This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. There were a lot of moments where I face palmed. I hated when Zola explained the whole evil plan to Captain America and Black Widow in the secret underground lab. I know he was stalling but he would've said something else that's **** I also hated how Black Widow kept trying to hook Captain America with a date. This movie lacked humor. But the action sequences between Captain America and Hydra/Winter Soldier was amazing. Expand

I think Captain America rose up to his stage and became who the comics intended him to be for the most part in this one. It was a well structured plot that kept you awake and guessing. If not the plot, there were a few females with decent screen time to drool over so that works too. It delivered simply a solid movie about a super hero that isn't all flash (no pun intended) and gloss. Hard to do these days. A usable plot coupled with moral dilemma was a good angle. I'm not majorly impressed with the acting or the scale of the movie though. Wouldn't a problem this big like probably get some of the other Avengers involved? The more important ones? Just sayin. Marvel's taking over and there's not much we can do except hope they can stay consistent. Not all of them are great but this one is worth a watch. Expand

He enlists Black Widow (Scarlett Johansson) and newbie The Falcon (Anthony Mackie) to help. This may be the most unoriginal screenplay yet for Marvel heroes: no surprises, no peril and no humor. It moves forward with momentum and some of the visuals are cool. Most of the fights are fast cut, hand held and hard to follow. While it's never dull, the predictability and unimaginative action don't render it special. NOTE: There's one additional clip after the closing titles and another after the final credits. Expand

Would have been great to make a Captain America movie about Captain America. They should have just called this Shield: The Movie. Boring, long, and I'm really surprised about how many people liked it.

WW2 always works. but this movie was flat. i can't tell the difference between this and gi joe or transformers. they all play the same. it needs more dialogue and foundation. When the action starts I don't care about the characters and when it finishes I still don"t care. sure you root for the good guys but there is no mythos. nazis have a similar mythos to the evil empire in star wars. a polarizing force which separates good and bad. this movie falls short. i'll keep watching but just not as enjoyable as ironman. capt is played so one dimensional. ButBrilliant fighting scenes (not 2014s best though, check The Raid 2 for that), very well choreographed. Actors do a decent job (it´s not a movie to shine as an actor anyway) and the story is slightly superior to the average Marvel film. But the hype around it is too much. Robert Reford is totally wasted. The brief scenes with real dialogue are as corny and childish as in any other Marvel film, jokes are weak, which makes for a weird mix of serious tone and action and these cheap jokes that does not work that well. Particularly annoying is the score during the first past of the film, very American-ish in a bad and patriotic way. The villain was a little bit better than usual too, but still weak and all their scenes remind the audience of The Dark knight Batman and Joker scenes, only that failing to come close. Overall, entertaining but only a little bit better than the typical mediocre comic book film from Marvel. Expand

It starts off really strong with a very cool action sequence aboard a ship at sea, but just when I think it's going to be one of the better Marvel films, it becomes almost a version some updated political spy thriller from the 1970s. Like the Osterman Weekend, if you will, with superheroes. Not that I am against a film having a story. But the story in this film kind of defies logic. I have read reviews about how great the character of the Winter Solider is, and how he is the best Marvel villain since Loki. I call bullsh#t on that, as the best Marvel villains, imho, are Loki at the top, followed by Doc Ock from Spider-Man 2 and Magneto from X-Men: First Class. Hell, I would go as far as saying even Sebastian Shaw from First Class was a better villain than Winter Soldier. Here is simply akin to the Terminator, showing up when he is called for and then laying waste to all around him. It doesn't require much acting for that, just a strong physical presence, which he does deliver. But no more than Kurst The Undying in Thor: Dark World, a much superior film to this. It had enough going for it that I didn't totally hate it, but at the same time, I expected a lot more from it. I don't blame the actors, as they are all good with the roles they play. I blame a mediocre script with some plot holes I just found difficult to believe. And I am usually way more forgiving than this.

But, hey, that's just my opinion. And clearly I am in the minority here ^^!

It seems more and more like Chris Evans was only casted for his looks. The character Steve Rogers is boring and one-dimensional - the few "emotional" moments present aren't written in a believable manner.
I personally enjoyed 'The Avengers' quite a lot and 'Captain America: The Winter Soldier' doesn't live up to that standard. The dynamics between the actors/characters are superficial. Also I hate the fact that they've casted Cobie Smulders as Maria Hill - for me she's forever stuck as Robin Scherbatsky (How I Met Your Mother) and is in no way as badass as she should be.

Still, I can't deny that the movie was entertaining. It was slow at times but acceptable. I really liked the supporting character 'Sam Wilson/Falcon'. He was witty and human as badass. I probably won't watch it again, but didn't feel like I completely wasted two hours of my life.

