming. Thanks for keeping us in the dark on why we should care about the MCU after Avengers Endgame.

Hmmmm... a little more.

See it if you must. Keep your expectations in check. Don't feel like you are missing out if you don't see it before the next Avenger's movie.

The ranting begins here. Pay no attention. You've been warned. Still no giant spoiler type stuff.

There's no hook, no lure, no "did you catch that?" hint of what's to come. If there was, I completely missed it. Don't worry Captain Marvel is on it! Wait, no she isn't... If she wasn't sleep walking for decades, she would have noticed some giant, long lived purple dude wants to gather mighty stones, and eliminate half of the lives in the universe. How come everyone knows about Thanos except Captain Marvel? She even stared down Ronan "the Accuser" who happens to also be chasing down stones. Explain that one Kevin.

Wow, 5000 characters allows me to go on, and on, and on some more.

I want more Goose. Let's start a petition. Let's digitally add Goose to more movies. More Goose! More Goose! More Goose! More Goose! More Goose! More Goose! More Goose!

Seriously, right down the middle on this one. Watchable? Yes! Can you skip it? Yes.

Captain Marvel isn't that good in this movie because it was a RUSHED character in order to have a way to beat Thanos down with the six jewels. Also her powers is completely asspulled. Legit that one gem will give her more power than Thanos that wields all 6 gems? **** that. Absurd and dishonest. The plot in the start wasn't that great either. They tried to compress a gigantic universe of two other races into a 2-hour long movie while also developing Captain Marvel as a character and Nick Fury's eye loss, not to forget that we also have random flashbacks in order to explain Carol Danvers' past.

In the middle of the movie the plot gets absurdly shifted with the sudden appearance of Ronan in the movie that reminds us that the Kree is the evil race from Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 1 (Who the **** didn't remember that? I did. I thought Captain Marvel would be an Anti-Hero type of character. Guess I was wrong.).

It had a lot to offer, but was poorly offered. This was a script long enough for two or three movies but they insisted in making it into only one.

TL;DR: Captain Marvel sucked because it was a rushed movie.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. If we compare ''Captain Marvel'' with others superheroes movies, we can conclude that ''Captain Marvel'' is the worst character story, all Marvel superheroes movies show the early life of superhero at the beginning, and then how he/she obtains the superpower as a forward story, but ''Captain Marvel'' started backwardly, at the beginning she already has a superpower, but she doesn't remember anything about how she got it, until the end when she finds out how she obtained it. I think the writers made a different a style of superhero movie to surprise the audience with some twist in the story, but they failed because it was a bad twist and no one surprised or impressed, they could make a wonderful, emotional and enjoyable movie if they just make it forward and clear (showing her early life, not as a flashback, until she becomes a "Captain Marvel'').

I read a lot of negative reviews, and I think most audiences hated ''Captain Marvel'' due to many factors:
1- Less action than other Marvel movies.
2- Released after the masterpiece ''Avengers: infinite war'', so all marvel audience were expecting same or more from ''Captain Marvel.''
3- Her power wasn't special, it's almost like '''Superman.''
4- Lack of humor.
5- Not following straight forward story as same as other superhero movies.

Finally, ''Captain Marvel' is just a TV movie, not good and not bad, if you are one of marvel audience you will not like it, but if you just want to watch a superhero movie maybe you will enjoy a little.

But marvel films are excellent so this is a real disappointment and a shock. It's technically well made with good acting (mostly), excellent cgi (except the cat) , fun music and decent direction and the de-aging process is incredible....but the writing ...well it's trash. The script is ok for a popcorn summer film but the story is just garbage. Really poor...stupid and offensive to all that came before. I'd say it wasn't a marvel film at all...more a mar vel movie (in joke ...one of the few). I don't know what happened if I guessed I'd say it was rushed. It feels and looks rushed. If I'm being honest as a huge fan of shield it's like the best shield episode ever. It looks and feels like an extended shield episode. Not a bad thing but why bother being a film. Also there is some pc nonsense going on but nothing too offensive. I don't know the comics or care and I don't care about having to see or read additional info to understand the film ...that's just lazy film making. There isn't too much of that but enough to add to the overall poor quality of the movie. The post credits junk is also...well just nothing special. All of it serves better films.

Brie Larson. Yes she is named after a cheese but she is competent as Cpt Marvel. I like her but I felt she was out of place here. She never felt truly anything beyond lost and confused. Wonder Woman and cat Woman have been way more bad ass. So is it worth your time? No its not but that's the problem ....You have to watch this dumb lazy unoriginal creatively dearth film to move on to the next and final one. That wasn't a problem when they were all awesome and even thor managed to improve. But it is a problem when the film is so average and boring and just meh. Watch it once and forget about it. This is no Avengers or Antman or Planet hulk or Cpt America or Ironman...just not in the same league though it is the same universe.

I didn't hate the film but it's the worst type of film....a film which does nothing new and adds nothing to your life. A waste of potential, talent, time and money. Overall A for Average 5/10.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. robert downey jr has so much charisma that can talk to a wall and make you cry/laugh/write an your university thesis etc. Brie Larson is the wall. Really the miscast for the role was huge. I do not think that it was Brie Larson fault, actually i believe she was a victim. They really did not protect her by rewriting her scenes/lines so they will fit to her. Music was decent could been better. The way how Nick Fury lost his eye is disrespectful to the character and the story of the character. CGI's are fair but they could be better. First part was ok but then is just going down. The movie had a lot of feminist scenes but i was expecting worst. Marvel show us that they can do better. Monica Rambeau. For a comic enthusiast like me that was like a spit in the face from Marvel. Monica Rambeau a afroamerican mother/ saves the word as leader of Avengers and they make her few bad lines. There goes the "diversity" out of the window. Tesaract is not where it suppose to be according to previews movies.
The KREE-SKRULL war is just misunderstanding when it should be for years.
Ronan the Accuser goes down like a a turd.
Jude Law’s character, devoted himself to Ronan, so why wasn’t in Guardians of the Galaxy?
The origin movie doesnot tell us how she got her powers.
In general the movie does not meet the standards of the other Marvel movies. My opinion s that it makes it one 3 worst movies.
Russos brothers already missed.

I really came in wanting to love this movie. I've seen every marvel film (some of them two or three times) and typically the origin story for a hero is my favorite part.
Surprisingly I was just bored throughout the film. The story is quite predictable and the stakes feel incredibly low. Once Captain Marvel gets a grasp on her powers she's completely unstoppable and it's kind of boring to see. There were a few interesting characters - nick fury, agent colson, a skrull and the cat of course.
I kind of just wanted to leave halfway through though which is something I never thought i'd say about a marvel film.
Oh a good tip - the mid credits scene is really great but the post credits scene is completely pointless and everyone in the theater who waited for it seemed disappointed. I won't spoil it, i'll just say there are no important characters in it at all.

The movie was a failed attempt to involve Captain Marvel into the MCU. Without Captain Marvel (Brie Larson) the film would have been more interesting and the sc-fi worlds they were building was never done before in the MCU, yet Captain Marvel is not an interesting character, she is too powerful, too dull and too underdeveloped. Samuel Jackson (Nick Fury) adds a great aspect to the film being very funny and cool. The film is also trying to be every marvel film anyone has ever seen, one minute its Guardians of the Galaxy, Iron Man, Avengers, Captain America and (DC) Wonder Woman/ Superman. It deserves something straight in the middle, a confused film. Expand

Besides the super powers, all the best goalies in the galaxy and Iron Man are there. I must say that I do not really know what to tell so much movies are alike. I am sad to see that the risk taking is limited, but that the evolution of visual quality is very present. Holograms are a bit like black panther without the metallic and gray aspect. Beside the main character is not so captain but Fury and I must say that this actor plays the game to the end. This film can be positioned second in the Marvel environment. And in the last Thanos will take a power that will make him dance.

Not Marvels best work just like Black Panther, it was watchable but only once. I didn't much care for some of the red conning basically all things that had to do with Fury.
While the movie was not god awful it felt Meh, the CGI was vomit inducing at few points feels like they gave that job to the e-team, the acting was so stiff at points that I thought the actors were planks of wood. Especially Brie after she unleashed her powers she just felt like a tabula rasa, and not to mention she was both powerful but also weak pretty much the same as in Avengers Endgame. I think the writers have no idea how to write her character and her powers.
The feminists points were annoying but luckily there weren't too many but every time there was it wasn't well executed like in Wonder Woman, it was forced and I doubt anyone truly related to her because of that. Reason mostly being that the arrogance of Capt Marvel was off the charts similar to Tony Stark, but unlike Tony she never had as powerful of a scene of the "Oh my God, what have I done" she didn't feel really regretful of killing the Skrulls. She had about 10 second scene where she had the Hollywood "sexy cry" moment but then she just thought okay, time to kill some Kree next without any mercy or remorse. Could have this ever been done as a good movie? Probably not, because even in the comic world Capt Marvel isn't a much liked character due to her tendency to jump into conclusions and getting characters killed and acting like she is the boss so to say.
In the end, Meh movie wouldn't watch it again and honestly there is no reason for anyone to watch this since it doesn't add anything to Endgame.