It follows the good Captain’s (always reliably played by Chris Evans) struggle to come to terms with his new contemporary life after decade of suspended animation, and of course, his crime fighting responsibilities at the behest of S.H.I.E.L.D., an organization shrouded by so much secrecy, it’s very intentions are put under much scrutiny. While all this is happening a remnant of Captain America’s past has unearthed, in the form of the Winter Soldier, and the fight becomes far more personal. While the premise looks formidable on paper; the final product is as bland as they come - packaged and sealed for mass production by the Marvel Factory. Director’s Anthony and Joe Russo, took very little artistic risks when making this film: channeling extensive, inelegant action scenes, and action movie clichés that make this film predictable and anti-climatic. From the fake deaths to the real villain masquerading as a good guy for the first half of the movie, this film’s got it all! Like most of the other films made by Marvel, this one simply feels like a stepping stone for the next big movie; possessing very little impact as a standalone feature. As such, it feels like another irrelevant entry in the franchise, that’s bound to cash in at the box office. But I can’t begrudge it for making the big bucks, it does offer some mild entertainment; and it feels fair to commend the studio for their win streak, in that regard. However, I remain largely unimpressed by this movie; and yearn for something boldly creative from the studio… not since ‘Iron Man’ (2008), have I truly been smitten. Expand

May Stan Lee rest in peace and may this copy paste film be assaulted with a glue gun.

The first Captain America was a commercial for The Avengers. This film at least progresses the plot in some ways through some exposition and adding a new character to the universe, but it's mostly just the same drivel once again. The film starts by just feeling like cut material from a previous Marvel film. It feels like these people have no idea how to start a movie well. They just get straight to the talking and boredom. They do go on a ship to fight but for some reason Captain America can't take out this one guy even though he can hold a helicopter still in the third Captain America movie. I think it took the film like 40 minutes for me to start getting invested in it. We get these couple scenes of Chris Evans and Scarlett Johansson going in public while cleverly "hiding" from people looking for them. It was pretty fun.

Unfortunately that's where it all comes down to. This movie is just "pretty fun". You watch them fight and talk the exact same way they did in the last film(s). You get a couple set pieces here and there and they're cool but also very samey to the last ones. It's fine for what it is but I'm getting so bored of it. Marvel also expects you to have watched like half a season of the show "Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D." for you to be up to date with the plot, and I'm not gonna f*cking watch that show. Seriously. There is a scene early in the film that gives you information on Captain America's character and Peggy Carter, Cap's loved one from the first film. So if you haven't seen the first film, that scene is a nice way to give you a small dose of backstory, but after that it's just straight into the complicated plot of S.H.I.E.L.D. and HYDRA. And to be honest it's just kind of ehhh. I'm really not invested in it at all. And what makes it even worse is the fact that Captain America is still a boring character. Chris Evans does what he can but there's not a lot to do with a character this lame.

At the same time it's easy to rant a little bit about these films but also I feel like I've nothing to say really. Especially with these Captain America films. They're just BORING. It just feels like the whole point is to introduce a new character for the next Avengers film and save the most interesting story bits and consequences for that too. Just same s*it, different day.

Shaky Cam and Rehashed Action Ruins It

Moviegoers above the age of 13 will recognize most of the action set pieces and plot elements from other films. There's an elevator fight, which we've seen before. Evil cops, evil suits, "big brother" danger, some running from fire and more explosions.

The fundamental problem with these movies is that you never feel like the main characters are in any danger. No matter how much of a beating Captain America takes, he's going to live to make sequels. The same goes for all of the popular cast members. Given the immortality of the good guys, the only question is How they're going to get out of peril. Don't expect anything new here.

The best writing is happening on television, sadly. Film-quality writing is going to HBO and independent networks, and television directors are moving to the big screen.

This one is all washed up. Hail hydra.

I still don't think it's good though. There are two big problems with this film for me. First, the premise is just not believable (yes, I know this is a comic book film). Second, the plot is very poorly written, and the dialogue is so cringe-worthy that I was laughing half the time, especially during the "emotional scenes" that are supposed to build character. I see what they were trying to do with Captain struggling in the modern world, but it was executed very poorly. Even if you accept the premise, the film is so horribly predictable and bland, you know the villains and the outcome from the beginning. And don't even get me started on how useless the Winter Soldier is.

Here is a simple example of the poor writing in this film: at the beginning of the film, the bad guys try to kill Fury...by shooting his car with hundreds of bullets. Why not just assassinate him quietly, or at least blow up his car with a bomb or something?

The only redeeming factor is the action. I actually feel it was a lot better than the first film in that regard. The fighting style and the shield use were awesome, especially in the earlier scenes. I also loved the fight against GSP, to show that although Cap. is superhuman, a top-conditioned normal person can still make him sweat.

Like some of the films of the 1940s that let themselves get bogged down in shoe-horned love stories, “Captain America: The Winter Soldier” stumbled hard in the middle of the narrative.

Much of the problems in this film stem from Scarlett Johansson’s character. She’s really unnecessary to the overall nature of the film, except to impart some level of humanity to Captain Rogers. But the character of Emily VanCamp has no logical function at all. Ultimately, if the story had stuck to its guns as a political thriller throughout, it could have been fantastic. However, the film felt too bloated with all of its characters and it brought the film to a screeching halt.

Movies like “The French Connection” and “Serpico” live up to the political thriller genre. Unfortunately, “Captain America: The Winter Soldier” may be entertaining in a fun way but it is more a movie for kids and not the thinking man's political thriller we were promised by Disney/Marvel.

Once they made the Avengers that was it. How could any of the hero's go on to have solo missions where the world is at stake...It doesnt make sense. Small scale missions sure, but with scenarios in these movies getting more and more elaborate it just defies reason.

For every huge moment within Captain Amurica 2 I found myself saying 'Iron Man should pop in here', or 'Hulk would sort this out'. These guys are the worlds best defense...where do they all go when one of them is in trouble? Somewhere else I guess. Its like the producers say to themselves, which is the least cgi heavy character that we can shoe horn in here....ummm Black Widow...hell ya she doesnt change into anything, her costume isnt made of metal plates and she doesnt have a whirling hammer to make her fly.

A world with so many heros...one fighting the forces of evil with the help of loads of non super hero characters and birdman well it just doesnt wash. For that reason I found it hard to get into Cat-pain America 2, the dynamic of the world just didnt sit right, the main characters kept name dropping the other heros...instead of the other heros just dropping in.

As movies go it was passable, not as poor as Cup-tain Amerreeka but still only passable.

It is yet another mediocre superhero movie from Marvel. It teased at interesting questions, like, "Is it okay to kill people to prevent them from killing people?" but all it did was tease. The movie changes up Marvel's movie universe a little bit, but for what purpose? So another superhero can save the day next year in a slightly different way while uttering slightly different one-liners? In the end, the movie is about an uncompromising good guy who saves people from dying. That's not interesting in the world of fiction; it's overused. Expand

It was really annoying how i could predict everything that was happening through the movie, it was painful to see a lot of incoherence in the events, and it was also annoying that lazy writers were just giving to the plot structure conveniences to the events. I really dislike when the laws of physics don't apply to Marvel productions and even worse when they are in favor with the protagonist, just for the plot device to work. This is the question that I would like to have had answered a lot earlier than is actually the case here. By the time some sort of resolution is offered one really couldn't care less. In fact this Marvel-less movie is a thorough going bore. Aside from a few sequences (involving a lift, and a climatic fight aboard an artillery carrier) most of the action is un excitingly derivative. In between these set pieces we have a lot of waffle spoken in an attempt to build character, but this only extends the agony of an already over long film. Visual effects are impressive, generally, although one static shot of the three artillery stations does look very fake.
It is good to see Robert Redford playing a villain for a change although he must obviously be doing it for the money. After all, didn't he set up Sundance as an alternative to this kind of movie regularly churned out by the Hollywood machine.
Fans of the first film, I'm sure, will love it and will stay (if in the know) for the two sequences that arrive during, and at the end of the final credits. Others, like myself, may wish they had left after the first 20 minutes.

I return seven years later to find yet another Metacritic reivew removed because it was not flattering enough...

Plot holes, character assassination (Cap and Bucky), laughable script elements (Fury's downtown attempted assassination), a metric tonne of convienence, culminating in the mass murder of people because the 'heroes' want to remove weapon platforms from anyone's control. So this is the laziest MCU script where it is all style over substance. Watch it again, and when the action is going a little too fast use pause and skip back and re-watch some of the uninetentional cringe within many scenes. The only good point is Black Widow's character is well developed in this movie. Even Fury is depicted as an incompetent spy for most of the movie. Massive plot hole: The AI. Just think about how many Hydra would have made if it had not been invented, like the lightsaber, for this movie only. So much for the MC "Universe".

Well that was dull. Barby and Ken fight it out against equally two dimensional evil Ken dolls. Barby and Ken fight it out against equally two dimensional evil Ken dolls. This has been done a thousand times at this point only a lot better, I should have watched raiders of the lost ark. Do yourself a favor and learn from my error and why does everyone have so much makeup on, how white does the captain have to be. There is also a not so subtle militaristic theme running though out. Get all the kids brain washed early that killing really isn't all that bad. Hollywood is really left wing. I did not enjoy this film. Expand