I'm highly disappointed they didn't create a struggle for the character to overpower. She pretty much gets handed her power without having to earn it. In Thor his arrogance causes him to lose everything. When all is lost and his about to lose he finds the power to protect the ones he loves. This movie doesn't have that. That's really the main reason I can't give this movie a good score. You can't just make the character powerful for the sake of being powerful. It doesn't work out. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. It isn't "Thor 2 BAD" and Brie Larson acting isn't emotionless as lot of people think but there is some bad takes and a lot of times the emotion delivered is the opposite of what is expected. - For an origin story the evolution of the main character between the start and the end of the movie is too weak. - The direction isn't really mind blowing and while you understand that the movie wants Captain Marvel overpowered the final action scene is somewhat flat and uninspired. - The OST is forgettable.

fortunately Samuel L Jackson and Ben Mendelsohn steal the show. The Plot twist is good for a standalone movie but ruins a lot of potential stories for the next phase.

Captain Marvel was not the worst Marvel film to date, but it is bottom 10. For me it is #5 for the bottom 5, however I can see a few movies that it could be tied with, so safe to say it is bottom 10. For me it is #5 for the bottom 5, however I can see a few movies that it could be tied with, so safe to say it is bottom 10. Brie Larson may very well be an Oscar award winning actress, but she did not get it in comedy or action, and it shows. Her presentation of the character seems uncomfortable, like she isn't sure how to act the part. She presents Captain Marvel as very one dimensional, and this is in part due to the writing as well, so it is not all on her. However, her delivery of lines is bland, her jokes are dry and seem forced for her. Some were funny, but most didn't feel right. There were some cringe worthy moments in the film, even with the interactions between her and Samuel L. Jackson. Like they are almost forcing the concept that they get along. It took you out of the movie a few times. Because Brie Larson highly politicized this movie, the political moments stand out more to me because I was aware of it. I think if she hadn't been so political with it, these political moments wouldn't have stood out as more, but there were definitely at least a half a dozen hard eye-roll moments that felt completely unnecessary. The action itself was good, but anti-climactic. The big breakout moments for Captain Marvel were underwhelming and didn't quite get you in the feels. There was one moment near the end that could have been a large character development for her, and they may the decision to not act upon it so they can deliver another politically charged concept. However, I understand if they went the different route, that it may not make sense in as far as the character development didn't allow for it. You decide, but you'll know when you see it. She had two choices, and I think the other would have been better and made me cheer for her. The music is good, but sometimes out of place, and the 90s nostalgia isn't over the top. The writing really changes the source material and is disrespectful to the original characters with their changes. The first end credits scene is also a letdown when you see it. It is almost disrespectful to Marvel comics and the Avengers as well. You can guarantee that we will see it mentioned in Endgame as well.

The created some continuity issues as well with Captain America being the first Avenger, as he is called, set in the 40s and this film, as you will see in the end credits scene. As well as minor ones with Agent Coulson and SHIELD in this movie versus him and SHIELD in the first Iron man film which is set after this film. Again, I put it on the lazy writing but also Marvel studios for not catching these things which they have done so well on continuity with their other 20 films.

You won't be wasting your m
oney seeing it in the theatres, but you also wouldn't be missing out if you waited to watch it another way.

Finally, there is a twist in the film that when it happens, (and if you know marvel comics and their next big cross-over event), it will confuse you on how they will justify the next big "Avengers 4".

Unfortunately Brie Larson did not embody the hero in this film. Robert Downey Jr. IS Tony Stark, Chris Evans IS Captain America, Chris Hemsworth IS Thor, Benedict Cumberbatch IS Dr. Strange...Brie Larson does not necessarily have to be Captain Marvel and would probably serve the character better if she was recast.
